...Where The Company of Heroes Gather and Bond

Moving his arcane eye into position above the tower as Ælfric secured his grappling hook, Julian prepared himself to follow after Korgazhar, Ælfric, and Fernal. There was no sense in waiting for the others to open the front gate, after all.
OOC:
I suppose at this point I'm forced to leave my mount behind until we can open the gate? Fairly certain a Pegasus can't climb a rope, and I'm presuming there's not a way for it to reasonably fly into the tower stealthily.
Mentally communicating with his conjured companion Ligeia, Julian commands the pegasus to wait beneath the tower for further instruction, but to fly away should it be discovered, remaining within one mile so that they may still communicate via their telepathic bond.

Rolls

Str(Athletics) - (1d20-1)

When her turn comes to climb. She will grab the rope and quickly and easily climbs quietly. As always gracefully.

Once over the wall, Korgazhar closed in on the giant, moving to place himself between the gong and the giant. He knew his armour would be noisy, so he left the job of stealing away the gong's hammer to the more stealthy among them - the more precautions they could take to prevent the giant raising an alarm, the better. He hefted his massive glaive, ready to strike a blow the moment the giant showed signs of waking.
OOC:
Declaring that Korgazhar intends to take advantage of the giant's sleeping condition at the first sign of his rousing, in order to benefit from whatever attacks he can potentially make.

Rolls

Stealth, Stealth (disadv) - (1d20+12, 1d20+12)

1d20+12 : (18) + 12 = 30

1d20+12 : (19) + 12 = 31

Korgazhar climbs into the tower and nearly stumbles on the large, padded club being used to sound the gong. Fortunately, the nimble Fernal arrives just in time to brace the warrior and you both hold your breath as the sleeping giant snorts, turns over, smacks his lips and returns to a heavy snore. Even from a few few away, you can smell the fetid breath, a mixture of bile, ale and whatever food he has recently eaten.

A moment later, a nimble Aelfric joins you, followed then by Julian. Alain, however, struggles to get more than halfway up, his strength unable to keep up with the physical exertion necessary to make it all of the way.
OOC:
I went ahead and rolled the checks for those who had not yet done so.

Rolls

Aelfric Athletics Check - (1d20-1)

(16) - 1 = 15

Aelfric Athletics Check (adv) - (1d20-1)

(11) - 1 = 10

Aelfric Stealth - (1d20+13)

(14) + 13 = 27

Alain Athletics Check - (1d20-1)

(8) - 1 = 7

Alain Athletics Check (adv) - (1d20-1)

(10) - 1 = 9

Mar 17, 2019 9:18 pm
Alain whispers up to the group, "A hand please!"
OOC:
Can I do another check if the other pcs Help me, or should I try to think of another way in?
Mar 17, 2019 9:24 pm
Fernal joins Korgazhar and is ready to take out this sleeping giant as she has her longsword ready to strike. Love advantage on prone targets.

Ælfric, having barely made it up the rope himself, focused on finding and stowing whatever the giant might use to hit the alarm gong. He also looked for the way down from the tower into the main structure.
OOC:
Apologies. Busy then sleepy weekend.
Would Mage Hand assist help the bard any? Ælfric's horrid Athletics won't let him climb down again to help the Loreweaver.

OOC:
A strength check DC 15 and someone could pull up Alain. The Mage Hand has a maximum lift of 10 lbs, so that would not help. As it stands, Alain would either need to get in another way or wait for someone to pull him up.

And no apologies are needed... I won't post for your PC unless you ask me to, but dice rolls can be made in your stead... unless it is something that you should really do yourself (death saves, etc.)

Satisfied that the others had made their way up, and then hearing Alain's whisper from over the wall, Korgazhar signaled to Julian to tell Alain to wait. Satisfied that Aelfric had moved the gong club out of the way, he then made the universal sign for throat slitting, drawing his thumb across his neck, before hefting his weapon, poised to strike.
OOC:
Readying to kill the giant! DM, you need initiative?
Mar 18, 2019 1:30 am
Ælfric unsheathed his rapier for the execution.

"Let's be quick about it, then you muscled ones can pull Alain up."
Mar 18, 2019 3:01 am
OOC:
No need for initiative. Anyone attacking the giant roll an attack with advantage, and a hit is automatically a critical hit.
Mar 18, 2019 3:37 am
Ælfric expertly plunged his rapier into the giant's neck!
OOC:
That's 44 damage.
I'd use Booming Blade for an extra 1d8 but that's thunder damage and I'm not sure if the cloaking field will adequately lessen any noise from that.

Fernal says by the ablaze die giant. She strikes as her longsword becomes a torch. She strikes twice controlling herself not to rage. With giant dead, she quotes back Ablaze revenged and it returns back to a more regular looking longsword.
OOC:
33 points of damage.

Julian said nothing as he extended his hand toward the prone giant. A firebolt at point blank range should be sufficient contribution. The blows of his allies would be more than adequate to dispatch the sleeping beast. Still, he released his spell all the same as they executed it.
OOC:
22 damage from Julian

Korgazhar held his swing until everyone else had gotten their attacks in, then brought down his weapon again and again on the giant's neck, as if it were a beheading.
OOC:
Oops I mistyped the reroll as 1d20, should be 1d10, I'll halve that roll to a '6'. So total damage is 36+39+37=112 (assuming all 3 attacks hit)

The first three of you strike quick and true, your blades and magic striking the vital spots of the sleeping giant. Any other such attack would have felled your foe immediately, but to your shock the giant's eyes fly open and it tries to roll over and stand. It's mouth opens to cry out a warning, but the blade of Korgazhar cuts his throat and nothing but a gurgle emits. A second blow finishes the deed, and the giant falls lifeless back to his cot.

A minute later, you pull the rope up into the tower, a grateful Alain attached to the other end.
Mar 18, 2019 4:14 pm
"And now the one below, quickly." Korgazhar spoke with the efficiency of a killer, and got ready to go down the tower stairs to the main gate where the other sleeping giant lay.

Rolls

Stealth - (1d20+12)

(1) + 12 = 13

Stealth (disadv) - (1d20+12)

(19) + 12 = 31

Once Alain reached the top, Ælfric stowed the grappling hook and rope.

"And you didn't break your sword, Korgazhar," he said coldly. "Let's descend."

Rolls

Stealth - (1d20+23)

(1) + 23 = 24

Mar 18, 2019 10:50 pm
"This one's neck was too soft for my sword." Korgazhar mused in reply to Aelfric.
Mar 19, 2019 12:41 am
While the others pulled Alain up with the rope, Julian sent his Arcane Eye into the main (central) door leading into the keep. He couldn't see behind each of the three doors, but one was better than none.

He makes his way down the tower alongside the others.
OOC:
That roll is +13 not plus 3. Should be 10 higher, total of 18
