Chapter 1: Uncertain Times

Mar 21, 2019 1:35 am
[ +- ] Setting Info Repeated

It's a cold spring day in Moscow, the season late following a sudden cold snap that delayed the turn to better weather. As the sun rises, bright and crisp, you feel for the first time that it may grow warm enough to shed your jackets today. Maybe. If you're determined enough.

You've an appointment this morning with each other, a prearranged meeting of your cabal. It seems sometimes that your intended focus as a magical defensive wall, is usurped by tedium and petty squabbling for favour and comeuppance. Today is different.

The streets are abuzz with news of a new terror, the spectacularly profane murder of Sutulin Olegovich. A rising scion of the church, this son of a moderately affluent boyar had been found drowned in his own blood, hung upside down in a pool of fetid river water and his own viscera, arms tied to his sides. His death was hard, painful, drawn out, and conducted with all of the malice and ingenuity of the devil. All the hallmarks of the supernatural are repeated: strange runes (drawn in blood, of course), a mysterious smell, cold spots, and most strange, five dead mice found in the area around the pool, all seemingly having clawed out their own eyes.

You arrive at the Sanctum (in the order that you post).
Mar 21, 2019 10:27 am
The news of murder is disturbingly familiar. Stepan strides into the sanctum and goes directly for the tarot cards.

Stepan is sitting deep in thought with his feet on the dining room table. He toys with one card, looks at it, frows, look again. Impacently he waits for the others to show up, cause he is not going to check out that corps alone.
[ +- ] The card Stepan is toying with

Elena enters slowly, lowering her hood, revealing the kerchief wrapped around her hair. Her Falcon Familiar gives a small screech of greeting as they cross the threshold.
Troubled times....
Mar 21, 2019 7:56 pm
Dragomir rides in from the cold, watching his breath hit the air as he stables his horse behind the sanctum. He grabs his pack and proceeds into the building through the rear entrance. The Cossack is wearing a black overcoat with a thick mantle of bear fur, as well as his usual tall wool hat. His composite bow is looped across his chest and back.

Upon entering the sanctum, Dragomir sets his gear down on the closest piece of furniture, while throwing his coat and hat haphazardly onto a wall hook. He immediately snatches one of many bottles sitting atop a rough wooden shelf in the parlor. The Cossack uncorks the bottle with his teeth, spits the cork onto the floor, and begins taking generous swigs as he plops down into a chair. Dragomir pushes his one and only lock of hair away from his face and sets about warming his hands over the nearby brazier. The glow of the hot coals awashes him in soft orange light.

"It is madness in the streets on this morning. All of Muscovy is in a frenzy about the murder. Have these soft city folk never seen a body? Dragomir has seen many bodies. It is upsetting, but that is why the gods created vodka... to ease our suffering."

The Cossack chuckles to himself; he always seems to laugh at his own jokes. He rests back into the chair and reaches into one of the pouches of his tunic. Fishing around with his fingers, he removes a single silver coin: a newly minted kopek engraved with a horseman carrying a spear. Dragomir begins playing with the coin; absentmindedly rolling it across his knuckles with the fluid simplicity of someone who's done it a thousand times before.

Finally, as if just now noticing that other people are present, Chernobog nods to Babushka and her bird. He then looks over at Stepan. "What are the cards telling you, my Theurgist friend?"

"Humans created vodka because we are weak and like to forget." Says Diana, having heard what the Cossack had said from outside as she slowly made her to the haven. While she normally dreads the condition of the place, the warmness surely is a welcome feeling. She quickly closes the door and lets a breath that she didn't know she was holding out, taking in the stuffiness as she delicately taps her cheeks with her eyes shut, trying to slide the frost off her. A heavy and nevertheless thin white dress that reaches her ankles modestly accentuates her body and curves, while a barett of the same color is held on top of her head. A piece of the HRE's fashion that she was quite fond of. She slowly opens her eyes to find Chernobog drinking, and a frown naturally flowers in her face. "At least don't stain the floor." She chimes in as her eyes rest on Stepen, a small, fraternal smile dismissing her frown. Still standing in front of the door, she proceeds to go to the closest of chairs, carefully sitting on it as she offers a polite nod to the Babushka as well.

"And because humans are weak that they need our help. This is, after all, the reason this little group exists." She's not answering to the Cossack directly. At least not anymore. Her stare falls on the floor as she sighs. "That that man died is our fault. We are not here to simply solve problems but to prevent them from happening in the first place." Her back wearily rests against the chair, careful of the cold sensation. She clicks her tongue, dissatisfied with the state of current affairs as she raises her head contemplatively, both her hands resting on her lap on top of each other. She seems to be about to say something when inquisitively raise her eyebrow. "Hold on. Where is Kolya?"

"Hun?" Stepan looks up from his thoughts. "I can not read cards, but the stories of the dead man reminded me of this card, the hanged man. It's very possible that I am reading to much into is"
He jumps up from his chair, head over to stuffed elephant foot and umbrella/cane stand and plucks his sword-cane. "Let us go have a look, shall we? Before speculation gets to wild, mine needs to wrangle a bit."
OOC:
sorry for the short post, I'm typing while at work. I'll might elaborate a bit more later today.
Mar 22, 2019 2:00 pm
Kolya walks in, brushing snow off his jacket and muttering to himself. "Such a dreary day. Much better to stay indoors." He stops, glancing at the others gathered in the room. "Apologies. I found the most fascinating article this morning and lost track of time."
Mar 24, 2019 2:28 am
As Kolya walks in, Dragomir looks at Diana with mock exasperation.

"Do not say such things about Kolya! I will not stand for you insulting my Moros friend!"

The Cossack acts surprised when Kolya enters the room, despite hearing him speak. "Ah, there you are! Good morning. I have been avidly defending your honor from that Smolenskaya over there..." Dragomir can’t help himself and begins smiling.

Seeing Stepan on his feet and ready to leave, the Cossack’s smile drops to three-quarters strength. "Nyet, I have just arrived and must first finish my breakfast..." He waves the bottle in the air.

You know how gossip is Stepan. I am certain a large portion of the city already knows.
Mar 24, 2019 4:55 pm
"Baba Diya has a point. The bear is already out of the matryoshka. We can take a little time to warm ourselves. Olegovich will be no less dead when we get there."

Dragomir takes an absurdly long draught from the bottle.

"By the way, have I ever told any of you the story about the time I cut down five Tatar warriors at the Volga? Well..." It’s a tale he’s told several times. He begins to regale the rest of the cabal until someone stops him.

Kolya clicks his tongue and settles in at the table. "Idle disparagement does not concern me, he says, glancing at Diya. "It is when they stop talking about you that there is cause for concern."

He pulls a pouch out if his jacket and takes Dragomir’s bottle. Sniffing the vodka, he makes a face, then adds some powder to the bottle. Taking a sip, he grins, handing the bottle back. "If you are to drink this, this swill, at least do it with flavour. Try it now, Drago." He grabs a pastry, tearing a chunk off.

Agnë, as she is known by them, shoots a frown at her fellow Acanthus as Kolya enters the place. She listens to the whole exchange in bothered silence and sighs in discontent when Kolya seems to actually believe the Cossack. "Right. Go ahead and believe the man whose only true attachment is with a horse. That seems sound." Her tone does denote a mild irritation. She also sighs, loudly and exasperatedly, when Kolya takes a sip of the bottle as well. Finally, she rolls her eyes when Chernobog starts going on about his stories, again.

She suddenly gets up, and shoots everyone there but Stepan an annoyed glare. Her eyes, however, do focus on Chernobog. "Save it. You can do whatever you want, but I refuse to waste my time sitting here watching you drink. My free time is precious, and I'm already using it for this Cabal's mission, so." She swirls around and starts to walk to the door. "I'll go to the crime scene. If anyone actually cares about doing their part, I'll be seeing you there." She opens the place's door, and without ever looking back, she exclaims. "Otherwise... Ta-ta!"

Dragomir pauses in mid story and takes the bottle back from Kolya. He smells it and takes a swig.

"Ah, you and your alchemy, Kolya! It tastes just like the vodka my mother distilled for me as a child..."

Diana rises to her feet and dresses down the Cossack. He watches as she exits the sanctum, and then looks about the room at everyone.

"She is madly in love with me. It is obvious." Dragomir sighs and stands up. "...but I suppose she is not wrong. It appears I will be taking my breakfast to go."

He shoves the coin back into his pocket. Then puts on his hat and coat, and gathers his gear to leave.

Sutulin Olegovich's House

The son of the boyar, Sutulin lives large, but simply. His home was a former rectory before the prior monks abandoned it many years ago.

The Regent's soldiers have come and gone, and two remain to guard the entrance. "Sir doctor," one says to Kolya, and they move aside, allowing entrance to the building.

Inside, it is simple but spacious, almost opulent, but without being ostentatious. Subtly but wealthily decorated, the ambience is disturbed by the grotesque scene.

The stench of bowels released, of blood spilled, and just the hint of rot come too soon.

Behind the body, the signature piece of the room blazes to the eye, a wondrous icon (religious painting on wood) dominates the room, depicting the Virgin Mary throttling a bear.
Mar 28, 2019 7:05 am
Stepan Pisatel enters after Kolya. His professional manner faulters as the smell hit his nose. He goes to the icons, pretending to study them, having his back to the others while getting control of his body again and not throwing up.

Mar 28, 2019 4:27 pm
Dragomir enters the former rectory and crinkles his nose at the odor. He walks up to the body and studies it (but doesn’t touch it). He then moves on to the strange runes.

I’ll make an Investigation roll to see if I notice anything else about the body. And I’ll make an Occultism roll to see if I glean anything about the runes.

Academically, Stepan understands that icons are a somewhat rare form of religious art, using egg tempura based ink to paint on wood. As to the religious interpretation of this icon, he would need to test. Intelligence+Religion.
OOC:
Recall, Religion replaces Computers on the character sheet. Also, remember to check Reroll Aces as 10s always explode. If you have an ability that grants 9-again or even 8-again, you'll need to manually explode those successes.

Dragomir looks away from the runes and rubs his eyes, as though trying to remove their image from his mind. The Cossack curses in Ukrainian and glances around to make sure there are no Sleepers in the vicinity. He then shares what he’s learned with the others.

"Those runes... they are... representations; symbols of... para-doks. They were meant to contain something. But whatever it was, it is loose. Dragomir has a bad feeling about this..."
OOC:
If possible, I’ll make another Occultism roll to see if I can guess what these types of symbols might’ve been used to contain...

Agnë takes a step back while she narrows her eyes at the scene. An uncomfortable feeling of guilt starts brewing in her stomach, while she sighs and faintly shakes her head. "This shouldn't have happened in the first place." She mutters to herself.

As she raises her glare from the floor, she thankfully finds her companions already hard at work. Stepan is diligent as always, and although she directly dislikes the horsemen, it's hard to deny that he is useful, when he wants to be.

She stares absentmindedly for a few seconds while her companions do their thing, and it's only when Chernobog speaks that she snaps out of it. His words are worrying, but still. "Chernobog knows that he shouldn't refer to himself in the third person". She says, more beratingly than teasingly. "Well, I'll talk to the Regent's soldiers. We still don't know what exactly led to this place being guarded like an actual crime scene." She says, letting her companions know as she spins around and trots back to the entrance.

If there is one thing that she knows that soldiers dislike, is a Lithuanian that seems to be lying, so it's better if she doesn't. And while she tries to put up her typical trained smile, even today, it's hard for her to do so. They don't really deserve such effort. So she approaches them, no smile on her face, with frost in her cheeks. A flame still burns bright through her muddled blue eyes, and she can't help but narrow her stare at them. Her tone, as well, come off as displeased. By them. And the worse thing as that they're sure to see her as simply feisty. A beast to be tamed.

"Sirs." She says, the safety of the place giving her enough resolve to make it sound taunting. " We are wondering, what exactly happened? As in, who discovered the scene, how they alerted the authorities, the whole run-down." She rolls her eyes with an annoyed shrug." Yes, yes, that information is not normally given to the Doctor and his team, but from what we've shortly observed... It may very well be key to our investigation." She doesn't meekly look at the floor but holds both their gazes if needed.
OOC:
So, I have a question! I'm assuming that I have to roll Presence+Persuasion anyways, but I feel a bit uncertain over Striking Looks(2). I think we've never actually defined on the specifics of the merit for Diana, but my idea was for something like she looking not-typically-russian("exotic") and at the same time also being "traditionally" good-looking. In the above example, I don't think the Soldiers would take she being taunting very seriously, Diana being a foreigner and a woman, and would even find her fire kinda enticing(i.e "exotic"). Should I include the merits bonus for that? If not, on what occasions? Or maybe I should include it every time I think it counts but roll it in a separate roll?

Edit: Aight! I'll assume it's the same for specializations as well.

If you add such a merit and I decide that I'm not going to count it, I'll tick off the last two dice. If you include it as a separate roll, then it's even clearer.

In this case I do think it would count.

Dragomir crouches down for a moment to inspect the droplets more closely. As he watches Kolya follow the same trail of blood toward the pantry, the Cossack stands and pulls out his shiny kopek. He closes his eyes and rubs the coin with his thumb, enjoying the rush of supernal power he feels as probability distorts around him.

Once the spell is cast, Dragomir proceeds to the pantry, as well.
OOC:
Dragomir casts one of his Rotes, Fortune’s Protection (Fate ••)

It’s an Instant action, and I’m spending 1 point of Mana to make the spell last for the day. The spell is Covert and there are no Sleepers around, so I’m assuming no Paradox roll is needed. Dragomir’s dedicated magical tool is his coin, though it really doesn’t do anything for him in this situation.

I got three successes, so the extra successes go to the spell’s primary factor, is that correct?

Pro tip: you can roll 8d10, rather than manually typing out each 1d10.
Chernobog's spell creates magical armor rating 2 that lasts a day. Successes are "used to combat attempts to dispel the shield."

The spell rote is neither vulgar nor improbable so does not risk paradox. That is, nothing happens that a bystander would see as being magic, such as hovering in the air.
Mar 30, 2019 9:55 pm
OOC:
ok thanks, I wasn’t sure what to do with the successes; somehow missed that in the spell description.

I should also clarify; the dots of Fate were meant to indicate the level of the spell. Dragomir has three dots in the Fate Arcanum, so I think the armor is 3. Sorry

There is a strange odor in the air.
Apr 1, 2019 6:33 pm
Dragomir looks down at the hatch, raises an eyebrow, and motions for everyone to be quiet. He kneels and takes a moment to listen for any obvious sounds, then flashes a mischievous grin at the others.

"Hm... Yes." She nods at both men, simply for courtesy, as she makes her way back to the rest of the investigators. The information seemed sound enough. Simple soldiers wouldn't know much, would they? They're not much more than serrated toys, after all...

As the woman walks away, she can't help but let a breath out, much more at ease away from the soldiers. And while she would like to take a minute, her companions are most likely waiting for her. Or not, as she finds out when she returns to the scene of the crime, only to find the place devoid of any life. She sighs, slightly annoyed, as she notices a door at the back of the door half-opened. Walking toward it, she eventually finds herself in... A pantry? And all of her companions entertained with a trap door. Pisatel himself seems about to go down.

She approaches the group and crosses her arm, staring at how Pisatel eventually disappears. She can't help but murmur, however. "We should probably talk to the commissar from the Blue Company, at some point. His name is Nesterov Lev Ilyich, according to the guards. He should know about the events leading to this scene being reported to the authorities. With any luck, that is." The last phrase comes off as complaining.

OOC:
Question for Qralloq: I’d like to use Scrying upon the cellar before Stepan goes in, to see what’s inside. It’s a Space 2 effect. But it says the spell casting roll is modified by the mage’s sympathetic connection to the target person/place. And under sympathetic connection, it says that you cannot form sympathetic connections with unknown targets. Does that mean that you can’t scry into locations you’ve never been to? Should I assume Dragomir can’t scry into the cellar? Just want to know for future reference.
Apr 3, 2019 11:49 pm
OOC:
Right, that's my take on it. Unless there is a person or object you are familiar with that is in the location, you couldn't scry there.

The Cossack kneels down and proceeds to open the cellar hatch for Stepan.
Apr 4, 2019 1:47 am
The cellar door opens without a creak. A globule of viscera plops off of the edge and lands on the top tier of the ladder down, then slides off and lands down in the darkness below.

The cellar is larger than would be for a simple home, and stretches out to the left and right, but the light from above illuminates little, other than the impression of a shelf straight ahead and the glint of several dusty clay jars.
Apr 4, 2019 8:39 am
Stepan climbs down, avoiding to touch the sticky part of the ladder. When he reach the bottom, he takes a few steps to the side and call up. Throw down some lights please

Still waiting for Diana's roll, but Dragomir can act now, as can Diana if she rolls better than an 11.

The cellar drop just slammed shut, trapping Stepan inside. The strange odor grows suddenly stronger, a nearly overwhelming smell of rot. What do you do?

"St. John, St. Anthony, and St. Eustace be damned..." Mutters Diana to herself, as she readies to act.

While she quickly considers rewinding time, what could they actually accomplish? Someone else would have to endanger himself to trigger whatever happened, and they had certainly made sure that there were no magic traces floating around, right? ... Yeah, obviously. She believed in them.

She quickly unstraps her hand crossbow from under her dress and holds in her left hand, shooting a glare to her companions that were still there, Kolya and the Babushka. "Let's go." She says, more imperatively than as a suggestion. Looking down the hatch, she clicks her tongue and begins descending. "Pisatel! Are you okay?"

When Dragomir opens the cellar door, Diana sees the darkness, with Stepan pressed against the shelves. He glances up at you, blinking, but then he snaps his head to the left, pointing his sword, and freezing in concentration as if trying to see something in the dark.

Qralloq sent a note to runekyndig
Apr 5, 2019 8:48 pm
Stepan concentrates on holding his invisibility. Unless the beast in the dark can sense his aura, then he is hidden. In the dark, it is his best defense. It's an unseen stalemate but until backup arrives it's his best strategy.

He doesn't want to give his position away but also answer Diana. With the sword pointing into the dark, he taps the bottom ladder rung with the cane. He taps the ok signal (If the cabal has such a signal, otherwise its shave-and-a-hair-cut)
Apr 5, 2019 9:07 pm
A horrific human sized abomination of flesh and gristle, spare organs growing from everywhere, bounds out of the darkness to the bottom on the ladder, just below Diana. Two noses on three heads sniff around (the third head has only a festering hole where it's nose should be), coming within a few inches of Stepan, but it doesn't quite attack. Its hands, ruptured with bone into claws, flex and rise backwards as it focusses on Stepan's position by scent. A tendril of sinew and flesh snakes out of the darkness striking at Diana.

Diana takes three five lethal damage. The wound burns with raw, burning agony.
OOC:

Sorry, ignore those damage rolls. I had something else on my mind. The damage is the successes.

The creature had 9 dice for its attack (STR 5 + Brawl 2 + Weapon modifier 2), less Diana's defense of 3, for 6 dice. Successes are wounds. Ignoring the last die rolled, that's 5 successes.

So Diana takes 5 Lethal damage, and there is no soak roll.

The intruder's Defense is 3 if you are attacking.

Stepan has his sword raised ready to strike, but he is waiting for his comrades to act. He is not sure he can keep the invisibility going through combat. In a perfect world, the abomination will start to climb up then they will engage the heads, and then he will strike the legs or hamstring it. Then it should go tumbling down leaving a clear target from the top of the ladder.
Of the thousands of thoughts and ideas that Stepan have been struggling with, is this the best strategy he has come up with.

This is an extended action. Your combined successes count as research. With 6 successes in your investigations, you learn the following.
Together, with proper lighting and the benefit of your arcane senses and talents, you examine the cellar, the sacrifice, and the remains.

Some mages have recorded incidences of strange creatures referred to as Flesh Intruders that take up residence within the body of a victim. They are Abyssal creatures that quickly begin transforming the internal organs of a victim into strange, specialized organs for its own use, and breaking everything else within down into a vile, acidic mess that it can use as a weapon.

This creature was only partially formed, and after being summoned into the body of the sacrifice, had likely emerged, and then retreated to the cellar to hide while it finished becoming. The second body, the one hanging in the front room, was probably the sacrifice, the price for the intruder to break through from beyond the qlippothic spheres. Whose body the intruder had inhabited, is unknown.

Chernobog hears a scratching at the back door. He goes to investigate, expecting a cat or dog wanting in. When he opens it, he does find a cat, but it darts off. Dragomir looks up, and sees the dirty face of a small girl peeking out from an abandoned building. The girl ducks back, but in an incomprehensible pique of curiosity, raises a tiny hand and waves.

OOC:
In our ongoing learning of the magic system, note that Dragomir did not have the Rote he used. Having a rote can make casting easier, but not having it doesn't bar you from the roll. If he had the rote, he would have rolled Wits+Occult+Fate. Because he didn't, he rolled instead Gnosis+Fate. He succeeded in the Rote cast.
May 18, 2019 3:06 pm
The Cossack is startled for a few seconds, but then smiles and waves back at the little girl. He turns to the others.

"Fate is being kind today. I saw a child over there." Dragomir points. "We should make her acquaintance; she may have seen something. Which one of you is good with children? Dragomir is strong, intimidating man. I am maybe not best choice."

And I fear I may remind her of stories of other witches in huts
May 21, 2019 11:00 pm
When it becomes apparent that no one else will tackle the task, Dragomir sighs.

"I will speak to the child. Children love Dragomir. I probably have many running around the Ukraine..."

The Cossack begins heading toward the location where he spotted the girl.
May 23, 2019 2:53 am
The girl, lurking in the abandoned building, does not hide when Dragomir appears. She is dirty, dark haired, fierce eyed. She holds her ground and looks up at him. "Are you a Cossack horseman?"
May 24, 2019 6:17 pm
Dragomir crouches down so he is eye level with the child, and then grins.

"Hello little one. Yes, I am THE Cossack horseman. Tell me, you see anything strange in that building lately? You can tell Dragomir."

The brave girl says, "Da, a bad man. He killed someone in there. I heard the scream. They were in the for a long time. When he left, he came alone and there was no more scream."
May 25, 2019 5:36 pm
"And what did this bad man look like?"
May 25, 2019 11:13 pm
She gives you a child's description. "He was very tall, but not as tall as you. He had a big nose, sort of round, and brown hair, and it was short and a curly moustache and a beard that was brown and short, and he wore fancy boots that we're clean and pants and a shirt and a coat that had shiny buttons. Round and yellow."

OOC:
Does this describe the man we just encountered?
May 26, 2019 2:08 pm
No, the description, when related to the rest of the cabal, won't match anyone you've encountered so far.
Jun 1, 2019 10:05 pm
Pistatel returns to the compound and the rest of the cabal.
Jun 2, 2019 6:26 am
Stepan hurries back to the crime scene. He slips past the guards and finds (or try to) his cabal friends. Still invisible he speaks: Borislav Artemovich thinks that we are the Regents men and we have done this. He has called for troops to attack us. We should go, but Pisatel stands with you, even if unseen
Jun 2, 2019 7:48 pm
Kolya nods. "Agreed."
Jun 2, 2019 7:56 pm
Dragomir thinks for a second. In a moment of bluster, he asks, "How many troops? I can handle ten soldiers by myself. Maybe twenty if I take a few minutes to stretch. But more than that, we might have a problem." He winks at the child.

The child is disappearing at the use of the word 'troops', vanishing into the abandoned building.
Jun 3, 2019 11:19 pm
Dragomir nods. "We go back to the sanctum." The Cossack gets on his horse and begins to ride away.
Jun 5, 2019 12:26 am
At the sanctum, Dragomir will look for a parchment and some charcoal. He begins trying to sketch an image of the house that he and the others were just in. He’s using this to help focus his thoughts. The Cossack is not an artist, so the drawing is rudimentary.
OOC:
I wanted to try to scry the area we were in, to watch Borislav and the soldiers. But not sure what the penalty would be for the sympathetic connection...
Jun 5, 2019 12:55 am
Because you investigated the area for some time, and you have the drawing to focus on, I'll give you Known, I.e., a 4 dice penalty. If you have something from the house, that would improve to Intimate, -2.

[ooc] is it possible to say I grabbed something small and not noticeably gone? Babushka would know it would have been useful, this player not so much[/b]
Jun 5, 2019 12:33 pm
Babushka the magpie fishes through her pockets and finds some interesting stones, a few feathers, a scratching sample from the arcane circle, and a few items from the boyar's house's larder.
Jun 6, 2019 3:42 am
Dragomir looks at Babushka’s offerings with slight surprise. He then chuckles and waves a finger in the air in front of her.

"Haha, I should have known Baba Diya would have little tricks up her sleeve." The Cossack grabs the stones and larder items. "This will do nicely. Many thanks."

Dragomir places the items onto the picture, and then pulls his coin from his pocket. He kisses it and puts it on the table. The Cossack touches the tips of his fingers together, forming his hands into a box. He gazes through this window and at the drawing, trying to perceive the house. Dragomir reminds himself over and over that distance is only an illusion.

Dragomir conveys what he’s seen to the others.

"What are your thoughts? We have a description of a suspect. Do we know anyone who matches what the little girl described? Any uniforms that match his clothes?"
Jun 10, 2019 12:13 pm
The little girls description could match a number of people. Seems likely that they draw from the wealthy and definitely city types. No one immediately comes to mind.

You could investigate, try a few places, ask around.

Jun 11, 2019 6:47 pm

Dragomir then says, "We should ask around in the city. Maybe begin with those who knew the victim."

hmmm.... what do you guys think? A pocket watch? A porcelain figure?

What do I know, I am just a scribe with a letter for a poorly described recipient Stepan has a hard time covering the big grin on his face.
Jun 13, 2019 12:56 am
Dragomir gives Stepan a massive slap on the shoulder.

"Haha, and that’s why we keep you around, my friend." The Cossack studies the drawing for a moment. "Let us head into the city and get as much done as we can before dark. Dragomir is going to ask around in the taverns and brothels. Not for me, but for the investigation."
Jun 13, 2019 2:28 am
Sounds like you have a plan. How about each of you tell us what areas of Moscow you are going to investigate in. Describe your method and make an appropriate roll for that method. We'll do this montage style rather than through straight RP.
Jun 13, 2019 8:24 am
Stepan is contacting his scribe colleagues in the nicer to upper parts of Moscow. He has this (fake) letter about a merchant who lost a porcelain figurine and is asking for damages. The lie is bolstered by Stepan's interest in the story as his mother had a similar figurine and he knows how crushed she would be by its loss.

Diya has little luck, other than replenishing whatever supplies she actually needs.

Stepan asks around and is able to find someone who sold some parchment and ink to a man that fits the description. The man gave the name Lyubov Yefim, but the scribe is suspects the name is an alias, as Lyubov spoke it as if unfamiliar on the pronunciation.

Kolya does not find tell of a medical professional with that face, but does hear a rumor that someone with that description was seen speaking with the Ragana (a name for the Lithuanian witches that Elena had brought in when she was trying to conceive, and who continue to enjoy her host).

Dragomir finds a bartender who had begun to be suspicious about a man with that likeness who hangs around the area. Several prostitutes have gone missing, which is not unheard of, but a few within the last week beggars credulity.

Kolya will meet with the witches to see what information the6 are willing to share.
Jun 15, 2019 8:32 pm
Stepan, with the initial information from the others, draws into the mysteries of the universe, and feels sympathetic connections with the items taken from the house, and these prostitute murders,as this magic works best on strong emotional ties.
Dragomir finds himself chatting with a hopeful prostitute, who is hoping she can land an encounter. She has a haunted look, dark circles under her eyes, and only a little bit of prodding reveals that she saw her friend snatched, and taken forcibly into a coach four nights back. While not an unheard of start to a prostitute's night, some customers prefer it rough, Elena hasn't returned and she fears murder. She gives a fairly detailed account of the coach and horses, but saw little of the actual abductor.

Dragomir follows the trail to a wealthy area, but there the trail chills. It would take a lot of time to search the entire area, and would draw a lot of suspicion.
Kolya arranges for a discussion with the Ragana. They indicate that the man, Lyubov Yefim, is a Lithuanian who claims to be a 'nobleman', albeit one with ink stained fingers, and was delivering news from home. He pretended to be a merchant setting trade in Moscow, but the witches grew suspicious of his dark aura and cut the interview short. They know little else of him, and have not inquired after him in any way.

Diya will send her familiar out, while the task is mundane, he may have better senses than she does. she will have him fly around the areas the man was last seen
Jun 17, 2019 2:32 pm
I've posted a thread to collect the information you've gathered so far.

So far you have signs of a willworker operating with impugnity and trucking with forces from beyond the pale, the name of a Lithuanian man, and an area he was seen going to with a prostitute who is now missing, and a connection between the boyar's murder and a series of prostitute murders that preceded it.

In addition, this event seems to be bringing up old suspicions from the lower aristocracy and the Regent (usurper?) Elena, mother to young Ivan.

The trail seems to lead to this murderer, if only you could find him. Doing so will likely risk a deadly confrontation.
Jun 17, 2019 11:06 pm
"So we can probably assume that this Lyubov Yefim is taking prostitutes for some reason... possibly for other rituals similar to the one involving Sutulin. We know he is a Lithuanian nobleman, which makes sense since his trail led to a wealthy area."
OOC:
Also, the most recent missing prostitute and Ivan’s mother are both named Elena? Is that correct?
Jun 17, 2019 11:26 pm
OOC:
Correct, two Elenas are in play ;-)
Jun 18, 2019 7:00 pm
OOC:
Did the prostitute have anything that belonged to the missing Elena? Anything she could give me?"
Jun 19, 2019 3:16 am
Dragomir is given a small carved deer, worn smooth, oiled by touch. The missing girl cherished it, you're told.
Jun 20, 2019 8:44 pm
"So chances are that the prostitutes are serving as either sacrifices, or as hosts for these... flesh intruders. Perhaps Yefim’s choice of location was not an accident. The gauntlet at the house is thin, we know that much. This could be an after effect of the ritual he performed. Or it could be a requirement... he needs places like this. Do we know of any other areas in Moscow that are thin spots?

Dragomir further thinks aloud. "And Sutulin appears to have been drowned in river water. Was this random? We should check to see if any part of the wealthy district runs near the river?
