Fernal
The cells are bars, not doors. But inside it is black as night, through which even your dark sight cannot penetrate.

Julian once again tolled the bell of the dead, this time for the other bugbear.

Korgazhar and Aelfric leap on the remaining bugbear, slashing and stabbing him as he looks on in confusion toward Julian. You see the realization of what is going on come back to his eyes, and he whirls his morning star at Aelfric once again as he begins bellowing for help, the tolling bell around him appearing to have no affect.

The massive spiked ball slams into Aelfric's shoulder with a crunching sound as metal and leather meet, the spike piercing through and driving you sideways, as you manage to evade the second blow aimed at your head.

Ælfric created a shield of force to block the bugbear's attack, still hissed at the pain of impact, and did his best not to add any shouts to the bugbear's wailing.

"She picks now not to be bloodthirsty?!" he thought angrily as he stabbed his rapier at the bugbear again!
OOC:
**side eye**
EDIT!!!! I just remembered he's got Mage Armor up for AC 18, so casting Shield gives him temporarily AC 23, making that hit into a miss!
Guessing that 4's a miss.

The tolling sounds around to wounded bugbear. This time you see that the spell affects him, as he clutches at his skull and slumps against the wall. Wearily, he thrusts himself upright, just in time to deflect Aelfric’s attack.

Korgazhar could not believe either that the barbarian broke off from battle to examine and pick the cell door, and heard Julian's angry admonishment. He pressed on with his assault on the bugbear, raining a series of blows to try to finish him before more alarm could be sounded.

With a final blow, Korgazhar finishes off the remaining guard, nearly cleaving it in two with a flurry of blows. Meanwhile, Fernal gives a satisfied smile as she hears the 'click' of a latch releasing. The lock slips open, giving access to the black interior of the cell.

Movement: Normal
Time In Steading: 32 minutes

Once again, Korgazhar entertained thoughts of killing Fernal. It was not the first time he disagreed with her actions, which endangered them all. However, they were in the midst of something critical, and it'd be unwise to fall into internal conflict. He gave her a deadly glare as he looked through the bugbears bodies for the keys to the cells.

"Idiot."

Rolls

Investigation (for keys, if it's not obvious) - (1d20)

(10) = 10

Korgazhar
A quick check of the guards reveals that the first one has a set of five keys on a ring.

Having stepped into the room fully now, Julian took a special interest in the seemingly magical darkness emanating from the cells. "Do not venture into that darkness Fernal. You might find more than prisoners inside." As he spoke, he racked his brain for knowledge on how this seemingly permanent magical darkness might work, and how it might be deactivated, and looked about the room for any sort of glyph or other magical mechanism that might be sustaining it.

While you do not find anything that might act as some sort of trigger, you recall in your studies that some magi, especially powerful ones, could craft spells much like they could a magical item, bringing a near Permanency to it. Some could last until dispelled, some just significantly enhanced the time of effect, but some of the more powerful sort could make an effect last forever, unless some powerful magic counteracted it.

"I do not have the means to dispel this darkness. Perhaps..."
OOC:
Could the divination wizard "The Third Eye" be used to penetrate this darkness?
[ +- ] The Third Eye
I suppose this would depend on how strict a definition of "invisible" you choose to follow. Is a creature in darkness "invisible" since it meets the dictionary definition of "unable to be seen; not visible to the eye.", or is it not-invisible because it very strictly doesn't have an invisibility or greater invisibility spell cast on it?
