Against the Cult: Party at the Mill (1.1)

I run back upstairs looking for my friends. If they're not visible or are otherwise engaged, I will attempt to hide while keeping my eye out for the man who may or may not be coming back up the stairs. Or, you know, for some slightly easier target. Preferably one far away who can't stab at me with pointy things.

(Edited by DM to adjust/add some details...)

Durren hears the screaming of a human in mortal agony and accelerates up the hill past the kobold. He crests the rise and looks down a long, gentle slope to another mill. A dwarf stands in the open doorway on the north side of the mill facing him. As he runs down the slope to investigate, a young man or slim woman that he can just see standing around the corner of the Inn takes aim with a bow and fires it. The screaming is cut off abruptly. Looming next to her is a small blue dragon walking on its hind legs. Running the rest of the way to the nearest entrance, Durren trots through the northern door of the mill, sword ready. His eyes take a moment to adjust to the dimness of the interior, at which point he sees quite a strange assortment of characters, though he can't tell as of yet who he will fight...

Durren, roll initiative.

Shiztik is relieved when the Big Man (Durren) passes him and heads over the hill after hearing the human screams. The kobold thought the Big Man was chasing him, and was worried how it was going to shake him. Now that the Big Man has left, Shiztik slows down and searches the hillside...*Somewhere around here...Aha!*

CouchLord0510, I've just edited your previous post to get you to the mill in a more direct way than coming in through the western door. I'm sorry about that; I was going to get you to the mill in about two more posts anyway. Please roll initiative.
CouchLord0510 says:
OOC: who is left in the building? Thugs, I mean...
Durren can see five people inside the mill: the dwarf has walked in and is helping a prone man on the floor, a gnome just coming up the stairs, and two humans covered with blood in mortal combat, staggering around the mill wheel in the center of the room. One has an axe and is streaming blood from a gash in his neck, and the other wields a club and is streaming blood from a gash in his side.

ROUND THREE

Aanbo inspects the man on the floor. He's covered in flour and wears an apron, rather than the leather jerkins the others wore. He has blood on his hands, and looks like he's been beaten about the head and shoulders.

Aanbo also sees movement out of the corner of his eye, under the stairs that lead upward.

Durren clutches his sword and tries to decide who he is for. He notices that there are several thug-looking men already dead and decides to try to separate the two warriors.

END OF ROUND TWO

The blows from the club gash his scalp and rock his head to the side, but Quest never takes his eyes off of the man he'd invaded (Thug 4). His cold, unblinking stare is unnerving to the human, who hesitates for a moment despite all his rage. The half-elf straightens again, raising his head as the other human behind Quest is beating him and Quest's eyes flare cerulean once more. The thug facing him (#4) makes a brief mewling noise, then all his muscles contract violently, and then relax in death. The man behind Quest does not understand what is happening, or why his friend has just passed out, or how the intruder is able to stand under his rain of blows. The club is beginning to crack, but Quest stands there with immense disdain, and slowly begins to turn toward the weak-minded fool who is attempting to harm him.

Twelve seconds have passed since Ogbar first stepped through the mill's door.

END OF ROUND TWO.

Round three initiative:
- Aanbo (checking on the fallen man)
- Man in the mill room (Thug 1)
- Men in the office room (Thugs 3 & 5)
- Thacogygax
- Everyone in the basement
- Xana
- Ogbar
- Klak (move submitted - attacking Thug 3)
- Durren
- Quest (move submitted - attacking Thug 5)
- Sara

ROUND THREE

A previously concealed (but just now spotted by Aanbo) man steps out from where he was hiding under the stairs. Perhaps he's cowardly, or perhaps he's just going for the closest target, but he rushes up and attacks the dwarf with a sword and a yell. We'll call him Thug 6.

Next door, Thug 3 makes a last-ditch effort to try to save his own skin, by trying to disarm Klak (Klak must make an Athletics or Acrobatics check).

Thug 5 does not have this option, as Quest is apparently unarmed and is still effortlessly killing his friends and, terrifyingly, freezing him without even looking at him! He redoubles his smashing with his club, breaking it over Quest's head with his savagery.

Rolls

Thug 6 attack on Aanbo, damage - (1d20+1, 1d6+1)

1d20+1 : (13) + 1 = 14

Round Three

The aproned man on the floor groans and rolls over, slowly coming awake again.
Aanbo manages to get his arms up before the sword can slash his throat, and the dwarf and his human assailant are struggling on the other side of the mill stone from the barbarian and his thug opponent.

The thug struggling with Ogbar dodges around one of the pipes, and then ducks back, attempting to fake the barbarian into going the other way, so he can hit him from the side. The barbarian does not fall for the trick and they resume their melee, each of them finding the floor slippery with blood.

Thacogygax steps into the mill, freezing Thug 6, who is fighting Aanbo. However, the human is made of stern stuff and ignores the frost riming his beard.

Stuff happens in the basement, which no one in the party detects.

Then a trap door in the ceiling lifts up and falls back with a thud. As soon as it opens, three arrows fire down at the five intruders in the mill room: Aanbo, Thacogygax, Xana, Ogbar, and Durren. Unfortunately, the trap door opens to the south, and so the arrows are aimed at that half of the room: two at Xana and one at Thacogygax. Xana is hit by an arrow, but the arrow shot at the dragonman shatters on a scintillating aura that wraps around him.

Xana takes 4 hp damage, which brings her to 0.

Xana collapses with an arrow in her lung.

Round order:
- Aanbo (checking on the fallen man, done - move submitted for round four can be changed with circumstances if you wish)
- Man in the mill room (Thug 1, done)
- Men in the office room (Thugs 3 & 5, done)
- Thacogygax (done)
- Everyone in the basement (done)
- Everyone upstairs (done)
- Xana (make a death save)
- Ogbar
- Klak (move submitted - attacking Thug 3)
- Durren
- Quest (move submitted - attacking Thug 5)
- Sara

CORRECTION: The CON save should be attributed to Thug 6, not Thug 1. Thug 6 (fighting Aanbo) was Thac0's target.

I step back into the doorway and fire and arrow at the man engaged with Aanbo. I see Xana fall, and suppress the urge to rush to her aid - it would be no good if two of us were to be riddled with arrows and dying. I step forward, moving protectively towards Xana's body, and prepare another arrow.

As the fusillade of arrows fly, Thacogygax throws up a warding gesture. An invisible barrier springs up around him and the arrow which would surely have hit him bounces off the magical shield and clatters to the ground.

Durren makes a quick decision: if it comes to a battle, he is for the strange assortment of characters. But he always tries to make peace first, so he clenches his sword and bellows in three languages (Imperial, Primordial, Elvish) "STAY YOUR HAND!" Everyone in the room is momentarily still at his sudden appearance. "Why do you fight like this? Has not Black told you that these are our friends? Why do you attack them? Can't you see that (1) They are more than a match for your clubs and (2) they have come from our mutual master, Black?" he growls, addressing the thugs and men in the attic (this in Imperial). In Elvish and Primordial he says "I am not with Black. These men are evil, but killing them is not to our advantage. We can gain more information from them alive and trusting than dead, and it is not for us to kill them - we should turn them over to the authorities."

ROUND THREE, END:

Xana coughs and sputters, writhing weakly on the floor. She feels the pull of the dark powers thirsting for her, and she resists their pull.
Death save successes: 1

As Ogbar and his opponent are locked in mortal combat, the human warrior Durren running towards them yelling about peace distracts Thug 1, and Ogbar is able to land a good blow. Durren interposes his blade between the barbarian and the human bully...and the thug slowly topples backwards, dead.

Sara has stepped back into the doorway and has been aiming. She adjusts her aim slightly to shoot past the human warrior and releases; the arrow flies true and hits Thug 6 hard, sinking into his torso up to the fletching. She then nocks another arrow and moves cautiously into the room toward the dying gnome, eyeing the opening in the ceiling.

Klak looks incredulous at the human who has the effrontery of trying to wrest his axe away from him. The human grabs the haft of the weapon, struggles mightily with a grunt of effort. Klak looks at him, frowns, and shakes his head.

Then Klak chops the man's legs off. With that, thug 3 is dead.

Thug 5 has broken his club over Quest's head, but Quest remains unflappable. He turns slowly, and with one finger wipes a trickle of blood from his brow. Thug 5 backs away in horror, shaking his head. Then he dies, collapsing like a marionette with its strings cut.

Round order for round four:
- Aanbo (move submitted)
- Thug 6
- Thacogygax
- Everyone in the basement
- Everyone upstairs
- Xana (make a death save)
- Ogbar
- Klak

- Quest

ROUND FOUR

With a flurry of blows, Aanbo the dwarf slaps the sword arm of Thug 6, breaking the arm and knocking the sword out of the man's hand. The sword spins up into the air and Aanbo lands two punches to the human's chest. The thug flies backwards and does not rise again. Aanbo holds out his hand and the sword hilt lands in it.

The aproned man on the floor next to Aanbo holds his head and sits up with a groan.

Thacogygax is up next.

- Aanbo
- Thug 6
- Thacogygax
- Everyone in the basement
- Everyone upstairs
- Xana (make a death save)
- Ogbar
- Klak
- Durren
- Quest
