[IC] Graveyard Shift: Session 1

As Nekurr tries to help her in the kitchens, Lady Dribbage ushers him back into the drawing room. "Nonsense! I wouldn't hear of it. Please, make yourself at home. I won't be but a minute."
OOC:
I'd rather let everyone participate in the conversation with her, but we can say that Nekurr is able to position himself near the kitchen door and act as a sort of lookout thanks to his proposal to the Lady. That means we can add a boost die to steef99's Perception check, and one to Tronus's check.
Mengus and Nera do as thorough a job as they can looking over the room. From what they can tell, the place is as Lady Dribbage described it: A drawing room for someone of noble station, albeit one that is in a state of disarray after a move. It's difficult to tell what items belonged to Vizeron Dribbage, but much of what you see could easily belong to either him or his niece. There are no signs of secret cubbies or passageways that you can detect from your cursory search.
OOC:
Steef99 and somebox, you have 2 advantages to spend on your Perception check. Any suggestions for how you'd like to spend them?
Tronus, meanwhile, inspects the crate he's sitting on.
OOC:
This sounds like it could be either a Knowledge (Geography) check or a Negotiation check keyed to Intellect instead of the customary Presence. I'll let you roll either, Remnant. Difficulty is Average; take a boost from Nekurr's lookout, and a second if you ask Barvek for his help.

Rolls

boost die to the Perception check

2 Advantage

Total: 2 Advantage

OOC:
Reminder to our mages: You have access to the Utility magical action, which can be used to "detect magic" in an area. Let's say it works out to short range for an Easy difficulty, or further if you increase the difficulty. I'm not saying that there's any magic in this room, but I wanted to make sure you weren't forgetting the utility of your spells. :)

OOC:
totally forgot my magics :D I was wondering more in terms of flipping some story points again for the burning questions:
Is she after the money (rent income)?
Is she a necromancer?
Is she really who she says she is? ;)
Nekurr stays by the door and Lady Dribbage walks into the kitchen and quickly wonders if the lady moved in for the "graveyard's rent" money while focusing around the room (and inside the boxes) for any traces of magic.
OOC:
oops, I though easy was PP and increased the range to PPP... but easy is P :(

Total: 1 Failure, 2 Advantage

"You really have faith the younger folk would see everything we'd see?" Tronus turns a little surprised raising an eyebrow.
OOC:
Guess I'll go with negotiation off Int. I'll add the boost from Barvek if he states he assists.
Looks like Tronus beats crate in weight class sitting.

Average Negotiation Check off Int with boost from lookout

1 Advantage

Total: 1 Advantage

OOC:
Oops--I misread your post, Remnant, and added a boost for Nekurr, but you already did that. Yes, feel free to roll another boost if arMedBeta indicates Barvek is helping. Looks like the check will fail either way, but you will have at least 1 advantage to play with. Any ideas?
OOC:
To CESN: There's not enough time for Nekurr to both act as a lookout and search the room for magic items, but I didn't make that very clear (I was just reminding you and mcneils5 that you have magical options at your disposal). I'll let the spell count this time. Remember that casting a spell costs 2 strain, so please indicate that on your character sheet. You've succeeded with 2 Advantage. If you want, you can use that advantage to immediately recover the 2 strain, or you can do something else with it.
As Nekurr thinks about the possibility of magical items in the room, he hears a thud and realizes his holy symbol has somehow fallen out of his pocket. Across the room, he hears a wooden rattle and sees that Hildarr's wand has rolled out onto the top of a crate. Everything else in the room seems to be in place.

OOC:
Hey, all -- point of clarification: While Lady Dribbage is out of the room, I only meant for you to get one action each. I should have made that clearer! So Nekurr is on lookout, Nera and Mengus are doing a quick search of the room, and Tronus is inspecting a crate. Hildarr and Barvek can both do something, as well; if I don't hear from you by this evening, I'll advance the story.

I let Nekurr get off a spell since I wasn't clear at first about the one-action limit. I'll leave it to CESN to report the results of that spell IC if they want to. :)

Barvek scans the room looking for signs of the break in. "Oh, it's not that I think they'd see everything we'd see, but they need a chance to do things on their own," he says to Tronus. He gives a wink "Or at least let them think they are."
Aug 8, 2019 11:35 pm
OOC:
arMedBeta, that sounds like a Perception check. Difficulty is Hard (PPP) due to the disarray, but you get a Boost from Nekurr's lookout. If Barvek is just glancing around from his seat, that's a Setback.

We've had three other rolls made that netted 2 advantages apiece, but no one has indicated how they want to spend those advantages. (Perception check by Nera and Mengus, Negotiation check by Tronus, detect magic spell by Nekurr). PLEASE remember to suggest uses for your advantages and triumphs when you roll them. Genesys games get really bogged down in PbP if the GM has to ask for how the players want to spend their narrative symbols. Even if you're new to the system, just say something generally positive that you'd like to come about from your roll when you roll advantages. As long as it's related to your roll and not the aim of your roll, I'll try to work with you!

One other note: From here on out, if players roll advantages and don't tell me what they want to do with them, I'll either ignore them or just choose something for you. (But that takes all the fun out of a narrative game like this! So please please please propose something!)

Barvek takes a look from where he's at.
OOC:
With one advantage, maybe he manages to notice something of interest in one of the crates? Or maybe he figures out some detail about Lady Dribbage that could help in talks with her later.

Looking for signs of break-in

1 Success, 2 Advantage, 3 Failure, 1 Threat

Total: 2 Failure, 1 Advantage

OOC:
Oh shoot I forgot about the advantage! If it were up to me I'd use it to discern something worthwhile that does belong to Olaire, so that we may rule it out or investigate further.

OOC:
yep! totally forgot the advantages with all the extra action issue :( Since I was looking fo magical stuff, can I use it to notice something noteworthy, but mundane? Maybe something on the walls, or something out of place or clearly missing? (since everyone is looking for stuff that is there, I could the do the opposite)

Just a quick question about this before I post something IC - I didn't think the Utility action could go beyond a single difficulty die? So anything more difficult than an Easy check isn't possible

OOC:
Good question. I'm kind of extrapolating here. They outright say that something like "Detect Magic" or "Mage Light" should be an easy check, but what if you're trying to Mage Light a spot at medium range from you? That sort of thing should up the difficulty in my opinion, just like with other spell actions.

OOC:
Since arMedBeta went that path, I'll use mine to figure out what kind of wood the crates are made of or if opening these crates can be done by Lady Dribbage. Whichever falls more in the vein of the action and narrative. Granted meta we're just hired to find her Uncles status but due diligence and all that. *wiggles moustache*

@mcneils5
In theory anything can be more difficult depending on the situation or the route taken to use Utility since it's a catch all that doesn't fall into other types. In a modern setting, an "easy" medicine check in the back of a moving car in a gun fight weaving through traffic frantically might be more than just one purple and a setback no?

OOC:
Tronus was trying to figure something out about the weight of the crates and whether Olarie would have needed help with them, so using your advantage for that negates the failed roll IMO. I'll riff on that idea, though, and give you a detail about the crates' craftsmanship.
From this vantage point, Tronus isn't able to ascertain much about the crates; they seem a decent size, but for what he can tell, they may have only been used to store linens or other light-weight items. They do bear a stamp on them that seems to be the mark of a shipping company of some sort.

During their search of the premises, Nera and Mengus do notice a couple of things that seem to be added by the lady: The first is a fancy-looking vase of fresh-cut flowers sitting on a small table. The second is a wrapped bundle of clothing with patterns and fabrics popular among young women in the Free Cities. Signs suggest Lady Dribbage intends to stay in the house permanently.

As he scoops his holy icon back up, Nekurr notices a discolored rectangular patch of wall over the mantle, as if there used to be a painting of some kind hanging there.

Finally, Barvek doesn't see anything that suggests a break-in, at least not in this room. Yet he does overhear the distinctive whistle of the lady's teakettle from the kitchen. It's one Barvek recalls from a case long ago involving a person with very discerning tastes in tea. Perhaps Lady Dribbage or her uncle had the same appreciation for fine teas?
OOC:
That leaves Hildarr to try something. I'll have the lady return very soon!
Aug 9, 2019 6:08 pm
OOC:
Yeah that works for me didn't think of it that way for the advantage. Unsure if it's a plank that's branded with a stamp or ink stamp.
Tronus makes a mess of being sneaking or astute. He makes a copy of the stamp hoping Barvek doesn't notice him.

Well I guess they noticed more then me... he chides himself.

Hildar takes a sniff of the air in the room before closing their eyes and extending a hand, a faint glow begins around it as he moves around.
OOC:
Going to use Utility to scan for magic and increase the difficulty once which should take it up to Medium range (I'm hoping that will cover most of the house at least)

Rolls

Utility (detect magic)

5 Success, 1 Advantage, 1 Threat

Total: 5 Success

Aug 12, 2019 3:12 pm
Hildar feels his wand gently lead his hand and arm so that the wand points toward Nekurr's holy symbol, now safely back in the Half-Catfolk's possession. Then the wand jerks sideways, taking Hildar's arm with it. Its tip points toward an adjoining room on the first floor. A closed oaken door stops the Elf from seeing what lies beyond, but the wand's tip glows for a moment more before returning to its normal state.

In the kitchens, the sound of the whistling teakettle subsides and is replaced by clinking dishes. Lady Olarie Dribbage returns to the drawing room, holding a tray in both hands with a teakettle, cups, and saucers stacked on top. She sets these on the mantle. "Sorry for the delay!" she says as she begins passing around cups and saucers. "Sir, I'll take your help now, if you don't mind," she says to Nekurr, as she begins pouring for those who request something to drink.

Lady Dribbage continues to move about the room, talking as she does so. "I'm so happy to see you all here! I've heard wonderful things about Argus Investigations, so I knew I just had to call on you about my uncle. I assume Lady Argus has you up to speed, correct? My uncle has been missing for quite some time now, and with a break-in just a couple nights ago, it seems I couldn't have arrived a moment sooner! I'd like to see this place back up and running, with a full contingent of servants. But I need to know what's become of my uncle first..."
OOC:
Please start with any questions you have! No roll required (yet). She's a willing interlocutor at this point.
Aug 12, 2019 4:31 pm
"My pleasure" Nekurr readily helps Lady Dribbage with the tea. "Now that you mention it, could you tell us more about this break-in? Maybe you'd be so kind as to take us to where it happened, after tea of course, so we can search for any evidence leading to the culprit."
