[IC] Graveyard Shift: Session 1

Nekurr silently moved to check the shelves, wondering if there were any religious books, references to Vizeron's time with the church or worse... some kind of comments on undead. Before he manages to do so, Nera bumps into the pedestal. Quickly trying to prevent a disaster, The half-catfolk awkwardly tries to catch the ornate egg...
OOC:
eheh, clearly not the best one to catch stuff :D
right so that is a fairly normal failure with a advantage and despair...
Can I make so that I failed to grab, but either throw it back into the air clumsily giving someone else a change or it falls but does not break? Even though with the despair we'll probably have the shelves fall on us ;)

Hildar tries to hide his excitement as they enter the room. Since he felt the magic lurking in there time has seemed to drag by until the Lady let them into the room. Trying to ignore everything else that is going on he focuses his attention and tries to lock into the magical aura again.

Tronus focuses on the desk checking the craftsmanship slightly oblivious to the shenanigans of the group.

"She might be waiting for the servants to come to do anything labor intensive for cleaning..." Tronus guesses mostly distracted by what he's looking at.

Rolls

Desk Check Easy Perception w/ boost from Nera

3 Success, 1 Advantage, 1 Triumph, 1 Threat

Total: 3 Success, 1 Triumph

Aug 19, 2019 3:08 pm
OOC:
Remnant, how do you want to spend that Triumph? I was planning for the desk to be locked, so it could be a simple as it being unlocked. But feel free to spend it some other way.
Hildar repeats the magical motions he performed in the drawing room. Sure enough, he finds his hand pulled by the wand yet again, as if it were some kind of divining rod. The tip points directly at the empty spot on the shelves that Nera has identified. As he approaches the shelf, Hildar can see that no matter where he moves his hand, the wand settles once more on a single book lying flat in this gap within the volumes.

Just as he gets close to being able to read the title, Nera bends down to inspect something on the floor. The Catfolk bumps a marble pedestal, which begins to topple. Nekurr happens to be standing nearby and swoops in to grab an ornate egg sculpture, now plummeting toward the floor. The Half-Catfolk's reflexes prove a bit too slow, and the egg hits the floor and shatters! Even worse, everyone nearby can now see that the pedestal is about to topple over, as well. Its impact would certainly damage the ornate tiling on the floor...
OOC:
So, simple failure means the egg shatters! The Despair means the pedestal is also toppling. But the Advantage means that someone can make a go of catching it. Same difficulty as before, not upgraded: Average with a setback (PPK).

I'll resolve Tronus's inspection once I hear what Remnant wants to do with the Triumph. (Please remember to propose things when you roll them!)

steef: What is Mengus doing?
Aug 19, 2019 6:08 pm
OOC:
Maybe I gleam something from the successes and for the triumph maybe a hidden compartment masked in a blind spot when sitting down that blends in with the grain of the wood so you can't see the seam? I'll let someone else deal with locked stuff.
Aug 19, 2019 8:07 pm
...Uh-oh. Is all Nera can say before Nekurr tries to catch the falling egg. She winces as it clatters to the floor, but doesn't have time to make a snappy comment before her eyes notice the pedestal in a dire situation as well. Deciding she might be better equipped to handle the situation she tries to stop the fall.
OOC:
Another athletics/coordination check here we go...

Hildar smiles mostly oblivious to the other goings on in the room and reaches out and plucks the book from the shelf and begins to examine it.
Aug 20, 2019 1:31 am
The sound of the shattering egg echoes through the study. However, the large number of books in the room muffle the sound at least a bit. You're not sure if Lady Dribbage has heard the din from the kitchens.

Nera: Fortunately, Nera stops the pedestal before it can hit the floor. But the solid marble pillar is heavy--the lithe Catfolk is not used to such heft. She manages to right the pillar, but the effort seems to have caused her to pull a couple of muscles in her left arm.
OOC:
2 Threat = 2 strain to Nera.
Tronus: Meanwhile, Tronus has been carefully inspecting the desk in the corner of the room. It seems that Vizeron Dribbage made frequent use of the desk, as the surface holds an inkwell, several quills, an oil lamp, and a datebook that might warrant further scrutiny. Beyond that, the desk only has one apparent drawer, which the Dwarf finds to be locked (with no key readily available). The fine workmanship of the woodgrain catches Tronus's eye, and he traces the contours of the desk's sides. In the process, he sees what looks like a gap in the woodgrain. It's suspicious enough that the Dwarf pulls on either side. Ah ha! A hidden drawer. Tronus finds some yellowed papers inside.

Hildar: Hildar grabs the book his wand has identified in both hands. The volume has a satisfying heft and supple leather binding characteristic of magical tomes. The spine and cover bear a title in a script that looks familiar somehow...
OOC:
Mcneils5, give me an Easy (P) Knowledge (Forbidden) check, since all we're trying to do is identify the script and translate the title of the book.

OOC:
I'm not sure how to hide a roll, so you all know that Lady Dribbage heard the egg break (from a meta-gaming level). But your characters don't! I'm open to any suggestions for how to spend the threat on her check -- something that will work to your advantage.

"...Ow." Nera winces from the physical exhortation, her voice becoming much quieter as she experiences the pain. "...There are footprints, dirty ones."
OOC:
Maybe we hear her coming, or if that's too much a boost on a check on the next persuasion type check.

Also you can hide a roll with the visibility tab when making a new roll, with a couple of options. Keep in mind the GM always see's when a player makes a secret roll.

OOC:
Not sure how creepy/haunted the house is but could an even louder noise get her attention? Ghosts in the attic? zombies in the graveyard? the thief coming back?
"Nice reflexes!" Nekurr compliments Nera with a smile "Thank you". He then looks around the room and to what is left of the egg. He quickly starts collecting the broken pieces as he turns to Hildar "What's up with that book?"

Tronus' lip curls slightly behind his thick moustache and looks up to let the group know what he's found squirreled away when he sees the scene and looks from Nera to Nekurr. His brow knits and he sighs slowly.

Rubbing the bridge of his nose he walks over and looks as the pieces as they're collected. Looking at the bust he shakes his head.

"Gar Vanedi grant me the spark to discern worth in all things... 'Eye of the Merchant'..."
OOC:
Let me know if you think it's Augment or Utility to use, granted it's a perception check but I think it kinda fits. Was going to look at the egg puzzle pieces but that's done now.

Finding the magical tome fills Hildar with a sense of wonder and excitement. What secrets might the book hold? Even better, the book looks like it would fit perfectly in the Elf's pack! Nevertheless, Hildar doesn't recognize the script on the cover and wonders if he might need to find some other way to translate it.
OOC:
mcneils, what a weird roll! Go ahead and use 4 of those to get back to full strain. For the other 2, we can always say the book is perfectly shaped to slip into your satchel, granting you +2 boosts on any Stealth checks to sneak it out.
As Nera and Nekurr resolve the mishap with the pedestal, Nekurr regards the remains of the ornate egg. Now in about a dozen pieces, Nekurr notices that the artwork is actually, at its base, an actual animal's egg. Layers of paint and gemstones have been affixed to this. The egg's size suggests it came from a large animal; indeed, Nekurr worries that it may, in fact, be a dragon egg--making it a priceless artifact thad Olarie Dribbage likely won't take kindly to losing. At least the Half-Catfolk is able to determine that the egg has little bearing on the burglary or Vizeron Dribbage's current wherabouts.
OOC:
Note that I added a setback to your roll, CESN, to account for the broken state of the egg. You added 1 threat to the roll, meaning that something about Nekurr's analysis is slightly off.
OOC:
Remnant, can you clarify what Tronus is trying to do with his divine magic? Is he asking for some divine guidance to determine who is depicted in the bust, say?
Suddenly, you hear the clip-clop of feet approaching from the drawing room. Your assumption that it's Lady Dribbage is confirmed when you hear a voice at the door: "Is everything all right in there?"
Aug 21, 2019 9:13 am
At the sound of Lady Dribbage approaching Hildar slips the book into his pack and makes a hushing motion to Nekurr before shouting towards the door "Everything is fine my lady, we were just...um...moving some of the furniture in our search for clues"

OOC:
I didn't think of that, that might be a knowledge roll of sorts. The intent was more along the vein of assistance in appraisal since I figure I'd still need a roll.
"Oy, she's meet use for less than a few wee hours starting to lie now is going to complicate things... We tell the truth and take our lumps." Tronus states quietly from where he is.
OOC:
Also I should have probably looked at the paper in my hand too.
Aug 21, 2019 2:56 pm
OOC:
Let's resolve Tronus's divine spell first. Sounds like you want to determine the market value of the bust? Let's go with Augment; roll an Average (PP) Divine check. If successful, you will get to roll +1 green on any checks you make. Since we're not in structured time, let's say the spell will last for about 15 minutes, enough to appraise the statue and possibly to roll a social check versus Lady Dribbage.
OOC:
Regarding the lady, sounds like Hildar is lying about the broken egg, but Tronus is saying y'all should come clean. Ultimately, it's mcneils's choice, since Hildar spoke first: Either roll a Deception check, or let Tronus try to cover with a Charm check.

For Deception, basic Difficulty is Average (PP) with a setback (K) for the fact she heard something crash, but take a boost due to the door being shut. If you go this route, I'll upgrade with a Story Point, so final pool will be + Boost + RPK.

For Charm, Difficulty is Hard, upgraded (RPP) with a boost, since you've got permission to be in the room. However, add a setback, as well, to account for the conflicting responses the lady is getting. (B+RPPK)

OOC:
Guess I'll get the roll down first with a flashback.

I'll use advantage to regain strain, Meta: spell failed since Tronus can't concentrate thinking they'll have to pay for the damaged egg.

2 Success, 3 Advantage, 1 Failure, 1 Threat

The bust, as far as Tronus can tell, seems perfectly ordinary. It's sculpted from marble, features a human man of about middle age, bearded and looking quite solemn. A thick coating of dust suggests that the bust hasn't been touched in quite some time.
OOC:
2 advantage -- Maybe the figure looks somehow familiar, so you get +2 boosts on Knowledge (Lore) to identify him, or Negotiation (Intellect) if you instead want to know the market value of the bust.

Nera doesn't even want to entertain Tronus's plan, and very quietly sneaks next to Hilder, whispering in their ear. "I can help cover you."
OOC:
Does providing assistance if you are trained in the skill (In this case deception) give more then a boost?
