The sheaf of papers Tronus has found seem to be Vizeron Dribbage's service record with the Order of Saint Durvin. A quick glance through the pages corroborates the service dates the Dwarf and the others have been given so far. The final paper includes Dribbage's discharge orders. Yet Tronus notices that the missing man's departure wasn't the result of a simple dispute: Instead, Dribbage was fully excommunicated from the Church. Tronus realizes that to understand the full story, he'll need to give the papers a thorough read-through.
OOC:
A full read-through will take about an hour. Y'all should remember that you have been hired by Lady Dribbage, so she will presumably agree to let you borrow items from the study if you need to give them closer scrutiny (including these papers and the magical book).
Barvek thumbs through a few pages of the ledger he found in the locked drawer, but none of it makes much sense. There are no dates given, although there do seem to be entries spaced out from one another. A typical entry reads, "I saw three guests there." Another one says, "Two guests invited me to visit their home." None of it makes much sense without some sort of key.

With the book fallen open at his feet, Mengus is startled and can't seem to recall much about the subjects of the books on Dribbage's shelf. It's a frustrating feeling.
OOC:
That threat will mean Mengus gets a setback on his next check. People are still welcome to try Forbidden or Geography.

"I think I have something but it'll take more time in-depth to read." Tronus states looking up and looking to see what the others are doing.
Aug 26, 2019 5:40 pm
"Nothing." Nera responds, leaving the book reading to the more intellectually inclined among them.
Aug 27, 2019 12:27 am
OOC:
Sounds like Tronus will take the papers for further study. Not sure if Hildar plans to study the magical tome further, but he has possession of it. We're hoping she doesn't notice the broken egg.

We can wrap up this scene once I know what y'all want to do with the ledgers, and whether you want to do any further investigation of the bookshelf or the footprints. There are lots of possible Knowledge checks to be made there, but folks have opted not to do them.
Aug 27, 2019 7:06 am
OOC:
If there is still time (in game) I could keep on staring at those curious footprints... can't remember that roll are left to do, but I'll start with some PC interaction :)
Nekurr grabs the book that fell of the shelf. "This is an interesting creature... Wait! look at these hooves!" I show the open book to anyone who looks at it and point at the footprints on the floor. "What is this thing?"

While Barvek and Tronus consider what to do with the documents they've found, Nekurr gets the attention of Hildar, Nera, and Mengus. The four of them try to identify the creature in the book -- which is somehow related to whatever made these footprints.
OOC:
Since Hildar, Nera, and Mengus are both nearby, let's have any of you make a combined roll for Knowledge (Lore) and Knowledge (Forbidden). The rolls will both be YGGGBB + PP. Two rolls, but one player can roll both if they want. Let's use any Threats on the first roll to add setbacks to the second roll (1 threat = 1 setback).

OOC:
team rolling! not sure about the threats and setbacks :(
OOC:
GM edit: Adding 2 setbacks to the second roll. Oops! Never mind. Ignore the setbacks, as you didn't have any uncanceled threat in the first roll.

Rolls

YGGGBB + PP

2 Success, 4 Advantage, 2 Threat

Total: 2 Success, 2 Advantage

YGGGBB + PP

4 Success, 5 Advantage, 3 Threat

Total: 4 Success, 2 Advantage

2 threats = 2 setbacks to second roll

2 Threat

Total: 2 Threat

OOC:
School started back up this week. I'll try to be involved as I can, but you might hear from me less.
Aug 27, 2019 5:35 pm
OOC:
CESN, you didn't specify which roll was Lore and which one was Forbidden. I'll assume you tried Lore first. Don't forget to include the name of the skill you're rolling! :)

Also, you didn't choose any use for the advantages. I'll give related information by default.
After a bit of back-and-forth discussion, Hildar, Nekurr, Nera, and Mengus can think of a few creatures that have goat hooves but walk on their hindlimbs. As far as the fair races of Terrinoth are concerned, Hildar has heard of certain forest guardians that live in the Aymhelin Forest and are allied with the Elves there. These creatures are sometimes called Fauns, and they have the roughly Human-like torsos with goat-like hindquarters. However, Fauns are exceedingly rare in the Aymhelin, so Hildar can't fathom one being out and about in the Baronies, let alone breaking into a house.

No, it seems more likely that the creature who made the prints (and pictured in the book) must be some sort of dark entity, or at least one created using dark magics. In this realm, Mengus recalls learning in his studies about hybrid creatures created during the Third Darkness. At the time, the forces of the Dragons attacking the fair races performed dark magical experiments to create Human-Dragon hybrids to fight for them. In retaliation, a few wizards of Greyhaven experimented with dark magics to create hybrid creatures of their own. It's not unthinkable that some of those hybrids may have fused Humans with goats or similar creatures.

Nekurr remembers hearing tavern tales of even darker creatures: the demons of the Ynfernael plane. He worries that the perpetrator (and the image) may both be traces of something even more unspeakable than a Human–animal hybrid. Perhaps the visitor was a full-fledged demon.

During the discussion, Nera notices the title of the book that fell to the floor: The Revelations of Saint Durvin. Seeing as how the saint fought in the Third Darkness, the title could lend support to either the hybrid theory or the demon theory.
OOC:
ArMedBeta, thanks for the heads up. I hope you can still post 5 times weekly -- PbP games often die if folks post less. :/

OOC:
Maybe Barvek's mother in law or kid is in town to visit and doesn't understand he has a job and needs to get work done... XD...

OOC:

Nekurr, seeing Hildar and Tronus taking all they want, decides to pack the interesting book about Saint Durvin as well... after all "Big saint man" would be nothing without little clean durvin
OOC:

"We should find out who would put an egg back together too and adorn it..." Tronus states putting the papers away looking a Nera and Nekurr.
Aug 27, 2019 8:33 pm
OOC:
Let me know if there's anything else y'all want to do in the study before reporting to Olarie Dribbage. If ArMedBeta is indeed too busy to post before tomorrow, let's assume Barvek takes both ledgers with him.
Aug 27, 2019 10:56 pm
"I think it's a demon. Got hooves like one, least that's what I heard from stories." Nera nods, believing she is following the correct path for pinning down this creature.

"I can find someone who can help us with that, easy. Good idea Tronus." Nera comments on the egg situation, liking Tronus's line of thinking.
Aug 28, 2019 6:51 am
With a broken dragon egg and a book about saintly revelations, Nekurr has a feeling of accomplishment. "A demon you say? I wonder what a demon would want from an old dwarf that own a haunted graveyard and was expelled from Saint Durvin's...". Nekurr has a final look at the room before leaving.
OOC:
"mmm... interesting, there seems to be a floor under my feet" notices Nekurr ... :p

Also, did anyone "shake" the boring painting? I have a feeling there's a hidden key inside for some reason :D

Rolls

There was a PP floor check that I think we forgot

1 Success, 2 Advantage, 1 Failure, 2 Threat

Aug 28, 2019 8:47 am
After studying the books Hildar turns to the remains of the dragon egg "Shall we see if we can do anything about this" he says as he leans in.
OOC:
Sorry for my absence, has been a notable weekend! Not sure I there's a way of using magic to mend things but that's where Hildar's heads at
Aug 28, 2019 5:24 pm
OOC:
No need to check the floor, CESN! The footprints were the only thing to be discovered there, and folks found them thanks to advantages and triumphs from other checks.

And I was wondering when someone would suggest mending the egg with magic! :P This is somewhere between Conjure and Utility. Conjure doesn't have an option to make a summon permanent, but I feel like an Easy (P) Utility spell is too easy. Let's call it Hard (PPP), Conjure (P) + Medium Summon due to moving parts (P) + Permanent (P). I'll give you two boosts for having the pieces and for having seen the completed object beforehand. So, roll against BBPPP.
Aug 28, 2019 6:13 pm
Hildar pulls his wand out and begins to concentrate on the pieces of the completed egg, fixing the image in his mind of how it was before it got broken.
OOC:
I’ll use the advantage to offset the Strain of Casting the spell if that’s ok

Rolls

Arcana (Conjure)

5 Success, 3 Advantage, 4 Failure, 1 Threat

Total: 1 Success, 2 Advantage

Missing boost

Aug 28, 2019 7:19 pm
OOC:
Just reread the long description of Augment, and apparently that's used to repair items. Oh well. Difficulty would have been roughly the same. :)
The pieces of the broken egg swirl about as if picked up by a miniature cyclone. They reassemble themselves into their original shape, and the cracks and seams glow slightly before disappearing. Suddenly, Hildar finds himself with a rebuilt egg in a dustpan.

Once the egg is restored to its original perch, you all exit the study, a few of you carrying tomes or papers for later study. Lady Dribbage hears your footsteps in the drawing room and joins you there. "Oh, it's getting late," she says. Indeed, sunset is probably less than an hour away. "Any idea yet where my uncle might be? I hope you found something useful in that old place."
OOC:
If anyone is going to attempt to hide something from Olarie Dribbage (like a book or document), I'll need a Stealth check versus RP (I'll upgrade the diffuculty with a Story Point). Note that this varies slightly from RAW, as the game prefers to let the searching party make the check. I prefer to let players do the rolling whenever possible, though.
