Episode 4: The Cult of Kaliya-te

Ybus pats out the flames on his sleeve, wincing at the pain from both fire and worm. "Last time I had a 'worm' with a burning sensation, it was after spending the night stuck inside a blizzard with a sheep herder," he chortles, "It got so cold I had to pee into the wind to warm up!

"It looked like this!"
He mimes leaning back and grabbing his trousers, channeling his arcane power into a stream of glittering divine radiance that arcs into the sky before cascading like fire upon the swarm of maggots.

Baracus chooses the Chosen (16 slashing+ 8 bludgeoning). The poison cloud dissipates as the half-orc's axe nearly decapitates the kalding abomination!

The unflappable Ybus rains death on the death maggots (failed DEX save. 12 radiant damage. Swarm is now dead) Now, only those maggots still feasting on living flesh (like the two inside Erden) remain.

Though surrounded by foes, the Chosen focuses all its malice on Apo Tagipusuon. The aged tikbalang kicks feebly as the monster begins to drain her life force. (Level 4 Vampiric Touch. 12 necrotic. Chosen gains 6 hp.)

Erden quaffs the rich, red potion, finally killing the deadly maggots inside him.

The surviving members of the tikbalang warband rally around their leaders, but then the Chosen raises its staff, sending waves of dark death washing over the warriors! (Circle of Death. 8d6 necrotic, DC 15 CON save for half.) With anguished wails, many of the tikbalang warriors crumble to dust... including Buluyagon, that wise-cracking, rice-wine guzzling, cigar-smoking, tattooed sonuva mare.

Makabo and Makisig do not falter. They fight desperately now to save Apo Tagipusuon. The weakening babaylan does not falter, either. Though still unable to escape the Chosen's foul grip, she speaks a word of blessing on the warriors she can see. (Bless on Baracus, Erden, Makabo, and Makisig)

Ybus reduces the Chosen's legs to bloody stumps. Then, with his father's axe, Baracus decapitates the abomination, sending its hideous, horned head flying in a fountain of dark ichor.

Apo Tagipusuon, herself near death, cannot spare any of her energy to perform healing for the wounded. But she does ensure that Erden is stable before seeing to the difficult task of cleansing this place of kalding defilement.

Makabo and Makisig and the handful of tikbalang survivors tend to their wounded as best they can. To the north, tikbalang victory gongs signal the end of the cult of Kaliya-te.

The day is won! What do you do?
Feb 24, 2020 11:29 pm
Baracus paintings orcish runes with the Chosen's blood upon the ground where he slew him. He paints them on himself as well. So absorbed in his task that he notices almost nothing else going on around him. By the end, runes radiate out from the spot where the Chosen died, and Baracus's torso and face are covered in brutal, red calligraphy.
Feb 24, 2020 11:58 pm
"Medic!" hails Ybus as he slides to Erden's slide and plants a wet, sloppy kiss full on the lips. "Wake up, Sleeping Beauty!"

Not seeing any immediate reaction, Ybus sighs. "I'm so sorry, I forgot mouthwash," he admits. He pops the stopper on a vial of healing liquid, tips the contents into his cheeks and gargles before bending over Erden and applying mouth-to-mouth, then pinching Erden's nose to force the gnome to swallow.

Erden's eyes flutter open and he realizes what Ybus is doing and nearly vomits, "Oh gods! What in the hell are you doing!?"

He shakes his head, not overly surprised, and climbs shakily to his feet to look over the battlefield and feels a huge weight sink down into his stomach to see how many Tikbalang are dead. He begins stumbling his way over to Apo Tagipusuon to see if there's anything he can do to help.
Feb 25, 2020 9:12 am
Baracus finds his friends afterward, moving slowly and awkwardly, but he holds his head up high and his voice is steady. He gestures to the field of battle:

"Just wait until we tell Rydler and Urban about this one."

Dawn finally breaks, painting the Bimari mountainside pink and gold. It's glorious! On the slopes below, tikbalang voices are raised in victory chants and ululating war cries. The battle is won, but at a huge cost -- the dead are without number.

Apo Tagipusuon groans under the strain of the cleansing ritual she is performing. The taint is strong, and she is weak, so very weak! It takes the better part of the morning before she declares it's safe enough to leave the site and return to the village. It will take several days and much work to fully cleanse the site. For now, it is time to begin funeral rites for Buluyagon, Lingkon-hok, and the rest of the fallen.
Quote:
Climbing the stepped rice paddies you come across a curious sight: the ritual cleansing of the remains of several tikbalang warriors who fell to kalding weapons.

"We tikbalang celebrate all the phases of life. Yes, even death, which is simply a prelude to rebirth. When a tikbalang warrior dies, even the least among us, they are placed on a wooden throne in a place of honor. The body is blindfolded and arrayed for war. About the neck is placed a garland made of the rarest blossoms, and the mummified heads of slain enemies. For eight days and nights the warrior's deeds are chanted amid feasting and strong, rice wine. On the ninth day the body is placed in a wooden coffin suspended from the sacred cliff so the dead may join the sky-gods." Buluyagon suddenly grabs Ybus' arm and implores all of you, "Promise me, if I should fall tomorrow, burn me. Don't let that maggot thing eat me!"
In the village, The PHULES are reunited and honored by the tikbalang. Many tales are told of the days' exploits. There is feasting to celebrate the hard-won victory. Songs of thanksgiving are sung to the sky-gods and the ancestors. There is also serious talk, in the wee hours, with Apo Mai'ngor and the other elders squatting around fires that have burned low, about the connection between the rat cult and the goat cult. What might it mean that these portals are being raised all over the world (as seen by Urban and Rydler)? What lies beyond, and what dark power that lurks there?
Feb 25, 2020 3:55 pm
"Make sure you don't leave out all the gory details," says Ybus, showing his arm. "See, the little maggot-hole looks like a butt!"
Feb 26, 2020 3:02 am
Baracus is enjoying the attention of having slain the Chosen, and of being in a tribal culture again. No gold in anyone's veins, no crowds of strangers, no sewer streams in cobbled streets. The food is fresh and drink is potent.

He enjoys learning the fighting techniques of the tikbalang, and share his own techniques that are a mix Qing'lai and Orcish traditions. He compares weapons and tactics and battlecries and battle scars.

He also shares the story of his father and his quest to become worthy to join him on the endless fields of battle on the plane of Acheron. Likewise, he listens to the tikbalang stories and songs, and tries to learn their language, much to the laughter of everyone.
Feb 28, 2020 4:03 pm
The PHULEs stay with the tikbalang tribe for eight days and nights to participate in the funeral rites, as well as assist in the cleansing ritual around the portal area. Finally, you are ready to bid Bimar farewell. The horse-men say you are welcome to visit them any time.

Where do you go from here?
Feb 29, 2020 2:48 am
"Pradesh"

The PHULES were discussing their next move, and Baracus had a direction in mind. He tied his topknot as he explained his proposal.

"The First Sword has been my stalwart companion, and now it is time for it to return home. The leaders of the Thousand Swords will appreciate its return."

"That's right!" declares Ybus, pointing his finger to the sky. "Time to take BA's betrothed home to papa!"

He whispers to Erden, "That's what he meant, right? I hadn't been paying attention."
