The case book snaps shut as Bruv closes it and lays it down, "Do ya... need ta 'ear our rates first? Or, if'n ya know you're ready ta move forward... Let's staht wit 'hoo dey are - description an oll 'at, and the last place the missing person was known ta be seen, and when?"

My inability to read strikes again!
Nera emerges, shooting a semi irritated, semi joking look at Nekurr. "You are not to accompany me on any sneaking luck-boy."

The Elf squints at Bruv like she's trying to figure him out. "I'll pay you, of course. I did my research. You lot are known for results." She sighs and slumps a bit in the chair. "But, sure. Let's get down to it. So, this all started when I was doing the Baron's books for the year: logs of tax payments for the different towns and villages of the barony. Well, you can imagine my surprise when I found out that one village, some place called Buzzards' Ford, hadn't payed taxes in fifteen years!" She slaps her palm on the table to underscore the point. "Well, I've been head bookkeeper for ten years, so even if five of those aren't my fault, the last ten are. I realized I needed to rectify the situation, and fast. So I sent a guy called Kelis Isle to this Buzzards' Ford to get the back taxes owed. That was over a month ago, so I'm a bit... worried about the money. It's quite a lot." She trails off for a moment.

"Tronus Granitebreaker Miss... was there someone in Buzzards' Ford Mister Isle should have made contact with? Also what are the chances of seeing the ledger book?" Tronus states with a frown having put down his shield.

She's been doing this for ten years and just noticed? Tronus ponders already seeing flags looking to the others.

He also tries to recall the place since it sounds unique.

"That's just itโ€”no one seems to have heard of the place. I just told Isle to get the taxes owed. No idea if that meant he had to talk to the local sheriff, headman, mayor, or someone else. As for the ledgerโ€”" She sits up straighter. "I'm happy to share it, but I need to know you'll take the case first. So will you? I'll let you keep half of the taxes collected. That's 325. Gold."

You know that Lady Argus would get half of that, leaving the rest of you with 325 silver each. Of course, the bookkeeper might be open to negotiation over the fee.
OOC:
Knowing anything about Buzzards' Ford requires a Formidable (PPPPP) Knowledge (Geography) check with a boost for it being in the same barony. You would know that your chances to find out about it would be greater in the Nornholt library, of course.

Negotiating with her for a higher fee gets two boosts (since she wants the case taken), but will be versus RR.

OOC:
I'll take the neogition but would like to use a story point so I'd be yygbbrr. Need to edit with a point for the RP.
"That's a sizable amount. Granted it's a lot of unknowns, for what's happened to Isle, the nature and history of this place and how they've stayed under suspicion for over a decade, also if they dont have the money to pay."

OOC:
Another PC can add unskilled assistance if they wish (rolling one more boost). Please indicate how you're helping IC, though. I'll pause to let others catch up and for Remnant to suggest something for that 3 Advantage.

OOC:
Maybe some unrelated boons to assist.

Nekurr looks at the elf, doubting this story of missing villages and checking his pockets for his coins. "So you're telling me that that is a village no one knows about that hasn't paid taxes for 15 years? How is it even in the ledger if no one knows about it?" the cleric then add to Nera's comment "Well, this looks not just about find a person, but mostly about finding a place, right?"
OOC:
Not buying the missing place story... can I try a new vigilance given the new info?
I'd use the boosts to get her to offer access to some relevant and restricted place that can give us either bonuses later or information now

OOC:
Remember to propose uses for the advantages and triumphs you roll. That'll keep things rolling along. In the cases above, I'll make best guesses so we don't hold up the story.
"Well, somebody knew about Buzzards' Ford fifteen years ago. That's why they're in the ledger. And there are enough townships and villages in this barony that no one can have heard of them all, I suppose. In this case, it was really just luck. We moved to a new office over at the castle, and I found the book behind a shelf when we moved it." She blushes with this admission, as if embarrassed by it. "I know it's a lot of unknowns. I know it sounds forbidding that Kelis Isle never came back. But... OK, I can bump up your fee by ten percent, but that's all I can do. Really! The gold I give you I have to replace from my own savings so that the full tax amount goes into the treasury." She sighs. "Look, if it'll make things easier, I can give you an official writ from the treasury, deputizing you to collect these taxes in the Baron's name."
OOC:
2 successes bumps up the offered amount 10%, and the advantages get you the writ, which'll offer social boons once in the town.

"...Your biggest lead for a mystery village is a witness from years ago? Should mention we have a minimum fee."
Jan 7, 2020 1:51 pm
Hildar steps into the room fully seeming to have something occur to him "Given the limited information the settlement is most likely somewhere around the Blackwing Swamp area I would surmise. Some of the fauna in that area are know for a number of interesting properties"
Jan 7, 2020 4:08 pm
"Ms. Vintoloness... Gimme a moment ta confer wit moi mates, please.", Bruv moves to circle up with the others.

"Oi don't like 'is... Fer one, it sounds more an' more loike 'is is two jobs an' we're only gettin' paid for one.... One job ta foind da missing person. One ta recover da missing taxes... No guarantee dere in da same place or 'ave da same problem... An' it certainly seems as if our cloient is more concerned abou' one den da odder, moight Oi add...

Foinding people is paht of what we do, normally. Great. 'appy ta work for ya.

Recouping taxes is not... Seems 'ere we'd be no longer acting as private investigators... An' instead, acting as official representatives of da Baron.

Wit dat, Oi don't know 'at Lady Ahgus wants 'is action - tax collecting - associated with her organization...

Also, it seems 'is carries an' exposes us to certain loiabilities far beyond our normal role in soch matters... Da writ sounds loike a reasonable protection dere. Bot it could also put a big tahget on our backs. Oi tink our ability to exercoise discretion is limited... Oi, at least, won't be a paht of a cover op if'n it turns out sumpin' foul is goin' on 'ere at da hands of da Baron... An Oi ain't gonna act as some special operative, in some foight between da Baron and a village, if 'is is a bunch of rebels...

So, if we're being hoired to found a missing person, great. We foind 'im, whether da taxes are dere or not, we git our pay on 'at. Oi tink we need ta make 'at clear... If da taxes are dere, da Tax Collector can finish is job an bring 'em back.

Or, if we are ta troi ta extract money from citizens... Oi need more pay. 'at's not moi job.
Jan 7, 2020 9:12 pm
"This would mean we get paid more, therefore I like it. This whole 'hidden' village could be a fence, or a farce entirely. This witness is likely not even around, or possibly alive."
Jan 7, 2020 10:31 pm
"Mostly, Oi just want to manage expectations... The scope of what exactly is being expected of us 'ere seems to be expanding. Yea?

We'll foind da missing guy..

If 'e 'as da taxes - or da bandits 'hoo nabbed 'im do, great. We'll 'elp bring it oll back safe.

If 'e don't 'ave 'em, but wants to go gather them, great. We'll 'elp bring it oll back safe.

If 'e don't 'ave 'em, an' wants US to go gather them with 'im? Nope. Not without more pay...

We don't foind 'im? Oi ain't going ta people's 'omes to collect... Not without A LOT more pay...

Am Oi off-base 'ere?

OOC:
Loving the deliberations. Do note that the award being offered is already about 75% more than you got for the last job (about 360 silver each, versus 200 last time), albeit this one requires travel.

Nekurr consider Bruv's point but ends up agreeing with Nera "She's right, the village is probably not there any more and the tax collector probably meet some unfortunate end in the swamp. Anyway, if the village is still there, it looks like a good way to spread the faith.". The cleric then turns back to Rathin "Fortuna seems to be with you, good lady. However, it is not our job to cover up for the Barony, so if something strange comes how about this Kelis Isle... we may need to report it to Lady Argus. We're finding this missing book and the tax collector story a bit dodgy. What is your relation to him by the way?"
Jan 8, 2020 2:14 pm
"If we find Isle that's on us for being concerned about a civil servant no one pays this much gold to find someone of his stature. We don't know much about this place and that seems to be the norm, where's the money and getting it is the job, the why it hasn't been paid is really a nicety to let them know. For the most part we don't know until we get there on a lot of things." he states to the others.

Listening to Nekurr he shakes his head and sighs his moustache twitching.

"I'll ready the cart and look at sundries we'll be needing, if people have further questions or want further pay I'll have no part of it and take the job as is. If people don't want to take the job they don't have to get on the cart." he states aloud hoisting his shield and moves to leave.
