"'Ow's the tax work? Maybe they 'ad a precipitous increase in income... But whateva brought da windfall, brought 'eir downfall?

Or maybe it's some sorta money scheme...? Baron found out sumpin's goin' on down 'ere, demands more and more 'til 'ey've 'ad enough and... what?
", he shrugs, " Maybe 'ey got a little leverage of 'eir own ta push back? Got da taxes ta 'go away'? Maybe 'ey pushed too 'ard and got woiped out by 'im?", he shrugs again.

" Whateva it is, sounds loik sumpin' 'at one party or another woulda loiked ta stay forgotten..."

After studying the maps, you conclude that there are likely two ways you could approach Buzzards’ Ford. The first would be to head southeast on the main road toward Tamalir until you reach the Flametail River. The village map indicates that the main entrance is only reachable by taking a ferry across the Flametail, which means you’ll need to somehow cross to the south bank of the river, make your way west, and then take the Buzzards' Ford ferry at the village entrance entrance a short ways into the swamp. This approach is the most straightforward, and should be achievable in four days in your horse cart.

The second approach would be to head southeast to the crossroads shown on the area map, known as Cailn Crossroads. From there, you could take footpaths due south—Hildar recalls reading about these in his studies—until you reach the edge of the Blackwing Swamp from the north. The smaller map seems to show a tributary of the Flametail River flowing southeast through Buzzards’ Ford. Assuming you could find water transport—perhaps with one of the Lizardfolk tribes if you could establish friendly relations— you could come into the town from this direction, saving potentially two days’ worth of travel and gaining the element of surprise on the villagers. However, that might also cause problems, especially if they’re as jumpy as you’ve heard they might be. Presumably, they don’t get along with the Lizardfolk.

In sum, you can take the tried-and-true approach and arrive in four days by horse cart, traversing the river in two places to do so. Or you can take your chances with either a swamp guide or the Lizardfolk and try to reach the village by river from the north. This latter approach would shave a day of travel time off and give you the element of surprise, but it might present difficulties due to your horse cart.

Either way, the Cailn Crossroads is on the route either way, and Tronus happens to know a guild mate there named Gilga Oakenwheel who might be able to care for your horse or set you up with a swamp guide if you’d like—for the right price, of course.
OOC:
OK, so lizard folk guides are not off the table, but you wouldn’t know about their attitudes until you made it to the swamp. The 3 advantage are for the contact at the crossroads; hope that’s OK and in the spirit of what you were suggesting.

OOC:
I for one am in favor of meeting some lizard folk.

OOC:
As a player, I'd agree with somebox... but Nekurr is more of a tried-and-true not worth the risk kind of guy, so my vote goes to the nice 4 days walk around the village with swimming opportunities :D

Hildar has no preference on the matter and would be willing to go with the consensus

"Lets go in through the back, we'll get a better assessment of what may be going on. Especially if the roads are good and well maintained."

Remnant says:
"Lets go in through the back, we'll get a better assessment of what may be going on. Especially if the roads are good and well maintained."
OOC:
Just to clarify: You would expect there to be no roads through the back -- From what you gather, there are nothing but footpaths to the swamp, then river travel after that.

OOC:
Would we be able to see a road between Tamaril and BF? If that road is decent and well maintained it's a tell tale sign to a merchant of an improved infrastructure for trade/resource acquisitions.

OOC:
Yeah, on this map, you can see how the Tamalir road parallels the river for a ways and then heads northward. You'd expect that you'd only have lesser-used dirt tracks west of that curve in the main road. All of this is just what you can glean from these two maps, so you're absolutely right: If there are well-used roads leading into the swamp from either north or east, that's a sign of more (and perhaps illicit) traffic in and out.

OOC:
I vote by the road. Bruv is a by the book kind of guy, in this regard. Sneaking in through the swamp would make it look like we have something to hide, when we're there for lawful, rightful reasons

Which I think means there is no consensus, and Hildar is thereby the decider in chief.

Little hand wavy. Go by road unless it looks fubar then find out more about the situation so we don't get caught up in an ambush or prison.
"Since we can't come to an agreement lets go by road, if the fork to Buzzard's Ford is in disrepair going upfront and explaining things and who we're looking for works, if we see heads on pikes or a well maintained road that could make military troop movements easier maybe we rethink the upfront approach and see what we can gleam from people in Tamalir and/or Lizardfolk since they're less likely to be aggressive at nonlocals and have a better handle possibly on the situation."

Early the next morning, you all mount up in the horse cart with provisions enough to last two weeks, fodder for the pair of horses, bedrolls for all of you, flint and tinder, and enough tents to sleep your group. The trip southeast is uneventful. You spend your first night in tents, but before the second night falls, you arrive at Cailn Crossroads.
[ +- ] Cailn's Crossroads Inn
The area isn't so much a village as it is a building: A single inn sits near the crossroads with a handful of horses tethered up in stables nearby. You know that this is where Tronus's guild mate, Gilga Oakenwheel, is supposed to live, or at least frequent. Tronus knows that she can fill in some of the blanks about what an off-road, northern approach to the swamp would entail, but she's not one to talk without something in return.

It's a good place to stop for the night one way or another.
OOC:
Let me know if you want to chat up Gilga or just continue south in the morning.
Jan 28, 2020 8:39 pm
"Get your fill and don't drink too much weary eyes make easy marks on the road... I've an associate to catch up with..." Tronus states with a nod before looking around for Gilga.
Jan 29, 2020 2:01 am
The tavern is full with travelers, but Gilga's not difficult to find. Tronus knows that the raven-haired Dwarf keeps a quiet table to herself in the corner. She's there, sorting tarot cards while keeping an eye on who comes and goes in the Cailn Crossroads Inn. As Tronus approaches her, she looks up at him. "I thought you'd show your face one of these days. Cut the deck."
OOC:
As many of you who want to be talking to her should join in. Nera (or anyone) is free to try Streetwise or Charm to chat folks up. We won't role-play out interactions too extensively, but don't feel you have to sit on your thumbs while Tronus talks to Gilga. :)
Jan 29, 2020 1:55 pm
"Lady Oakenwheel." Tronus states with a nod and sits down while doing as instructed.

"Merchant clans always follow the money... and there's always money to follow. Wondering if you could tell me about a place though." Tronus says matter of factly before asking her about her insights.
OOC:
I'm waiting for Nekurr to take bets on if Tronus and Gilga have 'history'... XD
Jan 29, 2020 2:34 pm
OOC:
Yes, I wondered if Nekurr might take interest in this scene! :D
"What—no reading?" she says, tapping the deck with a finger. "Pity. You used to have such a curious spirit. Now what is this place you mention?"
Jan 29, 2020 2:49 pm
Tronus slides the top card off the deck off and places the deck on top of it.

"One of the junior associates with the company gives me headaches with anything remotely related to gambling." Tronus admits with a sigh and a tired frown.

Buzzard's Ford west of here... he states running a hand through his moustache.
Jan 29, 2020 3:39 pm
Bruv kind of hovers next to the table, looking upon the tarot cards with equal parts interest and disdain. He also scopes out the other types of characters in the inn.
