Its cool was just curious on that one - currently you have to touch someone that knows the language to speak the language -- but I suppose if you are doing lip reading you would just need a means to perceive the words clearly and/or some such but that will be an in-game endeavor I suppose. Are we outlining what it might take to create your own spell as opposed to using spells others have already created? Just curious again.
Helios busied himself with looking around at things while himself appearing inconspicuous to the point of being inconsequential and thus easily ignored or overlooked. He was confident in Missy's ability to handle people.

Missy stepped into the small office, with Helios quietly behind. They seemed to have intruded on a private argument, as could be seen from the expressions on the two person's faces. What was easy to conclude was that they were husband and wife, the Chans, from the almost familiar way they fought and stood in relation to each other.

"Yes, what you want?" The woman asked the question straight out, as Hongkongers do, without beating round the bush.
OOC:
Replying to @dejoker's thoughts: I believe the current spells cover Increase Skill or Increase Attribute, both of which will help Perception. Then it's a simple matter of the Translate spell.

With a respectful bow of the head Missy apologise for the interruption of their discussion, then: An exchange of services Miss Chan, that is what I want. We offer the services of two mages, in exchange for transport to New-Tokyo
OOC:

First Impression: You gain 2 Edge for Social Tests during your first meeting with anyone, and both your Heat and Reputation are ignored for this first encounter.

Mentor spirit: Edge Boosts cost 1 less for Influence tests

3 -edge boost: Buy one automatic hit: You get an automatic hit. This one adds on to the total hits you roll. This isn’t an automatic success at whatever test you’re attempting, just another hit to add to your total.

For my 2 Edge and with a one boost discount, I would like to buy one automatic hit. I don't know if its a clever use of my edge, but I am using the system

4 +1 succes

Rolls

Influence (one auto hit) - (9d6)

(421451655) = 33

Helios hears the word New-Tokoyo and states quietly to Missy in Sperethiel "Makurazaki would probably be better less scrutiny, easier for them, and I have contacts near there."

Smoothly Missys adds to miss Chen. ...We have business in Makurazaki, but don't need to inconvenience you more than necessary. You were recommended and praised for your discretion by Antient Mai

OOC:
Missy's Influence test has 3 net successes.
Both persons scrutinised Missy and Helios very carefully. "You're a strange pair." The woman finally spoke. "It's a long trip, many weeks. Japan is a regular stop for our trading boats, so the trip will not be out of the ordinary."

"But first, one important question." This time it was Mr Chan who spoke, also in Cantonese. "Any immediate danger? Can't have trouble following us right behind."

Rolls

Willpower + Intuition (vs Missy's Influence) - (7d6)

(3414615) = 24

No Immediate danger. We are not traveling away from something, we are traveling to.

OOC:
3? My first thought was 3, but then I looked it up, 1's don't negate 5's or 6'es any more. The only time 1's are important, is if half the roll is 1's, then its a glitch. Critical if there are no 5's or 6'es. But I might have missed something

OOC:
You rolled 4+1 successes, that is opposed by my roll of 2 successes for the Chans. So that's 5 - 2 = 3 net successes. :) Which is why their response is positive, with only one question of concern which was more for self-preservation.
"1000 nuyen each." Mrs Chan interjected. "Pay off port authorities both sides, fake licence for two fishermen.

"Also, need to do small magic to erase trace of your presence here. You two don't look like you have much Matrix trail. Otherwise we'll need to wipe that too." Mr Chan added. They both sounded like this was not the first time they smuggled people out of countries.

OOC:
How about we just appear on a boat once its at sea and disappear before it docks, we'd just need to know the boat and its location and when it is leaving the dock, and then while at sea we not only help the boat travel faster but collect a high quality catch... These concepts I believe Helios would have discussed with Missy

Lastly from my understanding unless we cast magic which for Missy lasts 1 hour/Force and mine half that at the point where we cast it -- we do not leave any significant astral trace behind ??

We are freshly cleaned astral wise.
Missy takes out her silver credstick and press a button, frowns and gives it to Helios. The desplay reads ¥978

OOC:
Having worked a few times together in the past Missy would know that Helios and make them both completely Invisible -- which is what he means when he says very discretely
Helios looks at the Cred Stick questioningly and then asks softly in Sperethiel, "Are we paying for something? The last time I did this I was able to negotiate working passage. It is not like we are just requesting a ride, we win by getting where we want to go, they win by bringing in a prize catch. Is there something else in this mix I am not aware of, I mean we are not asking to be smuggled in just transported in a less conspicuous manner. If we need to we can very discretely board just about any vessel headed out, for that matter we could buy or commandeer a junk and sail it ourselves although that ourselves part I would rather not do as I am not much of a sailor so-to-speak but between the two of us I am sure we could get it done if it becomes necessary."

Missy nods to Helios and with a smile responds in Sperethiel: I kind of like the idea of sailing our self
Honored Chen's. We will each pay ¥200 to cover what we eat. We will speak and work with the spirits during the voyage. We will not be seen by port authorities. We are not a danger to your ship or your crew.
Missy focuses on Mr Chen, who seems to be the submissive in their relationship.
If this is unacceptable, I will inform Ancient Mai that we were forced to go with plan-b

Mrs Chan seemed more open to negotiation at the Missy's mention Ancient Mai again. While she paused, Mr Chan replied, "You mages? Hmm, you make sure no one follow or trace. If you can make invisible, you will board the boat when we are ready to leave, and hide when you are required. As for work, hmm..."

"500 nuyen each." Mrs Chan spoke up again, the more calculative of the two. It was clear who held the purse strings in the relationship and the business. "You pay 500 now. If you work good, we waive the other half. Make good weather, more fish to catch, make boat safe. Deal?"

Missy looks at Helios. Agreeable?
Feb 21, 2020 8:30 am
Helios looks at Missy and says in Sperethiel: "What?"
Feb 21, 2020 11:07 am
Oh sorry about that. Missy relays the conversation she has had in mandarin with the Chen's into Sperethiel to Helios
Feb 21, 2020 5:11 pm
Helios listens to Missy then replies in Sperethiel: "Let me get this straight. They want us to pay them 500 nuyen a piece to work for them and help them make more money than they could otherwise." He shakes his head no, "That just does not make sense. I mean they would have to pay probably ten times that to higher a single mage for a single hour without any guarantees of increased profits and we are offering them two mages for free for the entire trip just to hitch a ride on a boat for free heading to Japan. That means they will increase profits even if we did only minimal effort along the way. I think they are totally misunderstanding things or just trying to fleece you. This is not some criminal enterprise, we are not wanting to be smuggled nor are we smuggling anything ourselves. We are just trying to travel from here to Japan via boat trading work for passage. These folks are either insane or just believe in looking a gift horse in the mouth. Further that is more than you have on the cred stick. Personally I would say no and go find someone intelligent that understands the value of a good trade deal but ultimately it is your call, and frankly you know how to deal with people better than I do, I just think that not only are they trying to take you to the cleaners but also thoroughly bleach you in the process. We are not really desperate, as not only can we but we will get to Japan with or without their aide. So it ends up being their loss not ours. However, perhaps if they are concerned about paperwork and such, you might suggest that they put us on the books as mages for hire and then just do not pay us. That way they can use that to launder some money they might not have been able to do so otherwise as they are obviously crooks." Helios gives Missy a smile and a shrug. "Again your call, I am just sharing my thoughts."

OOC:
If you like we can handwave the 'translation' part of this negotiation, so @runekydig doesn't have to repetitively paraphrase whatever the Chans say to Helios. Let's just assume Missy automatically does so. Of course Helios and Missy can continue to speak Sperethiel if they don't want the Chans to understand (asuming the Chans don't understand ;) )
Feb 22, 2020 6:50 pm
I liked your plan with our own boat better anyway. she says to Helios. To the Chens, she says: Plan-b it is then. She turns and start to walk out
Feb 23, 2020 6:54 am
OOC:
A quick Missy relates the conversation is fine by me which I believe is what she did as that makes it more linear and I can then responded accordingly. And we are speaking in Sperethiel because currently that is the only language Helios understands unless he borrows one of Missy's languages which he does not currently feel is necessary. Maybe she will get slightly annoyed with Helios not knowing any other languages and make it a priority of her's to teach him the ones she knows. Or maybe she is fine with him not knowing other languages since he does know how to speak and deal with animals really well. To me its all about character development and character interaction and relationship development. We have a bond due to the mutual need and respect for one another but we do run in the shadows where trust is often rare and sometimes dangerous. So it is hard for me to say why Missy thus far has not chosen to instruct Helios on how to speak another language and I am fine with the other player defining that for their character and letting it come out in role play :)
As Missy turns to leave Helios gives a slight friendly smile and a little wave to the Chens before turning to follow her but was prepared to stop. He had seen her negotiate before and sometimes leaving seemed to be part of the deal making processes which was totally contrary to how you dealt with an animal.
