[IC] Death & Taxes (Session 4)

[ +- ] Manor Floorplan
Leaving the festival grounds takes a bit longer than anyone would like, as Wayland glad-hands with the villagers like a country priest after a sermon. He insists on escorting you back to his house, though, so you wait around, help put things away as you can, chat with various locals who seem both drunk and drowsy, and watch the place clear out. Finally, Wayland smiles at you and motions you over.

"Let's get back to the house and get some shuteye, what do you say?" The walk back to the manor is pleasant enough. Wayland obviously knows the village like the back of his hand, so he leads you at a steady but comfortable clip back to the house. As you get closer, you notice the glow of the fire inside. Hildar and Nekurr especially can't help but think of snuggling into a cozy bed...

The mayor dismisses the guards sitting outside, thanking them for "keeping his guests safe," but he says with him and his brother there, they can go home to their families. "Don't forget to burn your buzzards, now," he calls out, "so Nature's Lady'll send you good dreams!"

Nera greets her companions inside, and it quickly becomes apparent from the snoring that Tronus is sleeping outside at the stables. The mayor curses then smiles, and heads out to try to rouse the Dwarf to make sure he can get in to a warm bed. He ensures that you all have linens and clean water in the basins—it appears that Rupert Wayland has made sure of it—and then he leaves you upstairs. As he starts down the staircase, he stops and says, "Oh, don't let me forget. We'll get you what we can of those taxes first thing in the morning. Even if your boy ran off, Buzzard's Ford pays its debts." Then he says good night.
OOC:
OK, so I didn't want to belabor returning to the house. But a few things:

1) Presumably, you could have asked the mayor some questions on the way back. If you think you would have, what would you have asked? I can pepper in his answers.

2) This might be a good chance to apprise one another of various things your characters noticed or surmised during the feast or afterward. I put a bunch of stuff in private notes, and I'm not sure you've all shared that information with one another yet.

3) Remnant, feel free to have Tronus join the others in the house if you want to be part of this information swap. If not, Tronus can be assumed to still be snoring outside.

4) Those of you in the manor are upstairs, either in one of the rooms in section J9 or on the balcony outside those rooms, overlooking the study.

OOC:
I guess Nekurr is to tired to ask questions about anything tonight. I guess we should keep an eye on the house in case someone "sleep walks", but with a Tronus snoring outside and Nekurr and Hildar sleeping, that may have to be something between Nera and Bruv ;)
Aug 19, 2020 11:54 am
OOC:
Tronus isn't actually sleeping that was just an excuse to say he didn't see Nera do anything or leave.
Aug 19, 2020 10:55 pm
When everyone returns Nera will look at them with a half-bored stare, lounging on a seat in the living room like a queen living in decadence. She of course will head upstairs at the mayor's request, wanting the man to leave.
OOC:
I was planning on sharing everything in the spoilers to ensure I didn't leave out anything of significance, but I will first see if everyone will hear it, and @savagebob if it's fine to do so.

The good thing about being up here on the second floor is that you get a view of what's going on over most of the bottom floor. You can see Mayor Wayland descend the stairs and head into the living room for a moment. He lights the buzzard effigy there, then circles back to a room you can't see, but which you all know from previous experience is his master bedroom. The door closes.

With the fire crackling in the hearth, you assume you're safe to talk openly, as long as you keep your voices down. The smell of the burning effigy wafts up. It smells vaguely like cinnamon.
OOC:
So if any questions for the mayor occur to you who walked back with him, let me know. Nekurr and Hildar are sleepy, but what you ate isn't like a knock-out agent; more like drowsy cough medicine. (In other words, no need to roleplay it like you're asleep. I actually think it'll be helpful for you all to share your takeaways from the feast before you do anything else. And unless the plan's to just go to bed, this is your chance to brainstorm next steps.)

Also, remember that the effigies have pipeweed in them to bring good dreams.

Also also, enough time has passed that you're all back to full Strain.

OOC:
I've posted it on the previous session :(
so I'll wait to see what the others will say before we move to the next steps

OOC:
Do you mind posting it in your own words (or Nekurr's)? (This is also a GM tool so I can tell whether hints I think I've given actually may not have resonated the way I'd intended!)

Nera explains her outing now that everyone's gathered. "First: Wayland and the Weaver don't get along, that's what the 'guards' think anyway. They also are very intimidated of my prowess, rightfully so. More importantly: Anzul-Anza-Anzilla whatever wasn't home. She had one of those effigies burning, but either she's got a trapdoor or was able to slip away. Isn't be too hard anyway, militia here wouldn't last if those lizardfolk decided to invade."
Aug 21, 2020 7:05 am
"What? The pig lady is gone?" Nekurr asks Nera a bit confused about what happened. "Is she the mayor's sister or something?" the half-cat drops on the nearest bed and goes silent. Then he shakes out of his sleep, looking around scared as he tries to maintain his balance "You know, that Sad priestess? The one that founded the village and ran into the swamp?" Though he may not be making much sense, those that hear the pageant can tell he is talking about Sanden, the pristess of Aris. "A bit weird, she came back raising dead and making miracles. I mean, she met the lady bird in lizardland or what?". Nekuur asks probably very seriously, though he could also be just very high. Difficult to tell from his expression.

"I mean, the mayor descends from this Sad priestess. Why was she so sad? That they didn't say! Hmm, maybe because the pig lady is the one that knows about spiders?". He stares straight into Hildar's eyes "What's this deal with birds and spiders? It makes no sense". He goes really quiet, as if considering the potential ramifications of his question, until he wakes up from his own snoring a few moments later.

"What's up with those two? Maybe they are secret lovers?" he turns to Nera "We must find her, I think she ate the tax man. Wait! Is she going to eat the little girl tonight?" he gasps in horror at his next thought "or her candied fruits?" and with that he collapses on the bed.

Hildar stifles a yawn before speaking "Does anyone else find it a tad on point that one of our main suspicious characters here is a weaver who is most likely at least allied with a spider cult? Anyway, I digress - the 'birds and spiders' as you put it Nekurr are related to that pair of Zanagan gods the book I, erm, liberated from the mayors house, Harridan and Arachne. From what I recall their clergies work in secret, even working openly in an isolated village like this would be extremely unusual for them." he ponders matters for a moment before shaking himself and continuing "During the recital I recalled a little piece of information, legend has it that at the end of the third darkness the leader of the dragon forces died in the skies over this swamp and fell somewhere out there. I don't ever recall reading anything about the body being found.

One other thing that seemed odd. The judges at the pagent, other than Erfan Eswyse seemed fine, not sleepy like the rest of the villagers. What are the odds that they wouldn't have eaten any of this herb they put in everything by pure chance?"
Aug 24, 2020 6:54 am
"You mean..." Nekurr turns to Hildar, mostly trying to figure out his general shape. "Sad priestess met the big dragon and mixed up up Aris for this Harridan god?" He looks around, confused for a moment "Who's this Zanagan fellow you mentioned?. He yaws as he tries to keep his eyes open "So do we have a case of mayor Harridan and weaver Arachne around here? Shouldn't we keep an eye on them and the little girl then?"
Aug 24, 2020 3:03 pm
"Yea, Oi don't 'ave much intention of sleeping t'noight...

One; wit a village full of drugged folk, who knows what might go on.

Two; every few years da winner of dis pageant decoides ta leave town and never come back.

Da judges dat weren't under da influence, may be in on whatever noighttoime activities dat might occur. Secret devotees of Arachne or whatever.

Once tings settle here, Oi'm gonna poloitely excuse moiself, ta go sleep at da farmers stable. Oi tink anyone who doesn't tink dey can sneak outta 'ere unnoticed should come wit me.
"

Nekkur snoozes off a little as Bruv talks. It seems his not much of a night cat
Aug 24, 2020 3:25 pm
A thought occurs to Nera. "What happens to the pageant winner for the night? Do they just go home?"

OOC:
So, I'm seeing a few different suggestions for what to do:

1) Just go to sleep.

2) Leave to sleep in the barn.

3) Leave and try to find the weaver.

4) Leave and try to locate Jacey Tabbins (pageant winner).

First, I'll remind you that I'm not an antagonistic GM, so there's no "wrong answer" here. I won't kill you all for "guessing" wrong. Do what your characters would do. Failed rolls may make your situation more undesirable, but you can still solve the mystery.

That said, Nekurr and Hildar will need to make an Average (PP) Discipline check to avoid just going to bed here. Add a setback on the check for being drowsy from the food and drink.

Second, anyone who wants to leave may do so, but if you want to do so quiety, you're going to have to roll a Stealth check versus the mayor and a second versus his guards outside. So, two checks: First vs. RPP with a boost (he's in his room) and two setbacks (you're unfamiliar with the house, and it's very quiet right now). Second is vs. PPP with a boost for darkness and a setback for unfamiliarity with the steps etc.

Of course, you may just go back outside without sneaking and then face the inevitable inquisition about what the devil you're doing up at this hour.

Aug 25, 2020 7:02 am
Nekurr's last snore wakes him wake fully as he realises that he shouldn't have eatten so much at the festival, given that everything had pipeleaf
OOC:
Well, sneaking is out of question for Nekurr with his 2 agility. I mean, unless we're looking for a major party fail on that department :D
Though he can stay and keep an eye on the mayor.

Maybe the advantages can remove penalties or add bonuses to help with the mayor's sneak out check? Nekuur is just noisy when sleepy

rolling.......
Hildar sits in a chair at the side of the room listening to everyone talk, feeling more and more drowsy. Maybe if I just rest my eyes for a mome....... he thinks to himself as he closes his eyes.....

LOL. We can treat the Stealth checks as group checks (all of you would then benefit from Nera's proficiency in that department as she helps orchestrate the escape, with setbacks for the extra bodies she has to help out). Let me know if that's the way you want to go, or if it's just one or two of you who want to slip out at this point.

To speed things along, how about an OOC show of hands? Would your character A) Stay here (sleeping or staying awake to keep an eye on the mayor's room), B) Sneak out (for whatever secondary goal afterward), or C) Blunder out loudly (for whatever secondary goal afterward)?
Aug 25, 2020 3:22 pm
OOC:
We shouldn't have to sneak I think, if we just tell the guards we're going to sleep at the stables of the farmer guy who offered that to us. They escort us there, whatever, then we can figure out how we go about town at night?

But file Bruv under "blunder out", I guess.

OOC:
Just be ready to explain yourselves in that case. You've been offered the only thing approximating an inn in this village, and you're opting for hay, so it's going to look either suspicious (you don't trust the mayor) or insulting (you would rather sleep in hay than take him up on his hospitality).
