Part 1: Prisoners of the Drow

Captured by the drow! You wouldn’t wish this fate upon anyone, yet here you are--locked in a dark cave, the cold, heavy weight of metal tight around your throat and wrists. You are not alone. Other prisoners are trapped in here with you, in an underground outpost far from the light of the sun.

Your captors include a cruel drow priestess who calls herself Mistress Ilvara of House Mizzrym. Over the past several days, you’ve met her several times, robed in silken garments and flanked by two male drow, one of whom has a mass of scars along one side of his face and neck.

Mistress Ilvara likes to impress her will with scourge in hand and remind you that your life now belongs to her. "Accept your fate, learn to obey, and you may survive." Her words echo in your memory, even as you plot your escape.

As prisoners of the drow, you have all been stripped of everything but your underclothing and are wearing thick iron slave collars along with manacles connected to iron belts by a short length of chain. You have spent most of your time in the slave pen with your fellow prisoners, emerging only occasionally under heavy guard to perform menial chores for your captors’ amusement. There are no comforts in the slave pen, aside from the clay chamber pots, and you are sore and aching from having to sit or lie on the stone floor to rest. Once each day, the drow guards provide you with a thin mushroom broth served in small clay bowls--your only means of sustenance.

In your days in the prison, you have managed to glean some information from your fellow prisoners, all of whom have been here longer than you.

Eldeth Feldrun is, perhaps, the most welcome face among the prisoners. A dwarven woman with long red hair tied up into two braids, she has done her best to keep spirits high even under the cruel rule of the drow. Fluent in Common, she’s also one of the easiest to speak to and is steadfast in her determination to escape the drow.

While less familiar looking to many of you than Eldeth, Jimjar also speaks fluent Common. He’s a gnomish man with gray leathery skin and a stout body. Unlike what you might have expected from a gnome native to the Underdark, Jimjar is fairly outgoing and eager for a wager.

Buppido is surprisingly gregarious and talkative for a derro, a humanoid resembling a small dwarf with blue-gray skin, an unruly white beard, and unnerving white eyes that lack both irises and pupils. Communication with him can be difficult, as he only speaks Undercommon, but he’s pleasantly willing to try for as long as you’re willing.

Topsy and Turvy, twin deep gnomes, are similarly challenging to speak to, considering they are fluent only in Undercommon. Topsy has been fairly social--or as social as deep gnomes can be--and she will often try to repeat what her brother, Turvy, says as he only mutters darkly to himself.

Shuushar is a strange-looking fishlike humanoid, but his peaceful demeanor is calming given your present situation. He’s remarkably stable, given how long he has been a captive here, and if questioned in Undercommon, he’s perfectly willing to speak with you.

Three of the prisoners have so-far been given a wide berth by everyone else. One, a large hulking blue-skinned quaggoth, will respond to questions only in Elvish, but his menacing appearance has left many to shy away from him. He sits on the opposite side of the cell from a male orc, a bully among the prisoners, always cracking his knuckles and threatening the smaller prisoners. A lone drow sits cross-legged by himself, rebuffing all attempts to talk to him, even ignoring the jeering of the drow guards who come to gawk at the prisoners.

And strangest of all, a small, ambulatory fungus sits quivering and shaking the corner.
OOC:
The drow have taken all of your equipment, so the only items you currently have with you are your underclothing, the collars and manacles, and your scavenged possession (if you have one). As a reminder, this means that spellcasters do not have any material components or focuses, which limits the spells you can cast.

Three cycles! Ardulaer knew exactly what Ilvara was doing, and it wouldn't work. Ardulaer was under the protection of forces far more powerful than some Mizzrym bitch could understand! Keeping her waiting and wondering, trying to wear down her resolve, it wouldn't work. Eltab, Pit Lord of hatred and retribution would give her the strength she needed.

Ardulaer looked again at the other prisoners; a typical bunch of slaves, barely worthy of her consideration, although if she could arrange for some of them to attack the guards at the right moment...

Her plans were yet vague, but she would not cower here in a cell. Such was not the way of the Mae-ett clan. Or, it hadn't been, back when there had been a clan. Now there was only Ardulaer, but she wouldn't let their honour be brought into question.

She fingered the gold coin that she had found as she examined the closest guards; could one of them be bought so cheap? Perhaps with this and the promise of more she would have a chance.

The guards seem, at best, ambivalent, and at worst, enjoying their position of power over the prisoners. They have been willing to talk to the prisoners, but whether that is out of boredom, cruelty, or enjoyment, Ardulaer could not tell.
Apr 21, 2016 8:12 pm
Braegar sits studying his fellow captives, trying to figure out which one would be the most able to help him escape.

The big blue one could be useful, so could the Orc if I can make him cooperate. Eldeth is friendly and clearly doesn't want o to be here anymore than I do and I'm sure Jimjar would be a decent guide, at the very least they speak common.

He chuckled to himself

All this time training and planning to find the Drow and now I have, I'm trying to get away from them

He stands up and walks towards Eldretg

"So, I say we convince the Orc to hit the Drow male over there and start a fight. When the guards rush in we jump them. Unless you have a better idea?

He chuckles and sits next to her

OOC:
Correct, Scotash, none of the characters described in the first post are player characters. They are all fellow prisoners who are captured.
"Aye, dragonborn," Eldeth said. "Any drow getting hit is alright with me. You got any ideas for these shackles? It'll be mighty hard to take on the guards with these rotten things and no weapons."

Eldeth held up her hands, which were stuck in heavy manacles, and she gestured towards Braegar's wrists, which were bound in the same fashion.
Apr 22, 2016 8:48 am
"That just adds to the challenge and makes our escape more daring, but you're right. How long you been stuck here. There must be some sort of weakness we can exploit?

He gives a resigned sigh and looks towards the spot that he hit the iron bar he had scavenged.

She's right. Chained and no weapons apart from an old iron bar.

"Don't suppose you know who holds the key?"
Apr 22, 2016 7:16 pm
Seeing the dwarf and the dragonborn conspiring together raised an alarm in Ardulaer and it was everything she could do to restrain herself from shouting the guard,

No, I need to remember that for the moment I have more in common with these, these uplanders, than I do with our captors. It is in my best interest for the balance of power to swing more in favour of the prisoners.

The thought was a strange one. Indeed, it was one that probably very few drow would consider, but Ardulaer was from the Mae-ett clan, who had long been campaigners for the rights of common drow. This gave her a slight advantage over others of her mind when it came to thinking her noble birth was perhaps not the absolute most important thing.

Following on from that thought she surveyed her fellow captives, thinking that she could perhaps play an active part in swinging the balance of power.

Which of these would be most likely to cooperate? she wondered.

Janko's head was throbbing as if his skull was a bard's drum. The dozen of tavern gathering songs played on repeated, each chorus louder than the previous. Barben couldn't quite think straight as his symptoms of withdrawal have been progressing over the past ten days. The scuffed up bard's stomach grumbled bringing him back to the reality of the situation.

Janko get a grip. You need to get a hold of yourself before its too late.

He looked around, trying to ignore his migraine, to see who didn't have a defeated look painted across their face. Shuushar, the fish looking one, was one of the few who was stable. Janko walked over and sat down with a weakened effort. The bard speaks Undercommon that he learned while dealing narcotics.

"Hey, I think its about time I made a friend in here."

Barben kept it short and discreet.

4 days. I've been here 4 days. How the hell could I be so stupid to get caught. I don't even know where they came from. Damn it. Need to make sure this doesn't get back to father. I'll never hear the end of it.

Wil grasps the silk rope in his hands, working it, feeling it examining it. I wonder if there's anything special about this rope. He quickly looks up at the human that just spoke. I wonder what they're chatting about. Hmm this can't be good. I need to make sure I keep an eye out on that one. He speaks the same language as these underdark assholes. For all I know, he might be in on this.

"Don't suppose you know who holds the key?"
Eldeth nodded appreciatively to Braegar. "You're right, I reckon. It would be one hell of a story if we all get outta here. Hard to keep track of the days down here. I must have been down here at least a tenday. Maybe even more, but I haven't been able to make my move yet. With some courage like yours, maybe we'll have a chance."

Eldeth grumbled to herself out of frustration at the whole situation. "Different guards come every time when they make us do their chores for them. They might all have a key. There are three guards over there, though."

Eldeth pointed past the locked gate that blocked the entrance to their cell, towards a large stalactite hanging beyond it.

"I've seen three guards in that tower over there," Eldeth said. "They hollow them out and live in them like the dark dwellers they are. Don't know how attentive they are, but they supposed to be guarding this area."

Ardulaer took a long look at all of the prisoners, trying to get a sense of their alliances. Buppido, the small derro, and Jimjar, the deep gnome, seemed to be the most outgoing, friendly, and willing to talk to their fellow prisoners. Ardulaer suspected that Eldeth would be the same, if it wasn't for Ardulaer's clear drow heritage. Shuushar, the fish-like humanoid, has always given the most calm, level-headed answers, but how helpful he would be in a prison breakout, Ardulaer can't tell. Sarith, a fellow drow, seemed to know the most about the area and their prison, but past on her limited experience with him, she suspected he would be unwilling to talk about it.
Valcos says:
"Hey, I think its about time I made a friend in here."
Shuushar looked over at Janko from where he sat on the floor. "Friends, yes," Shuushar replied in undercommon. "Friends are always good in a time stress."
OOC:
Fernymerk, if you want, you can roll an investigation check on the rope if you want to examine it further.
Apr 23, 2016 2:59 am
Janko relaxed in his spot on the floor, not making direct eye contact with Shuushar. He massaged his temples to aid his thought stay straight.

"As your friend, I want you to know I dont plan on dying in this hell hole. "

The bard had found silk rope earlier that he is now sliding over to the fish-man.

"Thats all I got to work with, plus you."

The half-elf was implying they needed a plan, just he didn't ave a direction for one yet.

Although it made her feel sick to talk to a male traitor, Ardulaer supposed the other drow would be the most likely to respond favourably to her. She waited for a moment when the guards were looking elsewhere and wandered over near him, careful not to actually look at him she made herself look busy.

"I have vowed revenge on Ilvara Mizzrym and I will not rest until she is dead. Are you one of her spies or will you help me?"

She offered the choice without preamble. She didn't want to be this man's friend, she only needed his help.
Apr 23, 2016 4:03 am
OOC:
Based on passive perception, Wilcome and Braegar notice the passing of the rope. A few of the other prisoners also notice but no one reacts. No guards come, so you assume that they either did not notice or don't care.
Shuushar held out his hand to press the rope back in Janko's hands. "My thanks," he said. "But I have no need for such things."
fluglichkeiten says:
"I have vowed revenge on Ilvara Mizzrym and I will not rest until she is dead. Are you one of her spies or will you help me?"
The drow did not look at Ardulaer, continuing to stare at nothing at all. "You will never leave this prison," he said in Undercommon. "Except by way of drow guard or the spiders."
Apr 23, 2016 5:40 am
Janko was not offended by the refusal. The offering was just a gesture in case the man would have use for it. He almost feels complacent in his current position, but the bard was unsure. Barben tucked the rope back away then stood up to stretch.

"I hope you're not enjoying the mushroom stew, the guards add their spit."

Looking around, Janko absorbed his surroundings. He would recall the routine he had been following the past ten days.

OOC:
From what you can tell, Shuushar appears to have accepted the situation and is at peace with it. He does not like being here and would leave if possible, but he seems to recognize that that is unlikely.

Three times per day, the drow guards will come to gather a few prisoners and put them to work doing menial chores in the prison camp. Once per day, they come to deliver your daily meal of gruel, which occurred just recently. The guards are unlikely to return soon--unless, of course, they come to heckle you, as they are wont to do. They are most likely going to return in the morning (or what you assume would be the morning--it is difficult to track the days without the sun).

When the guards took you out for your work duties, you were able to get a vague sense of the layout of the encampment. The drow outpost is located in a high cavern, approximately 100 feet above the rocky floor. The outpost consists of a series of small caves in the cavern walls and four hanging towers--hollowed-out stalactites connected by walkways, stairs, and rope bridges. A giant mass of spider webs cover the lower parts of the stalactites, creating a covering that prevents the hanging towers from being seen from the cavern floor. You know the tower hanging directly across from your prison cell is a guard tower, containing a few guards on duty, but you do not know what the other towers are used for.

baktrax says:
"You will never leave this prison," he said in Undercommon. "Except by way of drow guard or the spiders."
This response took Ardulaer by surprise, she had seen the webs below but hadn't thought the spiders would be so bold as to come up this far.

"So you have given up, how male of you! It is no wonder yours is the weaker gender!" she replied hoping to provoke him, "when I have Ilvara's head in my hands I will bring it back here to show you what a resolute heart can accomplish!"

OOC:
Eldeth appears eager to escape this prison and leave the underdark, although she is reluctant to work with those native to the Underdark. The male drow appears angry and withdrawn, and you suspect he may be withholding information.

Sure, you can insight check a PC. If Ardulaer is trying to hide something, flug can roll a deception check vs. scotash's insight roll. If Ardulaer has the higher value, then flug can go ahead and write whatever you want about what Braegar knows. If Ardulaer has the lower value, then flug has to write an honest description of what Ardulaer is feeling/acting like. If Ardulaer isn't trying to hide her intentions or anything, then flug can go ahead and just describe what Braegar can tell off of her without rolling.

@fernymerk You run your hands over the rope, testing its strength and construction. It feels well-made and sturdy, but you are unsure how much weight it can hold.
Apr 23, 2016 7:13 pm
Disgusted at this poor excuse for a drow Ardulaer strides off towards the derro,

"Bupido isn't it? I know our people don't usually get along but for now we have a common enemy. If you can help me kill Ilvara you shall have my gratitude and I, Ardulaer of House Mae-ett, shall be in your debt."
Apr 23, 2016 7:15 pm
Buppido looked up at Ardulaer eagerly, and his mouth split into a wide grin at the mention of killing Ilvara.

"I will help you with anything you need," Buppido replied. "Anything at all."
Apr 23, 2016 7:29 pm
Ardulaer stopped stunned, she looked back at her fellow drow who had been so unhelpful, then again at this derro who was ready to risk all with no questions asked. She nodded in gratitude,

"Are you typical of your race?" she asks, then thinks better of it, "never mind. The first thing we need to do is get free of our bonds, do you have any ideas how we could accomplish that?"

"I wish I knew," Buppido said, tugging on his manacles in vain. "You look strong. Can you break them? Or, or, do you have a key?"

Buppido looked up at Ardulaer expectantly, his hands extended as if he was waiting for Ardulaer to break his chains in two.

Ah, so he is a typical derro.

"Don't worry, just be ready to follow my instructions when the time comes."

The bard moved in closer to be more involved in the conversation. He found it interesting that the prisoners were so diverse. Janko was glad the lot of them started to conspire a plan.

"Im in on this plan, though killing on the way out isnt my forte."

He started to compare his physical status to the larger folk in captivity.

"I usually talk my way out of holes."

If you want to try to break the manacles with the iron rod, then roll an attack and damage (use the stats of a club in the Player's Handbook for weapon damage and whether or not you can add your proficiency bonus). If you try to smash the manacles with the iron rod, then you have to either try to break someone else's manacles or you someone else has to try to break yours. If you try to break the manacles with just your own two hands, you can try to break your own.

@Valcos You try desperately to wrench your hands out of the manacles, but you aren't able to get them out. In your effort, several of the other prisoners seem to notice your attempts.

It's just a straight dexterity check to slip out of the manacles, but it doesn't matter--either roll would have failed.

After clearly struggling to slip out of the manacles, the bard addressed Ardulaer's questions. Janko spoke the following in Undercommon directed at the drow.

"Actually, I speak Undercommon as well. Though, my set of skills beyond that aren't that valued in this situation. We do share the want to escape here, regardless of what it takes. Try to slip out of your manacles, I've been trying for days."

Her hands were free! And it was... embarrassing. Why had it taken the suggestion of one of the other prisoners to try that? Examining her reasoning she supposed that her opinion of her jailers had just been too high. If she had somehow been captured by humans or dwarves she would have thought they might make a mistake and tried to slip free, but with drow she had assumed they were competent.

Lesson learned, no more assumptions. And perhaps drow can be as incompetent as some of the other races.

Rubbing her wrists and stretching, Ardulaer grinned at the other prisoners,

"We will be out of here soon enough, my friends!"

"I'm guessing that title has done you no good down here, Matron."

Janko wondered how a drow with a title could be stuck in a shit hole like this, but then he remembered something. He remebered how easy it was to bullshit with a little confidence and knowledge. Barben didn't think Ardulaer was being anything more than the typical clansman though, who wouldn't be proud of their origin.

"Come butter my wrists, I'm not as sly as you, m'lady."

Braegar attempted to slide the manacles off, but after a minute of struggling, he couldn't manage to get his hands through. Wilcome followed suit, but the results were the same. He couldn't manage to yank his hands through, as easily as Ardulaer appeared to.

Ardulaer and Janko both examined the walls and crevices in the stone, but the only fungi in the cell was the small ambulatory fungus, pressing itself into the corner of the cell away from the others.

Braegar indicates the male drop sitting in the corner,a and appears to be getting annoyed with the manacles

"Ah yes, the guards here are very concerned for the safety of the prisoners. I am sure they will rush right in if somebody is playing dead." Ardulaer replies, her voice dripping with sarcasm, "No, I think we must play to their stronger emotions; lust and avarice. Since they haven't tried to take advantage of me before now there must be something preventing that avenue, so we need to go with greed."

"Fortunately I have studied some arcane lore, purely for my own amusement. With my hands free I could now conjure the image of a gold coin, then pretend to hide it when the guard sees. He will come for it if he doesn't suspect collusion, so the first part of the plan is to make a show of the rest of you mistreating me. Uplanders abusing a drow should be believable, I think."
Apr 28, 2016 11:21 am
"Or we can slaughter one of the twins since there is two of them, of course."

Janko added to Ardulaer's sarcasm. Though, he thought that if this coin trick doesn't work... killing someone to cause a distraction is an option. Ideally though, he would rather no prisoners die until he has a clean get away.

"I can slur at you in Undercommon, make it sound believable for them to understand. Just don't know how over the top you want me to go..."

The bard started to play the roll over dramatic in his head, as if it were a scene out of a play. His head's throbbing returned for a moment, causing his right eye to wince slightly.

"Nobody is killing anyone, unless it's a guard and that is only as a last resort"

Braegar glares at Janko

"Anyway, my idea wasn't to make the sympathise with the gnome more to draw them in and dispose of a lifeless body"
Apr 28, 2016 12:05 pm
"But to dispose of a body they would enter in force, perhaps avarice will bring one alone."

Ardulaer looks Janko in the eye, a slight smile tugging playfully at the corner of her mouth,

"You laugh like you're joking, but you would like that, wouldn't you?"

She turns her back on him and strides confidently in the direction of the gate, before turning back and saying over her shoulder,

"Typical bard really, you just want to watch others at work and then go and brag about it."
Apr 28, 2016 2:02 pm
The bard waved his hands like he was revealing a picture.

"Oh, but what a tale it would be! Ardulaer, Matron of Clan Mae-ett, a drow captured by her own kind stuck in a cage with a dozen misfits. She looked her companions in the eye with a magnificent twinkle. 'Comrades, I know my people... and there is one thing they cannot resist'. The brave drow walked from one side of the imprisonment to the other while her fellow cellmates stood there in awe of her. 'That one thing is my fine noble ass!' and she, without more than a flip of her hair, drew all the attention of the guards... occupying them with her lovely presence alone while the rest of us slipped away. Living. Living another day to tell the tale of the beautifully brave Ardulaer, Matron of Clan Mae-ett."

His little story was directed at the group more so than Ardulaer. Though, he doubted he had their attention as this was not a tavern.

"Personally, I'd like to see the story unfold... but you know."

Janko ended his sentence at Ardulaer, jokingly implying that she wouldn't get the attention of the guards the way she suggested.

Ardulaer spun back to face the bard,

"You don't think I could get a guard in here? I could get a guard in here."

And she spun back, heading for the gate while arranging her rags so they looked like they were just about to fall off. As she neared the gate her head swam as she nervously planned,

How should I play this? Coy? Demure? Sultry? Brazen? It all depends on the tastes of the guard. How did I get myself into this?

She pressed her body up tight against the bars, one of which pushed into the centre of her chest, enunciating her curves.

The first thing I'm going to do when I get out of here, she thought, is getting some decent clothes.

"Hello?" she shouted into the darkness, "there's been a mistake!"

Janko interjected quickly in the midst of Ardulaer's purr. The half-elf had to admit, she may be able to pull in a few too many guards if they had all seen her pressed against the bars. Barben began to speak in Undercommon.

"Heh, the real men wouldn't be guarding the cells with dainty woman in them."

The bard was insinuating that the guard didn't have interest in woman and wasn't tough enough to guard only men. He stood up and walked closer to the guard while looking him in the eyes.

"Real men would have prestigious armour, not these rags the Mistress gives you. You look pathetic."

Janko looked the guard from boots to the tips of his ears with an unimpressed look exaggerated on his face.

"You're not a real man, guard. You're a worthless pawn that delivers our food.

He spat at the guards boots, turning the dissatisfied look to a disgusted one.

"Now, don't even think this lustful woman has any real interest in you. Get us our grub or get the fuck out of our faces, scum."

Janko began taunting the guard, as Braegar circled the cell to take up position besides the entrance. Janko attempted to weave his words with the familiar arcane magic but felt the spell fade as soon as it formed. The words hung in the air, but it didn't seem to have the effect that it normally did.

Janko disliked the guard pointing his loaded crossbow directly at his unprotected self. The bard didn't particularly fancy being impaled by a sturdy bolt, he already had enough pain with these headaches. The chances of that drow firing that bolt is probably pretty high.

I might as well keep the attention on me. The bears in this cage are the real threat.

His head throbbed and his skin was agitated, though he didn't want to show that to the others. Barben walked closer to the cell's bars and tilted his chin up at the drow guard.

"There are bears in the woods, my dear drow. I fear them myself." he tapped his chest softly. "You should leave now before a claw finds it way to your throat." he pointed at the other guard near Ardulaer, gripping his neck with a clawed hand. "Your bolts wont do you any good with what's out there beyond these cages." The bard held the bars tight "I'm glad I have this cage to protect me, you can't say the same." Janko nodded his head a few times with a serious face.

"Oh I don't think you're bolt's strong enough to tear through my friend here." Wil hides behind the quaggoth and says in elvish,"Please forgive me for this. I think it's the only way we can get out of here."

We can help you get out of here, if you give me a hand and follow my lead?

Without waiting for a response he shouts in common

Who you calling lizard spawn, you over grown goblin! I'm gonna break off your tusks and use them as toothpicks!

I hope this gets them in here. This is going to hurt.... a lot!
