Patrons

In this game, you are part of a team that is blasting off into orbit to rescue The Aurora. This is very difficult and likely requires a group patron for resources and technology. There are three categories of patrons that come with various benefits and strings attached. As a group we will decide which we want!

Note: Magic items are subject to approval. There are a few broken ones in some of the sourcebooks. In general, the DMG ones should be fine).

Option 1. Local Organization: Characters are mostly making this happen by themselves with the help of their personal associations. They might be working with a university, a guild, or private benefactor, or entirely by themselves. Such characters are likely extraordinary people to have devised their own ship. To reflect the extraordinary of such characters, they will gain +2 character levels but will only have access to 1 uncommon magic item- all other resources have gone into the ship.

Examples of these Patrons: Morgrave University, Clifftop Adventurer's Society, New Gallifar.

Option 2. National Organization: A nation is backing your project, providing resources, experts, and materials. The ship belongs to them, and you are the elite crew that they have chosen and trained. These nations have deep pockets and equipped you with the tools to handle many situations. You will have 2 rare magic item and 3 uncommon magic items of your choosing. Your ship will be stocked with 3 standard healing potions per character. Your characters should include this nation in their background and a reason they are willing or even eager to work for them. Each nation is unique, so the specific choice of which nation will affects things.

Examples: Aundair, Breland, Thrane, Droam

Option 3: International Organization: You are directly working for the Dragonmarked Houses, the most powerful organizations in Khorvaire. You will have access to the most powerful magical technologies but also beholden to their schemes. You start the game with 1 very rare item, 2 rare items, and 3 uncommon items. You can have any number of common magic items and your ship will be stocked with unlimited healing potions. In addition, your mission will have new objectives. Your ship will be self-aware and beholden directly to the houses and their interests.

So what do you think?

I vote for Option 2 so we don't have to worry about a rickety ship accidentally exploding or a sentient ship intentionally self destructing.

I'll vote for Aundair and its Arcane Congress as our backers.

I like that

I like the autonomy of running our own ship, as well as being part of something greater than purely politics. My vote is for option 1, but still working in collaboration with the Arcane Congress.

I like the idea of being independent contractors. But having the extra support could be nice

It could be, but I also like the idea of being level 10 instead of level 8, also.

Plus, if we decide on being a warforged crew with a couple of meatbags, we could design the ship such that it is a direct connection into the controls of the ship, kind of thing. *lol* I'm getting ahead of myself.

I like the idea of having to potentially deal with what happens when we don't have a deep-pocketed organization behind us -- fixing the ship on the fly, having to scrounge up supplies, etc.

I'd vote for #1, but I'd be okay with either of the others. The character I've built is Mark of Detection/House Medani, so if we wanted to try option #3, that'd be a possibility.

To sum up the discussion, we have two votes for #1 (78RPMLife and HeroAmongMen) and two votes for #2 (runekyndig and annex) with a general sense among players that either choice would be okay.

If we were to do a prioritized vote, with first, second, and last priorit. it seems to look a bit like this

____________Patron senario
annex__________2__1 __3
78RPMLife______1__3__2
CancerMan
HeroAmongMen__1__2__3
runekyndig______2__3__1
SchadDad_______1__2__3

Most votes______1__2__3

CancerMan can swing the outcome

This is good math! Does everyone's ranking check out? I'm assuming the numbers indicate the option and their order indicate preference, with most preferred option being on the left.

If we score a first place vote as worth two points, a second place vote as worth 1 point, and a third place vote as worth 0 points, then the scores are at:

Option 1: 7 pts
Option 2: 6 pts
Option 3: 2 pts

If CancerMan wants Option 2 as first place rank and Option 1 as second place rank, it'll force a tie. If that happens, I'll roll a die for the tie breaker.

That's my order. 2 > 1 > 3

If we go with Option 1, we'll need to hammer out the details of how we came together. Probably when we were low levels, working our way towards getting our own ship?

Option 2 seems to rely less on ourselves figuring out the team since we can assume that our nation would assign us.

I guess the question is how much time are we willing to spend on team-building and history? I'm fine with either option, but I'd like to set the expectation in case anyone believes we're going to start playing soon.

Option 2 doesn't preclude character interaction before we were assigned. Some of us could be successful pairs/teams already or even rivals who all have The Right Stuff. The random assignment might even lead to more chances for RP during the one shot. As for building backstories... It takes as long as it takes to get it right.

Right, but I feel like Option 1 requires us to really hammer out the details if we're 10th level with our own ship, so if someone just wants to start playing and feel out their character as we go, it's better to go with Option 2.

So, it seems that we should decide on patron, in order to help runekyndig and myself in solidifying character concepts (since we are essentially the last two players to decide).
Sounds like the ultimate choice is up to you, CancerMan.

What’ll it be?

I think I will lean more towards option 1. Being an independent crew hired to salvage in space seems to fit better with the swashbuckling aspect of Eberron.

Alright! I think that settles the tally.

- Option 1: 4 votes
- Option 2: 2 votes
- Option 3: 0 votes

And using the mathematical approach proposed by @DM,

- Option 1: 35 points
- Option 2: 33 points
- Option 3: 16 points

Option 1 wins out in both scenarios.

Ah, well. Bye, magic items. Hello, rickety ship. :P

Let's not end up like this.

Ideas on which organization we're working with?

We still could, but us warforged will be perfectly fine.
