Chapter 2: Hope

You march your forlorn bandit prisoners north, toward Hope. After an hour, the forest gives way to farmland. Several of the farms lie fallow and some of the homesteads are abandoned. A few are even burned to the ground. However others stand defiant with vibrant homes and sprawling crops.
[ +- ] Lands Surrounding Hope
Eventually you round a hill and the town itself comes into view. An old keep overlooks this village that looks like it was once home to 500 people or more. Banners are conspicuously missing from its battlements.

After the keep, a great hand carved of black stone is Hope's second-most-visible landmark, rising up at the center of the village with its thumb and five fingers splayed out. The area around the hand is a great dig, where someone has appeared to have tried and failed to excavate whatever is underneath.

An open-air stone temple, a two-story inn built atop steaming hot springs, and an outfitters’ shop stand among two dozen other buildings that make up the heart of the village, while farmhouses dot the neighboring hillsides, surrounded by broad fields of crops.
[ +- ] The Town of Hope
The sun is high in the sky and lunch hour fast approaches. A bell rings somewhere in the town as you approach. A pair emerges from behind the inn, hastily donning jackets and doing up sword belts, which you quickly realize are old Arkasian military issue. Eight bowmen emerge from other buildings and start taking up positions along a low, crumbling wall, although none draw arrows yet. The two dressed in Arkasian uniforms stride up the road toward you.

"Good day, strangers. Looks like you ran into some of our wayward citizens along the road. Many thanks for brining them in alive, I doubt they deserved. I'm Ruth Willowmane, the sheriff 'round these parts. This is my brother, Matthew, and them back there with their bows are just being cautious, don't be offended. Mind telling us who you are and stating your business?"

The Sheriff's tone is friendly but assertive. Matthew is silent and studies each of you carefully.

"Well this is a bit smaller than I imagined. Nice hand tho!" Kaa muses as they enter the settlement.

When Ruth comes out and introduces himself he grunts as greeting.

"I'm Kaa, from a village called Mossgrove. Yes, a bugbear family lives there, and we only eat the bad children. So well it was my turn to weed the gardens but a messenger came with something about warriors and wizards burning candles and this seemed more interesting." he says with a silly smile.

He glances at the four bandits, and at the number of guards present.
"Getting outnumbered by the bandits?"

OOC:
I was typing this as Pitrio was doing his post. Slow typist I guess :)
"Greetings, sheriff," responds Hilmar to Ruth Willowmane and nods to her brother. "My name is Hilmar Tomenius. These are my fellow travellers, Naeris, Euphoria, Alfrey Whiteheath and Kaa," gesuring to each in turn. "We were travelling to your town. I have heard reports that the guardians of Hope have sent out messengers - as Kaa was just referring to - searching for warriors and mages who might be able to assist. About an hour away, South of here, in the Howling Wood, the road was blocked by a huge tree, which had been cut down. We scouted round it and saw these four lying in wait. We were concerned that they were intending to attack travellers on the road. Unfortunately, they heard one of us and fired their crossbows at us. We managed to subdue and disarm them," he says, showing the Willowmanes the scimitar and crossbow he is holding. "They told us they are Artur, Raishe, Aegar, and Rose. They told us that they were part of the Night Blades and planning to ambush a waggon from a mining camp bound for Hope. They told us that they did not intend to harm any of the people with the waggon but were planning to take all of its gear and hand this over to Ralavaz, who would give them each enough money to see them through the winter. They also told us that there would be a higher reward for bringing them in alive, not that we were thinking of killing them, of course, if that could be avoided.

On our way to the town they also told us a bit more. Artur said Ralvaz was wearing some kind of golden mask, which seemed to make him very persuasive. They said he caused trouble for the town ten years ago when he was in league with his brother. They said the authorities of Hope were stronger then and managed to round them up in a barn, which was set on fire. Only Ralavaz made it out, with Gardren and the rest of the trapped Night Blades dying in the fire. They said that the edge of Ralavaz's face by the mask is scarred from burning. Artur also offered to show where his hideout is if this would mitigate any punishment from you.

The girl Rose said she was offered some money and went to a meeting with Ralavaz. If I remember correctly she said Ralavaz did something to them that she suspects was magical. She said: 'We went from curious to fanatical.' She says she doesn't even remember them putting on the uniforms and thought that our capturing them and so on cleared their heads."

He looks round at the prisoners and his companions to see if he has missed anything. "That's what they said. I am sure they are capable of speaking up for themselves."

Then he remembers something the sheriff said and adds, "You mentioned your 'wayward citizens' - do you recognise any of them?"

"Well, that's quite the story! My thanks to you all." the sheriff calls out. She waves her hand behind her and the bowmen disperse back into their respective buildings.

"Yeah I recognize these louts. Not the smartest residents, but good people all of them. They're lucky you didn't put holes in their hides. Matthew, take 'em up to station and take their stories in their words. Maybe get them a stiff drink."

If the party consents to Matthew taking their prisoners, the former bandits all give sheepish thanks to the party.

Ruth also responds to Kaa's comments: "We are indeed feeling a bit outnumbered. Any chance you brought that big ol' axe all this way to help even the numbers out?"

No offence, Sheriff, but we still do expect to be paid,- cursed woman's voice sounded friendly, but one could clearly tell she meant it.

Looking towards the others Hilmar remarks,"I don't know about you, but I'd quite like to sell these weapons and armour we took from the bandits," indicating to the crossbow and scimitar he is holding, and looking at the gear Kaa is carrying."We can split all the proceeds between us. That way, we'll at least have a bit of coin to pay for food and drink and a stay at the inn. We might even be ble to buy more items." Then speaking more quietly, "It's possible we might end up helping the sheriff against these bandits. So it might be an idea to keep the 'uniforms' - the cloaks and masks - you never know if they'll come in useful."
OOC:
I take it that the bandits had some ammunition for their crossbows? Also - is the leather armour an integral part of the 'uniforms' or is this just ordinary leather armour and the uniforms consisted of the masks and cloaks?

To Euphoria, the sheriff nods

"I understand. We are a little cash-strapped at the moment, truth be told. That part Artur told you about the reward was nonsense, probably just wanted to make sure you didn't kill the four of them. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful - saved me the trouble and danger. I can offer a purse of 60 gold for you to share between yourselves. Or, if you prefer, the town has plenty of property. There's a nIce farmhouse just on the hill up there, been vacant a while. I'll sign the deed over right now. Feel free to look it over before you decide."

"And hey, if you feel inclined to help us solve this bandit problem for good, we'll show our gratitude by sharing some of our old magic treasures from the Imperial days. Weapons, armor, a spell book."

Len

Feb 25, 2021 5:50 am
To Hilmar, the Sheriff says "Yep, might be able to get some good coin for those, look like good quality. Wonder where Ralavaz is finding good steel like that? Not like he's got a forge holed up in that Lonely Tower of his. You should drop by Grayhorn Outfitters. He pays a fair price for used quality goods."
Feb 25, 2021 7:13 am
When the Sheriff mentions not putting holes into them, he grins at the one he put the javelin through and pats his shoulders roughly.

Kaa nods and hmpfs along with Euphoria at the mention of not working free.

"And I heard you have a very nice hot spring? Not giving away that one?" he smirks and counts on his fingers a bit for their share.

When Hilmar mentions selling the gear he is again nodding. "Yes yes, we have no use for them, into coin they go."

"I have always wanted a magic weapon, so that sounds good to me." he responds to the Sheriff's proposal for ridding them of bandits. Then turns to the others. "But for today I want to rest." in his head he is already getting soft in a hot steamy bath.
Feb 25, 2021 8:53 am
Naeris is glad to let the others speak for her. She's keen to offload the gear if a decent price is offered - or even if it isn't. She never really felt it belonged to the party. She's pleased to hear talk of resting but isn't keen about having a bath.

Feb 25, 2021 9:13 pm
Sheriff Willowmane responds to Kaa's interest in rest:

"The Summerspring Inn is a good place to rest. See that irregular-shaped two-story building at the center of town, see the one with the steam coming out of the pipes on the side there? Run by Amanda Jess. It looks a little ramshackle but there's nothing more relaxing than a dip in the natural hot springs bellow."
Feb 25, 2021 9:21 pm
Shall we sell this gear and then have lunch? Naeris prompts. She's sick of action and negotiations.
Feb 26, 2021 1:08 am
"We'll take your advice and head to Grayhorn Outfitters with this gear. Thank you for the offer of the farmhouse. Before agreeing to this option I'm sure we would all like to view it first. I would also like to know if it comes with any liabilities - having to pay local taxes and such. This might not put us off of course, but we would like to know what these are. Once we've discussed this we will get back to you about this and the bandit problem," responds Hilmar to the sheriff. He also asks where they may find her (the sheriff) and at what times.
[ +- ] Astroloma says
"Excellent idea, let's sell this gear and then have lunch. Then maybe we could look at this farmhouse this afternoon. I would also like to make use of that hot spring." After the long journey to Hope Hilmar finds the prospect of a soak in a hot spring really inviting.

That settles it then. To the Outfitters and then we take a rest!,- Euphoria smiled and got moving. Let's get going and let Hilmar deal with all the boring stuff, he seems to be enjoying it,- she chuckled, and then, addressing the wizard, said: we're gonna sell our trophies first, you'll probably catch up with us at the Outfitters when you're done with the sheriff.
I'm wondering what do they have in stock...,- the sorcerer could hear tiefling's words fading out as she and everyone following her were going away.

The party arrives at Greyhorn Outfitters. A pair of huge black horns protrudes out from above the heavy wooden door of this large shop. A horseshoe, a bundle of rope, and a pickaxe are carved into the sign that hangs overhead. One side of the building features a stable with twelve stalls, presently holding four well-worked draft horses and a beautiful white stallion.

Grayhorn Outfitters is a cluttered mess holding all forms of tack and equipment, including both adventuring and exploration gear. In the back you can see arms and armor of all sizes. Inside you meet Gavun and Arianne Greyhorn, the sturdy but elderly couple that runs the shop.

"Hey, some new folks in town, welcome! That's some good steel there. I'll be sure to give you a fair price."
OOC:
The party makes the agreed-upon sale of bandit loot, gaining 21 gold pieces per character. If you'd like to continue chatting or shopping here, feel free!

Some of the party move on to the Summerspring Inn in search of a hot bath. They arrive at the large, two-story building which seems to sit slightly askew, supported at its corners by heavy beams that keep it from collapsing completely. Whenever the wind blows, the whole building makes a deep creaking sound, like someone trying to get comfortable in a tilting chair.

Inside you meet Amanda Jess, owner and proprietor. She doesn't look quite as old as the Greyhorns, but maybe she has just aged better, it's hard to say. She gets anyone who asks a hefty lunch started: baked hare with garlic and crowberry tart with a Glass of apple cider. While she's cooking, Amanda asks some pointed questions:

"Word has it that you brought back Artur and them without a scratch! How'd you manage a trick like that? I say I haven't seen such a fearsome company come through here in quite some time, at least not one on our side. What brings you to Hope?"
Feb 26, 2021 7:10 am
The infernal greets the owners and goes into the stable. She stops next to a stallion, pets his mane, and asks: Does this horse have a name?

Naeris doesn't like the look of the giant hand and hole-in-the-ground and keeps as far from them as possible.

In the shop, she's never seen so much gear before. The place arouses much curiosity but most of the items don't seem very practical. Despite this, she'll be looking for an excuse to visit again, just to see what's here.

She still has most of her rope but buys a length of rope for 1gp. You can never have too much rope.

She sticks with the party for now and moves on to the Inn with them.

He waves to the sheriff as they move on.

"Sell, lunch, bath, perfect~~"

Kaa happily whistles along while he unloads the gear he was carrying at the shop. He takes a few of the weapons in his hands to take a feel of what it might be like to use them: greatsword, axe and shield, pike, warpick, halberd ... and while thinking of fighting various more bandits he does buys a pike and a shield with warpick for 20 gold (if available). He will spend some time during the day to fiddle around with a reasonable way to carry them. He easily gets grumpy when its not so simple.
OOC:
Wow according to handbook a pike is 18 lb, while a maul is only 10, and a halberd only 6 😅
At the inn he is happy to ask for lunch indeed, quickly spending the coins he just recieved. At the fearsome comment he shows his bicepses and makes a mean grumpy face "Which of us is the fearsomest?" but its hard to take him seriously. When they get the food: he is a surprisingly slow eater, but they already experienced that on the road.

To the company he says "So, about the reward, what's the point of a house?"
OOC:
I won't go more forward in the events in case the conversations go on more.
Feb 26, 2021 6:20 pm
Alfrey joins his companions at Greyhorn Outfitters. He too purchases a length of rope, remembering the rush to restrain the downed bandits earlier that day. He considered a pair manacles as well, but decides that the rope would be a more versatile way of achieving the same goal.

At the inn, he is happy to partake in the hearty meal. At Amanda’s mention of their encounter with Artur’s group he looks sidelong at Hilmar, curious as to whether the wizard will reveal that it was primarily his magic that allowed the group to resolve that conflict so swiftly.

As the conversation later turns to the topic of the farmhouse as a possible reward, Alfrey offers a few words as to its advantages. "We would have all the usual benefits of a house — that is free lodging, free storage, privacy, and so on. Then there is the possibility of making some extra coin off the place. Homes aren’t always easy to find, and a good one is likely to be worth more than 60 gold pieces in the long run."
Feb 26, 2021 10:53 pm
Pitrio says:
"Which of us is the fearsomest?" but its hard to take him seriously.
He's quite ferocious! I'm glad he's with us.
Feb 26, 2021 11:39 pm
Hilmar joins the others at Greyhorn Outfitters. Like Alfrey he buys a length of rope - he used most of his for tying up the bandits. He also buys two throwing knives, a steel mirror, a signal whistle, a scroll case, ten sheets of paper, charcoal, two sacks and a thin scabbard for his wand.
OOC:
See character sheet.
On the way from the outfitters to the inn, looking round at the village, he says, "I assumed the town of Hope would be bigger than this."

At Amanda's question, he notices Alfrey's sidelong glance. "We managed to sneak up on them and we had them outnumbered. Knowing what we know now, they weren't the hardest of adversaries. I think they were rather out of their depth to be honest. We came to Hope when we heard reports of messengers from your town seeking warriors and mages."

He is delighted when the lunch of baked hare with garlic and crowberry tart with a glass of apple cider arrives and tucks in with gusto. He has a surpisingly large appetite for someone on the thin side. He nods in agreement at Alfrey's comments as to the advantages. "It also seems - on the face of it - more attractive than just 60gp between us. But I'd like to see if first. Hopefully it's not in such a bad state of repair making it uninhabitable. I'd also like to make sure it doesn't come with strings attached, like having to pay high taxes and so on, which might make it not so viable. We also need to check if it's close to the town. Whether or not we agree to help the sheriff and her people against the bandits, we have made an enemy today. Word will get back to Ralavaz about what we've done. If we were all in a house in the middle of nowhere we could be easy targets for the Night Blades." He takes another mouthful of his baked hare with garlic. "Which leads on to whether we decide to help the sheriff. As far as I can see, 'the die is cast'. We've already crossed the Night Blades and we may as well follow through now. The sheriff also told us that they could reward us with some of their magic treasures from Imperial days."

To Kaa, Amanda smiles a knowing smile, the kind a grandmother gives a favorite grandchild. "Oh I'm sure you're a fierce one! But I wouldn't want to get on any of your bad sides. Really appreciate your work. You know, if it helps keep you in town a little longer I'd be happy to cook you two square meals a day, no charge at all for as long as your fierceness is keeping this town safe. Bath too, free of chare!"

As Alfrey discusses the house, Amanda can't help but give her two cents, even if he wasn't talking to her.

"The long run is the key there, my friend. Wont' be any buyers for quite some time. People are only leaving this beautiful town these days. I've been here for twenty odd years, and this is the worst I've seen things. Not to discourage you, that place is lovely. Used to belong to the Whitesparow family, bless their souls. But don't take it as an investment or you'll be disappointed."
Feb 26, 2021 11:50 pm
Hearing Amanda's comments, he looks up, "Thank you for your generous offer." Then he asks, "You say you've been here over twenty years and this is the worst it's been. When did things go wrong? What happened?"

UPD: The pink woman picked up two apples from the barrel, and, biting one crunchy fruit fed another one to the horse. Here you are, Butterscotch! End of the timey-wimey stuff

I'll be back for you later, boy,- Euphoria says to the stallion, petting his mane.

She then leaves the stable, enters the shop, picks up the ink pen, gives it to Gavun, and says: Sell me this ink pen.
As Gavun agrees and names the price, she looks disappointed, and replies: No, it's not how it's done. Come on, didn't you hear the tale of The Wolf of Fence Boulevard? Arianne, sell me this ink pen, show him how it's done!

When the tiefling is done fooling around she buys a whip, a set of manacles, a tent, a grappling hook, to a total of 8 gp.

Mr. Greyhorn calls out "We all call him Butterscotch! If you want to feed him, there's some apples in the barrel back yonder."

Amanda listens carefully to everything Hilmar is saying. "Taxes? No, nothing like that here. But we do raise money from time to time. Maybe somebody's house burns down everyone chips what they can afford to help out. But that's just part of being part of a community."

"As for the 'die is cast' I think you have the right of it. Ralavaz isn't going to take being crossed lightly, and if he sees the town gaining strength he might decide to attack while he still has the advantage. You might be able to use that against him. But maybe just 'get him first' is the simpler plan. The simpler the better usually."

It's clear Amanda is more worldly and knowledgeable than your average innkeeper.
Feb 27, 2021 5:24 am
Thank you! The tiefling takes the mug into both hands and takes a sip. Is Evershaddy a tavern?

If this Ralavaz guy turns out to be at least half as dangerous as people say he is,- Euphoria spoke with a full mouth, munching on a baked hare leg,- I'm gonna be really surprised.

Maybe you're right but didn't those bandits say that the Night Blades were burned alive when they caught them last time? I hope that's not normal. Maybe it's just a wild tale but maybe it was the only way to deal with Ralavaz's magic?

"But on the serious topics, I don't know much about what the house is worth, let's look but I leave the decision to you" he waves at all of them. "As for the drama-bandit, you think that mask magic works on us too? Do we have to face him blindfolded or earfolded or something?"

[ +- ] Pitrio says
He smiles at the term 'drama-bandit' Kaa uses to describe Ralavaz. "Hmm, that's a good point. Hopefully not. The sheriff described the prisoners as 'not the smartest' of people, so maybe they were easier to beguile. But it wouldn't do to make assumptions," he responds, making a mental note to make enquiries about this.

"No wild tale, I'm ashamed to say. That's what happened. Back then, there was a different sheriff. Smooth talker, convinced everyone he was the Hope's salvation, but in the end he turned out to be no better than the bandits. When he burned the Night Blades alive, we recalled his badge but he didn't go peacefully. It was Ruth Willowmane that drove him out of town. That's one tough lady, I'll tell you."

"Are you kidding? Before the Arkadia fell, the baths would would hold fifty at a time and there'd be a line up to get in next! Head on down when you're ready, it's just down those stairs over yonder. Take a light with you, it's pretty dark down there. This whole building is built on top of a natural cave system with heated mineral pools, you see. The builders of this place constructed nice housings around the big ones so you can sit comfortably on the edge or dive right in."

"Watch out, there is one pool that is completely drained at the moment. Weirdest thing, I never seen that happen before. The whole pool just emptied out one day, probably blocked up underneath. Too bad, it was the nicest of the pools! I might have to pay somebody to go down in there and unplug it!"

THE HOT SPRINGS
Those you who venture down the old wooden stairs find themselves in a place of natural beauty. The air smells strongly of sulfur and clay, and the steam fills your lungs. It's been a while since you've had the amenities of civilization!

Sure enough, on of the pools is roped off with an 'out of order sign' and is bone dry. It is fascinating to see the geothermal vent from which the water comes at the bottom, as round as any every made by an Arkasian engineer.

Naeris is at the back of the group heading to the spring and she stops before they reach the steps down to this pool. She says to Amanda ‘Is it okay if I have a look around?’

(Assuming Amanda says this is okay) Naeris studies the cavern. She wasn't expecting this space hiding in the middle of town and she wants to make sure she understands it. She walks around the cavern to check that there are no passages or rooms that weren’t immediately visible. She takes a quick look at the vent (but from a distance - not actually entering the empty pool because she's suspicious of it). She looks at the forms of the rocks and observes the colour and smell of the water.
OOC:
Len - if there's no new information you don't need to respond. This is mostly role-play but she would check for passages.
After this, since she's not keen on caves or this water, which she sees as impure, she's thinking of leaving. She asks Amanda ‘Does anyone live at the keep over yonder?’

Hilmar removes his outer clothing, placing it in his pack, away from any edge. He descends the stairs, entering the water gradually, getting used to the temperature and testing out the depth. Then he will swim around the rim of the pool and float on his back. After about 15 mins he will get out, find a secluded area to change into his spare clothes and wait for the others where they had their meal.
While waiting, he will ask Amanda, "When did things start to go wrong in Hope, causing people to leave and so on? What happened?"

After taking a moment to remove and store his armor in a safe place, well away from the moisture of the spring, Alfrey descends into the cave. He admires the otherworldly beauty of the place before following his companions’ lead and spending some time in the pool. He does not linger in the water, preferring to focus on getting himself clean, having grown sick of all the dust and grime accumulated over the long journey.

After completing a satisfactory bath, he continues to take in the cave, walking from end to end, not looking for anything in particular but enjoying the sights and sounds of such a unique place.

"Well whoops I might be in trouble then" Kaa laughs.

At the spring he happily inhales the steamy air, and takes down all his clothes (well, that one, the dragon necklace stays on tho), and jumps into the pool. He also dives, swims around a bit, does a water somersault, and then goes to laze at the edge.

I am sure you will get to enjoy a lot of forest walks when we go hunting for that bandit chief, Naeris. Why do you ignore the hot springs though? Does elvenkind have a distaste for water?,- the tiefling pondered, lazily leaning on the wooden edge next to the bugbear.

Amanda tells Naeris that she's welcome to take a look around. When she investigates the drained pool, Naeris peers into the shaft at the bottom of the basin, and sees deep horizontal groves cut into the stone shaft that would function like a ladder. Looking into the tunnel, her keen elven eyes see that the shaft goes down about 30 feet and end in some kind of a room. What little light pentrates to the base is glinting off of something metal, barely visible even to Naeris's incredible night vision.

Amanda is happy to chat with anyone who comes by her door, as you might expect from an innkeeper with no guests.

To Naeris she explains that nobody lives in the keep anymore. The sons and daughters of the noble family that once lived there (the Whitesparrow family) died in the many wars at the end of the Arkasian Empire, and the Lord and Lady left for the safety of a surviving city state. They technically still own the castle but haven't been heard from in fifteen or so years. Amanda also informs you that Sheriff Willowmane has the keys the front gate but doesn't go there except in dire emergencies, where the keep is used for protection.

To Hilmar, Amanda explains that it's been a slow, steady slide. Various threats have whittled away the strength of Hope over the years - organized bandits in search of loot, slave traders looking for bodies to trade in the city states, and most deadly of all, the Shanka sometimes come down from the hills hellbent on destruction. This has especially been punishing on Hope's young men and women, the most able-bodied defenders. With Deepfathom Well closed up and the Dwarven mines abandoned, not a lot of people come up this way anymore - just the occasional soul looking to escape the tyranny of the city-states and who are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and fight for a good life.

Apparently there is renewed interest from the south in investing in Deepfathom Well, but Amanda is worried that this will bring more trouble than it's worth.

To everyone who enters the hot springs - the water is truly amazing! There might be medicinal properties to the water, because you find your blisters and aching muscles from the long journey healed in the heat. The steam clears your mind and makes you feel young again. Those prone to daydreaming might experience pleasant nostalgic thoughts filtering through your mind.
OOC:
Anyone who bathes in the pool can regain 1d6 hp! Also, you are better able to fend off mental attacks for the remainder of the day - you have advantage saving throws against charm and mind control effects. You can only benefit from this once per day. Nobody's hurt, so you haven't used it up the healing for today, but you can take the mental defense benefit.

Jusika says:
Why do you ignore the hot springs though? Does elvenkind have a distaste for water?
My kin have a love of water as a rule. Water is the lifeblood of the forest and many things live in or near it. There is a great reedy pond near my home which I love because it's home to many waterfowl and fish and creatures of all kinds but I don't bathe in it often because the water is murky and stagnant and I don't belong in it. The streams nearby are clear and pure and I love listening to their quiet voices but they are too cold to bathe in except on the hottest days. This place is different, though. I can see and smell that the water is impure and I wonder what could live in it? The cavern feels earthy and enclosing, and even the air feels suffocating and has a foul smell. I wish I could enjoy it as you do but I think I will soon go out for some fresh air.

Extolling the virtues of the hot spring he responds, "I hope we can encourage you to try a dip in the hot spring, even if not today. The rest of us have found it most agreeable. I'm convinced it has healing properties and enhances some of your mental faculties. I experienced a similar one back home. I have read studies of similar waters and their properties." He was about to explain about the works of Albionus Persomenal, when he remembered that Naeris had explored the cave when he was floating on his back. "Did you see anything interesting in the cave or the dried-up pool?"
Mar 2, 2021 2:08 am
These pools and caverns are unlike anything I have seen, so they're interesting to me. The earth has a life of its own that I don't truly understand but there was nothing in the other pools that you don't see around you except in the dry pool. There the vent was much deeper than I expected and there is another cavern at the bottom of it. There are also grooves in the side of the vent that look to have been carved into it and I guess are used to get down into the vent for maintenance.

After a pause, she says 'It's not my business but I don't like not knowing what's down there, though I like the thought of going down there to look even less.'

When Euphoria was done with swimming and enjoying the hot spring, she came up the wooden stairs, then squeezed and twisted the furry brush at the tip of her tail as well as her wet undergarments. I would like to find out what's in that cave under the pool. But first, we should get those magic items we were promised,- Euphoria said with a yawn as she was getting herself dressed. I'm going to the inn to sleep. Someone should check if there are any ghosts coming out at night before buying it,- she chuckled. See you in the morning folks!

"Cold streams are nice too, but differently. Wakes you up like nothing else."

"That cavern below the pool sounds very interesting and cool. Will have to check one day." Kaa mumbles in his relaxation.

"So early? Good night pinkie! You know, my mother is good with ghosts, she is a shaman. A bit far if we would need her tho, but I am sure dragon boy is good too!" he says with closed eyes. He will stay in the waters for a long while unless disturbed, so the others can check the house out without him. Later on he will take a stroll around the settlement just wandering and exploring before returning to the inn for dinner and to pick a room. He prefers one that is breezy with windows facing to daylight.

After the conversation about the vent but (presumably) long before Euphoria finishes bathing, Naeris says 'Well, I'm going for a walk around the town.' This is the point where she asks about the keep (wherever she finds Amanda). She then walks slowly down the road in the direction of the keep, alert while in the town and then, assuming nothing happens and she meets no-one, relaxing and walking at a normal pace as the houses give way to farms.
OOC:
I'll write this assuming it's uneventful but, if something happens at some point, I'll delete the rest and post about subsequent actions later. I'm also assuming the image of the town is approximately accurate as a map.
She goes across to the stream and has a look there, then returns to the road. She doesn't go up to the keep, only the base of the hill it's on. If it looks like settlement has ended before reaching that hill, she walks across country to the next road and returns along that. Otherwise, she'd just return by the same road, returning to the inn to see what the others are doing.

[ +- ] Hilmar's queston about the hand
He will also ask Amanda directions to the farmhouse referred to by the sheriff - assuming she knows which one the sheriff meant.

Hilmar will then go to look at the farmhouse and look at it from all sides.
OOC:
Unless Amanda warns him not to go near the stone hand he will go for a walk to the centre of the village and look at the hand.
He will walk around the perimeter of the excavation, taking care not to go too near the edge. He will draw a picture of it with his charcoal and draw a plan, with notes as to the depth of the pit around it, positions of ladders and dimensions of the hand and the pit etc. After that he will return to the inn.

Hilmar says:
During the conversation with Amanda he says, "I noticed the huge stone hand, with five fingers and it looks like peple have been carrying out an excavation around it. What do you know about it?"
"Ah yes, The Hand. Did you notice it has six fingers? It's been around here longer than the town, probably long before the Empire. Nobody that I've ever met knows its past. But, we're grateful to it. The Shanka are afraid of it, we think, and that's why they rarely attack. It' become a bit of a good luck symbol for us."

"I'm not sure who tried to excavate it, that was before my time here. Rumour has it the poor chaps who tried to dig it out got down to the elbow, but then their heads got all full of nightmares and they skedaddled out of town. What a bunch of idiots, getting spooked by a statue."

"Hey, you'll find this fun - there's an old wives' tale that tells about a boy a hundred years ago who found a door in the wrist. Inside, He followed a staircase that led down below the surface and reached a chamber that contained a portal to another world. Can you imagine? People used to draw the stairs on the town maps and charge tourists a few silvers for it, you know, back when we actually had tourists. Gods, that is so long ago now!"

"Anyway, the only thing you really need to know about The Hand is that the Evershady Tavern is built right below it. Owned by yours truly! Got to be the best collection of wine anywhere in the north."

When Hilmar goes to sketch The Hand, he does indeed see that some of the excavation pits go quite far down, maybe even a hundred feet by your best reckoning. Rope ladders and such still remain, probably needed to fish out the occasional drunk from the Evershady who doesn't mind their step and ends up in the hole.

Kaa's and Naeris's wanderings are pleasant and uneventful. You cross paths with a few townsfolk, and they already know who you are.

Naeris runs into Rose's mother, Daisy, who is nothing but grateful that you brought her back home. She says she's never met an elf before and she's not sure what kind of food you like, but she's got a basket of raspberry muffins for you and your teammates.

Kaa is approached by a group of small children playing with a ball (really, it's a stuffed cow's stomach). They're a little nervous approaching you at first, but can't resist their curiosity to met such a different looking person. They chatter about how cool your axe and they ask you if you're going to chop off Ralavaz's head with it.

Hilmar (and anyone who wants to join) eventually find their way at the farmhouse. It is solidly-built two-story farmhouse, brightly colored. Seems like there's room enough to house five comfortably, with common areas, and even internal plumbing! A small cat comes up to you purrs as you look at the place. You suspect it might be his home too.

Alfrey returns from the cave in time to hear Amanda’s story about the stone hand. "That’s fascinating. The six fingers, the unknown origin, the effect on the Shanka — color me curious."

When Hilmar goes to investigate the hand, Alfrey tags along. "It has to be magic, don’t you think?" He asks the wizard. "Unless stone hands are just inherently frightening to Shanka for some reason, that must be a power that it has."

They examine the hand together, then while Hilmar is engrossed in his sketching, Alfrey decides to test his hypothesis. His hands and his lips begin to move and form the gestures and words characteristic of spell-casting. Concentrating deeply, he returns his now magically-enhanced gaze to the hand, hoping to see a hint of what power it might have — if any.
OOC:
Casting detect magic — That’s my last spell slot for the day, hopefully I won’t need another :)
Once the pair are content with their findings, they make their way to the farmhouse. "Oh my — it’s beautiful! Not what I was expecting for an abandoned building." He turns his attention to the cat upon hearing its meow. "And hello to you too, little one." He crouches down and extends his hand to see if it will come to him.
OOC:

Kaa smiles at the kids, sits down so he is not towering above them so much.

"Its a big axe ain't it? Try lifting it!" he lets them play with it. "Try not to chop off your fingers tho ..."

At Ralavaz question he acts out how he is such a scary boogeyman, and he is going to sneak up on Ralavaz and eat him. He is a big man, he needs a lot to eat so the bandit might be enough for lunch tomorrow. If they stick around he keeps on storytelling, with some funny and some gruesome tales due to his raw manner. He might idly play around with the ball meanwhile (if it belongs to athletics or acrobatics he should be quite decent, with sleight of hand less so) and asks what they play.

Naeris is gracious towards Rose's mother "I'm glad she wasn't hurt in the fight" and thanks her for the muffins.

He listens with rapt attention at Amanda's comments about the hand with six digits. "How amazing! A prehistoric monument, that has a deterrent effect on the Shanka, a legend about a secret door and a portal to another world and what's more has an excellent tavern beneath it. What's not to like as they say?" He was intending to visit it but now is more keen than ever.
OOC:
In the light of this and Alfrey's post he will visit the hand first.

Before settling down to his sketches he examines the area of the wrist, looking to see if he can see any grooves or lines where a door might be. He knocks the stone at certain points.

Hilmar looks up from his charcoal sketch and notes on parchment to look at the hand, before making adjustments to his drawings, when he sees Alfrey completing the verbal and manual components for a spell of some kind. I have an Identify spell, but it is not one of the ones I have prepared today. I never anticipated using an Identify spell on anything quite so large, but then why not?"

At some point when most people have returned to the inn, Naeris compares notes with the others and learns about the visit to the hand and well but says that it's probably best to leave discussions until tomorrow. She says that she's happy to take on the farmhouse if the party likes it. She takes a room at the inn but then leaves after dark and heads to a place by the river, not too far from the town but where there's some cover. Listening to the sound of the river she goes into a trance for half the night and stays there afterwards for a few more hours because it's been a long day. Nearer the dawn, she wanders across the fields near the town, restfully observing nature before returning to her room as the sun rises.

The kids love your act, and hang off every word of the story. At some point one of the older boys tells you that he followed a Night Blade back to their hideout on a dare. They're up in Lonely Tower, due northeast of the town, he swears by it. He hasn't told anyone yet because he didn't want to get into trouble for doing such a dangerous thing, but he figures if you kill them with your axe he won't be in so much trouble! He also says mentions that he saw the guy pour a yellow liquid on his feet before he entered a big patch of strangleroot, which grows all around the tower. "Strangleroot is bad news, sometimes the horses wander off and get caught something awful in a patch. But the Night Blade walked right through it like it was a patch of daisies! I wonder if it was magic?!"

They also tell you they like to play football and invite you to play in their game sometime soon. "You can be on my team!" says absolutely everyone.

There is a river - folks around here call it "Firefly Stream" - that runs north to south, just on the eastern border of the town. There is a bridge across on a road that runs east from the town and leads up to Deepfathom well. It's not a heavily forested area but there is no doubt many small copses of trees especially near the river

Hilmar searches quite carefully but sees no sign of a door or groove, and the stone feels solid at every point. It's possible that the old stories were just that - wild stories. Or, maybe you're missing something.
Mike says:

OOC:
Great question! If the spell component has a gold value, then you will need to provide it. However, the spell does not consume it, so you can use the same pearl over and over again once you find one. Pearls are quite common in jewelry in this world, so it won't be hard to find one.

Back at the stone hand, Alfrey and Hilmar continue their discussion:
Mike says:
"Highly likely, a magic of some kind, from what we've heard. Amanda was saying that those people excavating it, got as far as the elbow before they suffered some sort of turmoil and fled. I wonder if there is a complete body of stone beneath. I'd like a drink in that tavern as well sometime. Perhaps there is even some truth in that tale of the door in the wrist."
"A full body would be a monument for the ages, no doubt! What manner of body could it be I wonder? I don’t know of any six-fingered race." His eyes grow large as a new thought occurs to him, "But perhaps if that ‘portal to another world’ business is true, we might not be dealing with a race from our reality!" He pauses for a moment then chuckles nervously, "Just a thought. I’m sure it’s nothing so outlandish."
Mike says:
Hilmar looks up from his charcoal sketch and notes on parchment to look at the hand, before making adjustments to his drawings, when he sees Alfrey completing the verbal and manual components for a spell of some kind. He watches not wanting to disturb him. When he has finished he says, "Excellent idea, my friend. Did you get any sense of anything? I have an Identify spell, but it is not one of the ones I have prepared today. I never anticipated using an Identify spell on anything quite so large, but then why not?"
Alfrey’s face falls. "Nothing at all. I’m certain I cast the detection spell correctly, but the hand appeared completely mundane." He stares at the stone monolith for a short time with his hands on his hips. "Nonetheless, I am still suspicious. If your magic can uncover the secrets in this place — well, I would be more than curious what you find."

Later at the farmhouse, Alfrey takes a walk around the place, peeking into each room and admiring the condition of the home and its amenities. As he and Hilmar complete their informal inspection, the two share their thoughts.
Mike says:
"I'm beginning to really like this place - I mean the town of Hope in general. The people so far have been friendly and generous. Hopefully our companions will want to move in. Then there was Amanda's offer of free food and use of the hot spring while we're helping the sheriff deal with the bandits. I think we should see the sheriff tomorrow, take on the house and agree to help her in the struggle against the bandits. What's your view?"
"Oh, I agree entirely. I think you were correct about what you said earlier — that we’re likely to be facing the Night Blades one way or the other — but even putting that aside, I want to help these people. They deserve some better fortune than they’ve been getting lately. And as for the house, I don’t think I can pass up such a lovely place. I’m all for taking it." At this point Alfrey's attention turns to the cat as it rolls about in the grass. "I suppose this fellow ought to have a name if we're going to be sharing a house with him, though I can't quite say what it should be just yet."

When they tell him what football is about, he says he will be the keeper and just lies down in front of the goal, blocking most of it like that and he just slothishly swats down the ball if it goes higher.

When he does meet the others, either in the evening or morning, he will ask Hilmar what he thinks of the yellow shoe liquid, making the same joke with it as before.
OOC:
I don't know if we'll roleplay those meetings out or skip ahead soon, so better be safe like that. If more encounters or talks happen then great, if not then I am fine with finishing the day.
