I'll keep my roll as a Discern Realities roll and suffer the complication later on, just because that seems like the most interesting way to go ;)

So looking for: What happened here recently, what is about to happen, and what here is useful/valuable to us
Falteo perches on Bonepipes shoulder after the trap door is thrown open, trying to get a good look at whatever lies within.

The trapdoor to the lower deck of the Flying Remorhaz cracks as it opens, frost that accumulated along the edges breaking as Bonepipe opens it wide.

The stairs lead down to the dark underbelly of the ship, but, fortunately, it seems this area has not yet been flooded by seawater, though certainly the cargo hold of the ship, down one level further, is likely almost completely submerged.

Peering down, the group can see that this lower deck has two main areas, the captain's quarters - closed and locked - and the general crew area and oft-used supplies. Most things in this general storage area are thrown into disarray, likely from when the ship crashed, and the three can see that there is a cannon fallen on it's side among the boxes of rations. Quite a bit of firepower for such a small ship.

Falteo's falcon-sharp eyes scan the area, taking in the little details. The thing that catches his eye, immediately, is the ice-statue of a sailor nearly entirely hidden and partially crushed by the overturned cannon. Upon more focused examination, Teo is shocked to see that the face of the man is familiar!

It brings him back those 10 days ago, when he was purchasing food for his village. A man he hadn't seen in town before was selling frozen fruits and vegetables from islands at incredibly cheap prices - produce that ended up being contaminated with the disease! The druid knew he would never forget that man's face, and here it is again - frozen in ice like so many from his village.
OOC:
What happened here recently? The crew of the Flying Remorhaz smuggled contaminated goods which lead to the spread of the Frigid Woe. Unfortunately, they were not immune to the disease, and died shortly after (while also fighting this giant fish - very unlucky).
Teo realizes, also, that this ship and its crew might have been the first to come in contact with the Woe, and that there might be some record of it somewhere.
OOC:
What here is useful/valuable to us? The Captain's Log of the ship's travel should be in the captain's room, which should hold more details of where they first encountered the Woe. On a different note: it may be difficult (but not impossible) to take the cannon, but since the area isn't flooded, the gunpower for it should still be good.
As Byron and Bonepipe take any steps closer to the trapdoor, Teo can see and feel the slight shifts of the ship's balance on the sea-ice that could not be entirely attributed to the waves. He gets the feeling that the crashed ship is not so solidly entombed in this ice that reckless movement won't cause problems.
OOC:
What is about to happen? More of a 'could possibly/is likely' to happen: Teo can sense that moving too recklessly will cause the ship to tip fully into the ocean.
OOC:
What will you do?

"Cannon," Byron whispers—there doesn’t seem to be anyone to disturb, but she feels as though she ought to—and she jabs a clawed finger in its direction.

"We’ll probably find some lead on board. And you thought my fireworks were loud," she grins.

Not having noticed the frozen man yet, she suggests the Symphony’s crew lift the boxes of rations, and then fixes her eyes on the shut door. Intriguing… Byron takes a step in its direction.

"Looks like the skipper's bunk. I bet it'll be locked. Gimme room, I'll break it down."
OOC:
Unless Teo shares his realization from the Discern Realities, it might not occur to Bonepipe to look for the captain's log. Nor notice the precariousness of the wreck's position.

Might be safer for Byron to unmake the lock than for Bonepipe to kick that door. ;-)

"You’ve already got room, at least until this thing passes. As for the door, I don’t doubt you could smash it off its hinges, Chilly, but I think this needs a delicate touch."
OOC:
I also think her bond to him—showing him the meaning of sacrifice—implies she’s not necessarily going to stand for that sort of recklessness if it’s not for what she feels is a Good Reason. So she’s gonna intervene.
She gives him a pointed look, strolls up to the door, and rubs some heat into her hands.
OOC:
This is probably also the funny welding trick, but it does note in its description that to unmake might require a Defy Danger, particular in a scenario where safety is not on our side. D’you reckon that applies here, Data? I’ll note she has not even tried just opening it, lol, which is her own sort of recklessness…

Apologies for the late response! Hmmm - let's do a roll! You're heating up cold metal pretty quickly after all, it could potentially shatter rather than melt. Plus, it's always good to get more chances to gain X P.

Byron is not the most delicate flower in Exandria; she grits her teeth with the focus it requires not to just blow the whole thing to bits—especially important when there’s gunpowder unaccounted for.

Love the foreshadowing there. Since this is the roll for her last action, I'll still move things along, but anyone feel free to jump in.
As Byron's hands heat up the cold metal, she misjudges the temperature and the whole doorknob and lock shatter an break into hot metal pieces that fly back into the supply area and also into the captain's quarters. The group hears the sound of glass breaking in the captain's quarters, but Byron's thoughts immediately go to the gunpower that must be somewhere near the cannon behind her.

The burning piece of metal clatters against the back of the ship, falling right beside the cannon, still red-hot.
OOC:
I do have Byron still technically succeed - the door's open now - but at a bigger cost than normal. (I couldn't really see it NOT working, just being more dangerous). But, Byron gets to mark XP!

Falteo flies down off Bonepipe's shoulder and begins searching the room, distracted by the sudden realization of the body staring back at him encased in ice and realization that they are in a lot of danger if they make too much of a ruckus. Just as he was beginning to turn to face Byron and Bonepipe, the red-hot piece of metal comes sliding across the floor towards him and the gunpowder surrounding them.

Teo immediately shifts back to his elven form and takes out his shillelagh, trying to knock the piece of metal away from the cannon and the gunpowder. He calls out to the others, "Be careful! This ship is one small shift away from sinking into the sea." After attempting to move the piece of metal away from the gunpowder, he remains still, trying to get a read on if all of that sudden movement has caused any shifting or swaying of the ship itself, and waiting to tell the others of the body and the captain's log idea until after he's assessed the situation.
OOC:
Not sure if a roll is needed in order to push the metal away, or if we really need to at all, but doing so just in case. If no roll needed and ship is all good, then assume Teo told Byron and Bonepipe about the body and the captain's log (just in case I don't post fast enough ;)

Defend should work fine! Not exactly what the move does, but basically tossing the thing away.
The ship is good for now, and we'll go forward assuming Teo tells Bonepipe and Byron that there is a Woe-frozen body over by the cannons and that the captain's log should be in that room.
The broken door to the captain's quarters swings open on its hinges, revealing the room beyond. The room reveals two more Woe-frozen corpses - two to be exact.

One stood at the desk - a large worn-leather book, open, is caught between his frozen hand and the hardwood of the desk. The man appeared to have succumbed to the illness in the middle of ripping out and burning several pages, though the lantern he was using for that purpose has long burned out, the page ashes scattered.

The other poor soul appeared to have lost his battle against the Woe while lifting a chest from under one of the shelves, still crouched down with his arms around it.

The room itself is a mess - books and broken pieces of ship models scattered in the crash - but gives off the impression of having been quite nicely organized before then. Along with the desk and chest, there is a bed, a few shelves which probably used to hold the books and ship models, and what appears to be a the jawbone of a large shark mounted on the wall.

Byron lets out a low whistle that terms to steam as it hits the air.

"If Teo’s right I guess we want that book, eh?" she sighs, "but I’m not touching that poor bastard."

She casts an eye over the room thoughtfully, then crosses to the jawbone and yanks it from the wall. As carefully as she can she attempts to push the book from the statue’s grasp…

That works, so you don't need to roll for it!
Byron is able to carefully push the frozen man away from the desk using the shark jaw - the man's hand dragging across the pages until finally slipping free of the book. Getting a good look at the pages now, she sees that it does appear to be the ship's log and previous navigation notes, though several of the pages have been ripped out already.

Gonna continue on with a slight bit more information about the chest.
While getting the log book was easy enough, the chest the other frozen crewman was holding was another story. It's held tight between his frozen arms and torso, so opening or removing the chest would require either breaking the box, or the frozen corpse itself.

Looking closely, you can see one of the pieces of metal from the exploded doorknob embedded in the side of the chest.
OOC:
Since it's just the three of them there at the moment, they'll need to decide what to try to take from the ship. The Ship's Log has been gotten by Byron - the chest, cannon, and/or gunpowder remains. When your characters are ready to head back to the Symphony, let me know!

Bonepipe remedies that with a swift axe-kick on the chest. The wooden chest, not the corpse's chest, though those two things are stuck together so maybe it doesn't matter.
OOC:
Uh oh! 😅

I'm following along and ready to jump back in whenever. I'll wait to post for Mance until everyone comes back or if an emergency unfolds. Or does it make sense for Mance to be concerned how long it is taking and checks for signs of changes in weather (discern realities). I imagine the weather here is quite volatile so you don't want to dilly dally in these straits.

Teo respons to Byron from the other room, still doing his best to avoid coming too close to her. "Me neither. I would make sure to not touch anything in here with your skin directly, including that book and chest. The Woe is strong here. As useful as the things here might be, I worry we are bringing sickness back with us."

Teo walks towards the hatch leading back up out of the ship, signaling that he is ready to go whenever the other two are.
Jan 25, 2022 12:32 am
"Think I don’t know that?" she mutters performatively for Bonepipe to hear but at a volume too low for Teo to catch it.

Nevertheless, she does inch a bit further from the rest of the party as she considers the cannon. And there is a lot to consider: weight, firepower, usefulness…

She errs on the side of leaving it alone, though, as the harpoon and the elf-orca did most of the heavy lifting. No reason to risk this thing plunging into the depths and kicking up floes of Frigid Woe.

Byron returns to the ship, leaving the barbarian to deal with the aftermath of his attack on the chest.

I'm going to assume Byron gets the book, but only touches the part the frozen body wasn't touching? Let me know if she left it instead though!
When Teo emerges to the top deck of the ship, the red bird is waiting for him, perched on the ships railing. The bird regards Teo with solemn black eyes, fathomless in their depths. It opens its beak, and a shrill note rings out, a discordant sounds that yet seems to make sense to the druid.

[Corruption. A dark mockery of nature. You must bring an end to it, or it will bring an end to us all.]

Byron begins heading up right after Teo, not waiting to see the results of Bonepipe's epic axe-kick - though she does hear it. The sound of breaking wood and... glass?

As Bonepipe's spiked boot splits easily though the chest, he notices too late the glass vials of glistening crystal stone within - that, and the ice, almost a living thing, lashing out in great furious spikes from where the chest used to be.
OOC:
Bonepipe, roll Defy Danger to avoid getting spiked by this very suspicious ice.
The red-bird flies away without another word, and as Teo and Byron go over to the RAFT OF CHAMPINS to prepare to head back, they notice it has a new occupant. A large octopus has made a very comfortable nest out of the blankets and furs that lined the inside of the rowboat. It reaches out with one orange tentacles, and loosens the knot tying the small boat to the ship.
OOC:
He's that complication we were all waiting for. Did you guess an octopus got stuck to the bottom of your boat and decided to move in?Because, if so, you are very good at guessing things.
Mance spies Teo and Byron coming back onto deck, but doesn't see Bonepipe. It does seem like they're taking an unusually long time to get back. What are they doing?
