Chapter 2

Ha'aroo shares his reservation to letting another outside their group have a watch at night. And refuses an outsider (outside the 6 vouched by Syndra) has a shift by themselves. Ha'aroo puts his name back in the hat for navigator, "Im still ok with being the navagator and leading the group. As I mentioned before we left Im decent at surviving in the wild im just not trained in it or anything."

Ha'aroo reassured Bruno that "it was very noble of you to try and save Nebula but since there is a language barrier Nebula thought you were trying to run off into the jungle and if you are by yourself in the jungle she could not keep you safe. So she was trying to save you by pulling you back when you started running. So please if you feel in danger please slowly group around the person farthest away from the threat unless you see everyone running. If everyone is running then run with us ok?"

Ha'aroo agrees with Sharagwyn, Travers and Jim that a normal pace would be good and is good to head out in the rain if everyone is ready.

Ha'aroo also shares with Nebula that Bruno said that "he was trying to run off to protect you. He was scared not just for himself but for you."

"I think if the river is as calm as it was before that it would be good to cross now. It looks like we are approaching the undead territory on this side of the river according to the map." he shares with the group.
OOC:
I think we should go southwest but if not then south
and in response to Travers dont we need 4 watches to make it 2 hours well we could just make it 3 watches at 3 hours each. That way there is always at least two people on each watch in case something happens to the only person on watch.

After having to leave Jim's tent, Shara feels terrible; the weight of their dire combat finally dawns on her. She had tried to be a hero to the others, but all she could do was panic and worsen the situation—she was almost responsible for at least one death. Certainly, they were all lucky to be alive, but she did mourn a budding friendship that had instantly gone sour. She would apologize to Jim soon, but right now it was best to fade into the background.
OOC:
Great character development. Love to see it.

1. Shara is fine with any navigator, but adds that she isn't the best at it so it should be someone else over her
2. She also suggests that the party should wait out the storm
3. Normal or slow, not fast
May 4, 2022 11:24 pm
Jim greatly favors walking along the river as opposed to trying to cross it. Lead on Ha'aroo. Pausing for the storm is good too. We aren't in a race.

Day 7 overview
While only Sharagwyn is worried about navigation in the storm party continue their route. Storm continue all day long, but you manage to keep going. You do not meet anyone or see anything special. By the evening storm breaks and your visibility improves.
Ha'aroo who is leading you suddenly realize that you are following tributary instead of the main branch and have little idea which way you have been moving all day long. Since you had to swim over several tributary and change direction to follow ever changing river path you do not know where are you on the map right now
OOC:
You are effectively lost! If the survival check I do on behalf of navigator will be a success tomorrow, it will mean you have found your location on the map.

Day 8 begins
Night is quite. You wake up. You need to decide either you stay where you are and spend day trying to understand your location or move.

[ooc]Regardless of weather you move or not your chances to figure out your actual location are the same.
Decisions:
Ha'aroo - do you share the fact that you are lost with the party? Do you decide to stay or move (i.e.south-west regardless of your actual location)
Everyone - any actions you take if learn about the fact that you are lost?

OOC:
Jim suggest we move to the west and find the river. With the sun coming up, finding west isn't a problem. And we surely didn't cross the river so we should hit it.
May 5, 2022 7:37 pm
Since we had to swim over a few tributary's throughout the trip it is possible that we swam over the river thinking it was just a triburary and may already be west of the river. Ha'aroo votes for either staying put and finding where we are or heading southwest since no matter what position we are we will need to travel southwest to get to the camp.

OOC:
@GeneCortess if we talk OOC you can't go west on hexagon. You have to choose one of 6 directions: N, NE, SE, S, SW, SE
I would also like to stress out that you don't know which side of river you are. I was trying to narrate it
GreyWord says:
you had to swim over several tributary and change direction to follow ever changing river path you do not know where are you on the map right now
if I failed to narrate it please just accept the mechanical implication is - moved into a random direction ( I rolled 1d6) and you have no idea where you are.
Also don't forget this is raining even in normal day and you don't normally see the sun in Chult. Ever.

Again, if players feel this aspect of ToA is not fun and vote to remove it - I'm totally fine to disregard the "Navigation" chapter from module
description - there are enough of the other types of challenges in the game.

Until I have majority of players vote to remove it from this game I'm running it as written.

Pacan looks around at the trees. They all look - the same. she thinks to herself, exasperatedly. She never had this issue back home. Everything here was just so foreign. The water wound around and bent in the weirdest ways. The trees were gnarled and warped. Nothing was right. Even her morning meditations didn't work as well as she would have liked.

Let's stay put for a bit, and do some thinking. We can track the sun, or what hazy ball amounts as the sun, and get an idea of where we are. Better than walking in a bloody circle, yeah? she says, a faint touch of exasperation tinging her voice. Even if we have to climb a tree to do it. It would be worth it.
OOC:
Mechanically speaking, I think it's fine to leave the navigation part in. It's not perfectly "fun" in play by post, but I think the exposure to the jungle, consuming days against the death curse, yada yada all adds something to the mounting pressures to solve it and such. I vote to keep it. The "frustration" it causes the characters is worth it in terms of suspense and development.
May 5, 2022 9:18 pm
Well we are lost. But the morning sun will tell us which way is west. I think that is best thing to do. It is what I would do. And obviously it will take us away from the undead. Jim puts in his thoughts.
OOC:
Hex wise that would be SW.

Travers quiet after the rain of the day before speaks up "if we could figure out which way the main river is that would help but I have no idea which way it is" he shrugs and sits on a log glancing around the jungle
May 5, 2022 10:16 pm
Nebula gives Bruno the donkey an extra bit of feed, feeling guilty for calling him stubborn
"The stars too can be useful, but.. I think it best to travel during the day. We'd be at a disadvantage in the dark
May 5, 2022 10:40 pm
Jim smiles at Nebula. Well a midnight stroll would probably not a fine thought for traveling.
May 6, 2022 12:20 am
"I agree. I have a light spell if we are forced to use it, but traveling at night is more likely to make things worse." Shara decides not to make her voice overly heard. The others have already suggested following the sun, which would have been her suggestion as well.

I fully agree with this. My vote is to keep it in.

Day 8 overview
Party to struggle agree on course of actions. Pacan gets up on the tree and tells that she see a hill to the North. It would be easier to figure out your location from a hill, but it is North and Jim don't like that idea. After longer argues party finally decides abandon the river and move North and get up the hill. This time they are extra careful not not get lost or run into any wild animals and manage to get up the hill by mid-day. A beautiful view available from the tallest trees of the hill allow you do discover that you are only few miles away from the main river as tributary were flowing almost along the main one. Party spend the rest of the day traveling back to main river.
OOC:
When I rolled 1d6 for random direction it was exactly SW so you are just were you wanted to be. But spent this day discovering that and I am moving to the next day with next post
Day 9 morning
You wake up (take LR if needed) without any events during the night, ready to move on. Weather is as usual and Ha'aroo navigates you perfectly fine.

OOC:

A creature, including the target, can use its action to detach the stirge -> this requires no dice roll, you succeed at it automatically, but spend an action on it.
Once detached it could be attacked without disadvantage. Striges that missed their first attack and are not attached could also be attacked now without disadvantage. i.e. there is a strige next to Pacan and that strige is not attached and could be attacked without disadvantage. Not sure about JIm's AC be he probably also has his strige not attached
