A Gathering Storm

Jul 9, 2022 3:33 am
The rain comes down like an iron sheet, hard enough to sting the eyes. Still it isn't enough to wipe the stink from Thistle Hold. While not even a city, the town holds 6,000 permanent residents, but nearly 10,000 dwell there at any given time. The press of so many is cloying, and the peltingly harsh rain cuts that. Some.

In the shadow of the Beacon lies a large, circular plaza surrounded by taverns and dives, including the Salons of Symbaroum (the notorious and varied pleasure house). If one were to name one single place as the most dangerous in town, it would have to be the block neighboring the Toad's Square. More deaths occur there than in the rest of Thistle Hold combined, and it is in close vicinity to the Beacon's foundation that most of the town's shady affairs take place - affairs that often go overboard since active town guards aren't seen in the district.
[ +- ] The Beacon
Of course, it is in Toad's Square that you find yourselves tonight. You're headed for The Infested Bole, a seedy tavern with a reputation for dour business. A place of drinking oneself to oblivion, rather than making friends. Unfortunately, the dogged pursuit of oblivion is not what draws you here, but instead, rumor of a new exploration contract, just today. A contract would come with an Explorer's License, a somewhat expensive writ to allow one to enter the forest of Davokar for a specific and limited purpose -- the Queen guards the forest's secrets carefully. Anyone who wishes to travel the woods without risking hefty fines or the loss of fingers/hands there is no alternative but to come up with the sum dictated by the authorities.

When you enter The Infested Bole, few eyes turn to the door. A damp and smoky atmosphere obscures much, and an Ambrian barkeep leans on a keg, trying to coax a few murky drops from the dregs into a stained, wooden tankard. You're each looking for a woman named Revora.
Describe yourselves as you enter the tavern, and include two things: 1) the name of the person who gave you a hint of this contract, and 2) what hope you have for the expedition.

Lothar hated the big city, too many people living in a tiny hovel. The land lost the natural scent of leaves and earth, and smelled more like a shit pit lain too long without lime. Man was not meant to live in such oppressive means. Ambrians thought they were safer here, but life had taught the hunter a long history of the truth. A man was twice as likely to be shanked or stolen from here than in the forests. It was just better hidden. Out there, your fate was all about your skill and your motivation. Here, it was hate mired by the pleasantries.

Lothar pushed through the throng. Not that he hated the "civilized folks". Nah, they were just cowed milk-sops in comparison to the free folk. He would have preferred trading in one of the smaller villages. Yet, despite the freedom of the forest, he needed licenses to ply his trade, and he needed another before the coming season. Of course, in this place, he could come by one less than honest measure, but Lothar preferred to try to abide by the customs. He liked having all of his fingers.

He eyes the dirty sign swinging next to the door The Infested Bole. Terrible name, but it was the right place. As he enters, the interior leaves a lot to be desired. Davion was right about this place, a miserable little piss pot. He stays silent as several strangers turn to eye the man with the muddy cloak, noticing the tufts of wolf's fur as he brings the hood down. Lothar rubs the scar on the right side of his face before ruffling the strands of his fading brown hair, trying to shake the disgust from his mind. Lothar just hoped this Revora would be able to supply what he needed. The extra coin wouldn't hurt as well.

Kvarek made his way through the streets of Thistle Hold, the press and stink reminded him of the battlefield. Minus the ever-present blade swinging at his head, mostly. Not that he was complaining, there were few places in the world that he'd been that would be remotely referred to as 'clean'. Actually, clean was probably one of the few things so fanciful, he couldn't actually picture it.

The Infested Bole, seriously, find me a tree in Davokar that wasn't infested with something. But, again, it wasn't the worst place he'd chanced to find work. Shebla said someone name Revora was planning an expedition and anyone with enough coin or influence to secure an Explorers license should be worth following. Shebla was an interesting one, she wasn't half as good in the sack as her information was. But it was the cheapest way to get to that information as her other rates were ridiculous.

Kvarek ducked his head as he entered the bar. Scanning the room he was looking for this Revora as his first step to retiring from this nasty life.

Oria preferred to take her chances in the woods rather than remain any longer in the city that was slowly killing her spirit. She couldn't breathe very well in its stifling, stinky air if you could even call it air. She was certain her nagging cough was because of it. She never had occasion to go to Toad's square let alone the Infested Bole whose name didn't do its reputation justice. No, from what she had heard it was far worse. Yet here she found herself, her cape of soft fur tightly wrapped around her slender, lithe frame as if to fend off the evil that lay within. She had been grateful to her old friend Jari who had told her of the contract in the queen's woods. He alone knew how desperate she was to escape the cloying atmosphere she called home.

As disgusting as the nauseating stink was in the tavern, she was grateful for the thick air that made it hard to make out the details of the patrons inside. She did not need to be robbed at knifepoint and relieved of her valuable cloak before she even received her quest. However, she could be very persuasive and could probably talk her way out of most situations. It didn't hurt either that she had a lethal weapon under her fancy cloak.

This was her chance to change her life. Now all she had to do was find Revora.

As the rain soaked into his burgundy and gold trimmed robes; Ansel was reminded why this wretched place needs the light of Prios. Thistle Hold is familiar to Ansel. Yet he rarely passes through Toad's Square. As he looks for the sign indicating The Infested Bole; a fleeting thought comes to mind Perhaps it'd do good to spread the light of Prios here.

Ansel enters the sodden tavern. He slowly scans the tavern, not hesitating to lock eyes with any who stare. His purpose is greater than guiding these poor souls to Prios. There is much work to do to bring Prios Glory. There is more to uncover in the forest of Davokar that may serve the Church. It's a good thing Garek is not in the hierarchy of the Church. That way he's not being manipulated here through some scheme from other members of the Church.

Yes, this looks like a place Gerek would visit. Now Ansel just needs to find Revora and enable him to bring more glory to Prios. Or perhaps to uncover an unknown truth...

Lothar shifts his feet. Might as well get this over with... He overcomes his aversion, and shuffles toward the man tending the bar. It was getting more crowded by the moment. "Hey, lookin' for Revora." He tosses an orteg on the counter, as an offer. Money always made things easier. "You seen her about?" His ascent is thick marking him as one of the freefolk.

As Oria threaded her way through the haze of unwashed bodies toward the bar she heard a voice asking for Revora. Sidling up beside the voice and taking stock of the man belonging to it she noticed his aversion to the crowd was similar to hers and the proferred coin signaled that perhaps he was a man of means.

"Revora seems to be a popular woman today," she said in a low voice. "I too seek her out."
Jul 10, 2022 2:41 pm
"Lovely," he responds flatly before even looking over to the voice. But his demeanor shifts as he puts a face to the words. She was... There was something different about her, but Lothar couldn't put his finger on it. He obviously wouldn't be going alone, and of course this could be Revora herself so it made sense to be civil. He subtly checks for his purse, just in case. "So it would seem." His voice is quieter, realizing how much it carried even with the noise of the patrons.
Jul 10, 2022 4:20 pm
Kvarek smiled at the exchange at the bar. Of course, any expedition would require many bodies. Especially one into Davokar, that wood tends to extract the life from these sorts of endeavors. Quite literally, more often than not.

Kvarek leaned back against the wall near the door, waiting to see who appeared. As there was no need to announce himself too early.
Jul 10, 2022 5:56 pm
Garek was correct with regards to expecting many to catch wind of this contract. Ansel casually listens to the two at the bar while heading straight for the bar keep. Placing his elbow on the unkempt wood he leans so that his body is facing towards the two. "I too seek Revora. Looks like I am in the right place. Ansel sizes them up. Judging what their faith and worth.
Jul 11, 2022 2:41 am
The barkeep disappears the coin, and places the keg back on its stand. With his eyes, you see him look to a closed door to the back room, barely visible in the smoky dinge. "In there," he says, his voice raspy as he drains the tankard of dregs. "You want ale?"
Jul 11, 2022 2:47 am
"No thanks." Lothar declines the offer. He looks over this third seeker, taking in his vestments, letting out a partial sigh. This was going to get more complicated. He abandons the coin on the bar, and points toward the back room. "I guess... lead on, priest."

Oria declines the offer as well. She wants nothing clouding her judgment on this day.

A priest! she thinks as she walks haughtily behind him and the man with the scar. He'll not convince me to believe. He can lead me to the back room but that's all the leading he will be doing for me!
Jul 11, 2022 4:48 am
"Not at this time." Ansel nods his head at the barkeep in thanks. Likewise He nods to Lothar in acknowledgement while offering a brief glance to the lithe woman, but says nothing. He smooths out his robes and straightens to his full 6"2' height. Looks like Garek's information might be accurate. Ansel heads to make his way through the closed door in the back room.
Jul 11, 2022 1:37 pm
Seeing the others have gained some insight to Revora's location. Kvarek falls in behind the group as they head for the backroom. From the looks of the three in front of him, none were comfortable with this location. That was probably a good sign, city folk tended to fair poorer in the Wood than most.

When Ansel enters the room, he sees a sturdy woman on perhaps thirty years, sitting in the far chair. A rough cut rectangular table made of lengthwise beams held together from underneath is surrounded by a half dozen chairs. The room isn't overly large, and getting past occupied chairs may require squeezing against the wooden walls.

The woman looks up, an eyebrow raising as she takes in Ansel's accoutrements of faith. She peers around him as Lothar, Oria and Kvarek follow in.

"Who sent you?"

Not having a full view of the room occupants with the priest and the man with the scar in front of her, Oria slides along the wall as she looks for a good vantage point to view the proceedings.

"I was informed by my friend, Jari if you must know. Is it not good enough that I am here?"

Her haughty air was disrupted by a short coughing fit, which did not serve to inspire confidence in her abilities.

"And fresh air. The other reason I am here. Fresh forest air."
Jul 12, 2022 5:05 pm
Lothar gives a deep chuckle almost like a cough, before clearing his throat. He knew he liked this woman. Has a spine and some sense.
Jul 12, 2022 5:13 pm
"Dearest Bart,

I'm sorry to learn of the loss of your Master, it came as some surprise. But I must keep this short - time is of the essence. There is a Queen's Explorer's license to be had to enter Davokar! I know your heart and mind, young whelp. I imagine you can smell the herbs of the forest and no doubt you've played out conversations with that place's barbarian witches many time in your young and unfocussed head.

Make your way to Thistle Hold with all haste. Once there, head to the Infested Bole in Toad's Square. You will find it in the shadow of the Beacon. Keep your wits about you, though. This is a dangerous place. You must find a woman called Revora. I will try and meet you in Thistle Hold if the gods and circumstance allow it, but more than anything, do not miss out on this opportunity.

Yours,
Master Vernam"

The novice Wizard finished reading the parchment once more, and thurst it back into a pocket in his robe. Then, squinting across the driving rain, he looked at the sign and mouthed its name silently to himself - Infested Bole. Bartalom paused for a moment, as if on a threshold. He looked around him. How the huddled, teeming, masses of this miasmic hole seemed to contrast with him - bent over as if life was a weight they bore on their shoulders; squat and stout, especially when compared to his tall and slender frame. With a deep breath, the novice wizard drew himself up to the full height of that frame and entered the Inn...
Jul 12, 2022 5:20 pm
... The moist, clammy, heat was the first thing that Bartalom noticed, followed by the stares of curious eyes which he studiously avoided acknowledging. Purposively, the wizard made a straight as path as possible towards the barkeep, dancing around the swaying ale-supping bodies with more cunning than dexterity.

"Excuse me, Bar-keep? Where might one find the Lady Revora?"
Jul 12, 2022 5:34 pm
The barkeep stares at Bartalom, then points at the back room, but scoffs at one word. "Lady. Hah!"
Jul 12, 2022 6:51 pm
Bartalom raises an eyebrow at the Barkeep’s comment, but thanks him politely and makes his way to the back room. He knocks gently on the door but there is no response and so he tries the handle, the door opens and he hears the words, "... Fresh forest air."

"Oh! I’m terribly sorry. The barkeep said I might find Lady Revora in this room."
Jul 12, 2022 7:03 pm
Kvarek eased into a chair, "Shebla. "
Jul 12, 2022 8:47 pm
Garek wasn't the only one giving out information on this contract. Something to think about. Ansel thinks as he clumsily bumps into the rickety chairs as he makes room for those behind him. "Garek Tahn sent me. Lumberer and true believer. I am Ansel." As he announces his name he nods his head slowly to her as a slight sign of respect.
Jul 12, 2022 8:54 pm
Lothar looks to the newcomer, noting his dress and deciding, "Yep, this id be the place." before making a note of Ansel, and the confirmation of his observations.

She grumps a little. "Then close the door and listen close. An urgent situation has come up. We need a team to head into the Dark Forest and rescue a group that has run into trouble. This will be fast travel, a guide provided, it will pay well, and it's licensed by the Queen. I'll tell you nothing more until you each swear to secrecy. If word gets out that you blabbed about any of this, you'll be blackballed from Thistle Hold at the very least and likely executed for treason."

She leans back and takes each of your measure. "Agree and hear more, or leave, now's the time to decide."
Jul 13, 2022 4:27 pm
Oria's eyes scan the wizard as he makes his apologies. Was his polite demeanor genuine she wondered? Time would tell, and a wizard would surely be an asset in their quest.

"I'm here, aren't I? You have my word to speak about of none of this."
Jul 13, 2022 8:57 pm
Kvarek smiles, urgency pays well. This might be better than he expected.

"My word is as good as your currency, there'll be no sharing of this secret."
Jul 13, 2022 9:26 pm
Although confused by the numbers, and the demeanours, of those gathered around who he supposed to be Revora. the novice wizard has little hesitation in agreeing to the oath - "I also, so swear!"
Jul 13, 2022 9:38 pm
Lothar wonders who they will be rescuing, and why it would have a queen's eye. Maybe this one might not be a good idea. He bites at the corner of his lip in contemplation before looking to the others who had already sworn. He was the last one, aside from the priest. "Not a word from me." a flick of blood from his lip landed on his crossed hand. An ill omen. He pushed the sign aside and looked to this Revora.

Ansel isn't too surprised to hear the consequences, but it still gave him anxiety. He glances at those around him swear so quickly without much of a thought. If I commit to secrecy to just hear her out; I am committing to this expedition no matter what information Revora gives. I was hoping to have more information before committing. Will this bring Prios glory? Will I learn more about Prios' will? Ansel coughs slightly after the late newcomer commits so hastily. "I too swear."

She nods, meeting each of your gazes as you swear. "Good. Good. Thank you."

She sips from her drink, a large tankard of some foul looking bitter ale that smells poorly made and stored with even less care. "This must be kept secret or other factions will move. The Queen's position is precarious is some matters, and if her enemies sense an opportunity, they'll press. She would respond, and it is no exaggeration that war could break out." She looks at Kvarek in particular, and he needs no reminder that the last war cost thousands of barbarian lives, and countless more lives wasted in slave labour building the Ambrian city of Yndaros.

She pulls out several sheet of parchment as she talks, sorting through them. "This noble, let's call him Wagner, went into forest in search of an old ruin, as many do. He was properly authorized," she holds up a parchment, showing a blank Explorer's License. "After five days, his guide returned, babbling about dangers in the ruin. Wagner had been taken by things inside, by 'arms of darkness and hate' and that the guide has barely survived the slaughter of the goblins among them. Elves, as far as we can tell, and not the little ones you see from the ones sometimes, not elflings, but proper elves. Ancient and terrible."

"An Explorer's License, for each of you, for a month. If you bring Wagner back, alive, these will be extended to a year. A thaler each in advance to outfit ten more, each, on your return with Wagner, or what's left of him if you're too late." Eleven thaler, that's a proper knight's wage for five days, a sellsword's wage for months. You could live without any other income for months, if you lived modestly.

"We put out the call this morning, and we've wasted enough time as it is. You'd leave tonight."
Jul 14, 2022 4:31 am
The huntsman smiled at the thought of that year extension. An even better arrangement than he had hoped for. His smile faded as the urgency of Revora's plan was pushed before morn. Traveling at night was dangerous, but near to this area, maybe less so. It was not like Lothar did not hunt into the night on occasion. And it was a lot of money. It'll be interesting to see how the others cope. This may allow me to take some measure of my companions. "I'm gud with that." he finally said.

The novice wizard stares intently at the adventurers as each volunteers to undertake the nocturnal journey. As useless as he feels personally to face alone whatever terrors Davokar might hold, with these magnificent creatures as company he feels certain that they will at least make the light of a first morning and he will get to behold the mysterious floral bounty of that much vaunted space.

As you approach the main gate fortuitously arriving together, the rain has let up but there's is still a chill moistness to the air that promises a miserable journey tonight.

When you get to the gate, you first hear a commotion. When enter the space beside the gate, through the haze of the light rain and dim light, there seems to be more people than you'd expect. You see five cloaked figures (gray-black cloaks that appear to be festooned with feathers), and three more besides. Two of the cloakwearers are standing above two more figures, probably guards who are lying on the ground. Three other cloak wearers have surrounded a lithe figure of small stature.

Violence appears imminent. What do you do?
Jul 20, 2022 3:19 pm
The wizard stops abruptly in his tracks... something is evidently, not right... he glances to his left and to his right and recognises faces from earlier - and to no one of them in particular he says, "Something has gone wrong, it looks like there may be two dead or injured guards. Violence isn't my business, but I can be of use in a fight. Are any of you warriors?"
Jul 20, 2022 4:39 pm
I can swing a sword," Oria says modestly as the slide of metal against sheath is heard.

Her long-bladed sword has a short cross guard and a fishtail-style jeweled pommel, being narrow at the base and flaring out in width as it rises. A family heirloom it had served her well so far.

Oria stands ready for action and looks forward to displaying her prowess, especially to the good-looking one with the scar.

Bartaloum and Kvarek attacked, Ansel acted, Oria and Lothar are after them...

The two by the gate draw weapons, pulling bows from their backs, uncovering the delicate bowstrings and fitting arrows to fire.

The remaining one standing by the smaller person stabs at them... but the figure twists away from the thrust. The cloaked figure darts backward, grabbing his buddy who clambers to his feet and they start to withdraw toward the gate.

As the cloaked person grabbed their supine companion off the ground and started toward the gate, Oria took this opportunity to rush and attack the figure with the knife. He quickly checks his gear, a small larder bag, a canteen, and several weapons. "Long way to goes now. Many dangers in Davokar." His toothy smile indicates menace, likely directed to whatever might accost you.

Oria feels that there is more to the goblin than meets the eyes and endeavors to watch him keenly. Gathering her cloak more closely to her body as if that could keep the stench away she walks on into the bleakness outside the walls noticing that at least the city smells have abated even if the muddy rain has not.

"What kind of menaces would those be exactly so that we might be more prepared?"

Lothar thought back for the stories the tribe told in their legends. 'Shadowbeasts that were nearly invisible until they struck, spellplagued corpses of those who dabbled with magic too much, and the like.' He held such ominous tales from the group, rationalizing there was not reason to spook them - not that he'd seen anything in the forest before. 'Bloody knife ears be a more ta 'hreat to us, any how.'

Instead he pushed for them to move on. He felt exposed here. "If you weren't gonna move us at nigh', we'd ben bette' off in town, Modek."

Oria's eyes appear fierce and her expression unyielding, and the wizard stammers for a response that will not form. Instead, he turns his gaze forward and then glances to either side as if to demonstrate a renewed vigilance

You trudge through the forest along a wide trail, but it quickly narrows as if being swallowed by the dark press of trees. Wide branches scrape your arms, threaten to sweep your hats away. Surely the forest is more used that this? Modek presses on, his small stature giving him a bit more space.

Modek
He stops suddenly, holding a hand up and looking at you in fear. He holds a hand to his mouth and points at the first person, then looks around, listening. You hear a crashing far away, but it seems to be going farther. Modek nods and then hurries off on his increasingly invisible trail, but he's increasingly making less noise than he had been, downright creeping along, as he leads you over roots and fallen trees on some game path.

He stops at points at some hanging humanoid figures. "Elfs no want us go further."

Oria is fearful but she tries hard not to show it.

Why is the goblin going so cautiously and slowly, she wonders, and how can he even see the trail?

The sight of the hanging figures stops her dead though.

"You think?" she asks sarcastically glaring at the elf when he states the obvious.

Kvarek readies his sword and shield and does a slow circle ignoring the hanging bodies. As often as not, they are meant as a distraction as much as a warning. "Eyes out, those bodies are the least dangerous thing you can stare at. Whatever put 'em there could be watching."
Aug 22, 2022 9:27 pm
"I was under the assumption they didn't even want to go this far." Prios guide me. Ansel looks around looking for some kind of ambush. Then his eyes slowly look at the hanging figures.

Ansel walks close to Kvarek. and says "I do hope it's just a warning."

The forest was a wonder to the eyes of a curious young wizard. Bartalom examined each and every unfamiliar growth of the forest as best he could without falling too far behind the rest of the party, taking samplings of each with the intent of practising his alchemical art upon them when opportunity might allow. But as the forest path narrowed, a sense of forbading dragged Bartalom out of his reverie.

Note: Modek the guide is a goblin, rather than an elf.

Ansel examines the bodies and he's certain they are human, but there is something wrong with them, too. It's hard to tell, as the crows have been at them, but ... something. They are dressed as Ambrians, that part is clear.

Bartalom's herb gathering is successful, but he finds the forest growing more and more oppressive the farther he gets from the others. Strange sounds, creaking, clicking, breathing, just behind the next tree, or the bush he is looking at.
Aug 24, 2022 8:33 pm
Lothar notices Bartalom's skill with herbs, something that the huntsman had ever had the time to learn. He stays a bit close watching the herbcraft and serving as a protector in case the distracted wizard might fall prey to ambush. Unnerved by the forest's ambience, he suggests, "May'ep we ought to make back with tha others, Bartalom." It was rare for Lothar to be so moved by the mood of the wildlands, but this foreboding had his hairs twitch under his cloak.

The wizard is grateful for the presence of Lothar, and foresaking the bushes and the bark he jogs to his side. "Aye, indeed, Lothar. The atmosphere of the forest has started to feel heavy. But look at these..", Bartolom says excitedly holding out the strange hued herbs he has been collecting
Aug 24, 2022 8:52 pm

Something is going on and I'd rather not be surprised as it could prove our undoing. Don't you hear the peculiar sounds? I hear breathing too. These are not normal woods noises.

Modek
"Darkling. Hunters, eaters of flesh. Don't care if beast or elf or human. All flesh they crave. Even trolls. Lucky just one. Not stay here is best."

Onward, along paths faint and illused. The forest grows more and more oppressive the farther you get from Thistle Hold. Strange sounds, creaking, clicking, breathing, just behind the next tree, or the bush you look at. Nothing there, at least that what you can see in the full dark. No sky, no stars above.

Modek stops and gathers you all, and fingers a broken branch on the side of the 'trail'. "A root cave, dry." He points in the direction of the branch. "Must see if anything else camps inside first, before goes crawlings in and --" he claps his hands loudly together and giggles. "Bad day."

He gestures, clearly wanting one of the armored people to go check. You can see where the bush has been moved aside by someone passing. Not a trail, but not unmarked either.

Kvarek and Ansel along the path, and after fifteen paces, find a tree with large a large, exposed root cluster. Underneath the tree is a depression, likely naturally caused, perhaps dug out by successive animals in years past. The hole is dark even in the darkness of the night, and Kvarek senses instinctively that there is some threat here. Is it the smell of a predator, or a nameless malevolence that merely radiates its hate? In either event, he steps inside.

A nameless rush, the slam of many tiny beasts into his shield, and suddenly he's wrapped in a swarm of something fel.

Once you've knocked them down, Ansel can take time to use his holy fire, or you can use torches, to burn them. They don't regenerate from that damage. Meanwhile the others can keep them wounded. "Yes, yes, sleep here."

You sweep out the dead creatures and then gather inside. The hollow is big enough for all of you to lay your bags down, and you light a fire near the entrance, in an old firepit, lined with rocks.

The nice passes, despite a wearying strain in the air for anyone awake, as if the woods are watching you, and slowly getting closer. Still, when you all awake, you've each gotten some rest.

Modek leads you on into the woods and it is near the end of the day, perhaps an hour before sunset, when you depart the main animal trail and find an old stone ruin. A small entryway leads down into a hidden gloom.

Modek points. "There. Lordling went down there." The goblin shivers, afraid to go down again.

Not thrilled at laying her head down among dead creatures, the hollow eventually becomes habitable and the fire is appreciated. Oria lays out her sleeping roll and finds that she is exhausted to the bone and instantly falls asleep. Fully refreshed the next day she is ready to meet whatever the day has for them and it looks like this ruin might be hiding the lordling. Unsheathing her jeweled sword she prepares for the worst.

Unless there is some diplomacy / intimidation style roll I'll enact leadership. Actions: Witch Hammer as a free action and Leadership adept nearest spearman.

Sorry for the delay, I should have marked the last post as unread.
Recap: Lothar acted first, pinged an arrow off someone. The elves positioned themselves, with the archers firing warning shots and the spearmen advancing. The spearmen are now one movement away, so Kvarek can reach one. Ansel is directing fire on one of the spearmen, so 1d4 bonuses to damage on that one.

Bartalom, Orla, and Kvarek are up.

Two archers and two spearmen were on either side of the clearing.

To one side, a spearman has been cleaved in twain, and Oria and Kvarek threaten the other. The remaining one jabs at Oria, trying to pierce her armor. Oria, roll under your Defense at -3, or take 4 damage (less your armor which you can roll).

The other two spearmen on the other side, angle toward Ansel and Bartalom, and close up the distance, in melee distance (no attack this round).

The archers on one side fire at Kvarek Kvarek, roll under your Defense at -3, or take 5 damage (less your armor which you can roll). Do that twice.

The archers on the other side, one fires at Bartalom. Bartalom, roll under your Defense at -3, or take 5 damage (less your armor which you can roll). The other tries to get up but fails to do so.

Nov 12, 2022 10:25 pm
"Let them go. Maybe we will be pleasantly surprised when they don't return," Oria is ready for a rest from battle. Her arms and legs ache and hurt from the exertion of combat.
Nov 12, 2022 10:28 pm
As soon as the last of the knife-eared bandits fade into the forest's shadow, Lothar lets the tension of his bowstring, but slow walks forward to their fallen. Soon he is scavenging arrows that he deems suitable from the archer's quivers.

The old stone ruin. A small entryway leads down into a hidden gloom.

Modek
Modek emerges from the brush and points, and repeats what he said earlier. "There. Lordling went down there." The goblin shivers, afraid to go down again.

https://i.imgur.com/3cxMhJu.png

The ruin contains a tunnel leading downward into the ground, curving to the left and with stairlike risers. The smell of foetid earth rises from the tunnel, but it would be quite defensible compared to the open ground and the elven archers.
Nov 17, 2022 3:13 am
Oria sighs loudly, her muscles aching in protest at the idea of more fighting. But it is the way.

She turns to the others. "Are we ready to go down through that tunnel that stinks like death? The bandits were just a warm-up."
Nov 17, 2022 3:19 am
"The elves were probably trying to do us favor, by preventing us from entering this tomb. Alas, our fortunes lie beneath."

Kvarek takes stock of his gear and self, lifts his shield and enters.
Nov 21, 2022 9:27 pm
"I'll lead the way", says Batalom as he makes his way to the tunnel
Nov 21, 2022 10:07 pm
Satisfied with his stock of arrows, Lothar slings his bow across his back, and walks back to collect his discarded staff. "Berter be frakin' wordh it by ma account." He was questioning their bargained price for all this trouble. He mutters to himself, quietly, as he begins following in behind the others, less concern upon their ears ahearin' and more to what hell lies within. "Goram golbins, bloody knife-ears, and a haute noble ta boot, if dat is we find em. This gotta be da worst way ta get me license e'er did."
Nov 22, 2022 3:42 pm
Bartalom has no easy task. The lighting is dim, the ground hard, but the interior of the ruin proceeds around a corner and down into the depths. By torchlight, you proceed.

The stone hallway circles down, stone and mortar hold back a layer of gravel, and roots stick through even hard stone. The way down is cold and a descent from the faint veneer of man, quickly not so much built as carved from bare rock. Chill and dray, and then, a mausoleum. Here you find remnants of debris, bones from a meal, a broken wine bottle, and human waste in a corner. The men you follow must have come here.

https://i.imgur.com/QdDjAQT.png

A groan permeates your bones, until you realize that it is reverberating as if from rock itself. Farther on down the passage, was that a flash of light? Or reflection of your torch on something glassy, or metal?
Nov 22, 2022 3:59 pm
"What a surprise, we have company it seems," Oria says in a low voice stating the obvious as she draws her two-handed sword, realizing that her arms didn't get half the rest they needed.
Nov 22, 2022 10:42 pm
"Is anybody here?, the wizard cries out trying to keep his voice even, "we come in peace", he adds and then looks towards Oria.
Nov 23, 2022 3:14 am
Silent as the grave, as they say, save for the beating of your own hearts and the draw of your own breath.
Nov 26, 2022 1:50 am
Bartalom smiles broadly and looks at the party, "this forest puts one one edge. Perhaps we should rest a while?"
Nov 26, 2022 4:10 pm
You are not alone in that, Bartalom but we will have time to rest later. We still need to press on. I'd be careful though and look for the ambush that surely awaits us. We heard that groan so either someone is a captive down there or there's a party waiting to kill us all.

She feels tired and injured but the adrenaline was providing a little extra energy.
Nov 26, 2022 5:35 pm
You cautiously advance toward the flash you saw. In the grim darkness, the very earth groaning overhead as if yearning to bury you under its terrible weight, you pass behind the sepulchre and into more ancient rock tunnels. What hands carved these, and how long ago? What fiendish intelligence dug deep into slumbering Davokar? What foolishness brought that noble down here?

At the end of the corridor, it splits left and right in a classic Y-shape. Bartalom's eye is drawn to movement on the right, a tail of something disappearing from view. Something long like a crocodile, perhaps.
Nov 30, 2022 1:35 am
Oria begins to feel claustrophobic but brushes it away and tells herself she's being silly. She notices Bartalom look intently at something while her eyes see nothing yet.

"What do you see, Bartalom? she asks as she slides her sword from its sheath.
Nov 30, 2022 8:46 pm
"There’s a fork in the path, but…. Wait… movement.. on the right. Some sort of very large reptile, I think. What do we do?
Dec 1, 2022 12:58 pm
"We investigate. Shields up and move out. If there's something to the right, I'd rather it be in front of us."

Kvarek readies himself to move with the group.
Dec 1, 2022 2:09 pm
"Agreed." Lothar readies his staff and takes a step forward, ready to defend against this reptile.
Dec 1, 2022 4:10 pm
"Alright then let's get to it." She hopes they can take a well-deserved rest after this is all over.
Dec 2, 2022 1:24 am
When you get to the intersetion and look to the right, the creature has moved away from you and around the next corner. As you approach that corner, weapons on the ready, you hear it scratching at rock. You don't see it yet, but the claws on stone grate at your ears.

Peaking around the next corner, you see a large blur against the stone, scraping as if trying to dig it's way out through stone. It's natural camouflage and large (larger than a man) and reptilian body tell Kvarek that it is a marlit, a prized creature hunted by his barbarian clan whenever they can. Even dead, a cape made from its skin and scales maintains some of its adaptive camouflage properties, making it ideal for sneaking and hunting. However, Kvarek also knows that they are both forest creatures, not prone to being underground, and pack hunters.
Dec 2, 2022 12:12 pm
Kvarek sucks in a low hiss upon seeing the creature. "A marlit, down here. This is not good for either of us. These creatures are forest hunters, we'd fair better if we could show it the door rather than tangle in such tight quarters."
Dec 2, 2022 8:47 pm
Oria's face creases into a frown."Why is a marlit down here is the question we should be asking ourselves. We should be extra cautious. perhaps we can communicate with it somehow and ask it why it is here before we resort to violence."

Nevertheless her hand tightens on her sword.
Dec 2, 2022 8:53 pm
Lothar thinks about it for a minute, "Wouldn't dere be amore dan one? Marlit er pack hunters, ain't they?" He debates on the bow or the staff. There idea to heard the creature out might have some merit, of course, they could be walking headlong into a warren of sorts too. "Dat one you seen coud be lurin' us into 'n ambush."
