Character Creation & Leveling Discussion Board

Oct 8, 2022 10:21 am
As titled, this thread is for Character Creation & Leveling.

Talk about party makeup here.

Roll dice for hit points when you level up here (if you don't want to take the average HP for the level).

If any of you want to use DNDBeyond for character sheet creation or mechanics information for D&D 5e, use this campaign link: https://ddb.ac/campaigns/join/34367061815559038

I do ask that you submit your full character sheet here in Gamersplane, though. There is a lot of custom options available, but I don't have the time to build the homebrew for all of it in DNDBeyond.

I know there is a ton of lore and reading for this setting, and you can get lost in it, but I am not requiring you to, if that's not your thing (it is my thing, which is why I included so much stuff). If you need time to build characters, please take it. Do not feel pressured to automatically know what you want to do, if you need some time to think about it.

Thanks everyone, and have fun!

Wotan Ygg Ýjungr:

Wotan will be a Barbarian Zealot who is cunning and wiser than he seems, though completely insane.

On that tree, which no man knows, from what roots it runs. I gave myself as sacrifice unto myself, and hung wound my spear. For nine whole nights I did sleep upon that white and wind swept tree. Til runes they from the well of world's at last be known to me.

It is said that in the hands of a warrior, even a blade of grass or a twig is as good as a blade of dragonbone.

Seyala will be an Eladrin Fighter - Raider background - who has adopted a (mostly) human clan. I'm assuming we're all affiliated with the same clanfire.

I'm going to roll up a sorcerer, name TBD!

Right now I'm toying with an Elf (or maybe Half-Elf) Circle of Stars Druid. Though I'm eyeing the Starling kinship as well. I'll be digging into the lore and brainstorming a more concrete concept over the next few days.

I am going for the most loathsome character imaginable: A half-ooze druid. :)

Inspiration.

Ps. Probably moon druid so I won't clash with Ranimara.

Oooh! Circle of spores would be cool with that half-ooze concept, too.

Okay, I’ll stop!

Reading the pdf a little bit I'm thinking the concept/backstory I have in mind might work better as a warlock than as a sorc but I don't want to step on anyone's toes.

Is anyone else in the party rolling either a warlock or a sorc?

I second the thought of a disliked character. (Druid) He has really bad breath....

I'm going with a green dragonborn outlander druid. Starting Character is applied.

Ability Scores: You will either use point-buy or standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) with standard 5e racial ability scores or Tasha's rules around floating ability scores (basically, you choose which ability gets your +2 increase, and then you choose which other score gets your +1 increase, and the +1 cannot go to the ability associated with your +2 increase), or you can forego kinship ability score increases altogether and use this array of values for your ability scores: 16, 14, 14, 12, 12, 8.

Looking over the Kinships, I don't see Ability Score Increase on any of them. Is this an oversight? Is the Dragonborn Trait Ability Score Increase +2 STR and +1 CHA?

You can place the +2 and +1 wherever, as long as they are placed on different abilities.

I only included the language about using the race-specific boosts in case someone wanted the boost to the mountain dwarf (by the book they get +2 strength and +2 constitution) or a changeling from Eberron (where the language allows for them to bump the same ability all 3 times).

According to the PHB, though, yes it is +2 STR and +1 CHA.

I think the primal dragonborn doc had different ones boosted depending on the color, but quite frankly, I am of the opinion that you can place it in whichever stat you would like.

Are we all expected to be part of the same tribe?
Oct 9, 2022 9:17 am
Great Question! Short answer: no.

That being said, the adventure for the first group will have the people being brought together by a chieftain, who has sent emissaries to other nearby clans to aid in a matter of safety.

Every hunt needs a huntsman. Wotan is particularly skilled at chases. The thrill of killing a monster would be a great draw to him. Superstitious and insane Wotan would sell his battle magic. Selling blessings in the form of the resistance spell or guidance, accepting tribute in the forms of cups of water, fibers of cloth, scraps of leather, stones of sharpness, and bits of shiny.

Having a Dwarven weapon would be rad. I think he'd be a stone axe kinda guy. Like a monolithic stone axe. 8lbs of sharp stone. Thing of beauty that.

https://i.imgur.com/qdNQBax.jpg

Also Wotan desires the Monster's eyes and a substantial quantity of its blood.

Stekko (full name Stek-ko-rah-gon-du-ban) Gravelsnake is a Dwarf Chanter (Bard) of the Two-Axe clan.
Stekko is an odd dwarf. First of all, he is not particularly gifted on the phisical side. Second, he is not a direct guy; he prefers to talk in riddles, suggestions, allusions and has a talent in using words to uplift, tempt, destabilize or encourage his clan brothers.
He quickly became know in the clan for his useful tips and advices, that he gave freely to anyone who would ask for them... sadly they were often clouded in riddles or described in images. This, and the fact that he uses a Rattle as a musical instrument to aid his speech, earned him the nickname of "Gravelsnake".
Though his behavior usually unsettles most of the dwarves in the clan, Stekko is still respected (and feared) as a wise and cunning advisor: children often come to him to hear his stories, and sometimes adult dwarves too join the fireplace to hear the last weird adventure that he has heard.
Being the cousin of chieftain Skarna (Chieftain's kin background), he is sometimes summoned as an adviser when matters of importance arise. Altough he can be unpredictable and sometimes disappear for a few weeks in some weird travel, he is incredibly loyal to his clan and his kin and rigorously faithful to any law (being it a clan law, a natural law, a spiritual law, etc.) and breaks them with great care (and great fun).
Being of the Fireblood kind, Stekko loves to stay near the fire and usually all his stories and songs involves some kind of flame.
Motto: "The fires below recognise the fires above".

Personal ambitions, values and drives:
- Honor: I always try to keep a promise (although I am willing to interpret the meaning in a very broad way).
- Loyalty: I am loyal to my clan and my kin first, but friends are a precious treasure in a violent and brutal world.
- Survival: I usually avoid direct confrontations, if something is stupid don't expect me to follow you to our deaths.
- Wonder: I am easily distracted by beauty, especially that which comes from earth (magma, gems) or heaven (the night sky, the burning Sun).
- Trickery: Take me literally at your own risk.
- Curiosity and mistery: What does this do if I poke it? I MUST know what is hidden in that dark cave.

Character ties
- when he first heard of what happened to the clan by one of Skarna's messengers, while he was on one of his trips, he immediately turned back to answer the call, filled with sorrow and the fiery blood of vengeance;

I am open to anyone who would like to link his character in some ways with mine, here are some questions that might help:
- Is some of you my kin?
- Does some of you not respect my rank?
- Did I hire some of you to help with the hunt?
- Did we meet in one of my travels?
- Do I owe you my life? Or do you owe me yours?
- Were you tricked by me and now you seek to even the score?
- Were you helped by me and now you seek to return the favor?
- Did you make a pact of some kind with me?
- Did I tell your story around the fire of my clan?
- Do we share a secret?

Ah yes! I will say that each kinship has access to Common, plus an additional language of your choice, based on what makes sense for your character’s backstory.

Some clans are heterogeneous, and some are homogeneous, so you can decide if your language matches with your character’s kinship or not.

Oh, so are we playing with Common language? I seem to recall that in this setting the Common language does not yet exists, and so communication is quite a challenge between tribes. It's fine if we play with Common, it will make a lot of things waaaay easier, but it was interesting for once to think of how to handle the problem of communicating without a shared language. For me is fine either way.

That is a variant rule, and I considered doing that, but I guess I haven’t settled on it. I’ll open it up to you all.

How would you like to approach languages in this game? Multi Public

Standard 5e system (a Common trade language, and kinship-appropriate languages)
A variant, where Common is not available

Is a carved wooden piece that is about a man's arm's length and curved. It has sharpened obsidian stones inlaid along one side for a weapon of choice. Does this work? (It is a scimitar for druid in specks.)

His Common chat: "The gods are everywhere. The lands can heal."

Edit: I'm looking over spells like taking detect magic. How common is MAGIC.

Magic is as common here as in most boilerplate D&D settings, like the Foregotten Realms.

Divine magic typically comes from and out of the world, and there are various mechanisms to gain access to that magic (as evidenced by the divine and primal casters being at-odds with each other, on account of the gods taking and giving that magic out vs. druids and rangers taking it directly from the source).

Arcane magic, though, finds its sources more from the sea of stars and the darkness, and it comes into the world from the outside.

I know this is a bit esoterical, so I apologize for that. But I hope that gives some added color and context to Planegea as you build characters.

I'm thinking Bracus is an outsider that was accept in the clan. He is a healer that sports to many gods which is fake as he doesn't believe in any of them as he really is a druid, but he is really good about keep his image going as he likes to help the many. He is also very apt with his Herbalism Kit. He has all the VOO DOO and such down pat.

Being an outsider he has taveled alot. Multiple years worth (Background: Outsider)

The more treasured Scimitar is actually back when he was in with some Orc and he saved the Chieftan's son. It was gift. Orc is his chosen extra language. Orc always have treated him better.

So I had two ideas for a character, not sure which one to follow up on yet. I'd like to ask which one people would like to see more.

The first one is a Goat-Shifter Ascetic, Way of the Drunken Master. I thought that Drunken Master was very fitting because of the crucial importance of alcohol to early civilization (and civilization in general) and the way it has long been associated with mystical and religious practices - so I thought having a brewer + drinker + celebrant as a part of the party could be interesting! The Goat Shifter bit references satyrs in real-life myths and could result from a long-term association with a God or Spirit of Brewery and Alcohol. I also saw a UA specifically for Goat-Themed Shifters that looks pretty reasonable. Plus, I don't think anyone else is going for Ascetic, so I didn't want to step on anyone's toes.

The second idea was a Starling Swashbuckler - their Kinship description makes it seem appropriate that they would favor very flashy, very technical combat that feels incongruous with Planegean battles. I think it synchronizes well with their other Charisma-leaning descriptors. In terms of character, I think it would be amusing and provide many opportunities for exciting roleplay and motivations to drop an elegant sword princess from space into this neolithic landscape.

God-pretending god-hunting druid pack go!

My sheet is done.

Note - GM, this is my current submission. If there's anything you want to discuss or change, feel free.

"I honor you, Kassinu, many-horned Goat. My teeth are as yours that chew the grain; My hands as your hooves that mash the fruit; The fire as your eyes that sift the sweet from bitter; The jar as your stomach that ferments. Kassinu, mother of celebrants, far from your home I drink this, your blood. Don't let my spear splinter here, so far from the Clanfire."

Medheyg is an Ascetic of the isolated Goat clan, a small, isolated, otherwise not particularly remarkable tribe that dwells on a rough, rocky cliffside. Indeed, there would be little to make them stand out if not for their close bond with the local God, Kassinu of the Many Horns. The guidance of the great Goat deity has taught them much about the art of brewing and fermentation, with alcoholic beverages having become central to the clan’s social and spiritual lifestyles and, in many cases, has led to a profound impact on the clan’s bloodlines.

Marked from birth by the influence of the Mother of Celebrants, Medheyg would be taught the arts of hunting, gathering, and brewery, for which she demonstrated good aptitude. With no pressing need for a Shaman’s apprentice and no enemies needing Champions to slay, Medheyg chose to hone her skills as a brewer to honor the clan and her god through personal excellence. Ranging further than others in the search of new herbs, berries and other additives for drink required not only dedication but also the honing of skills for survival.

Despite her ranging, she grew frustrated at her limitations and attempted to commune with the Goat Goddess in a drunken bender. After waking up with just a headache the following morning, she concluded that her efforts were insufficient – a more potent drink was needed to fulfill her goals. Having left the clan to become a wanderer, Medheyg now intends to sharpen her skills and concoct a brew fit for Gods.

Character Tie - Medheyg has come after she heard that this mysterious creature might yield an ingredient that could be used to fashion a more potent brew.

- If anyone wishes to have a pre-existing connection with my character, please feel free to suggest anything.

@tibbius, I like the concept for your eladrin fighter. I did notice some gaps in the character sheet I would like you to address, and I had some questions about which WOTC source you are using for your eladrin (here's a link to the DNDBeyond Eladrin entry related to the Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse book: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/1026386-eladrin#EladrinTraits).

I notice that you are missing 1 skill from your fighter class, and your hit point maximum should be 12, not 10. Also, I missed the details about the equipment choices you are making related to your fighter class.

Let me know if you have questions or thoughts. I'll work with you, we will get your character sheet updated, and then I can accept the character afterwards.

@Khulod, the half-ooze druid is almost complete. I noticed that you used Standard array or point buy, but my custom array would give you a +2 bump in STR, and still allow for the other ability scores to remain the same. You can choose whichever you prefer, but having the extra strength means your guy can carry a little more.

Also, I noticed that you didn't make a choice related to your "Echoes of the Dam" racial feature. Go ahead and make that choice. I am good with the other elements of your character sheet.

@MrFaberJack, I am enjoying reviewing your backstory and character choices with Stekko. I did see that you had the standard dwarven features AND the primal dwarf features all included on your character sheet. I wanted to let you know that you get to choose the primal dwarf OR the standard dwarf, but not both.

Let me know when you make that decision, and I will review and approve.

The first 5 folks are almost ready to head on their adventure. Once they are approved, we should get started with the first group. The second group will be in a different adventure (I have a few ideas in-mind for the scope of the adventure for the second party).

@jollycooperative, Medheyg's character sheet is almost complete.

A few things to consider: I ran the ability scores for your point-buy using https://chicken-dinner.com/5e/5e-point-buy.html, and I noticed that you still have a +1 that you can float into any ability except for Dexterity (since your +2 would go there).

I am good with the cliffclimb shifter trait that you created. I approve that.

I notice that Keen Senses (from the Elf kinship) is on your character sheet, but that is not something that shifters get. Please remove that, and remove the adjoining Perception proficiency related to it.

Let me know when those edits are done, and I can review and approve.

Sounds good! I think I'm gonna go with Starling for my Druid's Kinship. I may need the week though to finish putting the character together. I have a few obligations going on this week that are going to cut into my free time.

But basic gist of my concept is a Starling who was knocked down to Planegea and was initially terrified and isolated themselves from the things they saw. But people of some sort do spot them and start worshipping them as a deity. He still wouldn't directly interact with them, but they would bring him offerings and food and such and kind of these small introductions to the life of whatever particular tribe this might have been.

But he hasn't lost his connection with the stars at all, drawing upon magics in the world around him and especially what he can still feel from the night skies above. It's like this constant nostalgia for home, which keeps him at a distance from the people around him. I might eventually have him run out when someone realizes maybe he isn't an actual God, or there's some sort of conflict from a legit God rising up in the area. I'll flesh this all out more once I see what sort of adventure the second group might have and where I can build upon from those hooks.

Bracus the Healer is nearly complete and good to look over.

Edit: Bracus is the local medicine man for the Two-Axe tribe. Healing and Balms. An accepted outside.

Story: It was the Madam of the tribe that came to Bracus which was something she had never done. She had lost all hope for her husband who laid in a coma now for so long his body was frail. She couldn't keep him alive much longer she feared. She was absolutely desperate when she came to Bracus who she had never accepted.

It was two days of Bracus life dealing constantly with her husband to bring him back. Bracus worked his strange ways and the Madam gave him anything he needed. Bracks need many herbs and they constructed a bath even as he called upon all his skills.

It was on the morning of the third day when the Madan and her extremely frail husband walked out to see the morning light. At that day and forward, Bracus was part of the clan and it was unheard of to say otherwise.

I think Wotan is probably the person that mothers tell children will kill them in the night if they don't obey, but that's a myth. He wouldn't kill a child. He might scare it within an inch of its life. But he'd definitely act as Krampus and Santa. Made a list of all the kids as they grew up and found out who was naughty and who was nice. Checked it twice as they grew up. If they are still naughty he sacrifices them to himself after beating them with a cane and stuffing them in a Sack. But he can be placated with sweet treats.

Going off what I remember from the paper copy of 4e or 5e players' handbook, which I lost somewhere along the way ... Mostly flavor; I used the Tasha's option for floating ability increases to get the scores from standard array. I'm digging into the D&D Beyond link from your first post, now, to get more details. He'll be a Winter eladrin, which jars a bit with the character concept but might explain why he's hanging out with mortals instead of the Winter court.

EDIT to ADD: equipment choices ... it's not a standard setting, I'm going with the equipment from background (Raider) and my best guess at what makes sense for a Stone Age Fighter. Might want to add stonecrafter's tools, if that's allowed. (Practically, that's a hand-sized hard rock, a solid piece of antler, and a leather strap.)

That's cool, how about Stekko is the one that shared the stories about Wotan AND is the one that is secretly feeding him information about naughy and nice kids in the clan?

How about Stekko is the one that you healed? He's the cousin of the chief, so that would make Bracus really well accepted into the clan, plus Stekko would be bound by a life-debt towards Bracus. I am willing (if the DM agrees) to put in a wife and a couple cildren too for Stekko to fit in your backstory.

Yes this is good! Wotan needs a good PR man. Being a monster tends to limit ones survival prospects, at least socially.

All right, here's the character sketch while I finalize the sheet. Still working on finding a portrait.

I figure given the characters so far, that we're unlikely to be all from the same clan. If that wants to change (or if DM feels there's a better match for the lore) I can edit almost all of this to make it work better narratively.
Lilla, full name Lilla'martu which is badly mangled Sumerian for "wind daughter", is a human sorcerer. Lilla hails from the western reaches of the Great Valley, and was recognized from a young age both as showing promise both in hunting and fireside dance and song. Over the course of many years Lilla refined those skills and earned herself a reputation as a dependable and worthy member of the clan.

The western reaches of the Great Valley are subject to frequent raids by frost giants from the Stone Empire, and on a particularly fateful hunting trip Lilla and her band were beset by a raiding party not of giants but other mortals from an opposing clan. Knowing that a life of slavery awaited any who were taken captive, they broke ranks and fled in all different directions. The hunters became the hunted. Lilla and some of her comrades were cornered against a clifftop. One opted to jump. Two surrendered. Lilla stabbed one of their pursuers with her stone knife, only to look up and see the point of a spear rushing towards her chest. She felt pain, white-hot, and then she felt nothing.

When Lilla opened her eyes she was in a yellow-black maelstrom of horrifying creatures and twisted, gnarled flora. She wasn't standing so much as floating. And she seemed to lack corporeal form, drifting aimlessly through the abyss. There was a cold sense of dread and inevitability permeating all things and time lost meaning. After an eternity that passed in an instant, Lilla felt warmth in her chest and she gasped for air. She opened her eyes and found herself lying on her back at the top of the cliff where she had died. A strange woman was lifting her hand from Lilla's chest, and the hewn bodies of friend and foe alike lay as if toys tossed aside by some giant.

In the weeks that followed, word spread that the hunt had been betrayed by one of their kin. A name whispered by firelight. A traitor's name. Word also spread of the huntress who had cheated death and had been... altered somehow by the process. Friends became distant. Children shied away from her. Lilla could do nothing but what she knew how to do. She continued to hunt, but now using the arcane arts to augment her prowess.

On a chilly autumn evening Lilla was summoned to her chieftain's tent and given a new quarry to hunt: Leave with the traitor's name; return with the traitor's scalp.

Principles and Values
- Honor: At the end of the day, one's word is all they have.
- Freedom: Live free or die hard.
- Loyalty: In this world of wonder and danger, mortals can only survive by working together. Kin and kith foremost.
- Beauty: Dance, song, and art are how we pass down our traditions and knowledge, it is how we prepare our children for the world.

Character ties
None yet but I'm open to having ties with anyone!

Okay, submitted my character sheet. It's not 100% complete (gotta do items still) but it's almost there.

Questions for the DM:

1) Many subclasses in Tasha's have expanded spell lists for sorcerers. I'm playing Shadow sorcerer and I really really don't want to sound entitled but I think the expanded spell lists in Tasha's is a tacit acknowledgement that the sorc is lacking on spells known per day.

So I figure it can't hurt to ask, and if you decide no I'll probably still stay the course as far as subclass, but I was googling around and found this: https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-MRY4U1W8dLMwlLGV9ca

The Shadow one seems pretty thematic. May I add those?

For reference the spell table is:

Level 1: cause fear, false Life
Level 3: darkness, invisibility
Level 5: gaseous form, summon shadowspawn
Level 7: shadow of moil, phantasmal killer
Level 9: antilife shell, seeming

2) Do we have any guidance as far as what session 0 will look like? Where we're starting, etc?

OOC:
That one time Santa killed all the bad guys and died in the process:
https://i.imgur.com/5i4jfvo.jpg

"If you don't let the child go, I'm going to kill you."

Berserkir - Danheim (to set a mood)

A tense staredown ensued, neither party willing to back down. Wotan drew himself out preparing to lunge, already his hand betraying to the blade of grass at his hip. One baleful green eye gleaming madly from behind the straw hat.

Neither moved, neither blinked. But Wotan didn't even breathe. He waited, in perfect stillness until an opening presented itself. It was something he had learned over centuries of combat. It confused the enemy, in single combat at least. Contorted as he was in the nearly impossibly Torqued low guard, the six raiders took a moment to reconsider.

Wotan didn't need further invitation as he struck out in his fury against his opponent who had fallen to his heel. Wotan's speed and intensity breaking instantly into a draw and slash caught him blindsided, the Blade of Grass expertly slashed through the air and bifurcated the bandit. The blow had cut the top knot clean off the boys head, but left him undamaged.

Wotan interposed himself between the boy and bandits half on instinct. He hunched forward and snarled through his lower register, a sound not unlike a massive snake bellowing. The five remaining descended upon Wotan with the fury to avenge their fallen comrade.

Wotan turned three blows away, the first two by dodging outright, the third blow catching him squarely in the ribs. The sound of bones breaking followed that. If it bothered him, Wotan didn't show it as he parried the fourth club deftly, and was grazed by the fifth attack.

All five had committed to their attacks, off balance Wotan struck from sinistra, a left handed slash through the groin of his nearest adversary. The leg was cut clean through by the Blade of Grass. Leaving Wotan bruised, and two of them dead.

They continued pummeling at Wotan with their barrage of clubs. Wotan managed to deflect the first two, but the third caught him in the forearm. Breaking the limb. The torn flesh around the attack erupted into a bright blue flame that cauterized the wound shut almost as soon as it opened, Wotan didn't even flinch.

Instead with perfect precision he struck from the right at shoulder level. A gout of blood followed by the battle cry of his friend. "I'll eat your liver." Two more strikes with their stone clubs. Wotan sidestepping the first but catching the second in his abdomen. Once more unflinching as if he felt no pain.

Wotan sliced to his right from sinistra across the younger of the two remaining bandits torso. The blade cut deep but missed the heart. Instead the youth dropped to the ground clutching his chest writhing in agony.

Wotan ignored him kicking the final surrendering bandit as hard as he could in the chest and neatly impaling him through his protesting mouth to the dirt beneath his corpse. The final bandit he grabbed by the base of the skull and smashed his skull so hard into a nearby stone stele it cracked the masonry. Crushing the bandit to paste. Wotan exploded into bright blue embers.

He walked back into the settlement the next day looking like the fight never occurred and with no knowledge of the events. This was about 20 years ago, he has only been heard of in murmurs of his protecting the roads. Speaking scorn to all the gods old and new.

Mood Change

Ever scornful of the gods, Wotan has a cult of shamans and witches and is a prolific supporter of their blood rites. They, the Heathen, Call Him Hangatyr, or the Hanged God. As he often contributes himself bodily to fulfill blood sacrament. In a bizarre ritualistic torture, Wotan is bled dry and his blood is drank with blue mead. His flesh is consumed in the sacrament as well. In such a way, Wotan has secured himself a great amount of notoriety.

Privately: He has become possessed with a notion of a conglomerate of tribes. An immortal kingdom that will storm the realm of the gods and kill them.

Hey @Jomsviking, I'm reviewing your character sheet for Wotan, and I have some questions:
- How did you get the ability scores that you have for him. They seem awfully high, based on a 27 point buy, they don't fit the standard array, and they don't fit my custom array.
- Under "Magic Initiate" (the variant human feat you chose), you have 4 cantrips listed and no 1st level spells.
- I do not know what "Revenant" is. Can you please provide some more details on that option?
- You chose the "Chieftain's Kin" background, but did not include anything about that background into your character sheet (like the skill proficiencies, tool proficiencies, or equipment)

For the first group (basically, the first 5 approved characters), the game will start on the western range of the Great Valley, near the Bear clan, but not too close that there is some issues. They will be sort of between Bear Clan's hallow and Fishgather, along the Bear river.

I am still figuring out the second group's location, but I have it narrowed down to 3 locales:
- Along the Ape river, just north of the Hallow of Kho, and south of Swapshore
- East of Bendgather, just north of the Icehook Peaks
- South along the Ox river, just south of Thuzo (near the part of the map that says "Sea Empire")

Even with the most flexible of the three systems for ability scores I am allowing (27 point-buy), there would not be a way where you could get 3 different ability scores at a 15 and then a 14 in a fourth ability (which you have in wisdom). Check the math again. If you wanted to boost Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution by 1 (per your chosen custom race), you would need to have an 8 in Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.

Looks good to me. I plan on cheating death and will make that clear from the outset. Wotan, as the budding God of mankind is here to kill the gods for betraying mankind from the beginning. This may seem paradoxical, but Wotan is utterly insane. Fixing sheet now

Alright, so for right now, I have the following sheets completed and accepted:
- @GeneCortess' Bracus (Green Primal Dragonborn Druid)
- @MrFaberJack' Stekko aka "Gravelsnake" (Fireblood Primal Dwarf Chanter)
- @Plum' Lilla'martu (Variant Human Sorcerer)
- @jollycooperative' Medheyg (Cliffwalking Shifter Ascetic)

These first 4 people will be part of the first adventuring party, taking place near a bend in the Bear River, with the Two-Axe clan. There is one vacancy to be filled in that first adventuring party.

We have some character sheets submitted for:
- @Jomsviking (A human revenant Barbarian named Wotan)
The following character sheet updates are needed:
* correcting of ability scores
* adjustment of revenant features
- @tibbius (An eladrin fighter named Seyala)
The following character sheet updates are needed:
* removal of "Ray of Frost" from spells list
- @Khulod (An acidic half-ooze druid named Breathe)
The following character sheet updates are needed:
* a final confirmation that you are okay with your ability scores (my custom array would help you more than what you are using with your standard array choices)

First person to make those changes and confirm them in a post indicating so on this thread will get the open spot in the first adventuring party.

That being said, the adventure for the first group will have the people being brought together by a chieftain, who has sent emissaries to other nearby clans to aid in a matter of safety.

Skarna, desperate to avenge her son and protect her clan, has sent messengers to bring any remaining hunters in the area to aid her people to track down and slay the Night Thing (a monster that has attacked the Two-Axe clan for the last week) in its lair while it’s weak.

[...]

Characters from other clans: Why have you left your clan to help Two-Axe? Are your clans allies? Do you feel personal loyalty or obligation?

[...]

Now is also the time to work with the players to decide which PCs know each other, if any.
Circling back to these excerpts, now that I know Lilla will be in the first starting group I'd like to anchor her in the world a little bit more firmly. Per her backstory she's already out hunting a traitor, and her clan is from the western Great Valley so it would make sense that she'd at least know of and have passing contact with Two-Axe clanspeople. Can we expand on that at all?

Sure, since this is one of Lilla's values:

- Beauty: Dance, song, and art are how we pass down our traditions and knowledge, it is how we prepare our children for the world.

and since Stekko is fairly used to travel into the western area, there could have been some artistic meetings. Stekko could still be telling her story to the children of the Two-Axe clan, so that her name could be somewhate recognised.

Sounds fun. Perhaps Lilla and Stekko have crossed paths more than once, since it would be common for her to be out and about hunting, and he seems like quite the wanderer in his own way? It could be a relationship of mutual respect, maybe from a safe distance.

Yeah, that's fine. Stekko is a partial wanderer. Meaning that he travels quite a bit but at the end always come back to the clan. Not much different than Gandalf with the Shire.

- South along the Ox river, just south of Thuzo (near the part of the map that says "Sea Empire")
This details the starting locations of both groups. Your character would belong to the second group.

Yeah, I'm definitely going for a Circle of Stars Druid. I'm currently building him in dndbeyond, so should have something in here soon.

The following character sheet updates are needed:
* removal of "Ray of Frost" from spells list
I was doing some minor numbers-checking on the 27-points associated with your ability scores, and I noticed that if you chose the following makeup, you could boost your Strength to a 16, and keep everything else the same:

Would you be interested in that?
Yes, very, I edited the sheet to address both these issues.

I just approved Seyala.

@Plum Based on optimal ability score math, Linna can have an additional +1 in one of the following abolition of your choice:
- Strength
- Dexterity
- Intelligence
- Wisdom

I just submitted my character. I still need to do the equipment conversions and check out that doc. Plus the map and the pouch of 5 GP from his background need to be reworked as well. And the end of his backstory still needs something extra to push him into adventuring, though I'm gonna wait for group 2's adventuring hooks before I finalize that. I think everything else is there though if you want to take a preliminary look.

OK...I think I've got it. Yi'gga (YE-guh), Variant Human (former) Captive, Undead Pact Warlock. She used to be kept as a servant, until the clan that took her encountered Lha'hom, an undead terror that threatened to destroy them unless it was given a suitable offering. The chief chose to give it Yi'gga. She was given a choice, Lha'hom would consume her soul and let the clan go, or she could serve the undead horror and live as well. She chose to live, but now she carries Lha'hom with her, and wears the terror's visage when she uses his power. The secret she keeps is that the chief's wife brought Lha'hom's fury upon his people, but refused to give her up to save his people. It was mere whim that Lha'hom agreed to the "lesser" prize of Yi'gga.

Interesting, I suppose Dex would be the logical choice. Is this DM fiat or am I just a big wumpus who screwed up the math?

It is easy to find issues with someone else’s work. That’s why peer review is so important in research or team coding projects.

Proofreading others’ work and checking answers is something I’m naturally pretty good at.

I found a way to configure your character’s ability scores a little better. I don’t think your math was wrong, but maybe not fully optimized. We are talking about 1 point.

I'm just curious because I used a Point Buy calculator, but I'll add +1, thanks!

We can make this concept work! It’ll be fun.

I’ll send you some specifics around your undead patron, and Nazh-Agaa, the King of the Dead, who actively hunts undead in Planegea. :D

Okay, the character sheet is perfect! Approved!

We can work on connecting your backstory lore into the second adventure, too. I have thoughts.

Group 2 has 3 character almost complete, and one other concept:

- (tibbius) Seyala, an eladrin elf fighter - approved
- (Khulod) Breathe, an acidic half-ooze druid - approved
- (Ranimara) Oie-ao, a starling druid - approved

I have settled on the following area as our adventure locale for the second group:
- East of Bendgather, just north of the Icehook Peaks

I did, I put it under Ooze Sire and listed the abilities under it, but it seems you noticed since that post I quoted. Breathe will be nibbling on everything to help with that terrible hunger. ^^
I see this in your character sheet, but not a choice made for it.
[ +- ] Echoes of the Dam
Can you please choose one of these options and add it to your character sheet?
Oooh, right, more goodies! I'm just wooly-headed of late due to some changes in medication, sorry!

Now I am a sneaky oozeling. Now I can stalk my food. Food beware!

One thing is missing from your warlock:
- at 1st level, warlocks should know 2 spells for use with Pact Magic. You are missing one of those 1st-level spells (Mage Armor does not count against your spells because you chose to take the Eldritch Adept feat, and chose Armor of Shadows as your Eldritch Invocation, which gives you at-will castings of Mage Armor).

I will accept Yi'gga, but I want you to add one more spell to your spells known.

Weird. I was struggling to make a place for cantrips without messing up the sheet and I must have copy/pasted a version without Witch Bolt. It is there now.

Hi @HeavyDuty03, thanks for submitting Davros.

I have a few edits I would like done before I accept his character:
- RANGER FEATURE: FAVORED ENEMY: you only pick one creature type or two types of humanoid at 1st level. Please either choose either your choice of BEAST, a different creature type, or an additional humanoid type along with your HALFLING choice.
- BACKGROUND: HUNTER: I see no evidences that you took the Hunter background. Please add skills, tools, languages, equipment, and your background feature from your background.
- EQUIPMENT: Please choose the standard equipment from your ranger class and your background. From there, we can discuss item trades that make sense for the region.

Hey, one more thing: your class allows you to pick 3 skills for your class, on top of the Athletics and Survival that you get from you Hunter background.

You still need to choose 1 skill.
Oct 15, 2022 11:47 pm
Alrighty. Added nature as the last skill.
