Chapter 9 - Boom, Anyone?

It's been two weeks hanging around the asteroid base. You've had time to pick up some gear and using the workshop, your armor and weapons are back in tip top shape, and looking Shiny.

Dancy requests you come to her office for a 'job'.

"Well gentlemen, I've got a hot one here if your interested. It seems this whole 'Rebellion against the Empire' thing is heating up in some sectors, meaning the Empire is redistributing their fleet. I've been approached by a group that's eyeing a Clone wars Dreadnaught that's just shown up over Felucia. These things are huge and clunky by today's standards, but they still pack some firepower if you can crew them. Normally, I'm all in on a job like this, but I'm pretty sure the 'Felucia Freedom League' is just a cover for some pirates, probably the Star Dusters, that run out of the Tion Cluster. I don't mind helping these types take out an Imperial ship, but I can't see it helps any of us to let Pirates run free in a Dreadnaught. " She pauses for a moment to smile at Ken.

"Of course, that's where you come it. This FFL has asked if they could hire some crews to back them up in assaulting the ship. They have plenty of bodies, but they're having trouble pulling together enough small ships to be able to attack from multiple points. They want me to provide three ships to deliver a dozen guys each to different entrances to the ship to help spread the attack. They think if they can lock down the main hangar, the bridge and the engines, then they can lock up the ship and clean out the Imperials one corridor at a time. But since we don't want them to get away with a working ship, I need someone to fight their way to the engines and destroy them. I assume, once the fighting looks bad, the Dreadnaught crew will start to scuttle the ship. I'd like you guys to make sure the engines get blown, without necessarily blowing up the whole ship or yourselves. It won't be the perfect outcome for the FFL, but there'll be plenty of gear to strip and the Empire will be down a major ship."

Sipping her cafe, she lets you absorb the offer.

"Intriguing. Taking a job with the duplicitous intent to not complete it. I would be interested in accepting the job, just to see if we could pull off the ruse." AD-hoc says, and starts 'daydreaming' (or whatever the Droid equivalent is) of how to sabotage an engine that large.

Helmet set aside, Nox nearly begins physically salivating just thinking about the ship's prospects. "Hopefully there wouldn't be too much of a ruse necessary. We're there for the ship too, just not exactly like they thought."

Nox stares at the ceiling for a moment. "Could you interface with the ship, AD-hoc? Or would that take an astromech?"

"I have the necessary equipment to interface, but that could possibly leave a data trail. Although that, or manual sabotage would both work."

"Straight to the bottom line. Well, the FFL is paying me 5,000 credits for each ship just for transporting their teams. I'll pass that along to you now. If you make it back and the Dreadnaught is disabled, I can give you 10,000 more. Of course, I expect you'll be toting along anything that's not wielded down as you make your way out of there. I'll do my part in liquidating any 'salvage' you acquire.

Nodding again, Ken says, 'Sure. Sounds doable. But if AD-hoc can't disable the engines we'll need a backup plan.' He starts rifling through his clothing, pulling out various grenades and peering at them one by one. 'Do we have any schematics on the Dreadnought? What's it going to take to blow an engine? A couple of AP-grenades or are we talking a thermal detonator?'

"The dreadnought engines should generate enough energy to implode themselves. Assuming that energy can be redirected from propulsion to destruction." AD-hoc says.

"There should be plenty of things in the engine room that you could use. As I said, it's likely if the fighting turns against the Imperials, they'll try and scuttle the ship themselves. You guys would just try and keep the scuttling to the engines and not let it spread to the rest of the ship. The Dreadnoughts have been around a while, I'm sure one of the techs could pull up the layouts for you."

"Speaking of preparation, are we preparing to take one ship load of teams or two?"

"Just one. You'll need to head out to Columex and make contact with Jaarum, he'll be hanging out in the corner table at 'The Pergil Piper's Bar'. It's just outside the spaceport. He'll arrange for the the team to join you at your ship as well as providing jump times and coordinates. From there the 'official' mission brief is to dock near the aft of the ship, breach and capture. "

"Good thinking AD-HOC, but the lead freedom fighter vessel will be handling the jamming. Which means, once the shooting starts, your pretty much on your own until you secure some internal comms. That probably won't be possible until they have the bridge. Lots of time where no one will be talking to anyone."

'No time like the present,' says Ken. He jumps up and down and shadow boxes. 'I hope they disable the gravity, I fancy some zero-g manoeuvres.'

The three of you grab your gear and head down to the Ghest. It's a fairly routine run out of the asteroids and the hyperspace jump is non-eventful. Columex is not as busy as you remember it. There's a couple Imperial light cruisers scattered around the system. Looks like they're running routine scans, etc. It doesn't look like they'll cross your path and even with the lighter ship traffic, there's still a lot of ships flying into and out of Columex.

After what feels like hours, but's probably just one, you get clearance to land and settle into your bay at the Columex main spaceport.

Upon arriving at the spaceport, AD-hoc leaves the engine room and joins the others "I will help greet our passengers, and remind them not to touch anything.

Aware of the possibility this could be a false flag operation by the Imperials looking to flush out rebel sympathisers, Ken takes to the taverns and bars of Columex looking for signs of likely Imperial spies and with his ear to the ground listening for any rumours.

Well, Ken hears and overhears enough to know that it's not an Imperial operation. Just as he's now sure Dancy was right about it being pirates pretending to be freedom fighters. He's heard a few of them discussing what they'd be able to do once they had a 'bigger ship'.

You enter 'The Pergil Piper's Bar' and it looks about like you expected. A little more crowded for early afternoon, but the upcoming mission probably explains the extra folks. The bar has an interesting curved outer wall that only presents one 'corner' table, near the back, next to the kitchen entrance. There sits a Twi'lek sipping a drink and looking dis-interested.

Ken orders a drink from the bar then strolls nonchalantly over to the corner table, presumably the Twi'lek is their contact Jaarum. 'This seat taken?' he asks.

Nox is the last to enter and proceeds to the bar where he orders something that perks him up rather than mellows him out. He stays at the bar but keeps his comms open to hear what info Ken gathers.

The Twi'lek lets a grin slip, "Ah yes, she said she was sending a couple ships to help out. Give me your landing berth and I'll send a team over. Probably, Cardeen's team. Cardeen's a Devaronian and he'll be bringing about 10-12 others with him. They'll probably have some crates with them, to keep the heavy equipment out of public view. You've got a couple hours to kill before the teams sync up, here's the travel details."

Jaarum slides a datapad over to Ken.

Ken gives a nod as he looks over their itinerary. 'I'll let our pilot know Cardeen's coming. Find somewhere discrete for the heavy stuff. What's the cover story, mining team? Salvage?'

Jaarum shakes his head, looking a bit amused. "You give these nerf herders too much credit. There plan is put stuff in unmarked crate and hustle from their ship to yours. I'm fairly certain they have no idea what to do if some one wanted the inspect the crates. "

You arrive back at your ship to see a group of beings filing up the ramp to the ship. A couple of them are carrying 1 and a half meter crates between them. Once aboard you easily spot Cardeen, he's definitively a Devaronian and his size is impressive. They waste no time and once the crates are aboard, begin breaking out the weaponry. Most notably a pair of Blastech T-21 light repeaters and some backpack rig that looks like an over powered fusion cutter. That should make quick work of any 'locked' doors you encounter.

Looking over the repeaters, Ken runs his hand over one of them and gives the Devaronian a big smile. 'Nice. Any intel on the opposition we're facing?'

The Devaronian produces a toothy grin, "Imps and a lot of them, there'll be some Stormtroopers, but mostly it'll be navy types. The crew doesn't usually go armed so we expect them to run for cover. When we hit resistance, we need to blow through it and get to the engine room. Once we control that, we hold until the other teams reach their targets. The Chief'll let us know when she has the bridge, then they'll lock down the ship and we can sweep the areas clean."

'Easy as pie,' laughs Ken. He checks over the turret cannons, making sure they're fully operational. He's not expecting the imperial ship to put up much of a fight but there could easily be other vessels in the system.

As Ken steps to make some drinks, word comes in that it's time to go. Everyone pauses for a minute as the ship lifts against the planets gravity and through the atmosphere. Once the extra drag of leaving the planet passes, activity resumes. Several of the pirates are pleasantly surprised when Ken starts passing out drinks.

Ok, so let's have a 'plan' for distracting everyone while AD-hoc works, since I'm not sure his 'sneak' is up to task. Then AD-hoc, make 2 hard Mec rolls (one for each light Repeater) for the disable w/ remote.

AD-hoc will slip away from the crowd, easy enough for a droid, and heads to gather the supplies needed to sabotage the heavy blasters. Personal blaster fire will still be a problem, but of course, the plan is to not be fired upon at all.

AD-hoc hears the sounds of drinks flowing and cards shuffing in the distance and knows its time to move. Heading over the where the weapons are stored, the droid begins working to make sure they have a failsafe in case these blasters are turned on them.

AD-hoc saunters back into the crew lounge, his steely eyed expression giving away nothing. A few minutes later, from the cockpit. "Heads up, we're about 10 minutes until we drop from hyperspace. It's probably going to be bumpy after that."

You guys connect the docking collar and Renadt over there runs the security bypass on the outer lock. We file in take the ship. You guys are probably clear to leave at that point, unless you just want some action."

As the freedom fighters are lining up near the docking port, the Devaronian answers Ken, "Well, don't get too carried away, we're supposed to be capturing the ship. So, we'll need it intact, mostly."

You feel the vibration of the ship as it drops out of hyperspace and starts to make it's way towards the dreadnaught.

As they drop out of hyperspace, Ken shimmies up into a turret and opens up the radio. 'Places people. Crew to stations. Passengers strap in. This might get bumpy' He charges up the cannons and pivots to cover the dreadnought's weapon systems.

AD-hoc will head to the navigation station in case sone computer wizardry is needed. Bit he will be ready to discretely board the dreadnought after their passengers. Once out of earshot, he says to Pergano 'Let's get our passengers off our ship, shall we?'

Pergano nods to AD-hoc, "Of course, here we go." You feel a burst of speed as the Gheist charges towards the Dreadnaught, you can see about a dozen other small ships speeding at it from several angles. Over the comms you hear an Imperial Officer demanding identification from the approaching ships. He's cut off mid-sentence by the blaring static of a Comms Jammer. Several of the Dreadnaughts turbolasers open up on the approaching ships.

As you close in, now to close for the turbolasers to track effectively, you see the first of ships docking near the front of the Dreadnaught. Pergano's arms race across the controls as he heads along the ship towards the rear.

"Haha! Now we're in it!" Nox whoops and thrusts his fist in the air, lingering near the center bay to be of use wherever he might be needed.

Once he's too close to use the cannons against the turbolasers, Ken slides down the turret ladder and starts to secure his small arms. Any pirates he points towards the docking collar. 'Go, go, go.'

The crew of 'freedom fighters' lines up near the lower hatch, Pergano brings the ship to a stop and extends the docking collar. Once connected one of the crew drops down to the external hatch and begins running his security hack. For an eternity, all of 30 seconds, everyone stands motionless until the door suddenly springs open. The pirates start sliding down the ladder and transitioning into the Dreadnaught's hallway. The sounds of alarms echo up out of the ship. Once on board, the pirates form up in two lines and start moving into the Dreadnaught.

AD-hoc hopes to get to the engines, and disable them, before any of the 'freedom fighters' arrive there. He thinks over the layout of the ship, and the pirates most likely route. Saying only to Ken and Nox, "I believe I can get to the engine room before our passengers. One of you should accompany and watch my back. One of you should also follow them and make sure they don't cause unnecessary trouble. One of you should also protect the ship. Ah, I guess I can go alone."

Sliding on a pair of shock gloves and lowering the scanner goggles to cover his bulbous eyes, Ken simply nods at Nox and slips silently down the ladder into the dreadnought's corridor.

Crouching in the darkness, he lets his senses adjust, and looks out for the tell-tale blaster fire to see where the pirates have gone. Nudging on his commlink he whispers, 'Moving out.'

AD-hoc and Ken move into the dreadnought. Separating immediately, Ken ease's down the corridor following the sounds of combat. AD-hoc removes a service panel and slides behind the machinery into a maintenance corridor. The maintenance corridor is completely empty as AD-hoc hustles towards the engine room. Moments later he approaches a service panel that will open into the Engine room. He can hear excited voices from the other side.

Ken quickly catches up to the pirates, they are just clearing an intersection of some Stormtroopers and a few crew.

I think I'll go with burst, mostly because of the time pressure.
AD-hoc doesnt waste any time entering the engine room. He tries to sound indifferent, and authorative at the same time. "Insurgents incoming. Evacuate, sealing the room behind you. They can not be allowed access here. Find an escape pod unless different orders come in."

One of the three tech's in the room drops his tool box at AD-hoc's appearance. Jumping back a bit he stumbles "Dank Farrak, you scared the pudu out me."

A second tech pauses only for a second, "You heard him, lock your stations and let's get out of here."

The third tech punches some buttons and as he steps back from his console, "Why did he come through the maint shafts?"

The second tech is almost to AD-hoc when he replies, "Because the comms are down and the hallways are full of pirates or what not. Now come on, with this panel off, I can get us to the escape pods."

The three techs then disappear into the maintenance corridor without a second look at AD-hoc.

mostly please with the results, AD-hoc looks over the computers and machinery all around. "Nox, there were three techs in the engine room. Just alerting you that I inadvertently sent them your way." he says in the commlink. Then he tries to figure out the best way to make the engines permanently stop doing what they're normally supposed to.

AD-hoc, you can spit ball some idea on how to break the engines and we can throw some dice at it. Or you could make a mechanics or computers roll to come up with a plan. The plan would center around either computers or mechanics, depending on the one you roll.

AD-hoc is a repair droid, he fixes things, destroying them on the other hand.... He reached for his hammer, knowing that was a surefire way to break something, but decided to stop and think if there was a better way to render the engine inoperable. If he could make it seem like the Empire was responsible, even better.

AD-hoc considers the Engines, these old Dreadnaughts have been around since the Clone Wars. They have antiquated fuel igniter systems, why just pulling the igniters out of the six engines would stop the ship, until someone replaced them. Then there's the fuel regulator, re-calibrate it to low and the engines would just spark and putter, calibrate it too high and the engines would over thrust. They might melt, unless they were turned off. Continuing around the room, AD-hoc sees at least 40 workstations, but there were only 3 techs... That's right, these ships used to be crew heavy, like 16,000 crew. With some upgrades and lots of slaved systems, the crew got down to a couple thousand. If the slaved systems were disabled, it would take 30 or more people to do anything with the engines. Like if the fuel regulator was set too high and 3 of the engines were set to reverse thrust and the controls were disabled; then ship would just shake and rattle while the engines melted themselves.

AD-hoc put away his hammer, deciding this situation requires more finesse. He opts to re-calibrate the fuel regulator way too high, so that the engines over thrust and hopefully melt. Unless the pirates can fix it fast enough, but he doubted that, based on the passengers they brought over.

AD-hoc unhooks the various cables slaving the 30 or more consoles to just the 3 that the Techs had been using. Tossing the cables in a pile simply makes it impossible for someone to guess how they might have been connected. As he is finishing up AD-hoc notices a fuel regulator screen, showing the calibration is currently in normal limits...

Ken has been stealthy following the pirates as they make their way towards the main doors for Engineering. Staying about a corridor behind the prirates, they ran into a few crew and only about a dozen stormtroopers. It didn't slow them down with the two light repeating blasters creating a gap in the Stormtroopers. They're getting pretty close to Engineering when Ken hears the running boots of Stormtroopers coming from his right, from the front of the ship.

For reference, to your front are the pirates, moving towards the center line of the ship, your left takes you aft, backing up moves you toward your ship.

AD-hoc slides back into access shaft and as he exits into a main tunnel near where the ship is docked, bumps into a protocol looking droid that immediately begins demanding to know where AD-hoc came from and what he's doing coming out of an access shaft.

Nox hears some light clanging and an agitated voice from the direction he was expecting AD-hoc to return from.

Once aboard, the Ghest pulls away from the Dreadnaught. You can see various other ships still attached and occasional small explosions burst out from the hull or illuminate the viewports along the huge ship. As your making for jump distance from the planet, a few of the ships detach and move towards the main docking bay. It seems the pirates must be gaining control and the Dreadnaught itself is beginning to move.

As you circle around, several of the other ships that delivered pirates do detach from the Dreadnaught and make their way out of the system. The Dreadnaught itself then starts to move away from it's orbit and suddenly the Comm jamming ceases. Almost immediately the Dreadnaught transmits a message, "This ship is now the property of the Felucia Freedom League, we have claimed it in our ongoing struggle to break free from the Empire."

The briefest of pauses occurs before another transmission reaches your ears. "Power down your Engines and prepare to be boarded, that Dreadnaught is Imperial property." Your scanners are now showing a pair of Imperial frigates coming around the planet. Normally two frigates wouldn't be a match for the Dreadnaught, but recently captured ships take time to get everything back on line. The engines, however, seem to be working as the Dreadnaught goes to full power and starts it's lumbering acceleration away from the frigates.

The rest of the small ships that were involved in the assault are now rapidly departing. The frigates are taking long range shots at the engines of the dreadnaught. One glancing blow seems to have hit some sort of cooling line. AD-hoc recognizes the venting gasses would be vital to keeping the engines in normal temperature ranges. However, engines already running a heavy fuel mix would ... Yep, there they go, the top center engine seems to have blown and the others are shutting down.

"All Felucia Freedom League ships, return immediately. We need to secure this ship against the Imps while we strip what we can. Let's go, there's now way those frigates have the troops to retake this ship, but we need you guys to load up before they get reinforcements. "

AD-hoc is able to direct the pirates, or rather Freedom League crew on where to stow their loot. He was impressed with how much they were able to aquire with such short notice. Who knew they were so adaptable? It would cramped ride until delivery, but should hopefully be worth the profits.

Ken's shots scream out of the docking bay, those near windows see some of the pirates diving for cover from the sound of the blast in such a closed space. The shots slam into the lead shuttle and you can clearly see sparks coming out of the main guns.

With the Ghest muscling in between the shuttles, Ken swivels the ventral turret around and strafes down the side of another shuttle, the twin laser cannons thundering into the hull.

Ken's barrage rocks the second Imperial shuttle, there's a temporary flash as some gases escaping the ship burn for a moment before being extinguished in space. A moment later, as the shuttle passes through the magnetic field into the hangar, the tear in the ship reignites with the fresh surge of Oxygen.

Pergano veers the ship hard and accelerates along side of the Dreadnaught. Heading forward he keeps the larger ship between you and the Imperials. Within moments you're streaking away from the chaos and into Hyperspace.

It's a cramped ride back to the Asteroid base, but nobody seems to upset. The pirates appear happy to be alive and not to miffed at losing the Dreadnaught. Especially with the amount of gear they packed aboard your ship.

I think AD-hoc would know what was there, but so would the pirates. Let's just take our cut/bonus, and not anger them.

Nothing to stop anyone from wandering through the cargo bay during the trip. Also, none of the pirates would be in the cockpit, so they won't see any navigation information or even the base, except from the inside.

The crew accepts Ken's drinks and after a few minutes of hushed conversation one of them speaks up. "Rhen Var, there's a scattering of old bases from the clone wars and what not. We've cleaned up a few and have them on standby for regrouping, or just a get away. He smiles at that and one of the other guys starts laughing, "Oh yeah, that week with the Zeltrons, man that was the best way to blow some loot."

Rhen Var is a frozen world, inhabited primarily by abandoned bases and the scrap of several wars. The pirates direct you to one such location.

The landing area is a carved cave, big enough for several freighters and has a tunnel leading into a structure that is partly in the hillside and partly exposed. It only takes a few minutes once the power is brought online for the 'mess hall' to begin to warm up.

"Well, to be honest, the last one was a bust. I mean, no one expected the engines to burn out just as we're making a run for it. But, to be honest, we've been watching that ship for almost a solar rotation and it hasn't gone anywhere. The Empire might have known what they were doing for a change. Park an imposing dreadnaught on it's last legs out where people can see it and 'ooh ahh' be afraid. As long as no one challenges it, it's a big bad monster. But we took it over in a single attack, and the engines blew as we tried to make off with it. The propaganda hounds will have a field day with that and we grabbed some gear off the ship. Not what the boss was after, but for those of us that are more anti-Imp than pirate, it's a win.

"Well, I'm in charge of this team. This was about the biggest thing we ever tried to score, so lots of teams involved. One of the guys sent a comm message letting them know where we were and asking for info on what the rendezvous plan is. No use doing too much planning for a job that has so many chances to go sideways. We tend to play these things loose and circle up when it's over."

"Sounds good to me." After everyone enjoys a drink and some feet up time. You head back to the landing bay and start unloading the mish mash of crates and gear scavenged from the dreadnaught.

It's a pretty interesting haul, there's at least 3 crates of E-11's, couple crates of grenades and one case that has 10 Stormtrooper armor torso clamshells. Not to mention several pallet loads of ship components. It looks like someone cleaned out the docking bay's Maintenance parts storage.

You begin going through the loot and dividing it up. The Pirate in charge seems to be inclined to give you the smaller, easier to sell loot while trying to keep his hands on the bigger 'ship' modules.

Before long you have the gear split up and your part loaded back onto the Ghest. The pirates have received word that someone will be out in a day or so to pick them up. So with everything resolved you head out to meet with Dancy at the Asteroid base.

Looks like the new characters are ready. Wrap up notes from Dropping off the loot at the Asteroid base.

Pay recap - 5,000 base + 10000 disabling the ship + Pirates hired you to come back (we ended up doing loot instead of credits) Dancy will give you 12000 up front for the Ship components and more later depending on how they sell. If you have an interest in any of the smaller items, list them. Dancy suggests taking the rest to IsoTech, they'll be better at moving the smaller stuff. (also, adventure hook ;) )

So that's 27k / 3 and then Nox will wander off somewhere on the base in case he comes back.

Looks like we aren't getting rain this weekend, So I'll be on the farm most of the daylight hours. I'll put up a game post, probably on Sunday evening.
