OOC:
Yea, of course.
Seonaid tries her various languages out upon the early morning new-comers, and it's hard to tell if or how much they understand, but it does spur one of the younger helpers to say, in a heavily accented version of Westron, "Go. Please, go.", along with a string of more Southron.

Not wanting to be rude, Éothain accepts a bread heel. "Thank you," he says in Westron. He takes a bite — actual bread is a luxury on an overland journey — then packs up his gear before he finishes it.

Ragnarr being used to being ran off from places gets up in a hurry and is very apologetic.

Seònaid shrugs her shoulders and accepts the bread, giving the person a friendly smile. Then, packing her belongings, she joins the others on their trek out of the ring of stones.

"Maybe it is something special to them. A place of ritual, or somewhat," she comments to the others. "I am just glad we did not mistakenly break any taboos or cause insult to these people."

Cirion gathers his things and packs his bed roll, then accepts some of the dark bread, bowing his head.

"Their intent seems friendly enough. They could have attacked us if they meant us harm. But, what are they warning us against?"

After observing his more experienced companions eating the bread, he follows suit and eats his portion.

The trek back up to the road requires a significant climb with many switch backs, and it's mostly in full view of the great clearing.

And so you can see as you leave, that once you've cleared the space, the older members of their group simply sit on the smaller stones that make up the inner circle and start a fire, eventually placing a pot over it to boil, and begin chatting. And in the meanwhile the younger helpers begin to erect poles that make a framework for what will probably be a sun-shade to cover the inner circle during the day.

It's hard to say exactly what kind of gathering is taking place but it appears that these folks just had some manner of gathering scheduled out here on this day, and were arriving early to get everything prepared before the heat of the day. The sun is just about to rise by the time you crest the edge of the ridge, and they are nearly finished with their set up.

Regardless of their intent, their arrival and need of the space stirred you all from your restful slumber at a time when good sleep was most needed. And it's a dour beginning to the day and the last leg of your journey.
OOC:
Everyone takes a level of Exhaustion from the disturbance and lost rest. However Duinhir and Cirion are the only ones effected by it, as they're the only ones that have already "used" their "Exhaustion-negation" from the good Embarkation roll.

Last thing is the Arrival.

Ragnarr, please give us a straight 1d8!

OOC:
does this Man of Minas Tirith ability apply?
Quote:
Cultural Virtue: OVER DANGEROUS LEAGUES - You may ignore the first level of exhaustion you gain. Afterwards, this ability cannot be used again until you have taken a long rest.

I would say so! Nice catch.

In the last few days of the journey the land begins to shift away from highland desert, toward arid steppe, and eventually coastal lowlands where things begin to turn green again.

And the last two days in particular it is perhaps comforting to see the familiar geometry of agriculture carved into the land, as sprouting fields and leafing vineyards begin to create a patchwork over the falling hills out into the distance.

You can see Umbar from many miles away as you approach, indeed most of the last day of travel you can first see the peaks of it's tallest towers and buildings, of which there are many, and their tops are shaped rather like upside down onions. Bulbous and round on the bottom and drawn up into a pointed spire at the top. Then the undulating forms of its blocky architecture come into view, much the same color as the pale terracotta soils beneath them, stretching to the sea. And finally it's tan and yellowish tall city walls.

Umbar is not as spread out as Pelargir, but it has more verticality built into it, and you figure it must house as many people or more.

As you draw closer to the gates you can see that, at the moment, there is quite the throng of people trying to get through. But there is some sort of hold up.

Most of the commotion is in Southron and so it's perhaps hard to know exactly what's going on at first but eventually you find yourselves standing before an official au the gate. They are able to speak in Westron, and they tell you that there is a minor refugee crisis in the east, and so there is more procedure to enter and remain in the city than normal, you will have to present yourselves to a city clerk for registration.
OOC:
Alright so last thing before we meet up with Onar, an Audience with an official from the city of Umbar.

As a group, please decide on a person to conduct the Audience introduction and request (to enter the city).

Wondering if it makes sense for Ragnarr to act for us, as he is our Guide? What do you think @Mnrtoler? Failing that the person with the highest Charisma. Seònaid's is 13

OOC:
Well IC I was thinking Ragnarr made a good choice, he travels a lot because of his hunted by the shadow background and according to the book seeking an audience starts with a traditions check which he has advantage on because of Bob. But he only has a +1 tradition and +2 charisma, but a +4 persuasion and the dm prefers skill checks over ability checks. What does everyone else offer? I already did the big rolls for the journey as guide so I don’t want to take someone else’s limelight

as the least well-travelled, thematically Cirion would definitely let his companions deal with something of this magnitude

OOC:
Seònaid has;
History +2
Traditions +2
+1 from Charisma

As a Warden she has Warden's Gift (d6) which can be used to give someone else a "...gain one Gift die, a d6, they can use after rolling any ability but before the Loremaster says whether it succeeded or not..."

OOC:
Éothain has no Charisma bonus and no proficiences in skills such as Persuasion or Tradition, so he's not your man.

OOC:
Looks like so far Ragnarr is the best fit with maybe a gift from Seònaid if needed
Aug 14, 2023 8:56 pm
OOC:
Duinhir is good at Tradition and Lore but not at Persuasion, so I'm fine with Ragnarr doing the talking. Also fits the characters.

OOC:
Sounds like a decision has been made!
You're all lead into a room in the gatehouse, following many others before you, and there are many after you still waiting. And you all stand before a magister of some sort sitting at a writing desk, on an elevated platform.

He says something very formal sounding in Southron, and an interpreter of some sort translates a dry, rambling official lecture about Umbar, that is part cautionary-welcome, but mostly a warning about laws and expectations, that culminates in a request, "Please state your names and your business in the great city of Umbar."
OOC:
Go ahead and give us the introduction roll, with as much roleplay and/or narrative as you care to apply to it :)

OOC:
Oh lord a perfect even 10. Sorry guys lol
Yes a great city it is indeed! My name is Ragnarr son of… Ragnarr will name his family sounding as wealthy and fancy as possible and will introduce the party in such a manner, and we have come to your fine city to purchase some of the finest merchandise for my family. We came all this way to buy items and then decide if a more formal trade shall be established.
Ragnarr says all of this with the confidence and gusto that some of the party begin to wonder if he remembers why we were really here.

Rolls

Lore (advantage) - (2d20H1+1)

(98) + 1 = 10

The magister nods along as Ragnarr speaks, and then says through the interpreter, " The Magister recognizes Lake Town and your Peoples' great triumph over the dragon.

And while commerce is always welcome, Umbar's resources are heavily taxed right now, with a refugee crisis.

Do you have a sponsor who will speak in your name, or signatory document? If not it is simply a matter of paying for the service.

And are you bringing any goods into the city for trade? We may have to assess a customary tariff.
"
OOC:
Ok, the Introduction roll will knock the Reaction Category down one from Neutral to Askance/Unknown.

Please give us the Audience/request roll (Traditions). It's open ended/no set DC, the higher the better result (ofc).
