Barlowe Station, Kansas

Barlowe Station is just that: a rail station on Black River’s main line and really nothing more. It serves primarily to replenish the water supplies on locomotives. The facilities are limited to a small office and a water tower, and the station was staffed by a single person. Few, if any, passengers ever get off at Barlowe, and even fewer board there.

On traincar your posse arrives at Barlowe. Upon arrival you find it eerily empty of human life. There should at least be a station manager, but no one gets the train.

The engineer gets out, intending to refill the water hopper, and tells you that he'll leave in about two hours, after he's drawn enough water from the tower. You step onto the platform, stretching your legs from the long ride. The train is short, the engine, the coal car, a passenger car, and a freight car wherein your horses are, along with true freight.

Let's start with them usual. Take this opportunity to describe your characters and why you're on this train going through Kansas. Are you a posse of people looking for something in particular, travelers in search of an important goal, or disinterested bystanders who have no place being player characters?

"Come on now, girl! Come on!" Dirt soothes, as he maneuvers his horse out of its place in the carriage, and guides her down the ramp and out of the carriage altogether. The ramp makes an awful clanging racket as the horse puts her weight on it.

"They say you can lead a horse to water…" Dirt starts, calling to the other passengers he’d shared the journey with, but leaves the other half of the saying unsaid. "… and I intend to do just that! Reckon she must be wicked thirsty."

He feels the stiffness slowly leave his body, and knows that the beast must feel the same. He claps the animal on the rump:

"Stretch it out, girl. Get that blood moving."

It’s only once he has fully disembarked and gotten the blood back into his legs, that he notes the heavy quietness in the air.

"Wicked quiet out here, ain’t it?" he says, chewing the words, and their possible meaning, even as he says them.

Delilah Dillon, soon to be Marshal Delilah Dillon, once she makes her way to the emerging town of Good Intent and pins on the star, has been on this slow-moving train all day. So she takes the trouble at every stop to stretch her legs and get some fresh air, and as it rolls up to Barlowe Station she looks from the window to the others in the car and shrugs.

"Not exactly the welcome wagon here," she says with a soft and pleasant drawl. "I don't see a soul out there, y'all. This might be a longer stop than intended if our engineer don't have no help loadin' up on coal and water."

Dillon, daughter of the famous Marshal who used to rule the roost in Dodge City, and sister to no less than four big brothers, follows the others off the train car once they've come to a full stop. Del -- her family sometimes also calls her DD, or Lilah -- wears her brown hair in a braid down her back, a Stetson, a simple enough blouse and skirt, and a light shawl over top. Less expected, she wears a gun-belt and four and a half pounds of steel on her rounded right hip -- a Colt Dragoon, her pa's horse pistol from the war that she had converted over to fire cartridges some years ago. Delilah is pretty, her smiles disarming and not in short supply, and she flashes her pearly whites as the passengers disembark.

"Good to stroll instead of sit for a spell, right? Hopefully we won't be here more'n an hour or two."

Kane steps off the train after Briggs and watches him lead his horse.

"Mighty fine horse ya got there." He didn't know whether that was true or not but it felt right to compliment the man on his animal. Horses were a means to an end for him. He considered them a bother that needed carin' and feedin'. He'd just as soon do without. The irony of this was he wore a rattler-hide duster and wouldn't be parted from it. That and his Sharps Big 50.

"Yayup. It is too damn quiet," he replies. "Two hours in this God-forsaken place. Sheeit." Adjusting his hat, he takes in the station platform and the general area. Withdrawing a pinch of chewing tobacco, he shoves it in his right cheek, finds a pole to lean against, and waits.

"You here for the posse call at the end of the line?" he asks Briggs or any of the other passengers. "Seems like a good deal. A wad of cash and a horse provided. Can't beat that with a stick."
Mar 3, 2024 4:29 am
"Not me," Dillon says as she paces the platform, shielding her eyes from the sun as she scans for -- well, anyone. "On my way to Good Intent. Landed myself a job there."

She wants to ask about the rifle, but instead responds to Briggs' comment. "Yep. Real quiet. Kinda strange. Pretty horse. What's her name?"

Dirt adjusts his wide hat, so he can better see the faces of those talking to him, while still blocking the sun.

"Nor me neither. I’m just passing through." he says, keeping things close to his chest. The question, followed by another about his horse, turns his thoughts dark for a moment. He pats the horse on the neck, and takes a moment to pay it close attention, so as to hide the scowl that had come over his face momentarily.

The man saw the word carved into the wood of the pen door. Thin, shallow cuts into the wood suggested a child’s hand had done the cutting.

Blossom…

The horse was inside, protesting Brigg’s being there with snorts and thrashing against the pen. How the man had calmed the beast and broke it to his will he could barely remember. Those days were a haze to him now. Last he remembered was the pool of blood making for his feet, and the heap of bodies left around that dining table…

He clears his throat.

"This here? This here is Blossom." he says, laughing at the name. If they thought his daughter gave the horse its name, all the better. "She’s a fine animal, alright!"

Ruby Reyes steps to the exit of the train car, a small steamer trunk held by a handle in one hand, a leather satchel in the other.

"Would any of you mind giving a lady a hand?" she asks in an a silky voice tinged with a Hispanic accent.

Ruby hardly ever needed to ask twice. Her dress would be scandalous in most parts of the world: a black bodice laced tight to accent her bosom and a divided skirt with no petticoats underneath revealed brown legs when the wind blew hard or she tactically stood in a posture to show them off. Her hair was long and wavy and blew freely in the wind giving her a wild and carefree aura that was at odds with the severe and matronly styles of many women in these parts.

There are four buildings and the water tower at Barlowe Station.

At the edge of the platform you unloaded on, a sign marked "Barlowe" swings from a post outside the single-story, unpainted building that is the station house. A wooden platform surrounds the building, and two wooden benches sit on the side toward the rails. Barlowe Station is a two-room affair. The front room holds the station master’s desk and a wood stove. The station master’s log book sits on the desk. A large map hangs on the wall behind the desk. There's no one visible inside.

Kane notices Delilah's eyes dwelling on his Sharps Big 50 as he takes in the Dragoon perched on her shapely hip.

You gotta respect a lady packing that kinda iron which is just as well ... a fine woman like that traveling alone an' all.

Turning his head to the side, he spits a slug of tobacco, burying it between the platform boards with the heel of his boot. He had noticed the female passengers in the train car. Of course he did. What else was there to do? One of them emerged now, looking for help. Another fine-looking woman.

"Ma'am I'd be happy to help ya. Kane's the name. Victor Kane, at your service." Kane extends an arm to the woman.
Mar 3, 2024 10:55 pm
Watching as Ruby Reyes -- brief introductions had been made earlier in the day -- exits the train and Victor Kane predictably moves to help the gorgeous young woman, Dillon just tips her hat at the others and moves into the station house. Her pappy always told her to not judge a book by its cover, but land's sake what a cover.

Inside the building, Del tries to get some idear on just what's goin' on. How long since the place was last occupied? Is fresh coffee made? Are there muddy boot-prints that haven't yet dried? Dated copy's of Denver's Rocky Mountain News or Leavenworth's Kansas Weekly Herald lyin' around?

Barrin' that, DD walks into the office to take a gander at that log book.
Mar 4, 2024 12:01 am
The engineer has got two buckets, 4 gallons each, and is heading to the water tower to fill it up. He'll be making a few (dozen) trips, but he looks fit enough to handle that easy.

There were no other passengers.

In the logbook, DD finds the last entry was yesterday evening, a Black River express to Denver. The rest of the entries also appear fairly mundane stretching back months to the beginning of the logbook.
Mar 4, 2024 12:30 am
Ruby grimaces in disgust at the spit tobacco. She eyes Kane hesitantly but as no one else offers she reluctantly hands over her traveling luggage first and then and debarks from the train. Once down she says, "No offense met, but even a handsome man like you might have trouble finding a wife with such a disgusting habit. If you're looking to quit, I have just the thing to help you." She opens her steamer trunk and pulls out an amber flask with a paper label. "'St. Jezebel's Syrup' is just the cure. It will take away the desire to ever put tobacco in your mouth again." She beams at him and presents the bottle. "On sale, too, for handsome gentlemen looking to improve their lives. Just $2 and your habit could be a thing of the past."

"So I've been told, Miss ... what was it again? I'm not sure I know. I was kinda sitting alone. I tend to keep to myself."

Kane takes the woman's luggage and stifles a scoff when she mentions finding a wife. "I ain't a family man Ma'am, so no worries there about finding me a wife. I ain't a fan of little kids neither, damn rascals.

A few steps later he enquires about her destination. "Just where am I delivering your luggage to? I'll be especially careful of your St. Jezebel's Syrup. That is curious though. Way back when I was raised a Catholic, I ain't never heard of a St. Jezebel. Anyways, I like my tobacco and a man's gotta have his simple pleasures.

Dirt was more than happy to let the others jaw on, so as to keep the focus off of him and his animal. He ties Blossom up, and lets her find what she might on the ground to pass the time with chewing.

He steps into the building, a moment after this Marshall Dillon, and stands in the doorframe, taking in the quiet.

"Something prodding at you, Marshal?" he asks, seeing how freely the woman moved about the room. If she was expecting the proper company, she’d have surely acted more reserved.

"I'm not a Marshal just yet, Mr. Briggs," Dillon says idly from where she's looking through the logbook, and from where she then scans over her surroundings. "And yeah, you could say that. Sometimes you just get a feelin', y'know? Somethin' feels off here. Could be the clerk's slept in or run off to the commode... but it don't feel that way, does it?"

Delilah's eyes are on Dirt as she finishes her sentence and her inspection of the office. When he tells her what he saw outside, she nods. "Well now, good spot. Can't hurt to take a look, can it? Let's see what we see."

Heading back outside, she gestures for Briggs to show her the tracks as she announces her findings to Reyes and Kane. "Was a train through here just last night, Black River Express to Denver, so might be the station manager is just under the weather today..."
OOC:
Presume I should make a Survival check? Dirt probably can't help me no more, right?

RE: the office / building -- I'm thinking DD's had enough time to look around and check it reasonably thoroughly, yeah? That would include looking for signs of a struggle, a weapon on the desk that's been fired, emptied shells on the floor, a locked (or broken into) money box out in the open, etc. You know the drill. She detectives that shit, looking for things that either don't fit, or that tell a story.

"You ain’t the furthest thing from a Marshal neither." the man offers, with a chuckle. "Pays for a fella to be cautious, I reckon."

"Might be those boys coming up out of Coyote? Some of them don’t play too nicely, if I can say so."

Reyes. Ruby Reyes. St. Jezebel was a local saint in Colombia. You can set the bags down here, I can take them now. You don't like kids, you say? Coincidentally I have an ointment to prevent that as well. But seeing as how your simple pleasures don't include women, I guess you won't be needing that as well," she smiles teasingly.

As she's about to pick up her things she sees two of the other passengers inspecting something on the ground near the station house. "What do you think they've found?" She saunters over to see what is going on.
Mar 4, 2024 3:41 pm
OOC:
@harrigan Certainly DD can make a Survival check once the tracks are pointed out, as can Reyes and Kane if they saunter over.

If someone succeeds at rolling a 4+, give us a sentence or two on where they learned to track people.

"Well howdy, Miss Ruby Reyes. Pleased to make your acquaintance. But lookee here. I ain't said I ain't interested in the fairer sex. What I ain't interested in is a wife hanging off my coattails ordering me around. No siree, no thank you. I am an independent man of the world. Now what's that you said about preventing kids? Well, I'll be, don't you have a bag of tricks? Anyways I reckon I'll have no need of that at the moment."

Kane sets the bags down as requested wondering where in tarnation Miss Ruby Reyes was going in a place like this. He follows her gaze over to the others.

"I ain't got an idea about that. Let's go see. I'm sure your bags will be fine here for a short spell."

Joining the others, Kane kneels on the ground by the prints and traces an imaginary line in the air above the footprints. "Welp, interesting. Fellas and ladies, over the years I have learned to track people. It's come in handy and I sort of fell into it finding a nasty outlaw a few years back."

Several human footprints outside the station lead from the tracks, then double back and return. Kane can't make out precisely how many people made the imprints, but can tell it was well over a dozen individuals. Interestingly, he also determines many of the prints were barefoot. The footprints head toward the shack at the back.
Mar 5, 2024 2:25 am
"Welp, Miss Delilah I do see something. We got some barefooted individuals here, but I can't say for certain how many. Looks like .... hmm..."

Kane stands up easily, turns his cheek, and spits a stream of tobacco juice into the dirt, away from the footprints o' course.

He walks alongside them, cocking his head, following the trail. "I'd say more than ten. Maybe as many as fifteen, maybe more, and they all lead to there," he says, pointing toward the shack at the back.

"Barefoot?" Dillon says with surprise, looking back down at the tracks. "Ah, yep! I see 'em now -- toes there... and there. Strange. Real strange."

"Might we check the other places out? Could be that someone’s squirreled away somewhere."
Mar 5, 2024 1:58 pm
"Other places? Seems we should check that shack. And by 'we' I mean some of you. If no one ain't here it stands to reason they might be there. I feel a tingle up my spine like something strange happened here." She hugs herself as a little shiver runs through her body.

Astute observers might note that the woman uses her right hand to make sure her draw is clear, and then the woman is all eyes on the structure ahead of them, and calling over her shoulder.

"And stranger, darker things out here than them boys outa Coyote, Mr. Briggs. Watch our backs, if y’would."

He pulls his pistols, and looks to Ruby:

"Stick close now, ma’am."
Mar 6, 2024 2:30 am
"Ain't no one home I reckon or they ain't answering."

As Kane comes upon the door, he jiggles the handle. "It's locked. I can bust it open with a bullet but it ain't our shed," he offers, looking for a nod from the group in either direction.

"There's some marks on the door too. An animal was clawing at it. Maybe it's a feed storage shed. Don't make much sense otherwise unless folks were runnin' away from this claw-footed beast and hiding in here."

Kane runs his fingers along the grooves of the claw marks wondering what it might be. He could track humans right enough but tracking animals wasn't in his wheelhouse.
Mar 6, 2024 3:51 am
Ruby nods in response. "You know how to use those?" she nods to Briggs' weapons. "Where are you passing through to? Or from is maybe the better question?" she asks after his response, trying to make small talk, watching his body language the way a trained saleswoman could.
Mar 6, 2024 7:56 am
"Yeah, private property and all, but just look at them claw marks. Could be someone's in there, unconscious or bleedin'. "Better than most." the man replies without boast or even much lament. It was a matter of fact, as far as Briggs was concerned.

He pays heavy attention to almost anywhere except for where the woman was standing, so that she might think he was too involved in scanning for trouble to answer her second question.
Mar 6, 2024 3:55 pm
DD examining the marks can tell they are claw marks but something tells her that this wasn't no bear or wolf, but something with human dexterity.

The shack is fairly small, and you could go around it, looking for windows or so forth. To one side you can see a poor excuse for a vegetable patch, and an outhouse is nearby.
Mar 6, 2024 5:32 pm
"Mighty strange ain't it? All them bare feet and now these marks? Maybe we better see if this shack's got a window."

Changing course, Kane begins to cautiously walk around the shack. His solution most times was to shoot first, ask questions later but not this time now that he thought about it after Delilah's comment about it being private property.
Mar 6, 2024 5:59 pm
The back of the shack is a small vegetable garden, and having gotten closer, it looks trampled.

The back window of the shack is smashed, glass fallen inside. It leads to the bedroom of the shack, and the sheets are all mussed. A nightstand underneath the window is overturned.

In the center of the floor lays a Colt Navy .36 revolver, the loading gate open, and six unfired rounds scattered around it. Near the weapon, a small stain, dark and brown.
Mar 6, 2024 11:49 pm
Ruby waits for a follow-up answer but upon receiving none she nods and says, "Well one reassuring answer is better than none," pointing out that she notices his lack of answer to her second question. "Well why don't you go be a brave man and inspect that stable. I'll cover you." Ruby smiles but has no weapon in hand to cover Briggs with.
Mar 7, 2024 1:51 am
OOC:
Is the window large enough to crawl through?
Mar 7, 2024 4:35 pm
The window is definitely large enough to go through.
Mar 7, 2024 7:24 pm
"I'm going in. See what I can see."

Victor pokes his head in through the window to listen for any noise. Laying his Sharps Big 50 to the side of the overturned nightstand, he steps over the sill and around the nightstand. Once he's fully inside, he grabs his gun and inspects the interior.

Kneeling on his haunches he touches the stain to see if it is still wet. "Looks like blood," he shouts to the outside. Taking the Colt, he loads it with the scattered rounds and shoves it into his belt. Then he rights the upturned nightstand and checks any drawers it might have and then he examines the rest of the interior.
Mar 7, 2024 8:01 pm
Inspecting the place from the window, Dillon takes a gander around the inside of the shed as well. "Any of them claw marks in there? Can you unbar the front?"
Mar 7, 2024 8:56 pm
"Now I was gettin' to that after I secured the premises."

Thinking that nothin' or no one was lying in wait, he attempts to unlock the door from the inside, looking for scratch marks around the door or the walls.
Mar 7, 2024 11:28 pm
Kane finds 4 expended rounds in the Colt, which he removes to reload with the fresh ones. Inside the nightstand, he finds the station master's lockbox (locked but easily smashed open).

A Survival or Healing roll might tell you more about the blood.

The front room serves as a kitchen, dining room, and living room, and is undisturbed. The sturdy door is easily unlocked from inside, allowing the others easier entrance.

"Ms Reyes and I are going to go and check on the stable! See if there’s a horse left in there!" Dirt calls to the other two, as they bust their way into the building.

Stands to reason that anyone leaving in some haste would go by horse, as a train may not be an option, depending on the hour.
Mar 8, 2024 3:35 am
"What he means is that he is going to check on the stable while I cover him," she loudly corrects. Then she nods for Briggs to get a move on. "By the way, I didn't catch your name. It would be good to know so that I can shout it out dramatically if things take a turn for the worst." She gives a playful grin.
Mar 8, 2024 4:34 am

Dillon nods as she looks around -- for more signs of blood (in case someone or something tracked in it), for bullet holes, scratches, or other signs of wrongdoing or violence.

"Gun fired?" she asks idly as she turns to look at the lock and the door, wondering if it's the kind of mechanism one can only lock from the inside. If it is... that means whoever fled in here went out the window, or...

Crouching down, DD examines the floor, looking for a trap door -- including under the bed.
Mar 9, 2024 4:31 am
Looking around, DD sees the bullets holes on the edge of the window frame, from inside. Whatever happened, it's clear to her that something crashed through the window, into a hail of gunfire, but the shooter likely was taken.

Kane spends more time with the blood and comes to the conclusion that the blood is somewhat fresh, probably no older than 24 hours.

Is Briggs going to the barn all by his lonesome?
Mar 9, 2024 8:35 pm
"If we hurry, we could chase 'em, but then we'd miss the train. This blood here, ain't much older than a day. We could catch 'em, seein' as they're on foot. Maybe a kidnapper carrying the kidnapee. We could send Dirt after 'em on his fine steed."

Prompted by Delilah's question, he pulls the gun back out from behind his gunbelt and opens the chamber again, looking for powder residue, feeling very foolish for not thinking of that hisself.

Wiping his blood stained finger on his pants he goes to the window to see where the others are.

"I think we seen what we can here. Might as well take a gander at what the others are up to." Kane heads back out the door.
OOC:
Was the gun fired recently?
Mar 9, 2024 10:14 pm
Powder and the four spent cartridges in the loader tell Kane that the worker had likely fired it yesterday, and probably fired (at least) four shots. There are three bullet holes on the inside of the window frame, telling you three of those shots hit nuttin.
Mar 9, 2024 11:43 pm
Delilah rises up from where she's been looking under the bed, inspecting the floor, and checking the broken glass. "Yup, nothing good happened here. Someone or something came in through the window and nabbed the station manager, I'd say." Once last quick look around, then the would-be Marshal climbs back out through the window to rejoin the others as well.

"Well now Delilah, I'm curious. Why didn't you go out the easy way, through the door?" Kane asks with a chuckle once he is outside again and joined up with the others.

"What have the rest of you found?" he ask the others. "We seen a recently fired gun which I now have on my person. A Colt Navy .36 revolver. Four shots were fired about a day ago. Three bullet holes are in the window frame and there was an upside-down nightstand. Now one might ask where the fourth shot landed and I'd wager it landed in whoever was took and left the blood on the floor, be it the station master or some other poor fella or lady. But the bare feet? The claw marks. I can't rightly figgur any of that out. And I got this here lock box. Probably got the fares in it and it wasn't took, so it ain't the money they were after."

At this juncture, Kane removes his hat, wipes his brow, and replaces his hat. Withdrawing another hank of tobacco, he stuffs it in his cheek, glancing at Ruby, a smirk playing across his face.
Mar 10, 2024 4:50 am
Brushing any bits of glass and dirt off her hands, legs and arms, DD’s eyes are looking northward as she responds to Kane. "Just figure that whatever came in that way… went out that way as well. Might be a trail out here… where they went might be visible out here."

As she talks, the woman checks the immediate vicinity for blood, tracks, trampled grass and such, but also looks to the horizon for other structures or trails — anything that might be a destination or a further signpost to what might have happened.
Mar 10, 2024 3:59 pm
Delilah will notice the trampled vegetable garden as well when she goes out the back windder. A tracker might be able to figger something out of that mess.

Survival roll to learn something about the many tracks in the garden.

Dirt heads toward the barn. The unpainted, one-story barn contains two horse stalls and room for feed. The pen outside has a feed trough to the east and a gate beside the barn door.

A tired mare stomps nervously inside one of the stalls, and a couple of pigs remain in the pen. There are remains of food in the pig pen—corn cobs, some grain, etc..

"Thank you for checking the place out," Ruby says, suddenly in the entrance of the barn. "I would have felt guilty for a whole day if something were to happen to you. Why do you think a small station like this has some pigs? There can't be that big of a demand for bacon for one lone station manager, right?" She walks into the barn and walks up to the horse to give it a rub while its eating.

That there is an interestin' question, Ruby. Maybe they was feedin' the pigs to somethin' else. Somethin' with claws. Maybe whoever belongs to all them footprints got on the train? I gotta say, them claws, well they got me mighty troubled. And why are they barefoot? Beats the hell outta me."

Kane works the tobacco in his mouth. "Well, let's think about all this. What do we got? We got a horse in the barn fed yesterday, and pigs, we got pigs. We got twenty or so footprints headin' to the platform from the shack. We got a bullet that likely sunk into someone or something. Ain't no robbery cuz I got the lockbox. "A whole day?" Dirt says, with a grin. "That’d be too much, ma’am, believe me!"

Then he wonders on the pig question. He hadn’t even doubted it for a second, truth be told.

"Might be the man keeps pigs to pass the time. Not much else to do out this way, and trains come through but once in a while." but then Victor makes his suggestion, and it’s a grimmer suggestion than Dirt would hope for.

Besides the Marshal here, there ain’t none of us lawmen. Maybe we ought to rustle up some help to go chasing down them tracks? Men with badges on their shirts, I mean."
Mar 12, 2024 6:33 am
Standing, Delilah adjusts her hat, sighs, and puts her hands on her hips, listening to the banter between her companions.

"Seems like they... made off with him? Back t'wards the tracks. Maybe wrestled him onto a train?" she says more to herself than anyone else. She doesn't react to being called a Marshal again, but she does point at the outhouse, and respond to the question of the livestock.

"Some of them made a trip to the loo, there. We should have a look, just to be sure. And Folks raise animals way out on their own all the time. Raise 'em for the meat, or sellin' the offspring can be good business if the parents are good stock."
OOC:

"Or women with badges on their shirts," Ruby responds to Dirt with a hand on her hip, looking at Delilah. "But why abduct a station manager from such a small place in the middle of nowhere? And not even leave a ransom note? Something about this just doesn't feel right." When talk comes up about the loo, Ruby decides she should be at least a little proactive. "I'll check out the loo. I need to use it anyway." She saunters over to the outhouse and listens at the closed door.
Mar 12, 2024 2:47 pm
"Don’t disagree. Strange business here," Delilah says, edging closer to Reyes as she checked out the outhouse, backing her up. At the same time, she tries to put eyes on the engineer, see how he’s makin’ out.
Mar 12, 2024 3:37 pm
"It ain't for the money else they woulda taken the lockbox so I wouldn't expect no ransom note. We should bust it open, doncha think?"

He adds, "Sure, Ruby, go check out the loo, as Delilah calls it. But hold yer nose and be careful in case you get pulled down into it." Kane wasn't sure why he liked antagonizing Ruby. Maybe it was because she frowned on his tobacco use or maybe because she was a snake oil saleswoman. He wasn't sure.

Kane whips out the Colt he took from the shack and fires at the lock box that he had set on the ground.

Dirt jolts to attention again as the gun goes off. It’s not that he thought something had come upon them, but rather that something else… someone else… might have heard it, and come to investigate. He wondered if the train driver might be scared off by such a thing too, and frowns to himself. Then there was Blossom…

He steps over the man as he rifles through the lock box.

"Hell of a lot more than I’ve got on me." he says, with a whistle. He wondered what this soon-to-be-Marshal might think of them divvying up the dough!
Mar 13, 2024 2:23 am
Kane shrugs at Delilah's admonishment. "I had to test my new pistol."

Examining the contents, he declares,"Yup. Money sure wasn't the motive. Look what's inside this here box. On second thoughts maybe we can do that after we see what's going on in the outhouse. I hope my gunshot didn't startle her too."

Kane heads over there.
Mar 13, 2024 5:13 am
Delilah is looking to the inside of the outhouse with a handkerchief to her face when the men arrive.

"That there pistol, and that there money? They got an owner, Victor. He might be dead or worse, but still. Hold off playin' finders keepers until we understand what's happened to the poor man, and give a hand here, pry up them boards."
Mar 13, 2024 2:07 pm
"Well now Delilah, I ain't said nothing about keeping the lockbox. Doin' a bit of investigatin' is all. But the pistol ... well I've taken quite a shine to it. Yes, siree. If the owner is dead, he won't notice."

Kane takes the kerchief that's around his neck and pulls it up enough to cover his nose and mouth. Pulling out his Bowie knife he sets about the task of prying up the floorboards.

"Wheweee, that's a mighty stench!"

Finding rope and helping Kane get the body out of the outhouse water is difficult labor-wise, but you manage to get him tied off and hauled out onto the grass.

The body is likely of the stationmaster, but it will take some ponderin' to make sure of that for certain.

Give me a solid reason of investigatin' his identity and no roll will be required. If you want to determine a possible cause of death, you'll need to clean him up some and make a Healing roll.

"Reckon this fella must have a change of shirt and what have you." he says, before rushing of to grab a change of clothes for the man.

Ruby stays well back from the disgusting events unfolding in and around the outhouse. She has an embroidered handkerchief--embroidered with initials that are not hers--held to her nose and mouth the entire time. Once Kane is about to wash off, Ruby sighs as a glimmer of conscience overrides her drive to make money. She pulls out of her bag a dark green bottle labeled "Squeaky Clean Ablutions" and hands it over. "Use this when you wash. It'll get the smell out. On the house, just this once. Mostly because it will benefit myself to not have to smell you," she adds to make sure these people didn't think she just did things out of the kindness of her heart.

"Revenge, could be." he says, knowing he had been the avatar of many a man’s revenge in his time.

"To put a man in an undignified place like that…" he says, as if the idea is plain. Whoever did it didn’t like the man much, or wanted to hide him for just enough time to get away. Else they would have dug a hole in the desert for him.
Mar 15, 2024 2:20 pm
Kane had found some water to douse himself with and along with Ruby's "Squeaky Clean Ablutions" and a fresh set of clothes that Dirt had found for him, he went back to the shack and cleaned up. Being in there again set him to thinking.

Walking back to the group he said "We ain't checked the vegetable garden. And we still haven't figured out why so many people, some of them barefoot, might have been here in the first place and then there's them claws on the shack door. Ruby's right. We should rinse off the body and take a looksee. Maybe these folks wanted a free ride on the train and the stationmaster told 'em where to go for. They killed him, dumped him in the hole and got on the train."
Mar 15, 2024 5:14 pm
The engineer says he doesn't know Zeke well enough to reckon if he had it comin' or not.

Ruby examines the somewhat cleaned up body, and identifies a number of enormous, rat-like bites. However, if so, the creatures that made them would have to be nearly six feet long!
Mar 16, 2024 12:47 pm
Ruby squats down to inspect the body once he was washed up. Covering the body are large pairs of puncture marks close together, each one the width of a finger, and flat instead of round. "Well, I'll be damned. That's not something you see every day. See these puncture marks? Looks like bite marks from two flat front teeth. Something like a rat, beaver, or mole might make. Judging by the length of the punctures I'd say the animal must be about the size of a grown man. Sure hope that ain't right. Anyone hear about man-sized, buck-toothed rodents?" She stands up and looks at everyone.
Mar 16, 2024 2:48 pm
Kane thinks of the scratch marks on the door and the bare feet on the ground and an image begins to form in his mind. Something horrible and unnatural.

"Giant rats? Half human half rodent. A pack of 'em." The troubled man pauses and shoots a stream of vile tobacco juice into the dirt. "But why drag him into the latrine? And what in Sam Hell are they doing here anyway? I thought monsters were scary creatures children made up to scare their sisters. The poor station master musta been shootin' at 'em to protect hisself."

"See anythin' like that down the commode hole, Mr. Kane? Tracks or anythin'?"

There are no tracks other than what you've seen, leading from the station platform to the shack including the trampling of the vegetable garden and to the outhouse.

Checking far side of the train, you don't see anything where they came across land. Now, if they came along the tracks walking, that's harder to tell. You'd have to go up and down the tracks both ways a spell to look carefully for signs someone might leave between spars or what have you. Nothing you can see from near Barlowe Station.

Ruby crosses her arms. "Well I don't see much else to do here besides passing the info on to the authorities at the next town we reach."

So nothing, huh?" he says, rather than asks of DD and Dirt.
Mar 20, 2024 7:45 pm
"Not that I seen," Delilah answers, taking one last, long look around the area. "They definitely must’a come and gone usin’ the tracks, one way or another. Should we wrap up the poor man, get him aboard?"

You wrap up the body in a canvas sheet, and sure that the animals in the barn will be okay for a couple days, load back up on the train. Blossom is none too happy but goes back in with a few indignant snorts.

Varney Flats

Seldom do visitors bother to stop in Varney Flats, so the posse draws quite a bit of attention. The townspeople aren’t suspicious—just curious as to why anyone would stop in their little piece of Hell.

Founded two years ago, Varney Flats itself is little more than a water stop for locomotives traveling westward. The town hosts perhaps a few dozen permanent residents, with most respectable folk having long since moved on, but recently it’s gained a small boost from buffalo hunters.

The hunters use the town as a base for launching their hunting raids into the Coyote Confederation’s lands. This practice is frowned on by the US government and Coyote Confederation alike, but the revenue from the hunters is too great for the community to put a stop to it.

"My pleasure. Cant say this is what I expected to be doing when I boarded that train, mind."
Mar 22, 2024 4:01 pm
Up goes the kerchief after Kane loads up a fresh plug of tobacco, as he helps carry the deadweight of the deceased stationmaster.

"Me neither," Kane says to Dirt, wondering how in the heck he gets hisself into these crazy situations.
Mar 23, 2024 12:17 am
As you approach the Marshall's office, you see a man step out from beneath the shadows of the telepgraph building. He walks slowly over watching you enter the Marshalls.

There is a one-room office in the front which contains a desk, two chairs. and a bunk to one side. A rack on the wall beside the front door holds three Winchester ‘73 rifles and two double-barrel shotguns. A barred door to the rear of the office leads to a short hall with three jail cells. Currently only one of the cells is occupied.

Behind you, you hear the man from outside say, "I'm Deputy Parrish. That's a mighty suspicious looking parcel you're bringing the Marshall."
Mar 23, 2024 4:46 am
"Afternoon, Deputy," Delilah says, walking back out onto the porch as she dusts off her hands and skirts. "That there's a dead man is what that is," she says thumbing over her shoulder, indicating the corpse. "The station manager from Barlowe Station, just down the line there. We found the whole place abandoned when the train stopped to take on water, and it turned out someone -- or somethin' -- murdered this poor man. We thought the Marshal might want to know. He or she about?"

KCC

Mar 23, 2024 10:38 am
Dirt rubs his hands down the front of his shirt, in an effort to wipe the death off himself. He keeps his mouth shut while the two lawfolk talk things out. Sometimes the fellers they set up out these ways don’t like to hear much from the likes of Dirt.
Mar 23, 2024 3:24 pm
Kane does what he always does after chewing for a spell and spits out a long dark stream of tobacco before entering the office, noting the rifles and shotguns in the rack. Upon hearing the chatter outside, he goes back out.

"Howdy, Deputy. What Delilah here says is true. We came upon this poor man," he says, pointing to the body. "Dumped in the outhouse he was. Messy business getting him out of there."
Mar 23, 2024 3:37 pm
OOC:
Is it afternoon, btw?
Mar 23, 2024 6:49 pm
OOC:
Afternoon sounds about right.
Parrish spits in the dirt as if to get the outhouse stink out of his nostrils. "That's a hella way to go. Sheeeet, why you gotta bring him here? Nah, I know what you're saying. Let's find him a place to rest before we can bury him."

He leads you over to the church and has you place him just inside the fence of the graveyard, in the shade. "Marshall McBride headed out to check on the Larkin family homestead. It’s out where Knaggs did his business and no one’s heard from them in a couple of days. Oh, Knaggs. Lady you have the look of law about you. You interested in a job?"
Mar 24, 2024 4:23 pm
"Knaggs? Who would that be now?" Kane asks after Parrish answers his own question.
Mar 24, 2024 5:31 pm
The deputy looks at Kane, waiting for DD to respond, but he says, "He's the prisoner we have in the jail. The only one, but he's a murderer. "
Mar 24, 2024 6:22 pm
Something's off about Varney Flats, but Delilah Dillon can't yet put her finger on just what it is. Something's happened here, some tragedy, she can smell it. Her father always had that sixth sense, and always told his little girl she did too.

"Good eye. Come from a family of lawmen," the woman says to Parrish after he names Knaggs a murderer. There's been a killing then; at least one. "I'm just on my ways to Good Intent, if you know whereabouts that is. I've got a new job there -- Marshal. Meanin' I don't have no badge just yet, but tell me... what's the business? Goin' up to look in on these Larkins, after Marshal McBride?"
Mar 24, 2024 6:35 pm
"I got a little bit of a problem. As I was just sayin, there’s this murderer in the town jail, buffalo hunter named Abner Knaggs. Killed some settlers. He’s going to swing when the circuit judge gets here in a few days, but I’m afraid the townsfolk might not want to wait for the judge, if you know what I mean."

He opens the wrappings around the station master, examining him while he talks.

"You see, Mayor Varney hates the buffalo hunters. He thinks they’ll keep us from gaining ‘respectability.’ Knaggs claimed he was a buffalo hunter, but he was really a low-down dry-gulchin’ murderer. The mayor sees a chance to rile the town against the hunters and figures a lynching is just the thing for it."

He flinches at the stink, but sees the wounds, and whistles at the damage.

"Marshal McBride would've kept Varney in line, but he went out to check on the Larkin family homestead, as I said. It’s out where Knaggs did his business and no one’s heard from them in a couple of days."

He wraps the body back up and gathers dust and dirt to wipe his hands

"You and your friends help me tonight, keep an eye on the jail and scare off any lynchin posse that comes? I got a $100 in reward money for Knaggs I can give you. Marshall and I ain't eligible no how, since McBride brought him in himself. "

This was just the kind of work that Dirt was good at. The kind of work that he used to be good at, he reminded himself. Scaring off regular folk. Oh, they got angry once in a while, and came around full of piss and vinegar but a bullet over their heads usually let the piss out of them quick enough.

"This Mayor that might stop by… He got a lot of say in this town?" Dirt asks. The man was the mayor, so he supposed yes. "Trying to get a feel for how big a posse we might expect."

Kane looks at Dirt, Delilah, and Ruby, but his mind is already made up.

"We're here ain't we? I say we help Parrish. Hell, you're almost the law yourself Delilah anyways. Good practice."
Mar 25, 2024 2:27 am
"Mayor Sam Varney ain't neither pop'lar nor disliked. He'll have to work to get folks, er, worked up, but I'm worried he'll get enough to make it a problem."

"You set on gunnin’ folks down, if comes to that? Including that there Mayor." Dirt asks the uncomfortable question.
Mar 25, 2024 3:17 am
"I should hope not. A few shots over their heads is all it would take. Probably. These are good people, but I won't let them lynch a man just because they think that's a good idea."

"Fair enough, and understood." Dirt responded, and found that he liked the man well enough. He knew the way people worked, same as Dirt did. Only difference was how they ended up on opposite sides of the law.

Or had they? Dirt was fixing to uphold the law in Varney Flats after all…
Mar 25, 2024 4:23 am
"Sounds like a fair offer. Besides, I like crowds. Perfect for selling to," she grins with a glint in her eye. "Or if we want to be proactive, I can make some sales before a mob has a chance to form that should keep most of the men indoors..."
Mar 25, 2024 6:35 am
Dillon listens and squints a little as the deputy explains. She knew there was a sour stank on this town, and there it was. Seeing agreement from the others, she nods and says, "We'll help, it's the right thing to do. But tell me -- how'd he do it, and why, this murderer in the back?"

After Parrish answers, the woman tilts her hat back slightly and presses a few soft spots. "So you'll get goin' after the Marshal then, makin' sure everythin's a-ok at that ranch of them Larkins? Who else you consider an ally in this matter, this possible lynchin'? Who all might give us a wink if trouble's comin'?"

To her companions, she adds, "We'll need to see if the engineer will hold the train -- or I'll at least need to send word on to my gainful employers regardin' the delay." She likes the idea of distractin' the townsfolk, as well, and gives beautiful Ruby a quick nod. If anything can take mens' minds off a revenge killin,' it's legs like Reyes got.

"That's a good idear, that is, Ms. Ruby. We should meet them townsfolk where they are, in the saloon or the church, wherever they might congregate. Distract 'em, let 'em know the law ain't in their hands. Nip it in the bud-like."
Mar 25, 2024 7:11 pm
"I won't say no to a whiskey a tall, ma'am. That's for sure. You'll drum up some business for your potions and whatnot too I reckon."

Kane figures if he misses the train, what of it? He can just take the next one, or the one after that.

Dirt knew that people fought hardest when you went to where they were. Folk felt emboldened when they were on their home turf. Still, the woman carried or badge, or would soon carry one in any case. Maybe that meant something around here.

"Lead on then!" he says with a nod, and sets his face hard. Let the common man see his scowl from the outset and it might shake them up.
Mar 27, 2024 2:53 pm
The Palace Saloon

The deputy returns to his spot by the telegraph office to keep an eye on things and especially the jail.

You make your way to the saloon, ready to intervene in stopping any disorderly conduct and mob justice before it gets too free in the reins. A small number of folks have gathered, quietly sitting at tables, wiling away the afternoon heat. A pair of nearly-old timers sit drinking beer and playing whist. A well dressed man behind the bar polishes for glasses and puts them on the bar top, smiling broadly at you. "Welcome to the Palace. Can I pour you all a beer, or is whiskey your poison?"

Doesn't look like much of much is going on at the moment.
Mar 27, 2024 3:28 pm
Kane chuckles at the name of the joint. He'd hardly call it a palace. Still, it might be a place to the owner so he shouldn't judge.

"A whiskey for me. I'm parched."

Kane lets his eyes casually drift around the saloon, quickly assessing the patrons. Finding nothing out of the ordinary nor hearing the rumblings of an angry mob, he turns back to the barman.

"What do people do for fun around here?"
Mar 27, 2024 11:55 pm
He pours Kane a whiskey (and to anyone else who signals).

"Not much fun to be had. We got faro on Fridays. I call it," he gestures in the air as if describing a sign, "Faro Friday at the Palace. Gonna make a sign and everything. Get some excitement from train folk who think they can do what they please."
Mar 28, 2024 12:23 am
"Just a beer for me," Ruby says as she sits down. It is too early and too hot to be downing the strong stuff, especially with what they might have to deal with soon.

"It sounds like you don't have a high opinion of us train folk," she states casually.

KCC

Mar 28, 2024 6:30 am
"I’ll take one of them beers, too." Dirt says, with a flick of the wrist, and pointing to the spot in front of him on the counter.

"Train folk doing what they like?" Dirt says incredulous. "With a lawman like that in town? Fella just about talked my ear off, warning me not to get up to mischief while I’m here." Dirt goes on, throwing his eyes up to heaven and making himself seem awfully put out by the whole interaction.
Mar 28, 2024 3:17 pm
Jake Harding, Bartender
He slides beers in front of you, giving Ruby a couple extra blinks. "I'm not disparaging you folks. Some come through and think nothing about leaving a mess behind is all."

He sees a tall man come in and he gets a little grimmer. He moves off to pour another drink, and says, "My name's Jake, pleased to meet you all. Need anything, just holler "
Mar 29, 2024 12:45 am
"Make it three, sir," Delilah says to the bartender as he pours. She’s quiet as the others converse with the man, getting the lay of the saloon and a read on its occupants.

"Thank you Jake, you won’t get no trouble from us," the woman says after a moment as she sips her beer and raises it to the man in a silent cheers. Froth on her upper lip, she keeps an eye on the coming exchange…

KCC

Mar 29, 2024 2:59 am
Dirt takes a drink from his bottle, and nods to the man as he goes to leave. He drinks again, and raises an eyebrow to the others at the strange behavior.

He turns then, and puts his elbows up on the bar, and rests against the counter top, taking in the room. He spies the tall man that caused the sudden change in the bartender most of all.
Mar 29, 2024 5:02 am
Ruby takes a sip. "Don't look like Jake's expecting happy news from that fella."
Mar 29, 2024 12:49 pm
Kane knocks back his whiskey and thinks about tapping the bar counter for another but decides against it. He might be needing his wits about him.

"No it don't look like he has a high opinion of whoever he is. We could ask Jake about the feller? Might be a friend of Abner Knaggs. "
Mar 29, 2024 1:41 pm
Jake Harding, Bartender
He can't help but overhear and says, "That there's Sam Varney, the mayor. He's up to something, I can tell. I don't reckon I know what it is, but I don't like it."
Mar 29, 2024 10:41 pm
Sidling right up to the bar, the boots she wears under her skirt thumping lightly, Dillon sips at her beer and keeps her voice low-key as she addresses the barkeep.

"What’s his story? The deputy told us he has it in for the guy locked up in the jail. Said he might even try somethin’. He got some men in his employ?"

Jake Harding, Bartender

Qralloq

Mar 29, 2024 11:56 pm
Jake Harding, Bartender
Jake says quietly. "Well, what you got to know is Varney Flats was founded two years ago, and that's Varney. It's little more than a water stop for locomotives traveling westward, and only a few dozen folks live here, with most respectable folk havin long since moved on. But recently it’s gained a small boost from buffalo hunters."

He finds a mug to polish with his apron and continues.

"Now, those hunters use the town as a base for launching their hunting raids into the Coyote Confederation’s lands. Naturally, this practice is frowned on by the US government and Coyote Confederation alike, but the revenue from the hunters is too great for the community to put a stop to it."

It's becoming a little clearer. Deputy Parrish said Knaggs was a buffalo hunter and a murderer. "So Varney is just got his trousers in a knot about them hunters. Don't know what he's planning, but he's like a rooster struttin around lookin for a post to perch from and crow or my name ain't Jake Harding "

KCC

Mar 31, 2024 12:40 pm
Dirt looks at the soon-to-be-Marshal and asks:

"You thinking to put a stop to this quiet, before it starts up? Or you looking to call this fella out in front of the whole town?" he asks, knowing which he would choose.

Well, he knows what he might be tempted to do in a situation like this. But that wasn’t the law man’s way, he reckoned. It wasn’t his way anymore neither, but old habits die hard.
Mar 31, 2024 2:23 pm
Listening to the bartender Kane nods along, then nudges Ruby. "Maybe we ought to buy him a drink and you can charm him with your womanly wiles. Maybe make a sale even. Bring him down off his perch. Whadya think?"

He turns to the others to see what they think of the idea.
Mar 31, 2024 2:58 pm
Delilah takes another drink and shrugs, which gradually turns into a nod. She’s got her values and such, but the fact is that the brunette is pretty green when it comes to true peacemakin’. Her eyes are on the mayor, beneath the wide brim of her hat.

"Makes some sense. Hear the other side of the story and all. Maybe just defuse things long enough for the Marshal to get back. Calm the water and such."
Mar 31, 2024 4:04 pm
"Ayup, that's the idea. Buy some time." Now Kane does tap his finger on the bar for another round. Seems like things might be in hand soon enough.
Mar 31, 2024 8:11 pm
Varney chats for a while with others then leaves. Your not sure, but maybe he's coming back from his body language. Soon it's time for you to watch Knaggs for the deputy, and you're not certain what's going to happen.

All of you going to go to the Marshall's office, any gonna stand outside, or elsewhere?
Mar 31, 2024 9:48 pm
OOC:
Kane could stand outside and act as a guard.
Mar 31, 2024 11:55 pm
"You all go watch the prisoner. I'll see if I can talk to Varney and maybe dissuade him of starting anything. I have some concoctions that could mellow a man out, or make him take a nice long nap."

Apr 2, 2024 2:07 am
OOC:
If she’s on her own, DD will go to the Marshal’s and talk to the skid in jail.
Apr 2, 2024 5:17 am
"I think I can handle this. We don't want to appear too hostile and aggressive. It requires a deft touch, and maybe a strong tonic." She smiles.

I only now see that Nezz and I sort of cross-posted. Not that it matters much. Though maybe we are operating on two separate time lines now? One that has the event starting up, and one that has Nezz hoping to poison this fella back at the bar?
Apr 2, 2024 3:33 pm
OOC:
No separate time lines. That's big city talk.

So if I got it right, Kane wants to stand in front of the jail, DD may or may not go to the jail, Ruby is staying in the saloon, and Dirt is somewhere that has a front, either the bar or the jail maybe.
Apr 2, 2024 5:00 pm
OOC:
Yes, Kane thinks he will guard as the best use of his talents.
Apr 2, 2024 7:45 pm
OOC:
Ruby told DD "I got this," so Delilah is going to the jail for sure, to question the prisoner. And with Varney no longer at the bar (surprised me that we let him leave), I figured Ruby would go seek him out.
Apr 3, 2024 12:58 am
You all split up, covering various places. Delilah questions Knaggs, but he ain't sayin nothin, not keen on his chances with the judge for the things he's done. DD gets the impression the man is guilty as sin and is playing they only card he's got plenty: admit nothing and hope for a miracle

Dirt and Kane keep lookout, and Ruby tries to get into trouble.

She follows Varney to his shop, Varney's Mercantile, over around the corner by the saloon.

A tall man in his early forties, Varney’s black hair is beginning to gray at the temples. His confident manner, combined with a quick temper, make him an imposing figure.
Apr 3, 2024 2:26 am
Ruby enters the shop and takes a quick look around. "Nice place you got here," she says. Always open with flattery. "General stores are the heart of any town. But I'm looking for some un-general ingredients. Nothing illegal mind, just not something the average Joe needs. You wouldn't happen to have any dried saffron or potash?" Ruby flutters her eyelashes at him.
Apr 3, 2024 3:20 am
"Well aren't you a beautiful lady, welcome welcome, to Varney's Mercantile. I'm the proprietor, Sam Varney, and also they mayor of Varney Flats. Now saffron, that's an exotic spice, and I'm plumb out of that at the moment. Potash I can do. Got a three pound sack in the back. A tanner ordered it and well, he ain't come for it, so I'm happy to sell it to such a charming and refined lady such as yourself. "

He's flashy and charming, with the kind of engaging smile that draws in most folk and pushes away just a few.
Apr 4, 2024 1:59 am
"Welp, Dirt, you reckon we will have fight on our hands before too long, do ya?"

Kane rummages around in his pocket for another plug of tobacco. "That Ruby's quite a woman. I figure she can handle that Varney fella if not by charm then by one of her famous elixirs. Seemed to get me clean enough after that outhouse crap," he chuckles.

"We best listen and make sure though." Kane stands up near the door where he's sure he will hear any angry voices with plenty of time to do something about it.

KCC

Apr 4, 2024 7:04 am
"Well, don’t listen too closely now." he warns. "Ain’t nothing like a woman to keep a man from fighting. There also ain’t nothing like a woman to set a man to fighting neither, if he think another fella is sniffing around some." he says, with a smirk as the other man chews away.
Apr 4, 2024 8:15 am
"Well I think three pounds might be a little too much for a lady like myself, but I'd gladly buy a bottle's worth, if you don't mind portioning it out." Ruby then gives a big stretch, theatrically exaggerated to show off her lithe body and curves. "Train rides are not easy on the body, are they, Mr. Varney? What can a woman do in this town to loosen up?"
Apr 4, 2024 2:59 pm
Varney is about to offer a suggestion, but then he looks at his pocket watch. "Normally I'd suggest the saloon, but it might be a bit stormy out tonight. Unless you're keen on bringing a known murderer to justice. If you stand on the side of law and bringing peace to the area, then I might have a spot of fun in mind for you. How do you feel about lynching?"
Apr 4, 2024 3:54 pm
Making no progress with Knaggs, Delilah leaves the man in the lockup and exits the Marshal’s office. From the front stoop, she signals to the two men she’s been traveling with, indicating that she needs one of them to stand watch at the jail for a moment. If and when one of them does, the soon-to-be law woman heads for the train, there to retrieve the heavy canvas bag containing her long arms and ammunition. She’s hoping she won’t come close to needing it, but she’d rather have it and not need it than the other way ‘round…
Apr 4, 2024 3:55 pm
OOC:
Meant to ask — where’s the deputy at the moment?
Apr 4, 2024 4:20 pm
OOC:
Good question.
Deputy Parrish is in the Marshall's office. Spending time with him, or near him, DD gets the impression that the man is well read and lacks the temperament to make a good lawman. Instead, he immerses himself in dime novels and probably fantasizes about the exploits of Buffalo Bill and the like.
Apr 4, 2024 4:21 pm
Kane takes a step back. "You got that right Dirt. No point in takin' chances. You want a plug?" Kane asks as he is getting ready to put his tobacco back in his pocket.
Apr 5, 2024 3:06 am
Ruby opens her eyes wide in feigned surprise. "A lynching? You certainly have a way with women, Mr. Varney. I usually prefer first dates that don't end with death. I don't find lynching and law to be very synonymous words, if I'm being honest. The law tends to frown on vigilante justice. I also can't help but notice you said known murderer and not convicted murderer." She strolls to the window and looks up at the sky. "You know, it doesn't look like a storm is coming. Mayhaps the skies were read incorrectly and it would be a better night to take a woman out on the town?" It's always best to veil a threat in sugar.
Apr 5, 2024 4:09 am
"Tonight I'm unavailable, madame. If you're still in town tomorrow, I'll treat you to the finest meal this side of the Coyote Federation. But tonight, I've got much to do, as much as it will pain me to be parted from your indelible and sublime ... character."
Apr 5, 2024 4:54 am
"That's unfortunate. I came in on the train and just stopped to make sure the body of the station master of Barlowe was safely delivered and I'll be on the next train out again. Did you hear about that? He was killed by some kind of large animals. We found some of their tracks headed this way. Might not be safe out of doors once the sun goes down." If honey didn't work, maybe some vinegar would do the trick.

"Not for me, but thank you!" Dirt says. There was a part of him that wanted to reach out and take some. But it felt like the old him: Chewing on something while putting the screws to some fella who hadn’t paid up on time. Leave a nice big wad of it spat on a fella’s boot as a parting insult.

"You go on now, Marshal!" Dirt says, moving over to give the woman peace of mind. "I’ll keep an eye!"
Apr 6, 2024 4:02 am
Varney nods, processing that news. "That's a darn shame is what that is. No animal will enter a town even one as small as this one is."

It's possible Ruby can convince him to follow her suggestions. Care to make an appropriate roll? A success will get you something. A raise will get you a chance at heading this confrontation off.
Apr 6, 2024 4:50 am
DD nods and tips her hat respectfully to Dirt before departing to get her guns. "Deputy's inside, nose-deep in some book or other. Much obliged, Mr. Briggs."

On the way to the baggage car, Delilah searches the small train station with her eyes. If there's someone inside, she'll stop to query them a bit, see if they know or saw anything regarding the on-the-loose and evidently on-the-tracks barefoot murderers...

Dirt had been expecting a fight, but a fight never came. Probably for the best, if he wanted to break from the old life. Wouldn’t be right to leave a trail of bodies all the way to his new abode.

By the middle of the night, he’s getting lax in his watch, but he keeps himself awake at the very least. He paces out front, counting his steps on the wood to keep his eyes from getting too heavy.
OOC:
Since I’m here first, I’ll take first watch and not be sleeping!

Ah, I should make it auto explode somehow!

Ruby definitely gets her beauty sleep and since she takes a night out on the town, she is not on watch rotation. But before she gets to sleep, she hears the ghostly wailing of an eerie train whistle. "What now?" she grumbles to herself. She heads out to see who's on watch and to see if they heard what she did.

Dirt hears the wailing and it startles him from his relaxed watch. Not knowing what it was, decides to shake Dillon back to the land of the living.

"Reckon something awful just happened." he says, as a warning to get the woman in the right frame of mind.

When the chime goes a second time, he feels a bit stupid, especially with Ruby out to check on things too.

"I’m sorry, Marshal! I thought it was a woman. Reckon it’s just the next train coming through. You get yourself back to rest."
Apr 7, 2024 2:33 pm
On his watch, Kane had a chance to assess things. No one had addressed the barefooted folks, if they were even folks at all. He chewed on that whole situation for a spell but came to no solid conclusions. Later when the creepy train whistle blew, he had an inkling, almost a premonition, that they might be connected.

"You heard that to did ya, Ruby? Mighty odd I'd say."
Apr 7, 2024 4:09 pm
Dillon is quick to rise, though her head is a big foggy. She slept with her boots on, so getting up, putting on her gun belt and setting her hat straight is all that's really required for her to join the party.

"It's alright, Mr. Briggs. It's -- what is that? A train whistle?"

Listening more carefully, and doing some mental calculations that include the strange scream of that whistle, what they found at Barlowe Station and some stories told to her by her pa, DD pulls her Winchester from the bag she brought from the train.

"Suggest we prepare for anything," she says as she checks to make sure the weapon is loaded.

KCC

Apr 8, 2024 11:14 am
"As you say." Dirt responds with a resigned sigh, before gritting his teeth and checking his own weapons. He supposed the Marshal must be worried that the train is the key to the whole mystery, and it might be coming down the track to make itself known right this minute!
Apr 8, 2024 1:08 pm
The train reaches Varney Flats less than 10 minutes after the second whistle. Anyone watching the tracks sees a train come to a halt at the station, an easy feat from the Marshal's Office.

The train appears old and weather-beaten from a distance. Behind the locomotive and coal tender are three other cars. The first two are windowless "sleeper" cars and the last is a freight car.

The train sits for a moment, the locomotive softly huffing like a great, panting beast. Then the whistle once again splits the night air. Closer, it’s wail sends a chill down your spines.

Immediately after the shadows grow a bit darker and the night air chills, doors at both ends of the sleeper cars burst open. Thirty frenzied people pour out of the train and into town looking for blood.
Apr 8, 2024 2:11 pm
The creatures are going to spread throughout the town and even to the buffalo camp off to the side. That is, it won't likely turn into some kind of mass battle, but a series of chaotic skirmishes. It's also dark and hard to see what is going on.

A dozen or more come toward the Marshal's Office and then split up. Two try to get into the building you're in, rattling the locked door.

Your move.

"Marshal! We got raiders, looks like!!" Dirt calls, already holding his pistols up and leading the figures so he can get a shot off.

"I can’t see their feet too good, but there’s a lot of them!" he shouts, and opens up with both pistols on the ones that try to barge into the law office.
OOC:
I think a few of us are outside as it is, right?
Apr 9, 2024 5:22 am
"Is it too late to go back to sleep?" she grumbles as the train disgorges a horde of crazies into town. "I have a bad feeling a lot of people are going to die tonight. Let's not be one of them. We need to barricade here and make a defensible position." Ruby moves to close all doors and windows, locking them if possible, moving furniture in front of them if not.
Apr 9, 2024 5:53 am
"I see 'em!" DD calls from the window she'd been looking out since the train arrived. "This must be the same crew that did in the poor station manager in Barlowe Station! We need to warn the townsfolk!"

Delilah nods and says, "Good idear," when Ruby starts barricading, and then the woman works the lever on her '73 and levels it at the door where two of the fiends are already pounding.

"Y'all gots till the count of three out there to back off or we open fire! One! Two!"
OOC:
She'll shoot after one if they stay at the door. Also, did we get a good look at them? Are these insane living folk or wild undead of some kind? The idea here is also that shooting should wake the town, give some people a fighting chance.
Apr 9, 2024 3:51 pm
As they get to the door, you think they're definitely some kind of undead. Feral, unholy, ravenous. The two fling themselves at the door, hellbent to tear it from its frame.
OOC:
Let's assume you're all inside for the start of this, as you took turns sleeping and keeping watch
Apr 9, 2024 4:11 pm
Kane had his ever present Big 50 at the ready when he heard the strange whistle. Wheeling around he pointed the muzzle at the feral creatures and fired at one of them as they came inside.

"Well I'll be a skunk's smelly sack, I hit that thing center mass and I don't think it even felt it. Anyone got some stronger firepower? I might be able to whip up a flaming cocktail..."
Apr 13, 2024 9:16 pm
"There's more firepower right there against the wall!" DD shouts as she takes aim at the hole in the middle of the door, and as she waits for the remaining creature to present itself in that ragged gap. The Sharps was none-too-kind to the wood, and Briggs and Ruby had poured it on as well.

Her Winchester roars and belches flame, smoke and lead twice when the woman works the lever, fires, then works it again and fires a second shot. The action is like butter on that gun, and as the spent brass flies it's clear Delilah knows how to handle the rifle...

"I don't know if they wanted in the man in the cell specifically," Ruby says as she tries to clean her gun. Apparently the grease was thicker than she expected and it had jammed her gun. "They're vampires, they likely wanted to get all of us. We should make our way to the town church, if there is one. It'll likely be free of the bloodsuckers and might have a supply of holy water and crucifixes." With her gun finally clean, she holsters it and closes her trunk back up.

Crossing the small office's wooden floor with purpose, her boots thumping, Delilah opens her waxed canvas duffel and loads in the rest of the guns from the rack after handing a shotgun insistently to Reyes. "Y'all are gonna need this, Ms. Rudy. That there peashooter is good in a pinch against a misbehaving customer, but it's no better than barkin' at a knot against them vampires. Take this, hold it real steady when you fire it -- she'll kick."

When the subject of the prisoner comes up, the tall and busty brunette who hopes to soon wear a badge on her chest shakes her head. "Not leavin' him here. That's a death sentence, and we got no right. We'll cuff him, put him in irons -- and take him to the church."
OOC:
Taking allllll the guns and ammo that are here... are there handcuffs or irons or something we can slap on the prisoner? After that, suggest we look outside, time it, and make a break for the church, gathering any loose townsfolk as we go, also quietly spreading the word for that to be our defense point.
Apr 19, 2024 5:07 am
Ruby takes the gun but then raises an eyebrow. "You don't think moving him out in the open clapped in irons won't be a death sentence? If we get attacked he is dead weight for us and he'll be unable to defend himself."

Dirt had doubts about whether his life couldn’t be replaced. Or rather, that it was worth going to great lengths to save in the first place. He kept those thoughts to himself, as he always had.

He didn’t fancy the idea of crossing the open with his hands tied behind his back, and so he sympathized with the fella in the cell. He supposed he didn’t have what it takes to be a lawman. That’s probably why he had ended up going the other way in life!

"Might be alright if we keep him between us! Making sure he can’t be picked off, I mean!"
Apr 19, 2024 2:52 pm
"How 'bout y'all quit pussyfootin' around, make a decision and get a move on to the church?" Victor suggests strongly as he glares at the group. "Wastin' time right now is a recipe for a bad death. He ain't runnin' off. We're his only protection. Now let's git!"
Apr 19, 2024 10:59 pm
Knaggs argues some but in the end accepts being chained to being left behind.

You step outside and here the fighting wind up. Between you and the church, you see three of the creatures dragging some people fighting and struggling ineffectively, a family it looks, down the street toward the train.
Apr 20, 2024 5:55 am
"Stay close to us, it's your only chance, Knaggs," Delilah says as they advance up the street, a little cluster of people bristling with guns. Seeing the family in distress, she moves straight towards them and their vampires captors, intending to open fire...

Ruby looks down and scowls at the shotgun. It wasn't the shotguns fault (probably), of course, but Ruby and firearms just didn't mix well. Well, at least the church was her idea. The sooner she gets there the sooner she could fashion some "holy Molotov cocktails". The name needs some work. "Revered Reyes Rumrunners"? She'd workshop it. "Speaking of, let's get to safety ourselves."

Outside the church you hear the town grow more and more uppity. Backing in, and bringing in a few more that join your group, you enter the church and hold the door.

Kane will have to spend the round reloading his black powder Sharps Big 50. For some reason, the stat block on your pregen is incomplete, and the Sharps has three Reload 3 property. You can make at most three actions in a round, so it takes a full round without moving to reload it. Or you can combine that with an action at the normal Multi Action penalties to fire and reload (partially) in one round.

The vampires continues to savage DD and Dirt Briggs, committed to mindless feral rage.

May holy Mary, the angels, and all the saints come to meet you as you go forth from this life. May Christ who was crucified for you bring you freedom and peace."

Outside, the battle rages but soon you hear the shouts turn more triumphant and then screams of horror and grief begin in earnest. The dark locomotive blasts its screeching whistle and chugs off down the tracks.

As the citizens gather in the streets, you hear the terrifying news.

"They took Mary-Lou!

Both my kids, they got my kids, oh lord protect them!"

Out of all, only the four, now three of you killed any, responsible for eight dead vampires.

"You really got it in for this guy. I hope you've got some iron-clad evidence against him. We'll take him back, but you be ready with that money." Before taking him back, however, Ruby stoops by one of the piles of ash that are the vampire remains and scoops up a bottle's worth. She holds it up and explains, "Vampire ash. A potent ingredient indeed." She packs it away and turns to the others. "Let's get this show on the road then."
May 5, 2024 5:30 pm
"Potent ingredient for what, if you don't mind me askin', Ruby?"

He agreed with the woman about the deputy's level of dedication when it came to keeping Knaggs contained.

"We'll be wantin' that money you owe us, as the lady said, deputy.

Sam Varney comes out of his shop, thumbing cartridges into his double barrel shotgun.

When Deputy Parrish explains what he's said, Varney sweetens the pot. "A bounty of $20 from his own pocket for every citizen of Varney Flats they bring back alive."

Before negotiations get too involved, the deputy stresses if the train gets too much of a lead the heroes may never overtake it. Then he swallows deeply and says, "I’m goin’ with you." From the look in his eyes, the deputy cannot be dissuaded.

When your posse accepts the town’s offer, Parrish tells you the tracks curve to the north about four miles out of town. If you leave immediately and cut across the prairie, you may be able to catch it by cutting the curve.

"Now Deputy…" Dirt starts, as the man gets ready to depart with them. "You saw how many of those things there were on that train. You got anyone else both willing and able to take up arms? Hell of a thing to try gun down so many of them by ourselves.

As a matter of fact, we ought to recruit the preacher! He seemed to do the trick!"

Kane didn't take too well to highfalutin words like alchemical, and he still doubted that Ruby's potions were anything but hocus-pocus, yet he humored the woman with a nod of feigned interest.

"You're right. We best be on our way. Recruitin' a preacher is a mighty fine idea, Dirt."

OOC:
Preacher is definitely on the menu.
May 13, 2024 9:41 pm
With the Preacher offering to join you, you've got a fast ride across the prairie to try n cut off the train as it goes around a long corner.

Several of you have horses, but if you don't, you can double behind someone, or you can waste a bunch of time trying to find another horse in town that's rideable.

First, Dirt and DD had horses. Don't think Ruby or Kane did. One of you could take DD's horse, then there others could double. Either way, everyone will have to make a roll, whether they're ridin (Ridin at-2) or passengerin (Athletics at -2) to not fall off.
May 13, 2024 11:22 pm
"I do not have much skill in riding. If one of you gentlemen would kindly let me ride with you?" While she waits for the horses she quickly prepares a small satchel to take with her since she won't be able to take her whole trunk on the horse. She smiles at the mental image of riding a horse with her steamer trunk lashed to the horse's rear.
May 13, 2024 11:41 pm
"Well Ruby, why don't you hop right up behind me and we can get going. You'll want to be putting your arms around my waist or you'll fall off and get mud in that pretty hair of yours and that would be a cryin' shame."

Kane removes his foot from the stirrup, smiles and waits for her to offer a hand to him. "Put your foot in the stirrup, and I'll pull you up. I promise I won't chew while you are up here with me. Truth be told I don't partake while in the saddle. Horses don't like it. And you don't neither. Might be best if you leave your satchel with Dirt though."

"Sposin’ you might, seeing as how you probably visit all them folks out in the land." Dirt drones on, just talking to fill his mind with something, so he doesn’t have to wonder if any of them will come back from this.

Alright! Reverend Turner is done! He's basically a man of God with a past. He's going to tap that tonight. Also, he believes God speaks directly to him, and he's got some command / leadership skills that will make it easier to unshake, folks!
Reverend James Turner is grim-faced as he leaves the church. He's just said last rites over that pretty young Marshal and a number of his neighbors. Turner is a man with a past, and though he walks with a limp and has a wheeze in his lungs, he has put more men in the ground over his life than he'd ever care to admit. It's time to dig deep and become that man again, if he can.

God had started speaking to him directly lately, having quiet conversations at night, when he was out for his walk. It must have been a sign. That the Reverend had to step forward and do something about these devil-spawned vampires. And so the man buckled on Dillon's gunbelt, took her shotgun and shells and headed for John Jacobs's stables. John was dead, his throat torn out by a vampires, so he wouldn't miss his horse none.

"Ya, come on son!" Turner shouts as he rides up to Briggs, a silver cross hanging around his neck, gleaming in the moonlight. When he catches sight of Ruby on the back of Kane's horse, his rough cheeks color.

"When this night of terror is all done," he says to the air, "someone get this lady some proper clothing, cover her up! But now, time's a wastin', let's ride!"

It has been a hard night riding as you thunder across the plain. The four of you on three horses soon come across the Night Train. It's steaming along, powered by Ghostrock, the diabolic scent catching your air.

The locomotive is a huge, iron behemoth. Its black iron seems somehow darker than the night, and its jagged cow catcher resembles the blood tipped fangs of some enormous monster. Ghost-rock vapor streams from its stack, wailing in agony as it pushes the iron monster forward. Behind the engine sits a coal tender. Behind that, two sleeper cars and a freight car.

It's going fast, not as fast as a horse can go, but pretty fast.

Turner is Fatigued from the ride, the rest of you are fine.

What's the plan?
May 17, 2024 3:12 am
"So, what's the plan?" Ruby has to yell to be heard over the sounds of the thundering horse hooves and the howling wind. "We can't exactly just stop a train even if we get ahead of it! We might just have to board it!"

Old Reverend Question Period! How many cars long is the train? Are there lookouts of some kind on the roof or at the caboose? Can we see in the windows / is it lit inside? Are these passenger cars, box cars, flat cars, open-topped gondola cars...?
May 17, 2024 3:10 pm
Behind the engine sits a coal tender. Behind that, two sleeper cars and a freight car.

Finding a spot to board the train will be no cakewalk. The options are a ladder at the back of the freight car, between any of the cars themselves, or at the locomotive.

The back of the freight car has an entry portal, but it is welded shut and has no platform beneath it. There is a side door on the freight car, but it is currently closed.

There are no lookouts or windows.
May 18, 2024 5:46 pm
The Reverend has struggled to keep up, and grimaces as old injuries and wounds begin to act up — just as the train comes into sight.

"God Almighty, she’s steamed straight out of hell itself!" he shouts to the others as they close in, and as they see that there are limited way to board the fearsome thing. More shouting follows.

"What’s the plan? Board from the rear?!"
May 18, 2024 11:01 pm
Ruby shouts, "The rear looks welded shut! We could maybe get in through the side door. We'd have to pull it open. But then we'd be jumping in one by one into a group of vamps! This seems like suicide. We can just follow the train until it stops or until daybreak."

"I think those creatures don't like the light so maybe we stay away from the windowless car."

He shouts only loud enough to be heard by the group, then wishes he hadn't for he had heard tell that vampires have much better hearing than mortals, if you believed all that hocus pocus. But weren't they confronting those very monsters now, and hadn't they seen them in the flesh or whatever it was that held their bones together? Sometimes characters may want to cooperate or help an ally with a task. If so, and the GM decides it’s possible, supporting characters roll the relevant skill (on their action if the game is in rounds) and declare which of their ally’s skills they’re attempting to Support.

Success grants the ally +1 to one skill total this round, and a raise adds +2. A Critical Failure on the support roll subtracts 2 from the lead’s total—sometimes extra hands just get in the way!

Note: the assistance skill doesn't have to be the same as the tested skill, of it makes sense otherwise. If you're rolling Strength to assist, you won't apply the -4 to your assistance roll.

Rolling Vigor vs the damage
Dirt did 10 and 11 (with the Drop)
Preacher did 19
Kane did 28
All four vampires explode into dust as the posse aims and hits their hearts. The echoes of the sudden gunfire ricochet throughout the freight car. The townsfolk gasp, nearly scream them realize they're spared a blood draining, for now.

You hear the shriek of vampires from the next sleeper car, responding to the gunfire.

The townsfolk all turn and look at the door you came in, expecting reinforcements any second.

"Oh lord, they're angry now!"

What do you do?

Reverend James uses the few seconds of reprieve to break open and top-up the shotgun with a shell -- while at the same time putting himself in front of the innocent, shielding them from the doorway at the other end of the car where they expect more fiends to enter.

"Out the back, my flock!" he shouts. "We might have to jump if we can't separate the cars!"

Ruby nods. "We got what we came for. We can jump out the back. Going to have to tuck and roll. Might get a bit banged up but better than getting our throats ripped out. I can start a fire at the opposite end of this car that might buy us some time." She rummages in her sack and soon withdraws a flask of alcohol.

"Fire might work, if the holy water won’t keep them back!" Dirt says, though he’s tempted to simply try and unhitch the damn thing himself, to save injury and death from a daring jump off the train.

"Hold on a second!" he decides then! "I’m going to try and pull us free! If they come through, you toss that fire and get to jumping!"

He nods his head, and stoops down to try and free the damn contraption from itself. There must be a knack to it!

Do you get anything for playing into Hinderances (Death Wish)? +10 to a roll, maybe?

The townsfolk gather around you, expressing their fears at jumping from a moving train, when Briggs launches forward and has a go at the coupling. With a titanic effort, he pops the clasp and the sleeper car ahead of you begins to pull away.

The sleeper car door opens and several vampires stick their heads out, hissing and shrieking as their snacks are stolen. None of them try the leap, though, but just shriek in anger as the rest of the train pulls away.

Ruby eyes dirt with reappraisal. "That was mighty impressive," she says when he's back in the train car. "Now we just have a long walk back to town. And we gotta warn a railway station that there'll be a stalled car on the tracks."

"Well I'll be, Dirt. That was somethin'. How'd ya get that strong?" Heaving a sigh of relief he watches the ugly vampires and sneers at 'em as they grow further and further away.

"We showed 'em, bigtime. We all played our parts and by golly we done good." Turning to the townspeople he smiles, brown teeth and all. "Y'all alright, folks?"

"Must have been the Padre’s pleas to the almighty!" Dirt says, feeling awkward at all the praise!

How long did all this occur within, would we say? Between the jump and the disconnect! Wondering if the horses are within whistling distance!

Clapping Briggs on the shoulder, the Reverend smiles broadly. "The Lord worked through you, son! Truly! That was a miracle!"

He then turns to the townsfolk to treat bites and other injuries, while asking them, "Is this everyone? Were there others they took, further up the train?"
May 31, 2024 7:25 pm
The townsfolk confirm that everyone is here, at least that they know of. Of the two feasted upon when you entered, they're still alive but have lost a lot of blood, which means they're all here, and all alive.

As the freight car slows to a stop, you might be able to call one of your horses, a well trained one might hear your whistle.

Clapping Briggs on the shoulder, Turner finishes treating his congregation members as best he can, then he keeps lookout at the front of the now motionless train car. He'll watch for vampires as the others wrangle up the horses...

Ruby moves among the citizens with the priest and sees to their wounds. She has a bottle of antiseptic and a few rags she can clean their wounds and make impromptu bandages. She couldn't believe they got out of that alive and with everyone rescued. She keeps a wary eyes on those bitten, however. Ruby wasn't sure exactly what is true about vampires and doesn't want her ignorance to catch her off guard.

"You run out of that there antiseptic, I got some liquor left if you need it. I don't know squat about healing injured folks though, especially from vampire wounds."

Kane stick close to Ruby to offer support while keeping his eyes open for any more of the blood-sucking fiends.

OOC:
Benny's for everyone for the heroic rescue, and a bonus Benny for Dirt for leaning into his Hindrance.
You get off the freight car and recover your horses a half mile behind you, then walk back to town. When you return, shouts ring out across the prairie, and you find the people of Varney Flats rush out to help you escort them back.

The mayor with agreement from the others says you can stay in Varney Flats for as long as you please, free of charge. You suspect rightly that Varney doesn’t want word of the incident getting out and asks the heroes to keep a lid on it, as he believes it would forever ruin the town’s chances of growing beyond its current one-and-a-half horse status.
This is the end of the first adventure. The book has three connected ones. If you'd like to continue, take an Advance and we'll start the next one.
