Character Creation

Mar 16, 2024 5:56 am
Here is where players will roll up and can fine-tune their PCs. As mentioned in the Session Zero thread, please create one PC to play and one backup, which you can switch to and from at the Keep as needed/desired.

Things to remember:
- Both Basic and Advanced characters are allowed to adventure together. Advanced characters may multiclass in any legal combination.
- Once stats are rolled, you can either swap two scores or increase Prime Requisite(s) the normal way. If your stats are really hopeless (all negative modifiers, extremely low scores in half your stats, etc.), feel free to reroll.
- When considering Constitution score, be aware that the "Limits on Returning from Death" rule is in effect.
- Based on feedback from Session Zero, we'll be using Item-Based Encumbrance and Target 20 (since it was a tie, I think this method combines the best of both).
- When rolling for starting HP, reroll ones and twos—unless you want a true challenge 😎 lol
- Don't forget to roll or pick a secondary skill
- For arcane spellcasters, see the "Advanced Spell Book" rule
- If you consider lore while making your character, don't hesitate to ask for any information you need.

Below is the character sheet we'll be using, copied from the public repository. The only change I made was putting "Race/Class" instead of just "Race" to reflect our use of Advanced characters.

Got it, boss. Rolling for my two PCs.

PC 1 Base
STR 12, INT 13, WIS 11, DEX 10, CON 15, CHA 9

PC 1 - Swapping STR and INT, making a Knight
STR 13, INT 12, WIS 11, DEX 10, CON 15, CHA 9

PC 2
STR 9, INT 9, WIS 10, DEX 9, CON 7, CHA 13

PC 2 - Swapping CHA and CON, making a portly Illusionist
STR 9, INT 9, WIS 10, DEX 9, CON 13, CHA 7

Musing attribute switches and classes now... see above. Going Knight and Illusionist. Will try to get these two finished up and submitted tomorrow.

Addendum for magic-users: you may pick your own spells of course, and wield a staff if you want.

For the Dwarven Con Bonus to Saves, do you care if we just calculate that in our sheets? Or would you rather us keep it as an ability, separate?
Mar 16, 2024 1:54 pm
I don't mind if you just calculate it, since you probably won't forget it's factored in.
Mar 16, 2024 3:14 pm
Final question, how do you feel about War Dogs? ;)
Mar 16, 2024 3:40 pm
That's a good question. To be honest, I've never had to think about them before. I saw some neat rules on Reddit that say to treat them like a retainer since they adventure and fight for you, even in dungeons. Of course you don't have to pay or share treasure with them, but they do need to eat. I would also bump their starting loyalty up by +1 to reflect their naturally-bred trust. I would say they get into trouble a little more where instinct would take over, but you can roll a loyalty check to test your training.

I just noticed that Darlene does not meet the minimum Cha for a half-elf (9). May I lose two points of Con to raise Cha by 1? If this is not permissible, I will have to change her race to elf.

Natassia and Darlene are submitted for approval. They still need equipment, which I will get in the next day or so.

Unfortunately no, but if you want a half-elf I see you can swap one of the 12s for Cha and still have a high Prime in Wis. Or you can make her an elf.
Looking good so far, everyone; going to be reviewing your characters in detail soon.

Still fine-tuning, but submitted Sir Norris and Delfarious.

Friends, I’m a bit confused on the Inventory section of the Sheet. Can someone walk me thru how we fill it in, and how we use the Movement Rates in middle column?

I got you fam!

The left column shows items you have ready. Weapons, armor, etc. You get three slots before you are slowed. Starting below the red areas, just fill them in and compare to the speed on the right!

The right column is all of your other gear. Starting at your Strength score, work your way down. A Str 10 character gets like 16 slots, and you get to apply your Str mod to the number. So start at your STR and work down, then compare to the left to see your speed.

If one of the columns moves you into a lower speed, you're stuck with that. If they both do, it doesn't make things worse.

One-handed weapons take one slot, light armor (leather) takes one slot, shields take one slot. Two-handed weapons take two slots, heavy armor (chain and plate) take two slots. Backpacks take one, torch bundles take two, rations take three.

It might help if the DM provides a screenshot of the inventory list with encumbrance.

I wasn't sure how to use it either. So the sheet is set up for the slot-based inventory our GM wants to use?
Mar 17, 2024 3:40 pm
Answered my own question. Tis. Cool!

And here!

Thanks for the help, cowley and Harrigan. I'm glad it's making sense for everyone.

I have a note about backpacks and sacks. How I'm reading them is that they're used to account for what's in your packed list. Every packed item needs to be in a backpack or sack, otherwise it would be equipped and not packed. Backpacks hold four slots, large sacks six, and small sacks two. That's why they don't count when they're full.

Basically, you should note which backpack or sack each packed item is in, and remember that it will become a slot when empty.
