2.2 Chapter 2: Stag Lord

Jul 2, 2024 7:30 pm
With a charter in hand from Swordlord Lady Jamandi Aldori, the group has rushed to into the wilds of the Stolen Lands. Arriving at the isolated trading post operated by Oleg and Svetlana Leveton in there hour of need. With deft planning and brave heroics the group has managed to fend of a raid and strike at the northern camp for bandits loyal to the mysterious Staglord, gaining the eternal gratitude of the Levetons.

Challenges remain before the group can enact the charter to rule these untamed lands. There is the threat of the Staglord and his minions of course. However, the very wilds of the land presents inherent dangers from wild beasts & monsters to the numerous fey who angered by the Staglord and indiscriminate in the targets of revenge. Time may not be on the groups side, as the Swordlord presented numerous charters to other who seek to claim the lands for their own.

Pharast (March) 4th

After the assault on the Thorn River Bandit camp the group spends a few days to considerate. Sharing information, interrogating prisoners, collecting herbs, bolstering defenses, training etc. The hosts, Oleg and Svetlana, prepare for the return to normal trading after months of raids from the bandits. A few trappers and hunters begin to visit the fort for limited trade.

The group find itself in another discussion of strategy and plans over lunch and map marked with colored chalk.

"I like Dalia's booze plan" Harrim reaffirms
"Only because it will provide booze for you to drink too" Jeathal replies
"I can like multiple aspects of a plan, it will take time to get in some bottles from the city. We should enact that now." Harrim retorts
"It doesn't matter, we don't know where the Staglords fort actually is, and we know less about how to get there." Valerie says
"Sure we do, Kessle says it is here" Linzi says pointing to the lake in the middle of the map
"Drawing big color mismatched arrows on a map is not the same as a tactical plan, we need to scout" Valerie says while eying Linzi
Jul 3, 2024 8:42 pm
If we're ordering stuff I'll order a small mirror and a 6 gp gemstone so I can have a magic light. Anyone else who wants one could order their own magic light gem for me to spell too.

I will also point out to our bickering friends that I may be able to communicate with the fey again to help us find the place since they very much want us to help.
OOC:
how good of a sense did I get from the vision/dream of where it was?
Jul 4, 2024 6:40 pm
"Trade wagons usually pass in the middle of the month. These have stopped with the bandit raids, but some letters will get the wheels rolling again" Svetlana tells Silene "I'll put the request in. We will even spare you the service fee for all you have done"
Jul 4, 2024 6:55 pm
"Oh, I want to be friends we fey, that is the stuff of heroics" Linzi replies "At the very, rulery, least, we can make peace the surrounding fey for when we found our republic. Any idea how to find them"

Searching her mind Silene has no sense of how to find the mysterious nymph. Her sense is the the figure is everywhere and nowhere. In the wind or in the land, but distance somehow.

Delayed Silene hardly notices Filbert jumping up and down "I know, I know" he shouts as he scrambles onto the table "I'll use our deep bond to sense for you". Fiblert walks over to an open map, closes his eyes, spins three times and bring a barky claw to point at a location "There"

Looking at the map, Linzi says "That is Restov, I am not sure if a nymph is hanging out in the big city"
Jul 5, 2024 4:28 pm
I'm not sure we should wait until the middle of the month for this. We could always kill a deer and bring that meat in instead. Use some herbs that would work as the antidote for ourselves. Have Kessle go in with us to introduce us as new recruits after the battle at the camp.
Jul 6, 2024 12:43 am
Having fought Kessel, I'm disinclined to trust her introducing us to the Stag Lord. She's an unrepentant criminal. She'll turn on us a what she thinks is the best opportunity for personal gain, or entertainment. I do not like the idea of relying on Fae allies, but at least we can trust them to be consistent in their behaviour, if not entirely benevolent in their attitude.
Jul 8, 2024 9:45 pm
"Perhaps we can disguise ourselves and avoid the need to rely on scum like Kessle" Valerie postulates to Octavius
"Ohhhh, I will be a butterfly pixie" Linzi exclaims
"As bandits!" Valerie assets "They don't seem to be organized and the only marking are those silver amulets we keep looting"
Jul 10, 2024 5:38 am
Obviously we will be disguised as bandits. It would just be good to have someone who has credentials to get us in more easily. Too bad Kessle isn't completely turned to our cause.
Jul 11, 2024 12:27 am
We should simple execute the scum for her crimes, as per our charter and go forth. I doubt she is redeemable.
Jul 11, 2024 11:38 pm
"Death is not the only form of justice, her inevitable end will come when the time is right. Guards from the city will also come eventually as well, they can take her."
Jul 11, 2024 11:41 pm
"The bandit does not have to be turned to be of use. Fear can instill enough loyalty for Kessle to get us in the door. Then she can run, or suffer an unfortunate accident as need be"
Jul 12, 2024 5:17 pm
I can be scary if we need to go that route. Remember the last guy...
Jul 13, 2024 5:35 am
Please people all this talk of killing or scaring our prisoner is distracting us from our goals. While I am against killing Kessle, I also do not believe it would be in our best interests to be reliant on her to aid us. We will have to use our abilities to pull off what would be a great and daring plan to take down this so called lord. As for just summarily executing all of the folks who have turn to a life of banditry, I would remind everyone that there are many in this life that it was that path or starvation. As we are tasked with building a new and prosperous realm, we must ask ourselves will we conquour it with blood and death or will be its liberators raising it people up and freeing them from tyranny. Both will sadly require violence, but we must tread carefully because it will be increasingly easy to become what we are trying to fight as we move forward.

And with that Dalia refills her water and sits back down
Jul 13, 2024 5:51 pm
You don't let me do the scary face enough. Silene says rolling her eyes. I suppose we can leave Kessle here waiting for prison and just say we're her crew who escaped. We can just hope the one who ran away didn't reach the stag lord first.
Jul 14, 2024 10:30 pm
I have little fear that we would need her after all we have the skills and the bravado to see us through this challenge.
Jul 17, 2024 6:36 pm
Then let's gather our things, leave Kessle here for the city guards and go disguised as bandits as soon as possible. We have a long way to travel to get there and the wilderness is vast.
Jul 20, 2024 1:28 am
disguised as bandits....I suppose I must leave my hat here then. Hopefully I shall find a worthy feather for it upon our travels
Jul 25, 2024 1:13 pm
Hmm it would seem that, some animals have been attracted to the carnage we left behind. While normally I would be for leaving them alone, I would like to take a second look for Svetlana's ring. It would bring her such great pleasure to have such an important symbol returned to her. "Whispers Dalia"
Jul 27, 2024 7:08 pm
Octavius, Dalia, and Silene carefully enter the camp. Beasts have been digging into the shallow graves of felled bandits days prior. A effort frustrated by stone and wards skillful placed to foil unholy and mundane despoiling. Carefully searching you find no remains of treasure or lost jewelry.

The quiet is broken as hunger small dog-like animals burst from cover to charge at the trio.

Aug 19, 2024 5:29 pm
You identify these as Thylacine, (aka Tasmanian Tiger)

A thylacine can be easily mistaken for a dog or jackal, but the defining stripes on their gold-hued backs and unusually wide gaping jaws negate this perception in close encounters. A thylacine is quite vocal, and uses a combination of growls, hisses, and gaping threat-yawns when threatened. An adult thylacine stands 2 feet tall at the shoulder, is 4 feet long (not counting an additional 2 feet of tail) and weighs roughly 50 pounds. The thylacine is a marsupial carnivore. This nocturnal predator typically hunts alone, only occasionally forming small packs. Because of their odd appearance, thylacines have a far harsher reputation than they probably should, playing a sort of bogeyman role in farming communities.

Once dusk rolls in and the hill in shrouded in shadows. The hillside to the left of the main gate has some larger boulders for cover and Dalia starts her investigation in that area. The hill is dotted with area of loose dirt, which Dalia recognizes as unmarked forgotten graves. Benight these graves she can sense the fowl unholiness of undeath, but nothing stirs or reacts.

Approaching the fort there is a moment where she is in the direct line of sight with a guard, she quickly dodges behind a boulder. "I hate it when the zombies are about" she here on the wind. Dalia is able to move close to the forts where she finds, a slightly sunken section of
ground. A quick probe that the sunken area covers a buried stone trapdoor. The stone is buried and would at least 5mins to clear, the difficulty would be in avoiding notice from the guards.

Also, you can see the fort clears when near the wall. The palisade surrounding the fort is 15 feet high, consisting of vertical logs sharpened into spikes at the top.

Good rolls, mostly. Lets see what Octavius does before resolving this activity
Sep 19, 2024 2:00 pm
Octavius shall remain where he is. Stealth is not his forte and I expect any attempt at it will have unwanted effects. He instead will observe the fort with a military eye. Watching the guards placements and routines. Looking for places where they appear or disappear may indicate ladders or stairs. How protected they are, how sturdy the walls and gates. How potentially flammable. That sort of thing.

Rolls

Sun Tsu time [Warfare Lore] - (1d20+8)

(13) + 8 = 21

Sep 19, 2024 11:57 pm
Octavius watches as Dalia and Silene clear dirt from a forgotten stone door, while avoid the sightlines of bandits in the fort. The fort itself is low quality from design and quality. Octavius observes the guards walking between tower platforms around the fort (white arrows) but never along the wall near Dalia & Silene. The fort is constructed from rough logs and would fall to any real siege, Octavius estimates that a strong warrior could climb over the wall with moderate difficulty. Observing the guards gives Octavius a good sense of patrol rotation, which could help him sneak by undetected.

https://i.imgur.com/Q8C8s6om.png

The dirt is loose and clearing the door only takes Dalia, Silene, and the earthy Filbert 5mins to clear. Dalia and Silene probe the door which could open without fuss. It is heavy though, it would take effort to open without making a loud sound.

Dalia makes her way deeper into the south room with Linzi in toe. Far corner of the store room their appears to straw animal bed, with gnawed bones cast around the bed. Dalia tracks the sounds to a specific point on the wall, it sounds a kin to casting a spell.

Silene you gracefully drop the 15ft and see a miserably damp cellar. The ceiling fifteen feet overhead is thick with cobwebs. Her Elf eyes can see two archways in the walls open into other rooms, they seem to be filled with with mounds of crates, furs, sacks, weapons, and other presumably stolen loot.

Octavius ungracefully drops 15ft, his heavy armor groaning for his effort. The cellar is shrouded in darkness, except the storeroom to the south.

There is a moment of silence, punctuated by Valerie and Harrim dropping from the roof.

Without warning an unkempt man old springs forth from the wall and makes a b-line for the ceiling. He scrambles with unnerving to the center of the cellar ceiling, clinging to the rough stone like a gecko or spider. His eyes wildly scans the cellars and the intruding adventures, moving his body like a cornered animal. "Who ars u? Not be here! He not allow!" the old man barks

Sep 29, 2024 6:59 pm
Hello good sir, my name is Daila and these are my friends, we were send here by a very nice dryad to check why the area has become so tainted, far beyond what a simple bandit camp should do. We mean you no harm. There There, you poor fellow, someone has treated you horribly unkindly. Please come down here so I might tend to your sores.

Oct 6, 2024 5:01 pm
"Then I guess we leave the poor man to it then. But do not worry my dear Sir, we will come back for you and help you to find the way back to sanity."

And with that Dalia heads back to the other hallway
Oct 6, 2024 7:33 pm
Everyone starts shuffling to the other side of the cellar, with the ceiling old man hounding their progress. The remainder of the cellar seems to house trade goods like pelts, furs, tobacco, iron, bronze, miscellaneous weapons & armor, and random adventuring gear. There are some shiny chests as well, the old man barks at anyone who strays to close. "Go, I Guard! I Guards gud, Gets no fist!"

In one corner a rickety ladder leads to hatch covered with a wooden plank. Pushing up on the plank reveals a rubble-filled room that has old smells of roasted pig and cheap booze. It appears to be unoccupied.

Let's very quietly send Filbert ahead to scout, he can turn into some lichens or moss that wouldn't look too out of place using his plant form ability if people approach and return to us once the coast is clear.
Oct 9, 2024 6:13 pm
Filbert rolls out in to the "pig smelly" room, slipping into the darkened fortress.

After a few minutes Filbert comes back to report

2: Filbert area as a barely a room, filled with rumble from the collapsed tower. It only qualifies as a room as ruined walls separate it from other rooms. Worse the bandits use the only remaining bits of roof to keep some wooden crates dry.

3: These are wooden stairs leading to the platforms and towers that make the fort. Filbert heard someone squeaking the floor up in the tower so he didn't go further.

4: The fort has a dusty yard between it and the walls. Very hard packed, with no tasty plants. There are two hunger horses that probably ate them all.

5. This seems to be some sort of central room. Filbert didn't investigate as there was lots of snoring and talking.

The old man in the cellar is getting increasingly agitated. Dalia feels that her spell will last for a few more minutes.

"Finally, what took you scummy ass so long?" followed by squeaky footsteps in the tower. Dalia can make out a shadowy figure making there way towards the tower door, stretching as they walk.

Nov 2, 2024 3:58 pm
Octavius believes some attempt at concealment is in order. But there is also the idea of drawing the zombies into the fort and letting them create chaos and thin the opposition.
Moving the dead man, though, is more effort and noise than it would be worth
Nov 2, 2024 7:41 pm
The open aired 'room' below the north east tower is mess of masonry and wood, the remains of original fort before the slow collapse. The most prominent feature is the wooden stairs built to access the tower. Low value supplies contained in rough wooden boxes are stored under the stairs and in one corner where the old roof to remains as an overhang.

In the center lays the remains of a large fallen bandit. Filbert the small leshy, shrieks at the sight of the now corpse and runs past it in a wide berth. Soon the Leshy is telling an epic tales of how he walked around the yard unseen. "... an there is no one in the yard. The towers on other side have either bandits or shadow demons, I couldn't tell so I kept moving. Most of the bandits we in the big room in the center of the fort. Some sounded like they were ready to move!"

"Weren't we going to the tower? Your on watch tonight" Filbert says in a gruff little voice

Then in a whinny voice "Right after a win the next round! Celmet can wait, whats the worse that can happen? He gets too drunk and I roll him down the stairs?"
Nov 2, 2024 7:44 pm
Also, glancing out to the hill. The zombie are milling about, but none approach the fort. They seem to be attracted to the fallen bandit and cluster behind some unseen barrier.

"Aye, a shame this ended in violence. But at least we can put him in a dignified position and reduce the ugliness of this place. Just a little " With that the two grab a leg and drag the lumox into the back.

I'm going with caustic blast on red guy (reflex save, rolled 6 damage) after I move up closer. Hopefully it will hurt his friend on the splash.
Dec 4, 2024 6:08 pm
After bravely rushing out, the Bandit in the red bandanna is overwhelmed by an onslaught of acidy needles and falls. His companion flees to cower behind some rain barrels and fires her longbow at Silene, nicking her in the process.

From the the main room a new host emerges. Another bandit, seeing his fellow red bandana brother fall, pokes his head past a wall and fires his longbow.

The bandit in the tower volleys arrows at Linzi, before taking cover. Linzi screams as she takes an arrow to her face.

The bandit is followed by two other figures, obvious dress & equipped better then the bandits you have seen so far. The first is a armored deadeye man wielding a longsword. His eyes begin to burn with fury are he enters the fray. Dalia you notice that he carries a well maintained longbow on his back with unique style of the clergy of Erastil, which is odd as Erastil is all about frontier communities and banditry would be anathema.

The other figure is greasy man in leather armor carrying a rapier and dagger. On entering the fray he cowers behind the bigger armored man.
https://i.imgur.com/qN9MjJgm.png
Finally the bandit engaged with Valerie turns to fight before trying to regroup. Knocking her to her feet, still the bandit's longsword bounce off her heavy armor.

The bandits are noticeable perturbed by the beast. The bandit that was fleeing increases his pace muttering "Oh he didn't, why is his such a fool..."

Unassumingly, Filbert also emerges from the bandit fort and scampers back towards Silene. He seems to be carrying a lump of grass woven into what looks like a saddle.

Valerie and Harrim follow Octavius to surround the Staglord. Harrim sweeps the bandit leaders feet from under him and Valerie mock him on the ground while stabbing at his feet. Surrounded on the ground, muddy and hungover, with most of his bandits dying or dead the Staglord shows no sign of giving up.

Linzi runs "heroically" back to the other tower, to avoid soaking arrows, hopefully.

In a display of raw angry power the Staglord grabs Octavius and whips him in Valerie, knocking them over in a tangle of bodies. He uses the momentum the leap the the upper platform, using Harrim as a step to launch from. He doesn't make his leap and crashes to the floor, destroying a cheaply build table in the process. The adventures are able to overwhelm the Staglord, his might forcing them to put him all the way down. The remaining bandits flee or surrender.
Dec 23, 2024 8:51 pm
The fort is quickly secured. The interior of the fort is not impressive, with more of the furniture being crates, chests, and old furs. Empty bottles are littered everywhere, particularly in what is likely the Staglords room. A large amount of stolen wealth can be found in the central rooms—the bandits have been stockpiling their ill-gotten goods for months. The majority of the wealth kept here consists of mundane trade goods like pelts, furs, tobacco, iron, bronze, miscellaneous weapons and armor, and miscellaneous adventuring gear. A quick glance reveals that the Staglord and his lieutenants had some valuable gears on them.

Akiros Ismort (raging lieutenants) had a Cold Iron Longsword, and rusted iron holy symbol of Erastil on him
Dovan (sleazy lieutenants) had a Rapier with the Fearsome rune.
Staglord had a fine Composite Longbow with an Earthbinding rune, his stag skull helm that seems to be magical and oddly, a lock of green hair bound with red twine

Overall you have captured 2 bandit prisoners, with 1 fleeing and the rest dead. The wild druid in the cellar seems to has fled through the backdoor you created.

Filbert and I will take a very thorough look in the loot for wedding bands to see if there are ones likely to belong to our hosts.

Dalia spends her time healing the wounded and asking the question of what to do about this keep, should we repair it and set it up as an outpost and a safe haven in these woods or spend some time decommissioning it so as to not have it become another banditry camp again?
Jan 4, 2025 4:59 am
Svetlana's ring is not found in the loot of the fort. When the bandit prisoners are pressed on subject, they mention that they haven't received a loot shipment from the Thorn River Boyz in a while. The higher ups thought the shipment was hit by kobolds. There is a group just northeast along the Shrike river that has been acting real bold lately.
Jan 4, 2025 4:21 pm
Octavius will spend time examining the fort's condition. Assessing it for repairs, or improvements where it is faulty. He will also inquire among the NPCs for their opinions on both the fort's construction, repair needs and the undead issue, as well as any other concerns they may have of securing this as a stronghold
Jan 4, 2025 6:17 pm
Perhaps we should head back that way and clear them out. Let's question the bandit prisoners further on numbers to see if we could take them out on the way up or need reinforcement before trying.
Jan 5, 2025 6:25 am
Dalia will spend her day time hours, praying and preforming last rights on the dead and the various unkempt graves to hopefully avoid any more angery undead.
Jan 5, 2025 6:44 pm
Agreed. Clearing out any local scum will make the area more attractive to people and prevent depredations on the route here by traders.

Sadly, at some point, we may need to consider the more bureaucratic aspects of nation building. Taxes, trade laws, local regulation, road construction. The banal stuff.
Jan 6, 2025 5:34 pm
One closer inspection the fort seems to be centered on the ruins of a fortified monastery long abandoned and adapted over the years. The fort currently in not in a good state of repair, the bandits appear to be more drunkards and bullies then qualified engineers. The base stone foundation remains solid, and could be worked into large secure building ideal for the seat of government (eg a town hall). In a pinch the fort could be used a refuge from the dangers of the wild and other bandits.

The monastery was originally dedicated to Gyronna, a lesser-known goddess of extortion, hatred, and spite whose faith has always been strong in the River Kingdoms. The undead seem to be a result of divine angst, likely the monks angered the god of hatred/spite in some way. Proper reverence to the major gods in the region should clear the minor god's spiteful echo. Again, the bandits seems more like drunkards and bullies, rather then respectful clergy.

Suddenly, I'm thinking we should get the fuck out of here. This is no place for a seat of government. It should be torn down, cleansed and left to nature to reclaim. Nothing good can come of a place dedicated to such "ideals"

Silene recalls hearing about this type a troll with the extra information from the ranger. A rare rock troll that usually is not on the surface. She can confirm it's weak to matters of the will and strong to matters of fortitude. Critically she recalls it is very weak to sunlight and will petrify over time.
OOC:

One action

Sunlight Petrification
If exposed to direct sunlight, a cavern troll immediately becomes Slowed 1 and can't use reactions or Trample. The slowed value increases by 1 each time the cavern troll ends its turn in sunlight. If the cavern troll's actions are reduced to 0 in this way, they become Petrified until they spends at least 1 minute in darkness. Spells like Sunburst that create magical sunlight cannot petrify a cavern troll, but the troll is slowed 1 for 1d4 rounds after being exposed to such an effect.

Apr 14, 2025 11:30 pm
So I have an idea! I can turn into a bear and everyone else can sneak up to the outside of the cave behind me. Then I'll do my extra scary don't hit me growl (Wilding word) and that way they will want to avoid me. Hopefully that will either make them run out of the cave or away from the slaves. Then when they're all cornered we attack them or you hit them as they flee. I can also charm the dog if we want or the horses.

Charming the dog is a good idea. I'd rather avoid anything resembling a fair fight. If we can keep the horses, they can be valuable, either for ourselves or trade.

The cave is dimly lit in the morning. A guard lays slumped against the cave wall after nodding off in his post. Prisoners are also slumped against the back wall with rags serving as blankets. In a secondary cave you can see three people in bedrolls around the embers of a campfire. A guard dog lays in front of this cave, hear perked.

Silene defy slips into the cave morphing into a small bear. With a simple low growl the guard whimpers and become submissive to suddenly appearing bear. The dog scampers up to Silene with a tail between it's legs and ears back to lick the bear in the face. Octavius deftly follow Silene, using the bear form to hide his movement. Dalia tracks near the horses, startling one of them to wake with a annoyed neigh.

The sleeping guard's eyes snap open, loudly snorting "Bear? Shoo! Go! Cave Occupied. Wait who are you? "

Octavius is no fool to enter the cave with 3 slavers, but he does recognize the danger of them getting among us in this space. He will move up to that entrance [15-Q] with his shield and sword and take Total Defence. This should give Dalia and Seline time to deal with the main cave, or blast some big spells over his shoulder, whichever they prefer. I can do this all day

Startled by the charging bear the slaver on watch scrambles to his feet swinging wildly with a hastily grabbed club, screaming "Bear! Protect me you mangy mutt". The guard dog reluctantly moves up to the bear-friend and nips at her heels, it seems sickened by the act.
