You are local heroes. Mere days ago, a powerful demon cult threatened to kill the king and almost got away with summoning a demon in the king's court, but your bravery saved the day. A feat was thrown in your honor, and everyone in town knows you. About 3 days have passed since the battle with the cult, and the king has sent you a message, asking if you would like to join him at an exclusive museum preview. You all agree and meet the king just as sundown occurs at the museum in question.

Kaladan, Dragonborn Curator

Before you stands a black dragonborn. He is wearing very nice clothing, like that of a noble, and holds himself with extreme poise. When he talks, he sounds like something that is very knowledgeable, yet not snobbishly so. "Welcome, fine heroes. I heard of your exploits and was excited to hear the king thought to invite you. Tonight should be a peaceful event let me show you around."

Kaladan shows you around. You recall a pair of stone lion statues out front, expertly carved. At the front is a desk, presumably someone to confirm you have paid for entry when it is opened later and to answer questions, though no such person is here now. Behind the desk are rows of display cabinets, each displaying items that do not appear magical but are nonetheless valuable for their historical importance. To the left and right of the front desk are stairs that lead 10 feet up to a balcony that overlooks the earlier area on both sides. Each of these balconies display more vertical items, such as clothing of important people and dioramas of depicting events of the past. On the balcony to the right are also two big items on display. The first is a dragon's skull and the second appears to be the exoskeleton of a rare giant beetle. Both balconies lead to a stairway in the back that joins on the first floor to the far side of the building, but also have another stairway that appear to lead to a 3rd floor.

"You are welcome to look around and ask any questions you like. I only ask you do not go to the third floor. It is not ready to be viewed by anyone as of yet, and I prefer to show finished work over work in progress."

Feel free to roleplay until Monday, 8/19. If you wish to talk to the king or the curator, I will reply if I am able.

At some point, please tell me where you would want to stand when things happen. You can say a specific square like F14, or something vague like "in front of the statue on the left balcony". If you are vague, though, I will put you somewhere and the vagueness means you don't care where as long as it matches what you said, so no "one square down please" if you don't say a specific square.

Touching the frame of the mirror, the woman cast Light so proper illumination would ensure that the powders and paints applied to her face would be flawless. A gala with the king was worth the extra time taken on her appearance but who was she kidding? Bells always took extreme care to ensure she made an impression. Tilting her head to the side, thick auburn curls tumbled over her shoulder since Bells had decided against an updo. Kohl outlined warm brown almond shaped eyes blessed with long natural lashes set above high cheekbones. Her nose upturned the slightest on the end which could lend itself to a hauty look if held just right but usually Bells wore a brilliant smile that warmed everyone within its radiance. Was it her perfect white teeth or the full curve of her bottom lip? Who knew except that most would do anything to keep her smiling. And why shouldn't she smile as the performer was leading a charmed life? A recognized hero with the appreciation and adoration of the entire kingdom.

Rising, the tinkle of golden bells rang out pure and true. Her namesake was wrapped around her calves with a fine filament. Much to the horror of Bells more sneaky companions, music always announced the location of the bard. The blame rested upon her father who started the tradition of adding a bell every year on the day of her birth as a celebration of when his life was filled with song. The ol' softie!

Standing back studying the image reflecting in the mirror, Bells nods as she decided on the feathers for her grand entrance. "Encore" is breathed out transforming the studded leather armor the bard wore into a stunning evening gown replete with a several tiered necklace nestled against her bosom. After all what cake is ready to serve without frosting? Perhaps it was all an illusion but the bard intended to shine like she was gold.

King Triston

The king chuckles. "I appreciate your dedication. Tonight is an opportunity to relax. We are the only ones here. Enjoy the history."
Aug 17, 2024 12:57 pm
Crow give a bow of appreciation to the king and makes his way upstairs, looking at the beetle and dragon skull.
Aug 18, 2024 6:00 pm
"Darlings, isn't this an unparalleled honor? I have to admit that I didn't realize the guest list would be so exclusive as to only include us with his Majesty. I had thought it to be a small retinue of the highest nobles but we practically have a private audience! Now Xcha don't slouch when we are presented to the king," teased the bard of the silver dragonborn that had a rimrod straight posture at all times.

The party did not have long to wait after they assembled waiting for the king. Bells was taken aback at the lack of formality as the king wasn't even announced as he entered the room. Not following protocol was of course the prerogative of the monarchy but since she was not of that level, the well dressed performer bowed low with a rare grace, "Your majesty, we are only here to serve and your continued gratitude humbles us. Thank you for this opportunity."

As the event progressed into the museum, Bells collected a flute of champagne from the counter to sip as the king introduced Kaldan. As the bubbles tickled her nose, Bells arched a fine eyebrow over the instructions that the party was welcomed everywhere but the third floor. Subtly Bells' eyes found the thief's as she shook her head slowly from side to side knowing that as soon as he heard the third floor was off limits then that was exactly where he would want to be. Hopefully such impulses would be controlled!
Aug 18, 2024 6:32 pm
As the curator of the museum lead the party to the stairs, the chivalrous black dragonborn offered his arm. Even though a scholar, Bells hand looked dainty resting upon the scaled ones well developed arm. Being a skilled conversationalist, Bells had numerous questions that centered around her host passion. "Oh, what a magnificent specimen!" gasped the bard. "Is the name known?" regarding the huge dragon's skull that had to have a rousing story behind it.

Hunt is polite, but activities like this are out of his wheelhouse. It's all so formal and stuffy. Still, it's the thought that counts and this old dog has been around long enough to learn a few tricks... like appreciating the intent behind the gesture, even if the gesture itself was lacking.

Bells is absolutely in her element. Xcha is acting as expected. Crow wandered off. There isn't too much here that interests the shifter, but the weapons in a case caught his eye. Those he understands.

Without meaning to, he catches himself eyeing the locking mechanism and immediately pushes the impulse out of his mind. That isn't why they were in the museum tonight. These valuable things will stay right where they are.

The tall figure in gray robes accented with shimmering blue stones glided into the foyer as though floating, the hint of dark wings on his back if viewed from the corner of one's eye. He nodded to his compatriots before approaching King Triston. At a safe distance from the king so as not to cause undue alarm, he pulled back his hood to reveal a bald head of opalescent blue-green skin, gently glowing golden eyes, and a wide smile.
[ +- ] Travail
"King Triston, long may you reign, I am honoured by your invitation," Travail said as he bowed and stood beside the regent and Xcha, "And I am glad you are in such fine spirits. Lesser rulers would be fearfully huddled in their bedchambers after weathering such an assault."

A glass of the same champagne Bells enjoyed levitated over to float beside Travail's head as he looked around the museum.

"Are you a student of history, sire? Apart from consulting oracles, knowing the past is the best way to shape the future."

Kaladan, Dragonborn Curator
Kaladan smiles like someone who enjoys rambling about topics they know much about as Bells asks about the skull. "Why it is believed to be the skull of an adult blue dragon that was killed by a group of heroes about a hundred years ago not far from here. The dragon's name was Zuvrayd, and it was said that the dragon was trying to cheat death. It is unconfirmed what happened that day, but this skull tells me much of what I need to know. I have had priests and mages alike confirm it is not at under any magic."

"Cheating death?" Says Crow with a chuckle "Even Gods die."
Aug 19, 2024 1:05 pm
Leaning over the skull, Bells bites her bottom lip in concentration before a light of recognition goes off in her eyes as the bard had searched the songs cataloged in her repertoire. "Zuvrayd, did you say? Yes, well he maybe dead but not forgotten so perhaps the old serpent succeeded after all "

Enhaling deeply the bard's clear voice rose filling the space reverberating off the stone surfaces as Bells put on a performance.

**Title: The Ballad of the Blue Dragon**

*(Verse 1)*
In the skies where the storm clouds gather,
Lived a dragon, fierce and bold,
With scales of sapphire, shimmering light,
A tale of glory and woe unfolds.

*(Chorus)*
Oh, mighty blue dragon, ruler of the skies,
You soared through the tempest, defying the cries.
But fate has its whispers, and time will not bend,
In your quest to cheat death, you met your end.

*(Verse 2)*
With a heart full of power, a spirit untamed,
You sought the dark secrets, a gamble unclaimed.
In the caverns of shadows, where lost spirits dwell,
You danced with the echoes of a forbidden spell.

*(Chorus)*
Oh, mighty blue dragon, ruler of the skies,
You soared through the tempest, defying the cries.
But fate has its whispers, and time will not bend,
In your quest to cheat death, you met your end.

*(Bridge)*
But legends are born from ashes and flame,
Though your body lies still, your spirit will reign.
In the hearts of the brave, your memory flies,
A guardian of dreams, beneath starry skies.

*(Verse 3)*
With thunderous roars and lightning’s embrace,
You challenged the reaper, a desperate chase.
Yet the hourglass shattered, your fate was sealed tight,
In a clash of the titans, you fell from the light.

*(Chorus)*
Oh, mighty blue dragon, ruler of the skies,
You soared through the tempest, defying the cries.
But fate has its whispers, and time will not bend,
In your quest to cheat death, you met your end.

By no means had the bard remained static. The first chorus, Bells had circled the massive skull drawing power from its presence twirling around Crow emphasized by the feathers shimmering before making her way to the balcony to serenade those below. Bells ended her performance with her arms stretched wide leaning against the balustrade. Yes, dragons weren't the only ones that wanted to be remembered.

Bone Knight

As Bells finishes her song, you all start to hear a commotion outside. It sounds like some of the guards stationed outside are yelling at someone, and then suddenly silenced. Before any of you can go to investigate, the sounds of doors slamming opened and multiple windows shattering rings as multiple people burst into the museum. On the far north and south are individuals masked in armor that appears to be infused with bones, but with no glowing eyes you suspect they are not undead. Each of these knights seem to be accompanied by a mastiff, but these hounds are black as knight and drooling smoke. On the balconies, 2 figures leap through each side's windows, 4 total, as if they had jumped out of trees. These individuals are clearly skeleton warriors, though their armor has seen better days. They all wield a greataxe that almost looks too big for them to wield, but they seem to hold just fine.

One of the knights by the door yells, "Look who it is. It's the king. Weren't expecting you here, but two birds, one stone, as they say."

Travail's fingers formed arcane signs as a fascinating mass of otherworldly colours appeared above the king. It seemed almost coherent, like you could almost make out what it was supposed to be, and it made you hooked on figuring it out. While the attackers might find it hypnotic, the mind mage ensured he and his associates weren't the least bit interested.

Should one of the attackers also find the pretty lights uninteresting, a writhing globular protuberance forced its way into the mortal realm from somewhere other to lash it into terror!

Options, Xcha? Make a break for it outside or stand and fight here? Travail asked the dragonborn warrior mentally.

Only 2 make the save. BK2 and SM1. You are pretty sure on their next turn that they are going to slap people out of the stuper, who can then do the same for others. So essentially most of the enemies on the lower floor will lose their turn, and this will last only 1 round. Bells' head was artfully tilted to catch the most of the light as she waited for an eruption of accolades as the last of the notes of the ballad faded away but such appreciation never came as her moment was stolen by a band in the raggy-ass costumes. Who couldn't see those dents? Tacky!

And the theme "Undead"? Really? Cliche! So in addition to bad timing and taste, the "skeleton" had shown little judgement attacking what must appear to be the entertainment over a dragonborn? In most cases a bad call but in this instance the least bonehead thing he could have done. If the bard had not found herself knocked to the ground, Bells would have slipped over the balcony to reach the king to escape to safety but now?

It had been a reflexive reaction to throw her arm up to protect her head as that large blade threatened removal of arguably one of her best features but now blood soaked what use to be a beautiful illusion as the bard laid crumpled on the ground. It had been a hard blow to take for someone that tried not to break a nail during combat. But bless... Crow? It must have been Crow that just pushed away the brute so Bells could pull herself to her feet using the railing as support.

The view between the columns did not soothe the bard as she regained her footing. The king along with her troupe were surrounded, with reinforcments from the far balcony fast approaching to bolster numbers that already favored the enemy. Something was needed to even the odds! With a museum of items to pull from the next song out of her lips did nothing less than breathe life into the relics on display as she cast Animate Objects.
[ +- ] 5th level transmutation
A button or a broach, it didn't matter. All were possible weapons with the bard's magic as six items swarmed SM1 while another four found BK2 as the only enemies close to the king not blankly staring into the air.

Nodding in satisfaction that allies had been added to protect the king, the bard whispered "encore". In a flash the bloodied dress was replaced with a gleaming set of armor with scrolls filled with notes etched across the surface. Bells tossed her hair over her shoulder while her hands formed fist to rest on her hips. "Look to me, my friends, and know that victory will be ours. Gods save the king!"

@CherokeeWind you just took 2 bonus actions. You can't make the objects in animate objects act as part of casting. You use your action to animate and bonus action to make them act. You then used another bonus action for mantle of inspiration.

Which are you using your bonus action for?

The animated objects swirl around the shadow drooling hound. It seems to be unable to dodge all by 2 of the 6 objects. The knight, however, blocks all but 2 of the 4 objects. Its armor seems like plate, but thicker. You aren't sure how much thicker.

The curator screams. "What are you doing! Those objects are worth more than you can understand! If they are damaged..." he seems too stunned to finish, as he hears them bash into things below.

OOC:
As agreed in the OOC thread, as forkbeard is having computer issues but had previously taken his turn too soon, the results of that turn will be used now when it would have been his turn next. I will then have the monsters go.

For the record, his rolls were:
12 for 7 dmg
23 for 7 dmg
25 for 10 dmg
Three was a 4th damage roll, but there were only 3 attacks so I think that was a mistake.

He repeated his wisdom save against the frightened condition, but rolled a 4 and is still frightened of SM1

As he was frightened, the attacks should be at disadvantage, but as the shadow mastiffs' AC is 12 only a nat 1 will miss so I will roll 3d20 below any for every 1 the corresponding attack will miss instead.

OOC:
Ok, this part might get a bit complicated. Creatures can use their action to shake another within reach out of hypnotic pattern.
Originally BK1/3/4 and SM2/3/4 were affected. BK4 and SM4 took damage, so they are snapped out of it, leaving BK1/3 and SM2/3 still affected.
SM1 will get SM2 free, who will then get BK3 free too, who will use their turn to attack Travail for doing that.
SM4 will take an opportunity attack to move to SM3 and get him free (i'll assume he takes the attack, since he is having computer issues), and SM3 will free BK1, who will attack Travail.
BK2 will attack Xha, and BK4 will attack Hunt.

Few, that was complicated to track, hahaha.
The bone knights notice the impact Travail had and most of them decide to focus him, as he is a dangerous threat. They cast some kind of spell on their weapons and swing at Travail, Xha, and Hunt.

I will update Xha's hp for him, so he doesn't miss this. forkbeard, if you see this, you don't have to update your hp. I did it for you.

Sometimes in the heat of battle, Bells would see an image of what would momentarily unfold or maybe it was an echo of the actual event but whatever the case, the bard knew in those moments she was life's composer able to change a crucial note thus changing the whole song.

The bone knight had spoken true stating Travail was a crucial member of their party thus Bells needed to stop the arc of the weapon currently meant to crush past Travail's defenses causing his concentration to break. The power released from the spell, Silvery Barbs, Bells would then be redirected back to the warlock for him to use as he best saw fit.

OOC:
I am usually use to playing with GMs that have failed charm saving throws against me and are a bit flexible with the rules using diagonals and such but you seem that you like to play straight and true so I am unsure if you consider Travail within range. If you do, then I use this action as my reaction and I will still have my turn. Hopefully we can get the momentum moving in our direction.
Aug 24, 2024 7:36 pm
OOC:
when I am playing with people I don't know, I prefer to play rules as written, as that way we are most likely to be on the same page when things come up. As far as diagonals, default 5e movement doesn't cost extra with diagonals, that is an optional rule in the DMG, so to handle verticals I use the longer of that x or y axis movement as the distance, so you are fine.

I actually rolled the rerolls already and hid it, but didn't want to just assume you would cast it. The rerolls is a 23 so it still hits but no crit. As such, the damage was 31, not 56, for a DC or 15, which Travail passed. Hypnotic pattern is still active. @annex please update accordingly. I will reflect this in the next battle info post.
Aug 24, 2024 11:40 pm
There was a reason that Bells had picked the tiniest objects as she heard the curator complain about his precious collection. Did he not know that animating the dragon head or even that clickty clackity bug was much more Bells style? No one was gasping in terror from a button but the drama that would have ensued around the larger objects would have been epic but most likely resulted in their destruction. "Then bring honor to your scales and defend the museum and king, dragonborn!" Bells unbuckled the rapier that had been hanging under the illusion of her evening gown letting it clang to the ground in easy reach of the museum's director.

The clatter did not cover the sounds below that resumed as another round of attacks started. The larger whirlwind of destruction moved past the mastiff that now looked like a big puppy as it gazed upward with its tongue hanging out to the side to attack the newly arrived Skeleton brute (SB1). The smaller number of items attacked the limping Skeleton brute (SB4) behind them that had landed hard on that ankle.

Bells still had a small trick up her sleeve and she was saving it for that brute who had dared to cause her to bleed. The monster had spoiled her look and THAT was unforgivable! But in the moment of casting, the bard adjusted the spell causing it to land several feet away on the Bone knight (BK2). Being a part of a team meant your partners came first and Travail needed every bit of help he could get.

I don't think you can choose to sneak attack on attack 2. If this was a live game, you would have had to decide when attack 1 hit if you would sneak attack before rolling attack 2, and you wouldn't know have known to hold sneak attack because 2 would have crit. I am not trying to sound mean, but I think the above logic is fair as to sneak attack would have been on attack 1 since 21 hits and that one was not a crit. If attack 1 had missed or was the crit, I would have had nothing to say. As such, I will ignore the last 4 dice rolled on that damage roll, as everything else is right so I'll go in order of rolled. As such, that damage roll is 28 not 43. still a lot, though.

You really roll attacks one at a time around a table? Combat is the slowest part of the game. At my table, if you aren't rolling your attacks and getting everything handled while the person before you goes you're wrong.

But with advantage vs those who can’t see?
Aug 28, 2024 10:24 pm
OOC:
I think that is correct. Blind sight means you can effectively see to a certain range even if blind.

What I don't know is about commanding them. If you say "attack BK2" but you can't see BK2, will they know who you are talking about?
Aug 28, 2024 10:32 pm
OOC:
I would think their knowledge of an enemy would be equivalent to the caster. Since the caster can’t see I would say they need to be very specific if a certain enemy is targeted but in lieu of that general orders can be given. For instance keep attacking the same enemy until it dies and the kill the next closest one.

Travail had enough of getting slashed. With an arcane word, a force shield deflected the bone knight's greatsword strike but now arcane darkness descended over him.

"Come, sire!" he shouted, followed by another string of arcane words. Travail couldn't see the doorway but he knew it was there, and he visualized the staircase in the north-west corner of the first level as their destination.

Once there, Travail formed a claw with one hand to warp magic and manifest a ghostly, skeletal hand which clawed at the skeletal brute he saw!
OOC:
Reaction: Shield.
Action: Dimension Door with the king ending up at C6 and Travail at C7.
No Action: Metamagic Quicken Spell.
Bonus Action: Chill Touch at SB3.

On a hit, the target takes 3d8 necrotic damage, and it can't regain hit points until the start of my next turn. Until then, the hand clings to the target. If the target is undead, it also has disadvantage on attack rolls against me until the end of my next turn.

Skeleton Brute
OOC:
It's a nit pick, and your turn still goes off as you said, but technically you would need to use quicken spell on dimension door, not chill touch. 2024 makes this less complicated, but long story short if you bonus action a cantrip your action must be a cantrip too if also a spell, but switching the order means your action was a cantrip.
The skeleton brutes take their swings. They seem rather mindless, so they go for easy targets. SB3 attacks crow first, to see if he breaks crows concentration. If it misses, or crows keeps concentration, SB2 will be forced to attack SM3. SB1 no longer hear's travail's movements and didn't hear where he walked to and assumes he is no longer there. It steps into Travail's old space to confirm, then decides to go for the sound of clanking metal it hears (Xha).
OOC:
They all miss, but as expected the one forced to attack it's ally not only hits but crits. You all are being protected by some kind of force, not sure what.

Despite the bard's own inability to see the activity taking place on the floor below, Bells knew the objects she had animated did not suffer such a deficit but would be reliant on her command. Thus, simple was best. The order to the larger group of items, "Continue to attack same target." Tearing her gaze from the inky blackness below, the bard dramatically twirls to confront the Skeleton brute behind her. With eyes glowing as if powered by an inner fire, "YOU!" punctuated with enough force that it almost constituted a physical blow. "Drop your weapon! You heard the curator. Bells looks at the skeleton brute and sees a lack of soul and a lack of will. it can probably feel fear if magically compelled, but any verbal command not from its master may as well be spoken by a mute person.
OOC:
If that was against one of the knights, perhaps I would give them disadvantage on their attacks as if they were frightened for 1 round, as to not invalidate spells that cost a resource like cause fear, but the skeleton bute is unphased as it is too single minded and thus only obeys its master, which you are not.
Also, in the future, it seems harsh but any skill check is an action unless something says otherwise, so casting minor illusion and intimidating are both actions. I do try to make skills somewhat useful in combat, if players are creative, but dropping a weapon is a big deal compared to being shaken and nervous. There is also the chance that a zealous enemy may not feel intimidated if they are willing to die and thus being eaten by a dragon skull is perfectly acceptable to them.

Xcha makes two good swings, each connecting with hard armor, and then hears a thud as if someone fell over. In the dark, he makes a third swing that seems to no go for anyone.

In the darkness, you all hear, "Alright, to me!" You hear the sound of some kind of magic humming in the air and the voice seems to say something that resembles more a command word than a spell's verbal component. Suddenly, the skeleton brute on the eastern balcony starts to blacken and turn to dust that seems to blow away as if there were wind and disappears. Then, the darkness ends and none of the enemies, alive or dead, that were in there before remain. Not a scrap of armor or even a weapon.

As the brute skeleton turned to ash only to be carried away by the wind, the bard reached out an arm with fingers fully extended as if by force of will her hand could reach the enemies essence snatching it from the air to hold blocking his escape. "Nooooo!" Bells growled in frustration before turning to slam her palms on the railing as her eyes confirmed that every enemy below had also made an escape ...even the dead.

"Let it not be said that they didn't know how to make an exit." Hanging her head momentarily the bard whispers to her self, "I should have anticipated it!" But self-reproach could come later as other pressing matters needed her attention.

Glancing up at Kaladan as Bells retrieves her rapier from the veined marble floor. The bard mask her inner thoughts that the curator was more kobold than dragonborn with a reassuring smile, "I'm pleased you are whole as I trust all of the objects put into service to protect the king. I have deposited the lot on the the display case below for your inspection." Eyes flickering over to Crow as he stated his fear of a missing item before encouraging the curator toward the steps, "Master Kaladan, you best take a quick inventory of the area that was cast in darkness because I think something is missing and we need to know what."

Why don't you sit and recover? I'm really going to have to get a healing spell if everyone keeps insisting in jumping into swords. "To be honest, I feel like we failed here. The gods be praised the king is whole but five of the kingdom's heros had a valuable item stolen right in front of them with everyone getting away. How embarrassing! So does anyone know why this pearl is specifically valuable?"

Striding over to the window opening with shards of glass still hanging precariously, Bells looks out searching for any rope the intruders may have used to swing into the room. Bells looks out the window and does see ropes dangling from the roof where there are broken windows. How they managed this is unknown.

Kaladan looks at the party, still in shock, "I don't know anything of the black pearl beyond what is commonly known. It is a very rare gemstone, despite being called a pearl. It is rumored that it grows only near where the veil between the shadowfell and material plan is thinnest, but many people believe that is made up to explain how its black color is so dark it looks impossibly so. Valna, your elven diviner friend, told me to give it to her instead of displaying it, but I denied her request. I thought only she and I knew it was here, so when it became public knowledge tomorrow I would have much more security than I did tonight. Some diviner must have found out I had it."

Kaladan mentioned Valna. She is a high elf wizard who helped you all in your travels. When you would not know what to do, she would charge a free to use divination magic to help you go in the right direction. All of you are on at least friendly terms with her.

Orientating herself back toward the room with conversation, Bells inwardly cringed as she heard Hunt insulting the curator. Granted her own thoughts had not been kind toward the dragonborn but one didn't have to say everything that came to mind. But then when one has a blunt object, is it really such a surprise if something gets smashed? But even Hunt should know better than to disparage the host.

"Now, now the evening has tempers running high. It is well known what a scholary individual you are, Master Kaldan but no one can be an expert in every field. Some items have multiple layers of value....magic likes to hold its own secrets close so how could you expected to properly assess the risk? Mmm, Wizard Valna....I don't suppose she told you the why of her interest? No matter, it is a place to start as we are on familiar terms with her."

What is your next course of action? Your current task is to find the black pearl that was stolen during the chaos. You are level 15, so you could have a method of locating something. If no idea comes to you, you can locate your diviner friend and see if she can locate it, though that would take longer than you doing something yourself.

I would still like to do three things with haste being a priority 1) make sure the king has guards before we leave 2) cast aid 3) check the roof quickly to see if something was left behind. I got the feeling that was a dead end but I would hate to miss a valuable clue due to a wrong assumption

If you all would, please find the black pearl." The king then waits for whoever offers to escort him to the castle and makes for the castle at a good pace. Not far away is a carriage he came in. It appears it was spared any harm, and will use it to head back if no one insists on an alternative.

When you go to the roof, you find the ropes dangling at the windows attached to segments of the roof to allow for the swing that they performed earlier. As for how they got on the roof, those of you who are magically inclined feel the reverberations of magic in the air, as if it was used here recently, but the reverberations are too faint to tell what they were from this feeling alone. There does not appear to be any sign of manual climbing onto the roof.

"Thank you, Crow. The castle isn't too terribly far away, but if you wish to use your own means to get me back while your allies investigate around I will not refuse the offer. When I get back to the castle, I should be safe for the time being. I have hired a few elite guards since the attack from cultists and their backgrounds have been vetted extensively. You all should be able to focus on this new problem at hand."

MaJunior and I are on the same page. Just checking that some identifing marker that might help name the assailants wasn't dropped in all that movement of repelling. I wasn't expecting a drawn map of "we are here" but a talisman with a scythe on it would be a great boon to narrow down which necromancy cult we are dealing or.....a ripped piece of cloth. ;)

At this stage in the game, assuming a DC 15 as the baseline seems fairly reasonable, so a 14 is a failure. However, I try to allow "fail forward" moments outside of combat. This just means "yes you do what you want, but unlike a success this will cost you."

What kind of cost would you think is appropriate? Here are some suggestions, but you can propose one that is similar to these.
- Unbeknownst to you, the thing you find is something one of them was coming back for. They see you found it first and retreat, but now they know you know who they are and are coming.
- You find something, but it is cursed. A minor curse is given to you for touching it without being a member of their group.
- You find something, but only if you are willing to spend a lot longer than originally planned searching. As such, more of the enemy's plan will be finished when you arrive.

Passive perception as a baseline?
Sep 6, 2024 8:11 pm
I don't play with passive perception as a baseline. I would recommend taking enough rogue levels to take reliable talent if you wanted that.
Sep 6, 2024 8:13 pm
Would observant feat be limited in your campaigns? How do you handle spotting a hidden sneaking or a pickpocket?

I use passives when the player does not know they would be making a roll, essentially making passive perception the DC the other person who is being active has to roll against. If a monster is stealthing, your passive perception is the DC they need to match or beat to stay unknown. As soon as you want to actively do something, it's not passive anymore.

The only hint at a "baseline or floor" is this line in passive checks as a whole.
[ +- ] quote
I generally find it unsatisfying, as it means if I wanted a secret door to be hard to find I just arbitrarily make the DC higher than everyone's passive. I also tend to refer to the idea of when a roll is called for. If both success and failure are possible and interesting, let a die be rolled.

Okay....I find what you are proposing interesting and actually shocking coming from a self proclaimed RAW DM but I'm loving it! If it was me then I would take the curse as long as no Little Mermaid shenanigans or messing with the hair (hard lines) but I'm not going to ask that of my fellow player.

I feel that it was a bit harsh to both have the assailant to know we found the talisman AND we don't know they know we are coming. I do, however, think it reasonable that he knows he lost it and that it had to be at the museum. So does admit his folly because it might not have been found and his leaders aren't the most understanding of guys? We don't know but someone is definitely more vigilant.
Sep 7, 2024 12:43 am
The only issue I have with RAW in this case -- and I say this strictly for the purpose of conversation -- is that it doesn't set right with me that by trying to do something, you can do considerably worse than if you don't put forth any effort whatsoever.

Xcha wants to stay close to the king unless there is a direct order otherwise. so he would like a phantom stead if it is faster than his boots of speed -- 60 for 10 minutes
Sep 9, 2024 2:23 pm
Just to confirm, this is my understanding of the plan:
- Crow will cast phantom stead as a ritual 3 times, once for himself, once for the king, once for Xcha. I don't know if Travail was intending to also come along, which would be 40 minutes to get that many horses up.
- Bells and Hunt went to the roof together and from the looks of it the attackers were pretty efficient and didn't drop anything. This means either they got lucky that nothing dropped or snagged or they are experienced in doing this kind of thing and are professionals.

I don't know if the party plans to meet up at the tower of Valna the elven diviner or if they are going to meet somewhere else and go together, but eventually that is the agreed to be the next step.

If anything above is incorrect, please varify before I jump ahead to meeting Valna.

Knowing the king was in good hands, Travail wished him good health and long life. He checked to see if any of the king's guard still lived before heading up to the roof.

Bells had not been interested to ride one of those abominations that Crow liked to call horses. One visit to what had been her father's stable would been enough to correct his blasphemy! Whether by conditions of the desert or skill of the Bedouin, the breed of horses that was the jewel of the desert was fundamentally different from even other horses from the all black skin, no matter their color to the number of their bones leading to their prominently high tail that helped give a proud air. Too proud to be compared with these....these magical steeds. But even Bells' prejudice eye had to admit the mounts would accomplish the goal of safe transportation for the king.

"My dears, please before the night finds us embroidered in any more chaos, let me give you a boon." Warm notes of Aid circled the bard and her companions giving literal strength to both body and soul. For some the music seemed to extend a bit longer than others but none were left untouched by the sweet melody.

Bells found herself on the roof after bidding the king farewell and coordinating with her companions on their plans for to reunite. The wind caught her hair as it tossed the loose auburn tresses around. If the bard had thought the evening would be full of skeletons then she would have put her hair up but now it was in the way. Perhaps her search of the roof was affected but the bard wasn't the only eyes and Hunt was the best. Unfortunately the skeletons just didn't leave any clues behind.

@CherokeeWind Thx for the aid but Crow has one in effect now and can’t benefit. Also aid gives real hps and and increases hp max not temp hps so you can stack!

I am not sure how the hit points aren't temporary if they go away but if that is how it is categorized then so be it. Thanks for letting me know. In light of Crow not being able to benefit, I would like to give the 15 hp to Xcha and not cast the 3rd level spell on just myself.

Aid increases your current and maximum hp, as opposed to providing temp hp. With temp hp, if you had 30 hp and 10 temp and took 20 damage, you'd only have 20 HP and 20 healing would only take to back to 30. If you instead had 30 hp that was increased to 40 and took 20 damage and were healed 20, you could go back to 40 because that is your current hp maximum. Aid is unique

Valna, Elf Diviner

At some point, you all reconvene at the tower of Valna, the elven diviner you have worked with in the past. When she hears you knock on the door, she is as poised as you remember. She has a cup in her hand, and she moves like her body has no weight. "Ah, I see your marry band has returned to me. I don't suppose you are here to share a cup of tea, not with that serious look on your faces."

"No tea, sadly. A gem called the Midnight Pearl was stolen not an hour ago from the museum. An attack on the king by necromantic foot soldiers was used as a diversion. What know you of this gem, Valna?"
Sep 11, 2024 4:32 am
OOC:
We have already laid our cards on the table but I would like to confirm that the wizard has always played true with us? The fact she had her own interest in the pearl makes me suspicious that she might not be totally forthcoming.
Bells looked toward the sky as if asking the gods for help. Perhaps the bard needed to cast silence on her own companions. Since when did a wizard's timetable ever meet up with what was convenient? Push like Crow and a whole tea ceremony would be observed before gaining any information. Not that a cup of that cherry blossom tea served the last time wouldn't be lovely but no....time was ticking.

But what was this development? Travail seemed overly familiar with the attractive diviner. Ohhhh, was it Valna now? Funny but Bells didn't recall the woman telling her to call her Valna. Elven protocol being what it was relations had always had a formal edge but fine...if Travail had formed a more intimate relationship then the bard would sit back while he questioned the wizard.

"Midnight pearl... Don't tell me the fool didn't take my advice. I had hoped he would reconsider when I had left, as he is prideful like that but sometimes secretly goes with correction. I should be able to locate it, as I was able to see it when the dragonborn and I talked." She turns to the dragonborn currently in front of her. "Tell me, did the enemy steal anything else than the midnight pearl? If no, the king is not likely in immediate danger, but depending on what they plan we may all be in danger soon." She beckons everyone inside. After you all enter her study, she continues. "I actually found something this morning that troubled me, but had planned to see Kalanan in the morning. It appears the pearl is not magical by itself, but it is partially made of shadow stuff from the shadowfell. As such, if someone tried to use magic that connected the material plane and the shadowfell, the connection would be much stronger than if it was performed using anything else. I was going to insist that he give the pearl to me so that I might keep it safe in a demiplane, but perhaps I should have gone this afternoon. I appear to be too late now. Let me divine its location."

After about 10 minutes, she returns with a map. "It appears it is here, about 4 miles outside of the city. It is a cemetery that has not been used for years as it is so far out of the city lines. If you take a carriage you can rest on the way there."

"Thank you Valna... its seems our path is simple..."

Crow looks around at the assembled heroes and gives little pep talk. If you got a familiar they might want to listen in as well!

"Friends, the foolishness of our enemies know no bounds and we are tested yet again. The enemy has stolen the Midnight Pearl and dared to insult our king and crown. They think they can hide in the shadows? NAY! They underestimate our resolve! We’ve fought countless battles side by side, and our bond is forged in the fires of war. Together, we will reclaim the pearl, restore honor to the crown, and show the enemy the true meaning of fear. For the king, for the crown, and for our unbreakable brotherhood, onward to victory!"

So Crow is also on a first name basis with the Elven wizard!?! The possible story is now getting downright scandalous! Such drama in Bells' inner circle and she didn't have a clue? Tragic!
Bells situated herself so she could view Crow's chiseled features as the man gathered the party around himself. As a professional performer, Bells could feel the energy gathering so knew the information to be delivered was of some import. If advised, the bard would have suggested a few items of note to polish Crow's delivery but in the end the coaching would have all been in vain.

Crow's stance stated he was in control while the timbre of his voice spoke of confidence evoking a rawness that just plain worked to inspire. Giving credit where credit was due, Bells bows her head in a salute, "Nicely done."
