Morik was baffled, unsure what he was even searching for, the artifact they were here to find could be anything!

"Anyone able to detect magic? Preferably one that flashes big glowing arrows pointing to something and writing out ‘here be artifact’?"

He threw up his arms after a while. "Maybe it’s down below in that pool. Was deep enough to hold a bear and monsters…"

I can detect magic. There is something down here, perhaps among this bunch of treasure here in this elaborately-carved basin.
Faith takes her amulet between thum and indexfinger and speaks a short prayer
Father Bealdor, let your divine sunlight fill me and the world with warmth and light. Reveal the enchantments here to see
The next 10 minutes she moves quickly through the abby pointing out enchantments and the colour of their school. i.e There, that thing, blue aura of abduration
Faith is happy that she can help Eozindra and the others that slew the mayor and his men.

- the eastern southern door from the Entry Hall opens onto a slightly more elegant bedroom with three beds (not bunkbeds) and a desk with a locked drawer. A locked door stands in the eastern wall.
Faith takes a crowbar to the drawer and door. If she happened apron a thives tool kit, she could try the more delicate art of lock-picking.

Adran constructs another faithful mechanical companion. In his grief, not wanting things to change further, he understandably chooses to call the new Steel Defender Mara also.
Eozindra examines each of the papers the party has found. The note on the back of the barracks door is a charcoal sketch depicting the complicated secret handshake used by the guild members of the Lord Mayor's Men.
OOC:
Any PC who studies this chart will then be able to convincingly pull off this secret handshake with either a DEX (Sleight of Hand) or CHR (Deception) check, DC10.
The papers on the barracks desk appear to be a collection of passphrases used by the guild.
OOC:
Any PC examining these passphrase papers can roll an INT (Investigation) check to determine which is the current passphrase.
The books on the Chapel desk are scholarly works of history and arcane studies...but the margins have been filled with scribbled text and sigils in the margins (and sometimes just over the pages themselves).
Inside the Chapel desk's drawer are scores of sheets of parchment filled with cribbed, tiny hand-written text, which appear to be detailed notes about the nobility and wealthy notables of Grayhaven.
OOC:
Anyone examining these noble notes should roll a separate INT (Investigation) check to determine what information they find and how much.
Faith retrieves her equipment, dresses, and takes her amulet in hand. Praying to Bealdor, her eyes glow with the Sun's holy light. The first thing that reflects and redoubles the light is the magic staff that the Lord Mayor had wielded.

Faith continues to wander the halls and rooms of the Abbey, but nothing else glows with the reflected glory of the Sun until she returns to the storeroom behind the carved figures bracketing the doorway (where the party found her equipment). Behind the stacked crates and barrels, the entire back wall glows. Ishi helps to move the containers out of the way, and the party can see that the carvings in the wall are actually large letters, though at first glance they do not read as anything.

With her eyes still glowing, Faith looks at the locked drawer in the "Noble's Quarters" and begins to pull out her crowbar, but Elysia steps in front of her. The little sister is self-conscious that she is perpetuating the dynamic of their youth but unable to stop herself. "Please! You don't need to do that; sometimes a softer touch will work." Elysia pulls out her tools and tries to pick the lock on the desk, showing off. After a minute she throws her tools down in frustration; this is just like when she was a kid and was always trying to impress her sister and Faith and then she would fail because she was so nervous! She exhales slowly and looks down, feeling very small and gathering up her scattered picks. Without looking at Faith, Elysia addresses her in a small voice. "You can use your crowbar if you want...there's also plenty of tools for picking locks in the Library - the room where the pool is. You might as well try; they'll probably work better for you...as usual..."

I love the dynamic between Elysia and her image of Faith
Faith gathers a thieves tool kit for herself, but chooses to break open the drawer instead of picking the lock. Elysia would be even more vexed if Faith managed to pick that lock where she failed. She is not going to do that to her.
That staff is enchanted - what kind of magic I can't say. Did he use while fighting you guys?
What are these large letters on the wall? The entire wall have magic - usually that happens with its an illutionary wall She tries to break the illusion. First she examines the edges of the wall to see if it matches with the non-magic part of the surroundings. Then she simply pokes the wall with her finger.

Morik placed his fists on his waists and stared at the large letters on the wall. "Maybe they're jumbled up to spell words? Or maybe they're magical words. What do you think, Jeffery?" He shrugged his shoulder where the newt resided.

Faith shrugs and jams the beak of the crow into the drawer and then levers it open with a splintering crack.
Elysia winces at the sound. Pulling the broken drawer open reveals a finely-tooled leather bandolier holding three expertly balanced daggers, and a small parcel wrapped in black silk. Faith's glowing eyes confirm that none of it is magical.

She turns to the locked door, prepared to lever it open, too. But as she starts to gouge into the wood, working the beak into the gap, Morik clears his throat. With his higher passive perception, he noticed what the others did not: a key on a chain dangling unobtrusively from a torch sconce in the room. The PCs take the key and try it on the door: it fits, and the door unlocks with the clicks of well-oiled tumblers. A short flight of stairs leads down into a lower chamber where all the food and drink was kept. Further examination reveals that all the food and drink is stacked on and around four large stone sarcophagi, and Faith's eyes reveal that there is abjuration magic in each one (which means that the lids are less than a foot thick).

Going back to the Storeroom, Faith rejoins Ishi, who has finished clearing the path to the back wall, which is still glowing with the last of her Bealdor-enhanced vision. As the spell fades and her vision returns to normal, she pushes on the wall, but it is solid, not illusory. They step back and look at the large letters carved into the stone, each one a foot high:

THEFO
ATHBA
OLUND
ONELS

Morik consults with Jeffery, but the newt is silent with deep thoughts. ::It probably is a jumble,:: the druid thinks. ::Those aren't any magic words I've ever heard or read.::

Happy to have reacquainted with one of the few childhood contacts she had, Eozindra settles into studying the papers and notes found among the desk. She reads over the handshake graphics with a slight chuckle, turns to the collection of passwords and phrases with a scrutinizing eye, then skims through the books with margin-notes and parchments of information on the local nobility.

Once her curiosity has been sated for the papers and notes, she will approach the wall of letters and scrutinize the array with the rest of the group, hoping that perhaps some of the papers she read might offer a clue.

That test reminds me of this old square of words I have seen carved into older stone steps. As I remember those words made sense read left to right and top to bottom, but not the words themselves.

Faith reads out the words in front of the door. THEFO. ATHBA. OLUND. ONELS. A small part of her mind searches for the energies that these words touches. Is it the shadows or the light that is called?
I think there is some protection magic on those sarcophagi. I have no idea if its to protect something from coming in or out - or its just a perservering spell.
Should we try and open one?
Nov 20, 2024 6:18 am
Eozindra spends some time sorting through the papers, and determines that the current passphrase is:
"For Blood and Love"

While the others are investigating other things, she spends time reading through the dossiers of the Grayhaven nobility. Quickly she is absorbed in the study, and calls Elysia over to see, as well. The two of them realize that there are detailed notes on the schedules and locations of many of the most high and wealthy. Unscrupulous actors could use this information to orchestrate elaborate thefts, particularly by exact timing to avoid guard patrols and other surveillance.
OOC:
Eozindra, Elysia, and anyone else who spends an hour or more studying these documents can make all their Stealth checks in such heists with ADV.
They do discover another item of interest in among all the other information about the rich residents: a section on Duke Dain Draymore himself. They read it with some excitement at first, and then some confusion. It reads:
"The Duke's great secret is that he is a respected man who loves his cheese: a goat."
Then, in a different hand, arrows have been drawn to the last word, along with:
"Goat?
Man??
GOAT??
MAN?!??
"
OOC:
This study of the papers will take some time, long enough for the others to complete some other actions/investigations of the Abbey in parallel. If anyone needs Tykus' map or anything else from Elysia, she's happy to hand it over, but remains very absorbed in reading the dossiers with her sister.

Wracking my head trying to figure out this word puzzle thing. Thought it might be some anagram, but the best I can get are:

1. ON THE BOUNDS OF ALL HATE
2. THE OATHBOUND ONE FALLS

But those make no sense. Anyone have any other thoughts?

Faith springs up. say that again! "The oathbound falls".

She seems shake That sounds like a paladin who have lost her way

Might not be relevant, but that is close to the core of Faiths character concept

runekyndig says:
Faith says, "I think there is some protection magic on those sarcophagi. I have no idea if its to protect something from coming in or out - or its just a perservering spell. Should we try and open one?"
Curious, Ishi followed Faith into the larder/Crypt, and bent to examine the sarcophagi. But they were covered with containers, so, once again, he found himself moving boxes, sacks, and barrels out of the way. Then he peered closer at the stone coffins. "There's something carved here," he says, but its difficult to make out in the dark now that Faith's eyes aren't glowing anymore. He climbs back into the Entry Hall, takes one of the lit torches from a sconce, and returns with the flickering light. "I thought so...see, here: I think it says something, but I can't read it." He look expectantly for any others nearby, certain that they can read better than someone raised by orcs in the wilderness. But then he realizes that all the others have left him here, and he rushes off to find the others and tell them about the inscription he found on the sarcophagi...
Nov 21, 2024 7:48 am
As Faith says "The oathbound falls," the letters F A L L incised in the wall glimmer briefly.

Then the glow fades, the solid stone cracks, and the entire wall abruptly collapses into tiny chunks, no larger than a cobble, with a shuddering cascade. A dark hallway stretching into the east is revealed, along with a puff of truly ancient, stale air.

Ishi arrives then, and comes to a stop, astonished at the demolition of the stone wall. "Uh! I, uh....oh, I wanted to see if any of you could help. I discovered that there is writing on the sarcophagi in the other room - you know, where Faith revealed there was magic? - but I can't read it."
Nov 21, 2024 8:05 am
Morik was still muttering and looking at the wall when some of the letters glowed and then the wall crumbled. He turned to look at Faith, his mouth hanging open, then turned back towards the open hole.

Ishi ran up to them, said something about a sarcophagi, but Morik only had a mind for what he was staring at.

"Hmm. Well. Best we get the group together before venturing in there."
OOC:
I am curious what’s in the sarcophagi as well, but it made sense that Morik’s a bit muddled right now.

So, what was the puzzle’s solution…?
Nov 21, 2024 8:32 am
My gut says that we should check out the sarcophagi before we go down this path.

She follows Ishi to examin the sarcophagi one more time.
Nov 21, 2024 4:16 pm
The party returns to the Crypt. Now that the sarcophagi have been cleared of all the food supplies, the adventurers see that each of the four have the worn remains of carved inscriptions on the lids. Each seems to be in a different ancient script.

Morik is able to read one in antiquated Dwarven runes, while Adran, Elysia, and Eozindra can read another written in Elvish runes. Everyone can read the third, using really old Drakalli letters, and none of you can read the fourth. But the ones you can read all say essentially the same thing:

FOUNDER OF THIS ABBEY
MAY IT PRESERVE THE GREENWOLD
AGAINST DESTRUCTION FOR
AS LONG AS IT STANDS

It appears as if there were also names inscribed originally, but they are no longer readable. Elysia checks the sarcophagi and confirms that they are not trapped in any way.
OOC:
Not saying you should or shouldn't, but anyone who cares to open a sarcophagus to investigate the magic that Faith detected within may do so with a DC12 STR (Athletics) check, which will be made with ADV if using a crowbar or similar lever and the party doesn't care about the noise of the lid falling to the ground.
Nov 21, 2024 6:26 pm
This’d be much easier if I were a bear, Morik thought. "I’m not one for opening folks’ restin’ place, but, well… fate of the world and all that." He shrugged.

"Come on then."
OOC:
Morik will use the Help action to give Advantage to someone strong (Ishi?)
Nov 21, 2024 7:02 pm
Faith works her crowbar on sarcophagi. She pops open the lid and careful moves it enough to look into the coffins.
To what (or who) -ever is inside she speaks
Founder of this abbey. We seek to preserve the greenwold against the evil that threatens it. These fine folks have already vanquished the evil that dwelled in your resting place - at greater cost. Allow us to use your strengths to continue this quest.
Then she referently extracted the item she detected.
OOC:
