Hosford Merrywife has purchased a herd of marsh-drakes and intends to drive them to the town of Candlefen for sale. She is aware of the bandits that might lie in wait on the road through the vast Dragon Wood, and has hired you to keep her and the marsh-drakes safe.

Hosford Merrywife has paid you 20gp each up front, and she will pay the party an extra 10gp per marsh-drake that makes it safely to its destination. She has 20 marsh-drakes.

You have heard that the town of Candlefen is having some sort of problem and is looking to hire adventurers, so this is on your way anyway.

Ygne had been moping for the past few hours, and it didn't look like there was much of an end in sight. The young lady had found a fruitful berry bush just off of the road earlier, and despite any insistence that she leave it alone, she had climbed through it to get the ripest handfuls of berries. By the time she realized the bush was covered in burrs it was too late, and Ygne's wolf-fur clothing was covered in prickly seeds. She cursed for a solid half-minute as she tried her best to brush them out. The berries turned out to be sour, anyhow, and they were tossed off the side of the path moments later.

Now she was grumbling, digging burrs out of her hair and flicking them at the marsh-drakes when Hosford wasn't looking. Succeeding at this task was all that seemed to bring her joy on an otherwise unfortunate day for her. It wasn't certain why she would take this job; she appeared entirely uninterested. In her late adolescent years or perhaps her early twenties, Ygne looked entirely out of place for the typical commoner of her age. Instead of gowns or cloth clothes, she wore wolf hide and fur, including the head of the pelt which she used as a hood when the northern breeze rolled in. Her skin was darkened by the sun and riddled with dirt stains and small scars, covered here and there with what seemed like red warpaint. Her hair was matted and tangled, like no attempt has been made to tame it in months. She carried a one-handed half-spear in her right hand and a layer of thick wood banded together was strapped to her back.

It had become obvious very early in the journey that Ygne didn't speak common as well as most, judging by her broken dialect and common misuse of words. "This stinks," she sulked, flicking another burr at a marsh-drake, "When do we get t' Candy Fen an' say g'bye to the wish-be dragons?"

Hosford Merrywife makes small talk with the party as you carry on your journey to Candlefen. She asks whether any of you have been to Candlefen before, then immediately chides herself - "Course you haven't. Don't mind me. Anyway, deep in the Dragon Wood it is. That keeps it safe for the most part as most won't wander that far, but the approaches to it are always riddled with Bandits. And Marsh Drakes fetch a fair price at market."

The Marsh Drakes are fairly docile, and are big enough to need to be driven like cattle which Hosford is busying herself doing when talking to you.
Oct 10, 2016 6:57 pm
Quietly surveying the land around it, Robon listens casually to the conversation taking place. It's so different above ground, muses forgeborn to itself. Turning it's mechanical head, the forgebren asks Hosford, "What is Candelfen like? I'm not familiar with it, or the surrounding area?"
Oct 10, 2016 7:14 pm
"Trees, trees, trees. That's all that's in lousy Dragon Wood," Ygne mutters, picking another burr off of her arm. "Candlefan is probably made of trees, too," She continues, dragging her feet noisily over the dirt, "The Wild Wood's got better trees; an' streams n' rocks, too."

She wrinkles her nose, "An' no stinkin' cow-dragons."

In the back of the pack, there was Jack.

Jack Nearden's gaze followed a golden coin as it tumbled through the air, before it atop the thumb and forefinger of his left hand. He flicked upwards and the coin retraced it's path for the thousandth time, arcing upwards and slightly forwards before landing again on his thumb, two steps later. The escort business was a dull one, despite what the ladies of Shadowport's seedier alleys might insist. Jack had been flipping this coin for nearly an hour, and it was a painful surge of boredom that caused him to flick the coin as hard as he could, sending it streaking towards some of the others in their traveling group.

As he was about to give half-hearted chase, Jack noticed one of the marsh dragons setting to strike out on its own, likely hoping to escape the infinite servitude it had been gifted by fate. Jack could relate! But he greatly fancied the idea of getting paid, and so instead he cut the marsh dragon off and shooed it back towards the herd with a few kicking gestures at the air near it. The hiss of annoyance from the creature was a welcome one, reminding him of his former circus home and the wild animals that were featured players.

"Buying my silence is twenty gold, Lizard. Cough it up or keep in line."

Speaking of gold, Jack trotted forward to catch up to his coin, bringing him within proximity of an annoyed young woman. "Trees and trees and trees and maybe bandits!" he chimed in, sounding a bit less threatened than maybe he should. "Are there bandits in the Wild Wood?" He was sure there probably were, but perhaps it'd change the mood to ask. "Also, have you seen a gold coin roll by?"

Ygne's eyes light up at the mention of bandits, and she gives a quick cursory glance around herself as though they might be listening in. "Not anymore," She whispers, grinning wickedly at Jack while turning her spear about in her hand.

"Coin?" she ponders, glancing around at her feet, treading carefully as though she might harm it if she stepped on it. "No." She answers abruptly.

"But the Wild Wood is the greatest, most wonderful place! Why not sell your stinky lizards there, Mary?" Ygne asks all too loudly, neglecting to consider how it's on the other end of the Dragon Empire.

The Half-Elf, who was buried in his books, loses concentration because of all the chatter around him. "Can we keep it a teensy bit quieter. I am trying to read here."
Oct 10, 2016 9:42 pm
"Hah!" came Jack's reply, when the unkempt girl implied that she'd done a little pest control in the woods she seemingly came from. His amusement faltered when she claimed that she didn't see the coin, but out of the corner of his eye he noticed one of the marsh dragons sniffing at something on the ground.

Jack pulled a piece of dried jerky from one of his many pockets, tearing off a small piece and tossing it into the brush a few feet away. The sniffer and a friend lurched towards it, giving Jack a chance to crouch down and retrieve his coin. He stood and moved to catch up with the others, looking the Half-Elf's way when he protested their volume.

"Eternal apologies, Tomlin! I understand thoroughly. I knew a mage once, had to cast a spell to deafen himself, or else a single cough from the crowd meant somebody was about to get maimed..." Jack wore a wistful look as he soaked in that memory.

Milo is keeping the most quiet of the group. He is a white-haired man of average height with a build of lean dense muscle. His face bears a single scar across it, but otherwise he has an approachable, calm look about him. He looks more priest than fighter, hardly an adventurer. He wears white robes with a black accented covering, A red belt, Leather bracers, and thick leather tabi. On his neck is a necklace of large beads the size of apples. His clothes seemed to be very clean for so much travel. Other than his traveling pack, he carries only a staff with a series of rings on the end. They clang as he walks, due to him using the staff as a walking stick.
He had not known these people for long, and was pleased to be doing simple work for a change as he heads towards Candlefen. Compared to the mountains he had been staying and training for the last ten or so years, the wooded roads were very comfortable. Shade protects from the hot sun, but does not cause it to be overly cold. He walks along humming and smiling. He is particularly pleased to be working with a forgeborn. He had never seen one before that was allowed to do as it wished.
He appreciates that Tomlin would like it to be quiet for his reading and thus does not walk near him least the sound of dancing metal on his staff disturb the half-elf. Ygne was one he had been worried about, eating strange berries and the like, but he decided not to interfere with her actions earlier. It was not his place to tell others what they are to do. The only one he had even heard of before this venture was Jack, but he elected not to discuss his doings either.
All in all, Milo was pleased to be moving again, and hoped very much that he will do some good with these people.
Oct 10, 2016 10:46 pm
Ygne grinned a big, toothy smile when Jack laughed, and she strut about proudly for a few paces at having humored him. She was disturbed from her small victory when Tomlin spoke up, however. She picked another burr out of her hood and flicked it at him. When she spoke, she was none quieter than before; perhaps somewhat louder, "What're ya readin', then?"

"Oh, it's a treatise on the Elven Dwarven relations. The effects of the peace treaty and the initial opposition it faced in both societies.", Tomlin mentions enthusiastically.

Guys - I'd like to do a travel montage to the Dragon Wood. Can the next person to post please post about an obstacle/encounter the group faces on the journey. The next person to post then details how the party overcame this obstacle. Be creative.

One morning, the marsh dragon shepherd and her hired help awake to find that a thick, smothering fog has settled upon the Dragonwood, deadening the natural sounds of the forest and carrying a feeling of dread throughout its heavy vapor.

The party continues despite low visibility, encouraged by the deadlines set at the outset of their journey. Before long, they come upon a large carriage in the road, upright but completely unmoving. The harness where animals should be is empty, and more unnervingly, there are no people nearby.

There is no sign that this carriage has been looted, as a few valuables remain inside, a container with enough food for a moderately long journey, a small tome with a bookmark amongst the final few pages, and a small caged yellow bird that cocks it's head and chirps when encountered.

Though there was no sign of a struggle at the carriage, the party eventually decided to check around before they moved on. It didn't sit right with everyone to simply pass on. Unfortunately after over two hours of searching, no evidence of the carriage's travelers were found. The group was puzzled by the strange lack of ownership. After some disagreement on what to do with the carriage, Hosford put her foot down and said to move on without disturbing it. She is a superstitious woman and didn't want to "Fall into some ghost's trap". The group moved on, hoping to find the owners along the road.
The fog did not let up, and eventually the group found visibility so low they could lose track of each other if they ventured more than twenty feet from one another. Then the strangest thing happened. The group found themselves at the carriage again, despite certainly moving forward along the road away from it. They, at first, thought it to be a new carriage in a similar circumstance, but the same yellow bird was inside. Perhaps they got turned around? Or perhaps...

There was a good bit of conversation about the carriage at that point, and after Ygne ran a few laps in this cursed loop they'd stumbled upon, it was certain that this was no coincidence. Tomlin elected to read the book stored within, flipping through to the bookmark to find an unsettling passage.

"It is He that wears the color of madness." Their studious companion read aloud. The bird chirped, and Tomlin continued, "It is He. It is He. I've made these steps a thousand times, though I run in place. I look at my companion and my mind burns yellow." As he studied other pages, Hosford frowned and protested nervously. This didn't keep Jack and Robon from searching around the site while Milo pondered the nature of this cursed area. Eventually Robon discovered a small key, half-buried in the soil, perfectly sized to fit into the bird's cage. It chirped, flapping its wings against its confines madly.
Oct 11, 2016 5:05 pm
So much of that encounter baffled Robon. It knew the dwarven tunnels backwards and forwards, but here, in all this open space, it seemed like a circular path was impossible. How could one get mixed when you could walk in literally any direction? Yet, there they were walking in circles. There was magic there. A trick. We had been toyed with by the owners of the caravan. With no living thing in sight though, there was nothing to focus on except the bird. Maybe the book? Ynge had looked them over and come back with arcane phrases. Clues of some sort? Who knew? The dwares kept records of important things, the forgeborn had thought to itself then. Perhaps there was useful information in the book. Milo and Jack had also spent time searching for clues. Was this a trap? A practical joke? It had been magical in nature, and of course the source was right in front of their faces. The group had fanned out, seeking clues only to come face to face with a small family that had concealed itself in shadows that none of the convoy had taken notice of. Hosford was unsettled and spent time among his cargo trying to keep calm and under control. No one wanted a marsh-drake stampede.
OOC:
I mist have been writing this while Robon was discovering the key. Ok...
Robon picked up the key it had found, unsure of what to do with it. Looking at the previously concealed people it said, Perhaps these people know what is going on here?

Jack sat on a stump within sight of both carriage and found family, chomping on an apple that he'd taken from inside the spooky cart when he'd been pretty sure that there were no people that'd be found. He felt a little bad now that they'd actually found some, but they'd probably understand.

"Soooo.... this all raises a BUNCH of questions. First, why's the key in the dirt? Why are you people hiding? Why is there a freaky book and what does it mean? Lastly...you don't mind that I took this, right?" he said, gesturing with the apple before taking another bite.

All in all, Jack's demeanor and tone suggested someone who felt much less perturbed than perhaps he should.

Milo bows his head to the people and takes several steps towards them, giving a genuine smile. "Hello. Don't mind him there, we will certainly pay for the apple." He says pointing to Jack.
"Are you lost? We are having a hard time moving along ourselves, and we certainly wouldn't mind helping each other out."

Milo does his best to keep his aura unassuming and friendly, not wanting to scare away people who may need help.

"That was a rather harrowing experience... I have to say it is nothing like I have read about before. Maybe we can find someone in the town who has more knowledge about it. Maybe I should have checked it for magical disturbances.", says Tomlin.
Oct 11, 2016 10:18 pm
The family explain that their transport was attacked by shambling figures not an hour since. The young girl, Virelda, explains that she thought they may have been zombies so her and her brother Tobas and little sister Jenna, hid in a secret compartment in the caravan until such time as they were sure you were not bandits, then crept out.

Hosford is keen to keep moving to Candlefen. "We can take these children with us. The town elders will provide better hands for these babes to be held by than anything which lurks in the night in Dragon Wood."

She harnesses two Marsh Drakes to the harnesses on the caravan, looks you all up and down and asks: "So what say you all, do we go onwards?"
Oct 11, 2016 10:56 pm
Jack finished his apple, and tossed the core to one of the unleashed cattle lizards. The thing snapped it up eagerly, and Jack gave a delighted grin before looking back to the trio of young carriage owners. "Kids, keep your distance from our flock. They seem preeeeetty famished."

"Ever forwards," he replied lackadaisically over one shoulder to Hosford. He was facing only Ygne, and he drew his cloak open just enough to show a second apple tucked within.
Oct 11, 2016 11:02 pm
"Any'un else think that fog smelled off?" Ygne pondered, sniffing a bit. Perhaps there'd be something wrong about it that had them turned around repeatedly. When she spotted the second apple that Jack had stolen, her eyes lit up and she beamed, quickly forgetting any worries about the fog. She gave him a quick, affirming nod, none too subtly, before she addressed the kids, "Anythin' happens, an' you just stick near me, young'uns! I'm usually Ygne the Wicked, but.. today I'll be Ygne the Heroic and see you to a new home!"

She began to march beside the carriage, idly chatting, "It'll be great. New home, new food to try, new parents; You'll love it!"

Pleased with the outcome, Robon agreed to push forward with the rest. This is a worthwhile outcome, but we must keep our guard up. The additional carriage could be good help, and surely the journey can't be too perilous to their destination if that family had also made the trip.
Oct 12, 2016 9:30 am
As your curious ramshackle group of travellers continues into the Dragon Wood, the road becomes progressively worse and more difficult to traverse. As night falls, you hear the sound of a stream up ahead which grows louder with every step you take. As you round a bend in the road you become aware of a small, ramshackle bridge over the stream.

While this catches your attention, it doesn't grab it as much as the sight of an eerie glowing face, lit by a lantern held out at arms length - there is someone on the bridge, and not just one person. Behind the lantern bearer stand two shambling figures, although from the distance you stand they are merely shadows.

A wispy female voice breaks the awkward silence - "Good evening. To where do you travel? Maybe we can accompany you if our paths point in the same direction".
Oct 12, 2016 1:02 pm
The scene is pretty, and Robon enjoys it immensely, but the aged woman that has addressed the group is hard to look away from. In this case though, rather than speak, Robon defers to the others around, and looks expectantly at Hosford.
Oct 12, 2016 1:06 pm
Milo takes a few steps forward ahead of the group to address the woman. "Of course, we head to Candlefen. If you are stuck in this wood, then we do not mind you coming along."

Oct 12, 2016 3:24 pm
Throughout this difficult leg of the journey, Jack keeps to the fringes of the makeshift convoy. Occasionally he walks parallel to it while off the path, or volunteers to scout ahead when the going is particularly slow, at the present junction, he trails a few meters behind the carriage, holding a torch aloft in one hand, and rolling a coin along his fingers with the other.

The sudden stop accentuated by an unfamiliar voice means that Jack's free hand stashes the coin and moves to grip the hilt of a dagger holstered against the small of his back. He leaves he talking to others, but steps forward enough to hear it.

Ygne strides up next to Milo, shoving her left forearm through the straps of her makeshift shield and getting a firm grip on her spear. She calls out after Milo's address, "Except we would mind! We're in bandit 'fested woods, so we don't offer rides t' strangers!" Ygne makes a face, points at the children and says, "Except those strangers!" She then drives the tip of her spear in the ground and shouts, "So get outta th' way 'fore you catch a beating!"

Rather than detect criminality, you detect an awkward nature to the ladies two companions. Criminals would never be this lacking in confidence or style. One of the ladies companions appears to be shuffling it's feet in a strange little nervous dance while the other shrugs it's shoulders continuously, despite no question apparently being asked of it.
Oct 12, 2016 10:02 pm
Milo, not wanting to assume the worst in them, takes a few more steps forward. "Are you two nervous? Or perhaps sick?" He keeps a wary eye on them, but still says "I may be able to help you."

They don't smell so good and by really straining your eyes, you'd swear they were slightly past their sell-by date.

Growing tired of their silence, Ygne huffs in irritation. "These three are dumber than the dragon-cows," she grumbles, striding toward the bridge and shouting "That's it! Get off an' let us through!"

Rolls

Ygne will step up to the bridge and try to shove past them.

Oct 13, 2016 10:16 pm
Ygne barges through the middle of the three figures on the bridge. As she does so, she identifies them as a female dark elf and two rather awkward looking zombies.

The dark elf regains her composure after being barged into and says in a calm voice: "Please do not be so rude. We merely look for company on the road. May I introduce myself, I am Mekrien Silverleaf and the my two deceased friends answer to the names of 'Shuffle' and 'Shrug' respectively. May we join you?"

Hosford Merrywife immediately registers her objection from her position at the back of the group. "We don't need no company. Especially not those who we can little trust. And those dead things will scare my Marsh Drakes an' all."
Oct 14, 2016 3:32 am
Immediately picking up on Hosford's objection, Robon resolutely backs. "Please now, carry on. We have a long distance to go and must make haste. Your cooperation is appreciated." The forgeborn maintains its place and attempts to puff itself a bit to look bit more intimidating to the dark elf.
Oct 14, 2016 2:03 pm
Milo gives a weak smile at Ygne as she behaves so rudely, but at Hosford's hesitation he yields. "I apologize, it is not in my authority to allow you to join us. I am glad you have some form of..." He gives a raised eyebrow to the shammblers "...protection." He returns to his normal smile. "Do be wary from bandits."
Oct 14, 2016 8:11 pm
Ygne huffs in irritation, standing her ground on the other side of the three, upon the bridge. The fact that she hadn't been attacked by now meant that these three were possibly not as dangerous as she'd expected. Not that Ygne would ever admit that. "Every Elf I've met is named Silverleaf, anyhow," she grumbles quietly, childishly, "Probably made it up."

She rests her spear in the crook of her arm and makes a shooing motion with the freed hand.
Oct 14, 2016 9:11 pm
Jack watched things unfold from his place at the back, growing restless as the two groups spoke. A brow piqued with interest when Ygne brashly forced her way forward, but his hopes for a moment of excitement were dashed when the trio went unprovoked. Not that he wanted them to attack her, of course! But it'd give him a sense that he was actually EARNING the money he was getting from this job.

He didn't have much of an opinion about letting the three travel with them. It was definitely a suspicious group, but it wouldn't have been too difficult to stage an ambush, and they hadn't done that. But Jack'd only been compensated for the woman and her marsh dragons, the kids in the carriage were already stretching the limits of his charity. However...

"What if they pay us for the muscle?" he called from the back, in Hosford's direction.
Oct 14, 2016 10:41 pm
In contrast to Jack's near-excitement at the prospect of some action, Milo was quite pleased that only a few setbacks had befallen the group. He was in no mood to fight, least of all a woman who may actually just want help. Hearing Knife-Eye's proposal to his current employer, Milo holds his breathe for Hosford's response. He very much would like to help the woman, despite her foul-smelling guards, but considers it far from his place to outright allow it. Still, if Hosford accepted the Theif's idea, then it would allow him to do so.
Oct 15, 2016 11:47 am
Hosford turns to Jack and says "I'll take their money. Good as anyone else's. But dead things, well theys meant to stay dead isn't they. I'll take the money but don't expect me to be guarding them. That's down to you fellas. I'll have one eye on me drakes and the other on me back."
Oct 15, 2016 3:43 pm
Ygne looks concerned by Hosford's statement. Suddenly her eye twitches. She goes cross-eyed for just a moment before she blinks rapidly and rubs at her peepers.

"Yes!" Ygne approves of Jack's plan, thumping the butt of her spear on a plank of the wooden bridge. "Why jus' part ways when we could have them give us their gold? Just in case they're bandits. Bandits 'ave lots of gold." Ygne's smile is beaming bright, proud of herself despite it being Jack's plan.

As night begins to fall you are looking for a place to camp. A whistling sound draws your attention to the sky to something that is commonly known as the Archmage’s Comet. This strange phenomena appeared a month ago, a comet that moves erratically across the sky and sometimes disappears for days at a time. The whistling at first sounds distant, like the warbling of a bird, but it grows painfully and piercingly loud as the comet seems to momentarily change course.

The comet brightens, and an instant later the Dragon Wood is shaken by a loud explosion. The comet is still intact, but several chunks have fallen off it!

Suddenly the Dragon Wood is pelted by red-hot rocks from the sky! Trees explode. The marsh-drakes panic and begin running away.
Oct 17, 2016 5:12 pm
Milo is quick to react, He leaps from his bedroll, forgoing his staff and pack, and looks about to get his bearings, ensuring none of his allies have been injured. His heart beating with adrenaline, he takes off after one set of marsh drakes once he notices their dispersal.
"I'll get these back! Someone get thoe over there!" Milo yells over the pandemonium.

Can anyone who is attempting to herd/capture the marsh drakes give me a skill roll (1d20 + dex mod + level).
Oct 17, 2016 9:36 pm
Robon reacts out of instinct and wildly chases after the marsh-drakes, in an attempt to get them all under control.

"Do any of you have these things under control?" Robon shouts to his colleagues. "We may need to coordinate out efforts. Hosford, is there a trick to getting their attention?"

Jack flinches when the world explodes and all hell breaks loose, but there is no panic in the lithe man as shards of wood rain upon him or strike his leather armor. Explosions are old hat for the once-performer, as magical showmanship had been an incessant part of daily life. And there were few things a wild mage seemed to love more than blowing things up.

He was not entirely without alarm, as the sight of the fleeing marsh drakes meant that his payday was scattering into the ravaged forest. "Ohhh no you don't!" the man said, sprinting to try and outrun the drakes, hoping to cut them off and keep them from running away by tempting them with more samples of jerky.

"Oh, look! Fire!" Ygne shouts as the comet meanders about the sky. Soon, however, her words are more true than she originally intended, as pieces of the comet blast the wood around the group. Ygne crouches low, curses aloud as she tries to find some kind of cover. When the lizards all begin to flee, she scowls, stands up tall, and bellows, "Get back here, stink-dragons! GET IN LINE!"

Jack and Robon manage to catch 2 Marsh Drakes each and Ygne manages to grab hold of 3. Milo does best of all, capturing 5. There are still 8 of them running around in a blind panic.
Oct 18, 2016 9:49 pm
Milo breathes hard, having a rough time with the beasts. "I'd no idea they would be so skittish!"
He drains some water from his canteen, and heads after those remaining. He can no longer see them, but goes in the direction he remembers seeing them go. As he jogs he wonders about the comet, "I've heard so little about falling stars, I never imagined they would be so dangerous!". He glances at the various craters and blown apart woods and shakes his head. "So much for being fun celestial events to wish upon."

All of the remaining marsh drakes are captured and Hosford Merrywife expresses her gratitude. Night is falling fast though and it's looking unlikely you will reach Candlefen tonight. Mekrien suggests making camp for the night, suggesting Shuffle and Shrug as excellent guards given the fact that they are technically dead and therefore have little need for sleep.
Oct 19, 2016 2:52 pm
Milo, completely spent from his herding, agrees as long as he can get right to sleep. He unpacks his bedroll and curls up for a deep and restful sleep, skipping his meditation for the night. Normally the thought of only undead watching over him would keep him from it, but he hadn't worked so hard in a long time.
Oct 20, 2016 4:30 am
As the group begins to settle down, Jack feeds a final piece of jerky to the oldest and slowest marsh drake, the one that always seemed to take the longest to get going whenever the group had finished a rest. The drake plops onto its side with an elderly groan, ready to sleep. Jack drops into a sitting position beside the creature, glancing over his shoulder for a moment before slowly falling backwards, coming to rest with his head on the marsh drake's belly, using it as a pillow. It kept his head tilted at an angle that kept the two undead creatures in his line of sight, because he sure as heck didn't trust them.
Oct 20, 2016 10:11 am
As the night proceeds you all fall in and out of slumber. At 2am, Jack can swear he hears rustling in the trees about 50 yards distant. More worryingly, it sounds like there is rustling in all directions. Then it falls still before a lilting, sinister tone calls out from the trees:
"Drakes, drakes, your lives for your drakes."

Shuffle and Shrug do just that in a frantic, nervous way, looking marginally less brave than already dead, lumbering creatures should.
Oct 22, 2016 7:02 pm
OOC:
Are we all woken by this, or only Jack?
Oct 22, 2016 9:44 pm
OOC:
Whoops, sorry!
Jack leaps to his feet as the rustling begins, turning in a slow arc to try and pinpoint the source, though it seems to be everywhere. He frowns at the two useless sentries, and brings two fingers to his lips to let out a sharp whistle, hopefully waking the others from their sleep.
Oct 23, 2016 2:19 am
"Ready!" says Robon Quickly scanning the area it notes Jack alert and surprised. "What's happening? Are the marsh-drakes running away again?" Stopping to listen for a threat, it's unclear that there is anything immediately present. Still, magic can hide anything, so...there could be pretty much anything out there.

Robon looks out into the surroundings and awaits either orders or some whatever menacing entity may have disturbed Jack.
Oct 23, 2016 3:38 pm
MoMo says:
OOC:
Are we all woken by this, or only Jack?
OOC:
All of you are eventually woken by this.
You become aware of shadows moving on the edge of the clearing.
"Give us the Drakes and we'll spare your lives. Otherwise we'll have the Drakes and your lives. I don't like to break a sweat but I will if I have to."
Oct 24, 2016 1:27 am
"You're probably going to have to. The drakes stay with us," says Robon as definatly as possible. What are these things to be worth so much to people? It wonders considering the effort being made to herd them from point A to point B.
OOC:
I'd like to roll to see if I can pinpoint the location of where the threat is coming from. How does 1d20+Wis+Bodyguard+lvl sound?
Oct 24, 2016 1:41 am
"A fight!" Ygne says, startling awake and springing to her feet. She grabs up her shield and spear, glancing around herself for any sign of the threat. "Been waitin' for you for a week now!" She shouts, charging the treeline blindly.

Milo wakes up last and yawns rubbing his eyes. He quickly reads the situation, having missed the threat. "Listen friends, we don't have to do this. You can leave us be." He tries to warn them, reaching down and picking up his staff. Then Ygne charges! "There goes any chance for a peaceful way out of this." He thinks as he watches her go.
Oct 24, 2016 10:52 am
OOC:
Ygne identifies at least 9 threatening shapes in the woods beyond the clearing you have camped in. Ladies and Gentlemen. Please roll initiative.
Two arrows thunk into the ground not 10 yards from where you are all standing. Whether a warning or just clumsy shooting you cannot discern. However, thing don't seem destined to take a friendly turn.
Oct 24, 2016 6:45 pm
Jack considers trying to negotiate with their ambushers, but the slim chance of that working became 'none' once Ygne rushed headfirst at them and two arrows 'CHUNK'ed into the ground nearby. Jack readied his blades, but his first act would be to try and blend into the darkness, intending to circle around and take one of these (presumed) bandits by surprise.

Tomlin appears to have been AWOL since 11th Oct.

Ygne, you're up to start things off.
Oct 25, 2016 4:39 pm
Ygne, whose feet had her moving before her eyes spotted any threats, steers her course in the direction of the largest concentration of enemies and engages one of the bandits. "You die first," she grins, eyes wide at her opponent. It is curious why she even carries a shield, as she stabs so wildly and dances about so much that she hardly uses it.

The Thug swings wildly at Robon who manages to drop his shoulder and push his attacker off balance and the mace blow swings harmlessly over Robon's head.

Mekrien groans however as both bolts find their mark, one in her shoulder and the other in her thigh.
OOC:
10 damage to Mekrien. I also somehow developed NPC blindness and forgot to include Mekrien, Shuffle and Shrug in initiative order. I rolled a 4 for them - did it old school with a real d20 I had to hand. They rolled a 4. Initiative order is as follows.

With Milo under attack, Robon steps forward and lays into the thug attacking it's colleague. The forgeborn's spear flies out at its foe, and it moves to engage the enemy. The forgeborn laments that it's allies have all charged off after the enemies with no plan of action.

"We must work together to beat these fools," Robon shouts to Milo. "We cannot give them any chance to let us be disorganized."

The three thugs attacked by your new allies take a pounding. The first (Thug 2) is sent reeling by Mekrien's Shadow Bolt and the other two are grabbed by Shuffle and Shrug respectively in some kind of awe-inspiring death grip.
OOC:
Thug 2 is staggered. Very staggered. Back to the top of the initiative order with Ygne.

Despite Robon's warnings, Ygne is an expert at being disorganized. This disorganization is particular showcased by the way she stumbles forward, past her opponent, before spinning around and attempting to make it look intentional. Appearing utterly frustrated at her failed attempt, Ygne snarls and jabs with her spear once again. "If I say die, then you need to die!" She shouts in annoyance.

Both archers find their mark with two more bolts rattling into Mekrien's flesh.
OOC:

Nov 1, 2016 6:22 pm
Milo heads from the one he felled to the next one, focusing on the nearest archer to himself. He rushes forward at the foe and throws his elbow forward in a fierce strike! He hopes to break the opponents nose and keep him from being able to aim!
"Don't hold this against me!" He shouts as he attacks his target!
His blow is actually from his other style, showing mastery of his art as he is able to switch mid-fight into a new attack!
OOC:
Previous attack, "Water Runs Free" allows him to pop free from an opponent so he can move to this next one. This next blow "Monkey Gives warning" Also allows this. So he will be able to use greeting fist once more.

Nov 6, 2016 1:42 am
Sticking with Milo, Robon sees his mark dive into the bushes as it narrowly evades a blow. "Our foe can't get away so cleanly!" Shouts the forgeborn as it dives into the bush after the enemy.
OOC:
I'm not sure how you want to handle this, maybe a charge attack? Basically, how I'm picturing this is that Robon is throwing itself into the bushes at where it thinks the enemy would have landed. I'll roll to hit, and count this as movement, but should I somehow manage to aim true, what would you like me to do for for damage?
OOC:
Damage is obviously irrelevant, so now I'm in the bushes though, can I at least see the escapee?

OOC:
Robon cannot see the Archer who has melted into the night, plus the arrival of the thug has directed Robon's attention to the more pressing matter of being mashed like a banana. I'm going to apply a -2 penalty to the thug's roll simply because Robon is diving all around in undergrowth like a stuntman and that must surely count as cover of a sort.

Thug 1 is dead.
As Milo was running to Robon's aid, the Thug attacking him takes a desperate swing with his mace.

Jack's eyes widen slightly as the archer manages to land a sword strike on Ygne, and Jack lifts the dagger hand above his head and brings it down against the archer's back, aiming for the base of the neck. If nothing else, his aim is to keep the bastard from taking off.

Robon immediately moves to restrain him.

"You like Marsh Drakes? I'll show you where there are another 15 of the buggers."

Ygne steps up, and pokes lightly at the bandit with the point of her spear, "Or another fifteen of your friends waitin' to ambush us. He should be taught the same lesson as the others about why you don't try to steal from me."
Nov 14, 2016 10:57 pm
Milo puts his fist into the palm of his other hand and bows slightly to the dead bandits. "Bare us no ill will." He says to the fallen men. Then he walks over to those in his party, "Is anyone injured? It was quite a scuffle." He smiles weakly at Robon. "I'm afraid any damage you suffer is likely outside of my know-how."

Milo checks each person in turn, and uses first aid on whatever wound he can. He wraps cuts, binds strains, and cleans wounds. All save for Robon as he is no mechanic. Once everyone has been seen to, he sees to his own injuries.
"Careful now, stop dancing around." He eases at Ygne.
He is attentive to his work, and does his best to help his allies.

"Get offa me!" Ygne shouts when Milo attempts to help her injuries, hopping back and away from him, "I'll dance as much as I like."

She grunts and points at their captive with her spear, "Quick, lets kill this one and move on."
Nov 15, 2016 11:22 pm
OOC:
Ygne and Milo up to full hit points. Mekrien is one short of max.
Nov 16, 2016 5:45 pm
"15 more marsh-drakes. Enticing. Almost as much as handing you over to the authorities," says Robon flatly. "I vote to bring him with us until we get to town. Killing him might end the threat, but it won't provide us with any information, like, where did he and his cohorts come from." And with that Robon momentarily moves so as to block whatever lethal strikes Ynge might be lining up.
Nov 16, 2016 5:49 pm
"Uugghh," Ygne groans, "But why do we care? He robbed us! He and his cohordes could just be all dead and we leave it at that." She holds her arms out to the side, "And no one would care! 'Sides, we've already got one job to do."

OOC:
How about everyone for each side rolls a d20 and adds their charisma modifier. Just list the roll as either 'Kill' or 'Question'. I'll then tally the totals up. Ideally this sort of situation is very easily sorted at a real tabletop because the discussion flows more easily. I just wanted to save us days of skirting around the issue with unclear posts which didn't suggest a party strategy for dealing with the prisoner. In my RL group the bard would already have cut his throat, thus removing the need for discussion :D

As the unnamed assailant slides forward off of Jack's blade and crumples wordlessly to the ground, his killer's white-knuckle grip on his weapon loosens. The sudden cessation of fighting grunts and clashing steel tells Jack that the battle is over, and a quick glance reveals that his own allies still stood.

That's good, he supposes.

His gaze shifts downward to the last man he'd put an end to, his lips tightening in a somewhat pitying frown. The dripping of blood from the point of Jack's weapon catches his eyes, and Jack slowly crouches beside the blood's source. He wipes the blade on an unsullied portion of clothing, once for either side of the steel. He checks the sheen in the moonlight before wiping twice more, finally satisfied with the process after the second attempt.

While battle gives way to bargaining nearby, Jack begins to search the bodies. Selfishly, for valuables that they'd no longer need. Unselfishly, for signs of who they were and why they'd attacked.

Eventually, he chimes into the debate. "At my last job, there was a guard who would take something from anyone who snuck into the show until they paid up, with interest. Two parents snuck in with a kid once, guard kept the kid in an empty bear cage until the parents worked off their debt. Not exactly the same situation here, but this survivor would serve us better as a bargaining chip, in case there're any more like him out there."
Nov 18, 2016 5:10 pm
"If any a' you were bein' kept in a bear cage, I'd gladly take my gold an' leave," Ygne grumbles, perhaps making a decent counter-argument, but really she's just complaining.

You carry on the journey and after a further day's uneventful travel you can see the chimneys of what you presume is Candlefen through the ever thinning wood. Hosford Merrywife rounds up the remaining Marsh Drakes and bustles off ahead of you to the market place in preparation for selling them.
OOC:
She will pay you 200gp when they are sold.
This busy hub village has a feel of the last bastion of freedom and safety for many miles. It's securely fortified with a stockade style spiked wooden wall surrounding it. The main entrance looms ahead and as you approach the gate a guard steps forward and says (in an officious voice) "Welcome to the free village of Candlefen. Please state your business."
Nov 21, 2016 3:52 am
Milo puts his fist in his palm and bows his head slightly, "Greeting good sir. We are adventurers-for-hire, and we are here on business. Simply trying to make ends meat." he says politely. "It has been something of a grueling trip, could you point us in the direction of an inn?"
Nov 21, 2016 10:33 am
Certainly, the Inn is in the main square. Goes by the name of the Sleeping Hound.
He points you to a wood beamed wattle building in the near distance. Smoke is rising from it's chimney and patrons intermittently arrive and depart. The place looks busy. And warm.
Nov 22, 2016 4:36 am
Ygne grunts rudely at the man and passes him by on her way to the inn.
Nov 22, 2016 6:02 pm
Robon follows it's companions to the Sleeping Hound, and thanks the guard, "Well met, and thank you." By now Hosford has disappeared into the crowd and Robon can't help but be intrigued that the marsh-drakes seem to evoke no interest from people in the town despite being attacked on the road. Then it wonders, "Friends, how will we meet Hosford again? Will she be staying at the Sleeping Hound as well? Perhaps we should find this market where the drakes are being sold."
Nov 22, 2016 7:02 pm
Milo smiles "That is a good idea Robon. Let us establish for ourselves room and board and then we will go out to find her together." Milo heads into the inn and rents a room for the day and coming night, paying whatever the standard fare is. He also gives the patrons of the room, as well as the inn itself, a detailed look-over.

As you settle in to the Inn for the night, the innkeep brings your delicious evening meal to the table. As he lays it down he points to the corner of the room where a nervous looking figure leans against the bar as if waiting for his cue.

"I have a gentleman who wants to meet you."

After a gaze from the Innkeeper, the man crosses the room, pulls up a chair and sits at your table.

"Hello and welcome to Candlefen. I am Jon Doonal, one of the town elders." the nervous-seeming man says "I’m glad to see so many adventurers. Naturally your stay here will be free. The town elders will pay for your food and board."

The town elder seems anxious, as though he is expecting trouble or has a lot on his mind.

"You are very gracious." Milo says with respect, giving a genuine smile with his eyes closed for a moment and bowing his head slightly. "Rarely have we been given such a warm reception. Is there perhaps something you would need adventurers for?" He gestures to the others in his group, "We are always on the lookout for good work."
Nov 29, 2016 2:09 am
"Free?" asks Robon incapable of sounding a bit incredulous. "Um, thank you, and my name is Robon." The forgeborn awkwadly salutes Jon before adding, "That is very generous. You seem unsettled though. Is there a problem? Perhaps one we should know about?"

Sorry for the delay!
Jack's eyes flit up to the discussion every so often as he picks at his meal with bare hands, his gloves removed and resting in his lap. His seat balances on the rear two legs, one of Jack's boots hooked around a table leg to keep him from toppling over backwards.

The other two, Milo and Robon, ask the pertinent questions. It certainly was odd to get a free meal and a face-to-face with a 'town elder'.

"Whatever it is.. I accept. Don't like going long without work." Left to his own devices, Jack was the sort to get... antsy.
Nov 29, 2016 9:50 pm
Jon Doonal looks around him as if fearing ears in the walls.

We've had trouble with strange incursions in recent weeks. Figures in porcelain masks who have been probing the defenses of the town. So far they haven't done more than harry us but they're coming with increasing regularity. To be honest, I'm worried that Candlefen will be lost to these strange people before long.
Nov 29, 2016 10:10 pm
Milo listens intently with a furrowed brow. "I see, and you would be wanting us to find out about them for you?" The monk asks, with some skepticism underling his voice, "or were you hoping for something more drastic from us?"
Nov 30, 2016 2:50 pm
The words "probing our defenses..." are echoed as Robon repeats part of the conversation. "I'm sorry Jon, did you want us to look into this, or were you just curious if we knew anything about it?" The nature of the meeting makes Robon skeptical, but he's not uninterested in the prospect of further work, even if sleuthing isn't his forte.
Nov 30, 2016 6:59 pm
Ygne, to this point, had been noisily downing her meal---a small tray of boiled mutton and millet bread---picking the meat with her fingers and shoveling it into her mouth. She narrows her eyes a bit at the elder as he sits down with them, but seems unable to be too distracted from her meal. At one point she stops, a full slice of bread pinched between her teeth, as she starts scratching under her left arm. Eventually she pulls out another bur from the prickly bush she'd fallen into days ago, flicking it away with a grunt before resuming her meal.

At the mention that their food and beds would be free, Ygne very casually waves down a barmaid and signals for another order of meat and drink. She does not seem surprised by the generosity, perhaps downright expecting it. "Only weak, squishy cowards wear masks. Sounds like a bunch a' freaks," Ygne blurts out behind half a mouthful of food, "Of course we'll teach 'em a lesson."

"How much-.." She pauses, swallowing her food and taking a quick swig of water before continuing, "How much does that kind of thing pay around here?"

Jon Doonal lowers his eyes.

Times have been difficult lately. Trade isn't the same. We can offer free food and lodgings for the time being. Once the danger passes and trade returns then we could look at a monetary settlement.

The four of you aren't going to be enough to help us though. If all you do is swell our ranks of fighting troops then you'll have made little difference. We need you to use your skills to prepare defences, traps, train the villagers to fight. They could come back any day or probably any night. We have little time and much to do. Will you help us?
OOC:
If you agree to help the villagers, then there are a number of options.

If you wish to prepare traps for any invaders - give me a skill check with your INT modifier.

If you wish to train the villagers - give me skill check with your CHA modifier.

If you wish to prepare defences - give me a skill check with your STR modifier.

Alternatively, if you have a relevant skill then happy for you to roll on that. If you are preparing defences or traps, can you describe them.

Milo stands from his seat, "Well if we were to refuse we could just as easily be in danger being here. Where is your sick house? I haven't time to train your people to fight, but I can certainly teach them the basics of healing." Once he has his heading, Milo turns to his friends. "I understand if you do not want to stay and help them with me, but I do hope that you will. You all have grown on me somewhat." He heads out the tavern, elated at the excuse to teach the locals his trade.

He leaves and heads to where Jon presumably told him, a large wooden building resembling a church. Once he gets there he finds a somewhat sorry sight: archaic medicine. In the large, one-story, open area inside the sick house he finds rows of cots. Some have sick or injured in them, but not too many. However, those in charge of taking care of the sick and infirm is almost entirely composed of a coven of nuns, with a few volunteers as well. After a quick discussion with the head nun, Milo is unpleasantly met with the information that the nuns still practice bleeding and following the four humors.

Over the next few hours he assists in taking care of anyone who is ill and infirm to quickly empty the sick house best he can. Once done, and only the truly in trouble patients remain, he gathers all the workers. "Forgive me for my criticism, but you all are harming far more than you are helping. Forget all that you have been taught, and embrace my teachings." He says sternly, almost nastily, then catches himself "...please. I don't mean to undermine any of your traditions or leaders, but it is far to important too save people." He exhales, and returns to his composed smile.
"Be who you want to be, not who you have been." He thinks to himself, always remembering his teaching from master Jihao.

He gathers some tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables so that he can have them all practice stitching. "Its not unlike mending a garment." He says aloud to the group as he demonstrates. "You will notice that fluids will get on you as you sew it up. When that happens, finish your task and then go wash your hands in a fresh basin. We will need water to be dumped and more received nonstop." Then he moves on to more first aid, including putting pressure on wounds and burning wounds closed. Though when he gets frustrated he becomes quickly angry and sometimes says harsh things, Milo usually reels himself back in or apologizes.

He spends the majority of his time there for as long as they have.
