Story I: The Rift

Through careful coordination, the group silently navigates the tunnel up to the next bend. Some members of the group may have been less quiet had they been by themselves, but others in the group can point out better paths down the sloping passage that are more manageable to sneak across.
OOC:
Going with the "Group Rolls" here, where if the majority of the party succeeds, everyone succeeds.
As the team rounds the next bend, your eyes work to adjust to the new lightsource. The passage ahead widens somewhat (to allow for two people to walk comfortably side-by-side). For those of you able to see far enough, it travels 55 feet and then curves right. About halfway through is a column of twisting stone, connecting from the floor to the ceiling. It disrupts the path, but there is still enough room on either side to move around it. More noticeably there is a pit not five feet from the front of your line. it stretches about seven feet from side to side leaving a narrow walkway around it, and it descends downward at a steep, almost completely (but not quite) vertical angle. Perhaps it would have been dangerous in the darkness, but it glows with a bright blue light that causes the mouth of the pit to exude a gentle glow which helps to illuminate a sizable portion of the tunnel you stand in.

With a bit more study, each of you can plainly see the chasm has blooms of bioluminescent fungi growing from a moldy substance that lines the pit. The blooms are distanced every few feet. For those that look, the pit can be viewed for a considerable depth, before the glow of the light becomes too blinding to see the bottom of it.

Pyrrah sneaks to the edge of the pit, curious as to what lies below. She looks away, temporarily blinded by the light after navigating in the relative darkness of the tunnels. "Hang on. I've got an idea. " She carefully picks up a medium sized stone and holds it over the chasm's edge. She let's it go, counting the seconds as she waits for the sound of its impact on the bottom of the pit.

Devanis crouches by the pit next to Pyrrah, listening for the sound of the falling stone. He tries to gauge if the group will have any difficulty traversing the narrow ledge to get past the pit.

The stone that Pyrrah drops passes beyond that point that the light becomes too distracting only for two or more seconds before you hear the cracking sounds of it striking stone beneath. By your best estimations, the pit descends about 100-125 feet before reaching another surface below.

The stones that circumvent the pit do not appear to be broken or loose, and should not pose significant risk to someone taking their time to maneuver around it.

"I've never seen these mushrooms before. They must've grown in the last two years, which is pretty fast. I know of glowing fungi in caves and the like, but I'm unfamiliar with this specific kind. Best not to touch or eat them. We're lucky these aren't the type that eat people!"

"Let's move on." Devanis starts to traverse the ledge before cautiously approaching the column.

Could the fungus, harvested carefully, serve as sufficient lighting instead of a torch? Ameera peers over the edge of the pit.

"If so, it might serve my eyes better." Pyrrah slowly crosses the chasm and continues to watch Ameera from the other side.

I think we can tie some to your bow Flare, or just to a torch. Hold up a minute Devanis. she says softly. Ameera pulls her dagger from the belt at her back, checks that her gloves are pulled up and lays down on the edge of the pit. She holds her breath and reaches down with her dagger to pry off a fungus, preserving as much of the hypha as possible.
OOC:
that should say "of hand to handle the dagger"

Up ahead, Devanis instinctively covers his mouth and nose with his sleeve. To him, the potential danger of contact poison or choking spores far outweigh the benefit of using these things as a light source, but it's too late: Ameera is already cutting into them. He relaxes somewhat when he recalls nothing untoward happened when a stone was dropped down the chute. Still, he keeps his mouth and nose covered and his breath held.

Well, I don't know about any of you, but I sure wouldn't like to take that fall. I'll be waiting for you on the other side while you risk your neck for some mushrooms.

Baric walks carefully across the rim of the pit, taking his time, and watching for hazards along the way. He leans up against the wall and pulls out his pipe while watching.

Ameera slides her dagger across the mushroom. The initial incision spits out a small bit of luminescent fluid onto her glove, but it does not seem harmful. She catches the rest of the bloom in her gloved palm and gets back to her feet without incident. The mushroom itself is blue, 4 inches wide on its cap and the thick stem is about an inch in diameter. From its base leaks a steady amount of this glowing fluid, which seems to glow brighter than it does within the mushroom itself.
OOC:
If the fluid is smeared on an item, it can be used as a light source, allowing for 5 foot bright, 25 foot dim light. It is, however, less obvious to others as you're coming around a corner.

Up ahead, Devanis gives Ameera a "thumbs up" signal of approval, and then reaumes his investigation of the twisted stone column.
Nov 7, 2016 7:45 am
The column itself appears natural and sturdy; twisting rock that connects floor to ceiling. It is narrow enough that people can pass it comfortably on either side. Just beyond is the next bend. With some of the party closer to the other side, it becomes plain to see that around this upcoming bend is another soft, blue glow.

Devanis moves on and peers beyond the bend.

Ameera offers the mushroom, base up, to Pyrrah with a shrug. It might work, give it a shot. Ameera leans closely to Pyrrha and whispers. I know what it's like to be down here and blind, we just have to stick together and we will all come out alive. Hopefully all the richer. she raises her voice a little Hey, let's also put some on Errans sheath, or the backs of his boots, that way you can also orient on his back as we go. Are you ok with that Erran?

"Yes, that's a rather clever idea," Erran replies, orientating himself so his back faces Ameera.
Nov 7, 2016 4:54 pm
"Might as well paint a target on your back." Devanis mutters, but keeps it to himself.
Nov 7, 2016 5:12 pm
"Thanks" Pyrrah mumbles, carefully taking the mushroom from Ameera. She looks for something to rub the mushroom on: something moderately small and easily concealed. She settles on one of her daggers and quickly coats the blade. She stows the remaining fragments of the mushroom in her bag for now. "No need, Erran. I can navigate well enough. A dagger is easily concealed. Your back is not, and might make you vulnerable. I'll be fine. I can make fire if need be, remember? People don't call me Flare for nothing. I appreciate the offer, however." That taken care of, Pyrrah will move on and follow Devanis forward.

"Of course. The strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack," Erran replies comradely.

"Come, before Devanis deems us to be dead weight," he says with a chuckle, and then proceeds to carefully navigate the chasm, moving up towards the next bend.
