You all manage to sneak up the stairs with only Merkari staying behind. Borda, who gets there first, gets a better idea of the room now that the light from Elma's lamp is shining in from nearby.

The room is quite obviously a bedroom. Multiple bunk beds are here on either side of the room. If you'd have to guess you'd say it's the servant's quarters. You can't really tell what's happening on the top bunks, but some of the lower bunks appear to have someone sleeping in them. Which would explain the snoring noise. Unfortunately, with the sheets covering them and the light being insufficient, you have no idea if it's humans in them or something else.

Before any of you can get a better look, somewhere behind you on the stairs Elma's lamp goes out. Perhaps she tried to dim it too much. Then she hits her foot on one of the steps and stumbles a bit.

In the darkness of the room beyond the snores stop abruptly.

What do you do?

Jotna glances around the room... How many snoring/sleeping creatures? And is there another door out of here besides the one back to the kitchen? Either way, though, she readies her unbreakable bar/club in preparation for one or more to awaken and become hostile.

As Elma is fiddling with the oil lamp, she accidentally puts it out. She is jittery once it turns dark and ends up stubbing her toe. She tries to clamp a hand over her mouth as she cries out in pain, but it is enough activity to stop the snoring. Her eyes widen and she shakily lowers her hand. She puts up her shield and attempts to walk backwards, back the way they came. Whatever was going to happen next, they would need illumination and to warn Merkari.

If she can, she whispers to Jotna or Borda if they are in arm's reach.

"I-if we go back the way we came, I can throw a bomb behind us..."

Jotna scrunches her face up in thought. Then she whispers back, "If you think it would kill 'em all, then maybe. Will it? Is it loud enough to draw attention from ...further afield?"

If you can think of a somewhat plausible reason for Borda to be able to use it in the dark, I have no issue with it. Based on Borda's technique and applicable skills, I might change the difficulty rating. (Also in a positive way if you can convince me that it's easier to do it in the dark somehow)

This is a fantasy world and I always try to reward creativity as a GM :D

Only thing I can think of is to back down the stairs slowly. There should be 'enough' light from the room below to navigate the stairs, just barely. Then cast the spell or relight the lamp. Suggestions?

Poking your head in along side Borda, you too notice the shapes in the beds. To you it looks like there's 3 bottom bunks filled. Perhaps some top bunks too, but that's hard to tell from where you are.

Through the poles of some of the beds on the right side, you spot a shape that stands out and could very well be a door but you can't be sure.

If you want to know more, you can roll a DR12 presence test. On a fail, you will get some misguided information.
