The Story

It took a while but you managed to make it to the Broken Leg tavern one day in the early evening. The journey was rough and scary. The villages you came across were barren or unwelcoming. By using your wits and instincts, however, you managed to make it through. You open the door and the smell of ale hits you straight in the face like a brick wall, together with a smell of sweat.

It's quite busy apparently. Two of the three tables have been pushed together and are inhabited by a rowdy crew. They seem to be having a good time.

"Come on in, no need to be shy" a man behind the bar tells you. He’s got scars across his face and he’s missing an arm. He is busy cleaning some mugs with a rag which you see him use as a handkerchief in between cleaning. Dressed in simple cloth clothes and a leather apron, he gestures to a table with some free chairs. "Have a seat, I’ll bring you a bowl of porridge."

The table you are pointed to contains some familiar faces. Not anyone you've met before, but faces you remember from your dreams.
OOC:
Please describe your character as you enter the tavern and join the others at the table.

Borda quickly steps out of the doorway, off to one side. He surveys the room, giving his eyes a second to adjust to the light. He's medium height, thin-ish. His shoulders aren't overly broad, but they're broad enough to imply Borda is habitually short a couple meals. His face sports a couple of scars and his clothes look as if the only wash they've had is the rain. He slides into one of the chairs and looks around the table. Normally unwilling to speak first, but the nagging familiarity of the faces from the dream pushes him, "Borda".
Feb 27, 2025 4:25 pm
A tall, strong woman enters the tavern not long after Borda. She wears well-worn leather armor, with a backpack on her back, a shield strapped to her left arm, and a meancing club resting on her other shoulder. She has dirty blond hair, straight and fine, but stringy from sweat and road dust, and pale skin, burned red from the sun. Her left temple features a nasty scar where no hair can grow. Instead, irridescent green scales extend from the area in small patches for an inch or two. Her hands and neck feature subtle hints of similar scaling, though not as noticeably.

She looks around the place, sniffs, and makes a sour face. Seeing some familiar faces, her brows knit in focus and intensity as she approaches the table. She sits in a chair by throwing one leg over the back of it and leans forward onto the table, resting her elbows on the edge. She gestures at the gathered people and says, "I've seen you lot. In ... in a dream. And no, that ain't a pick up line, so don't try it."
Feb 27, 2025 10:26 pm
"But he did look like a chicken..."

A sour-faced man who looks older than he is enters the tavern, grumbling to himself, but it is his unpleasant smell that announces his entrance to the room. Those closest to the door involuntarily step back as he moves further inside. His eyes immediately go to the flames in the fireplace and the first smile of the day appears on his face. He begins to walk towards it when the man behind the bar interrupts his thoughts with food.

"Have a seat, I’ll bring you a bowl of porridge."

The smelly hermit stops in place and nods his head at the man before looking over the tables for a chair. He does a double take as he sees one table that is slowly filing with people he is sure he saw in that dream. It was warm, inviting, everything this day had not been. Maybe this is what his dream was leading him to.

As Borda introduces himself, the man replies: "Keftar." He then starts to look around the room again and back to the fire when he hears the tall woman talk about a dream.

"Dreams or omens? Who dragged us out of our holes to come here? I am following this stinkin' dream to find out who put it there!"
Feb 28, 2025 4:47 pm
Wemut sits at the wooden table, her unnervingly clean appearance a stark contrast to the filthy tavern surrounding her. Her pale skin seems to glow with an unnatural luminescence, and delicate mushrooms sprout from her short, silvery hair. Her fingers—too long, too thin—caress a human skull placed prominently before her on the table. Her lips occasionally move in silent conversation with the grinning remains as she periodically pours drops of iridescent liquid from a small vial into the skull's eye socket.

A towering warrior woman, approaches the table.

"I've seen you lot. In... in a dream. And no, that ain't a pick up line, so don't try it."

Wemut tilts her head at an uncomfortable angle, pressing her ear to the skull's mouth. Her eyes widen as she listens to something no one else can hear.

"Oh my! Isn't that a shame. The prince says he finds you quite... appealing." Wemut giggles, then suddenly scowls at the skull. "Shut up! She's not even that pretty. Look at those muscles. Where's her femininity? Not like me... I'm delicate... beautiful..." She strokes her own face possessively before returning to petting the skull with renewed tenderness.

Keftar, and elderly man whose stench precedes him by several feet, also comes to the table, "Dreams or omens? Who dragged us out of our holes to come here? I am following this stinkin' dream to find out who put it there!"

Wemut's nose wrinkles as she fans the air dramatically.

"Speaking of 'stinking,' old man, I believe your dreams aren't the only foul thing at this table." She produces a small perfume bottle from her tattered sleeve and sprays it liberally in Keftar's direction. The liquid sizzles slightly where it lands on the table.

A scary looking man, approaches and introduces himself as Borda.

Wemut makes a peevish nod in his direction.

"I am Lady Wemut, Master of Herbs," She turns to the others."I also had a dream. In MY dream, you were all there too. But you served ME. Fetching ingredients, testing my newest concoctions..." Her eyes glaze over with pleasure at the memory. She points to the big woman "Your muscles were quite useful for grinding bones. And you," she points to Keftar "your stench masked the smell of the rotting things I needed." She turns to Borda and pauses, with a doubtful expression. Then shrugs. "You had your uses."

She smiles widely—too widely—as she raises her mug in a toast.

"To dreams coming true!"

Another woman enters the bar. The heavy armor she wears creaks and groans with each movement, concealing her slim body almost completely. A spiked flail hangs at her belt. Her hair is red, wild, and stringy, and her wild eyes glint in the light. Her face is twisted in a rictus grin. Some might say she has resting maniac face.

This impression isn’t helped when she bursts out into a fit of giggles. "Yes, yes, yes, the omens were true. They lead me here, and here you are! Together we will spit in the eyes of the Two-Headed Basilisks! Give them a nasty infection while we’re at it."

She sits heavily at the table and snorts. "Merkari," she says by way of introduction.

OOC:
Since everyone posted and there are no intricate conversations ongoing, I'm gonna move the story along already.
Feel free to still insert a previous question to a PC or NPC from before this next part happens, if you'd like to.
While seated, the tavern owner brings each of you a small bowl of porridge. Perhaps a year ago, this would have been a light snack. But with the world in peril as it is now, even such a portion is seen as a welcome feast by many.

As the group is recounting their dreams and sizing each other up, their attention is drawn to the entrance of the tavern as it swings open and a woman hastily steps inside and shuts the door loudly behind her. She's got long black hair and a slim figure. She's dressed in an incoherent outfit, the most prominent piece being a leather jack.

With her back pressed against the door and panting, she speaks to the group at the other tables.

"They're coming!"

A man who seems to be the leader of the bunch stands up. He's got a muscular body, a bald head and sharp nose, and is wearing a fancy looking piece of studded leather armor, though it's obvious that it's seen better days. He barks some orders and the others start to grab the seats they were sitting on and bringing them to the entrance. You hear some of them saying "Yes, Karg!" or something similar.

Then he looks over at your table. "You there! You're part of my crew now." This doesn't sound like it's up for debate and you are outnumbered 3 to 1. "Grab that table and barricade the door. And bar those windows as best you can. Quickly!"

In the distance you can faintly hear a rumbling sound as if stones are falling from a mountain. Birds squawk and scatter from nearby trees. The tavern owner ducks behind his bar and pretends not to be there.
OOC:
Those who want to can do a DR12 presence test to see if you can spot the owner after he ducks down.

In Mörk Borg you always roll a D20 + the relevant stat. Usually the target Difficult Rating(DR) is 12, but depending on the circumstances I might add or subtract from that number.
What do you do?
Feb 28, 2025 6:23 pm
"Who made you the boss?"

The rumbling is concerning though so Keftar kicks his chair to a door or window to add to the barricade and tries to grab a fiery log for good measure. He quickly looks around for the owner to see if he's going to stop him again from approaching the fire.

Wemut gasps dramatically when she hears the commotion, both hands flying to her cheeks in exaggerated alarm. When Karg barks his orders, she looks at him with undisguised disdain, then at her own pale, delicate fingers.

"These hands create the most exquisite concoctions in all of Galgenbeck. They are NOT for moving furniture," she announces to no one in particular.

As Jotna begins dragging the table, Wemut shrieks and lunges forward to snatch the prince's skull before it can tumble off.

"YOU BRUTE! Watch what you're doing!" she cradles the skull protectively against her chest, whispering soothing sounds to it. "There, there, my love. The nasty woman didn't mean to jostle you."

When Merkari begins her deranged singing, Wemut turns her attention to the cackling warrior, narrowing her eyes.

"If they ARE coming for you specifically, perhaps you could simply go outside and surrender yourself? That way the rest of us might finish our... porridge... in peace." She glances distastefully at the meager bowl, then strokes the skull's smooth crown. "The prince and I prefer our meals without the accompaniment of siege warfare."

The men keep hustling to barricade the possible entrances as Karg addresses the irritating questions.
"I've written my own name on this town in blood, so you better hurry up and do it, old man." He replies to Keftar before turning to Wemut. "Oh yeah, that sounds swell. I'll just go out and surrender shall I?" He laughs out lout. "Guys, dollface here wants us to surrender." He says while laughing. The others join in with the sneering cackles. Suddenly Merkari's noises don't sound all that strange in the laughter.
Karg

He raises one fist and his crew stops laughing abruptly. "Stop asking stupid questions and get to work!"

In the background, the sound from outside gets louder. Now that it's closer you notice it's not just stones falling, it's a more like a metallic thumping on stone.
Jotna
There are no locals here who are not part of Karg's crew it seems. However, the woman that came in last answers your question with "The military. I fear we've caused too much trouble to be ignored this time.
Hand me that broom."
She says, trying to bar a window.

Out of the corner of your eye you see the tavern owner duck down behind the counter. He disappears from sight, but you notice that the cloth 'door' that separates the tavern from what is probably the kitchen moves slightly. You're pretty sure he went that way.
What does everyone do next?
Mar 1, 2025 1:58 pm
Jotna nods a thank you to the woman who answered. She goes about helping barricade things, moving from one of her fellow dreamers to another, whispering, "the barkeep escaped through the kitchen. We might wanna follow suit once combat starts … I got no beef with the military…"
Mar 1, 2025 3:25 pm
"No reason to wait," Borda whispers. He moves quietly towards the kitchen.
Mar 1, 2025 7:20 pm
Wemut's face contorts into an expression of pure indignation as Karg refers to her as "dollface." She raises her chin haughtily while continuing to cradle the prince's skull.

"Dollface? I'll have you know this face has been compared to goddesses, you uncultured thug. My features were sculpted by moonlight and mushroom spores, not some toy maker's clumsy hands."

When Jotna whispers about the barkeep's escape route, Wemut leans closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.

"Well, well... you're not as dim-witted as you look, are you?" She tilts her head suddenly, as if listening to the skull in her arms. "What do you mean 'she doesn't look dim-witted at all'? Haven’t we talked about this already? Stop looking at her. Stop looking at other women." She glares at the skull, then strokes its cranium apologetically.

Raising her voice dramatically, she addresses Karg and his crew with an exaggerated flourish.

"Brave defenders! Take my chair for your noble barricade! I shall contribute to our collective salvation!" She kicks her chair toward them with delicate precision, ensuring it slides across the floor without requiring her to actually carry it.

She glances meaningfully toward the kitchen entrance, nodding subtly at Jotna. When Borda suggests they shouldn't wait, Wemut sidles closer to Jotna.

"The sneaky one might be right," she murmurs. "By the time the real fighting starts, this place will be surrounded tighter than a noblewoman's corset. The prince and I prefer not to be caught in crossfires. Bad for the complexion, you understand."

Jotna nods subtly to her fellow dreamers, trying not to draw the attention of the others. "As long as we can do it without them noticing."
Mar 2, 2025 3:53 am
Satisfied no one is watching, Keftar picks up a nice log with embers glowing at the end. He gives another unsettling smile at it and whispers back to Jotna: "I know a way to keep them looking the other way..."

He waves the log around a little, but his stomach full of porridge has satiated him enough to not immediately throw the log at the nice dry wood waiting to be lit.
Mar 3, 2025 12:08 pm
Merkari nods to the others and starts moving towards the kitchen as quietly as her heavy armor allows her. She sings quietly to herself: "Don't be suspicious, don't be suspicious..."
Mar 3, 2025 5:23 pm
You slowly make your way to the back of the tavern. It seems that everybody is quite preoccupied and in the noisy chaos doesn't really find it suspicious. Though they are still running next and in between you all as they grab more things from near the counter.

While on your way out of the room, you hear a voice from outside. "We know you're in there, Karg!" It says. "We've got the place surrounded and we've brought a cannoneer. So don't try anything funny. Now come out peacefully and nobody gets hurt."

Those of you who have been in the neighborhood of Galgenbeck for a while know that a cannoneer is a large golem type creature that is mostly used for siege battles. That would explain the noises you've been hearing. It's great at breaking down fortified walls and will make short work of a tavern like this.

One of Karg's men speaks up, saying "Karg, this is my uncle's tavern. Maybe we should just leave if they have a cannoneer." He promptly gets knocked out by another companion and added to the barricade pile while Karg scoffs. You can tell from his face he's not about to give up.
OOC:
Everyone give me an agility roll DR 12 to see if you can escape to the back room unnoticed.

Remember that you have omens to use, if you so wish.
They reset after resting for 6 hours and you can do the following things with them:
- Reroll a dice (any dice of any player)
- Deal max damage with 1 attack
- Reduce damage taken by D6
- Neutralize a crit or fumble (also for any player)
- Lower the DR of a test by 4
If you haven't done so yet, you need to roll your current omens based on your class. It's usually D2 or D4.
There's one rule that I add to this as the GM. You can't reroll a reroll. That means your second roll always counts.

The rules don't state anything specific for crits or fumbles outside of combat, but I still like to have something extra happen in such cases. In this case for Wemut and Merkari, if you keep the fumble roll, you will lose either 1 equipment item or 10 silver (your choice).

@Dmbrainiac I see that you haven't filled in your equipment or money yet. Please check your class to see what you start with and buy any other items you may need from the list in the book. (p.25) If you need help, let me know.

Would anyone like to use an omen?

Jotna, Borda and Keftar

Even with Keftar carrying his burning log, you manage to get away unnoticed. Karg's crew isn't attentative enough to realize there used to be more people around.

As you walk through the cloth separator into the next room, you see that this is indeed the kitchen. A pot of porridge is slowly boiling on a small fire. There are tables with all kinds of kitchen tools and ingredients, though all of them look either past their due date or very filthy. On one of the tables stands a bucket of dark-grey water. There is no back door out of the tavern here, but there is a closed door to a small room, possibly a pantry.
It doesn't smell particularly nice in here. You get the sense that something rotten has been hiding somewhere for far too long and is causing a stench.

The owner is nowhere to be seen.
Karg

Wemut and Merkari

Unfortunately, you are not so lucky and end up in the hands of Karg's gang. As you get grabbed by multiple goons, you realize you're in a bad spot.
"That's right. You heard me." Karg shouts loudly. "Two innocent hostages!"

What do you do?
Mar 4, 2025 8:20 pm

"Innocent?" asks Wemut. "My dear misguided captor, I believe there might be a substantial misunderstanding here. The bounty on my head would likely buy you a small fortress. Perhaps two."

She tilts her head curiously toward Merkari, studying the warrior with clinical detachment.

"And I sincerely doubt my fellow 'innocent' here has hands any cleaner than mine. Though mine are literally cleaner, of course." She wiggles her immaculate fingers demonstratively.

Leaning forward slightly, her voice drops to a conspiratorial whisper that somehow still carries across the room.

"You know, Princey," she murmurs to the skull on her hands, "I think our new friend Karg may have accidentally kidnapped someone more dangerous than himself. Wouldn't that be deliciously ironic?" She pauses as if listening to the skull's response before nodding seriously.

"The Prince says I shouldn't have told you that," she says to Karg. "And that I am a..." She pauses and scowls at the skull. "Oh, really? If you were so smart, you'd still be alive!" She watches Karg with an outraged expression. "Can you believe it? You'd imagine a Prince would be better mannered."

Merkari and Wemut

The people holding you loosen their grip as it's made clear that you both are not messing around. They're thinking twice about the decision to grab hold of you so quickly. You hear one say to another "You know, I thought it was suspicious that they were so easy to grab." Which only makes them even more scared.

Karg is not pleased by this, but before he can do anything about it the voice from outside calls for his attention again. (See below)
Everyone

"We're not falling for your tricks, Karg." The voice from outside responds. "For all we know, those hostages are part of your crew! If you don't surrender, we'll have to demolish the whole building just to be on the safe side."

This causes Karg to lose all interest in recapturing the hostages. He realizes it's time to get out. To his dismay once more, all exits are blocked by piles of furniture. "Remove the barricades, you idiots!" He yells at his crew while he himself starts to franticly dig his way to the door.

At the same time, you hear more movement outside and the rumbling sounds of the cannoneer which is most likely getting ready to smash something.
If you don't get out soon, it might be too late.
Borda, Jotna and Keftar

You open the door and quickly realize that was a bad idea. The stench you thought was coming from rotten food was actually seeping through this door. As the light from the cooking fire enters the small room you can see it's not a pantry after all. It's the toilet. And it's not any fancy kind. Just a hole in the floor about the size of a pig's belly.
OOC:
Anyone in the kitchen must make a presence test DR 12. If you fail, you can't help but throw up violently for 1 round. Lose 1 HP.
If you can explain why your character is used to bad smells (because of something in their past or a trait) use DR 10 instead.
Those who dare to look closer at the privy, can see the tavern owner's mug-washing cloth just hanging on the edge of the hole.

The rotten smell is nothing to the rotten smelling hermit, used to days when he didn't want to leave his cavern and the smell built up something awful. That might be what led to his chronic athlete's foot. Still, he does feel a bit queasy about what he may have just eaten.

The rumbling sounds are louder now. He pokes his head out the curtain and tries to signal their other tablemates to follow to the back. They need to either find a way out or better cover!

She strokes the skull lovingly before tucking it securely against her chest. Her eyes dart toward the kitchen where the others disappeared.

"Shall we join our fellow dreamers through the back? I find military types tend to be terribly unappreciative of my particular talents."

Without waiting for a response, she begins drifting toward the kitchen.

The sound of vomit splatter doesn't make the situation much better for most of you. As some of it is sprayed down into the 'shit hole', those with keen hearing notice that the pit appears to be quite deep and has water, or at least liquid, at the bottom of it. This is unusual since only the big cities have a sewer system.

CRUNCH
Behind you in the other room, one of the cannoneer's arms comes down on the middle of the tavern like a ton of bricks. Screams of surprise and pain hit your ears as some of Karg's crew are crushed under the weight of the tavern and the golem. Wemut catches just a glimpse of this destruction on her way to the kitchen. About a third of the tavern's interior is destroyed, separating you 5 from Karg's crew and the door.

More crunching and creaking sounds are heard as the golem raises its arm again. On the other side of the debris that used to be a part of the tavern you can hear Karg and his crew panicking. It seems you're locked up in this kitchen and probably about to get crushed.

What do you do?

The loud cracking and cries makes it very clear that running away is the better choice. He tries to keep his recent meal down as he holds his nose and wiggles down the hole, holding onto the burning log all the while. That's sure to make this whole mess smell better...

"Not the hair! Not the hair!" she cries.

As she reaches the other side, a wave of putrid stench assaults her nostrils. Her body convulses in a violent retch, but she manages to swallow back the rising bile, pressing one delicate hand against her mouth.

"By the sacred mushrooms..." She composes herself with remarkable speed, straightening her posture, as she looks at her companions. "You're lucky I spend my days inhaling the vapors of rotting nightshade and fermented toad secretions, or I'd be adding to this... magnificent bouquet."

As Keftar splashes in the liquid below, hoping this is really just water, he swings around his log to check on it.

Sadly, the activity and the descent and the liquid combined end up putting out the smoldering embers of the log. He frowns and spurts a few curses at the loss of his fiery friend and lack of light, but he will keep the log regardless. At least the smoky smell gives him some sort of comfort.

One by one you make your way through the crapper. It appears to be quite a deep hole that requires some wiggling and climbing to get all the way through. After a minute or two your feet are no longer supported and you fall the rest of the way down into a ankle-deep puddle of stinking water. The muddy wet ground, the other party members or other squishy material you're better off not thinking about, cushion your fall.
OOC:
The better your role was for the climb down, the cleaner you have managed to keep yourself.
It's dark down here, only a sliver of light falls down through the hole you came from. As your eyes adjust you can see that you're in a dead end of an underground cavern just about high enough to stand upright. There seems to be only one way to go. Seconds after, the light is extinguished when with a loud bang as the rest of the tavern is demolished above you. You are plunged into complete darkness.

Did something just move against your foot in the water?

What do you do?
Mar 8, 2025 2:11 pm
"Alive in a hole, seems to by my lot." Turning his head around from side to side, as if he can see anything. "Anyone pack for a cave, even a candle maybe?"
Mar 9, 2025 9:19 pm
"We all end up in holes eventually. Unfortunately, anything that could cause a fire was taken away from me..."

The hermit answers the voice in the darkness and hefts the smoking log onto his shoulder. He yelps a little as something moves against his foot, but perhaps it was just refuse that fell down with them?

He is used to darkness and smells so this is not really unfamiliar territory. He slowly attempts to walk towards where they saw this cavern opening towards, keeping one ear cocked and holds a hand out, feeling for fresh air or wind.
Mar 9, 2025 9:27 pm
Jotna landed on a patch of relatively dry soil, escaping the worst of the filth in this place. She gingerly stepped out from the messier area and began to fish out a torch.

"Better down here than up there. Oof, some of y’all gonna need a shower after this."
OOC:
I see now I have no tinderbox. Was that a separate item I forgot, or do torches (or my toolkit) assume one?
Mar 9, 2025 10:13 pm
OOC:
You can assume that you have a way of lighting the torches. Would be silly to carry them around without it.

Since you didn't get very filthy or wet, you can light them without issue.
Mar 10, 2025 5:11 pm
With the light from Jotna's torch, it's easier to see where you've landed. The cave stretches beyond where the torchlight can reach. No other exits are visible.
At least the smell of a latrine has been somewhat masked by the smell of smoke coming from the torch and Keftar's now extinguished log.
Mar 10, 2025 6:16 pm
"Well, no one died and we can see and this cave only has one way to go. Would you care to lead, Jotna? Having the torch and all." Borda makes sure he's all together, knife in hand and he's ready to follow Jotna.
Mar 10, 2025 9:40 pm
Jotna nods at the suggestion. Torch in one hand and shield in the other, she moves away from the hole and toward the darkness of the cave.
Mar 10, 2025 10:53 pm
Wemut delicately covers her nose and mouth with an embroidered handkerchief. She lifts her skirt just enough to avoid the filthy water, her expression a mix of disgust and haughty disdain. When Jotna remarks, "Better down here than up there. Oof, some of y’all gonna need a shower after this," Wemut’s lips curl into a sly, mocking smile.

"Darling, most of you were already in dire need of a bath *before* this little excursion. I can only imagine the state of you after. Truly, it’s a miracle I haven’t fainted from the collective stench."

As she speaks, something brushes against her ankle beneath the murky water. Her elegant composure shatters in an instant. With a piercing shriek, she leaps onto Merkari’s back, clinging to the warrior like a terrified cat. "What in the name of the Basilisk was THAT?!" she screeches, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and outrage. "If anything in this cesspool touches me again, I’ll dissolve it—and possibly all of you—into a puddle of acid!"

She looses her flail as she stalks forward behind Jotna.
Mar 11, 2025 12:26 pm
Keftar looks quite silly when revealed in Jotna's torchlight, head cocked to the side as his free hand waves wildly in front of him. He stops and blinks a couple of times before putting his hand down.

"Ah, my reliable friend, fire."

He looks at his smoking log, but decides to wait on asking for a light until later. He follows along behind the rest. Best to be downwind of people, he has learned.
Mar 11, 2025 2:01 pm
You follow the tunnel for about half a mile and reach a T-junction where the water flows one way and a dry path greets you the other way. You can see that the way the water goes, the passage gets narrower. In the outside corner of the 'river' you can see a buildup of dark brown sludge. If you want to go that way you'll have to squeeze through and possibly leave large items behind.

As you stand at the junction, considering your options you can hear voices echoing through the halls. They are faint, but seem to be coming from the dry direction.

Which way do you go?
Mar 11, 2025 6:29 pm
Jotna gestures toward the dry path and says, "Water flows downward, deeper into the earth. I wanna get out of the muck, not deeper into it. Let’s go this way." she heads that way, but moves slowly and quietly until she knows who it is that is speaking ahead.
Mar 12, 2025 2:50 am
Borda was thinking the same thing, but sometimes listening is safer. He turns to follow Jotna up and away from the river. I mean, the last time he went down to the river, well... Nope, up is better.
Mar 12, 2025 3:12 am
"Who made you the boss?"

Keftar protests half-heartedly as even he is getting tired of wading through filth. He follows along after the others, staying towards the back still.

"Well," he grumbles, "hope the voices are not from the people that knocked over that building we were just in."
Mar 13, 2025 1:58 am
Still holding onto Merkari's back, Wemut blows a strand of her red hair out of her mouth, her expression a mix of annoyance and determination.

"Fine, the Basilisk can go to the eighth hell, but don't you dare let us fall into this filthy water, crazy one."

As the idea of taking the dry path, from which voices can be heard, is proposed, Wemut nods in agreement, her eyes gleaming with a calculating look.

"The Prince and I agree, but let's send someone stealthy ahead to ensure there's no danger lurking. Let's avoid any unpleasant surprises."
Mar 13, 2025 7:13 am
"Aha! I have stones taken from Thel Emas' lost temple. They will tell us if danger lies ahead," Merkari says. She reaches into a belt pouch and draws forth a handful of rune-inscribed stones. She tosses them on the dry path and looks to see their pattern.
OOC:

OOC:
The person who is scouting ahead, please give me a DEX roll DR 12 to be stealthy. If you fail, the people up ahead will notice your presence.

You walk ahead of the group, trying your best to stay hidden and the voices get louder with every few steps until you can hear the conversation more clearly. You hear a high-pitched woman's voice say "Well you paid me to help you get out, so I'm saying this is the way to go. If you'd rather go back and take your chances down in the water, be my guest." She sounds raspy and harsh.

A man's voice grumbles and you can hear shuffling and what sounds like small rocks scattering on the ground.

With the light from Jotna's torch dimmed, you can tell that up ahead there is also a light flickering and lighting up that end of the tunnel. You creep closer until you spot the tavern owner who is trying to squeeze his way through a narrow bit of tunnel. This is mostly an issue for him because of his size.

Next to him stand a woman with long grey unkempt hair. She is tapping her foot, seemingly annoyed that it's taking the man so long to do a simple task. Yet she makes no effort to help in any way. Her figure is slender, almost gaunt, and would likely slip her way down the narrow part easily.

They both haven't noticed you behind them in the shadows. What do you do?

Keftar

You sift through the brown sludge and among the stinking squishy material you come across something hard and pointy. After you wash it in the water you are left with a dagger. Its handle and blade are completely black. No wonder it wasn't possible to spot it from a distance.

When you hold it up to the light, you can just about make out a small symbol on it. Possibly from the previous owner or the smith who made it.
OOC:
You have found a Black Kergüs Dagger. It does 2d4 damage.

OOC:
Looks like Esidrix has been busy for a few days. Anyone can take over the scouting using the existing successful roll.
After about a minute, the barkeep finally manages to squeeze through the narrow bit. "Finally..." The lady says loud enough for everyone to hear. "Stand back, I'm coming through as well."

Behind you it looks like Keftar is rummaging through the sludge. It's hard to see what exactly he's managing to find with the torchlight not fully reaching that area.

What is everyone doing?
Mar 18, 2025 12:11 pm
Borda watches them squeeze through the gap in the cavern and takes a step back towards the others. He waves to Jotna and signals them to come ahead. As they get closer, he whispers, "The barkeep hired some girl to lead him out of here. It's just the two of them for now, I think we can follow them out of here."
Mar 18, 2025 9:20 pm
Jotna nods and says, "Hired to lead him out? Maybe she worked in the kitchen, or maybe she's his wife. Or sister. Or cousin. Or... well, you get the idea." She shrugs, puts her club up on her shoulder, and adds, "Well, I guess let's go then."
Mar 19, 2025 5:05 am
"Or his whore," Wemut suggested, complementing Jotna's assumptions, and immediately blushed. She lifted the prince's skull with one hand while still clinging to Merkari's back with the other.

"That's what SHE was thinking. I don't have impure thoughts of any kind."

She turned her face with an offended expression and gave Merkari a few taps on the thighs with her ankles, as if spurring a horse.

"Giddy up, crazy warrior, let's get out of this shithole."

Keftar tests his new dagger, slicing it through the air a few times. If it smells still, it's hard to tell in this sewer. Satisfied this is much better than what he had, he puts it in his belt and follows after the others. If he cannot squeeze through the space with the log, he will leave it behind.
Mar 19, 2025 4:21 pm
You all leave the river of filth behind. As you approach the place where the others squeezed through, the sound of footsteps tells you that the duo is proceeding down the tunnel. You don't have as much issues getting through the narrow passage as the barkeep seemed to have, and manage to follow behind.

Keftar throws his log through the hole before following it and reconnecting on the other side.
OOC:

"Ah, so you're customers then?" She replies in a bit of a friendlier tone to Jotna. She steps into the light of your torch, with her own flickering next to her. Now that you see her better, you realize that she was in your dream too. Though, you're hazy on the fact of that being a good or a bad thing.

"These caverns are treacherous, but I can guide you through." She continues, getting right to business. "It's ..." she pauses to assess each of your looks "... 5 silver each."
A woman
Mar 21, 2025 4:21 pm
Keftar retrieves his log and squints at the woman, was she really a part of his dream? He decides to scowl instead of thinking further.

"I don't remember seeing you up there. How do we even know you really know the way out? We would have found this way without you."

There's a seed of doubt in the back of his mind, but he stays recalcitrant.
Mar 22, 2025 4:12 am
Jotna looks down at the scrawny woman and snorts. She replies, "What was that, toothpick? I think it's you who should pay me to keep you safe, don't you think?"

She smiles--an ugly sight, given her rotting teeth--and scratches absentmindedly at the spot where the arrow that killed her had pierced her skull.
Mar 23, 2025 5:20 pm
Borda chuckles at Jotna's offer. "No shit, we can just stand here and wait until ya leave and follow ya, or we can do what we was thinkin' and find our way out. Not that we'd risk loose ends danglin' ahind us. Now, we be here 'cause of some dream where we know each other. Borda addresses the woman directly. "Well, first of all, I live here. These tunnels are my neighborhood." The woman says. "So yeah, I know a thing or too about this place. There's things down here that will eat you for breakfast. But I'm sure you'd make a tasty snack." That last part seems to be pointed at Jotna, who made the 'toothpick' remark.

"Secondly, if you think I'll guide you out for free, you're daft." She scoffs. However, when Borda mentions a dream she's quickly distracted from her previous thoughts. "A dream? That's funny. Just a few weeks ago I had some other folks down here mentioning a dream." She scratches her head pensively. "Yeah. On their way to a mansion, they said. Went in a direction of the caves I haven't explored. Ain't seen them since."

"I'll get you to where I saw them last for 4 silver each."

Barkeep

At this point, the barkeep also speaks up. "Come on, lads. I don't want to see no bloodshed. We can all get out alive and have a pint of ale or the like." He says in a quavering and scared voice. "You looks like you could spare a few coin. 'Cept for that one." He says pointing to Keftar. "No offence." He adds.
Mar 23, 2025 7:29 pm
Jotna chuckles and nods. I like this girl, even if she is too skinny.

She says, "Respect for your hustle. OK, I'll give ya 2 silver and I promise not to hit you on the head with this heavy club here. How's that?"
Mar 24, 2025 12:46 pm
Wemut peers over Merkari's shoulder.

"I'll pay you 6 silver coins, old woman, if you get the prince and me out of here. We're not paupers, and we don’t haggle."

He looks at the woman with a hint of curiosity.

"Haven’t I seen you somewhere before? Perhaps among the servants in the Royal Palace?"
Mar 25, 2025 12:51 pm
Keftar makes a face, quite offended despite what the innkeeper says.

"Hey, just 'cuz I dress in rags doesn't mean I can't pay my own way!"

If the man could only keep his mouth shut and think more, perhaps he could have gotten away with paying less. However....

He moves forward and drops four silver into the woman's hand.

"All right, show us your stuff. I'll go where these so-called dreamers went. A mansion sounds like a better place to sleep tonight."

As he leans on the log waiting for the others to decide, dirty side down on the ground, he thinks aloud, "So what do you got that keeps the monsters away? Anything we could use? Or buy I guess as sewer survival seems to be your trade."

Elma
Jotna

The woman swallows, quite intimidated by your heavy club. "I don't know what the result would be if we went toe to toe, lady, but I'd rather not find out." She says, trying to hide her fear. "Getting hurt is a death sentence down here."
Wemut

I might have been, what's it to ya? She says.
OOC:
If you want to check to see if it's a bluff (which it definitely is) you can roll a DR10 presence check.

All

Without giving you the time to reconsider, she snatches up the offered coins and starts walking again. "This way."
While you all make your way through the tunnels, she answers Keftar's question. "I survive by staying quiet and out of sight when I need to. If you can figure out the patterns and habits of the creatures here, you'd be surprised what you can scavenge from them." She says somewhat smugly.

She leads you and the barkeep through multiple passage ways and through tunnels. Every now and then she scouts ahead to look for danger, or perhaps it's all a ruse, but you find no ill fortune on the way. During this time you find out that her name is Elma.

It takes a good 2 hours before she stops in a larger hall where you are met by a deep chasm. A single bridge, about 1ft wide, spans across to the other side and there appears to be no other way to go from here. When you peer down into the depths, you see a wrinkling mass of what can only be described as soot-black meat. It has no real shape but just like a liquid fills up the bottom of this pit.

Elma speaks up again. "We can cross this bridge." She grabs a few of the coins that you have given her and throws them down into the darkness. They make no sound as they hit the meaty substance and soon vanish from sight. "You have to pay to cross safely. With coin or any other means of sacrifice." She adds and walks to the other side, putting one foot in front of the other and arms stretched out like a tight-rope walker.

What do you do?
OOC:
To cross the bridge without sacrifice is a DR14 Agility check. With sacrifice it's DR6.
The result of a failed roll will be death. - If that happens, you can pick how you want your character to die ;)

Please mark off the coins you've spent on the guide and, if any, on the bridge crossing.

Mar 26, 2025 6:48 pm
Glad I didn't bother giving any to the guide, muses Borda. He tosses a coin of each side of the bridge for balance and heads across.

Rolls

Agility DR4 (Stealthy) - (d20+1)

(13) + 1 = 14

Grinning maniacally, Merkari hurts some coins off the bridge before striding foreward.
OOC:
Bah, using 2 Omens, one left.

(5) = 5

Omen Reroll - (d20+0)

(2) = 2

"Hey, shouldn't those coins of mine count for me too?"

Keftar waits to cross, debating whether he should send some sacrifices too. He really doesn't want to end up like the owner of this dagger he found though...

He takes out two coins like Borda and drops one on each side before crossing, using the log like a balancing pole of a tightrope walker.
OOC:
Will using an omen to neutralize the crit help or needs a reroll instead?

Rolls

Agility - (1d20-2)

(3) - 2 = 1

OOC:
@Dmbrainiac unfortunately, you can't reroll a reroll. However, luckily, you can instead use an omen to lower the DR by 4, resulting in a success of your first roll with only 1 omen.

@quilltid in this case you'll need a reroll. It's the only time in this adventure that a single fail (even without crit) results in character death.

Btw, anyone can use an omen for anyone else. Doesn't have to be your character. Just FYI ;)

Let's see what happens with the reroll!

Rolls

Agility - (1d20-2)

(15) - 2 = 13

Wemut tosses a coin carelessly and prepares to cross the bridge.

Rolls

Agility - (1d20+0)

(16) = 16

Got it, thanks. I was on my phone didn't have access to the rules when I was posting earlier. :)

No worries :)

Looks like everyone made it. Damnit ... uhm... I mean, nice! :P
Elma
While the last person is crossing the bridge, Elma says "This is where I saw the other 'dreamers' last" A hint of sarcasm is noticeable in the word 'dreamers'. She is standing on the edge of the precipice with her back to it. "They went down that tunnel." She points to the next logical place to go. "You'll find it splits into 3 up ahead, but I don't know anything else about those ways."

Then she gets a crazy look in her eyes. She reaches into her pockets and pulls out the rest of the money that she collected, tossing it down into the wrinkly mass behind her. "Oh, great gods of the deep." She says loudly. "I have paid for my passage. Now take me from this wretched world to the promised lands." At this she simply lets herself tip backwards off the edge.

The barkeep, who also made it across after sacrificing his apron, seems to be stunned by what's happening.
If anyone wants to react, you have only a split second.

What do you do?
Mar 27, 2025 5:37 pm
Shocked, Jotna tries to grab her hand while bracing herself in place, like an anchor.

OOC:
Agility seems like the correct attribute for what you attempted. Yes your roll counts. You can lower the DR is you'd like to.
Don't feel obliged to do so. This is a cruel world after all.

How do I lower the DC?

Drgwen, in case you missed it, I answered your question in the ooc/rules thread.

What are the others up to? Already moving on?

Great, I’ll spend my omen to lower the DC by 4, making the Agility roll a success
Mar 30, 2025 1:17 am
"Why'd you pay to go across if you were just going to jump in anyway?" Keftar shouts unhelpfully as Jotna reaches out for the woman. He peeks over the edge to see if the roiling mass reacts differently to this attempted sacrifice.
Mar 30, 2025 6:11 am
Keftar

You peer down and see the black mass move to meet what could be a nice snack. The meaty substance turns into a low spire as if trying to reach Elma.
But Elma is being held firmly by Jotna, who seems to have denied her sacrifice. "What are you doing?" Elma says to her, completely taken aback by this act of... Kindness? She finds it hard to believe that kindness could be anyone's motivation in this world.
OOC:
Jotna, you have the choice of pulling Elma back up (no roll needed) or letting her fall.
Unless anyone else wants to intervene ;)
Mar 30, 2025 6:34 am
Jotna pulls the woman back up and catches her. She looks her in the eye and says, "No. Don’t. Come with us instead."
Mar 30, 2025 4:05 pm
Interesting, we all have burdens enough, but she chose another one. Borda muses to himself.
Mar 30, 2025 8:54 pm
"Yeah, sure, come along. Aren’t you curious where those other dreamers went and why we all met once upon a dream, you included?"

As Keftar sees the black mass reaching out for Elma, he steps back towards the tunnel.

"Uh, Jotna, maybe you want to pick up our crazy new friend and we can talk it out more where it’s safer. Looks like that thing is wondering where its meal went."
Mar 31, 2025 12:38 am
Jotna nods in response to Keftar's wisdom and lifts the skinny woman bodily away from the ravine, setting her down a short distance away. She looks at her and says, "Yeah, it's like Keftar says. You dream the dream too, so you have a role here. Join us, at least for a time. You might find treasure, or purpose, or friendship... or a better death than that, at least."

Elma
Elma blinks "Okay." She says hesitantly. This was not something she had expected. It might take her some time to come to terms with what's happening.
You make your way down into the tunnel on this side of the bridge and, just as Elma told you, you come to a junction that splits off into 3 directions. After doing a little bit of scouting you gather the following information about the tunnels.

Tunnel 1 has a surprisingly smooth wall texture. It doesn't seem like it was naturally formed by water flow. There is no distinct smell and it goes down hill slightly.

Tunnel 2 also goes slightly downward and a few meters into it you can find mushrooms and cave moss growing along the walls. It smells damp, like a wet cellar.

Tunnel 3 has an upward trajectory and doesn't show any specific signs. It looks very similar to what you've already been traversing before. However, a somewhat unpleasant smell wafts through every now and then. It reminds you of rotting hay and moldy cloth.

Which way do you go?
OOC:
There is no wrong choice. All 3 tunnels lead to your destination, but the length of the journey and what you encounter along the way will vary based on the chosen path.

If you think you can gather more information with some kind of skill check, feel free to do so. A failed roll might give you misguided information, though.
Apr 1, 2025 12:10 pm
"Well, we's in a cave, so up is out?" Borda offers as a first vote.
Apr 1, 2025 2:40 pm
Jotna nods and says, "Makes sense. That, or the middle path, simply because it seems like a natural cave. The path up smells of decay, which ain't always good. Rotting hay might mean a nest or something..."
Apr 1, 2025 3:52 pm
Keftar takes a sniff of each of the tunnels and shrugs his shoulders.

"Up sounds logical, but we better be prepared to find some of those dreamers that didn't make it from the smell."

Elma appears hesitant as she follows at the back of the group with the barkeep. As the group debates over where to go, Keftar observes their new additions. The barkeep looks even more slovenly without his apron and the crazy woman seems rather sad now that her grand plan seems to have been for nought.

"Hey, cheer up, now you get to check out an area you haven't seen before. And you, barkeep, what's your name anyway? Where were you escaping to?"

Barkeep Turo

Barkeep Turo
"My name is Turo. I honestly don't know where I'm going." The barkeep tells you. "When I heard the threat of the cannoneer, I knew I had to get out of there as fast as possible. One time, a servant of mine fell into the shitter by accident. I never saw that boy again, but I knew it was my only chance. So I grabbed what I could and jumped. To my surprise Elma was right there. She said she knew a way out, but we've been walking for so long, I'm starting to doubt her."

Elma just looks at you and nods. She's still not saying much.

Wemut peeks out from behind Merkari.

"Let her kill herself if she wants to." she says to Jotna, referring to the strange woman. "There are too many women here and the Prince doesn't like that."

She looks at the skull with a furrowed brow.

"I say you don't like it and that's that."

She observes the three possible exit paths and points to the middle one (number 2).

"Let's go that way. It might have interesting mushrooms for my potions."
Apr 3, 2025 8:15 am
"My magic stones are drained for the day, so one path is as good as any other. Forward!" Merkari declares, striding boldly down the middle path.
Apr 5, 2025 3:43 am
Jotna shrugs and says, "Works for me. Smells better too." She follows after her.

Keftar follows the others down tunnel number two. As they continue on, he turns to Turo.

"Whose bad side did you get on that they’d tear down your place without a second thought?"

Without waiting for an answer, he taps his chin in thought.

"So what did you grab on your way out? Anything useful like a compass?"
