Jotna nods and says, "OK, who wants to go first?" She drops her damp shirt and turns toward the water. She stops before going further and says, "Hey, grab my stuff, will you?" Then she turns around, facing there water, and falls forward. The transformation from this angle is different; ridges erupt from her back and her tailbone explodes out into a green scaly tail.

Lizard Jotna turns and gestures toward the water with her head. She opens her mouth gently, waiting for someone to step forward so she can grab hold while swimming.

Jotna

The transformation to lizard form again is excruciatingly painful but a great help to your companions. If not for your kindness earlier today, Elma and Turo would probably have stayed behind and gone back to look for another way. But you seem to have earned their trust and they line up to follow you to the other side.
OOC:
The NPCs succeed automatically.
Everyone else please roll a DR12 toughness or DR8 if you're being helped by a lizard. Take D4 dmg on a fail.
Apr 11, 2025 10:11 am
Merkari raises her hand. "Oh, pick me! Pick me! I want to swim with the lizard!" she says eagerly.

Unfortunately, she learns the hard way it's a bad idea to open your mouth for a giggle while you're underwater. She reaches the far side, coughing and sputtering.

Borda realizes he was already holding Jotna's things when she spoke... He allows himself to be towed through the water.

Rolls

Toughness, DR8 - (d20)

(11) = 11

"I don't need no stinkin' help to swim!"

But as he watches the others be towed through, he looks more and more unsure of himself.

"Well, just this one time."

If anything else of Jotna's is accidentally left behind, he'll grab it before grabbing onto her ridged back and tries his best to swim. He looks more like a wet cat forced to doggy paddle.
OOC:
Oof, guess we'll use the last omen to reroll to see if it gets better.

Guess not. Good-bye Keftar!

Rolls

Toughness with assistance vs DR 8 - (1d20-1)

(2) - 1 = 1

Toughness - (1d20-1)

(7) - 1 = 6

With Jotna's assistance, most of you make it past the submerged tunnel. Merkari surfaces coughing up quite a lot of liquid, and to be honest the water doesn't look all that healthy. But she's alive at least. You light up a new torch, which takes a bit longer as it had gotten wet but you manage. The light reveals a new tunnel going upward away from the water. It also smells better here, less damp and the moss and mushrooms seem to not be as prevalent on this side.

You wait for Jotna to arrive with the last one to be taken through, Keftar. But when she emerges, Keftar is left bobbing lifelessly on the water's surface. Looks like something went wrong down in the water.

Elma and Turo gasp when they realize what has happened, but as they didn't really know Keftar they can quickly rally from the initial shock. "I don't know if we can bury anyone down here." Elma says, looking around at what's mostly rocky walls.

What do you do?
Apr 11, 2025 11:41 pm
Jotna transforms back into her human form and stands on the shore, dripping and gasping. "You lot are a lot of work to haul through the water! And I don't know what happened with that one..." She gestures at Keftar's corpse. "He must have been a smoker because he couldn't hold his breath to save his life. Oh... Ha!!"

Jotna continues to display poor manners, laughing at the recently deceased, all while standing there soaking and naked. "I don't recall what his name was, but now it's Bob! Hahaha!".

She eventually calms herself and then gets dressed.
Apr 12, 2025 8:43 pm
Elma shrugs and approaches Keftar’s body. Maybe they can just cover his body with rocks like a cairn. Probably a better burial than any of those other dreamers that came through earlier. She sighs a little in envy, but methodically checks through his pockets.

She takes his scavenged dagger, the waterskin and leftover rations, and finally his silver. More than she expected from his raggedy appearance.

She throws an unclean scroll and book on the ground with no interest. Maybe they’d be good for toilet paper later.
OOC:
Free for the taking: Eyelid Blinds the Mind (unclean scroll) d4 creatures fall asleep for one hour unless they succeed a DR14 test and A Book of Boiling Blood You may open and read from this book once a day. Your enemy must make a DR12 test to prevent this. If they fail D2 Berserker-slayers (see page 60) appear from the depths of a forgotten dimension of blood. Roll a D6. On a 1–4 these creatures fight alongside you. On a 5–6 they turn on you, attempting to kill you and destroy the book. After the battle they return to their imprisonment.
Finally, she lunges for Keftar’s mouth and pulls out his top two canines!

"To remember him." She creepily smiles and pulls out a string of teeth braided and perhaps resembling a crude necklace?
Apr 13, 2025 3:19 pm
Jotna steps back when Elma claims her mementos and grimaces at the sight of the necklace. "Whatever you need to do, I guess...

Then she turns toward the tunnel and looks down it. "I'll take that scroll if no one else wants it. Are we ready to get out of this cave?"
Apr 14, 2025 8:38 am
You cover up Keftar's body with rocks as best you can after taking whatever may be useful for your journey. Then you set up a makeshift camp to get some rest after your long day.
OOC:
If anyone wants to do anything else before the night, feel free to say.
Either way, you can reroll your powers and your omens and heal 1d6HP (unless you have no food)
The night is uneventful aside from you waking up a few times from creepy crawlies sharing your bed with you. Except for Merkari who has a rough night with strange dreams. A whirl of colors and feelings mess with your head during the night, you toss and turn. It's tough to say what you saw exactly, you remember shards of a fight, dark shapes and people screaming. When you wake up, you mostly remember one thing.

For five days and five nights mothers flesh shall be the cloak of demons.

A message from the basilisk?
OOC:
Merkari only heals 1d4HP because of the dreams.
What do you do before heading off again for the day?
Apr 14, 2025 6:25 pm
OOC:
Rest and then ready to go.

Rolls

omens - (d2)

(1) = 1

hp - (d6)

(6) = 6

Apr 14, 2025 11:25 pm
Jotna actually sleeps in lizard form, because she finds it more comfortable down here in the caves. But in the morning, she transforms back and dresses. She is willing to share some of her lard if anyone is starving.

Rolls

Omens - (1d2)

(2) = 2

Apr 14, 2025 11:32 pm
Elma shakes her head at Jotna's offer and eats one of the days rations she plundered from Keftar instead.

Rolls

Omens - (1d2)

(2) = 2

Apr 16, 2025 6:59 am
Merkari growls and giggles in her sleep, tossing and turning. She awakens with a start, sitting bolt upright and gasping. "Mother!"

She blinks and looks around, then snorts a laugh. "Just a dream. Hee hee, yes, a dream...."

Still, she looks unnerved as she prepares for the day.

You spend another couple of hours traveling through tunnels some of which turn out to be a dead end. Eventually you can see light up ahead. The tunnel you are currently in changes shape about 100 meter in. The crudely water-carved tunnel makes way for a nicely chiseled hallway with rounded corners at the top. After another 100 meters the floor becomes tiled and you spot a heavy wooden door with a torch sconce on each side.

When you get closer, you can see intricate carvings adorn the wooden gateway. Curly lines create a beautiful pattern flowing into geometric shapes. It looks almost inviting.

What do you do?
Apr 16, 2025 7:55 am
"Ah, pretty! But it could be a trap," Merkari muses. She reaches into her belt pouch for the stones taken from Thel Emas' lost temple and casts them on the floor, studying the patterns on them to determine if danger lies ahead.
OOC:
Cast the stones on the ground. Their pattern reveals if danger lurks in an adjacent room. The stones can lie. The priest tests Presence DR10 to see if they are true but after failing they cannot test again until the sun has set.

Rolls

Presence DR 10 - (1d20+2)

(10) + 2 = 12

Apr 16, 2025 7:58 am
Merkari

The stones roll favorably. A pattern that indicates safety in the next room.
Apr 16, 2025 8:01 am
"The stones say the room is safe," Merkari declares, gathering them up again. She steps forward, then hesitates. "Hmm. But they did not say the door is safe. Perhaps a proper search is in order to be sure there are no traps?"
Apr 16, 2025 11:21 pm
Jotna shrugs and says, "Stand back. I'll not be cowed by a door." She gives others a moment to step back if they like and then she examines the intricate carvings on the door. If she sees nothing suggesting it is unsafe, she tries to open it.
Apr 17, 2025 6:53 am
OOC:
You can roll a DR12 presence to check for door traps.
