Basil says:
Also in this scenario what is the roll for? Convince the horse to move? Stay on the saddle? Avoid trampling sheep?
In this case? You're rolling to 'continue at safe speed without mishap.'

Yes, at this time, Cole is bossy!

DM: I have it in my head that the wall is made of stones and waist high. It extends for a good ways both right and left. We just entered through a gate. Our opponents would have to take the gate or jump the stone wall to surround us.
if the fence isn't a good barrier as in it's too low etc, I will edit the post.

Who has the crossbow from the inn? May be worth someone readying that (that was before I joined the group so I won’t have it)

Oh-ho, okay, well if you all decide you want a scrap then I won't need the Athletics checks. There are about 20 of them though.

Happy for you to make what you will of the wall.

Twenty, not good.

The number of pursuers should have been my first question.

I'm going to delete/heavily edit the post.

I guess Athletics checks are still on?

If you think you've got a good plan to make a stand and you fancy a combat scene I'm up for it. The odds are bad, but never impossible. If you had more than one missile weapon you might be able to settle in for a siege somewhere defensible. Just remember the other PCs have practically NOTHING left in the tank. I doubt there's more than a couple of spells and abilities between them (though I try not to keep track.)

But you can afford one more collective fail before they catch up. You won't be overtaken till the third.

Gotcha.

Another character will have to decide to make a stand. Cole doesn't want to face those odds until he has to.

I’m fully tapped out I’m afraid

Same, I think I have one spell slot left maybe.

I'm just gonna go ahead and call it, we're fucked and out of options. We're running on fumes, have an overwhelming force chasing us, and our odds of outrunning these guys is too slim to bet on. The odds are just too stacked.

I guess we didn't give those guys the slip at the inn, did we?

If we got a short rest, I got some stuff back, but it would still be very risky...

EDIT: We are on a death spiral. Exhaustion is just going to make it harder...

How fast are mercenaries catching up?
Just Cole's best estimate.

By the way, what exactly is Cole? I can't pull up any character sheets other than my own
Jun 18, 2025 8:02 pm
ya, they would have to make their sheet public to see. After I get introduced ill make mine public so everyone can take a peek.

I'll make my character sheet public once the characters have time for introductions.

You know who does have all our character resoruces back? Lan and Corson. What do you think, squire, time for a valiant last stand to buy the others time to escape? Butch and Sundance vs. the Bolivian army? 8]

Two questions in that regard, GM: as per Llogan's question, does it seem we have at least five minutes (or 2.5, depending on how you interpret the rules) until they catch up so Lan could don the elven mail? And is the landscape rough enough to provide a chokepoint of trees or embankments that they couldn't simply ride around us? The map of Endier indicated hills and forests in the direction we were headed.

Thats the spirit! Don't run youll just die tired!

We could always just let ourselves get captured lol

In my mind's eye, I see a wall of dry stone, waist high, surrounding a field of winter barley. We just let ourselves into the field through a gate or maybe the horses hopped/stepped over the wall. Anyway, the wall keeps the sheep out of the field.
I see the wall providing 50% cover when standing & 75% cover kneeling behind it. To get at us, the mercenaries have to get over the wall. Maybe, they jump the wall on horseback. Maybe, they dismount then climb over the wall. Either way, the wall will break any charge and slow the mercenaries down at least a bit. We're still outnumbered 4:1.
We still have 20 riders to deal with. There are enough riders that some will get over the wall in other places. If we're going to make a stand here, I'll talk about strategy IC.

Coleburn's crossbow has been on display tired behind his saddle so that weapon isn't a mystery. Cole carries a long sword on his left hip and two daggers in a bandolier over his left shoulder (Cole is right-handed.) A dagger sticks out the top of his right boot.
DM: the other weapons are in his rooms in the city.
