How do you guys normally handle combat? Do you use battle maps or just narrative/theatre of the mind.

I prefer a map. I think too much of D&D is granular and while it's not necessarily to my taste I chose this system and I'd be foolish to spend my time fighting a choice I made. I mitigate that by using combat... I'd say rarely - would everyone else agree with that characterisation? Occasional big set pieces.

If I feel we don't need a map I'll omit it eagerly.

I think maps help for ease of play. Being able to see everyone’s relative positions and obstacles speeds things up. Leaving everything up to narrative and imagination can lead to assumptions and butt hurt.

Agreed.

Agreed, big impactful set pieces. (We also set a lot of shit on fire as distractions. Leaving the inn not burning is growth for us)
Jun 13, 2025 6:13 pm
Yeah, big impactful set pieces. None of the combat we've been through has felt forced or unnecessary, and it also always felt big and important.

Paranoid much? ;-) To quote Catch-22, "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you."

Cole is waiting for a reply from Corson's player.

The sequence may be a little off because Cole asked his question when Corson was retrieving the letter.

If Corson doesn't reply then Cole will ask the group. I'll make a post for that.

At least with the sheep milling around, the group isn't going anywhere fast! Baaaaaa!

Corson has no knowledge of any code phrases. He joined the party later, and merely is an escort for Adalric. He was not given this task, but took it upon himself. ^_^
Jun 14, 2025 12:52 am
Thanks for letting me know. I'll ask the whole group.
Jun 14, 2025 12:53 am
Yeah, I stepped in late. Corson is the only lowborne character amongst the PCs... ^_^

Lan shared the code phrase with everybody before we arrived at Halfday.
Jun 14, 2025 12:59 am
Did he? I do not remember that... If so, then Corson's response would be the closest approximation of the response as he can remember... What is the appropriate response? I will try to edit my response, or bring the information back to Lan when he hands the letter over. Something like, The man used your code phrase.

Had to check what the second half of the phrase was myself... luckily the GM reposted everything!
Quote:
His mood lightened at last when that came within sight of Half-Day, with the banner of Endier – a red spider on a gold star (or web) on a field of black. He held up a bloodstained gauntlet to bring the column to a slow walk, and glanced back. "Through many trials and tribulations, we have reached our goal. Beware, though, for Endier is a kingdom of merchants, where all things are for sale. The Prince of Rabbits and his henchmen may hunt us still. Remember the pass-phrase Biersen had us learn: 'the price of barley out of Ghoere is going to be high this season'. They will answer 'then Sarimie smiles, I favour Tuor barley for my beer in any case.'"

Everyone understands the posts are all role playing, right?

None of Cole's thoughts or remarks are against the players.

Just to be crystal...
Jun 14, 2025 1:16 am
Understood. Your unbolded italics are thoughts and bolded are speech, correct?
Jun 14, 2025 1:42 am
Italics are thoughts

Bold is dialogue

I will color the dialogue upon request. Is anyone color blind?
Jun 14, 2025 1:46 am
Not I.

The black and white Hindenburg is purely an aesthetic choice.
Jun 14, 2025 2:38 am
I'm up for reposts. Just let me know.

I based the bribe on the shepherds having a poor lifestyle. 5 gp represents nearly a month's income.

Roll for looking back INT(Investigation)

IDK about these low numbers 🙄

Cole is not going to make the horses lame. Hopefully, the mounts will last long enough to get out of sight of the mercs. If that means leading the horses, so beit.

The goal is to get far enough off the road that the mercs won't spot us.
