Game Thread: Rawlyn

Nov 13, 2016 2:20 am
From the cursed soil you arise, mist is strewn about you. You cannot remember; who you are, how did you fall, all this is lost to you. But in the distance there is a soft orange glow. Hope?

You approach the light, almost mindlessly driven to hold your hand over the coiled blade. The bonfire lights, for a fleeting moment warmth fills your cold heart, restoring your vigour and your strength. You feel rested, as though you had stayed for ten or so minuets in this moment, though it lasted only a moment. Filled with determination you look once more around you. You stand in a deep vale; filled with mist and graves. Across the clearing from you is a corpse its decayed hands clasp a dull great flask a bright white stone untouched by age. You recognise these items, powerful items indeed...

The sides of the vale are steep but there is an old path winding through the mist..
Nov 13, 2016 2:35 am
He stands to his feet, his body pausing with hesitation. Should he move from this place? He could not remember the sweet gifts it had offered to him. Restoration, safety, warmth. Something inside him stirs his feet into motion. This Vale is not his destiny. This is not where he must stop. He must move on, something draws him forward...

Rawlyn moves down the old path.
Nov 13, 2016 2:47 am
OOC:
I assume you grabbed the stuff of the corpse...
As you start along the path you realise that you aren't alone. Around you in the mists several hollowed undead lurk. They seem to pay you no heed at first, but as you continue its clear that they are following behind you. Soon you will be completely surrounded.

OOC:
I thought that was already assumed sorry.
Fear wells up within Rawlyn, but he knows what he must do. He dives forward, somersaulting, and getting to his feet. He whips around with the hollows behind him and draws his rapier.

The final hollow turns to ash, and you absorb it's soul. As you cast your eye around you, there are still hollows about but you would likely need to depart the path to attract their attention. The path winds up from here, towards the entrance to the valley where the sheer cliffs press in close to the path. For a moment you see the specter of a mounted night riding up the path, but the vision fades quickly.

When the vision of the knight appears, Rawlyn moves to draw, but relaxes when it fades. "I musn't go mad now." He whispers to himself. He walks down the path, crouching low and trying to not gather attention. If any new dangers appear on the road he wants to see them first.

You skulk up the stairs as you leave the valley. Clouds part and for a brief moment the sun shines upon you. At the entrance to the valley is a stone circle. Some of the stones still stand but most have been slowed to fall. There is a knight sitting on one of these toppled stones he hasn't notices your arrival, his attention is on a small black object in his hands.

From here you can see much of the surrounding country side. a huge stone fortress dominates the otherwise barren landscape. The circle is at the center of a cross road, with a path going forward and the other two bending backwards and out of sight.
Dec 1, 2016 5:58 am
Rawlyn relaxes once he perceives that the knight is not one of the skulking hollows that attacked him earlier. He stands up from his lowered position and moves to him. He remains cautious, but is eager to find information on this place. He didn't remember where he was or why he was here, and had to find answers.
"Hail." He says simply, standing over the man about five feet from him. "Who are you?"
Dec 1, 2016 6:58 am
The knight looks somewhat shocked by your sudden appearance but does no go for his weapon when you speak there's a your read a strange mixture of relief and disappointment. He responds, I am Gallek of Thander, and I am disappointed. I was kind of hoping you were a hollow hehe...
Dec 1, 2016 8:40 am
Rawlyn crosses his arms. "There are plenty in that direction, if they are who you are looking for. What is place?" he asks bluntly, somewhat annoyed by the man's reaction.
Dec 1, 2016 11:18 am
These lands are called Legrion, that castle is called Firekeep, this is a crossroad. Does that answer your question?
Dec 1, 2016 2:48 pm
"I suppose it's a start." Rawly says, getting exasperated. He paces around looking at the crossroads. "And I don't suppose you know where these lead?"
Dec 2, 2016 3:39 am
He indicated to a path that heads down a slop, hooking around and out of sight. That path leads to the coast, there's a small village there, well there was one. he indicates to a steep path that heads up the mound. Theres a burial mound up there somewhere, though I've never seen it. he indicates to a fourth path And that path leads to the firekeep.
Dec 3, 2016 1:25 am
"Firekeep..." Rawlyn mutters the words. He gets an odd craving, and remembers the earliest thing he can. The warmth and comfort of that fire with the strange sword-looking thing in it. "Be careful." You start down the path to Firekeep. A short walk before you there is signs of a battlefield. The path becomes nonexistent in the fields of crumbled walls, scattered paths and broken engines of war. You can see many hollows, all dressed in decayed and battered uniforms. Notable among them and your most immediate threat are three hollows which hold their post on a broken section of wall, they hold there vigil.

Rawlyn looks for a way to move around and get past them, removing his shortsword just in case. He steps carefully over debris and short wall parts that remain in their place. He breathes as quiet as he can, but his heart is beating in his chest. Being sure to stay low and let wandering hollows pass him by on their ancient patrols, he moves ever deeper into the retired warzone.

You come around the wall and find a ladder up to the wall, by the time you get up their the archers are ready to fire on you again, an arrow buries itself in your side. You then can close with one of the hollows and strike at it.

They then can return fire on you again the one you closed with drawing a short sword and shield and swinging into you, the other continuing to fire. Another arrow meets flesh, though you deflect the sword swing.

Your strike finishes of the hollow and it turns to ash as you absorb its soul. You have absorbed two Almian Legionnaires Souls.

The battle field past the broken wall now spreads out before you. Straight ahead is a all but destroyed road, that once would have lead to Firekeep but is now all but destroyed. To the left of the path, about 100 feet away is an encampment, in the center you think you spot a bonfire. Everywhere across the battlefield are hollows, many are preoccupied fighting each other assorted pieces of debris, but there is still risk. You spot several soldiers who are better equipped then the others, with lances and broadswords, and you catch glimpses of large figures in heavy steel armour.

The sound is very much stationary.
Dec 19, 2016 5:57 pm
He takes a few breaths and nods to himself. Rawlyn then heads lightly and quietly over to the bonfire, hoping to slip past whatever the sound came from. "If it is another opponent, then I would do better to get to the fire first. The beautiful flame..." The thoughts bounding in his head.
Dec 21, 2016 5:07 am
You arrive at the bonfire without any issue.
Dec 21, 2016 7:00 am
His estus is filled and he allows the revitalizing glow to engulf his body. He feels as if he is relaxing for the first time in a long time. Rawlyn does not even know how long he sits and stares at the glow. Finally, he stands up and looks around. He sees the route he came from, and he looks to see if he can find anything else of interest. Anything to announce the presence of the sounds he heard earlier or another route he had not yet noticed. He had sheathed his shortsword, and now removes his rapier, just in case.

The beating noise is still in on the air. For a second you see the image of a female figure resting at the bonfire, but it fades quickly.
Dec 23, 2016 7:40 am
The figure gives Rawlyn a thought. "With a magical land such as this, perhaps there is more to this than I thought." He looks over the things he found since arriving here. The flask he knows of, but the souls he is less sure of. The white stone he has yet to check. He looks it over in an attempt to figure out what it is, or what it does.

White Soapstone: In Legrion, the flow of time is distorted, and the White Sign Soapstone allows Undead to assist one another. Leave a summoning sign through which other undead can summon you into their world.

Fading Soul: The fading soul of a lost Undead who has gone Hollow and still. Use to gain 100xp or for trading. The soul is the source of all life, and even in undeath, or hollowing, the mind seeks souls.

Almian Legionnaire Soul: These soldiers from a distant land marched against the Firekeep at the command of those who would break the age of light. Use to gain 150xp or for trading.
Dec 27, 2016 6:15 am
With the white soapstone, Rawlyn takes a couple steps away from the bonfire and writes a symbol upon the ground. "If anyone so needs my help in this cursed land, they may have it." Afterwards, he readies himself to brave the beast he heard earlier, moving as quiet as he can.

Dec 30, 2016 12:57 pm
Rawlyn relaxes with an exhale. He stands and enters, beings sure not to move suddenly. He does not sheathe his weapon, however. "Hail." He says plainly as he makes his presence known to the smith.
Jan 1, 2017 6:58 am

Rawlyn smiles. He, too, is glad to meet someone still sane and not yet hollowed. "What can you do with this?" he says offering his rapier.
Jan 3, 2017 3:56 am
Well that depends, do you have any titanite? I'll need some titanite to enhance that. I could craft you new arms and armour if you need it.
Jan 3, 2017 9:57 pm
"Unless you are selling titanite, I dont have any." Rawlyn says with some disappointment. "What kind of weapons could you make?"
Jan 4, 2017 10:20 am
Well if I had some I certainly would have used it already. As for what can I make, a better question is what can't I make. If it can be smithed and you can dream of it I can smith it.
Jan 4, 2017 5:38 pm
"Well that certainly is impressive." Rawlyn thinks on what he may want, but looks down at his current armaments and smiles. "I think I will make do for now. So long." He heads away from the smith, being sure to make a mental note of where the smith is, should he need his services in the future. He looks around for any obvious paths to continue his journey.

The battlefield between the encampment and the outer walls of the keep is shear pandemonium. The ground is reduced to potholed mud as a the result of in determinant years of mindless fighting. The walls of the keep itself are manned by ballista but you see a vector of approach that could allow you to avoid their fire that leads to the main gates. You could forge your own path across the chaos but this will likely leave you open to attack from the wall. On the ground near the exit of the encampment is a glowing rune.
OOC:
In case you want a sense of scale, if the terrain was unhindering you could walk across it in ~half an hour.
Jan 6, 2017 5:51 am
OOC:
Sorry can I get a clarification; Were you using the trench to get cover from the fighters on the wall or picking your way across the battlefield.
Jan 6, 2017 5:58 am
OOC:
Between those two I suppose the trench. I was hoping to find a way to get to the wall itself and go along it.
Jan 6, 2017 6:05 am
OOC:
Ah, well the walls of the keep are a fare way away and the broken walls before the encampment isn't connected to the keep at all. Also did you want to ignore the runes on the ground?
Jan 6, 2017 11:30 pm
OOC:
Oh my apologies, I suppose I visualized it wrong I thought I could get atop the wall and neutralize the ballista. I will alter his intentions.
Thinking hard about the path he could take, Rawlyn elects to head down the trench. He, again, removes his shortsword electing for a shadowy approach. Though it is more cramped, it is better than risking the open fire of the artillery. He heads to the curious rune in the distance.

My stealth roll form earlier was a 12
Jan 6, 2017 11:56 pm
OOC:
Sorry I really botched this description, the rune wasn't in the distance, it was right in front of the camp you were leaving, if you want to interact with the rune you can just do it automatically.
Jan 7, 2017 3:14 am

Ah okay. No worries.

As you examine it a glowing golden image of a female knight springs from the rune, it flickers for a moment, as if it is unsure whether it truly exists.
Jan 7, 2017 3:41 am
The knight's form takes hold. She wears finely crafted armour, and carries a shield and spear.

I examine the other, note that they are not hollowed, and introduce myself, "Alara. The path ahead is dangerous."

Rawlyn takes several steps back and holds his weapon forward in alarm at first. When she materializes in earnest he is stunned, but shakes it off and quickly sheathes his weapon. "Uh... oh yes. Thank you for your warning. I am Rawlyn, an... adventurer of sorts." He says is a polite bow.
Jan 7, 2017 1:19 pm
"It is unwise to be unarmed." I turn and face away from the encampment, "I believe I can accompany you, thought for how long I do not know."
Jan 7, 2017 11:00 pm
"That is great news." Rawlyn says gaining his bearings. "Have you any knowledge of this land?" He says gesturing over the battlefield.
Jan 8, 2017 12:46 am
There is a path that will keep you safe from attack from the walls. Along that path are great foes. That is all I know... At this time.
Jan 8, 2017 8:28 pm
"Very well, lead on. And thank you." Rawlyn unsheathes his rapier and crouches slightly, preparing himself to follow Alara.
Jan 8, 2017 9:11 pm
I nod, then follow the route that leads towards the castle gate that is safe from ballista fire, "The first foe on this route is strong but slow. Try not to let it hit you."
Jan 10, 2017 3:13 am
As Alara predicted a short distance down the trench is a heavily armoured knight with a heavy mace, it hasn't noticed you yet.
Jan 10, 2017 3:34 am

With Alara's final strike the heavily armoured knight, and Rawlyn absorbs a Legrion Tortoise Knight. Ahead of you one of the Knights from outside the encampment and a knight with a heavy lance do battle 40ft down the trench.
Jan 15, 2017 4:19 am
"What a fierce adversary." Rawlyn says with a few huffs and puffs. "I think we'd do well to avoid if we can." He looks his ally up and down, "Unless that is too much a task for you. How are you with moving... quietly?"
Jan 15, 2017 1:27 pm
"I am afraid I am not very quiet. Heavy armour is not very silent. I can, however, fly, and perhaps may avoid notice by taking an unusual route." I look to the battle then back to Rawlyn, "I don't know what is beyond this conflict."
Jan 17, 2017 12:43 am
"Fly? That is incredible!" Rawlyn says with glee on his face. "I say you should fly over them and I shall move past them. If either of us fail then the other can move in to help. If we get past successfully then we are one step closer to being free of this battlefield." He suggests, using his fingers and hands to illustrate his meaning where appropriate.

Rawlyn's strike makes only sparks against the beast's metal frame. He resets his stance, grinding his teeth in frustration. It strikes across at his ally. "Alara!" OOC:
Im going to reorder your attacks; just for dramatic purposes...
Alara lands a solid blow on the knight, staggering it for a moment and giving Rawlyn the opportunity he need to impale the knight who promptly turns to ash. Rawlyn absorb the soul of the Mahjim the Gate-Warden, on the ground where the figure stood is it's chain.
OOC:
Mahjim's chain is a whip except it does 1d8 for damage.
The court yard has two additional exits; a ladder around the side of the gatehouse that leads onto the main walls, and a wide set of doors the lead through a smaller inner wall. Alara starts to become more insubstantial, she clearly won't be here for much longer.
Feb 26, 2017 5:30 am
Rawlyn is relieved at finally having bested the opponent, and his humiliation being at an end. "Well the lance did me little good, but perhaps this will fair better." He says, picking up the chain. Rawlyn looks to his companion as she starts to fade. "You must go already?" Disappointment is clear in his voice. He bows to her as she fades. "Thank you for everything Alara, you have saved my life. I pray we meet again soon."

"We will meet again, I am sure." Alara points towards the doors, "There is a bonfire through there."
Feb 27, 2017 2:24 am
Rawlyn nods, and heads in that direction. Waving his friend goodbye when she fades away. As he approaches the bonfire he takes a look at his surroundings.
Feb 27, 2017 12:04 pm
You throw the doors open and see another walled of section. This courtyard is a well kept rock garden, it's central feature, just as Alara had promised: A bonfire.

You are not alone in the rock garden, a women in a fine dress rakes the sands. From what you see of her arms she doesn't appear to be undead, but you cannot see her face, as it is obscured by a wide brim hat with a veil hanging from it. She speaks to you as you enter. Bearer of the curse, please take refuge in my garden. You must be a powerful warrior to get past the gatekeeper, what brings such a mighty soul to the Firekeep?

Other then the door you came through there are three ways out of the garden, to the left and right wide staircases that lead to raised ground on either side, suggesting that the city behind the wall is raised, and the garden sits sunken to the ground level outside. Ahead a door that leads into the keep proper.
Feb 27, 2017 6:01 pm
Rawlyn bows to the woman in a dramatic fashion, through his heavy breaths from the fight. "My name is Rawlyn, and thank you. I shall take you up on that." He sits near the bonfire and reflects on it. Its incandescence warming his body and soul.

Finally, reluctantly, he stands. He looks at the three directions for a moment then turns to the gardener. "If I may, who might you be?"
OOC:
What are the EXP counts on Legrion Tortoise Knight Soul, Mahjim the Gate-Warden soul, and Legrion Lancer Soul
Mar 1, 2017 3:37 am
OOC:
Items examination results.

Legrion Tortoise Knight. The king of the Firekeep clad his strongest warriors in heavy plate and equiped them with weapons no normal man could carry. Their lack of manuverability was the inevitable end to these iron juggernauts. Offer at a bonfire to gain 1400xp or use for trading.

Legrion Lancer Soul. The front line troops that once defended the Firekeep from all it's foes. Nimble and equipped with a powerful spear they serve the King of Fire even in death. Offer at a bonfire to gain 200xp or use for trading.

Soul of Mahjim the Gate Warden. This warrior came to Legrion on a long pilgrimage from a far off land, and swore fealty to the Fire King. He stands watch over the gates of Fire Keep and deny entry to all who would violate the sanctity of the Throne of Fire. Offer at a bonfire to gain 2200xp, use for trading or to create a powerful item.
The woman replies I am Malora, and I red to this garden and this bonfire. You still haven't answered my question, what brings such a mighty soul to the Firekeep?
Mar 1, 2017 5:41 am
Rawlyn stalls at this, but then brushes it away. "Perhaps seek riches and glory! Or perhaps it is to meet all the lovely maidens of this land." He says with a dramatic bow and a wink at her.
Mar 3, 2017 9:22 am
It is hard to gauge her response to that remark as you cannot see her face, but she speaks completely ignoring the second part of your comment. If it is glory you seek cursebearer, then you have chosen your path well. For there is no greater glory in this land then to claim the Firekeep for yourselves. Those dead beyond the gate died to either claim or defend it, and you have come further then them. But even then I doubt you can claim the keep, many cannot even open the door, and those who enter have never returned.
Mar 3, 2017 8:04 pm
Rawlyn frowns at the severity of her words. "Why is it that I risk myself so?" he ponders. After a moment he shakes the thought from his mind. "Well m'lady, I must be off. Should I claim this Firekeep, then I will be sure to return and be the very first to do so." He approaches the next door floating on the courage he mustered for his claim. Before he continues, he puts his mark upon the floor using the white stone.
Mar 5, 2017 6:14 am
The imposing door to the Firekeep is emblazoned with four insignia; the sign of the shining sun, the head of the prowling wolf, a crescent moon and a great stone. The door seems fixed solid in it's place and seems to posses powerful magics.
Mar 6, 2017 4:04 am
Rawlyn inspects the door and shakes his head. "I suppose I'll need some sort of key. These symbols could be clues..." He scratches his chin and faces the woman. "How do I get the door open?"
Mar 6, 2017 6:12 am
bearer of the curse you are not powerful enough, seek to improve yourself by claiming souls of greater strength. A powerful saints corpse lies somewhere under this city, perhaps facing him will be a good place to start.
Mar 6, 2017 6:50 am
Rawlyn nods. "I suppose that is a place to start." He stretches, "I shall return." He says, as heroically as he can. He turns and leaves. He heads to...
OOC:
Is there an obvious path that leads to this city undercroft?
Mar 6, 2017 6:55 am
OOC:
Nope, one ladder up in the room you caught the knight and two flight of stairs leading up.
Mar 6, 2017 7:35 am
Rawlyn looks at the stairs heading up. "Not the path I would guess heads underground, but I may as well give it a look." He heads up one of the flights of stairs to see what is there.
Mar 6, 2017 8:02 am
As you come up the staircase, you see the city around the Firekeep for the first time. The buildings were once grand, but now are a mere echo of their former glory. You do not have much time to enjoy it though, as you notice archers on the outer wall, and above you on the ramparts of the keep some hollows in bright armour lining you up with greatbows.
OOC:
If you wish to proceed into this part of the city, describe how you start exploring the city while avoiding bow fire and include a relevant skill check. Or you can back out and go elsewhere...
Mar 6, 2017 8:15 pm
Rawlyn retreats slightly, and at the bottom of the staircase he writes a mark with his white soapstone. "If anyone should have need of me." He thinks, "Perhaps I'll see Alara again." Then he lowers himself, and moves back up the staircase. He quickly rushes from cover to cover, and once they lose him, he stays low to be out of the great archer's sight.

You quickly use some of the houses as cover, breaking line of sight with your assailants. You travel for a little while, before seeing a way to get down into a lower part of the city, but you will need to break cover to get down there.
OOC:
If there are multiple skill roles that may apply, just pick the most relevant and roll that. Should be one dice roll per post. How do you get into the lower part of the city, stealth is nearly impossible in this case.
Mar 7, 2017 11:31 pm

Once limber, he dons his gear once more and prepares himself. "1...2...3!" He counts and sprints out, heading for the opening!

This sequence isn't really a combat scenario, think of it as a narrative intersected with a roll every now and then.
The city sandwiched between the two walls is tightly packed buildings and winding paths. Even navigating the streets will be hard, and though you would think they offer refuge from the wall bound assault, but many streets are still in line of sight.
OOC:
How are you going to navigate the space, it's tight and windy and ill suited for an outright sprint, you may also wish to use this roll to find your way...
Mar 10, 2017 5:49 am
