I would rule yes. Ice is just frozen water, as it calls out fog too in the spell.

I like that idea. I've had a couple times when I've been in the middle of writing something and real life intervened. Other times, I've been waiting on a DM ruling (no fault of any DMs; it's just the nature of the format) and other players have progressed the story, and it just didn't make sense to make everyone backtrack.

Lunitar, what are some possible destinations on the island that our characters would know about, either from prior knowledge or from maps on the ship? Also, do our characters know how big is the island roughly? Thanks!
Feb 15, 2017 10:52 pm
They would have studied the maps of the island. The islands is about two days travel to get from one side to the other. Before it was frozen, the lush land was dotted with farms and smaller holds, but the town was in the center, that is where the lord and the keep lay. Off to the north there was a small mountain range.

Even if that is the case, Baern's not exactly one to think the best.

Ulfren believes Ryyrik is heading back the way they came, or at the very least in a specific direction. What he signaled to Gunnar was exactly what Gunnar was thinking, that it's a perimeter scout.
Of course, Ulfren did not signal that to anyone inside the house nor explicitly indicate anything to Gunnar, so if there's confusion, it's 100% in-character!

CancerMan has it on the nose that the confusion is in character. Phineas is just trusting what Baern told him, and all will be cleared up when they reunite with the rest of the team. But, at that point we probably will be moving on anyway, so maybe Baern had it right all along!

Heh, sorry for slowing us down the last few days. Honestly, I expected everyone to say no when I asked to do an investigation! A good player is mindful of playing his character authentically, but is also mindful of the pacing of the story, and I kinda botched that up. I'm not saying its a big deal or anything, but just letting you know that I'm aware of this, and I'm going to push Phineas's careful nature to the background because I feel a need among everyone to move the story forward.

Sorry CouchLord, no such rule concerning large creatures automatically getting the dual welder feat exists in 5e.

No they wouldn't get the duel-weilder feat, but wouldn't size affect how much they can wield? Isn't weapon weight limitations contingent on size?

The only thing about size and weapons in the rules is that small creatures have disadvantage when using a single heavy weapon.

I have a vague recollection that we belong to the same clan, just that some of us have gone towards the outer edges in relative isolation. However, we never named the clan we came from, much less the king who sent us hunting. I honestly don't know if we ever agreed on anything regarding the clan, but it fits that we would all be kin since we were brought together for this mission.
Edit to add: I do think it's reasonable that some of us could belong to a different clan whose lord or lady is related to the clan that Ulfren belongs to, but that still sorta makes everyone kin through distant relations.

Hmm. Considering that some of us are Mountain Dwarves and some of us are Hill Dwarves, Billy is from an urban environment and Ulfren is a tribal nomad. I figured we were all from different clans.
I had a response that hinges on Ulfren's clan name, but I can alter it if none of this has been decided.

To be fair, I don't know specifically how dwarven clans work in D&D nor in this specific setting, and I'm making things up on the fly. I generally hold to the opinion that dwarves are typically insular to other races but not to kin, so mountain dwarves and hill dwarves would be treated as such by my thinking.
I also think that one can be from the same clan, but pursue completely different lifestyles. Sort of like adhering to a dwarven oath of loyalty to the clan, but free to do anything and go anywhere. I envisioned Ulfren in his youth as living on the outer tundra with a small settlement of dwarves, free to live their own lives. When the king (or whoever presides as ruler of the clan) sent out the call to war, Ulfren's oath bound him to journey back to the heart of the realm.
For those who wish to not be in the same clan, the oath to a different ruler (perhaps cousin of king or queen) might bind them to the same task as part of a sworn alliance.
Blackthaw is Ulfren's family name. The name of the clan is up for debate.

I have a couple of concerns about our game. People, including me are posting less and less, so I am guessing others have concerns too.
Lunitar, I hope you don't take any of this personally. You are a great GM and I have learned from your style and incorporated those lessons into my own game. Also, I am having a lot of fun in this game.
I know myself and others are concerned with the game's pace. In the 6.5 months of gaming, the story hasn't progressed beyond what we as players already knew from the intro post. In terms of XP, we are not going to level until the mid 2019s.
I love this setting and want to dig into it more. If anything, Lunitar, take my frustrations as a compliment to your great world building. And, please help us explore it more. Maybe we can do a time jump to the next interesting place?

I don't necessarily mind a long time between postings (although a heads-up is welcome), but when so little is done with those sporadic posts, it becomes difficult to maintain interest. Five and a half months of game play is a long time (even on play by post) to have so little to show for it.

For Ulfren, it looks like Reinhel has everything under control and in the barbarian's mind there's no need for the dwarves anymore.
With that in mind, how much of a jump are we taking to the next area? The humans didn't make that good an impression on Ulfren, especially since they were effectively dismissed once they arrived. He would need a reason to stick around, otherwise he'd opt to just go home.

Baern's heart was not in this mission wholey to begin with, and now that he is nearly certain that his love died hundreds of years ago while he was frozen in time, he has little or no motivation to be here at all, and the thing he wants to do most is return to his Circle and begin the process of emotional repair so that he can live normally again.

Hey everyone I'll be camping starting tomorrow from Monday to Friday night. Probably will be able to keep up, but if you find you're waiting on me, feel free to take my action or skip my turn entirely. Phineas would probably not wild shape for this encounter, instead using aid actions by suggesting certain tactics from the back line. He would throw some produce flames, but he'd rather have the thing taken alive if that's even possible. If a bunch more elf-things arrive, he would probably thunderwave them and wild shape.

HP gain - (1d12)
(12) = 12

Took the average HP gain to increase max hp (but left current HP as is), took the Sharpshooter feat, learned a new spell (Shield of Faith, which really should be renamed because it's funny when the caster is arcane and not divine).

Wow, nice roll CancerMan!
I'm going to take the average +5+Con hp and another +1 hp for Hill Dwarf for a total of +9 hp increase.
Attribute Score Increase: Con +1 = 16, Wis +1 = 18.
I get a new cantrip, which I will pick Frostbite based on being frozen for 1000 years. I think some of the ice magic leaked into me.
Also, I can turn into animals with swim speeds now.

I went with a +2 increase to Constitution. I figure playing into Ulfren's bear resistance and increasing his AC and HP might mean he can soak up more damage, letting the others get their strikes in.
Nov 15, 2017 2:59 pm
I also took the average: 5, +4 (con), +1 (dwarven toughness) = 10. No ASI for the multiclasser. Billy went up a level in cleric to get those 2nd level spells.

As posted in the Absences thread, I'll be traveling from 04 June 2018 through 15 June 2018. I don't know how much wifi access I'll have, so consider my participation to be limited.

Okay, opinion time everyone.

Despite many interruptions, I love how this game never dies. In PbP, I feel this is a rare thing and this game gives me hope. I have to admit, I am quite rusty in my knowledge returning from the last gap in time.
To answer your question lunitar, I like the first one best!

I like the second map. It's easier to read, as the names are highlighted white in the background to make them stand out against the darker areas.

Hey everyone I'm heading out for a 5 day camping trip and I'll be unable to post from the 13th-17th. When I get back I'll have guests visiting so I'll be a bit unpredictable in posting until September. See you soon!
Aug 22, 2018 10:02 pm
As posted in the Absences thread, since there is the possibility that some do not follow that forum:
[ +- ] Possible Absence due to hurricane
Normally I don't reveal my location online, but this is an unusual circumstance. Hurricane Lane has decided to visit, and while I ought to be safe, there's the possibility of power outages or other infrastructure damage that could affect my availability here. Uncertain when things will stabilize, so for the moment consider my participation to be limited or absent, at least through the weekend.

Maybe we can say the missing players are staying back at the village with the strange immortal people.
Dec 1, 2018 2:32 am
I have sent the call out for 2-3 more players. I am running this and 1 more, my other games ended, so will try and focus on this one more.
Dec 2, 2018 1:12 am
Hi peeps, glad to be aboard :) Will sort a character over the next day or so, what do we have in the group already?
Dec 2, 2018 11:30 am
Heya everybody, new and old, hopefully you'll bear with me as I get my bearings again. Looking forward to putting on these gruff, bigoted dwarf boots again.
Lunitar, let me know if I *NEED* to read through the posts leading up to where we are or if I can get away for a little bit. It looks like Ryyrik wasn't phased out so I'd assume he'd be in the know of what has happened since my leave, requiring me to read through it eventually. Just want to know if there's any time straints or something that requures me to do it now rather than later.

To sum up for Ryyrik:
We found a gnome prisoner, badly beaten by the drow. He couldn't tell us much, and then he got eaten by a mimic.
Billy got killed in that same mimic fight, and we left his body in repose in the storeroom because I felt this was still his home and we can always come back for him later.
We decided that Baern stayed back at that weird village with the old people. For reasons.
We haven't had a rest since many of us were eager to see what's become of our homeland, but I think after this fight we're going to need one. Ulfren's out of rages, and Phineas is probably low on spells. Gunnar's doing all right, I believe.

A good summary, CM.
I'm up for a rest, but I'm not hurting for spell slots or wildshapes at all.

Yeah, I read that Billy got chomped!
How should I play this, Lunitar? Ryyrik silenced by the state of his birthplace and kin or making "meaningless braindead npcesque" comments. Or if you had any ideas, I'd be open to hear them.

Since we had you off, I was thinking you got caught unawares from behind and captured and put in one of these cells and were just released?
Dec 6, 2018 11:58 pm
Sounds bueno. I think I might of misread one of our messages and thought I wasn't phased out. Either or, I'm good with whichever works best for you.
Dec 9, 2018 4:58 pm
Jabes has been off the forums for aost two weeks, dealing with migraines. I mention this because last time a player was up for initiative it was HypCo and I said he wasn't around but then he magically appeared! So I figure this might be some magic power I possess :)

I'll take the Ring Of Drow Blood if no one objects. I've decided I want to mix it up a little bit and not always fall back on "Gunnar takes aim, and fires."
Also, I just remembered that I've yet to select my 5th level Wondrous Invention!

The ring is a definite Gunnar fit; lots of tactical abilities added to his sniper repertoire.
The cloak AC bonus would benefit Ulfren and Ryyrik the most as they are the usually front liners; I don't think either benefit too much with the secondaries though; concealment is a word non-existence in their combat vocabulary and neither of them really have a need to teleport away; I can see it being used as a 'Oh no, squishy ranged PC in trouble, send over the brick shithouses with their clobbering sticks' button. A bit situational but I don't know...food for thought.
I think the best cloak fit would be a spellcaster/melee character, boost their AC for melee and give them a skiidaddle button when things get a bit too hairy for their lesser HP pool/lower AC. Gives good survivability, takes them to safety while still allowing them to be effective.

I'll be real. I totally forgot dwarves are short...there is a height distance. We can't cover their mouths if we can't reach it. Any other ideas before going through?

Maybe we reserve Wuknit's Invisibility spell for after we take out the guards? What do you guys think?

I do say, this wasn't the way I thought it would go. I was expecting you to be put to work in the mines and plot an escape... brings back memories of my real life group. That's why you never plan too far ahead, lol.
May 15, 2019 11:52 pm
Hey, we're putting in work in the mines ... not so much mining work, more like killing work.
Jun 26, 2019 4:05 pm
Hey folks, my Dad recently had a stroke, and I'm going to have to pull out of this game. Lunitar, I wanted to thank you for running this game. I hope you all make it. I really wanted to get Phineas to a place where he earned the respect of his team and his people, but I just don't think I'll be able to make that journey.
Here's what Phineas was carrying. You should definitely loot his body, or have him gift his belongings before he departs. Sorry to say he had no goodberries :) Take care everyone.
Walking Stick (Quarterstaff)
Shield
Silk Armor (AC = 14 + Dex, +1 strength, +2 stealth)
2 Hand Axes
Herbalism Kit
Notebook
Quill and ink
Explorer's Pack
- backpack
- bedroll
- mess kit (tin box, cup, simple cutlery, cooking pan, plate)
- rations (10)
- tinder box (small container, flint, fire steel, tinder)
- torches (10)
- waterskin
- 50 ft. hempen rope
Druidic Focus (A stone carving of a stag's head made to look like wood): https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/c8/09/9a/c8099ad18fe366fb3244f8fb84adc563.jpg
Illustrated Guide to Adventuring, volume I and III
A pair of knucklebone dice each with a skull symbol on the side that would normally show six pips.
2 supreme healing potions

Sorry to hear that. I hope he is well! It was fun having you play as well. If you want to come back let us know, we can write you back in if we are still playing.
Jun 28, 2019 5:13 pm
Best of luck to you, Len.
Wasn't trying to push the story forward either; 100% wait for the others to get theirs in. TV status: Ryyrik storms off, camera ignnores him, stays focused on Phineas.

So, I just checked absences and Hypco is gone as is Jabs. That only leaves us two players. What do you want to do? I can try and get more people, but it would really hurt the story only having one original. What are your thoughts?
Aug 21, 2019 9:03 am
Well I'm relatively new on this game so I've not really had chance to get too invested in the story as yet so I'm going to leave that call to the one original (I'm guessing that's CancerMan)
Aug 21, 2019 4:07 pm
Yeah, Jabes was out temporarily for migraines and just had to scale back on the amount of screen time.
I'm willing to keep going, even if it's with new players.

Hey Jabes, I didn't want to kick ya out or nothing, just understanding of your health issues. If you are still in then great.
Oct 6, 2019 5:22 pm
I will be on a family trip from 6 Oct through 11 Oct, and will have limited access. I should be able to check in at least once a day when back at the hotel, but my participation will be otherwise diminished.
Jul 5, 2020 7:39 pm
I am guessing we only have 2 semi active player, is it time to retire this game?
Jul 6, 2020 12:29 am
Maybe. I'd be sad to see it go, as I've had a lot of fun with these crazy characters, but it is hard to keep things going with such small numbers.
Jul 6, 2020 12:38 pm
Yeah I think most people have felt the pressure over the last few months and GP activity has definitely tailed off. I'm still lurking about but yeah can be difficult running something on here for just a couple of people and to keep the momentum going
Jul 6, 2020 1:46 pm
It's harder for me tbh - pressures of still working full time from home as well as trying to do my share of home schooling for our daughter as her school has been closed since early March (and won't be open again until September at the earliest) means that the time I would normally have to post on here has been pressed to say the least

What classes makeup does our party entail?
A sorcerer, barbarian and ranger?
I only ask because I've got two ideas and I'm okay with either one if someone wants one of the other classes.

You will be statues that have been freed coming up soon, you have been frozen in time, but you don't know how long. The last thing you remember was that you were under attack from the drow.
Nov 12, 2020 9:11 am
Hey I did not see the game invite until today. Thank you and I will get into character generation mode tonight :)

character ready for approval, still minor details to sort out like personality and such

runekyndig, you do understand people will die in this campaign correct? Not trying to get off on the wrong foot, but there will be some violence, so just checking now you are ok with some violence before we get more into it. Okay it is up to you, I was just checking because I know some people want complete nonviolent games and just was checking to make sure what your expectations were. If you chose to leave, that is up to you and your choice.Jan 5, 2021 10:58 pm
Hey guys terrible news. I have way less time to get prepared for a board exam than I thought and I am not gonna have time to check the site in the next few months. I'll see if I can reconnect after March, but I am gonna have to bow out for now. I am terribly sorry I was enjoying a group of dwarves and the setting but that's life I'm afraid. I didn't want to just ghost. God Bless!
Apr 10, 2021 2:24 pm
So, Coachthor is gone and mcneils5 has had to drop. Nikcollini hasn't posted in sometime. It looks like we are down to 2 players again.
Apr 12, 2021 3:40 pm
Now that Frigga is awake, her old bones need some movin' around! She's still in this fight.
Apr 18, 2021 6:02 pm
Since we didn't get far, I'll just drop them in as replacements, that they were the statues. I say thye, we have 1 so far.
Apr 18, 2021 7:02 pm
yeppers. That would be nice. You have seen the character now. Anything you would like to change?
Apr 26, 2021 2:31 pm
Hi all! It's late here but I should be able to get a character written up tomorrow. Looking forward to the game. :)
Apr 30, 2021 1:58 pm
For story purposes, not much happened since the players that were new were unstoned.. lol, so we can have it that you are still stretching and coming to terms with coming back. To you no time has passed and the last thing you remembered was fighting off the drow, or if you weren't fighting, the drow entering the city.
Jun 17, 2021 2:29 am
RL is been a bit much and I have dropped both my DM'ing games and several of my playing games. Unfortunately this one is on my list of being dropped. Thanx for the opportunity to play. I will keep the character here for a while so you can copy if you wish.
Jun 17, 2021 11:41 am
I believe with GeneCortess dropping and no one posting in over 2 weeks, it might be time to put this one to rest. We have tried to resurrect several times and I think it's time to turn off the life support.
Jun 17, 2021 11:42 am
I might start a new new adventure in the coming month, so if you are interested, let me know.
