Greenest: Marpenoth 22nd, 1489 DR

Feb 26, 2018 6:41 pm
For the past several days, you have been traveling a road that winds lazily across the rolling grasslands of the Greenfields. Sundown is approaching when you top a rise and see the towen of Greenest just a few short miles away. But instead of the pleasant, welcoming town you expected, you see columns of black smoke rising from burning buildings, running figures that are little more than dots at this distance and a dark, winged shape wheeling low over the keep that rises above the center of the town.

Greenest is being attacked by a Dragon!
OOC:
We are just going to say the group was headed to Greenest at the behest of a request to sure up the defenses of the town, as the surrounding areas have seen increased activity from bandits and kobolds. The town Governor requested adventurers to come and help with the situation. You are approaching the town from the West. See the map
Based on the below decide how you wish to enter the town.

The monk walked along with his group his mind deep in thought, running over the mantras and the rythmical tread of feet inducing an almost trance-like state. His meager yet adequate provisions in hand and his scithe tucked into the belt of his robes he presented an unassuming character.

He absent mindedly recognised the smell of smoke and ash as it reached his nostrils, from deep within himself his mind began to rouse. It was too early in the year for woodfires in his beloved town of Greenest. His mind recognised the danger before he laid eyes on it.

Cresting the hill he looked up, fully aware now, and took the scene in as his stomach dropped. An abysmal scene stretched out before him. His town badly ruined and his mind raced as he thought of its inhabitants. Even those that had shunned him didn't deserve this fate.

He had heard the land was troubled but had assumed it was the usual brigands on the roads cutting off supplies or goblins attacking foresters near the foothills of the mountains. If he had known the destruction wrought on the town he would have run here.

The flick of a shadow on the ground made him glance up and behold the silhouette of a dragon against the sky. He muttered a protective mantra involuntarily at the sight of it.

Lastly, and at the back of his mind, he thought of his small home and garden nestled in the hills above Greenest. He hoped it was safe and in the same moment he chastised himself for being so selfish.

"We must do something, friends," the monk said turning slowly to his companions, anxiety stetched across his face. "I must do something. Those are my people."

He turned and made ready to descend the hill towards the town.

You will need to get closer...and the way I see it you can approach at the following locations:

1. north of the topmost road,
2. on the topmost road
3. between the two roads, by the group of 3 trees
4. on the southern road
5. between the southern road and the river
6. on the north or south sides of the river bank.

Figure out how you want to approach then we will fast forward to that spot and time.

Edit: Positions based on map provided of course..but wanted to clarify
Feb 26, 2018 10:39 pm
Harold begins heading between the two roads, by the group of 3 trees.
Feb 26, 2018 11:04 pm
The Dragonborn watches the half-elf he knows to be called Harold rush off. Bartholomew is an imposing chainmailed Dragonborn with golden scales, but a man of few words, mostly. He tries to use those few words to good effect.

"Sah!! We should stick together. Dragons are mighty, mighty creatures!" **I should know** he muses silently with a sigh.

He signals to his group to follow him towards Greenest.
Feb 28, 2018 2:55 am
A young man approaches the edge of town, and notices the group of folk gathering to aid in defense of Greenest. His eyes immediately focus on the Dragon. My arrow shall find its way to your heart, reptile he unslings his longbow from his back in a swift motion, and runs to meet up with the half-elf sporting a bow as well.
Feb 28, 2018 12:12 pm
The monk hesitates a moment, torn between rushing headlong to help the people of the town and sticking with his companions to be more effective. He took a moment to settle himself, to still his mind, and with a deep sigh nodded his agreement to the dragonborn.

"Then let us go," Varl said, steeling himself.

Varl fell in to step with the Dragonborn, pulling his scithe from his belt and clenching his other fist.
Feb 28, 2018 2:57 pm
Without warning, as you enter the town five humans dash out from between two buildings on your right. A limping man and three young children race across the street into the open field, and a woman carrying a round shield and a broken spear turns and faces back in the direction from which they came. Eight reptilian humanoids about 2.5 feet tall stream out of the alley on the family’s heels
and fan out around the woman, who looks determined to delay the creatures for as long as possible.

Thorndyke cowers behind a small rise,

A dragon! An actual bloody dragon! he thinks in terrified astonishment.

Since he gained these strange powers he has learned that he doesn't always need to run from a fight, but even with his newly-inflated ego he realises that this particular fight is too much. But then he sees a group of foolhardy folk rushing towards the beast with weapons drawn!

They're going to get themselves killed!

Before he has time to think any further he is up out of his hiding place and running towards them.

"STOP!" he bellows, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? THAT'S A BLOODY DRAGON"

Varl watches as the helpless citizens of the town rush in vain attempts at safety from the foul kobold creatures in pursuit.

The sight of the mob of enemies baying for blood through wicked lizard grins contrasted against the terror amd pleading in the eyes of their human prey enraged the monk. Yet rather than let the rage overcome him, he channeled it expertly into ki and steadied himself.

Quickly summing up the situation he decided his priority was the children. Sprinting to them, his elvish legs carrying him a full 35 feet, he positioned himself between them and the kobold mob.

Taking up a ready stance as he glared steely eyed at each kobold in turn he called over his shoulder to their quarry.

"Run for the hills."

Varl pulls a dart from the bandolier of darts cossing his right shoulder to left hip with his spare hand not carrying his sickle and throws it, channeling his rage, at the nearest kobokd (K6).

Harold comes forward targeting K3 and taking him out with a miraculous shot. He then continues to push forward in a singular fluid motion of dropping the bow and unsheathing two light weapons. Harold takes a swing at K2, who manages to duck the assault, then skewers him with his off hand attack. "They’re not stopping! Why are they not stopping?"

But as he says it he knows the answer. The people. They are running towards Thorndyke now, tears running down faces, blood dripping from fresh cuts. Their eyes are wide and desperate.

What kind of monster would do that? he thinks, then suddenly reframed it, What kind of monster wouldn’t help them?

He reaches into his pocket and feels the strange crystal, pulsing with his own heartbeat. He can feel the energy just waiting to be unleashed.

"Well, okay then. I guess we’re doing this."

He moves off to the side to get line-of-sight in one of the kobolds and then he raises his hand, slowly, a look of trepidation on his face...

A burst of brilliant purple energy streaks from his hand.

He glanced down at her to look for any visual signs of life amd then refocused his attention on the two kobolds.

Swinging his sickle in a wide flourishing arc that evidenced years of martial arts practice with the weapon Varl attacked the kobold on the left (k8).

As he completed his swing he doubled his efforts, focusing on his ki, and scissor kicked the other kobold (k5).

Varl took a moment to ensure all kobolds were no longer a threat and there were no other immediate dangers. He then took a moment to steady himself, to achieve balance once again.

Kneeling beside a fallen kobold, he wiped his sickle clean almost ceremoniously and then returned it to his belt.

The monk then knelt beside the fallen woman and examined her wounds while the dragonborn set about his spells.

"Her bleeding must first be stopped," the monk said to the old man. "Let my friend try his magic. I too will tend tp her wounds here. We need to stabilise her and then we shall find shelter. Once there I will tend to her wounds. How do you and the children fair?"

Whilst Varl asked the question he set to work tending to the dying woman. He admired the dragonborn's willingness to help the woman and was glad he had a companion of such goodwill. The monk didn't approve of the use of magic although when it was use for pure good he would tolerate it.

Actaeon pockets the copper, and his arrows, and then turns to the commoners, These aren't much, but you should arm yourselves with what you can! Quickly now, let's make for the keep! he notches an arrow in his bow, and readies to fire as soon as he sees an enemy. As soon as everyone picks a direction, he will help take point so he can fire if needed.

Taking "Ready" action to immediately fire an arrow as soon as an enemy is within range.

OOC:
You are doing a great job DM.
Bartholomew is urging the group to follow him towards the keep, but in particular wants to hang close to the family to ensure he can protect them. He sees Harold take a path between the houses instead of the road. That could be a good idea.

"Troops, follow Harold. Stay close. Keep your eyes peeled. Move!" He notices the family, particularly the children, are struggling to maintain the pace. He smiles reassuring but just manages to expose a series of fangs. He tries to calm them. In a surprisingly gentle gesture he says to the children, "You are safe, little ones. I will make sure no harm becomes you. Keep moving, show me the way to the keep."

Finding himself hustled along with the others, Thorndyke can’t help but wonder how he got into this mess.

"Why did Leosin have to choose now to come here?" he mutters.

But he has to admit, hiding behind the thick walls of a keep does seem more appealing than just having a thicket between himself and fiery painful death.

He watches the others with a mixture of incredulity and admiration as they seem to show no fear at all. He goes to say something to Batholomew, but seeing the towering Dragonborn so close makes him change his mind, so instead he turns to Harold,

"You are aware there's a dragon, right?"
Mar 3, 2018 1:41 pm
Varl, recognising the need for urgency as the group began to move on, quickly looked for his dart in the neck if the kobold it downed.

He suddenly realised his companions intended to move to the keep with the family. He railed against the decision.

"Friends," he said, feet planted firmly amongst the slain kobold. "We must be rational in this time. We must find safety for this family. We do not know what awaits us ahead and we cannot rush head long into that uncertainty with a critically injured woman and her two children no matter how well you arm them. Let us find them safe harbour before we rejoin battle. We can then clear a path street by street to the safety of the keep once its safety is guaranteed. What say you?"

As Varl finishes talking and the majority of you, including the Swift gmfamily have begun moving in the direction of the Keep. You notice that the Dragon has started making closer and closer fly bys until it lands just to the west of the group right next to Thorven, the dwarves cleric. You can now see that this huge beast is an adult blue dragon. It reaches down with its mouth and grabs the dwarf. Before it moves to fly away it looks at you all with a frightening look with the dwarf clutches in its jaws screaming.

Frightful Presence

Everyone make a wisdom saving throw Dc17 if you fail then you become frightened. You each may take an attack on the dragon if you wish before it flys away with Thorven (Skeeze Bowed out of the game due to personal obligations). If you are frightened then do it with disadvantage.

Having already notched his arrow, and prepared for a shot, he immediately aims at the dragons eyes, and fires. Edit: He feels the dragons presence attempt to mess with his will, but he holds it off, and instead notches another arrow, and fires it at the other dragons eye, screaming in draconic, Remember me serpent! For I am the last man you shall see!

Using reaction to fire arrow immediately after seeing the dragon. Using action after making the save to fire a 2nd shot-
both shots are aimed at the eyes.

Varl shoke his head, jaw clenched as the dwarf is devoured by the blue dragon.

The unfolding events meant a long palaver on the topic of strategy was no longer in question. The only action logical for pursuit was fleeing.

"We must flee, brothers,"
he shouted over the roaring, grumbling and crunching of the dragon. "Lets try and lose this beast in the town. Move close to the keep but we must understand what is going on inside it before we enter. Move now, while it is...distracted."

The monk dragged his eyes from the chewed form of the dwarf who lived only moments ago.

Steeling his resolve he scooped a child into his arms and ran to the near, est buildings to the east looking back over his shoulder intermittently to check on the blue dragon. As he found cover and waited for the group to catch up, the monk used the Mark of the Wild ability of his kin to hide from the Blue Dragon, child tucked against his monk's robes to stifle its cries.

Nobody needs to tell Throndyke twice that it's time to flee, so he is hot on the heels of Varl.

"Did... did you see that?! It just ate him! Armor and all!"
Mar 4, 2018 3:19 pm
The Blue dragon, apparently satisfied with its snack, flaps its wings and takes off. You kind of get the impression it didn’t actually want to fight you, it just want to eat something and once again took to the skies resuming its, now that you’ve observed it up close, almost lazy pattern of flight around the skies over the town.
OOC:
Those of you that failed the saving throw became frightened of the dragon but that fear wears off about a minute later.

Also, it is just after 9pm and the sun is down. The only light is from the moon and the odd fire that seems to have been set by the towns invaders. Everyone will have disadvantage on perception checks and passive perception will be at a -5 for all (including npc’s)

Varl looked the Aasimar up and down noting that the height of the creature alone was astonishing.

"All of you should come with us," the monk said speaking past the Aasimar, addressing all in the house. "We don't know what the road is like between here and the keep but that Blue Dragon could be back any moment. We should resist hunting it down for now. Let us ensure the safety of as many of Greenest as possible. Arm yourselves with what ever you can and make ready. Do we have any medicines, bandages or herbs here that we can bring with us?"

In a flash Harold rushes forward, weaving through the geoup before anyone can blink. He pulls his two blades out simultaneously and beheads K1 in a single motion using both swords in unison.

Varl, but a split second behind Harold vaults over in front of K2. Using his sickle, he lodges the blade in the body of the small creature, which probably would have been plenty enough to kill it. Not done however, holding the weight of the kobold steady with his sickle he drives his fist into its face, dislodging the weapon.

The townsfolk are all frozen with fear and impressed by the quickness in which two of the attackers were dispatched. They all take the dodge action.

"Wait, wait, wait... you're just going to go running in swinging swords?" he hisses, "We don't even know what's at the other side of this building! Those guys could be just the nose of the dragon!"

As soon as the metaphor is out he remembers there is an actual dragon flying around overhead and doesn't quite manage to stop himself from ducking.

"Look, how about this," he says in a conciliatory tone, "I'll make a distraction and then everybody makes a run for the keep. If any of you really can't control your deathwish you can be rear-guard. How does that sound?"
OOC:
Thorndyke is planning to go to the north-western corner of the building and cast a minor illusion of himself walking round the south-western corner so that the group of enemies chases it west.

Speaking as a soldier, Sah, leaving the enemy alive only means more enemies.
Mar 12, 2018 4:28 pm
Thorndyke grins,

"But getting all of your allies killed means nobody left to kill enemies."
Mar 12, 2018 4:36 pm
Thorndyke’s response makes no sense to the Paladin. Is he trying to outsmart him or something. He knows he’s not super-smart, but he’s not stupid either, and he knows a thing or two about combat. Sneaking around really is not in his nature, and certainly he totally disagrees with Thorndyke on this one. He’ll try to be diplomatic as the little man means well. Sah, in my experience distractions sometimes don’t work out well, and when they go wrong they go very wrong. Dead kobolds can not harm us. Alive ones raising an alarm can, Sah. He allows himself a moment to look smug at his surprisingly eloquent explanation.

Fist gripping his crystal so hard he can feel the corners biting into his palm, Thorndyke ushers the families on to the east, moving slowly along with them as they go.

"Don’t look back!" he yells, wishing he could follow his own advice. Instead he plants himself near Harold and summons up the Arcane energies from deep in the crystal. As his consciousness intertwined with the energies he sees a way to cause one of his enemies to falter. He points at the nearest enemy and his lips move of their own volition. Two things happen; first the Arcane energies twist around his target forming a link between the two, and immediately after another bolt of energy leaps along the link.

The way I run Iniative is in groups...of your "group" is up then anyone within that group can post in a first come first serve basis. I find it moves combat along a little faster as people don’t have to wait as much. So for this "surprise" round the entire party is up so anyone in the "party" which is all you guys can place your round 1 actions in any order despite Iniative rolls. After this round I will post periodically which "groups" are up and who needs to post. If you are named then you don’t have to wait for another person just go ahead and post. I hope that is clear enough.

**Varl is up**
Mar 14, 2018 3:01 am
Varl runs to the bushes on the corner of the building where he attempts to hide himself from view using his Mark of the Wild ability.

Through the bushes Varl spots the remaining kobolds as he draws a dart from his bandolier.

Taking careful aim, the monk heaves the dart at the closest kobold (K1).
OOC:
This movement should put me in the bushes directly in front of A on the map. I realise the distance of the ranged attack is beyond the 20 metres optimal range of my darts so have rolled disadvantaged.

Hopefully with mark of the Wild any attack on me as a hidden target comes at a disadvatnage to the attacker right? Haha if not, I am hanging out in the bushes just for the fun of it - mysterious monk behaviour.

Rolls

Dart Ranged attack to K1 (2nd roll) - (1d20+6)

(2) + 4 = 6

Mar 14, 2018 10:06 am
OOC:
Hide is a regular action unless otherwise specified and mark of the wild just allows you to take that action with fewer constraints. Also you would need to roll stealth in order to hide but that would negate your attack. The upside to your current position is you should recieve half cover from the bushes in your current spot.
Carl’s darts are unable to find their mark.

The townspeople, children in tow, all dash across to the east trying desperately to get to the keep, to safety.

The pack of kobolds, seeing their human "leaders" taken down in the blink of an eye retaliate.

K1 charges forward sword in hand and attacks Oraten. ...

K2 moves up, pulls out his sling and launches a bullet at Oraten (pack tactics gives him advantage on the attack)

K3 dashes forward and gets right up in Harold’s face.

K4 dashes forward wielding his scimitar to greet Bartholomew

K5 steps forward some and readies his sling. Targeting Harold...(dis for distance but pack tactics gives ad so it neutralizes)

Rolls

K1 attacks Oraten - Dagger, piercing - (1d20+4, 1d4+2)

1d20+4 : (17) + 4 = 21

1d4+2 : (1) + 2 = 3

1D20+4 : (12) + 4 = 16

K3 attacks Harold - Sling, bludgeoning - (1d20+4, 1d4+2)

1d20+4 : (1) + 4 = 5

1d4+2 : (3) + 2 = 5

Mar 14, 2018 10:10 am
K1’s dagger misses on the initial stab but as K1 pulls backs he clips Oraten on the arm drawing first blood for the kobolds. K2’s sling flies overhead landing harmlessly in the grass behind Oraten. K5’s sling shot misses wide right against Harold.

The large group continues their trek through the town, attempting to avoid discovery from additional invaders. The dragon can still be spotted lazily circling the town high in the sky. A storm is slowly approaching from the north.

With the keep finally within sight you reach the last building before an open field between there and the keep stretches for about 100 feet. The five kobolds move forward and pull out slings to fire billets at Oraten (1/2 cover) Harold (1/2 cover) and Actaeon (will be a disadvantage attack because it’s out of slings normal range)

The winged kobold and the remaining cultist move up towards the fighting and take the dodge action.

moving through a square someone resides in is considered rough terrain for allies and impossible for enemies. Unfortunately It would take 35 feet of movement to get to the green kobold. Your options are to retcon your move or be 5 feet away.

"Okay," Thorndyke mutters under his breath as he moves follows Harold, "next time I’m doing that illusion thing for sure."

He glances back at the families and offers a reassuring smile, one that he certainly doesn’t really feel,

"Just stay put. These guys know what they’re doing, it’ll be okay."

Trying not to roll his eyes at his own statement he turns back to the fray and lifts his hand, once again releasing a burst of energy at the nearest enemy.

I’ve got to admit, though... this is kinda fun.

Varl recognised the situation they were in as one that could spiral out of control of they couldn't contain the forces to the south and east of their position.

"Create a chokehold between those buildings to the south," he yelled to the party. "Those not fighting, get inside that building to the west. Don't come out until we give the all clear."

Varl moved to the south east to take up position next to Bartholomew. Nodding at the dragonborn as he arrived at his side he swung his sickle at the closest kobold and followed it with a vicious headbutt.

Varl attacks green kobold with sickle and unarmoured attack

Rolls

Sickle attack - (1d20+6)

(7) + 6 = 13

Sickle damage - (1d4+4)

The enemies are now fighting a battle on two sides as Actaeon takes out one kobold with his ranged attack and Varl pops out from behind the building to eliminate another with his swift melee blows.

The group of townspeople listen to Varl and run to the building. Luckily it is unlocked and they are all able to get inside.

Now that the battle is over, You gather the townsfolk and make a dash for thebkeep.

You are the last through the gates as they are shut and barred by the guards. Everyone takes a second to catch there breath. Cuth and Linan hugging their children.

Linan looks over I don't know how we can thank you all. You saved our lives, our children’s lives. How can we repay you?

One of the guards chimes in as well Aye, that was a fine bit of fighting you did out there. Glad you lot are on our side.

One of the Elderly men step over to you and smiles Your actions have given my brother and I at least one more day on this planet. You have our thanks. In the heat of the battle you didnt notice but the two elderly men are actually twins and appear dressed in what looks to be priestly robes. I don’t know that we were properly introduced during the craziness out there but My name is Bertram and my brother is Oliver. With that he pulls an amulet from under his robes and extends his hands. You each glow slightly with divine energy for a moment then it fades. Bertram smiles and says. Again, thank you. "It was our honor, Sah." The dragonborn paladin bows slightly. "My name is Bartholomew... pleased to be at your service. But what exactly is happening here, Sah?"
Mar 30, 2018 11:57 am
Oliver shakes his head, I don't know the reason for the attack. It started just a couple hours ago. First the dragon came followed by the hoard of raiders, just before sunset. I don't really have any more information than that though. As soon as we realized we were under attack we started making our way to the keep as it is basically the only defensible building in the town. We should be able to hold up to a short siege...even from that dragon...I hope.
Mar 30, 2018 12:09 pm
"Who is in charge here? Perhaps your leaders will know more?"
Mar 30, 2018 1:02 pm
Actaeon replies to the elder priests, No need- the people here require your assistance more than we do. You've helped us enough,
and I am most grateful.
he turns to the guard, Though, I could use some more arrows, as I have spent quite a few getting here. For optimal aid, a resupply would be most appreciated, for Harold and I both especially.
Mar 30, 2018 2:21 pm
One of that guards that barred the gate overhears Bartholomew, "That would be Governor Nighthill, he is up on top of the parapet."
The guard points to the keep tower and you can see the shapes of people up on top.

The same guard looks to Actaeon, I'm sure there are a few to spare, if you go with your friend here to see the Governor I'm sure you will find a redhaird Dwarf with him, that'd be Escobert the Red. He is master of the Keep and in charge of its defense.
Apr 2, 2018 2:45 am
"Thank you, soldier." Bartholomew follows the directions and heads to the steps to see Nighthill.
Apr 2, 2018 8:31 pm
OOC:
is everyone going?
You continue up the tower until you reach the parapet. Passing a few guards here and there at posts within the tower itself. Upon stepping out onto the parapet you get a nice view of the town in the intermittent moonlight. Or at least what would be a nice view if it were not for the Dragon off in the distance, a menacing storm, as well as various plumes of smoke rising from about the town signifying fires that have been set. You notice groups of raiders milling about outside the keep as well as many off in the distance. On the parapet itself there are roughly 20 guards posted about the walls at the ready with bow and arrows. You very quickly spot the bright red hair of Castellan Escobert, knotted and tangled. You see on his left hand an enormous ring and on his hip a set of brass keys. Speaking with Castellan is an older human man. The right side of his face and head are bandaged and his right arm hangs in a sling. You notice that the blue tunic he wears is stained, presumably with his own blood.
Apr 3, 2018 2:09 am
Actaeon tags along and is the first to greet Castellan, Hail friend! My name is Actaeon, and we come as trained fighters from various backgrounds to aid in repelling the attack. May I request ammunition, and information so we can go back out and take back the city?
Apr 3, 2018 3:10 am
Bartholomew adds, "Please can you grant us an audience with your leader known as Nighthill?"
Apr 3, 2018 2:49 pm
The older man looks at the approaching group. After a moment he addresses the Dragonbor,. "I heard what you did to help some of my people, you have my thanks. My name is Tarbaw Nighthill and I am the Governor of Greenest. If you are earnest in your proclamation then we would absolutely accept your offer of help. I will offer whatever we can to assist you as well. The raiders have isolated the keep from by the town now by surrounding us with various groups acting as guards. They have not however shown any indication of trying to form an attack. I don’t think they intend to attack the keep, from what we can tell they seem only interested in looting the town. We, I feel are safe, for now anyway. The real danger is to the town itself and all those who could not reach the keep before it was cut off. " Nighthill stops talking and looks over to Escobert who nods to him.
Apr 3, 2018 2:50 pm
"We are going to have to find a way to help those people and try to get as much information as we can about the raiders. Castellan and I have been discussing options on how we would make that happen. The next step is finding a group of people capable enough and brave enough to go back out into the fray." He looks at you expectantly.
Apr 3, 2018 3:15 pm
Actaeon place his right fist on his chest, and does a slight bow, Mr. Governor; Master Castellan- you can count on us to make safe the city. Have you formulated a plan as of yet, sirs?

Bartholomew stand to attention and salutes. "What are your orders, Sah?" He is oblivious as to how awkward that might appear.
Apr 3, 2018 4:07 pm
Or a means of sneaking in and out of the keep without being noticed? Also, we can use some sleep, and some improved equipment, if you can spare it. Perhaps a studded leather armor and some arrows?
Apr 4, 2018 1:07 pm
We could also use a few potions if you could spare them. And I'd like to visit the temple to pray.
Apr 4, 2018 8:20 pm
"If you are as willing to help us as you say you are then we will do what we can to help you. Unfortunately we do not have any spare armor or potions at the moment, at least not that I am aware. Though we will keep an eye out for such."

Nighthill walks to the edge of the parapet and looks out. "I’d give anything to know what we’re up against and why. For that we are going to need prisoners. A commander, even a low ranking one would be best." He looks again over to Escobert the Red.
Apr 4, 2018 8:21 pm
The dwarf takes his cue. "Leaving the keep through the front gate is out of the question. Too many are watching it and you would be attacked and overwhelmed as soon as you move away from the entrance. The easiest way out would be to repel down the back wall when the moon is covered by clouds. However, that will not allow for as easy a return trip. Especially if you are able to find and rescue any of the townspeople. For that we will need you to go through the old tunnel. The main purpose of the tunnel was to provide a secret means of collecting water from the stream during a siege. Since the keep had never been besieged before the tunnel has never been used. The gate is blocked and the locked and may be rusted to the point it can no longer be opened. But we must try. It is the best way to get people into the keep and safe."

Escobert removes a key from his key ring and extends his hand for someone to take it. "This should unlock the gate if it’s not in too bad a shape. Follow me now and I will lead you to the passage way."

"Before you go, take a look.". The Governor points out to a group of about a dozen cultist guards surrounding a purple robed human female. "That bitch there I think is the one leading the raid. I’d steer clear of her if I were you. She looks quite formidable. And anytime she has been spotted she is with a large force protecting her."

You follow Escobert the Red and he takes you down into the cellar of the keep and stops in front of a gate blocking the way into a narrow tunnel. The gate is covered by some boxes. After a few minutes of moving boxes Castellan pulls one of the keys of his hip and puts it into the gate lock. The lock is stiff but it turns and with that the gate opens. He then turns to the group offering up the key.

The tunnel should run about 100 feet and end at the stream. The other end was made to look like a sewer outlet and is also locked. The key should unlock it, but be mindful as the lock has not been exercised in many years. I will leave guards posted here to send word if you are successful. Do your best to remain unseen as we don't want the raiders gaining this access to the keep. I wish you the best.
Apr 10, 2018 7:41 pm
I ready my mace. Shall we?

The disused tunnel is filled with cobwebs but is otherwise clear. As you make your way through you begin to see the faint moonlight beginning to shine dimly through the exit gate. After about another 30 feet, you notice two swarms of rats blocking the path near the exit. They don’t seem to notice you.

Looking behind you to check on your comrades, you notice that Thorndyke and Varl are nowhere to be found.

Then I figure an half hour to cover it in mud, then the rest of the night and the better part of tomorrow morning for it to dry. Ooooor, we can move down the river bed towards those buildings and pray one is empty. Then we can spend the rest of the night moving towards the keep. If you want to study that creature of death, that would be the best place to do it from and give yourself a better chance of survival in the process." Moving towards the riverbed, Damien slides down the embankment and searches the dirt and mud for any prints left by anyone.

Looking back over his shoulder he whispers to his cousin, ""Hey cous, we have to be as quiet as possible. Do your best to step where I step. And be ready for anything." Not seeing any footprints, Damien draws forth his rapier and shortsword.

Actaeon’s blades come out as he moves towards the green kobold. The swing of his first blade misses but his follow up with the off hand does manage to find purchase. It is not a deep strike but the creature seems to be holding on for dear life. The kobold reacts by dropping his sling and drawing a dagger, stabbing at Actaeon, he is parried easily.

The red kobold does the same, dropping his ranged weapon for close combat with the dagger. He takes a stab at Oraten who simply places his shield in front of the tiny blade.

The remaining cultist acts in desperation, realizing the grim situation he is in, he screams and slashes with his weapon at Bartholomew who knocks the Attack away.

While covering the 30' or so, Damien keeps an eye on the other group, ready to spring into action if the need arises.
Apr 27, 2018 7:43 pm
Actaeon sheathes his swords, and takes off the mask, If only you waited just a bit longer, I would've been able to gather intel about the attack. he proclaims. At least we still won.
Apr 27, 2018 8:43 pm
Harold sheaths his weapons and pulls his bow out again. He walks towards the closest of the 2 strangers.

State your business here, cultists.
Apr 27, 2018 9:06 pm
Bartholomew ignores Actaeon’s passive aggressive accusation, and notes there are still two more strangers to be taken care of. "If you are worried about intel, question them, Sah!" He strides imposingly to the two hiding like cowards in the bushes. "Step forward and surrender, or meet the fate of your evil kindred."
Apr 27, 2018 11:54 pm
Kel points at one of them (Actaeon). "Oh, we're the cultists, are we? Is that why we're not wearing their robes or masks and attacking them and their kobold allies?" He points his staff at the one approaching. "If you come with hate in your heart and eyes that do not see, you will not find us such easy prey."
Apr 28, 2018 1:18 am
Retrieving his bow Damien can't help but hear the conversation start. The dragonkin's accusation snaps his eyes straight to the Dragonkin, "Cultists you say? Hey Cous, were the cultists yet they are the ones wearing the mask?" Driving his swords tips in the riverbed once again, he tests the string for tension, then unstrings the bow with a practiced motion. After coiling the string, he slides it into his belt pouch. Lifting his eyes from the task, he looks back at the Dragonkin. Placing his backpack on the ground and stooping to open, pulling forth a stained white cloth, he reveals a whetstone and palms it in his right hand. Drawing the rapier from the ground and used the cloth to wipe the blade, sliding it back through his baldric. Repeating the process again for the shortsword.

"My Da always told me being courteous is a great way to start. Shall we start again? My name is Damien Lundquist and Cous over there is Kel. Who might you and your friends be?"

If you’re not cultists, then perhaps you can help us with some tasks.

Harold puts his bow in his left hand, then puts his right hand out to shake. The name’s Harold. It seems we have a common enemy, yes? Then let’s hide these bodies and be off.

Harold puts away the bow and begins dragging Kobold bodies away from the grate.
Apr 28, 2018 2:01 am
Kel gladly shakes Harold's hand. "We were about to kill those ourselves, and when your friends popped out with that mall on, well, it seemed dire. Sure glad you turned out to be friends." Kel will help moving bodies, though he clearly has only average strength. "Tell us about these tasks."
Apr 28, 2018 3:44 am
Relaxing somewhat, the Dragonborn sheaths his long sword and grimaces as he places pressure on his bleeding wound. "We have been asked by the leader to scout outside the city and bring any stray villagers to the keep, Sah. Bahamut willing, we may learn something about what’s going on here in Greenest too."
Apr 28, 2018 10:56 am
If Bahamuts will is for us to gain information, then he must be disappointed in you blowing my cover. Actaeon says in a snarky remark.
Apr 28, 2018 12:44 pm
"Your cover, Sah? It was but a mask. Bahamut simply saved your life. Now be professional and focus on the mission."
Apr 29, 2018 12:29 am
"From what I saw, your cover wasn't that great since they wantes you to identify yourself." Damien goes to his cousin to help remove the dead bodies.

With the battle over and being up close, Damien can see the minions were kobolds. As he grabs a pair of legs and begins to drag the beast to the tunnel grating, he asks, "Does anyonr here speak Kobold?"

Getting the kobold inside the tunnel he rifles thr body looking for pockets and their contents. He will also check any footwear they may be wearing as well. He will do the same for all the bodies dumped here.

Actaeon spits, I could've easily identified myself, because I already know who these people are, and where they come from. I however, do not know their reasoning on attacking Greenest of all places, and I was intending to find that out like a professional instead of rushing head first into battle every 5 seconds.
Apr 29, 2018 1:24 am
Bartholomew rolls his eyes at Actaeon’s petulant comments. "Behave soldier. Your plan was flawed and your cover was blown. We saved you. Now, if you know who these invaders are, perhaps you’ll take your head out of your ass and tell us, Sah?"

His tone changes when he addresses the stranger. "My name is Bartholomew and I am Dragonborn. Kobolds are inferior to dragons and do not have their own language. I can converse with our shared language, draconic. Well, they borrowed it from dragons in some misguided hope they are related to us."
Apr 29, 2018 1:57 am
"So instead og leaving one alive to question, you decide to kill it? Leaving us still in the dark about why they attacked Greenest." Shaking his head, Damien returns to searching the dead bodies. Anything he finds he lays on the ground next to him in a pile, to be sorted later when he has the oppurtunity. While continuing his search, he asks the dragonborn another question. "Bart, you ex-military? Surr do sound like it"

The light conditions require a disadvantage roll on all perception checks, a -5 to passive checks. I will use Damien's current two rolls...both pretty solid...especially with the plus 6...I will call for addtional checks as required.

Also I need a general heading based on the map and also Stealth checks from everyone

As an fyi...that is the direction in which you and your cousin entered the town...I did not update the map to show your route in, the map was from their previous route to the keep itself.

To the east is perfectly fine..I just want you to know for your own reference.

if left to me to dorect the path i will be skirting the outter edges of the town. Searching every hoise we come to. Actaeon, being in the back should probably focus on keeping watch, and remaining discreet, but he remains ignorant to his surroundings, and walks casually- his mind being focused on the past, and how he can use it to his advantage. However, as if by 2nd nature, his bow always remains at the ready to take out any signs of threats.

You make your way along the riverbed when you come across a pair of small folk attempting to hide along the riverbed. They see you as you approach as you spot them. One of them moves between you and the other.

"Please don't hurt us, we don't have anything, just leave us be I beg you. A male voice speaks out in the dim light. As you get closer you identify the speaker as a male halfling. He seems to be protecting a female behind him.
May 6, 2018 3:22 am
Bartholomew makes a show of sheathing his weapon before approaching the halfling. He raises his hands in a gesture of submission.

"You should fear no harm from us, Sah. We have been sent to round up any lost citizens. We need to escort you to the keep."
May 6, 2018 5:58 am
Harold walks up to the halfling, and whispers We need to be very sneaky right now! These cultists are dangerous. There is a secret tunnel that will lead you to the keep.

Harold, using whispers, describes where the tunnel is.

He then whispers, Be very careful and mindful of your surroundings, though. We don’t want the cultists discovering this secret tunnel. Please be careful!
May 6, 2018 9:29 am
As the halflings saw us quite easily, and Bartholomew and Oraten aren’t making any attempt to be sneaky, they may be a little perplexed by Harold’s comments. Furthermore Harold has just contradicted what Bartholomew said.

Bartholomew gives a side glance at the fighter. "Don’t worry about the cultists. I will escort you to the tunnel."

1d20+5 : (14) + 5 = 19

1d20+5 : (17) + 5 = 22

May 6, 2018 7:00 pm
The halfling man's shoulders drop as he seems to relax. The woman peers out from behind him. You can now see that she is quite pregnant.

"Thank you for helping us. The woman smiles meekly.
May 6, 2018 7:25 pm
"Ma’am, we must get you to safety. If you are exhausted I can carry you if you like?"
May 6, 2018 8:33 pm
She grabs the hand of the male and says, "No. Thank you though."

The halfling man speaks again, "My name is Owen, this is my wife Toolia. We are happy to follow you."
May 6, 2018 8:40 pm
Damien sighs as the Dragon-kin offers to escort and carry the woman, if need be. With a shake of his head he speaks to the Halfling in hushed whispers, "Sir, are you proficient in this?" Drawing one of the weapons he took from the previous batch of raiders, he hands it over to the Halfling gentleman, hilt first. Still continuing the conversation in hushed whispers, "What the dragon-kin offers is quite cavalier and if needed, we will surely assist. But these fine gentleman have been tasked with rescuing the townspeople, my cousin and I joined up with them and took on this task ourselves. For this to be successful, we must continue forward. Would you be able to protect your lady friend back to the tunnel? We have not encountered anything from there to here, so the path is relatively clear for you to pass." Damien continues to look around the area for any intruders while speaking to the Halfling. Still glancing around the area Damien speaks once again, "And yes Bartholomew," stressing the pronunciation of the Dragon-kin's name, "I realize I am sounding like an uncaring son of a goat."
May 6, 2018 9:37 pm
Bartholomew wonders why such long speeches are required if time is of the essence. Ignoring Damien’s opinions Bartholomew focuses on what he perceives to be the mission and escorts the halflings to the tunnel. "Hurry, follow me. It isn’t far and I must return to find other survivors. Let’s go!"

The Paladin urges the halflings to follow him and heads to the tunnel.
May 6, 2018 9:51 pm
Owen and Toolia follow the Paladin.

With a sigh of exasperation Damien just shakes his head and asks of anyone who's willing to answer, "Does this come natural to him? Or does he have to work to achieve those levels of obstinacy?" Damien turns and moves in the direction they were originally headed as a group. "Catch up when you get done holding hands with the halflings Bart. We're moving out to find other survivors."

Then Damien turns to return to the others as quietly as possible, actively watching the ground for things that could go snap underfoot.

Upon returning to the others Damien explains the situation, "Just beyond those trees, there is a building, rather large. At the rear is a group of Cultist, two, and another half dozen kobolds. Circling the building clockwise is a second group consisting of 3 more cultist and approximately another dozen kobolds. They also have a pair of dragon like creatures that are human sized. I recommend we backtrack and gather up Bart and Oraten, explain the situation to them and devise our next course of action."

Harold sneaks back towards the grate to find Bart and Oraten. He whispers, we just found the mother load of cultists and hostiles. Stay quiet, and let’s think about the best way to strategically handle them.
May 11, 2018 1:57 pm
If there are many, this may be difficult. I do not have much power left, probably enough for about 1 spell. I am tired and weary, it has been a long time since we have had a decent rest.
May 11, 2018 2:03 pm
It is a large host. We need to devise a plan to take them out, or we can avoid them, but I don’t think that’s his Harold points at Bart with his chin style.
May 11, 2018 2:24 pm
A similar conversation is being held with this other group. "I can put 2 or three kobolds to sleep again, but no more. After that my magics will be deleted, save for some simple blasting spells." He eyes the others, his eyes sparkling with plans. "If we attack I suggest that we take the smaller group while the larger one is far away, and then use Sleep on the larger group when it comes to investigate. Meanwhile, we set up archers to whittle them down while the armored folk set up a whoop funnel."

Hmmph, alright, well I still have a plan. he reaches for the cultist mask in his pack, and puts it onIf we avoid them, more will get killed, but an outright attack will get us killed. We need to lead them to us, and set up an ambush. he looks around at the group, I'll deceive them, and lead them to you lot, who will set up at the sewer. We can bottleneck them as soon as they enter the grate, and flank them on both sides. Bartholomew, Damien and Oraten on one side, while the rest of us on the other. he switches to Kel, You can cast sleep on them from behind, maybe taking at least the majority out. The rest of us can focus on picking them off. The Ranger then takes an arrow and with a deep breath jams it into his shoulder, Gah! This should help... Is everyone fine with this?

Another kobold continues to attack Harold with its dagger along with two of its allies (kobdold and kobold) one wielding its own dagger another attacking once again with its sling. The dagger finds purchase as it pierces through Kel's clothing, as the blade is pulled back it is covered in crimson. Merlin says:
OOC:
I’m not all that familiar with 5e rules, but can Bartholomew exit the tunnel without attracting attack of opportunity? Like 3 squares to east?
So moving through friendly creatures spac is possible at double movement...so it would basically take you 20/30 to get to the space next to Oraten...you wouldn't receive an AoO because you remain within the red kobolds range at that spot.
May 16, 2018 5:25 pm
Oraten is unable to connect with the small creature as he swings his mace to attack. Actaeon fires another shot with pinpoint accuracy. Erasing another attacker from the board.

"C’mon men, show some fight and slay these evil critters!" He swings his sword at the red kobold.

The Dragonborn cuts through the reptilian creature with ease as he moves past his comrades. The small kobold crumples to the ground unmoving.

**Damien and Kell**
May 16, 2018 8:47 pm
Kel fakes with his staff and then attacks purple kobold with magic. "You'll pay for your trespass, whelp!"

Kel’s firebolt lands harmlessly wide of its intended target.

**Damien**
May 17, 2018 2:32 am
Sheathing his Rapier and Shortsword, Damien strings his shortbow and nocks an arrow, taking aim upon the orange kobold. He moves to the east and then north.
OOC:
move east 2 squares and then north 2 squares.
May 17, 2018 2:25 pm

Actaeon takes a deep breath and stretches, That was close... he mutters to himself, and then seeing that Harold is stabilized, he turns to the Dragonborn, and instigates My arrows strike faster and truer than your blade it seems, paladin. My kill count was 4 for that battle, what about you?

I was scared I was going to reactivate the death rolls after Kel got done. LMAO
"It seems that my cousin is better at this than me. I think its time to reconsider the mission at hand and maybe gain a respite." My suggestion would be to return to the keep via the tunnel, get some rest and maybe resupply. What say you guys?"
May 25, 2018 1:51 am
Kel settles on his heels, considering. He listens to the others. "We could test for a time, allow Harold a moment to recover. But the patrols are tight, and if someone is keeping track, they might send reinforcements. If we stay out here, we hide."

He nods to himself. "First, we find a definable position, such as that tunnel, then we set up an ambush. Meanwhile, the stronger of us carries these kobolds off and stages a mock battle as if the cultists were attempting to subdue deserters. Meanwhile, we keep an eye out, watch the dragon for signs of activity it might be posting attention to."
May 25, 2018 2:28 am
The Dragonborn does not react to Actaeon’s comment. "I wasn’t counting, but well done, Sah."

He listens to the others comments and looks on sympathetically at Harold’s plight. He adds his opinion. "I think we should return to the keep and report what we’ve seen. We have been fighting all day and even the mightiest amongst us are dead on our feet. We need to regroup and rest and replenish. We will be of no help if we are too exhausted to defend the City."
May 25, 2018 12:02 pm

no worries...that wasn’t an impatient what’s up it was more of a prompting one/thread bump. After several day break I soemtimes forget a game thread that I could post in.

May 31, 2018 3:37 am
Looking over the gate lying on the ground, Damien speaks up,Well I could have relocked the lock, but apparently someone broke the hinges. Without a forge and a blacksmith, I would suggest telling the Lord of the keep he might want to post a guard here while his blacksmith makes a couple more hinges. Damien ends the comment with a shrug of his shoulders and a sheepish grin.
May 31, 2018 3:38 am
"I will jam it back into the opening."

With that, Harold enters the tunnel to head in for now...

May 31, 2018 8:07 pm
You are able to get the gate in place but you can't be sure as to how secure it will be. At the very least it looks like its closed.

Do you make your way back into the keep or are you resting in the tunnel?
May 31, 2018 8:42 pm
Harold would feel better about getting to the keep.
May 31, 2018 8:43 pm
Satisfied with his handiwork Bartholomew says, "We should return to the keep to rest. They may have healers to help us return to the action quicker."
May 31, 2018 8:52 pm
I agree with Bart. The sooner we get that rest, the better off we will be.
Jun 1, 2018 1:58 am
As the group returns to the Keep, Damien follows, playing rear guard.
Jun 2, 2018 3:09 am
You work your way back down the tunnel and into the basement of the keep. You continue up until you find yourselves back into the courtyard.

What do you do now?
Jun 3, 2018 7:31 am
Harold is going to look for the either Bertram or Oliver to get some more healing, and then he is going to find a place to rest a bit (perhaps a short rest, considering the threat out there).
Jun 3, 2018 10:42 am
Bartholomew thinks it’s a matter of duty to find the town leader Governor Nighthill and report. He asks for a place to rest for himself and his comrades, and any healing that can be offered.

You find Governor Nighthill inside the keep tower discussing news with the familiar redheaded Dwarf Castellan.

"Gentleman, thank you for opening the tunnel, this will allow us to save many lives this evening. Have you had any luck capturing one of the attackers or finding out the reasoning behind this attack?
Jun 4, 2018 3:49 pm
Harold - You locate both brothers tended to wounded within the small temple located in the norther section of the keep. Oliver happily casts Prayer of Healing on the entire group.

Feeling better but still needing a rest Bartholomew responds to Nighthill,"We saved two halflings, maybe more if you consider the wife was pregnant, Sah. Unfortunately the fight didn’t go well and we were wounded badly. We had to fight our way to safety and had to retreat without hostages. I humbly apologize that I failed you, Sah. Let me rest and I will try again."

" Aye, and we'll come find ya if something pressing arises."
