Chapter 1 - The Beginning

I wake from my meditative slumber 10 minutes before my watch is to start, and wave both my hands around my head and shoulders in a circular motion, cleaning myself off a bit. I close my spellbook, my spells of the day imprinted in my mind. Satisfied, I take a walk around the perimeter of where I perceive the bubble to end, staring outwards into the woods. The trees seem very peaceful out here. I don't remember the last time I had a chance to sit out under the stars like this. It's almost too quiet. I have too much time to think about the events of the past day. What have I gotten myself into? Well, there's not much I can do about that now, is there? No use thinking about it! Why can't I stop thinking about it! I clutch my quarterstaff a bit tighter as I walk around the perimeter once more.

Xadira:
As you walk the perimeter a few times nothing eventful is occurring. You are starting to think Taft may have exaggerated a bit on the deadliness of these woods when you hear rustling from a nearby crop of trees. It's two goblins. They are walking with a much larger hulking goblin. He stands almost three times their height at about 6 feet. They come out of the group of trees and are arguing about something, but you can't make out what. Their path will take them just past the bubble, but from what you can tell, they will miss you.

Suddenly as the group nears, and they can be heard more distinctly, Crolwell's pack jerks wildly. The first jerk loosens the flap to the pack but the goblin is not able to break out. He starts screaming in goblin as loud as he can.

[ GM: You have time to attempt one combat round's worth of stuff to stop the goblin, or he will attempt to break out of the bag again. After the second attempt Crolwell will be awake and aware completely and will be able to subdue him quite easily, I'm sure. Since he loosened the bag the next attempt DC will be lowered by 2 (8). ]

Rolls

Strength to break out of the pack (dc 10) - (1d20-1)

(9) - 1 = 8

Crolwell will jump up as the bag ruffles around and he will stare, horrified, at it.
"My pack!!! It's Alive!" He will scream and jump on the bag.

[ GM: I'll assume this will happen after the second attempt. Since Crolwell was resting he will be able to subdue the goblin (guaranteed with that roll) if Xadira can't stop it, or it can't break out of the bag on it's second attempt. Sorry, should have typed that all quicker. ]

I run over to attempt to secure Crolly's pack. While I'm at it, I give him a nudge with my foot to wake him.

Though you manage to get a hold of the shaking bag the goblin attempts one more push through the top. You have at least made the task a bit more difficult.

[ GM: Though you don't stop the goblin from attempting another escape of the bag you do push it's DC back up to 10 ]

Rolls

Strength to break out of the pack (dc 10) - (1d20-1)

(19) - 1 = 18

As Crolwell is awoken by his living bag, and Xadira tries to hold it closed the goblin tumbles out. For the smallest of fractions of a moment the goblin's eyes lock with Xadira, then with Crolwell's. A look of terror, and also surprise is plastered across his face. He obviously thought this would go as poorly as every other escape attempt.

[ GM: So Xadira, and Crolwell, and the Goblin need to roll for initiative to see who moves first and if this little guy can scramble away. ]

Rolls

Initiative - (1d20+2)

(6) + 2 = 8

Crolwell doesn't even notice the goblin's escape as he attempts to wrestle his "living" pack to the ground. He is screaming as he thrashes the, now empty, pack with his bare hands.
He is screaming "It's a necromancer! It's a necromancer! He has turned my pack! It's a necromancer!"

"Crolwell sir, secure that goblin! He has friends out there that will hear him!" I stand at the ready. Once the goblin manages to escape from the bag, I have a spell waiting for him.

As Crolwell wrestles his necromancer bag the Goblin starts to dash as quick as he can. Unfortunately, just a few feet from where he started he wobbles, letting out a particularly nasty swear in goblin, he falls, sleeping peacefully. As the spell ripples out the two goblins that have been walking with the bugbear yawn and flop to the ground as well. The bug bear, very upset by this, grabs one in each hand and throws them a ways out into the woods and continues on his way.

A few moments later they emerge from the woods rubbing various sore parts of themselves and they run to catch up to the bugbear. They are all soon out of sight.

Irritated, I wake Ütés up. "Keep an eye on Crolly and that goblin of his. I need to take a moment to meditate and think long and hard about some of the choices I've made recently." I shake my head and mutter to myself as I head away from her to my pack, where I sit and cross my legs. I breathe slowly, allowing my mind to come to rest. I rejoin her after some time has passed.

After Crolwell stuffs the unconscious goblin back in his pack, the rest of the night passes by. Day breaks. As you dismantle your temporary camp, by which Taft picks up his pin and fastens it back on to his robe, you make your plan for the day.

"Neverwinter is about two day's journey through these woods. We could shorten the trip with a travel through the night, but as you can see it is ill advised to be out and about in these woods at night.", Taft says. He pauses to gauge your reaction to this news.
Sep 3, 2015 4:03 pm
Aelar will shrug, "Well, if it's gonna take that long we'd best not waste any more time. I don't like the idea of traveling through the night, but my troupe is in trouble," he will glance at Utes, "And so is the prince, so I don't think we have any time to spare. I vote that we keep going through the night."
Sep 3, 2015 9:37 pm
"I'm fine traveling through the night as well, but we'll need a way of controlling Crolwell's goblin pillow during that time so as not to draw unwanted attention to ourselves. It would be a shame to waste Xadira's talent on taming his pet."

Ütés swings her pack over her shoulder and hooks her shield onto her back, ready to start the journey.
Sep 3, 2015 10:12 pm
"Pet?" Crolwell says confused.
"Pet? I thought 'e was for eating..."
Sep 3, 2015 10:35 pm
As much as it bothers me to say it, I state the obvious. "If you want to eat it, there's no reason the goblin needs to be alive. Dragging it around will only bring attention to us. Or, perhaps you can let it loose. A finer meal could be made with fresh rabbit."
Sep 3, 2015 11:35 pm
Crolwell begins laughing maniacally as if Xadira just fell for the oldest joke in the book. He begins to tear up and snort. He looks to Taft and says, "Hoo Hoo Hoo! We should... Heh Hah Hah! Get going.... Hahahaha".
Sep 4, 2015 1:08 am
The incantation is on the tip of my tongue (wouldn't everyone be happier if he just took a quick nap? In that brief amount of time they could get rid of the goblin and Crolly wouldn't even notice!), but I let the matter drop. "Let's keep moving."
Sep 4, 2015 2:54 am
"Tactical nightmare, that one" Ütés sighs under her breath. "Although..."
Sep 4, 2015 3:15 am
As you trek through the woods Taft stops every now and again, signalling a halt. After a moment or two you proceed again. As you wind through the forest you see fairly mundane wildlife. After about half-a-day of travel you emerge out of the thick woods to the edge of a river. "Ah, Neverwinter River. This will take us right into Neverwinter", Taft says, "We should take a small rest, fill our waterskins. We have a certain guide now, but our trek will still be long."

He turns and walks down to the water and starts to splash water on his face and fill his waterskin. As he looks back to the group he adds, "It may also be advisable to make sure you have washed the blood out of your clothes. We wouldn't want to raise undue suspicion when we get to the city."
