Part 1: Goblin Arrows

Oct 28, 2015 3:43 am
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city.

Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."

You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.

Once you're ready I will need to know who is driving the wagon (there's room for two up there) and then everyone else's location and if they are riding or not
Oct 28, 2015 6:51 pm
Kama has experience with wagons and horses, and offers to drive the vehicle if no one else can, or to sit up front and accompany the driver.

The half-orc is typically dressed in two mis-matched pieces of chain mail. One is a simple and well-fitted chain vest over a cloth shirt, which he treats in the professional manner of one who is practiced in some form of soldiering. The other is a very worn and haphazard-looking chain skirt settled over layers of leather and furs, which despite the skirt's ragged appearance, Kama seems loathe to remove except in the most dire of circumstances. In fact, when there's not enough oil to clean his armor, Kama prefers using it on the skirt instead of the newer-looking and superior-crafted vest.

The attention and care for the chain skirt is as lovingly provided as with the brutish greataxe Kama keeps close to his side. This weapon bears the marks of constant use, and its design is akin to his orcish blood.

My bronze scales practically glow in the morning light as I do a full scan ahead of the carriage. Once I'm satisfied there is nothing ahead, I turn towards Kama who has done an admirable job of steering thus far. "This has been an uneventful trip. Not that I don't appreciate easy gold, but I didn't sign up for courier service. I expected more than this. To emphasize my point, I throw my arms outwards at the serene atmosphere. My bow is propped in front of me ready for action that it may never see.

Hollow walks beside the wagon keeping up with it well enough. Currently she seems to be in a staring contest with the younger woman, the one named Seipora. If appears to be part of the silent argument that happens between them at least twice a day. Hollow wants Seipora to ride in the wagon, Seipora refuses unless Hollow takes an equal turn, which the teifling refuses to do on the grounds that she is working as a guard for the wagon and needs to be ready. This argument started with words on the first day, but has become this silent staring contest since, so you are all spared the bickering at least. The two people walking behind the teifling and the girl, the ones with the wide, darting, sunken eyes, seem not to notice the women arguing and keep a close watch to either side of the road, as though they expect trouble at any time. The four of them make an odd group. Hollow and Seipora appear to be women of status, their dress is fine, if a little travel worn and they carry themselves as though they are used to giving orders. However they seem to compete with each other over who can be the most servile. The nervous pair act as servants to the two women, never letting either of them out of their sight for longer than it takes to use the privy. They are dressed in the manner of common folk and seem to be so. Privately they all speak Thayian (the language of Thay) . The commoners only have a few words in the common tongue, while the teifling and the young woman speak Common and Thayian fluently.

Hearing the Dragonborn speak of being bored, Hollow says, "I don't think I will ever understand the desire for bloodshed. It is common enough in this world, I should think that if one wanted to fight it would be an easy sport to find."

Kama hums something quietly to himself, seemingly content with the pace. At times, he clicks his tongue to signal the horse as he guides the wagon along the trail.

"Can you sing?" he asks of the dragonborn. "I can recall a few songs from my old troop... though it's probably not appropriate for certain ears." He glances at the tiefling and her sister, assessing their noble graces and relative youth.

"That's a shame," muses Kama. "But, I knew a number of folk that preferred listening over performing. Old Jurgen, as an example, had a permanent scowl and it never changed, except when he heard a good song. That's when he'd grimace, like he was constipated." During the few days together, Kama would often reminisce about his homeland and the people he lived with, or his service to a faraway lord. He is quite open about his past and spares little secrets, but this is likely due to the fact that he has no secrets to keep.

Within the group, Kama is polite and engages in conversation, often times filling in the silences with anecdotes or superficial memories. He is not a terrible cook and creates simple fare, typical of what one would find when traveling with a large group and meager resources, so while it's not bad-tasting, it is plain.

The half-orc starts to hum a rolling, marching tune, and at times a few quiet words can be discerned, matching the rhythm of the horse's hooves.

Cold in hand and heart and bone,
I come from land of winter stone.
No tidings borne from frozen earth,
I seek the warmth of your sweet hearth...

The song's innuendo is completely over Wish's head. Walking alongside the singing half-orc driving the cart, the genasi smiles. Even if Gundren hasn't vouched for them, he'd like these people. Their easy camaraderie, their conflicting personalities, even their disparate origins all somehow come together to make him feel at home. This sure beats being alone, fearing for my life! I wonder if we will stay in touch after we deliver the goods in Phandalin... he wonders.

You've been on the Triboar Trail for about half a day. As you come around a bend, you spot two dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

As you approach you all hear a twig snap in the otherwise silent woods. It is at that point that you realize just how silent it is, eerily so.

Looking ahead you can see goblins on either side of the path, mostly concealed by the thick underbrush. There are two on each side of the path, just a little way ahead. They see that you've noticed them and you can see one on each side draw back their bows and the other two leap out of the woods and charge, screaming in anticipation of what they expect to be easy kills.

Kama spends this time keeping the horse and cart steady, to allow the three non-combatants onboard. He eyes the retainers, then cocks an eyebrow as he holds out the reins with one hand; a wordless gesture of "Either of you take this, please?"

With his other hand, Kama picks up one of his handaxes from his stowed pack and inserts it into his belt.

Kama rushes forward first to give his companions free reign to make their attacks, the goblin raises its sword in a feeble defense, but it is easily cleaved in two by his mighty axe. Its two separate pieces slump to the ground, spraying Kama with blood.

Hollow raises her crossbow and hits the goblin in the shoulder before he can engage with Kama, he staggers but remains standing.

Xora fires her arrow, but it goes far wide of the mark, striking a tree nearby.

Wish's arrow strikes true, slamming into the goblins chest and piercing his heart, laying the goblin low

Goblin 2, seeing what Kama did to his friend, steers clear of him and instead goes for the pretty little tiefling, swinging his sword wildly at her. His wounded shoulder holds most of his attention as the jerking motion of his attack tears the muscles further, he misses by a wide margin and loses his weapon in the process.

Goblin 4, seeing how dangerous Kama is fires an arrow at his chest, missing the mark by a long shot. The arrow embeds itself into the ground a dozen feet behind Kama. Seeing that the battle is turning against them quickly he slips back into the woods. You are all too distracted to see where exactly he went.

Walking over to the horses blocking the road, Hollow pulls a handkerchief from a pocket and holds it over her nose.

"We should see if we can tell who these poor beasts belonged to. If they had connections or family in Phandalin, we should let them know what we found."

Oct 31, 2015 4:08 am
Kama is unable to find the goblin that ran off, he is nowhere in sight. A quick a look at the horses makes it apparent that they belonged to Gundren and Sildar, your employer and his guard.

Wish and Xora are able to find that some goblin tracks lead to a barely noticeable path through the thicket on the north side of the road. You are able to make out at least a dozen distinct sets of small humanoid tracks as well as what appears to be marks as if two human-sized objects were dragged off this way. The tracks and drag marks lead to the north-west.

Determine a marching order. I will consider this your standard marching order unless otherwise indicated.

Wish is trying not to show how distressed he is about Gundren's safety. He looks at the cart of Gundren's supplies and shakes his head. Finding out what happened to Gundren is more important!

The half-orc exhales slowly, mentally releasing the energy of battle from his mind and body. Kama returns to the cart and makes a visual check on the condition of everyone inside. Satisfied that no one else is hurt, he gathers the remainder of his weapons. Then, after a pause, he glances between Hollow and Seipora, and finally says to the younger girl, "You stay with the shipment. And use these if you have to." He places both of his small handaxes in the cart, within easy reach. His tone is even, belying a seriousness that will brook no retort in this situation. "We'll be back after we look around."

Kama slings his large maul over his back, then hefts his greataxe. He turns to fall in line behind Xora, taking second position, and nods at the group to indicate his readiness to move out.
Oct 31, 2015 3:47 pm
The party heads out, Xora taking the lead, then Kama, with Hollow and Wish taking up the rear.

The trail, now that it's been discovered, is easy for Xora to follow. About 10 minutes down the trail Xora spots a snare, which she easily points out to the others and avoids. Another 10 minutes down this trail, Xora once again proves herself as an expert guide, pointing out and easily avoiding a pit trap in the middle of the trail, cleverly covered by the goblins.

Following the goblins' trail, you come across a large cave in a hillside five miles from the scene of the ambush. A shallow stream flows out of the cave mouth, which is screened by dense briar thickets. A narrow dry path on the other side of the stream leads into the cave.

Before heading out Hollow gathers her people around her and they all silently look at each other. The thicket is on the other side of the stream, to investigate you would have to cross. If you choose to do so, you will have disadvantage on your stealth check due to splashing through the water.

The thicket begins at the edge of the stream on the other side, about 10 feet out from the entrance to the cave. It appears to curve inward, away from the cave mouth, but you can't tell much more than that.

Edit: I am going to take away the Disadvantage for Wish, due to being a Water Genasi.

Wish easily crosses the stream, which is only about 2 feet deep, and peeks around the curve of the thicket. He sees two goblins around the corner, both with bows; they are obviously guards of some sort but they're not paying too much attention. to whats going on. They are playing a game with dice on the ground.

Staying a good distance away from the cave entrance, I nod to Kama and raise one finger and draw a tight "halo" in the air, indicating that I will circle the entrance from afar and keep sentry in case there is any trouble. This is a simple signal that I've always used with my clan, so I just assume he understands my meaning.

I then disappear into the trees, using the greenery to my advantage in order to remain hidden. At the same time, I study the tracks on the ground to get an estimate for how many goblins have come through this area and listen for any approaching trouble heading towards the cave from the outer forest areas.

Just inside the cave mouth, a few uneven stone steps lead up to a small dank chamber of the right side of the cavern. Kama and Hollow can hear growling coming from the chamber. Peering inside slightly, Kama can see two wolves chained up, their chain leads to a rod driven into the base of a stalagmite near the entrance to the room. Beyond the wolves the cave narrows to a steep fissure at the far end, it appears to lead upward, but you can't tell where it leads.

Beyond this room the main passage climbs steeply upward, about 20 feet down the passageway across the stream on the left side is another passage.
Nov 2, 2015 4:30 pm
Kama pauses his advance, and turns his head to look at Hollow. Wolves. I don't think they've smelled us, yet. Do you have anything that can distract or quiet them? Huh. Never noticed how her horns catch the dim light that way. Reminds me of Farmer MacGruk's prized ram, a magnificent creature standing watch over the flock like... Kama's thoughts trail on quietly.
Nov 3, 2015 12:27 am
Hollow scuttles forward and grabs Kama's arm and digs her fingernails into his arm, not enough to draw blood, but uncomfortable. She drags him back and takes his place at the edge of the cave. Her eyes narrow becoming black pits in Kama's darkvision. She peers around the corner and pulls back. Without looking at him again she telepathically says, "I can take care of one for certain, give me some jerky from your trail rations. Enough for each beast to get some.
Nov 3, 2015 12:39 am
Kama nods, and wordlessly fishes out his rations. He hands them to Hollow over her shoulder, in order to keep their profiles hidden as much as possible against the cave wall.
Nov 3, 2015 1:14 am
"Be prepared in case this doesn't work" Hollow sends to Kama.

She turns the corner and quickly throws a chunk of jerky to each animal. She slowly and quietly walks over to the wolves slightly crouched and making soothing noises.

Whispering: "Shhh...shhh...good doggies. You look hungry. How about I get those chains off and get you out of here? Sound good. There is more treats for you if you stay quiet."

edit- you know what? I just realized that Animal Handeling should have been the skill but that would not work for Friends. It's ok with me if this blows up in my face now.

I updated your post with Animal Handling :) You did well

Hollow, with a little bit of work, is able to remove the chains and lead the wolves outside, where they plop down in the shade of the thicket and fall asleep.
Nov 3, 2015 1:28 am
"If someone could give them a little more to eat, it would be appreciated. I would do it, but I left my rations back at the wagon."
Nov 3, 2015 1:36 am
Wish's eyes goggle at the sight of the tiefling leading the wolves out of the cave...of all outcomes he imagined, this was not one of them. "Good work!"

Wish looks at the wolves and sees how they've been abused and chained. Hating to see anything mistreated, he takes some food from his pack - more pemmican - and sets a bit down in front of each of the slumbering canines.

Wish turns back to Hollow and asks in a low voice: "See anything else?"
Nov 3, 2015 1:46 am
Now that the wolves are outside you can see how thin they are, like they are only fed on the goblins' whim, which is the case. You can also see they are covered in scabs, as if the goblins regularly beat them. They awaken long enough to eat their treat and fall back asleep.
Nov 3, 2015 1:58 am
"Not yet. The cave is deep. These two were secondary sentries, you two can come in a little bit and be ready to advance if we run into trouble in the next chamber."
Nov 3, 2015 2:19 am
"Got it. We'll be a bit behind you." Wish looks for Xora to catch her eye and gesture to join them. Even if he can't spot her, he'll make the gesture, figuring that she's going to see them from concealment. He'll wait so that he and she can enter the cave together, on the dry path on the right, with a torch to light their way in the darkness. He re-lights his torch as he waits.

Kama enters the vacated chamber, investigating the area. He steps up to the fissure at the far end to determine what he can see through it.

These two would make fine hounds. They remind me of Froggy and Garry, in a way. Thinner, of course. I hope they'll come with us once this is done.
Nov 3, 2015 3:05 am
Kama approaches the fissure, where he finds a pile of discarded rubbish at the bottom of a chute. Looking up the chute, he can see the there is something of a natural chimney leading up to what appears to be another room.

Naatkinson sent a note to foolsmask
Nov 3, 2015 3:34 am
Kama makes a mental note of the current layout. This chamber just to the right of the cave entrance, and another chamber beyond with no visible means of access besides the rudimentary garbage chute. Probably connected somewhere further inside.

And across the stream, another passage on the left, 20' in.

He returns to the entrance to the chamber that housed the wolves, and peeks down the path leading further into the cave.
Nov 3, 2015 4:17 am
I leave an entire day's ration of wild game jerky behind for the wolves. Such cruelty, disturbing these beautiful creatures in this way. There's no honor in that.

When Wish signals for me, I appear next to him like a shadow and motion for him to continue while I watch our backs.
Nov 3, 2015 4:42 am
Hollow takes up her position 15 ft. Behind Kama

The main path leads steeply upwards, and curves off to the right, Kama can't see anything around the curve. Off to the left is the passage he saw earlier across the stream, leading up. It looks to have a lot of loose stones at the beginning of that path. It also climbs steeply upwards and you can't see far up there.
Nov 3, 2015 5:57 am
Wish moves confidently after the others, both trusting his companions and taking comfort in the water bubbling along right next to him. At the steps up to the right he pauses and waves the torch in that direction, so that he and Xora can see a bit more of the wolf den. He pauses, watching the dim shapes of the others up ahead.

(OoC: How deep is the water here, and how wide? Is it small enough that his shape water ability could significantly affect the flow of water, is it enough that he could swim in it easily, or is it somewhere in between?)
Nov 3, 2015 6:02 am

Kama pauses briefly. His mind expresses confusion for a moment, then takes on a matter-of-fact tone. Look like a goat? No. Your horns remind me of Mr. Butters, for some reason. Proud, watching from his perch on the mountain. He was certainly the dominant one in the flock, and he would recognize and remember you. And you never, ever, turn your back on him. Old MacGruk taught me that well.

He points to the path on the left, across the stream. Best avoid that. Loose rock, probably make a lot of noise if we take it. Let the water man know.
Nov 3, 2015 4:58 pm
"So, I look AND act like a goat, AND you like that?! Aaahhaacckk!" That last outburst was more a feeling than actual words, but you can't seem to unscramble it true meaning. It is meant to express a disagreement with your opinion, you know that much.

"I'll tell Wish and Xora we are headed the other way then."

Hollow quietly returns to the point where she can see Wish and Xora and they are in range of her telepathy and sends to each of them, "There are two paths ahead. The one by the stream is littered with rubble and is likely to get us noticed. The GOAT-LOVER says we should take the other path. We are moving forward. Please keep an eye on the path by the stream, as we don't want to get out-flanked."

The main passage continues up beyond another set of uneven steps ahead, bending eastward as it goes. A waterfall sounds out from a larger cavern somewhere ahead of you.

You can see a rickety bridge spanning a passage overhead as you round the curve. Beyond the bridge the passage continues curving to the east (right).

As Kama continues around and heads toward the bridge you can hear the sound of water growing louder quickly... too quickly. The passage is suddenly filled with a mighty roar, as a huge surge of rushing water pours down from above!

Order is Kama, followed by Hollow 15 feet behind, followed by Wish and Xora 15 more feet behind, correct? And Wish/Xora have a torch?

Everybody needs to roll a Dexterity save AND a Strength save

In situations like this where someone has to roll a save, would you like me to just roll the saves for everyone? This would save time, but I know a lot of people don't like when people roll the dice for them.

Well... crap.

Kama braces himself as best he can against the onrush of water. Inwardly he knows how difficult this will be, but one can hope. Before the surge reaches him, he shouts, "Alarm!" and takes a deep breath.

Kama is unable to avoid the flow of water but manages to brace himself against it and is not moved from his spot.
Wish gracefully swims against the current to safety
Hollow is too stunned to move and is caught with the full force of the crashing wave, ending up on her back at the mouth of the cave
Xora easily steps into the room that held the wolves and avoids the wave completely.

Kama can now see a goblin on the bridge, looking down after the flood to see if anyone remains in the cave. He sees Kama and looks like he's getting ready to signal for something, possibly another wave?

Before anyone can react the goblin signals to someone in the room to his left. After that he draws a javelin and throws it down at Kama, missing terribly.

*Well, THAT wasn't natural...*

Wish realizes that he was mistaken - it wasn't Xora who slipped from his fingers in the flood, but Hollow. He back to the light of the cave mouth to check on her, and to dig out his oilskin pouch of flint & tinder.

He helps her to her feet and steadies her. "Are you hurt? Can you stand? What WAS that?"
Nov 3, 2015 10:01 pm
Kama does a quick assessment of the situation. In all likelihood there are a number of goblins off to the side, probably just beyond that side of the bridge. And he is apparently alone now. He makes a split-second decision and commits to it.

"Wish!" calls the half-orc. "We're gonna have company!"

Kama twists his body, spinning as he reaches down for the javelin at his feet. As he comes back around, he plants his feet, launches the javelin at the goblin on the bridge, and shouts:

"You dropped this!"

Hollow staggers to her feet and pushes free of Wish and limps and staggers back to the bridge room. Her eyes glow with a cold light and her hands sparkle as giving off stardust. When she sees the dead goblin she pauses for a moment and gives a pout of frustration.

"Yes, but the threat remains. We must press on for now."

She does not however make a move to lead.
Nov 3, 2015 10:26 pm
Moments after Hollow reaches Kama and the goblin, you hear another wave crashes down the passageway. Expecting it this time, you are all able to make it out of the way.

Now that the goblin is dead, it is totally silent
Nov 3, 2015 10:39 pm
Gah, I look like a wet pig.

Kama peels himself away from the wall, which he used to help brace himself against the second wave. He looks at the rest of the party and tightens his grip on his greataxe.

"They know we're here," he says, ignoring the obviousness. "More gobbos to the right, number unknown. I'm guessing the path will take us there, or somewhere that we can access the room they're in."

Kama listens to the lack of noise. "They might be waiting to see if we're dead. Or maybe a signal from the fellow at our feet. Anybody speak Goblin?"

Kama is thinking of drawing the goblins in, or at least settling them down in order to re-establish surprise.
Nov 3, 2015 10:52 pm
"The time for subterfuge is over I think. We should press the the attack. Take this." Hollow presses her crossbow and bolts into Kama's hands. "Drop it when we get into melee, I can buy another later."

Nov 4, 2015 12:06 am
Kama takes the offered weapon, and checks to make sure the bolt is primed. "All right," he says. "I'll advance, and get into melee when we find them. They may be fortified or behind barricades, so if that's the case we'll need to either find cover of our own, or flush them out somehow." He checks that the rest of the party is set.

"I trust the rest of you to unleash death from afar.
" Kama begins to make his way up the path, crossbow held at the ready. He adds as an aside, "Just watch your aim. I don't want to be a skewered wet pig up there."
Nov 4, 2015 12:13 am
My nostrils flare at the insult. "If you get hit with one of my arrows, it won't be an accident."
Nov 4, 2015 12:14 am
The passage continues to curve around to the east, leading to a set of rough stone steps leading south. To the left of the steps you can see the stream is flowing from the up above. Advancing up the steps you come into a larger cavern.

This cavern is half filled with what used to be two large pools of water, to your left, empty now after they drained them atop you. The cavern extends to the south and east (now your left). It is inhabited by 3 goblins, which are standing by the empty pools. On your right is a passage heading west, apparently toward the rickety bridge. On the far side of the chamber is another set of stairs leading up.

Seeing you climb the steps, the goblins panic. Two of them draw small javelins and another prepares to run toward the steps in the back of the room.

Goblin 1 rushes at Kama, taking a wild stab at him. He appears to score a very solid hit of Kama's chest, but as it begins to press through his armor the spear shatters in his hand. The shock of the spear exploding gives Kama time to swing back, his axe swinging right over the little goblin's head

Goblin 2 throws his javelin at Kama, which misses widely, and then draws a nasty looking little sword.

Goblin 3 makes a break for the stairs, shouting for assistance

Player Turn

Goblin 1 is standing in front of Kama with a broken spear

Using the momentum of the missed attack, Kama crosses his arms and maneuvers the head of his greataxe back around and over his head, turning it in a downward diagonal slice.

Wish vows to himself: *When we get out of this and get to Phandalin, I'm definitely going to buy a lantern!*

(edit: you all typed a lot faster than I did)

Having lit his torch, he follows Hollow up the stone path and nods at Xora. She's going to be better with her bow than he will with his, so he keeps the torch. He gets up to Kama, Hollow, and the dead goblin and looks at the half-orc holding the crossbow. Wish nods. "Hollow's right. Who knows what they're doing to Gundren? How about you and I go ahead? I'll sneak and you shoot if they see us; with the torch, both Xora and Hollow will be able to see the goblins and shoot them as we draw them out." He grins. "It's nothing to what you can do, Hollow, but I can do some tricks with the torch, too." He looks expectantly at them.

Jogging after the others with the light source that allows Xora and him to see anything at all, Wish trots up the stairs with his rapier in his other hand. He dashes to catch the goblin next round if Xora's shot misses.

More silence. I'm beginning to hate silence.

Kama picks up Hollow's crossbow and tosses it to Wish. For good measure, he picks up the unbroken javelin left by the goblin and hefts it, assessing its balance. He briefly turns to the party nods, then starts a purposeful jog to the stairs where the goblin disappeared.
Nov 4, 2015 2:33 am
Wish sheathes his rapier and, with crossbow and torch in hand, jogs up the stairs with Kama.
Nov 4, 2015 1:58 pm
As Kama reaches the top of the steps he can see that he has entered a large chamber. In the center of the chamber is a smoldering fire pit; it looks like it just recently went out. In the south (straight ahead) side of the room you can see what looks like supplies, probably stolen from passing caravans. To your right are a couple of stalagmites, beyond which is a hole in the ground, possibly a shaft to a lower area.

As you step up you hear a scuffle behind the stalagmites to your right, and can barely see the edge of a large boot sticking out from behind it.

As the rest of the party reaches the top of the steps a large bugbear leaps out from behind a stalagmite, morning start swinging menacingly, "Puny human is Klarg dinner, you no take! Ripper, kill them!" With that a large wolf comes out from beside him and begins to charge, and 3 goblins pop up from behind the supplies in the back of the room with bows ready to fire.

You can hear barking coming from behind you as well, and it's getting close quickly (next round)

She follows it up with another Eldritch Blast, a heavy streak of blue and white light that burns and freezes the air as it flashes by.

I get just within range of the biggest threat, which at the moment seems to be the bugbear before I unleash my first arrow. At this point I'm looking for any excuse to kill something if they dare make a move against us. I eye the wolf warily but make no move to ease its suffering just yet.

Klarg takes an arrow to his massive chest, staggering him slightly as he advances on Kama.

At this point the two wolves you rescued earlier charge in, revealing the source of the barking coming up behind you. The first wolf leaps to intercept Ripper, catching his throat in his jaws and bearing him to the ground. Ripper goes limp in the other wolf's jaws. The other leaps for Klarg, slamming into him, attempting to take him down. Klarg flexes his massive muscles and manages to stay on his feet.

Klarg ignores the pesky wolf, worried more about Kama's huge axe he takes a swing at him. Kama barely manages to duck out of the way of an attack that surely would have crushed his skull.

The two goblins that Wish has engaged drop their bows and draw weapons. Goblin 1 pulls out a spear, thrusting for Wish's belly, but his attack is turned by his fine armor. Goblin 2 draws a short sword and takes a swipe as well, gashing Wish terribly across his chest (8 damage).

Goblin 3, seeing the pretty tiefling launch a powerful magical bolt at Ripper, fires an arrow at her, hitting her in the side (5 damage). The arrow penetrates deeply, causing Hollow's knees to buckle and her vision to go black. She is unconscious.

Wish's fine blade pierces through Goblin 2's chest and exits out his back. The little beast stares down uncomprehendingly at the blade before falling over, quite dead.

Kama's great axe begins sinking into Klarg's midsection, but before it can go too far Klarg grabs hold of Kama's wrist and shoves, staggering him and forcing him to remove his axe. Klarg yells furiously, "Klarg Ki-*bluch*", his words shortened by the presence of an arrow in his throat. He releases Kama's arm and grabs at his neck, trying to stem the flow of his precious blood. In moments he is on his knees, and then he is on his face, dead.

Hollow's lifeblood flows freely from her punctured side, she doesn't have much time left.

Wolf 1 and 2 get off of their kills and bound over to Wish's side, biting and ripping at Goblin 1. Goblin 1 goes down easily under their coordinated attacks.

Being the last of his group, Goblin 3 drops his bow and cowers, begging for mercy in broken common.

I'm about to kick Hollow's body aside and out of my path when, against my better judgement, I take a closer look at her wounds to confirm that she is truly dead. She isn't. "Still alive." I spit the words out, but it's hard to tell whether they are said in surprise or in disgust. Perhaps a mixture of the two? Noticing the arrow, I carefully remove it from her, then bandage her wound haphazardly. Once that is done, I clean her blood off the arrow and place it in my quiver. "Don't expect me to do this again. Unless there's ammunition in it for me, that is." You're not quite sure if that's meant to be a joke. It doesn't seem that way.

Stupid woman needs to learn when to choose her battles. Can't expect others to come save you. I look down at her one last time before I continue towards the goblin, cornering him menacingly.

Kama stares down at the slain bugbear with dilated eyes and flared nostrils. After a few moments of silence, he inhales sharply and swings his greataxe down at the monster's neck to decapitate the body. He wraps his fingers in the bugbear's hair and lifts the trophy off the ground.

With the fresh splatter of blood dripping down his face and glistening in the faint light of dying embers, Kama turns to look at the lone goblin. He exhales, his breath steaming in consideration of the cowering creature.

"How many more of you across the bridge?" he growls through tusked teeth, his voice tight and low.

Vignette of the first hour of Hollow's recovery:
* Wish controls flame on the torch to expand the flames and shape them into a burning globe in the fire pit (lasts 1 hour). (If there isn't fuel in the fire pit, he'll break up some boxes and feed the fire before the hour is out, so that Xora and he will have light while Hollow recovers). "Sounds like Gundren isn't here. I wonder who the 'stoopid hooman' is?"
* Having assured the light source, he'll bind the goblin while it's still intimidated by the others. "Hollow's going to need a while to recover."

* Wish searches this cavern and the boxes of supplies to see if there's anything of interest.

If nothing comes along to molest us during the first hour, Wish will rest during the second hour. If/when that happens, I'll roll a hit die for regained HP when it is complete. "We might as well rest while we wait for Hollow to wake up."

The goblin faints at the sight of Klarg's severed head.

Wish finds that the majority of the supplies are marked with the blue lion symbol of the Lionshield Coster, a trading company that has recently set up a trading post and warehouse in Phandalin.

Wish also finds an unlocked treasure chest among the supplies. It contains 600 cp, 110 sp, two potions of healing, and a jade statuette of a frog with tiny golden orbs for the eyes. The statuette is small enough to fit in your pocket.

You manage to rest for the full two hours safely. You have completed a short rest (everyone except Hollow, who is awake now with 1 HP) and may spend your Hit Dice to recover your health.

Since the unconscious goblin will prove to be an easy prisoner for Wish to secure, Kama allows the battle lust to dissipate. As the group rests, a now-calm Kama sits cross-legged next to the two wolves watching over Hollow. He does not attempt to pet the wolves, instead he allows them to familiarize themselves with his scent, on their own time. If the wolves make first contact, Kama reciprocates.

When the goblin wakes, Kama walks over to the creature and sits in front of it. He repeats his question, this time with a quiet demeanor, "How many more of you are there, across the bridge?"

Wish, ever the scientist, puts this to the test. It does! It does fit in his pocket!

The flawed part of him delights in this.

Wish takes one of the potions and hands the other to Hollow, then points out the chest with money in it to the others. "Looks like they've been robbing caravans for a while...but they've either been sending the gold elsewhere, or someone's been skimming off the top."

Nov 5, 2015 3:58 pm
I wonder if counting his own fingers when they're separated from his body will help jog his memory?

"I'll make it simple, then," says Kama, struggling to retain his previous calm. He rests his empty hands on his knees and takes a deep breath. "Besides Yeemik, there are other goblins with the human, yes? More than the number of your friends taking dirt naps here? Or less?"
Nov 5, 2015 4:16 pm
The goblin is quick to speak, wanting to stay on the big guy's good side, "More! More!" he pauses to think for a second, "No more Klargs though!"
Nov 5, 2015 5:10 pm
Kama nods, approvingly. "Are there more traps across the bridge?" he asks, continuing a calm line of interrogation. Kama remembers the surging river quite vividly, and he'd like to avoid similar encounters.

The goblin is all too eager to please and ends up drawing a rudimentary map for you of the next room over where they are keeping the hooman.

Xora is able to find a couple dozen badly made arrows and some slightly spoiled food as well as some spears, javelins, and a couple poorly made swords. She is also able to recover one of her arrows from Klarg's corpse.
Nov 5, 2015 6:13 pm
Kama studies the map to acquire his bearings within the cavern network, mentally placing (as best he can) the location and direction of their next move. Once satisfied with the result, Kama changes the topic.

"You've been busy," he says to Fizbin. He fixes the goblin with a stare. "You said the dwarf is at the 'castle with king boss.' Who is King Boss and where is the castle?" Kama indicates another map ought to be drawn, if need be.
Nov 5, 2015 6:28 pm
"Who king boss? King Grol is king boss, he live in castle dat way! Far, far, in woods! " he says, pointing in a direction, which you know to be northeast. You also know that Neverwinter Wood lies in that direction.
Nov 5, 2015 6:42 pm
"Why was the dwarf taken there?" asks Kama, "while the human remained here?" Something seems odd; why would the pair be split up if this was just a goblin raid? And talk of affiliation with a castle some distance away means a level of organization.
Nov 5, 2015 7:20 pm
Hollow looks reluctantly at the potion bottle in her hand then winces when one of the wolves shifts on the ground next to her and causes her to move the wrong way. She uncorks the botte and downs the potion with a grimace.
"Can this stuff spoil? It tastes awful."
A moment later she stiffens and shivers, then a relaxed euphoric look takes over her expression. The potion works at least. Once the magic has run its course she gingerly rises to her feet and take a few steps. The wolves follow her and she pats them on the head between the ears.
"Thanks fel...doggies. That was a much needed assist their , for my part."
Turning to Xora, "And thank you. I will try to be more careful next time someone is shooting at me."

Wish puts more wood on the fire, then stands up.
"Sildar might know a bit more about what happened to Gundren."

"Yeah, yeah, King boss is big buggybare!" He responds to Kama and then to Wish, "Just dis dwarf, I think!"
Nov 5, 2015 8:43 pm
Kama tries to mask his worry. This is turning out to be bigger than just a mere delivery. Well, Xora should be happy at this turn of events.

He glances at Wish and raises his eyebrows, an expression of unspoken concern for the group's benefactor. Then he turns further as he hears conversation from the previously-unconscious Hollow, and nods at her improved condition.

Finally, Kama turns back to Fizbin. "Yeemik. A goblin?" The half-orc is obviously trying to learn as much as possible about the impending confrontation.
Nov 5, 2015 10:49 pm
Fizbin nods enthusiastically, "Stinky, smelly goblin!"
Nov 5, 2015 11:04 pm
"As opposed to the sweetly aromatic ones, I suppose."
Nov 5, 2015 11:05 pm
Fizbin looks confused at Wish's remark, "Huh?" He says stupidly.
Nov 6, 2015 1:02 am
Kama's line of questioning has been satisfied, for the moment. With a final nod, he stands and walks over to Hollow and her hounds, to check on her condition.

"I'm thinking it will result in a direct confrontation," Kama says to Wish, though it is also addressed to the group. "This Yeemik and the rest of his horde won't be inclined to negotiate, even with little Fizbin. You saw how they greeted us here." He eyes the javelins that Xora found, thinking they will come in handy when the group has to assault the room.

Kama returns to where he left Klarg's head. "However, we might be able to shake their resolve and swing the odds in our favor with a little... persuasion."
Nov 6, 2015 1:55 am
"What do you have in mind?"
Nov 6, 2015 2:53 am
Wish is so frustrated at not being able to see in the dark.
"I like what you're thinking, Kama - tossing the head in at them to disturb and enrage them? Or were you thinking something else?"
Wish turns to the tiefling.
"Hollow, can you make magical light? If we don't have light, Xora and I aren't going to be able to help much..."
He then ponders for a moment.
"Let's see...we could either have one of us run in with a torch or magical light, so that those of us with ranged weapons can see targets, or we could set up an ambush and use the head and some taunts to draw them out."

The genasi considers the scratched map again.
"If we could climb that slope and then draw them down toward the bridge, we could attack from both sides...or, if we don't want to climb it, Kama could knock them down the slope and someone at the bottom could attack them when they fell."

(OoC: Was there enough light from the cave mouth that those of us without darkvision would be able to see at the bottom of that slope without a torch?)

The slope is at the edge of the light from the cave mouth
Nov 6, 2015 5:08 am
Wish nods. "Yeah, I can do something similar with fire..." He glances at Fizbin. "Does Yeemik keep a fire, perhaps for cooking?"

He sees how impatient everyone else is; he gets it, because he's eager to rescue Sildar, too.

"Whether a cook fire is lit or not, I suppose I could carry a torch and fight alongside Kama, leaving Hollow and Xora able to fire at range..."

Wish hated to see one of his companions - Hollow - so close to death (and didn't relish how close he came, either!), so he doesn't like the idea of doing another frontal attack. But he's somewhat confident that he and Kama would work well side-by-side. He pulls out and lights another torch and draws his rapier again. "Other ideas? Which approach sounds best?"
Nov 6, 2015 5:23 am
I've managed to collect a small pile of the most useful weapons together while the rest of the party members yammered on and on. I drop it loudly on the ground in the middle of the group. "We go in, I shoot. Plan is always the same. Here. Weapons." I grab a javelin for myself.
Nov 6, 2015 6:01 am
"Don't forget, they still have Sildar," says Kama. "Assuming the human is still alive, they may threaten him or use him as a shield." He nods to Xora, but opts not to take one javelin of his own. He hasn't had much luck with these goblin weapons, lately.

Kama hefts the severed head of the bugbear. "I'm looking to shock the gobbos, hard. Break their resolve to fight, make them question themselves when they see this rolling at their feet. That should buy us time to whittle their numbers. Maybe even make the entire lot surrender." He gestures to the caverns beyond, ignoring the droplets of gore spitting about. "I go in first, bring all their eyes on me. The rest of you pick out the immediate threats and silence them."
Nov 6, 2015 6:08 am
Wish nods, sheathes his rapier, and takes one of the proffered javelins. "Thanks, Xora. I'll be right behind you, Kama. Let's go!"
Nov 6, 2015 6:09 am
"Based on our prisoner's description there are plenty of places to hid in that chamber. Keep a sharp eye out.
Nov 6, 2015 1:59 pm
Fizbin thinks for a moment, "Yeemik no keep fire in sleep area, high spot. Yeemik friends keep fire in low spot." he says, pointing to the higher area and lower area on his map.
Nov 6, 2015 3:59 pm
"Stands to reason that Sildar would be kept in the low area," says Kama, "though if they're expecting us, there's no telling where they'll move him to." He half-shrugs. A small part of him is much more interested in the anatomical study of a goblin's innards through first-hand reference, than the rescue of the human.

Kama looks at Fizbin, then asks the group, "Tie him up here?" He returns his gaze to the bound goblin. "After all, the fight will get confusing, and I'll be swinging at anything short and spiky. Wouldn't want him to get hurt." The last bit was primarily for Fizbin's ears and benefit.
Nov 6, 2015 4:03 pm
Fizbin glances at Kama's large axe and pales, "Fizbin be good, Fizbin stay here!"

The party moves along toward the chamber where they are keeping Sildar. They cross the rickety bridge over the main passage which creaks ominously but no one comes to investigate. Kama walks up and peers around the corner into the chamber. This large cave is divided in half by a ten-foot-high escarpment. A steep natural staircase leads from the lower portion to the upper ledge. The air is hazy with the smoke of a cooking fire, and pungent from the smell of poorly cured hides and unwashed goblins.

Kama can see five goblins around the fire, eating their meal. None of them is obviously the leader. None of them seem to have noticed Kama watching them. The closest goblin is about 20 feet from where Kama is standing, and the stairs stand about 30 feet away.

Sildar must be on the upper level, unless we're too late. Gonna assume Yeemik and maybe more gobbos are up there, too. Be ready to fan out behind and pick off targets. I'm going in.

I hope she's listening.

Kama takes a deep breath and mentally assures himself that he still has his greataxe and Klarg's head. He summons all 6' 6" of his half-orc frame, sticks out his chest, and strides purposefully into the room towards the five goblins and the fire. His lips turn into a scowl behind his tusks.

I hope this works.

The goblins don't pay Kama much heed at first, assuming the large half-orc is their leader Klarg. A few moments later the goblins on the other side of the fire see that he's holding Klarg's head in his hand. They point at Kama wordlessly and sputter.

Kama gets closer and closer and still they can't speak. The goblins with their back to Kama turn to face him and gape.

Kama's mighty blow cleaves right through goblin 1 and digs deep into goblin 2's side.

Hollow's magical blast hits Goblin 3's shoulder, destroying muscles and tendons.

Xora's shot is just wide of the mark and shatters against the far wall.

The goblins are shocked by the sudden assault and begin scrambling to get their weapons ready.

He turns and steps past the fire towards one of the unharmed goblins, and swings his greataxe down as though to punish that goblin's lack of initiative. Xora's second shot misses, shattering the arrow against the wall.

The remaining goblins throw themselves on the ground, begging for mercy, "Please no kill!"

At that time you hear someone from the area beyond the steps. Looking over you see a goblin, a bit larger and stronger looking than most, holding who you recognize to be Sildar by the edge of upper area, "You leave now, or me kill stupid hooman!"

Sildar looks like he's seen better days, obviously having been beaten during his captivity. His white hair and goatee are matted with dried blood. He slumps over, barely able to hold up his own weight.

He looks down at you, "Don't trust him, he's going to kill me anyway," he manages to speak, slurring his words terribly. The goblin responds by pulling roughly on Sildar's hair, exposing his neck. He rests a dagger against his neck and smiles his most twisted smile.
Nov 10, 2015 6:28 pm
"No," growls Kama, stalking towards the stairs. He ignores the cowering goblins at the lower level, the slick of fresh blood staining the ground, and the gore dripping from his own armor. Kama kicks Klarg's head soccer-style towards what is presumably Yeemik. "You release the human unharmed, and I consider sparing your life."

Kama's expression, coupled with the intent purpose behind his advance, belies the fact that he'd love nothing more than to introduce Yeemik to his greataxe.

We aren't getting anywhere with intimidation tactics. I'll try something else, please play along everyone. Hollow broadcasts this to her allies.

She drops her hands at her sides and saunters into the room. She motions for the wolves to follow her with a quiet snap.

"Hello, Yeemik, my name is Hollow. We got off to a bad start. We don't wan to kill you. To prove it my friends will put their weapons away." She nods at the others and hopes the do it then continues. "You are right. We don't want the human to die, Sildar is a friend. We wanted to negotiate his release but things got out of hand with Klarg back there. Now Klarg is dead and we can't make him rich. Lucky for you. Now we get to negotiate with you. Let Sildar go and we will pay you your weight in gold. We have it on a wagon, back on the road. Your scouts jumped us before we had a chance to talk. Now, in addition to money we can offer protection from your king boss man, all you have to do to earn that is tell us what you know about his plans, then we will be good friends. All we want is for everyone to walk out of here alive and well, and as friends. I promise we won't hurt you. We have Fizbin tied up in the next room, unhurt. We have your wolves, unharmed. See we are friends...or we can be. Just let Sildar go. You have my word."

Hollow pours on the charm, pouting when talking about violence, smiling when talking of friendship, and batting her eyelashes like a strumpet new to court, hoping to win the goblin over.

Yeemik is sceptical at first, but at the promise of gold he perks up, "You take hooman. Klarg dead, me boss here now! You leave, come back with many gold!" He releases Sildar, who stumbles down the stairs to join you.

Kama bears Sildar across the bridge, to the room containing provisions and the bound Fizbin. He sets the human down as gently as he can, and works to free any restraints and assess Sildar's condition.

"Name's Kama," says the half-orc. He is assuming that Silder is conscious and listening, but doesn't bother checking that until he's done with his assessment. "You're the human with Gundren?"

The man nods, "Name's Sildar Hallwinter, and I was to accompany Gundren on his way to Phandalin," he says, and then holds his hands out to show the environment, "as you can see, we never made it. We were ambushed in the woods and dragged here. They didn't keep Gundren long, they took him to their base of operations, along with Gundren's map to Wave Echo Cave. That's probably why they were after us to begin with, and they got what they were after with no trouble."
Nov 11, 2015 5:28 pm
"What's at Wave Echo Cave?" asks Kama. He briefly leaves Sildar to bring over some of the slightly-spoiled, but hopefully still-edible, food in the goblins' stash, reasoning that anything would be better than nothing (and he gave his rations to the wolves). Kama also holds out his waterskin. "Don't suppose that has anything to do with the provisions we were hired to cart over to Phandalin?"
Nov 11, 2015 5:52 pm
Wish descends the stairs to rejoin Hollow, jingling the pouch with a grin.

He calls out to the cowering goblins: "You're free now! Both Yeemik and Klarg are no more! Hooray!" Then he turns to Hollow and stows the pouch. "Let's see what the others are up to, you tricksy minx." His respect for her keeps growing and growing.
Nov 11, 2015 6:14 pm
"Gundren and his brothers, Tharden and Nundro, discovered the lost entrance to Wave Echo Cave..." he tells the tale of Wave Echo Cave's history:
Quote:
More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver's Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge (called the Forge of Spells), where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby human town of Phandalin prospered as well. But then disaster struck when orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path.

A powerful force of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magic treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing spell battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave was lost.
He finishes the story of the history of Wave Echo Cave, "So, yes, they supplies you were bringing are for the re-opening of the cave. Mostly mining supplies and clothing."

"I also remember the goblins speaking of someone called the Black Spider, if that means anything to you," he says after a short pause while he thinks.

The goblins that Wish spoke to remain cowering on the floor of the cave while the wolves lick their lips hungrily.

Sorry for the copy/paste. It's a long story to try to work into a cohesive role-playing moment!
Nov 11, 2015 6:52 pm
Hollow won't meet the eyes of her party memebrs. She stare off toward the mouth of the cave. It might just be the rush of battle, but her face is flush. "Silver-tongued Devils. Never trust hem" she says in a low quiet tone to no one in particular. Xora hears in her mind, Not even for a minute.

Snapping back into herself, Hollow moves with purpose and says to the group, "I need to go check on my si...servants. I'm sure they are fine but we've been gone long enough. This man needs medical attention that we seem ill equipped to provide. We'll make a sled to get him back to the wagon then we head to Phandilin to learn more about that castle I think."

With that she makes to leave the cave.
Nov 11, 2015 7:12 pm
"What do we do about them?" Kama asks of the group, indicating the remaining goblins. The half-orc checks on the condition of the wounded goblin, and tears strips from their clothing to bind the gash and stop the bleeding. To the unharmed goblins, he orders them to create Hollow's sled.
Nov 11, 2015 7:14 pm
The goblins, terrified of Kama, rush to find materials to make a sled. They are able to piece something workable together in a short time.
Nov 11, 2015 7:41 pm
"How can we trust them not to run off and tell the Black Spider we are coming? I can't afford to pay them anything myself, and it is unlikely that Gundren, if he is still alive, or the townsfolk of Fandolin will want them around." She shudders a little, then continues, "I can only think of the one option." You all understand that killing them is what she is talking about, but she doesn't like it.
Nov 11, 2015 7:47 pm
Wish retrieves Hollow's crossbow and frowns threateningly at Fizbin.
"Yeemik is dead, too. Now, you're not going to do anything foolish, like trying to attack us or anyone else on the road, are you?"

If Fizbin seems disinclined to fight, Wish will smile and cut him loose. "Good. My friend Kama is trying to help one of your goblin friends who was hurt in the fighting. Now go and help us build a litter for our injured friend."

With that, Wish goes and talks to the man, clasping hands with Sildar. "Good to see you again, sir. I'm glad we were able to find you in time. We'll get you the rest of the way to Phandalin in short order. Then maybe we can figure out where the goblins' - or this Black Spider's - base of operations is, and bring him back as well. I'm sure Nundro and Tharden are worried."

Fizbin hurriedly assists in creation of the litter, all three of them are being good little goblin boys.

Sildar thanks everyone for the timely rescue, "Yes, it would be nice to get to Phandalin. Maybe I could sleep in a real bed again, my old bones aren't made for this anymore!"
Nov 11, 2015 8:19 pm
Wish points out, softly, to Hollow. "Trust is always an option." He looks at the industrious goblins, working to create a litter for their friend Sildar. "Killing in battle is one thing, but killing in cold blood...? I don't want to be that person, I don't want any of us to be that person, and I don't think you want to be that person." He looks away, out into the distance, afraid that he's flubbing his interactions with this beautiful person he wants to be his friend. "I don't know what it's like to have people depending on me, to lead people, like you do. But living on my own for so long, I've learned to value anything with a life of its own. Maybe you don't see your way to trusting these goblins to be good, and don't see another option. Allow me to suggest another option."

Wish turns to the goblins, as they've finished the travois. "Good work! Now, let me ask you something: what do you think your King will think of the job you did here today?" He squats down to be at eye level with them. "You didn't protect Klarg, and now he's dead. You didn't protect Yeemik, and now he's dead. What do you think your king is going to do if he finds you here as the only survivors? I don't think he's going to be very happy. If I were you, I'd leave, never come back, and hope that King Grol never, ever finds you." (he attempts persuasion - let me know if there are any situational modifiers or ADV) If they're not running away already, he looks at Kama and Hollow for help in intimidating these little guys.

The goblins don't take much convincing, they know how their boss takes to failure. If they are not stopped by any of the others, the two who were protecting Yeemik leave quickly, but Fizbin is slow to leave, obviously deep in thought.

Everyone will get one inspiration point for wonderful role-playing through the cave
Nov 11, 2015 8:33 pm
Kama first orders the three goblins to also pack as much of their looted spoils onto the litter. The half-orc inspects items that are more valuable to either the party, or the town of Phandalin.

OOC: Assuming that whatever coinage we've recovered is also going onto the litter, or in Wish's pockets (is someone keeping track of how much?). Kama isn't bothering with the money at this point, as there are other matters to attend to.

The vast majority of the supplies are printed with the blue lion symbol of the Lionshield Coster (A trading company that's recently set up in Phandalin). The rest of the supplies are dirty clothing and spoiled food that the goblins haven't bothered to clean up.
Nov 11, 2015 8:46 pm
Kama tries to get as much of the supplies from the Lionshield Coster onto the litter. He is mindful that Sildar takes precedence, and will leave whatever cannot be ported in the cave.

Actually, he has an idea.

"Why don't we bring one of these gobbos with us, up to the town?" he suggests. "Have them guide the owners of these supplies back to this hideout for recovery?" That'd certainly lighten the load for the trip.

Hollow makes no objections to lettin the goblins go, but she watches them leave with concern written plainly on her face. She waits for the others at the mouth of the cave clearly eager to get back to the wagon.
Nov 12, 2015 2:14 am
"Gundren's dead then?" I'm half listening while impatiently tapping my foot. All of this talk. Mind-numbing.
Nov 12, 2015 2:48 am
"If he is, we're probably not getting paid," says Kama. "Personally, I want to find and rescue him if he's still alive, payment be damned. Someone obviously targeted him and his map."

The half-orc orders the goblins to port the litter with Sildar and a few supplies from the Lionshield Coster. They join up with Hollow at the cave entrance. "Then again, we did find a few spoils of war in this hideout. That would probably be more than enough for you?"

"Wish!" calls out Kama. "You got everything?"
Nov 12, 2015 3:54 am
"If Gundren is smart he obfuscated the map. Any pickpocket may have grabbed it in passing. He wouldn't want to lose his windfall that way, they are probably trying to torture him to get the information now.. Either way, I want to know if he is or not, and the people of Phandolin will want to know who will be moving into the area, at least."

Almost as an after thought, Hollow leads the wolves over to the fresh goblin corpses indicating that they should eat.

"Maybe that will keep the goblin population in check."

With that she makes her way back to the wagon. When she sees Seipora they quickly embrace and then Hollow exchanges a few mental words with Jozin and Cyril. The dead horses have been moved off the road.
Nov 12, 2015 8:18 am
"Gundren is not just my boss; he's my friend, and I want to find out what happened to him - rescue him, if I can - the same way I would want to rescue any of you." That made clear, Wish sets his gear aside for a moment and dives into the stream again, bathing the blood and sweat from his body. When he emerges, he shapes water to dry himself. Gathering up his equipment once more, he replies to Kama's question: "Yes, I'm ready! We can come back later for the goods, or tell the people who own this stuff - the Lionshield, did you say, Sildar? - where it is so they can get it." (from the map, I'm imagining it as at a large stack of crates, at least one wagon load's worth)

Assuming no further incident, Wish accompanies everyone back to the wagon and from thence continues the journey toward Phandalin.
(in other words, that's it for me; I'm ready to screen wipe to the next sequence, as it seems we're preparing to do)
Nov 12, 2015 2:38 pm
The stack of crates is quite large, looks like they looted a whole wagonload

The wolves eat happily for a few moments, until they see that Hollow is leaving. They bound over to her side and follow back to the wagon. Seipora and the ex-cultists are a bit uncomfortable around them for a while, until it becomes clear that they're not going to attack
