Gameplay - The Dragon Who Asked Too Much

Oct 15, 2019 12:35 am
The next day passes quickly. As you recover your wounds, friends and family of those who fought in the war pester you with questions about the fate of those they loved. Apparently, there were humans involved as well, although from your vantage you saw little of them. Still, each mother and spouse of a combatant feels the need to hear it directly. By the end of the day, you are preparing for another bout of inquiries as the supper hour nears. But you hear something, a whisper of miles, and quietly grabbing your things, move to the upstairs of the inn. There, the best pixie of all is waiting for you. MystWynd!

"Whew, I've been yelling for hours (it feels like). We have to go. Pananthys wants you to go to the tribute cave."

The brass dragon guardian of the valley, takes her payment in art and craft of the village, and these items are left in a special cave not overly far from the village.

You find yourselves, possibly relieved from the sad implorings of the villagers, eager to visit with the huge dragon, and perhaps her wyrmling Zoboanth, as well.

Climbing onto the rear balcony you find an uneasy climb to the ground and the hippogriffs waiting for you. Mounting, they jump quietly into the air and you fly off.

Scarce minutes later, instead of the hours it took to walk, your fierce mounts screech their cries and land outside the cave. You, too, can feel the presence, the undeniable draconic might.

Gingerly stepping inside, you find yourselves in a comfortably warm cave. The Dragon mistress sits at the far end, sitting not unlike a cat, although her head is lowered on its long neck due to the ceiling height.

"Interlopers, you came to my call. For that another thank you is added to the long list of my gratitude. A list that will only grow. Before I impose upon you once more, I will do my best to answer any questions you must have."
Oct 15, 2019 2:03 am
Garth bows.

I have no questions, other than how one so might was captured. Is there someone out there with that kind of power.
Oct 15, 2019 3:03 am
Hehsh walks hesitantly forward. "I want to know where I came from. I am like you but different. When I first met Zoboanth, it was the first time I saw someone like myself. Later on, I found that I could speak and read a language I never knew I knew. How? Do you know who could have left me in the woods?"
Oct 17, 2019 6:41 pm
Hasan stays stoic but in awe, keeping his mouth quite he awaits his new task just thankful the town is safe(r) now.
Oct 17, 2019 8:03 pm
Ruby likewise stays respectively quiet, but anyone looking will notice her pleased-as-peach grin at the visual reminder of their liberation.
Oct 17, 2019 9:09 pm
The dragon blows out in a huff, flames tickling the edge of her lips. "I was lured into a trap, with that infernal magic netting that rendered me incapable of moving. I do not know who made it, lest I would ensure that they learned a lesson in meddling in the affairs of dragons. I have hidden the net, and woe be to those who go looking."

To Hehsh, she says, "I know much about you, young one. It was with my agreement that you were placed with the druids of Albionii. You have the blood of dragons running through you, as one of your true parents was a Bronze dragon and the other of a mortal race. As to why, this is not my secret to share. For that, you will need to seek out your father, the wyrm Mordenth."
Oct 17, 2019 11:38 pm
Hehsh's frills flare in shock. "Where is he?"
Oct 18, 2019 1:04 am
Panantyss leans her head closer on her long sinewy neck. Her nictating eyelids close once, and she hisses, "I am sssso glad you assssked."

She draws back, sitting even more regally. "My mate, Veringvox, is missing. I suspect the Vermilion Reavers, but cannot be certain. Mordenth feared that he was being hunted, and I have grown to believe that these events are related. Find the wyrm Mordenth and find out what he knows. Then find Veringvox and free him. I promise you rewards worthy of the tasks, but more importantly, you will be greatly bolstering the defenses of these lands. I assure you, the Empress will not be as easily defeated as her warband in the desert was."

She sighs, as if about to do something distasteful. "Agree and I will share what I know."
Oct 18, 2019 3:14 am
I have sworn to protect these lands. If helping you does that, then I consider it a win win situation. I am in.
Oct 18, 2019 3:21 am
"An Empress? Will there be more war?"
Oct 18, 2019 6:38 am
Hehsh nods silently, his gaze intense and unwavering.
Oct 18, 2019 3:23 pm
Hasan nods, "I will do what I can to protect my town."
Oct 21, 2019 8:40 pm
Pananthys closes her eyes cat like, seeming grateful.

"Mordenth can be found in the independent city of Blackwater. He maintains an elven persona of da'Norto Illianstar, whose reputation is as colorful as his name. Find Mordenth, and then tell him that he and I met in a thunderstorm under a full moon, and he will assist you as he would me."

There is a clambering outside the cave, and a dwarf stalks in from the night, lither than you would suspect.

Qralloq sent a note to Adam
Oct 21, 2019 9:56 pm
OOC: Mountain dwarves consider anything that lives in caves and prevents evil creatures descending into their mines a natural ally. But their bond with metallic dragons goes beyond this. The dwarven debts, accumulated over eons, to these dragons is deeper than any shaft - and dwarves always repay their debts. Like all important debts - they’re written in red. There was never a question of whether the Cloudsea mine would come to Pananthy’s aid, but who they would send on the hippogriff.

Mavis shivers, her hands visibly shaking from the flight induced fear. She wipes the tears, wrung from hours of screwed up eyes, from her cheeks. She starts to speak, babbling, the words tumbling out of her.

"‘ow do. I’m on mi sen, ‘cos we’d nowt but the one flying ‘oss"

Mavis’s brain catches up his her mouth, and reminds her that her thick dwarven ‘cludsi’ accent is hardly an appropriate greeting for the grand dragon.

She tries again, this time with more decorum...
"Ah, Umm.. Cloudsea ‘eard call, O noble Pananthys, and ahm ‘ere to lend hand, as best as can any’ow. Umm.. magnificent one"
...not entirely successfully.

Mavis bows to the dragon so deeply that her back-slung crossbow nearly slides over her head. She rearranges herself and turns to the others bowing (less deeply).
Oct 22, 2019 12:47 am
As a Forge Cleric, Garth has a natural respect for dwarves.

Garth bows in return.

Greetings brother. May your forge burn bright.
Oct 22, 2019 4:13 am
"I have no idea what she's saying." She whispers to Hehsh.

Ruby returns the bow, figuring it must be a cultural thing. "Hello. I'm Ruby, the flying fist of the coast, and eater of souls, at least that's what they keep telling me."
Oct 22, 2019 4:37 am
Heshsh whispers back. "Me neither. It sounds like she has an orcish accent." To Hasan he whispers, "Remember our people skills and don't point your crossbow at her like you did me the first time we met." Aloud he says "My name is-wait. Who calls you the eater of souls? I don't call you that. Hasan do you call her that?"
Oct 22, 2019 5:48 am
"The kids do. And a...bard? My memory of the other night is hazy, but I'm pretty sure that's when it started. Why, what do they call you?" Ruby never was one for social etiquette.
Oct 22, 2019 7:06 am
Mavis, relieved that introductions are out the way, steps to join the group.

Her flustered, flight-addled mind trying to commit names to memory. Sandra, back at the Cloudsea, told her that when meeting new people one should try and picture their name alongside a representation of them.

So, we have Ruby, eater of souls. Okay, picture a small hard ruby. Red tunic, red ruby.
Did the dragonborn say their name was "Wait"? Or was that an interjection? Probably best wait for introductions. It wouldn't do to call "Wait!" if they were ambushed.
She searches her memory. Did she get other names? Did she give hers?
This isn't working. Oh well, nowt to be done about it now - maybe later when they brew up.

She nods at Garth returning his greeting.
"An' ore allus be pure."
Which is as close to the formally correct "And your ore always be pure" as she'll get until her nerves are under control.

As she reaches the group she quickly confides, "A'reet. Ah'm Mavis", and turns her attention to Pananthys.

OOC: Don't worry. Mavis's accent will soften. I've just decided that one of her character traits is that she lapses into a Yorkshire dialect in times of stress.

"I've never called you that either. You'll have to tell us these bardic stories how that name came to be then Ruby."
"Greetings, I'm Hasan with the City Guard."

"I have gifts for you, rewards for my rescue and to assist you in the deeds to come."

She offers each of you the choice or either a magical weapon or a magical armor (make your choice of base type or weapon or armor and I'll tell you what magic item she gives you), other than Ruby who already has such a weapon, whom she offers a Robe of Billowing (billows at will).

Garth bows low.

You are as generous as you are powerful. If it pleases you, a staff would be my preferred choice. If you have none, then armour or a crossbow would work as well.
OOC:
For a sorcerer...ring, wand, boots, gloves, Cape, cloak. Any of those.
Oct 23, 2019 3:18 am
OOC:
I'll think of something for the sorcerer then. I have an idea.
Oct 23, 2019 4:50 am
OOC:
Pearl of power is good choice imo.
"Thank you your dragon-ness, I shall use this wisely." Ruby bows respectfully, already excited to try out this robe.
Oct 23, 2019 5:45 am
Mavis hangs back, feeling like she's gatecrashed a private celebration. She also feels vicarious pride, such gifts! What a heroic party of adventurers she has joined to deserve gifts such as these, and from such a noble dragon.

She approaches Ruby, admiring the robe and casting a professional eye over the rare dyes used in its construction.

"Eeh, that looks champion on ye, Ruby. Oh aye, if looks could kill then tha'd not need other weaponry."
OOC:
Does that sound creepy? I hope not. I was aiming for "girl talk", but I’m not sure I got it right. There again, Mavis spend her days creeping along tunnels to deal silent death to monsters - small talk probably isn’t her greatest gift. I know - I’ll roll for it
OOC:
Ouch! That wasn’t a nice roll, was it?
Mavis attempts a smile, but her face translates the unfamiliar request into a leer. Mavis, realising she’s spent a lot of time staring at the stitching on the robe’s chest, snaps her eyes back to meet Ruby’s gaze. She compounds her faux pas with a friendly wink.
OOC:
Let’s never try that again. What happens when newbies first try out the dice roller? 3’s happen, that’s what. Sigh.

Garth, Ruby, and Hehsh have chosen.

Hasan and Mavis (yes, she includes you)?
Oct 23, 2019 2:54 pm
Mavis's eyes are drawn to a plain, dull, dark dagger. Its slender, slightly curving blade and narrow quillion make it look like a long claw or spur.
Nodding thanks to Pananthys, she takes it, intrigued by it's lack of adornment.
Turning the blade, Mavis catches glimpses of runes running down the blade. They seem to picked out in the same metal but textured differently. A different alloy?
There's a slight groove running down the blade which, in Mavis's experience, means that it was intended to be used with poison.

Although Mavis isn't a smith, she's still a dwarf and she searches her memory for who might have created a blade such as this.
OOC:
Rolls history = 7. Not great.
Not drow. If 'twere drow then she'd expect to see it overly decorated with spiders.
It doesn't have the sturdy, chunkiness of the dwarves or duergar.
Svirfneblin? Why would the deep, secret gnomes of the underdark need an unreflective dagger in a world without light?

No, it's a mystery to Mavis, but a pleasing one.

Nodding thanks again to Pananthys she walks back to the group admiring the craftsmanship of the weapon.
OOC:
It's a +1 dagger. The text above is just for flavour.

The dragon uses telekinesis to move the items to each of you. A robe for Ruby, a pearl stone for Hehsh, a hand crossbow for Hasan, a 8 inch carved serpent for Garth, and the dagger for Mavis.

"Go forth, and use these items with honor in the defense of innocent life. Much rests on your shoulders, but please know I, too, will be working in defiance of tyranny. Together, we might rewrite destiny."

The snake wraps itself around Garth's arm with the head of the snake appearing to drink from the silver inlaid in his tattoo. He stares at it in wonder.

Thank you for this amazing gift, I will endeavor to use it for good.

These new items will require attunement, basically an hour of attention and contact, save Ruby's robe which just works.

Mavis recites a formal goodbye in Dwarvish, and turns to the party.

Does this party have a leader? Mavis, a stickler for discipline and order, wonders
I suppose Hassan as a city guard has the most authority. Perhaps he’s waiting for us to signal our readiness to leave.

Reet! No sense in faffin’ ‘bout. Off t’ City of Blackwater was it?

Mavis turns to leave, then turns back, somewhat abashed,

Errr.. does anyone have foggiest ‘ow we get there?

Garth has been staring at his gift and only half listening to the conversation. Then something tweaks him back to attention.

Calm down, I don't think a minute to think will cause the end of days. While it is normally an arduous journey North along the coast, across the Isthmus of storms and then and then to the northern coast of the inland sea.

He looks around and continues on.

However, using the hippogriffs we can do it in 3 days. If we leave early in the morning we could rest the first night in Mourning Town. A quiet place where we should have no problems. The second night would be Great Delta, a much rougher town. Keep your hands on your purse there. Then at the end of the third day, we should make Blackwater.

I am not weighed down with gold, so I am not sure if we could sell some of the stack of weapons and armour that we seem to have.
We will need 30 pieces of gold for lodging and food for the journey. Only high end inns have stabling for hippogriffs
Oct 23, 2019 10:21 pm
On hearing the plan, all of Mavis’s instincts are to raise objections. How bad could the Isthmus of Storms be? What if we walked, like, really really fast? No, I mean really fast.

But in her heart Mavis knows that she can’t disgrace the honour of the Cloudsea before they even start this phase of the adventure. She can’t admit how much flying terrifies her; that she spent the entire journey here with her eyes screwed shut, praying to every God she knew (including a few that she might have made up).

Sure, on landing they’d probably tease her about the way she screamed the whole way, but the key point was they would have to land to do that- which meant they wouldn’t have spiralled into the ground from a thousand feet.

Ashen faced, lower lip quivering, Mavis speaks:
Cloudsea gave me fifty gold coins, if that’ll ‘elp.

You know that you won't be able to get good prices in Allaya's Cove. It is too small for the need for surplus weapons. However, Mourning Town is large enough and a trading town to boot.
Oct 24, 2019 7:55 pm
Shall we get our gear together and get in the air?

Garth bows again to the dragon and turns to leave.
Oct 24, 2019 9:37 pm
You gather your new things, and return to the hippogriffs. You notice that they look well fed and rested, especially Mavis' who shows no signs of the prior long flight. It isn't that the hippogriff is particularly resilient, but more that its strength has been restored somehow. In addition, the hippogriffs are all wearing full saddles now, which should make your journey much safer. There are places to tie your gear behind the saddle if you wish to do so.

Eager to be off, the hippogriffs snap playfully at you, but lower a shoulder to allow you to mount up.

A man in wilderness clothes can be seen sitting in the forest nearby, your saddler undoubtedly, as he rolls a leather rein around his arm. He nods to you and continues to care for his gear.
Oct 24, 2019 10:25 pm
Men have marched to the scaffold with more enthusiasm than Mavis shows walking to her mount.

Some dwarves have traveled far and wide, not Mavis, she’s traveled far and deep. Her whole wide world didn’t have the first "w". Mavis is a traditionalist, a proper delver. She’d never liked the idea of wide open skies above her, let alone below her.

She approaches the side of the beast with trepidation and nimbly mounts it, as though riding hippogriffs came as naturally to dwarves as singing about gold.

Upon exiting the cave Ruby looks for the first chance to leap onto a boulder and cause her robe to billow as she stands tall.

When they reach their mounts she rushes up to hers, scratching them under the chin. "To think I'd be traveling once again, it's kind of exciting actually."
Oct 25, 2019 6:27 am
"Where did you travel before this?"
Oct 25, 2019 1:07 pm
On seeing Ruby’s robe billow majestically around her small frame, Mavis sits up and makes the Obama ‘not bad’ face. She then hunkers back down, grips her harness tightly, checks her tray is in the upright position, and is ready for take off.
Oct 25, 2019 5:25 pm
Ruby hops on her mount, getting situated. "Uproot, it's a halfling settlememt up north. Well it was, before...it's not around anymore." Ruby has a hint of sadness as she doesn't explain what exactly happened "I traveled with this older man Jorge for a while, taught me everything I know, well not everything. We went...east first? Maybe directly south for a while. He settled down somewhere, and I ended up here."
Oct 25, 2019 6:15 pm
Garth approaches the saddler.

Will you be coming with us? If not, will the inns have someone trained to do it? I have some training with horses, but not with these fine creatures.
Oct 25, 2019 6:29 pm
The saddler waves you away. "Nah, a saddle's a saddle, but don't tell yon missus, she thinks my stars rise with the sun!"

A faint rumbling can be heard from the cave.

Garth is suddenly walking through a battlefield. The members of his regiment lay dead. There are scores of dead goblins, his friends had killed ten for each of their own, but they were vastly outnumbered.
As he walks through the rows of the dead he is wracked with guilt. Why did he survive when all these worthy men died? What made him special?
Then out of the mist came his father. Maybe he was dead after all. His father had died years ago, maybe he was here to take him to Gond personally.

Father, it is good to see you, even if you must be a spectre.

His father laughs and approaches.

I may be dead, but I am no spectre, boy. You're head always was in the clouds.

It sure sounded like his father, that was one of his usual complaints.

I am here because I could feel your self pity and hear your whinging in the grave. Look son, you have been around soldiers all your life, you know that death comes for us all. It came for me, it came for them, and it will surely come for you. There is no point in trying to figure these things out, you just strap on your armour and do your job.

Garth knows all that of course.

I know father, but the sheer chance that I would live through all this.

I don't know what to tell you son. Maybe it was Gond. I do know that for whatever reason you were saved, it will be world changing. I was always proud of you Garth, and I am sorry that I never expressed that to you.

Garth starts to reply to his father when the scene starts to get misty again and he is suddenly back on his hippogriff in the clouds. He is not sure if it was a dream, a vision, or a message from beyond...but he feels better none the less.
OOC:
Whatever set up I use will pale compared to the beauty set up I got.

Ruby, you feel the saddle start to slip sideways. You could try an acrobatic fix in mid air, or break off for a minute to land and tighten it.
Oct 26, 2019 3:39 am
OOC:
That was pretty slick!
Ruby peeled off from the group, looking for Garth who seemingly vanished from the air. Suddenly she spots him once again, not entirely sure what transpired. This fixation is what led to her being unaware her saddle was slipping sideways until she suddenly finds herself yanked to the side, and she's left hanging onto the saddle by her hand, as it's currently rotated about 90 degrees clockwise from it's normal position. "Catch me!" She shouts to her hippogriff, releasing her grip and free falling.

The hippogriff catches on and alters it's course to position just below Ruby as the two fall. Ruby quickly pulls out her staff and uses it to knock the saddle back to it's original position, rather difficult considering she has to work against the wind, but it gets done. Next she pushes herself down, colliding with the saddle. Safely back on the two ascend back to the group, and just far back enough to notice the harpies who are about to ambush everyone...

Hasan hears a twinge of what sounds like music coming near the foggy area Garth exited from. Seeing Ruby now right herself on the mount Hasan tightens his grip onto his own for the fear of falling. At the howling speed of the hippogriff maneuvers though the air like a fish in water.

As quickly as they came the seemed to disappear just as quickly. Garth hearing the soft lulls and sweet tones seem to not notice the threat he was in until it was to late. Three of the Harpies quickly latch on to him pulling him from his mount and off into the sky.

Hasan can hear Ruby start to say something as he too notices the threat they are now in. Tightening his grip and pulling the reins he breaks out of the flying formation to try and stave off the possible attack.

Suddenly Hasan hears a struggle and more wings flapping then in flock he's currently with. He peers over his shoulder to see a blanket of winged persons, Some playing harmonious instruments others wielding unusual weapons. Bones? He thinks, No, perhaps just some odd clubs. He draws his crossbow and does his best to aim. Firing into the flock of Harpies does little to disperse them. He cannot get the grasp of air combat having to hold on and attack. His speed of firing seems to be significantly slower then normal. If only I weren't in the air.
Closing the gap between his traveling companions and the threat Hasan continues to unleash round after round. Few to hit only to enrage the incoming Harpies. They now are becoming more aggressive, the music seems to stop as they increase in the speed of their advancement. The singing continues to surround the flock from the background.

Hasan determined to show Hehsh and Ruby that he can be relied upon during his previous missions and letdowns he charges by the incoming hostile. Now giving more care to speed over accuracy as he begins to rain down crossbow bolts at a speed unknown before. Many find their mark as only a couple of their flock fall from the sky. Realize this may be more then a one man job. Hasan clasps back the reins of the hippogriff and race back to gain reinforcements.

"Help!" he cries out as he approaches the group. "It seems we may be under attack."
He looks about. "Wheres Garth? The group looks about to see that his hippogriff flies void of its jockey. "The must have gotten Garth?! Quickly!"

With the other in tow, they start to swoop into the flock raining magic bolts and normal bolts alike. The flock of harpies begin to thin enough to see a glint of something being carried in the middle. "There! In the middle. That must be his armor!" Hasan shouts back to Ruby and Mavis. "We'll keep them distracted while you go get him."
Hasan slows his barrage of bolts only enough to speak.
"Focus our attacks" Hasan calls out to Hehsh. "Maybe we can drive them off if we start to whittle their numbers?"

As Hehsh and Hasan begin to focus fire swooping down on the flock. Ruby and Mavis take the opening slaming their hippogriffs into the two that had Garth. Releasing their grip Garth begins to fall Ruby calls out that "they have a problem". What now?! It was simple get Garth.. Hasan thinks, then is quickly remedied as he sees the glint of armor quickly descend into the area below. "Hehsh hold them off!" Hasan says a small prayer as he clasps the reins and dives after Garth. Garth begins to yell as he comes to his sense as the singing now begins to diminish.

Hasan clumsily maneuvering the mount to grab Garth. Hasan fumbles loosing his grip too almost dismounting himself. Grabbing hold of Garth Hasan quickly pulls him to seat as they come back up.

"Its Working!" Hehsh shouts as he continues his barrage of magic. The Harpies seem to be doing swapping places as the magic continues until a command is given near a shrieking tone. They begin to retreat with such haste.

"I suggest we land so we can remount proper like." Hasan suggests.

So i realized as I'm typing up the last bit of this that it could have gone way better but i didn't really feel like retyping it all out. so sorry for the semi bad story.

Next plug A flock of ravens, circling around and around a fixed point on the ground. An unusually persistent dust devil, playing havoc with a traveling caravan.

The party continues on. After a fair distance they notice a flock of birds in the distance. Normaly this would be nothing worth noting, accept something on the wind smells off to Hehsh. Like lightning mixed cinnamon. He convinces the party to detour and investigate.

It turns out to be a murder of crows, cawing above a caravan that seems to be in bad shape, although there is no apparent cause for their distress. Carts have come free of their donkey's, barrels of goods have tumbled free, and it seems like every spare length of rope has turned into a tangle. Accidents and mishaps plague the caravan, and everytime something goes wrong there is always a dust devil.

The party lands and tries to help but it is more of the same. Hehsh is confused. This all seems familiar some how. When a dust devil blinds him in a spray of oddly colored dust that will not rub out, he begins to understand. He's seen this before.

The crows pester him, so he uses magic to create mirror images of himself to confuse them. When he sees ropes spring up by themselves as if they were serpents, he wrangles them with mage hand. When five dust devils turn into a single massive gale, Hehsh matches it with the fury of a lightning bolt, sent to the heavens.

"Come now. I know you are here. There is no need to trouble these people any more." Hehsh calls out. Out of nowhere, a small boy appears. Pale white skin and platinum hair that shoots up into an unatural spike. An air genasi and a sorcerer to boot. One who Hehsh understand is just beginning to understand his powers but not the consequences.

"Caught me did you?" says the genasi. "I like your tricks. No harm meant. I was just bored and though I would have some harmless fun."

"If fun is what you want, I know some pixies who love your sort of fun. They are in the next valley over."

"Pixies you say? Well there is a group that knows how to appreciate a good prank!" With that he spins away into the wind. Hopefully, the pixies will teach the boy something about consequences.

Next Plug for Mavis; Mavis, the party is flying along minding our own business, when elven eagle riders fly out of nowhere. Dancing lights of red and blue flash through the air. It's the Sky Patrol! These fuckers are pulling us over. None of us are elves and these small-forest elf cops are notorious for giving out of towners a hard time, particularly dwarfs. WHAT DO YOU DO?

Deep dwarves have a profound respect for law and rules. A world where life depends that every prop undergoes thorough inspection, and every tool is authorised for suitability, cultivates a strict adherence to regulations. Deep dwarves are surrounded by law in the same way that fish are surrounded by water - if it's absent then life is brief.

Mavis cautiously pulls on the reins bringing the hippogriff to a hovering halt, noting the elven officers approach.
Wood-elven officers are considered unique amongst the watches, as they eschew swords and crossbows, armed with nothing more than silly hats and wooden sticks. This leads many races to believe that wood-elven officers are less violent than other officers. This is wrong. Lacking permission to use swords, they've elevated chucking-suspects-down-the-stairs and slamming-heads-into-cell-doors into a martial art.

Ruby is approached by Constable Tranquillity;
Hehsh by Constable Serenity;
Garth by Constable Placidity;
and Hassan by Sergeant Responsibility.
Mavis is assigned Constable Brutality.

Oh great, thinks Constable Brutality seeing the dwarf, a bloody schist-kicker.

Brutality had recently been told to attend a course on non-elven race relations. He'd begged off on the grounds that all his relations were wood elves.

Placing her hands upwards in her lap, Mavis politely waits for the officer to come alongside.

'ow do. Is owt up officer? Summat amiss? Ruby asks innocently.

Fazed by Mavis's thick accent, Constable Brutality tries the watch officer's universal language...
DO - YOU - SPEAK - COMMON?
... he shouts slowly.

EEEE - THAT - WERE - COMMON - THA' - CLOTH-EARED - HA'P'ORTH. Ruby shouts slowly back.

The constable's hand reaches for his truncheon.
What did that racist little rock goblin say about my ears?!

Constable Brutality knows, and uses, a thesaurus of racial terms of abuse. If anyone complains, he moans that people today are too quick to take offence. But if anyone should suggest that wood elves might be less perfect, he's been known to become the snowiest of snowflakes. Perhaps he complains that people are too quick to take offence, because it leaves less for him.

The anger paralysing Constable Brutality is interrupted by Sargent Responsibility, bringing her eagle alongside.

Is there a problem Constable?

Got a villain Ma'am. errr.... Brutality thinks fast ....drunk in charge of a mount, Ma'am

Evidence? The sergeant's eyebrow arch. Her eyebrow was very good at arching. Constable Brutality gave it lots of practice.

He's a rock muncher Ma'am Clearly satisfied with that this is now a closed case.

If you mean she's a member of the dwarven community, then that's not actually a crime Constable.

If you say so Ma'am replies Brutality doubtfully.
Constable Brutality has always assumed that "short sentence" meant a mandatory punishment for being less that 5'2".

The seargeant turns to Mavis
Hey hup lass. Where are thar going, and has thar been boozing my old matie? Gor blimey. - torturing the dwarven dialect to the point where even Dick Van Dyke's cockney would have begged for mercy.

Nay, lass. Lookin' to get to Mourning t'n. Weirdly, Mavis is less offended by Brutality's overt racism than being patronised in a mangled version of her own dialect, but co-operates nonetheless.

Very well. Don't let us delay you further. Don't forget your seat-belt. The sergeant nods Mavis towards her party hovering ahead.

Seat-belt?
Mavis looks around to discover extra straps on her harness.
Seat-belt! So that's why nobody else had to cling to their hippogriff's mane for dear life.

Mavis fastens herself to the saddle, nods politely to the officers and continues to meet her friends.

Sargent Responsibility takes out her notebook.

Constable - I'm recommending that you attend a course on dwarven awareness.

Yes Ma'am. Thank you Ma'am says Brutality brightly
Dwarven awareness will come in useful ma'am. Sometimes it's difficult to spot the little buggers.

That was fun.

See y’all in Mourning Town!
Oct 31, 2019 2:07 am
OOC:
Agreed. I'm gonna steal that trick.
Oct 31, 2019 4:20 pm
The exciting and entirely confusing flight to Mourning Town comes to a close later in the day when your hungry and tired hippogriffs beeline without direction for a particular inn. Alighting in the rear yard, they snap and caw at a stable hand, who with practiced familiarity dodges their playful anger, helps you from your saddles. "Welcome to The Aerie," he says loud enough to be heard, dodging a clawed kick from Hasan’s hippogriff. "Two gold each, and we’ll take care of both you and these beauties. Got baths, a seafood roast that’s almost ready to be served, and enough mead to swim in. Go on in, I’ll unsaddle these and get them fed and brushed."

The stable hand shoos you inside, brooking no questions and offering no further information. You grab your gear tied to the saddles and enter the inn. The décor reminds you of open skies, with light walls shaded by lighter spots that are like clouds. The walls lighten around a roaring hearth with flames bright enough to make a fair impression of the sun. A number of games are being played, all involving clay figures on a circular board. A roar goes up as one man twirls his moustache and tips over his last piece, a dragon painted silver.

A plump woman waves you over to an empty table that she grabs some mugs from and begins attacking with a rag. "Over here, come on, welcome, welcome."

Hahah dwarven awarness :D, I think you put Ruby's name in there for yours?
Oct 31, 2019 5:03 pm
Mavis totters over, twisting and stretching her back as she walks; her legs leaden and back stiff after the long flight.

She smiles warmly at the plump lady.
'ow do? I hear that tha' has baths. Hot baths are they? It were ever so parky on flight here. Has tha' rooms for t' five of us?

She turns to her Hassan.
Hot bath t' take chill off, followed by fish supper. Put feet up and grab bite afore we go exploring proper like. What's tha' think Hassan?

"Well lets eat and get clean yes. Perhaps a nice rest in a proper bed before exploring I think. He replies as he begins to yawn.
Oct 31, 2019 5:23 pm
After years in the military, Garth knows enough to take a beer and a good meal whenever they are offered.

As tempting as a hot bath sounds, I think I will take care of the inside before the outside. I will take a mead please and some of that roast the stable hand mentioned, please.

Garth looks around.

This is a beautiful place, and well kept.
OOC:
Does Garth recognize the game everyone is playing?
Oct 31, 2019 5:30 pm
Garth recognizes the game, a favourite with sailors and soldiers alike. The rules are simply, more like checkers than chess, but there is a strong wagering element that often results in the game devolving into a drinking contest and inevitable singing. The goal in the game is to move a game piece into a space occupied by one of the other players pieces, with the contest resolved entirely by opposed six-sided dice rolls - these dice rolls are where the gambling occur, with bets on win, lose, or tie.
Oct 31, 2019 8:07 pm
Ruby is glad to be off of her mount, all that flying has her feeling rather stiff. After a bit of stretching she feels well enough to move, but can't stifle a yawn first. The prospect of food and drink is enticing enough to keep her from resting, this whole diplomat job has some benefits.

Once inside Ruby smells the air and observes what everyone is enjoying, taking mental stock of what's on the menu. "Why hello. I will take...one of each please."

Ruby listens for anyone (or even a bard) discussing tales of a certain powerful halfling who courageously fought against a horde of hobgoblins, growing stronger with every foe they felled.
Oct 31, 2019 8:59 pm
After he eats, Garth will see if there is an open seat at a game, preferably with soldiers. He is not too concerned with the winning and losing, he wants to pick up info on what they might face on the next leg of their journey.
Oct 31, 2019 9:02 pm
Hehsh will sit down with everyone having mead. Seafood roast you say? I've never had seafood before.
Nov 1, 2019 12:35 am
Mavis is lead into the upstairs where a bath is brought to temperature with hot rocks. A small tray of fragrant soaps and oils is placed beside, along with a stack of thick towels.

As Mavis heads off for a bath, you're brought a platter of fish for the table, mostly roasted with some sauces to accompany. She also leaves you a pitcher of mead and a bowl of grainy, nutty buns and another bowl of mixed roasted vegetables.

Garth finds a table between gsmes and is immediately welcomed in and handed a box of figures to arrange. He finds the conversation easy, starting with the usual last campaign question. Of course, no one asks which side you fought on, to avoid fights.
Nov 1, 2019 2:03 am
Sides only matter to the generals, am I right?
Nov 1, 2019 8:11 am
As the chamberperson leaves, Mavis nods towards the soap, oils and towels.
Am I allowed to use those? She asks nervously
After giving a confused nod, the chamberperson leaves.

Mavis stands back to consider the bath.
Last year her Sandra had suggested that they go 'up top' to visit a spa. There was the inevitable spa/spar homophonic confusion that was bound to happen when the skywalkers name something after crystalline rocks. After that was resolved, Mavis had ruled that spas sounded like something for humans and elves, and (to Sandra's disappointment) the matter was closed. Fancy baths aren't for dwarves - Mavis had home-rank, and Mavis had ruled it.

Mavis steps forward and sniffs the soap. It smells like sweet flowers and fruits, not ash and fat. Curious, Mavis runs her finger over the soap. Soft, like talc-schist, not gritty, no granite dust.

Is this the adventuring life?
Taking advantage of such luxury feels like betraying Sandra. Chewing her bottom lip in inner turmoil, but shucking her clothes anyway, Mavis resolves to take Sandra to a spa if she gets back alive.

Settling into the hot bath, Mavis adds small amounts of each of the oils. Sniffing the soaps in turn, she picks one. If Mavis had more experience of the skyworld she'd have recognised the smell of bergamot, but to Mavis it just smells like how she imagines elven nobles would smell.
Mavis slides down, guiltily, to spend an hour in the hot bath.
OOC:
For the next 24 hours, any creatures with a strong sense of smell will have advantage on perception checks against Mavis.
Towelling herself off Mavis feels cleaner than she's ever felt before, but the nagging sense of betrayal leaves her conscience feeling a little dirty too.

Dressed, leaving the warhammer and backpack in the room, Mavis descends the stairs to meet the party, try the seafood and talk to the locals.
OOC:
intelligence check to see if she picks up on the morning/mourning homophone.
OOC:
Ugh. 13's ambiguous. I reckon not.

I'll add cha and insight rolls in case they're needed.

You all enjoy your meals, prepared simply but the freshness of the catch is startling, and seasoned just right to bring out the natural flavour.

Garth settles into the game and quickly is laughing with the soldiers as stories are told, usually of dalliances while on furlough, and a fondness for jokes about clever people being humiliated.

Mavis finds out that the town is indeed a homophone of Morning and Mourning, and means both to them. The great fireplace diorama in the inn is a testament to the sadness of the dawn, but more so of a legend. It seems that long ago, all of the children went missing and were never found alive. Their bodies were found high in a hill, apparently having committed suicide by drinking sleeping draughts to excess, for abuses at the hands of one of the town elders. The elder was tried and executed for his crimes, but even though all those involved are long dead, the town has never recovered from the sense of loss and their own blindness to what had been occurring. The anniversary of that grim discovery is celebrated as a time of quiet reflection.

As to Great Delta, this is a small city that squats on an old dried up river delta. While no river flows, save for flash floods, the delta proper is wide and the city squats on former islands. The bridges have gone to neglect as people can almost always just walk on the dry river bottom year round.

Hehsh is shocked by the disturbing tale. Who would have thought that these villages knew such troubles. He remembers the druids who raised him and always thought it strange that they lived apart from their kin. Perhaps there was wisdom in that decision. He thinks of it no more past sleep. Nothing puts Hehsh's mind at ease like a good meal and a warm bed.
Nov 5, 2019 3:54 am
After gambling for a while, Garth will buy a round for the soldiers and head to bed fairly early. Best to have a clear head when going in to the unknown.
Nov 5, 2019 7:20 am
When Mavis had arrived here her every instinct had shouted "Let's get ready to grumble!". After all, it was every dwarf's natural right, nay duty!, to complain that the beer was too weak, the food was too fancy, and the skysiders were 'nowt but soft topside nancies' - but the scented bath and the town's dark tale had rather taken the fire from her forge.

She quietly and slowly drinks at a table, bidding a good night to the retiring Garth and Hehsh. She considers the town - rich in luxurious baths and fine food, but with such tragedy at its core. It testified that these stoic humans had a natural nobility she hadn't imagined.

Contemplation over, finishing her drink, her prejudices somewhat chastened, Mavis bids good night to the barkeep and patrons. She too heads to bed.
Nov 5, 2019 5:38 pm
Hasan enjoys his meal. Feasting mostly on the breads while picking at the fish. "Such delicious food, I thank you for the meal." Hasan mentions to the barmaiden.

Hasan takes his leave to get some rest for the night attempting to recover from his riding escapades.
Nov 6, 2019 12:30 am
Ruby quite enjoys what the evening brings her. She eats, drinks, and relaxes as the lovely atmosphere overtakes her. She is a bit disappointed tales of their heroics aren't being spread far and wide, but she decides it isn't actually all that important. After all she still gets to enjoy herself without feeling like some celebrity.
OOC:
Qralloq did you see my last post on the previous page? It didn't have anything important just wanted to check if it was accidentally omitted.
Nov 6, 2019 12:52 am
OOC:
Oh yeah, I wanted to respond to that.
Ruby doesn't hear anything about individual halflings per se, but she does hear a few old fogies talking about some sort of desert skirmish. Apparently an army of ogres and giant kin were driven off by a warband of pixies (and a few minor assistants, baggage carriers, really). Detsils are sparse at the moment, and they're questioning what mad folk would even try and pass off such stories as news.
Nov 6, 2019 4:32 am
Before going to bed, Hehsh hears Ruby asking about rumors of halflings. He chuckles at the baggage carriers comment, and then uses minor illusion to make them think there drinks are empty, hopefully leading to them getting cut off by a waitress who does not want to over serve. "Don't worry "Eater of Souls." I'm sure your legend will grow in time."
Nov 6, 2019 6:08 am
"I was thinking of contributing to their stories myself. Ogre's are comparable to hobgoblin's right?" Already Ruby is imagining the battle where she jumped off of pixies and fell from 100 feet high to deliver a crushing blow to an ogre's eye, slaying it in one hit.
Nov 6, 2019 6:11 am
"Sure. They're basically cousins. Fully interchangeable from a narrative perspective."
Nov 6, 2019 9:49 pm
"Perfect." With confidence in every step Ruby makes her way to these fine gentlemen, regaling them with tales of the battle she (yes she!) was part of. Of the enormous army she and her companions had to face down, the devastating blow after blow of pernicious power inflicted unto them, and their sure defeat. Just as they were on the brink of destruction, they had gained "the dragon's blessing" smiting their foes with overwhelming force while their fallen troops had risen up to join the fray once more, it was truly a glorious day.
Nov 6, 2019 10:03 pm
The fogies enjoy Ruby's storytelling, thoroughly engaging in her presentation of the events. She gets that they enjoy the craft of storytelling more than the newsy bits, but they will pass it on faithfully, at least as best as they recall.
Nov 7, 2019 7:01 pm
When the talking is well and done Ruby decides to retire for the night, another busy day tomorrow and all that.
Nov 8, 2019 9:48 pm
After meals and baths and games, or baths and meals and games, or games and meals and baths, or however you arrange it, you each retire for the night.

That night, dreams come. You don't remember them, only that you awake, freezing. Your rooms are ice cold, despite the coals glowing in the fireplaces. Your breath fogs and you feel it, a dark presence, there behind you! No. Outside? You look, your eyes drawn to the east.

Somewhere a woman screams, heartbreaking sorrow. And the echo of laughter in the night sky. A flicker of light on some hillside. Impossibly far away, it is just a tiny blur, but you know. How could you not? Albionii, the unicorn. It beckons.

Do you refuse?

You wake. This time for real, you hope. But damn, it is cold in your room.
Nov 8, 2019 10:10 pm
When the group is gathered for breakfast, Garth notices that he is not the only one who looks a little troubled.

Did any of you dream about the unicorn?
Nov 8, 2019 11:52 pm
OOC:

OOC:
Who me? I think our DM had this one planned. "Mourning" town? Dead children? Dead children are like DM lego, they don’t pull them out unless they’re planning on building something.
Mavis is mildly surprised by Garth’s question, but not shocked.

Aye, I did. It’s sign, and no mistake.

She then turns sternly to Hassan.

’as thee gone soft in head Hassan? The gods send sign like that, and we do nowt ‘bout it? Eee lad, I know there’s rush on, but I’d never look ferther in face agin if ‘e ‘eard I knew bairns needed us an’ I walked on.

Mavis doesn’t want to offend Hassan, so she takes a deep breath, softens her tone and considers her next words carefully.

I know we ‘ave solemn quest an’ no time for faffin’, it does thee proud that y’ ‘ave tha’ focus on it. But I don’t see ‘ow we can walk on by.

She sits back with her arms folded across her chest. Mavis has said her piece, and now awaits its judgement.

Any ‘ow. That’s me two common’s worth. If there’s vote then I vote we ‘elp, but let’s wait for Ruby an’ Hehsh. If yous think different to us then I’ll bow to rank.

Ruby is at a loss for maybe half of Mavis's little speech. Still, she can improvise. "That was the first time I've ever dreamed of a unicorn, I doubt it was a coincidence, especially since we apparently all experienced it simultaneously. And I- Wait, you think the town is...SpoOoOkY?" Ruby flutters her fingers in front of her face, talking in a manner she thinks a scary ghost would.
Nov 9, 2019 6:12 am
"It was Albionii. The unicorn who aided us in the battle and the patron of the circle of druids who raised me. If she is asking for aid, we should help. In my dream, the call for help came from the east."
Nov 9, 2019 6:25 am
I agree. Hopefully it will be a short detour.
Nov 9, 2019 9:59 am
Mavis looks at Hassan expectantly.
She’s decided that he’s their leader and she must follow his decision - but surely a good leader listens to the opinions of the party.
Nov 9, 2019 12:59 pm
Seeing Ruby’s confusion, Mavis tries again.
It were a sign from gods. I say we act, and there’s no...
what was the skywalker word for faffing?
pro-crast-in-ating and de-bate-ing.
Gods! Even their words for faffing were a faff.
We do what our ferthers’ would ‘spect on us. But I’ll follow group decision with no mitherin’ errr... grumblin’

Mavis smiles at Ruby apologetically. She knows her grasp of the nobles’ common is a little dodgy, but she’s not sure which of her words are dialect.

"Ok, If that gets us out of this eerie place lets hop to it then."

Hasan shows a small visible shutter as a cold chill pierces his body.
Nov 11, 2019 9:36 pm
Mavis nodded to Hassan when she heard his decision. Their leader had reached the correct decision. Everything was as it should be.

I’ll just get us things. She headed off up to her room.

In the room Mavis mentally prepared for her first real day of adventuring in the skylands by following her personal pre-hunting rituals.
After donning and tightening her leathers, Mavis pulled the slip-tied leather cords holding the daggers on her right forearm and at the small of her back. There was the soft sound of steel drawn from leather as the daggers were removed, inspected, then re-sheathed. As Mavis re-tied the dagger’s slip knot on her back she considered the warhammer on the floor.

She’d found it in her pack shortly after leaving the Cloudsea. It was a gift from Sandra who always told her that she should have a more dwarven weapon.
Mavis had a great deal of respect for dwarven fighters. They stood firm, rooted to the earth, clutching the hammers and picks of their mining heritage, stubbornly defying anyone to try and move them - as if their lives were precious gold in a tight seam. You want them? We’ll make you work for them.

But that wasn’t Mavis’s way. She was as subtle and insidious as poisonous afterdamp. Silent, creeping, unexpected death in the dark.

Ritual completed Mavis shouldered her pack, but carried the warhammer. She headed downstairs to meet the party. She handed the hammer to Hassan.
Ye were lookin’ to trade weapons for gold here? Add this to collection. Dwarf made, should fetch reet good price.
Nov 11, 2019 10:36 pm
Did you want to try and sell your weapons before going off in search of mystery?

I don’t. Are we even tracking gold? I feel that stabling, bathing, dining and the room should have come to something.
Perhaps someone could roll a cha check for a quick sale, and we can skip the haggling, or deal with it later?
Mavis scans the faces of the party. She’s hoping that they act decisively, heroically - perhaps ask the inn to store their booty until they return.
She’d speak but she’s become quite self-conscious of her accent.
Hehsh burst out laughing for no reason after she last spoke, and the embarrassment is still a little raw in Mavis’s memory.

yes, since are here, we may as well take a couple of minutes to sell the surplus weapons, and change the funky gold coins into coins of the realm.

We will probably make up the time flying faster without the extra weight.

"Wait, you guys have stuff to sell? Lemme check." Ruby starts digging through her pack, pulling out (and placing back in): rope, a torch, several smooth rocks she discreetly places on the table, darts which she spins in her hand for fun, and a fairly nice looking bangle. "I guess there is...this?"
Nov 12, 2019 2:09 pm
It would be fairly obvious that someone is carrying around the big bag of armor and weapons mostly taken from hobgoblin patrols. See the Party Loot thread for an inventory.

Hehsh huddles with his compatriots before vender, getting the basics of haggling down. He's not sure he gets the finer points down, but he understands the basic idea. Make them take less of your money, while you get more of their money. It was a simple enough concept. Hehsh presented the parties spoils and the merchant named his price. "More," said Hehsh simply. His arms are crossed and he looks down on the man and growls idly. He repeats the process until a satisfactory price is reached.

Ruby's eyes bulge at the absolute pile of gold they now have. "That's a lot of money. I don't think I've ever seen so much in one place."
Nov 15, 2019 12:20 am
"Such a generous amount. Lets try to spend it wisely and not on frivolous trinkets." Hasan says as he stows the pouch in his pack in the attempts to forget it is there. "Are there any more stops we need to make before we head out west?"
Nov 15, 2019 2:43 am
Looking at the pile, Hehsh hesitiantly hands over the parties share. Like Ruby, he has never seen that much gold before and he is feeling the very draconic feeling of greed. When Hasan speaks up, he snaps out of it. "I would like to purchase some health potions. Just to be safe."

After spending a few hours haggling with merchants, unloading your war loot and buying supplies, you head into the hills. Your footsteps have the path illuminated too you in a dream, and without any real awareness of the passage of time, you ascend inland from the seaside town.

As the heat of the day's sun peaks, clouds roll in and a thick rain begins. Your footing becomes treacherous, and even the lightest on their feet spend time slipping and crawling on their hands and knees. At the top of the fateful hill, the site of an atrocity you somehow witnessed, you also reach the eye of the storm. Cold, wet, and filled with an unspoken despondency, you find a small altar.

You see the altar, and despite your early day ambition, you hesitate to approach.

What do you do?

Quote:
That night, dreams come. You don't remember them, only that you awake, freezing. Your rooms are ice cold, despite the coals glowing in the fireplaces. Your breath fogs and you feel it, a dark presence, there behind you! No. Outside? You look, your eyes drawn to the east.

Somewhere a woman screams, heartbreaking sorrow. And the echo of laughter in the night sky. A flicker of light on some hillside. Impossibly far away, it is just a tiny blur, but you know. How could you not? Albionii, the unicorn. It beckons.

Her relaxed fingers gently caress the enchanted dagger strapped to her forearm.

Her gaze briefly rests on Garth.
Let's see what the priest makes of this cursed place.

She starts to pad sideways to her right, watching the altar as she moves. As she steps her right foot sweeps the damp, loamy ground - glancing down occasionally - looking for the bones of the town's lost children.

... except for Hehsh. Deep down, his own lost lineage, a mystery he had been bound to uncover, is revealed to his soul to be useless, futile. People are left behind for one reason alone, he realizes, tears creeping from reptilian eyes: they are found unworthy. He crumples to his knees, as waves of despair continue to afflict him, rendering him powerless. For this is where lost children come for release.

Dirty yellow bones in dark soil. The mineral wealth of this hill as haphazardly scattered calcium - a vein of despair.

Tears pooled in her eyelids, sheening her vision, Mavis lifted her head to see the figure advancing. The crushing despair shifted her soul...

Not sure if I can cast lightning bolt without hitting ruby or Mavis in melee, so I'm going to post two rolls, one for a twin spelled lightning bolt and one for a twinned spelled chromatic orb at third level. Lightning bolt fires in a line template and it seems like that might hit you for a lot of damage, hence the alternative chromatic orb. These will each cost three spell points in addition to burning a third level spell slot. Probably overkill, but I really want to hit this thing with two thundrbolts. Edit. Mavis opens her mouth to raise objections, No detect good and evil? No augury? No speak with dead?
but there’s no time. She closes her mouth. Besides, the cleric seems confident - let’s see what happens.

She relaxes her stance and leans forward. Garth’s optimism is contagious.

Garth finds a number of gems, one large and black, and a score that are small and luminescent. The smaller ones glow with a pulse like heartbeats, and pulse brighter when Garth looks in.
Nov 22, 2019 5:00 pm
I am going to see if I can identify these smaller gems.

Garth grabs one of the smaller gems and with a prayer to Gond for wisdom, he casts identify

Ruby eyes up the gem in Garth's hand. "Is it...symbolic? Or do you think that thing also liked hoarding money?"
Nov 22, 2019 7:47 pm
"Thats not normal. We should be careful. I've never seen any gem glow like that." Hasan says rolling over to get up after Hehsh's attack. "What do you think we should do with that?"
Nov 22, 2019 7:53 pm
Mavis stands on tiptoe to see what everybody is looking at. Her big, brown eyes widen in amazement. She turns her eyes up to look at Garth.
Surely the wise holy man will know what to do.
She looks back at the glowing gems, resisting the temptation to reach out and touch them.

Wanting to give Garth some space, Mavis steps away and begins walking to the altar. She takes care not to tread on, or disturb, the bones emerging from the ground.

She has no words, nor can she properly order her thoughts to encompass the tragedy that unfolded here.
Poor bairns is the best her mind can offer. She knows it's trite and inadequate, but to try for better would be to invite a sympathy that she can ill-afford until the time for flinty hardness has passed.

Reaching the altar, Mavis starts to investigate.

Garth's mind reels with revulsion. His soul actually feels dirty just for holding this...thing.

These gems. These poor souls.

Tears start to flow, both from sorrow and anger. He coughs and tries again.

Each of these gems is a soul that this monster stole. They are trapped for eternity in these prisons. We have to smash them and give them their release.

He takes a second to kick the dead innocence eater.

Everyone pray to whoever you believe in, to show these souls to their proper rest.

Garth prays to Gond, protect these souls on their journey.

He grabs a rock or a hammer if someone has one, and smashes the first of the gems.
Nov 25, 2019 5:49 pm
Solemnly Mavis returns from the Altar to Garth. She removes her pack, loosens the leather cords sealing it and removes her hammer. As she takes her portion of the gems from Garth, she reaches high to place a sympathetic hand on his back.
Gorm Fire-Eyes, will lead souls of lost bairns t' rest.
Mavis wants to ask about the black stone, but understands that now is the time to follow Garth's lead.

She takes the gems to the altar. It seems fitting that the site of imprisonment should also be the anvil of release.
It's been a while since Mavis had used her traditional dwarven skills, but the meditation of arranging the gems for destruction brings the knowledge of her youth back.
Holding Gorm Gulthyn's prayer of protection in her mind she strikes the gems, entreating her god to protect these innocents on the path to their afterlife.

Just a question for clarification: Garth wanted to smash the gem, does he allow Mavis to take over?
Nov 25, 2019 6:40 pm
Ruby doesn't say anything, simply staring at Garth with concern on her face. Maybe she doesn't want the responsibility, or maybe she thinks it's best Garth handle the matter. Regardless of her reasoning she watches from a few feet back, ready to comfort him if he starts breaking down.

What an awful burden to be thrust upon someone so suddenly. And here I thought today was going to be a nice day.

Garth went to smash one of the ones he is holding. He is not going to stop Mavis from smashing one as well. He doesn't think you need to be a cleric to do it.
Nov 25, 2019 7:23 pm
Garth smashes the gemstone with a rock. The ground begins to shake, and light pours forth, shining upwards. The bones in one area gather and knit together, and there is a blinding flash. A small girl in torn clothing appears, staring at her hands, shaking with confusion. The gem in his hand has vanished.

Mavis takes a gemstone to the altar and raises her hammer. She is about to smash it when she notices shattered glass on the altar to an unknown god. Recognizing the shards as the same as the gems in the bag, she hesitates, knowing with certainty this is exactly what the Eater of Innocence had done.
OOC:
Edited: I had said that there were broken gems in the bag, but I meant that the broken gems on the altar were the same type as the unbroken ones in the bag.
Nov 25, 2019 7:59 pm
Hasan would take this time to check Hehsh. "Whats going on? Are you ok?"
Nov 25, 2019 8:04 pm
With her hammer raised, Mavis notices the fragments.
Gems, shattered fragments, gems, hammer, shattered fragments, hammer, gems, altar, hammer. Dumbfounded, Mavis spends seconds connecting the symbolism.

Carefully, respectfully she scoops up the soul gems and quickly backs away from the altar.

Best do it tha’sen Garth. she gently places the gems back in his strong hands Freein’ on altar seems like it abuts sacrifice
Aye, this is a precarious seam, best left to the cleric

The gems transferred, Mavis offers Garth her hammer and takes a defensive position by the child.

Mavis calls out over her shoulder to the child S’aw’reet pet. Tha’s safe now. Tha’ from mourning t’n?

Hehsh prays to no one. He never learned how to pray and to be frank the whole calling on a higher power for salvation thing always seemed a little far fetched. Sure the gods helped out every now and again, but it seems like the people here on the plane always do the heavy lifting.

But he does have faith. He believes in Garth, and Mavis and Ruby. He even believes in Hasan since there's no water around. (Hehsh will never let Hasan live that down.) Most of all, as each gem is smashed on this altar, Hehsh believes these souls will move onto a better place.
Nov 25, 2019 8:19 pm
Garth collects all the small gems and one by one he smashes them.
When he is done, he will look around to see if there seem to be any remaining bones. In case one of the gems was dropped.
Nov 26, 2019 1:48 am
Each smashed gem resurrects another living child. Ranging in age from four to fourteen, they have no memory of what had happened to them. The oldest tells you they come from a town called Port Dawn.

When the last living gem had been smashed and a child freed, you estimate that the bones of a half dozen others remain.
Nov 26, 2019 4:59 am
Under his breath Hehsh asks "How long ago did the stories say this happened? Did we just hand this town a bunch of orphans who will need food and shelter?"

The idea that Mourning Town wouldn't take in these unfortunate children hadn't occurred to Mavis, but Hehsh was right to mention it.
Seemed prosperous town. I reckon Mourning t'n'd welcome bairns - help put their ghosts t'rest too. Nowt to do but find out eh?

Mavis remembers the ominous black gem, wondering if Garth's god can help with that one.
What 'bout black 'un Garth? Mavis indicates the remaining gem Can tha' god help with that an'all?
Mavis has a suspicion that it might be the soul of on the town elders, or perhaps the Eater of Innocence.

The name Port Dawn is an old name. I think it may have been the old name of Morning Town, but that is just a guess. If it was, then these are the souls of the children who gave the town its name. Either way, I feel they will find homes for the children.

Garth looks to the black stone.

Let's see if I can find out anything about this ugly thing.

Once more, Garth mutters in prayer. He is loathe to touch the black gem, but that is the price of magic.

The Heartstone, created with the essence of sacrifices by the Eater of Innocence, can cure any disease by touch. While the origin of the stone is obviously evil, the gem itself does not radiate evil or have any other powers.

Nov 27, 2019 12:25 am
The children follow you back to town reluctantly. The closer you get, the more anxious they become. While they are grateful, and aware of the passage of time, the uncertainty of their futures weighs heavily.

The town is entirely astonished by their return. Once the situation is explained, each of them is greeted by name by adults and elders. Relatives sweep them up into tear stained embraces, and even a pair of children with no living relatives are likewise immediately offered adoption by multiple families.

As to the five of you, rough hugs tug you in all directions. A thousand questions fly at you, including the fate of the children who did not return, until the town leader, Burgh Nolan, asks for a spokesman to tell the tale.

Who speaks and what do you say?
Nov 27, 2019 3:57 am
OOC:
I will speak, if no one else feels the need.
Nov 27, 2019 7:32 am
Mavis looks at Garth, waiting for him to recount the tragic tale.
Nov 27, 2019 5:13 pm
Garth steps forward.

It might be best of the children aren't here for this.

Once they have been led off Garth continues.

There was a creature living in the woods by an old altar. It was an evil unlike anything I have ever encountered.

It attacked us and it took everything we had to defeat it. The first notice we had was a feeling of overwhelming sorrow mixed with guilt and uselessness.

It was powerful magic, I have no doubt that if we had been a group of scared children, it would have been a grim outcome.

The best I can figure is that it probably snuck into town in the middle of the night and convinced the children that they were unworthy and unloved. Then, it either killed them or they killed themselves.

You may not believe me, but that is not even the most vile part of the story. The souls of these innocent children were captured in gems which the creature carried with it.

Garth looks around and takes a deep breath. This is the hard part.

We smashed the gems and freed the souls, which returned them to life. The reason we could not recover all the children is because the creature...used some of the souls in a ritual to create a magic item.

Their souls are lost. The item created, although by the most heinous of means, is in itself not evil. It is a stone which heals disease.

I leave this decision up to you. If you think it would be too painful a reminder of your loss, we will take the stone with us. Maybe a healing house in the next city would want it.
If you want to have it here to use, so that some small good will come of this, then that is fine as well. Just know that destroying it would not bring them back and would really make it all in vain.

Garth looks at the town leaders.

Know this...those children are not responsible for their death and neither are the people in the town at the time. Only the creature is responsible.

If this town was once called Port Dawn, maybe it should be again. No more mourning.

Gareth’s words stir Mavis’s memories of the events into a stew of emotions.
Sorrow, anger, empathy, melancholia, and dispassionate vengeance all compete within her - until the catharsis of Gareth’s final address.
No more mourning.

They’d changed this small part of the world. They’d done that. Them. Us.

This tiny band stood against the deepest of evils. They put their lives in front of the innocents and snarled defiance at the darkness.

Mavis had experience of death, she’d flitted between the shadows of the near underdark to deal silent death to monsters - and what for? For their hides. For her guild. For profit. She’d come to the surface and her sights had been raised. She’d left the dark, and entered the light.

With this realisation, a new ingredient was added to Mavis’s stew of emotions- purpose.

The story reduces the town folk to fresh tears, but also hope shines from their wet faces. An age old curse had been lifted and you are the undisputed heroes of this tale. Countless invitations to dine with the locals are extended, but the chaos is resolved by the proclamation of a town feast that evening.

The decision of what to do with the black gem is complicated by competing views. The Mourning Stone, as it quickly becomes known, is powerful and in the end the mayor settles it by describing a temple dedicated to the memory of the lost, and shepherded by a charitable priest who will offer its healing power services for free. This seems utterly sensable that even the most jaded are left without further argument.

Your rooms and stabling for your mounts are of course covered for the next day, and for any time you happen to pass through the area.

You are offered clothing and new cloaks, all to be tailored to fit that day, of the finest cut and cloth they have, which isn't terribly opulent being a simple harbour town but will be a step up from whatever you're wearing.

Ruby makes a note to find Garth during the celebrations, patting him on the back. "That was a real swell speech you gave Garth, you sure know how to inspire people. I hope they can move on." There is a hint of sadness with that last statement, but Ruby doesn't show it on her face.
Dec 2, 2019 9:37 pm

The villagers know how to throw a feast; with excessive amounts of food. A golden bird, roasted to perfection, mashed potatoes, yams slathered in butter and cinnamon, dozens pies, fluffy bread. And whoever thought of shoving nuts, berries and stale bread up the dead birds ass before roasting it was a genius. Hehsh has never been so thankful to finish a quest.

Dec 4, 2019 3:04 am
The party passes eventually as the night.

Again, dreams come, but this time they are unremembered, other than the sensations of warmth, love, bliss, peace; the fluffy dreams of angels.

You awake in your rooms before dark has given up it's grasp. You hear movement downstairs, pack your things, and find the innkeep setting a breakfast for you. A quick meal, while your faithful hippogriffs are saddled and fed. As dawn becomes a bright sliver on the horizon, you are aloft, headed north for the next stop.

The flight along the coast takes you past jungle, hills, small rivers full of life, the dark smears of smoke marking small villages and towns.

Further north, the great desert moves closer and by early afternoon, after a stop to rest, feed, and water your beasts, the hear begins to grow alarmingly. Scrub grasses become scarce other than near the water. You fly lower, over the water and only then find relief.

Skimming over the wave tops, you spot an underwater city. Circling above you imagine it to be a surface city, lost to rising tides in some ancient epoch, visible now only by the square cut of its walls.

North, shipping becomes more frequent, fisherman wave tentatively, shallow trade barges shield their eyes as you pass overhead.

Soon, you see the city ahead. Perched on two huge islands of a dry river delta, a shanty tent town perched precariously in the river bottom. A great pier complex stretches into the inland sea, with shallow bottom skiffs, rafts and barges ferrying traffic to the shore.

One island houses wealth, great sandstone walls guarding its inhabitants, and tragic flowing both from the site and inland highways.

The other island is poorer, less well protected with a dingier crowd, more laborers and trades folk, rougher nere-do-wells and mercenaries, sailors and the destitute.

This time your hippogriffs do not lead you to an easy inn, but must be guided.

Welcome, to Great Delta.

"Interesting. I've never seen so many people in one place. What do they do so close to eachother?" Hehsh calls over the wind.
Dec 4, 2019 7:00 am
"I haven't the faintest clue. Ya think there's a reason they're all segregated?" Ruby points between the two islands. "Oooo, do you think we'll see any pirates, or sail on a boat? I've only heard stories of either, this is a great opportunity!" Ruby starts getting downright giddy as she imagines the possibilities; this feeling passes luckily, and her emotions become grounded. "Well, first we should figure out where to go. There'll be time after since we're on a special assignment."
Dec 4, 2019 7:11 am
Well, our mounts don't seem to know where to go. I think the richer part of town would be more likely to have lodgings that can handle our needs. Let's do a fly over and see what we can find. If not, we can land by the gate and get information.
Dec 4, 2019 7:42 am
Mavis nods agreement at Garth's plan, and prepares to follow his lead.

Dec 5, 2019 1:44 am
A few archers in the wall bring bow to hand, but none of them draw a bead on you as you fly over the wall into the rich half of the city. From an altitude, you can pick out a few likely spots for a hippogriff stablery. You spot three locations of note, indicated by art style on their roofs:

The Hooded Eye - dark affected architecture, a wading pool and fountain, and a large number of camel stables.

The Grasping Hand - Tall walls protect this estate, with armed bowmen and pikemen adding to the armed mystique. Garth notes that this is likely also the home of a mercenary company as well as an inn.

The Bones of the Whale - more subdued than the other two, you only spot it when you see a griffin rider circle and land in the courtyard. You also see a pegasus in the yard playing a ball game with two teenage girls. The flash of armor in the sun tells you the place is also guarded well.
Dec 5, 2019 1:56 am
Garth glides slowly and unthreatening to The Grasping Hand. Assuming no ones shoots at us, we will land and arrange lodging.
Dec 5, 2019 2:09 am
As proprietors of a fly-in stablery, they do not shoot you as you land. In fact, they give you space for the hippogriffs to swoop and flare to an elegant and soft landing on sand. Two slaves come out from under the covered stable and fall to their knees, prostrated. Garth's hippogriff gives them a disdainful sniff and them ignores them. An old man comes out, his oiled beard and peaked hat marking him as somewhat wealthy.

"Welcome to the Open Fist, my friends," he says with a great smile. "We have the finest grooms and the most lavish rooms this side of the Bawish Expanse." He spreads his arms wide in greeting, or perhaps offering a hug.

Gentle Ruby, tarry a scant moment, I pray. I feel I discern that whilst our valorous superordinate has resolved to procure hostelry and ancillary services in the general; he has yet to determine the selection in the particular.
Hasan, would you have us sally forth and reconnoitre alternative lodgings; that, perchance, we might construct an authoritative ontology of suitability? Or should we hazard a trio of auric specie on the establishment with which we are pro tem co-located?

Garth plays the man for one night, but tells him our business may take more than a day.

So, shall we eat, bathe, maybe have a drink, then try to find the person we want in the morning?

"Person we want"? What gives, Garth? It were Blackwater where wi' find Mordenth, weren't it?
Great Delta is just stop on way - nowt special.
OOC:

All I have is:
Qralloq says:

"Mordenth can be found in the independent city of Blackwater. He maintains an elven persona of da'Norto Illianstar, whose reputation is as colorful as his name. Find Mordenth, and then tell him that he and I met in a thunderstorm under a full moon, and he will assist you as he would me."
Machiabelly says:

...The second night would be Great Delta, a much rougher town. Keep your hands on your purse there. Then at the end of the third day, we should make Blackwater.
I thought this was just a narrated stop (unless the DM throws a quest at us), before we pick up the main quest in Blackwater.
What did I miss?

Garth is used to the sounds of men preparing for trouble.
He gets dressed including armour and weapons.

Dec 12, 2019 2:21 am
Ruby gathers all her gear and investigates the cause of the disturbance to the best of her ability, which is to say she catches what the terrified person shouts and thinks real hard while catching up to Mavis. You've all gathered in the main floor common room. Several dozen armed men are prepared for some assault. Windows are being nailed shut from the inside, and the servants head into the cellar. They all seem nervous, even the mercenaries, though their nerves are the grim manner of experienced soldiers.

"Dust Devils," explains the Open Fist commander, named Dolbert, "ride the winds of the storm. During the tempest, they'll wreak chaos and havoc in the city. Our job is to protect this area, two blocks on all sides of this inn. That's sixteen square blocks, if you know your sums. We'll patrol in squads of six. We don't have time to test you proper, but to judge your ability, do you think you could hold your own against a squad of my men?"

Hehsh's comment draws a few looks and oddly, more confidence in your abilities.

You walk outside into the peaceful mourning air. The sunshine is bright, the air still. But to the east, you see a gigantic wall of brown growing higher in the sky. You see that it is nearly upon the city.

Rushing to your assigned intersection, you barely make it when the storm his the city. First a few swirls and zephyrs stir the dust, then you're rocked by a blast of wind as the wall hits. Instantly, the scream of sand tears at your skin, baffles your hearing and obscures your sight.

In the madness, grasping at each other so as to not lose your companions in the chaos, you hear a chuckle. Deep, throaty, evil.

The locals come out and you hear calls for lost ones. Some are returns, but not all. A runner from the mercenary band shines to check on you, and tells you that one squad was badly wounded, but they all managed to survive, and drive off what devils appeared near them.

"The storms are rare, but when they do some, dozens of people can be carried off. A bounty exists for slaying the creatures, and we should drag this back to the Open Fist." He underdogs some twine and helps you secure the devil's legs for dragging.

Hehsh follows to open fist. On the way back he asks, "A bounty you say? How much for one?" After a few moments thought he follows up with "Do you know where they take the abductees?" Growing up with druids, he never saw treasure, as druids are a frugal bunch. It wasn't until joining the adventurers that he first encountered gold. He very quickly developed a fondness for it. Perhaps there is more fortune here? And maybe these captured villagers could be rescued too? Everyone wins.

Dragging the body back to the inn, the mercenaries tell you that the bounty is 300 gp and is paid by the merchants guild. They also brought into a few from their squads, so will be loading a cart to collect those funds, but they will advance you the bounty now if you want to head out.

As to the source of the devilry, they kindly suggest that stronger teams than yours have attempted to put an end to it.

Not one to be intimidated, Ruby will insist they offer any information regarding their whereabouts. She also will suggest to combine forces to make a bigger team, which shall avenge the fallen.
Dec 29, 2019 7:22 pm
The man smiles toothily and claps the sturdy halfling hard on her shoulder, and laughs in surprise when she doesn't stumble under the jovial blow. "Maybe you have the stones to survive the mountain."

He kneels down and speaks softly, eye to eye with Ruby. "There is a tale of the Devils Mountain. Pay a jongleur in the square to hear it proper. Then go to the Merchants Guild and apply for a bounty on the Devils. If you are going to do this foolish thing at least you should be paid well!" He laughs standing up. "If you survive!" He laughs more and more, holding his belly as he walks to his men.

"Let's not be hasty." Hehsh says after counting out his bag of gold meticulously. "I for one am interested to hear what the merchant guild has to say." And how much they are offering.

Hehsh will follow the mercenaries advice and listen to a "joubler" (jester?) talk about the dust devils before going to see the merchant's guild.
Dec 30, 2019 12:24 am
"But Garth, he said I've got stones! I didn't even know that!" Ruby says, rather proudly in fact. "But... I suppose it can wait, I just feel bad about all these people. I should've been an adventurer a long time ago."
Dec 30, 2019 12:56 am
Mavis listens intently to the arguments on both sides. As a dwarf she believes any argument involving stones carries weight - you don’t get much more weight than stones - except gold. But it seems that gold is on Hehsh and Ruby’s side too. Gold and stones - a strong argument.
But Garth’s insight into the will of gods cannot be ignored either.

Mavis silently looks up into Hasan’s face, awaiting his wise judgement.

As you make your way to the market square, which you would have seen from the air and isn't far, you see people emerging from their homes. Choking cries for the missing ring, but as more and more people come out, you begin to hear the sounds of industrious repairs, and the sweep of reed-brush brooms on the streets clearing away the huge amount of sand that was left by the storm.

At the market, he stalks are open, but a few makeshift tables are being laid out, and barkers with baskets of fruit and vegetables have begun ceiling out their wares. In the center, a singing juggler is telling a rowdy epic, dressed in bright colors bisected by black geometric designs and with four red balls spinning above get, but few have gathered around her yet. She is backed against a dry fountain that a few men are trying to clear of wet sand.

"OOoo, that must be her! Remember to tip everyone." Ruby says excitedly, very much wanting to hear a fascinating tale or two no matter how tall it may seem. She approaches her, intent on hearing the rest of this story before inquiring about their own inquiries.
Dec 31, 2019 4:15 pm
"A story is good to hear. I agree. Perhaps if its something we could do we should accomplish the freeing of our ally before freeing a town of its bi annual attacks. But I would like to think of this as something we need to accomplish after our main objective."
Hasan says accompanying the group.

He nods at Rubys comment of tipping.
Jan 4, 2020 11:11 am
Mavis hears Hasan’s plan and agrees, but is too impressed with Ruby’s ruthlessness to show her agreement to Hasan.

Aye lass, if tha tips em, ah’ll fillet em. Ah’m allus at ‘vantage with owt prone.
She spins her dagger on the heel of her hand to emphasise the point - and with Mavis’s new dagger it was a very pointy point.

But Mavis hopes that before she and Ruby do murder their enemies, they might have time to take in the show. Mavis might even give the performers some money in gratitude.
Jan 4, 2020 2:28 pm
The jongleur, as she seems to be called, sees Ruby lead the others, and turns her attention to you. The balls she juggles keep a rhythm, higher for longer bears, shorter for quicker seconds.

She seems to be singing a funny story about an unlikely boy who survives death only to be a woeful disappointment to a cult that worships his miracle.

She wraps up the song and welcomes you. "Welcome visitors, you came on our worst day, the City of Great Delta rarely gets rain, but our precipitation is verily a pain."

Jan 6, 2020 2:10 am
"Ooo," she says, pursing her mouth, eyes going wide. She bonds a free times and her fey start tapping, and as ball goes up as she begins humming, then three more.

" Come listen, my pretties, to my tale of woe
It all started such a very long time ago
When Helmand the Steadfast sat on the opal throne
The Great Delta prospered and the rivers shone like gold.

The storm clouds gathered, dust was in the air
Everyone took shelter, and though such storms were rare
Great Delta knew how, to keep their loved ones safe
Through the ravages of wind and the scouring strife.

Sandstone home, Great Delta, build your walls so high
That even the mighty dragons dare not cross the sky

The dustwall crossed the desert, then the marsh on riverside
It slammed apart the village, and smote those outside
Their screams were swallowed by the wailing of the storm
Voices lost forever, their songs heard nevermore.

The dust storm toppled huts, and Great Delta shuddered anon
Wooden buildings flattened, and crushed under blowing sand
The terror of that storm, was not the end of most,
But the tearing claws of the Devils fed on the surviving host.

Sandstone home, Great Delta, build your walls so high
That even the mighty dragons dare not cross the sky

That night shook Great Delta, its effects worse and wore
Hundreds dead from the worst storm that e’er come before
Hundreds more stolen by the Devils that rode sirocco
But the worst to happen, was the river ceased to flow.

The trickling silence crushed us, how could we go forward
‘No time to mourn our dead’, Helmand the Steadfast roared
He gathered the smiths and diggers to tunneled down below
And built the great fountain, Great Delta’s lifeblood soul.

Sandstone home, Great Delta, build your walls so high
That even the mighty dragons dare not cross the sky

Helmand the Steadfast is long dead these days
And Devils riding duststorms still raze us I’m sad to say
While people e’er after have quested to quell the ail
None return from Devil’s Mountain the source of claw and gale.

Sandstone home, Great Delta, build your walls so high
That even the mighty dragons dare not cross the sky."

She taps her feet a few more times counting down as the balls return to her belt pouch.

She curtseies.

"So we just go to the mountain and kill some of these monsters, loot their hoard, gives these people vengance, take our reward and move on. I'm sure this mountain isn't that far out of the way." Hehsh doesn't actually know where the mountain is. If their is a nearby mountain, he just assumes that's the one.
Jan 6, 2020 9:12 am
Gold! They paid for songs in gold!
Mavis's head moved from staring at the gold, to the adventurers, and back to the gold again, and back to the party. Her head a metronome of disbelief.

Tentatively, Mavis offers a gold piece to the jongleur, shaking her head in disbelief at her own actions.
A piece of gold is a few days wages for most miners. This chap gets several for a rhyme!
Her dwarven instincts cried out that gold was for hoarding, yet.... these skylanders did have a more colourful society because their gold flowed.
The performer would no doubt spend the gold on other skylander frivolities, and those who received it would...

What was that about a mountain?

It was a shame that Mavis didn’t follow the seam of her thought. It would be millennia before the Johannes Keynehammer would write "The Fiscal Sagas" and introduce the idea of "demand side economancy" to the dwarven kingdoms.
Although, if Mavis had continued her ponderings and written them down, then the world would have lost Keynehammer’s pithy "The market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent." and be left deciphering "Folk ‘as more daft, than tha’ ‘as brass".
Jan 6, 2020 1:41 pm
The jongleur thanks each of you for your tip. She says, "You must be mighty warriors indeed, if you think to bring Devils Mountain to its knees, where the blood of legendary heroes did freeze."

She spins a ball on a finger, then says, "Look, this is no ordinary matter. There are scores of devils in every attack, and our scholars believe that they are paying tribute to something darker, more foul. Powerful magic cloaks the mountain from divination. We've sent our best heroes, our best mind you, ones who could singlehandedly go toe to toe with dust devil's and emerge unscathed, and they have not returned."
Jan 6, 2020 7:48 pm
Thank you for the honest advice. Your story fires up the blood, as it should, but a bracing dose of reality is just as important.

Garth takes Hehsh aside and speaks to him privately.

Your zeal to protect the people of this city speaks well of you. It shows bravery and compassion.

Garth pauses before continuing.

However, there are a lot of people depending on us to finish our quest. On a personal note for you...it is a dragon we are trying to rescue, and one who may have information on your father.

I think that maybe we should finish our mission and then at a later date, when we have grown more powerful, we can come back and root out those devils.
Jan 6, 2020 8:42 pm
Ruby thinks out loud. "Gee, to have such mighty heroes vanish in an attempt to quell this threat. How inspiring, yet tragic. I wonder if they're more or less of a threat compared to the dra- to our current mission." Not entirely sure if this information is something to share out loud in a faraway land, Ruby catches herself, barely.
Jan 6, 2020 8:48 pm
The may be a sudden and unexplained twinkle in the storyteller's eye.

Hehsh stares down. "He's supposed to be my father." He mumbles. He traces a his foot in the sand. "I need a hoard. I can't face him without a hoard." Before Garth can respond he gives a full throated dragon roar. "Don't ask me why," Hesh shouts. "I don't know. I just know I need a hoard. It's a dragon thing! Fantastic plot point optimumsquare. It's really immersive when the characters' character changes the story.
At Hehsh's outburst Mavis falls in to her habit of observing and orienting. Not turning away, but watching the dragonborn from her peripheral vision, she considers his words carefully.

Traditional and culture run in Mavis's veins. She'd known that other races had traditions and culture too, but never really considered them. She'd assumed that the other races worn them like clothing, not carried them in their heart. With this outburst she understood the power of Hehsh's instincts as clearly as her own bone-deep longing for lovingly carved masonry.

There would be no reasoning or arguing with Hehsh on this. How could you argue with the calls of the blood?

How big's a hoard Hehsh?
Dare say, might be possible t' find thee hoard wi'out facin' nest o' murderous devils.

Returning to the inn, the mercenaries count out 300 gold coins (already stacked for your easy checking of their count). They're relieved that you've abandoned your mad plan to follow in the footsteps of giants and be killed ignoble-like on some far away mountain.

While you have grumbling about leaving the city to their continued harassment, you collect your hippogriffs and prepare for the flight to Blackwater. The innkeeper mashes sure you're supplied with food (dates, salted meats, was covered cheeses, and berry-rich hard cakes) and water for the journey, including several bags of dried rodents for your fierce mounts. Some of the neighborhood children gather to see you off - your heroics have clearly not gone unnoticed or unappreciated.

The hippogriffs, perhaps greased by the howling storm winds, and anxious and high stepping, waiting for your leave to depart.

You launch, ready for another journey, another city, and the will of a dragon.
OOC:
I'll post a travel montage in the next couple of days (probably on Saturday), and set up the next part of the adventure.
Jan 10, 2020 11:06 pm
"Onward Garth, We shall follow your lead."
Jan 12, 2020 6:53 pm
The inland sea sparkles in the morning air. You can see the storm only as a faint brown smudge on your left (south) horizon. Below, sails are unfurled and inspected, repaired or replaced, but even now several fishing vessels are making their way toward their chosen catches.

Blackwater is more or less straight west, with land to your right and the sea to your left. The hippogriffs, fierce, hot blooded energy burners that they are, fight your precise directions, preferring to fly over the sand where the morning sun quickly warms the beach sand, creating for thermals to ease their effort.

As the morning flight continues, the desert rock and sand moistens, giving way to grasslands and isolated forests. Thin threads of silver mark streams that wind lazily through the plain.

The tree cover grows denser and denser until soon it stretches as far as the eye can see. Across a large river, a vast temperate forest. A few rivers can be seen, and the smoke from unseen villages wisp into the air far to the north.

You take a midday rest on a grassy island in a bay. The hippogriffs make merry sport chasing seals, and tear apart a large sea crocodile too lazy to look up and see it's death coming. They feast on its flesh and nap in the sun as you stretch your saddle sore muscles. An abandoned lighthouse on the island gives you some interest and diversion, but it is long abandoned and yields only a view of the sea.

Later in the day, your flight comes upon Blackwater, nestled where a dark river flows into the sea. An industrious port, you see several massive armed galleys at anchor off an extensive dockworks. Hundreds of fishing boats, barges, merchant sailors, and skiffs ply the water. Millions of birds squawk their wars and battle for aerial dominion. They scatter before the snapping beaks of your mounts.

The city is dominated by mainly three story buildings that loom over shadowy narrow streets. Steep rooves tell of common rain and snow, though the day remains clear and bright. A score of tall towers dot the sprawling metropolis. Smoke from a thousand fires dapples the sky a grayish blue.

Most alarmingly, a guard unit mounted on griffins launches from a stone keep and intercepts you. Armed with very heavy crossbows, they don't overtly threaten you but signal you to follow them back to their base.

Qralloq sent a note to Machiabelly

Jan 12, 2020 8:04 pm
The Marshall recognizes your accent. "Ah, a local. I'm Marshall Jacovi. You must have been away for some time. We've established a no flying law recently, following a rash of public assaults. That's about, what, Kolani, seven weeks now?"

"Nearly eight," nods sergeant Kolani.

"Eight weeks. There are a few inns that could house hippogriffs as fine as these. I'll have two men escort you. When you want to leave, let us know and we'll provide escort then, too. You look well enough off, were you looking for style, comfort, or anonymity?"
Jan 12, 2020 8:35 pm
It has been a while for sure. I guess comfort over style. Anonymity wouldn't hurt either.

Thank you for your help Marshall.
Jan 12, 2020 10:18 pm
A fierce burgeoning rivalry between the air guard griffins and your hippogriffs is interrupted by your meeting coming for a close. Sergeant Kolani and a wingman mount up and launch when you're ready to follow. Kolani dives for speed, his griffin all but skimming over a roof before rapidly winging for height.

The wingman goes wide and escorts from the side.

A few minutes later Kolani circles over a inn whose courtyard has a long, grassy laneway and stone stables. He points down, clearly indicating this is where you are to go but not landing himself.

Landing is simple on the carefully groomed grassy strip. Your hippogriffs soar in and flare their wings only a little to shed forward velocity, but still land at a canter. Climbing r their heads about in fiestiness they playfully snap at a confused groomsman who allows Garth's to grab his arm, mock tearing at it.

"Welcome to the Black Rose, my friend. Who wants some juicy fish? Why, you do, you big furball, yes you do!" he coos.

After you have removed your saddles and gear, you find yourself in the foyer of a haunted mansion. Everything about it screams moldy death and chilling family secrets. An extremely pale, tall man comes forth on his long black formal wear, and says, "Good evening, sirs, madames. I am Mont, and this is the Black Rose. We have rooms available and if you will retire to the sitting room, I will bring you a refreshment as we discuss any of your.... peculiar requirements."

He leads you a great room, filled with sitting chairs, fireplaces, dark tapestries, and shuddered magical reading lamps. One entire wall is a massive bookshelf floor to ceiling, with a rolling ladder to reach the upper shelves.

A small boy, decorated by a large smear of soot on his cheek, looks up from behind a chair beside a fireplace. He holds two wooden animals, bears or wolves by their look. He stares at you in slackjawed wonder.

You have a name. A safe place (presumably) to start. How did you want to priced?
Quote:
"Mordenth can be found in the independent city of Blackwater. He maintains an elven persona of da'Norto Illianstar, whose reputation is as colorful as his name. Find Mordenth, and then tell him that he and I met in a thunderstorm under a full moon, and he will assist you as he would me."
Jan 17, 2020 2:01 am
When Mont comes back with refreshments, Garth will speak to him.

Everything is great Mont. The reputation of this establishment is certainly well earned. I am looking for an old friend who I have heard lives here in the city these days. Maybe you have heard of him, or could put out some inquiries.

His name is da'Norto Illianstar. An elf with a bit of flair.
Jan 17, 2020 2:50 am
Mont gives you a thin white wine, maybe a little ascerbic but refreshing.

"I'm sure I wouldn't know, but at sundown master should return from his... daytime activities. I trust he will know where you should start your search."
Jan 17, 2020 3:01 am
Thank you Mont. Maybe those who want to could bathe, and we would be more presentable for the master.
Jan 17, 2020 4:44 am
Ruby leans in close to her companions. "Do you think he's a vampire? I bet he's a vampire." She whispers almost excitedly, thinking he must be a rather nice vampire to open up such an inn.

With a kind smile on her face she bows slightly to Mont in respect. "Your help is appreciated Mont." A bath would be nice...
Jan 17, 2020 6:44 am
Hehsh nods knowingly. "I was absolutely going to order garlic with my dinner." Hehsh still is unsure about the concept of bathing. Why would anyone want to cover up their natural musk? How do they plan on attracting mates?
Jan 17, 2020 2:28 pm
Mont begins asking your needs, deftly finding out if you have any special dietary needs, but standard fare with a light beer or watered wine, and food and care for your hippogriffs he starts at 2gp each per night, but will a little squeezing you get him down to 6gp total per night. Maybe a little too easily.

The rooms are on the second floor (The top floor begging reserved for the Master). You're the only guests that night so you can ahead out among the 12 rooms, depending if you want sunrise or sunset views, or two corner ones that have a view of the inland sea. The rooms have massive needs with sheet curtains around them, and dressing couches, an armoir, a small sidetable with a mirror and wash basin.

Afterwards, he shows you the bath rooms and promises hot water will be sent in, with an assortment of oils and salts.

Lastly, he says that dinner will be served when you're ready, and just return to this sitting room.

The last you hear from him is telling, "Young Master Gentian, it is time to return to your rooms. You don't want to be here when the Master returns."

Mavis is sure the meal will be lovely, but she really misses hole food. She resolves to find out if there's a dwarven community in the town, somewhere where she can get a spiced 'gus kebab served in zurkhwood shavings.

Trying to lighten the mood, Mavis calls over to Mont.
Scamp tryin' t'cop a late 'un? Ah were same at 'is age, allus tryin' to stay up an' hark what old 'uns were rabbit' on 'bout.
Jan 17, 2020 4:25 pm
Mont nods as if he understands, and says, "Indeed, young miss."
Jan 17, 2020 7:28 pm
Garth will take a bath and when he goes down to dinner, he will leave his weapons and armour in his room, except for the staff which doesn't look like one.
Jan 18, 2020 2:58 am
Hehsh waits in the main hall. Watching and waiting.
Jan 21, 2020 3:29 am
Ruby also takes a bath, glad to take a moment to clean herself. She doesn't take too long, not wanting to be late for dinner even if she is a patron.
Jan 21, 2020 7:45 am
Relaxing in her bath, Mavis considers the house. She's used to the deep caverns, where the dwarven kingdoms meet the underdark, where aberrations and monstrosities prey on prospecting dwarves. So this gloomy house feels as close to normal as Mavis has felt since coming to the surface.

After drying herself, she dresses for dinner, she leaves her pack and armour in the room. She considers the daggers. It seems rude to be armed for dinner. Secreting the magic dagger in the sheath at the small of her back, she places her old dagger on the nightstand. She then absent-mindedly primps her bob, fusses with her eyelashes and straightens her travelling clothes.

Bounding down the stairs, Mavis has an eager optimism in her step, feeling an exciting anticipation now that they are on the last leg of their quest.
Jan 22, 2020 6:16 pm
Hasan waits with Hehse, waiting to bathe till after dinner.
Jan 23, 2020 5:37 am
Dinner hour comes just after sunset. You are summoned to the main dining room, a long table that could sit twenty, but places are set for you near one end, and a line place at the far end. Mont escorts you to the chairs assigned. The lighting is dim, subdued magical flame on artificial torches in sconces. A few long tapered candles provide further light at your end.

Once you're seated, you hear a shuffling sound, and Mont opens a carefully hidden wall panel, bowing lightly as an ancient man walls in, partially dragging one leg. He looks to be human, and art least a hundred years old. Rhuemy eyes reflect the flickering torch light as Mont helps the old man into his seat.

https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/meitor/images/2/27/Oldmanswiths.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20151127102908

He then steps back and introduces you, first naming each of you, and then saying, "I present the master of the Black Rose, Kolvoya Daverov."

The old man watches you.
Jan 23, 2020 5:58 pm
Hehsh watches back. Never get into a staring contest with a dragon
Jan 23, 2020 6:24 pm
better safe than sorry.

Garth stands and bows slightly to the man.

Greetings Master Daverov. Your establishment is first rate.
Jan 23, 2020 6:42 pm
Taking her lead from Garth, Mavis follow suit - but a deep bow and her short stature means she nearly nuts her dinner.
Aye. Reet nice.
Mavis smiles, but it’s with a touch of sadness.
Humans, elves and dwarves all fought monsters and circumstance - but humans also fought the harshest enemy - time.
Seeing the old man, probably not much older than herself, she remembered an aphorism of her father "humans mek good friends, if tha’s quick".
Jan 23, 2020 8:54 pm
"Hi there!" Ruby says cheerily, waving slightly. If she were closer she would shake his hand, but for the moment this will suffice. Hmm...Yeah probably a vampire.

Ruby is unaware of any supernatural efforts at play here.

The old man squints at you, clearly having trouble seeing. "Don't get many visitors anymore, not since the murders. I don't suppose you're from around here, are you? One of you sounds local, but the other two, well, I suppose we don't have any rules about outsiders, do we, Mont?" He laughs throatily which turns into him bending over and coughing.

When he recovers, he says, "Oh, now don't go fretting young miss. I'll tell you a story. A short one is the best I can do, so listen closely."

Mont brings out a dark red soup and ladles the hot, rich liquid into bowls he places before you. The soup is a beet broth brimming full of vegetables so almost as to be a stew.

"I have lived here longer than most. I've seen Blackwater rise from a bumbling town to the mighty port city it is today. I was there in the locanth invasion, and when the black gate opened and the north was consumed by dread. I am not meaning to go on about myself, just believe me when I tell you what is happening now is the worst it has ever been."

"Oh, thank you, Mont, my favorite."

He slurps broth from his spoon. "It began with a rain, rain like mud. Probably came from Great Delta, one of those infernal dust storms they get. Just less demons. But imagine, mud from the sky. I don't know if that mud was related, but that was the start. Then there were murders. A mess of them, all at night. Unsolved, mysterious. Now the town watch, well they aren't the sharpest blades in the drawer, but they straightened out quick. All sorts of people been trying to figure it out, put a stop to it. But none of them been successful. The murders keep happening. When was the last one, Mont?"

Mont steps forward, and replies, "Last night, master. And three nights before that." He steps back against the wall, and then fetches more drinks for everyone, offering wine or a thick beer.

"Last night, eh? Damnedest thing. Well, tis a bad time for visiting. Many folks are just up and leaving. Who would stay? Only those with nothing to lose, and those are the ones that most need friendly voices keeping them in line. The city is going bad, rotting like a swamp."

Mont says, "The signs, master?"

He flaps his lips together, his lack of teeth making his mouth wrinkle loosely. "It's not for dinner conversation, but I'll say that it's always the same. The victims are found the same way, no struggle, and marks left on them. We can talk more about that later, but not now. My digestion is finicky enough as it is.."
Jan 25, 2020 11:44 pm
These are indeed trying times. I would like to hear more after dinner.

Garth pauses to eat a little more soup.

As you say, you have been here in Blackwater for a long time. I was wondering if you knew an elf that we have a message for. His name is da'Norto Illianstar.
Jan 26, 2020 12:42 am
He starts. "What? Illianstar? No, no, that's not at all good. Now what would you be involved with the likes of him?" His rheumy eyes are suspicious.

Jan 26, 2020 8:27 pm
Hehsh doesn't really see any behavior or tells that confirms his suspicions.

To Garth, he replies, his rheumy eyes trying to find him. "Forgive my outburst, young man. da'Norto Illianstar has a reputation, one he takes pride in for reasons that only he would understand. He is a scoundrel, a seducer, and a honorless cur. You can be sure to find him either at the most decadent parties of high society, or in whatever den of debauchery that hasn't the muscle to keep him out. He has torn apart a number of families, seducing one partner then slaughtering the other when challenged for honor. Few will fight him now, and still he remains."
Jan 26, 2020 10:10 pm
Okay, maybe not a vampire. But I wonder...

"That doesn't sound like a good person at all." Ruby offers some of her valuable wisdom. She takes the smallest sip of her soup, letting the taste settle. "Oh Mont, what is in this if I may ask?"
OOC:

Jan 28, 2020 2:21 am
He shakes his head. "I don't. However, there is a party scheduled for the governor's birthday in two nights. It is invitation only, and he would not at all be welcome, so it's likely he would try to be there."
Jan 28, 2020 2:55 am
Would there be any way we could get invitations?
Jan 28, 2020 8:07 am
Mavis tucks into her soup. She appears to regard it with interest, but that's because she doesn't want to appear to interested in the conversation.

At Garth's question she looks up through her fringe, especially eager to hear the answer.
Jan 28, 2020 2:20 pm
The old man sips his soup once more before pushing it away. Mint retrieves the bowl and then collects yours, taking them out of the room. He returns in a few moments with a trolley. He places a lidded plate in front of each of you, then lifts the lid from his master's. "Dinner is shark fillet in a wild mushroom butter sauce, served with a crisp kelp salad and autumn tubers."

He then removes your own lids.

The old man, having taken the time to collect his thoughts, says, "There is a way. I would require a favour. If you accomplish this, I will give you my invitation which will serve to get all of you into the party, as my retainers."
Jan 28, 2020 4:41 pm
Hasan continues to eat the food as quietly as possible intently listening to the unfolding plot.
Jan 29, 2020 1:29 am
"Ooo. How splendid." Ruby claps softly as Mont brings out such an exquisite looking dish. It almost seems as though she isn't listening to the conversation. She is.
Jan 29, 2020 1:40 am
Kolvoya Daverov looks at Hehsh, his eyes seeming to clear momentarily, and they burn through you. "My life is nearly over. To secure my legacy for my heir, I need a particular rare ingredient. It is somewhat distasteful, so I beg you to try and see my as charitably as you can."

He means back, eyes closing. His shoulders slump in resignation. "I need a... I can't even say it."

Mont leans forward. "Master, please, you must. It's your last chance."

He shakes his head, eyes closed tight.

Mont says, "Very well, I'll ask. We need the ashes of a vampire."
Jan 29, 2020 2:08 am
Ruby gags on her food, eyes going wide as she somehow swallows a piece while coughing. "I knew it! Wait, why do you need them?"
Jan 29, 2020 2:42 am
Garth puts on a pained expression.

I am sorry to be indelicate, but I think my years of eating army rations has made my stomach sensitive to such sumptuous food. If I could be excused for a moment.

"Huh." Hehsh is surprised enough that he stops thinking about his father for a moment. "I have many questions which I will now ask in no particular order. First, allow me to second Ruby's question. Next question, how do you expect us to get you vampire ashes? Do you happen to know where one is? If so, do you just keep track of powerful beings of magic like dragons and vampires? Is there anything else we should know about, say a genie or a pit fiend? I ask now because something tells me such information will surely be relevant soon. After glancing at the other diners to determine the correct knife and fork, Mavis tucks in.
She's looking at her plate when she hears Mort's proposal. She raises her eyebrows.

So their options are:
a) Hang around on a street outside a party until they spot a rakish fellow.
or:
b) Recover an artefact of unspeakable (literally in Kolvoya's case) evil for a sketchy ritual.

She wants to give the response: Piss off tha' senile ol' goat but she's sure that'd be rude.

Instead she goes with the safer non-committal Master Gentian? Tha' heir?
Feb 1, 2020 3:32 am
To Ruby, he replies, "I need the ashes to enact a powerful magic that will ensure my heir had what he needs to survive after my passing."

To Hehsh, he says, "There are rumours, but I cannot condemn a man because of such. I am afraid I can give you no specifics on where you might find a vampire."

To Hehsh's last question, he raises an eyebrow. "A dragon? That explains much. And your father? I would have thought him one of the evil Chromatics."

To Mavis, he says, "Aye, Master Gentian is my heir." He does not elaborate on how a man as ancient as he fathered so young a child.

Hehsh replies. "Yes, your character assessment of my father was obvious. I'd like to judge him for myself if you don't mind. Now, if you really want those vampire ashes, you should tell us about those rumors. Surely, as a father concerned about his legacy, you will appreciate a son's desire to learn about his father." Emotionless as Hehsh's face may be, there are sparks arcing along his body.

He harumphs harumphally. "Very well. Just don't go killing folk until you suss out the truth of it. There is a woman, Candace Billok, who keeps unnatural hours and rumor is no one had seen her eat. She claims to some sensitivity of the palate, and refuses all food and drink at social occasions. It's not much to go on, but nothing I know about Miss Billok tells me she can't be a vampire."
Feb 2, 2020 5:09 am
"That...didn't really answer my question." Despite her disappointment Ruby wears a cheery tone, not wanting to offend the lord of the establishment but lacking in subtlety. "What uh-what are you exactly if I may ask? I personally thought you were a vampire yourself."

He closes his eyes, resting a moment. "No, I am not a vampire. I am alive. When I pass, which will be soon, I will cease to be. Young Gentian will inherit my estate, but will be able to keep it only if I can give him access to the resources he needs. Fortunately, or unfortunately I suppose, a necromancer has created a method for young Gentian to seek my advice and harness my power, until he is ready to stand on his own. Then, he can smash the philactery and free my soul for rest." He sighs. "It is distasteful, but I am ensured that time will pass quickly for me, with no discomfort."

Mavis keeps eating, looking up through her fringe at Garth.
She's fairly sure that liches are bad, but wonders whether allowing children to harness their power is the a good idea.
Illianstar might be a son of a bitch, but adding a son of a lich to the city's problems doesn't sound wise to her.
Ruby seems keen on helping, and she's formidable in a fight, but this decision will require the wisdom of the holy.
She continues to eat the shark without tasting it, awaiting Garth's decision.

Feb 8, 2020 6:01 pm

Feb 8, 2020 7:33 pm
"If," long pause, "da'Narto, is as frivilous as the old man describes, we may be able to find more clues at the local taverns, or other places with carousing."
Feb 8, 2020 9:27 pm
I have to admit that I am torn. Killing a vampire while tough, would most likely be good for society. However, helping create a lich? Not so much.
Feb 10, 2020 11:26 am
Ah agree with Hehsh. Find more out 'bout this place, afore we go stabbing things.
Ah were quite surprised old fella didn't have more to offer afore retiring for kip.

Hasan agrees with what seems like more gathering intel.

Mavis dabs at her mouth with the napkin.
If we're out on town, ah'll get dressed up. she nods at her companions, and excuses herself Gentles.

She heads back to her room to don her leathers and retrieve her other dagger.
As she cinches the straps on her leather, she reflects that this quest is much more complicated than she imagined.

As a dwarven deep assassin her main worry was how to kill, not what to kill. But the cleric seems like a wise leader, if she follows his orders then she's confident that they'll do the right thing.
Feb 14, 2020 7:52 am
Hehsh looks at his companions. "Two things. One, that is the first thing Mavis has said the entire time I've known her that was understandable. Second, what do you think she looks like dressed up?" Hehsh is far more concerned with point two than the question of his father.

Ladies, shall we go have a drink or three?
Feb 20, 2020 1:31 am
You take your leaves of the creepy inn and make your way to a tavern you saw by air on your way in. The Baleful Goat promises a raucous crowd, with music and laughter leaking from every portal. Upon entering, you find a decently busy service, with a bunch of people who share familial characteristics crowded around a bard on a small stage, drowning out his own song with their group rendition of the words.

Picking a spot well away from them, you gain a table and an uncomfortably buxom serving wench comes to your table. "Food or drink? We've got ducks plump and juicy in a salty rub." she says loud enough to be overheard.
Feb 20, 2020 6:41 am
Hehsh will never, ever, say no to duck in a salt rub. He takes two. Before the wench can leave he asks, "Do you know an elf by the name of da'Norto Illianstar? We understand he is a frequent patron of these kind of establishments." He looks the wench up and down. "Also frequent patron of wenches."
OOC:

"Food or drink? We've got ducks plump and juicy in a salty rub."
Mavis raises her eyebrows. Weird flex, but a'reet. Nowt as queer as folk.
OOC:
I don't know whether Qralloq did that deliberately, but 'duck' is a northern term of affection for a person - like chick, hen, and cock. Cock is considered a much less affectionate term in the south.
Mavis keeps a close eye on the serving wench as Hehsh asks his question.

You could do worse, but if you want to rub elbows with the high uppity-ups, you'll need to be taking your custom to The Grand or the Island Jewel. "Why would we need new clothes?"
OOC:
As a character, Hehsh doesn't understand why we need new clothes, but I do as a player, and I think this is a good course of action, get fancy clothes, crash a fancy place and see if we can catch this guy. We got two nights rights? We can spend one night trying to catch mr. fancy dragon at a bar, and if that doesn't work, one night killing a vampire.
Feb 26, 2020 5:16 am
Garth understands that not every society has the same hang ups.

Well Hehsh, humans, and many in big cities, often judge a person by how much money they have, and they judge how much money they have, by how the clothe themselves.

So, we have to get stylish clothes to appear more wealthy than we are.

Ruby scratches her chin, reanalyzing their agenda. "This whole business is gonna have us running all around the place, lotta work just to meet some fancy-pants elf in my opinion. But we might meet a vampire....hmmm." Ruby takes a swig of her drink.

"At least we have the money to buy swanky new clothes."

This makes intrinsic sense to Hehsh. Clearly money is important. Therefore, showing you have money is important. Clothes are as good a way to show one has money as any. Hehsh makes it a point to buy fancy clothes from now on. "Thank you Garth. That was very well explained."
Feb 26, 2020 6:46 am
You are very welcome, my friend. One can only learn if they ask questions.

OOC:
Lol. Explaining clothes to Hehsh as an analogy with a dragon’s hoard. I love it. By the end of the adventure we’ll have Hehsh wearing more bling than a rapper.
Mavis is quite excited to buy a new frock and go to a party.
She’s already planning designs in her head where she can use her leather worker’s proficiency to make a garter scabbard.
The dwarf doesn’t quite have the build to make her a Bond girl femme fatale, but a dwarf can dream.
Feb 27, 2020 5:36 pm
OOC:
I was going to put a scrunched up image of a bond girl on here to show it could be done. But i felt that as mild insensitive.

OOC:
Follow your dreams Mavis! Hehsh is going to get tacky as fuck for this shindig.
Feb 28, 2020 7:19 am
OOC:
Mavis the model. A scale model.

Are we done here? I'm kinda lost on what we're supposed to be doing next.
Feb 28, 2020 1:38 pm
It's evening. If you want to seek a tailor you'll need to wait until morning.

So you could:
A) return to the inn and get some sleep
B) gather information and rumors from the bar patrons
C) wander the streets looking for trouble
Feb 28, 2020 1:42 pm
OOC:
Thanks. Open games are fine, but occasionally it’s nice to know where the rails are too.
Mavis sinks her beer, nods goodnight to her colleagues and chooses A.
Feb 28, 2020 4:28 pm
Let's call it a night, get some sleep, and go clothes shopping in the morning.
Feb 28, 2020 9:03 pm
"Kay'!" Ruby nods, liking this plan.
Mar 2, 2020 1:51 pm
You return to the inn and whether or not you set watches, you sleep well and remain unmolested and undisturbed. Morning comes and as you make your habituations and your way to the dining room, you find a young serving girl in severe conservative clothing setting the table quietly. She curtseys and retreats to the kitchen. Mont emerges rubbing his hands on a cloth.

"Good morning honoured guests. Would you care for a hot tea while we prepare breakfast?"
Mar 2, 2020 2:28 pm
Eee smashin’! From a brickie’s boot, six sugars if tha’ ‘as owt.
The offer of a proper cup of strong tea makes Mavis feel slightly homesick.
But no sense mitherin’ when there’s graft to be done.

Eh up Mort! Ah’m lookin’ to buy nice frock today, ‘as tha’ idea where ah’ might go?
Summat posh. Evenin’ wear like?

Mavis wonders what breakfast will be served. Hopefully a full dwarven, with a fried slice.
Mar 2, 2020 7:20 pm
"Would you happen to have any coffee. I didn't sleep well last night."
OOC:
I'm assuming coffees a thing ;D
Mar 2, 2020 9:10 pm
"Yes please, fine maiden." Ruby answers confidently, unaware if that is the correct terminology to use for the server.
Mar 2, 2020 9:47 pm
Tea would be lovely. Thank you very much.
Mar 4, 2020 2:40 am
The manservant Mont brings you your requested beverages. "Fashion, ma'am? We usually have tailors brought in, but if you're keen on seeing the city, there are a few parlours not a long walk from here. Or I could have a carriage prepared? Yes, a carriage. I will do so. Master isn't leaving the inn this day, so it is not needed. The driver will get you where you want."
Mar 4, 2020 3:42 am
"Just out of curiosity Mont. How long have you been serving the master? And as he always been a... dead guy?"
Mar 4, 2020 4:17 am
Mont looks sharply at Hehsh, but only sighs. "He is old but he isn't dead yet, young sir, though I don't imagine it will be long now if he can't complete the transference. As to my service, I would say it has been nearly forty five rewarding years."
Mar 4, 2020 6:07 am
Transference? Mavis catches Mort’s word.
Transference doesn’t sound like the necromancer just wants to be around to provide guidance to the lad.
In one direction it sounds like possession, in the other like stealing youth.
Keep him talking. Transference from ... to ....?
This transference, complicated spell is it? Thy master must be reet clever to cast such magics, an’ ah bet tha must be reet clever to assist. Ah’ve no ‘ead for magics, ‘ow does it work? In simple terms, for numpty like me.
Mar 4, 2020 4:31 pm
Garth stays quiet, hoping Mavis can get this guy to say more than he should.
Mar 4, 2020 6:07 pm
Mont squeezes his eyes tight. "It's complicated. The mother offered the boy to us. They would share the body, each a partner, until the boy grows to maturity. By then the old man would fade away, leaving only his skills and memories. The boy would be his own self, but with the inherited wealth of his benefactor. If he dies, the boy will be left all but defenseless."

He wipes an eye. "We wouldn't have started this without knowing we would succeed. These are dark magics, and the cost is steep. We had everything we needed to compete the ritual, but our vampire ashes were stolen and destroyed so we can't recover them. We had hoped, briefly, that we could find another source, but it was too much to ask. We'll use the wealth to keep him alive, of course, but the inn is the entirety of it. A fire would render him penniless. Master has many enemies, and without his powers, the boy will be at their mercy."
Mar 4, 2020 6:25 pm
"Do you...know who first took the ashes?"
Mar 5, 2020 1:56 am
"Would that work? And if so, where did you learn this magic?" Hehsh is getting a foul taste in his mouth at this strange ritual
OOC:
I would like to point out the irony of the acrane spell caster having a penalty to knowlege arcana.

Mar 5, 2020 2:07 am
Mont shakes his head. "It was a hired hand. The ashes were delivered to a rival, who sent them back to us after they had been destroyed magically."

To Hehsh this all sounds entirely plausible.
Mar 5, 2020 8:43 pm
Mavis keeps a polite three-dragon-ante face during the explanation, but she’s weakly persuaded.
OOC:
I don’t know - I think we’re going in circles.
Shall we just quickly get some glad rags, and try and get this story moving again by gate-crashing a party?
Mar 5, 2020 11:07 pm
Thank you for the offer Mont, but I think we will stretch our legs and walk to the shops.

Shall we go folks?
Mar 6, 2020 5:03 pm
"Oh yes, we've quite a day after all."
Mar 10, 2020 12:27 am
So what's the plan? If you want to buy clothes, let's just montage that. Spend the coin off your character sheet. I think Clothing, fine is 15 gold.

Then where too?
Mar 10, 2020 12:45 am
During the montage Garth will be asking where the party is, if anyone knows a guy who knows a guy who might be able to get us tickets. Things like that. Maybe someone needs a wound healed or some expensive fabric magically mended.
Mar 10, 2020 6:53 am
Hasan would stand out being in a "big city" a small town bumpkin would probably be swindled into spending more for less.

"Say look a these fine clothes! Think the'll fit into that party?" He says thinking a slick button up counts as "fine attire"
OOC:

Ruby would ask the tailor if he's heard any interesting information regarding this Da'narto fellow or the company he keeps. It's better to walk into a party knowing something about the host after all.
Mar 11, 2020 7:33 am
OOC:
I really like Hasan's idea of being clueless. Imma go down that route too.
Mavis has heard of "the little black dress", but has never seen one. The requirements, "little", "black" and "dress" seem fairly self-explanatory. How hard can it be to buy posh clothes? Posh is expensive and fine, and in Mavis's mind there is no finer material than leather.

After asking around, Mavis finds herself in the back of room of a "speciality" leather goods shop trying on... clothes? Most of the outfits seem to be little more than harnesses. Many of the shoppers here must be keen equestrians, how else would you explain the selection of whips? Perhaps they enjoy dressing like their steeds too.

Mavis eventually finds an outfit that could be described as a short dress. She isn't sure about the embroidered symbols of Lolth, but the shop owner (Mistress Van Om) tells her that "it's a killer look, dah-link"; which persuades Mavis. She rejects the high heeled shoes in favour of sturdy black boots - but mentally records the tactical advantages of being allowed to walk around on what are essentially daggers.

Mavis's final ensemble could be pulled off by a haute couture supermodel with, if not heroin chic, at least cystal meth chic. But Mavis is not a haute couture supermodel, and she couldn't even be said to have cold-turkey chic.

So how to describe her look?
Let's be polite and say it's risqué. Risqué? Yes, risqué. That french accent in "risqué" gives a veneer of acceptability to most things.
That "é" together with Mavis's naïve confidence, means she might just be able to get away with it.
Failing that, in polite society, they might just assume she's éccéntric - or possibly méntally ill.

OOC:
This sort of Oceans 11, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle adventure wasn't what I had envisioned, haha. I'm going to exercise my prerogative to move this forward a bit.
Garth gets a recommendation for another tailor who would deal with high mucky-mucks like Da'narto.

For Ruby, the tailor says that the sort of gossip one hears is unsuitable for his place of business, if you take his meaning. He refuses to elaborate on an effort to maintain his air of dignity.

You search around later in the day when all of a sudden you find armed men step out of the street traffic and surround you. A gnome addresses you.

She is dressed in expensive clothes, loose fitting but fashionable, and has a wand on her belt near to a hand that is ready.

"My master wishes a word. It appears you have been looking for him and he would like to know why. Are you available for an interview this morning, about nowish?"

She is exceedingly polite in her mannerisms. But if you are suspicious (I.e., player characters) a Sense Motive check wouldn't be remiss.
Mar 11, 2020 5:18 pm
Garth bows low, but is careful not to appear to talk down to the gnome.

You seem to have us at a disadvantage, what is your name mistress, and who do you represent?

Qralloq sent a note to Machiabelly
Mar 11, 2020 6:41 pm
Well met Toinks.

Garth turns to his party.

It seems like we get to have our meeting. I feel we can trust Ms. Jewelsplitter. I reccomend we go with her group. That way we all get what we want.

Hasan has no problem going
Mar 11, 2020 8:10 pm
Try as she might, Ruby can't keep staring at Mavis's choice of outfit.

Oh wow, that's...wow. I wonder if I can get Garth outfitted in something like that.

"No!" Ruby shouts in response to Hasan, realizing she's being a bit too loud. "Uh, we should probably dress up for da- the man of interest."
Mar 11, 2020 8:43 pm
Sure. No reason to waste nice outfits.
Mar 12, 2020 12:03 am
Toinks nods approvingly. "We will make sure you have a chance to freshen up and change your outfits before we present you to him. Come, it isn't far."

She leads you along, with her half dozen guards following behind you, two blocks up to a fine inn. You're lead up the stairs, the innkeeper following behind. "None of these rooms are occupied, so take your choice to change. Garith, please send hot water basins for them?"

The innkeeper stays to note which rooms you are taking.

The rooms are identical so there appears to be no real reason to choose one over the other. Undoubtedly taking some precautions such as doubling up to a room, the basins appear and you can freshen up and change your clothes. When you're ready, you find Toinks waiting at the end of the hall, her back to an unused door.
Mar 12, 2020 7:53 am
Cleaned and dressed to kill (or at least dressed to wince), Mavis slowly sways and shuffles her feet - vicariously excited for Hehsh.
She twists and rocks slightly, trying to work some suppleness into the new leather. The leather creaking and squeaking as she moves, she reflects that this won't be the stealthiest of her outfits.
Mar 12, 2020 4:31 pm
Another opportunity for a bath, another bath taken. After it's finished she puts on her simple red dress, and places her staff in the embroidered staff holster she slings over her back, indulging in a few twirls in front of a mirror to admire the outfit. She almost contemplates adding the cape of billowing, but decides it would just clash with the dress colors.
Mar 13, 2020 8:30 pm
Hasan too gets dress and exits the room. Dressed in an odd color pant suit.

"My! I wasn't expecting such outfits on you Ruby I was expecting something like a robe of sorts."
Mar 13, 2020 8:36 pm
Garth is wearing a fitted suit of black cloth, chased through with silver thread. He has a black and silver cape of the same material and black leather boots.
Mar 13, 2020 8:39 pm
What sort of weapons, armor, and magical gear are you going to wear to this meeting?
Mar 13, 2020 8:45 pm

Mavis will have her magic dagger in a garter sheath.
I’ll try and remember that her AC is lower than usual.

Hehsh walks out of the clothing store in slow motion. There is dramatic music playing in the background. If clothing is a sign of wealth than it should be gold. Gold fabric is impractical, but bright yellow colors convey the same idea. He wears, baggy loose trousers along with an equally baggy jacket, which he leaves open, revealing a plain white, sleeveless undertunic . On his head is an odd cap, deliberately turned to the side by the clerk who was assisting him. In the assisting shop keepers words, Hehsh looked "fly man. Them threads are fly." The final piece, the most important piece in Hehsh's mind, is the slew of chains and medallions he purchased to accessorize the outfit. Each chain seems to be competing to be the gaudiest, the shiniest and the biggest, and the combined weight would be enough to kill a man if dropped from a great height. When he rejoins his companions he states simply "The clothes are a little odd, but I really like the hat."

Per tradition, Hehsh does not bathe, instead taking the opportunity to question Toinks. "What can you tell us about your... master?" His face assumes it's reptilian passivity.
OOC:
Hehsh will carry the pearl of power in his pocket, along with his staff which he carries openly as though a walking stick.

Prepared, you enter the room at the end of the hallway. Toinks opens the door and holds it for you but does not enter. Stepping inside you see a powerful figure, an elf of ageless beauty.
[ +- ] da'Naro Illianstar
He had his back to you, but when you enter he turns and appraises you. His eyes flicker over your ensembles, before growing wide. With a gesture, Hasan's crossbow, Hehsh's Pearl, Mavis' dagger, Garth's staff/bracelet all glow brightly even those that are hidden.

"Thieves or pawns, explain yourselves."
Mar 14, 2020 3:07 am
Hehsh simply looks at him.

da'Norto growls, a deep base sound that rumbles the entire room. " THOSE WERE HERS! I HAVE SEEN THEM IN HER HOARD! HOW DID YOU COME BY THEM?"
Mar 15, 2020 2:29 am
Hehsh lets loose his best draconic roar. Anything it lacks in quality it certainly makes up for in volume. "How dare you! These were gifts. Hard won and freely given after a grave battle that cost many dearly. You think to accuse us?! We recieved these from the dragon Pananthys."

Mavis puts her hand up.
'cept me sir. I weren't in grave battle that cost me 'owt. Mistress Pananthys said mine were to assist in deeds t'come.
She smiles weakly, and half-shrugs. Self-aggrandisement is for halflings and humans, dwarves prefer honesty.
Mar 16, 2020 7:05 pm
The elf leans back and considers Hehsh for a moment. When he speaks, it is quiet, measured. "It is rare for her to give up anything from her collection. In fact, I have not heard of her doing so before. But I will admit that it isn't impossible. But why do you seem familiar, little one?" He adds in Draconic,

Hehsh growls low. He is actually calming down a little. Kind of. Not really. But he's got his volume under control. He speaks in common for the benefit of the party. "That name was given to me, to us, by the same dragon who gave us these treasures. I am Hehsh. Raised by the druids of Abilonie who found me in the woods on my own. I speak a language that I was never taught. I have powers, powers that are growing. I really, really, REALLY, like gold. I'm worried it might be a problem. And supposedly, I am the child of Mordenth."

He takes a deep breath. "Do I have your trust now?"

The elf closes his eyes, squeezes them shut. His manner calms. "I am Mordenth. I have had many romances over my vast life span. Siring a... child... is rare enough to count on one claw. I did not look to see it in you, I now see the resemblance of a woman I once knew. I see the truth of it."

Continuing to speak directly to Hehsh, he says, "You come on behalf of Pananthys, invoke the name of Albionii. What terrible trouble has brought this to be?"
Mar 17, 2020 4:46 pm
Hasan looks a little confused but understanding that the elf in front of us may have knowledge beyond Hasan's years. He does seem a bit confused how an elf sired Hehsh.

Hasan gives some quizzical looks between the party and the elven benefactor.

There is another empress marching to take over the world. I know in your vast life, you have seen hundreds.

He waits for affirmation

How many have you seen that took a dragon captive? Panathys was captured. We rescued her. She sent us to ask for your help rescuing her mate.

These items are heard items but they were gifted to us
Mar 18, 2020 4:03 am
He seems suitably unimpressed by "another empress" and snorts amusedly at Garth's characterization.

"Did she give you a key phrase to prove you work with her?"
Mar 18, 2020 5:58 am
Passwords! Mavis is pleased that she wore her secret agent dress.
Aye, she and thee met under light o’ moon in thunderstorm.
Mar 23, 2020 5:18 pm
"Well then. It seems your story is truer and truer. What do you propose we do? Wage war on this empress? Why would we become involved? Unless, does she still hold Pananthys or someone else captive?"
Mar 23, 2020 5:32 pm
OOC:

Going back to the beginning (which I'd forgotten).
Qralloq says:

"My mate, Veringvox, is missing. I suspect the Vermilion Reavers, but cannot be certain. Mordenth feared that he was being hunted, and I have grown to believe that these events are related. Find the wyrm Mordenth and find out what he knows. Then find Veringvox and free him. I promise you rewards worthy of the tasks, but more importantly, you will be greatly bolstering the defenses of these lands. I assure you, the Empress will not be as easily defeated as her warband in the desert was."
and da'Norto Illianstar is Mordenth.
It's interesting that he said "we". I wonder if that "we" is us and Illianstar - or whether he means Illianstar and Veringvox.

Nice work Adam
Veringvox is missing. We were told to ask you for any information you might have, or help you could give.

Mordenth/Illianstar stares hard at Hehsh. His eyes begun to burn, glowing yellow hot, like molten gold. "Then we have work you do. Go. Get your things. We're flying to the desert. Let's see about this empress."
OOC:
You've recruited a dragon to your cause. I say that's cause to level up!

We'll continue the adventure in a new thread. Further questions can be asked of the dragon during the journey.
