Adventure 1 - Delving into Godsskull

Oct 21, 2019 1:43 pm
The glow of torches or a fire give the cave entrance an ominous appearance, but the crack of thunder alongside the deluge of rain and battering of hail drove you to ignore your apprehension. Stepping past the precipice into the fanged mouth of the cave, several guards of what appears to be a merchant caravan approach, weapons drawn but not raised.

The lead guard, apparently a captain from his higher quality sword and more elaborately decorated armor, holds up a hand as the last of you steps out of the storm.

"Ho there! What brings such an...exotic group through Khelbane's Pass? Naught but Trade Guild merchants use this pass," the lead guard, his voice gruff and graveled, demands, his posture tense.

"Oh coin of Aengrist, calm down Captain!" calls out a woman from further in the camp.

Shoving aside several of the slower guard, a pale-skinned, silver-blonde human woman approached your group as she continued to berate the guard captain, "Despite what the Guild likes to claim, they do not own this pass, and this is the only shelter from that storm for leagues! So pipe down, and let them warm up by a fire! DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR?!"

Despite being a hair over five foot at most, the woman seemed to tower over the guard captain. Without a word, the guards began to sheathe swords and relax their posture.

Manneo stays silent as the others enter the cave. Even though the woman got the guards to relax, he still kept a good grip on his longaxe. I've been in worse storms than this when I was still up in the mountains. This is a light drizzle compared to them.

As he speaks Manneo can't help, but to notice the beauty that the human female possesses.
Oct 21, 2019 3:53 pm
A female Dragonborn: She looks to be in her later teens or possible early twenties. She is 6'2" and must weight around 300 pounds. She has dark blue scales that are almost violet for skin and it could easily be mistaken for black tone. Her eyes, golden hued, are a bit sunken and many times hard to see. She seems to have a charm about her for a dragonborn.

Dragonborn feet ended with three strong talon-like claws with a fourth claw in the back, while their hands were similar with three claws with a thumb replacing the rear claw. A dragonborn's head featured a blunt snout, a strong brow, and reptilian frills on the cheeks and ears. On the back of the head, a crest of hornlike scales formed what resembled a mess of ropy hair. That hair is like her scales, very dark bluish violet.

Description of Faerlin's gear: She wears blacken chain with a dark red tabard which has an open eye upon it. She has a amulet of the all seeing eye on a cord around her neck and waterskin over her shoulder. She holds a spear in a non-threatening manner in her hands. There is multiple weapons and such attacked to her backpack and a pouch to her side. She sports a dagger in her right side leg strap. She has a cloak with hood on protecting her from the elements.
__________________________________________________________________________________

Water dripping off her hooded cloak and a spear in her hands, Yes. The rain has been driving us hard. Some shelter would great. as she tosses back her hood exposing her face. Her gear marks her as religious.

Shooing the guards off, the woman turns to face you, barely blinking at the odd mix of races, "Pick a campfire and get yourselves warmed up, but start any trouble and you'll find that the guards aren't the dangerous ones." Her warning given, she turns and heads back to her own fire.

The interior of the cave is dotted by five large camp fires, though an unlit tunnel extends deeper into the mountain on the eastern wall. The majority of those surrounding the fires look to be humans, with an odd gnome or halfling and, most surprisingly, a single kenku sitting off on their own.
Oct 23, 2019 1:07 am
As you settle in around the camp fires, you catch bits of scattered conversations among those that were already in the cave.

"...ny idea? The tunnel wasn't here last time I came through..."

"...couldda sworn I heard a rockslide as we were settling in..."

"...seem more out there than usual? Just yesterday he was holding his amulet and cawing even more nonsense..."

Jahred took a moment, trying to decide who he was going to be, but something about the silver blonde haired woman told him he'd probably do best being himself. She seemed sharp, and her people on edge, and the young man had no desire to put his skills to the test needlessly. "Thank you for your hospitality, m'Lady, can't say I was expecting warmth in such an imposing edifice." He said giving her a brief but appropriate bow for someone of unknown, but clearly high status. "I think my companions would agree when I say we have no intention of learning how dangerous anyone here is, guards or otherwise."

He removed his pack and set it and his bow down beside Faerlin, the young man's slight and wiry frame was a study in contrast to his large and more imposing Dragonborn companion, and he gave a sigh of relief as he rid himself of the weight. He had left his finer clothes in his pack, and was thankful for his more comfortable, albeit simpler, common garb of greens and browns. Warming his hands by the fire he cast his eyes about the Lady's entourage taking in the details, these people were clearly on edge, and the Lady hadn't even waited around for introductions; of course, that could easily have been on account of them being beneath her concern beyond keeping her captain from embarrassing her.

Hearing the warning of their comrade, swarms of goblins come pouring out of the tunnel, the majority armed as the initial few but a few wearing more ornate garb.

As the majority of the goblins launch arrows into the bundles of people around campfires, the ornately dressed goblin raises a staff topped with a roughly hewn white crystal and lets out a short chant, "Kuzgath Kizath, orzuzak gukat!"

With a rumbling K-KRAK, the entire cave shakes as cracks form in the walls, floor, and ceiling. Stalactites at the entrance fall to the ground, shattering and splintering while further in the floor splits, forming crevices that could turn an unwary step into a broken leg.
OOC:
The entire cave is now considered difficult terrain, requiring double movement and the majority of the goblins are considered to be within dim light, so everyone without darkvision has disadvantage on attacks against them. Seeing this, the other goblins give a rallying cry as they swarm over the guards. For their part, the guards hold their ground, as do several members of the caravan.

As the goblin mage prepares to cast another spell, his chanting is interrupted by a yawn as he and three other goblins drop to the ground, snores emanating from them nearly louder than the thunder still rumbling outside.

Seeing that the battle, even with mystical aid, is turning against them, the remaining conscious goblins scurry back into the tunnel, abandoning the dead, dying, and sleeping where they are. Not looking a gift horse in the mouth, the guards swiftly take their blades and cut the throats of the still living goblins.

Glancing over Ranos, the knight looks like he is suppressing the urge to say something before moving over to Faerlin. Carefully moving her onto her back, he gripped the arrow where it met her scales.

"I'm sorry for this, but I cannot treat the injury with the arrow within it," with that, he pulled the arrow from out.

A soft blue glow emanates from his free hand, suffusing into the wound, muscle fibers knitting together. With a gasp, Faerlin regains consciousness.

Jahred had been ready to fire again, however the momentary dimming of light, the damage to the cave, and the downing of the closest person he had to a friend around here had distracted him. That wasn't the whole truth, but he needed to mull over what he had heard before he came to any conclusions.

His first priority was to check on Faerlin. Moving carefully through the damaged floor, he'd go to the Dragonborn's side and do his best to help her back to her feet. "You had me worried there for a moment." He said, before turning to the knight. "And for what it's worth, you have my thanks, Sir."

Looking up at the towering Dragonborn Ranos rests his chin in his clawed hand, "but what do they want? Did they tunnel in here? Where did they come from?" Kneeling on the ground, he opens a worn leather satchel at his side, removing various knick knacks including a chicken bone, a well-worn gambling die, and an oddly-shaped rock. "It stands for Bedarim Tarados. Heir to Count Ædrin Tarados," comes a patchwork of different voices and pieced together words and sentences.

Turning around, the speaker is the kenku from before, head twitching and fingers scratching at exposed skin plucked of feathers. Around the kenku's neck is an amulet with a carving of an eye.

"Mistress demands the patsies deaths. Rest have heard too much."

Unnerved by the words coming from the kenku, the woman cautiously asked, "Creak...what are you saying?"

"...die," was all he said in response before opening his beak wide and with a shrieking cackle, twin emerald beams shot out from within. One curled around and dug into the ceiling above the cave entrance, bringing down rock and debris, while the other continued onward and impacted the goblin's head, the force turning its target into paste.

With a cry akin to the raven he resembled, the kenku leapt over the gathered crowd and clung to the ceiling. Moving on all fours like a feathered, demented spider, it scurried down the tunnel into the mountain, it's cries echoing all the way.

Nov 5, 2019 7:20 pm
"Damn it all!" Jahred exclaimed as more rubble came down from the ceiling. The goblin was dead, which probably saved them the trouble of doing the deed themselves, but had they gotten enough information out of it? He surveyed the damage, particularly to the entrance of the cave they were in before bringing his attention back to the woman he had not realized had approached. "I think the goblin was referring to a Blood Tome, I'm guessing one tied to Tarados based on what Creak said, does that mean anything to you?" He asked. All they wanted was shelter from the storm, and this felt like a textbook application of the saying out of the frying pan and into the fire.

"We knew that Creak was crazy, always muttering to himself and petting that amulet he called mistress, but nothing like this, I've never even heard of a Tarados family!" the woman all but shrieked.

"I have," the Frosthorne knight growled, staring into the darkness of the tunnel.

Turning back to face the rest of the group, he continued, fury etched into his features, "A some months ago, the Count Tarados and his family were butchered and their Blood Tome stolen. All the evidence pointed towards a rantar and goliath, but after everything the goblin said and Creak mentioning 'patsies' I have my doubts."

From the now collapsed entrance, one of the guards calls for help moving the rubble. Despite initial concerns, it seems that the rubble can be cleared enough that in a few hours it will be clear. If Creak and the goblins give you enough time.

Jahred nodded in agreement with the knight. "I think you're right, during the commotion with the goblins I overheard Creak muttering something along the lines of "Rantar and Goliath, ones to take the blame." Then he went on about his mistress." The young man was lost in thought for a brief moment before he added. "I'm not terribly familiar in matters of the arcane, but as I understand it there's no known way to fool a Blood Tome, so if this book is important, my guess is they wish to find out who among the Tarados family yet lives... unless there are other uses for such an item?" This last part was said more as an inquiry, with his gaze directed towards Ranos.

OOC:
In both cases, you really only started researching the topics since you were framed a few months back. The history of a noble family is much easier to find information on than an extremely expensive, extremely rare magical artifact.

History: The Tarados family was founded roughly two hundred seventy years ago, by Sir Marwin Tarados the Emerald Knight. A hedge knight that was granted a small keep overlooking the then border between the Ahrist Kingdom and the Elves of Creakview, the new Lord Tarados managed to secure several profitable trade deals with his elven neighbors, elevating his family to the rank of Count.

The Tarados family has seen several ups and downs over the centuries, with a scandal seventy years ago when the then Count and Countess had a seventh child (which in humans always results in a sorcerer/ess) and the recent massacre securing its current fortunes in a 'down' period. The sole surviving member is the new Countess Modwen Tarados, who has been rather actively leading the charge in hunting down those that murdered her family.

Countess Modwen has spent most of her time since taking the title in the capital of Rustcreek pressuring the Frosthorne Knights and other such organizations, while Seneschal Narkax (a green dragonborn who had the fortune to study at the Ahrist University in Crabport) has overseen the county in her absence. The Green Scale Mercenary Company (almost exclusively composed of green dragonborn) has been hired by Seneschal Narkax to aid the guard in enforcing law and order.

Arcana: To the best of your studies there have been no means of fooling or tricking a Blood Tome, but when a family dies out there are rituals to shift it to a new family.

Glancing down the tunnel, the woman frowned, some of her previous spirit returning to her.

"I don't know what's down there. Ideally we would clear out the entrance and leave as soon as the storm let up enough for us to do so. But we need to know how many goblins Creak can send at us. If it becomes necessary, we can collapse the tunnel on them."

Turning to face the rest of the caravan, she calls out, not yelling, but her voice carries throughout the entire cave, "I need volunteers. While we clear out the rubble, a group needs to go down into the tunnel to learn how many goblins can come back to attack a second time."
Nov 15, 2019 2:34 pm
From the crowd you hear I will go.

Approaching the group you see a slightly built elf, lithe and slim, standing before you just over five feet tall. His honey blonde hair is neatly combed and tied back with a silver clasp to reveal a handsome coppery brown face featuring high cheekbones, large almond shaped eyes the with irises the color of a green leaf turning golden at the start of autumn. Long pointed ears, indicative of his wood elf race, poke out from his hair. His full lips part, in a wide grin displaying flash of brilliant white teeth.

Clad in brown studded leather armor with embossed designs depicting whorls and abstract forms of animals interlocked around branches of the mythic World Tree, and armed with a fine slim blade bearing an elaborate hilt with a gilded basket wrought like the antlers of a hart, and carrying a small heater shield emblazoned with the device of deer horns in gold on a field of green, the warrior is marked as a sylvan knight. As is typical for most wood elves, the knight-errant also bears a longbow worn across his back and a quiver of long shafted arrows tipped with broad points in a tooled leather quiver. Opposite his rapier, hangs a long curved dagger with a handle of carved antler.

A silver chain with a starburst pendant hangs from his neck, and on his right index finger is a golden ring also carrying the same device as his shield.

Under his armor, the elvish knight wears a dark green finely wrought silken tunic with embroidered leaves in golden thread, and lighter green woolen hose. His feet are shod in low soft doeskin boots also dyed a dark green. On his back is a pack laden with supplies for a long journey. Over all of this the elf wears a thin grey hooded cloak as protection from the elements.

With a polite bow, he regards you and introduces himself I am Meneloss.

Leaning down, Ranos once again removes this sachet of curios and, closing his eyes, tosses them into the dirt. Opening his eyes, he examines them closely, his mouth moving but no sounds leave his lips. After a couple of seconds the mischievous smile appears on the rantar's face again, "eggcellents! Errr, excellent!" He turns toward the tunnels, stuffing this knick-knacks back into their pouch, "we alls should gets moving".

I have to leave for work, so a short bit now, with a longer followup later today.
As you slowly make your way into the tunnel, gingerly stepping over loose rubble, the glow of light from Faerlin's spell illuminates the walls of the tunnel. Your steps echo off the walls, leading deeper in.

The initial passageway seems clear, before narrowing sharply, only allowing one or two to pass at a time. As you step through, your eyes fall upon a rock formation that vaguely looks like a body slumped over a horse.

Faerlin leads the way and cautiously approaches the odd rock formation of a body slumped over a horse with keen interest.
Nov 19, 2019 1:43 am
As you make your way further in, almost immediately to your right is a small passageway that dead ends, filled with barrels and a chest. Apparently used by the goblins for storage. From there the tunnel splits into two directions, one moving straight ahead, and to the left is apparently where the majority of the goblins reside.

To your fortune, the goblins don't seem to have noticed you, gathered around a central figure in the center of the room. To your shock, somehow the goblins managed to "tame" a massive bug, nearly the size of Wahuhi. Its massive mandibles look large enough to snap a tree in two, its legs are covered in barbs and hooks, perfect for snagging prey.

Behind the chanting and cheering goblins, two children huddle in fear.
OOC:
Forgot to mention, but yes, Faerlin is fully healed.

As for the Perception checks, due to both Faerlin and Meneloss scoring so well, I'm treating it as getting the drop on the goblins. So surprise round! As Ranos casts his spell, three of the seven goblins shriek as the grease causes them to slip and fall onto their backs, an arrow flying over one of the goblins as it fell while another found its mark in the neck of one of the goblins that remained standing. As the goblins and bug slip and slide, Farlin runs to the side of the group and, glowing holy symbol in hand, opens her mouth to let loose a blast of lightning, catching all but two of the goblins.

The goblins shriek in pain, one of which collapses in a charred, shaking mass. With a sound like a mix of skittering and hissing, the bug puts its legs under it, forcing itself upright. Spotting the closest target, it lets out a shriek before spitting out a line of oozing green liquid. Some of the liquid lands on the goblin between it and Faerlin, causing it to shriek in terrified agony for a moment, before it falls to the ground, a hole in its head where the liquid landed.

The goblin's cheer at seeing it hit an elf was short lived, as the returning shot pierced its right eye, burrowing through the socket into the brain. Collapsing like a puppet with its string cut, the force of the arrow drove the goblin to land with a loud CRACK as the back of its skull split upon on the point of a small stalagmite.

The remaining goblin, seeing its fortunes change so quickly, ran across the cavern to a group of barrels, smashing one open with its short sword and dove face first into whatever liquid did not spill out onto the floor. After a moment, the goblin brings its head back out with a gasp as it falls to its back before its eyes nearly fall out of its head and its mouth opens in a silent scream.

Bones pop, flesh rips, teeth fall out and regrow, muscles bubble and writhe, as the goblin turns over, coughing out the teeth that fell into its throat. Its formerly yellow-brown skin turns green and coarse, and as it stands upright what initially appear to be organs soon reveal to be some sort of fruit or vegetable.

I owe you a serious apology, I read it when it first came up, but when I went back to fill in the next post I somehow missed it. The firebolt missed, and we are at the tail end of round 1. Unless I am mistaken (which given the first part of this post is a possibility) Faerlin's all that's left of round 1, then it cycles back to an NPC slot.

The bug is not a beast, so no bonus favored enemy damage, but the arrow still hits.

The small orb of fire connects with the terrified, screaming goblin, rather unexpectedly entering the creature's open maw. The goblin's eyes widen and its mouth closes in shock, before dropping to the ground, clutching at its neck as it gasps and wheezes.

Meanwhile, the bug lets out a screeching hiss as Faerlin rushes in, warhammer smashing into one of its legs. Hiss/wailing in pain, it lashes out in retaliation, mandibles open wide. Closing around Faerlin, it picks the dragonborn up and begins to shake its head back and forth, drops of acid from its earlier attack sinking into armor and scales.

Trapped in the oversized mandibles of the bug, Faerlin frantically tries to smash her way free, but finds herself unable to find a decent angle as it all but tosses her back and forth.

Meanwhile, Jahred slips into the cave and launches an arrow into the skull of the mutated goblin before slipping into the shadows. The goblin goes cross-eyed as it looks at the arrow head sticking out of its forehead, yet whatever foul concoction it drank keeps it upright.

As the mutated goblin reaches up to pull the arrow out of its skull, Meneloss's rapier finds its way into its throat, passing through the mix of flesh and plant matter to sever what remained of the spine. As it dropped to the ground, a bolt of fire flies past them to impact the bug.

Dropping Faerin as it screeched in pain, the bug shakes and twitches on unsteady legs before falling to the side, prompting the two children in the corner to scream as it collapses in their direction. On the ground, the bug gives one last shake before falling still.

"A-are they dead?" the older looking of the two children, a human girl no older than twelve, asks.

Jahred slung his bow over his shoulder and entered the room proper before going to the barrel the mutated goblin had smashed open. "Not that I was aware." He said to Ranos as he eyed the broken barrel suspiciously, alchemy was not his forte, though the subject fascinated him. "But we didn't exactly explore that line of questioning with the goblin earlier."

Nope, Meneloss did not need the smite.
To his surprise, the girl flinched away from Meneloss's offered hand, turning her body slightly, as if trying to use her body to protect the other child, another human girl no older than seven.

His face falls, "little ones, mes thinks dats yous ones are not naughty girls, but I cans tell you dat dee gobbos are very naughty but wes know hows to deal with the real naughty ones." He turns to his comrades, "she says dat their village was attacked by Drow. Well, nots quite true; she ashually said 'elves with white hair and black skin' but dat has to be Drow but whats are they doing aboves the earth?" His small clawed hand cups his chin momentarily, his eyes distant before he continues, "she den says dat a knight rescued dems and dee knight had a big book and was escorting dems before dee gobbos attacked and killed the knight, taking them boths and the book to zis cave. Deys says dat was 'bout two sleeps ago."

He moves back towards the children, taking a couple of hard candies from his bag and handing one each to the children. "Did dis green man you talked 'bout looks kinda likes my partner here?" he asks, pointing at Faerlin. "I tink dah book was taken by a green Dragonborn from what dee kids were sayins."
OOC:
Without overwhelming the children too much, Ranos also wants to ask them about:
1. The Knight's order or at least what the favor looked like or colors they wore.
2. If they have seen the goblins putting anyone else or anything else into the alchemical goop.
3. If a bird person named Creak had been seen by them while they've been here.
4. If the green person's name was anything like "Ganzath Korth" or "Tazarzak Korth".

Drow? says Meneloss, rubbing his chin in disbelief. The elf slings his shield and then retrieves his longbow.

Dec 6, 2019 2:37 am
OOC:
In order of the questions:

Yes, but Faerlin lacks a tail (there are specific in-universe lore reasons for this, but very few dragonborn have tails and those that do never have a parent without one).

They don't know the order, but he wore bright green and his shield had a green gem painted on it.

The dragonborn brought the kegs of alchemical goop in exchange for the book, but the goblins had been too afraid to drink it before now.

Just before the group showed up, a demented looking bird-man shouted at the surviving goblins then made his way deeper into the caverns.

They don't know.

The only goblins they saw make up the dead here and that attacked the caravan.

Jahred's initial surprise at Ranos communicating with him via magic was quickly overshadowed by the horror and revulsion he felt at the Rantar's explanation. Thankful he was facing away from the children he took a moment to steel his face, thankful, for once, of his father's teachings. "Hopefully the others can care for them." He said softly. While he hadn't had any hesitation in the recent fights with the goblins, he knew he'd lack any sort of sympathy for the monsters from here on out, knowing what he knew about them, they made vermin sound appealing.

A series of banging sounds begins from within the cave, the sharp metallic shrieking as hinges break and the sound of heavy chains falling flat to the gritty cavern floor. With a slam, a goblin corpse goes flying into a totem of small bones and other filth, located deeper in the cave. A booming voice comes roaring out, bouncing off the empty walls. "Okay you horrid monsters, I'm done with my nap!" A figure comes toward a torch-flame, grabbing the oil-soak stick and lifting it towards the greater area. She was disheveled but seemingly uninjured, but the firelight failing to reveal her foe she stumbled forward looking for her things, realizing then that it was quiet inside. She looked around finding her gear, much to her dismay scattered about. They had destroyed some of her things, potions included and spread filth upon her holy symbol, but the goblins themselves seems to be dead now.

When she wandered up to the cave to just wanted to check for evil... well she found it! Too bad she was jumped and poisoned. Having been dragged back into a dead-end where she wonders if they were going to carve her up for food. Thankfully some heroes must have come. About this time she had grabbed her shield in one hand and quarterstaff in the other. She had other weapons and gear but was ready to see how'd saved her apparently by chance.

Faerlin's light spell still shines brightly, illuminating the hall of rock and stone.

To the left, a giant of a woman makes her way out of a small passageway filled with rubble and loose stones. To the right, a large cavern with a collapsed wall, gaps leading beyond maybe large enough to allow a goblin child through but nothing larger.

No immediate signs of Creak's passage can be seen.

Jahred moved with the others, his bow at the ready, and an arrow in hand to be nocked and let loose at a moments notice. There was a moment of tension as the giant emerged from the passage to the left, but when she didn't attack, and indeed seemed to hold the goblins with disdain, he chuckled and smiled. "But come on back if you want to squish some of the little bastards." he said after Faerlin gave the directions to the firbolg.

Turning to look at the mound of rubble and the tiny and unlikely passage through, Jahred noticed a feather drifting down from above, not taking any chances, he lunged to the side while nocking his bow and aiming up at the ceiling. The blue-scaled dragonborn was kind to offer, but Anice was here for smashing up hateful monsters that disgraced the sanctity of life. It was simply fated that they must meet in such a place. With the archer cutting to the chase, she nodding immediately, wanting to thank them for rescuing the children when she could not, Anise was just about to try to get a summary of what had happened while she was out, but there seemed a lot was happening at once. She, as well, saw the feather, but not knowing what she was looking, Anice lifted her shield instinctually to Jahred’s warning. A warm sultry rasp to her voice claiming, as a matter of fact, "I’m here to fight evil… What of you?" She was addressing the adventures, but her eyes searched for whatever the archer had launches fire upon, unsure what goblin had feathers.

Pleased that the others had acted so quickly, as while her own intuition was correct to lead her this way, she was no match for what she found within. "My name is Anise... thank you, heroes, for their and my rescue." In thanks, she felt obligated to give a reward. "Please accept this healing, in appreciation."

"Pleased to be having the healings, Anises. We should goes now before its awakens."

Ranos turns to follows Faerlin back towards the caravan, his feet making soft padding noises along the floor.
Jan 4, 2020 9:56 pm
As the group hauls the still unconscious Creak into the main cavern, the lead woman spots you first and makes her way over after gently setting down Lily (the younger girl from before) from her lap onto the cot-like chair she had been sitting in. Spotting the movement, the Frosthorne knight also makes his way over, hand tight against the hilt of a hunting knife still in its sheathe.

Barely taking the time to notice Anaise, the woman grabs Creak by his beak and, in a surprising display of strength, single handedly drags the bird over to a firepit, the members of the caravan that were warming up deciding to help with moving the rock out of the entrance way.

Unsurprisingly, the rough treatment caused Creak to regain consciousness, just in time for her to shove his face next to the fire, the threat apparent in her voice, "Now then Creak, you are going to tell us everything that we want to know. I see even a hint of anything but words coming out of that beak of yours we'll see just how flammable your remaining feather are. Am I clear?"

Despite the position he was in, Creak's whole body shook with restrained laughter, as privy to some elaborate joke that no one else was aware of.

"Stupid human tykekt. I don't know what's funnier. The fact that YOU THink that your albino flat-face intimidates me, or the fact that you think my Mistress would LET ME LIVE if you did!"
OOC:
Sorry for going quiet for almost a week, work has been exhausting combined with adjusting my sleep schedule in preparation for night classes later this month. In any event, here's an update with Creak channeling Jan Valentine from Hellsing Ultimate Abridged.
Jan 6, 2020 3:15 pm
Can I just kill the bird? He's more annoying than helpful. I say, drawing a sword.
Jan 6, 2020 5:29 pm
That may happen just the same she says as she moves with her bundle.

As the healing magics washed over him and mended the wound completely Jahred smiled up at Anise. "Thank you for that." He said offering his hand. "I'm Jahred, can't say I expected seeking shelter from a storm to lead to such... excitement. Looks like you've seen your share already as well." He said as he slung his pack over his shoulders and began to follow the others back to the cave entrance.

On the way he'd catch the newcomer up on what had been going on, the goblin attack on the camp, Creak's betrayal, the book that tracked a noble house's lineage flawlessly, the fight with the goblins and the bug wherein one used a foul alchemical concoction to turn into some sort of pustule riddled mutant, he faltered when he got to the explanation of the child. "The concoction they made her drink... it... there's something growing inside of her." He said, his voice cold and quiet, both so that the conversation didn't interrupt the interrogation, and so that anyone who didn't know and didn't need to know overheard. "The rest you know. I'm not a wrathful sort, and tend to prefer talking my way out of a fight, but damned if I won't at least help make sure those goblins pay."

"While you alls git information out of... dat one...", he says, pointing to Creak, "I will bes identifying dis amulet." He rifles through his pouches, his head nearly completely in the travel pack he had tossed onto the ground. "Hmmm... I will needs two components to cast dis rituals; one owl feathers and one pearl wurt at least 100 golds." He turns to all the gathered people, "nothings will be used up in dah casting, I just needs it for focusing on."

OOC:
So does anyone want to actually question Creak, or just kill him and be done with it?
Jan 8, 2020 5:25 am
OOC:
I definitely think that it would behoove the party to talk to him, I only haven't taken the lead on it because I took the lead on talking to the girls and I didn't want to step on any toes.
Jan 8, 2020 6:27 am
Anise was taken back by the casual manner by which the others spoke of killing. Were it a different circumstance she would admonish them for their callousness, but what they were talking about was a creature who had by their account poisoned and therein corrupted the body of one of the children. He seemed to wish to do evil things. She was conflicted but this whole matter was too big for her way of thought.
OOC:
please take the lead!

Honestly, I'm having a hard time thinking of questions to ask that weren't already covered when we questioned the goblin spellcaster. Suffering from a case of my character being smarter than I am. :-P

Using Prestidigitation to make his voice boom throughout the cave, Ranos marches over to Creak, then slaps the birdman a couple of times with his furry paws and grabs him by the back of the head, his eyes full of malice. "Dats enough! If dah birdman don't tell us who der workin' for and where they is and what deys are guns do next, it won't be deaths that takes you. Not for a very long time, anyways." He steps back and takes a deep breath, looking the Kenku in the eye, "'Cause I'mma gives you over to my friends here", he points at Wahuhi and Faerlin, "wits vury non-specific instructions about what to do to yas, except just to... how do you say? 'Draws it out fer a while'?"

Winking at Anise, he casts Message:

I am using Intimation and using my Portent roll of 19. That gives my Intimation roll a whopping... 19! :P

Trying to make this short and sweet so we can move on, sorry folks!

Faerlin acts rather aggressively toward the Creak to further Ranos attempts to get further information.

Attempting to aid
Jan 10, 2020 5:17 pm
OOC:
Aid action would allow me to roll with advantage, so I am going to do that and if I get some horrible rolls I will use my Portent with 19.

I also realized that it's not Prestidigitation that does the voice booming thing, it's Thumaturgy, which I do not have so instead I make a shower of flames and make any campfires or torches around us bustle in the wind like some kind of energy is coming from me. You know, make a show of it.

Edit: loooooool yeah, let's use that 19. :P

Too late now! lol
Anise wasn't sure what the adorable little raccoon person was meaning by the wink, but the following attempt at intimidation, caused the young giant woman's posture to melt, eyes worked over in a daze. "... You. Are. So. Cute! With your fuzzy face and those little paws! Oh, oh! Look at those toe-beans! What is your name? Please keep talking... don't you love when he talks like that?!" Anise looks around to the rest of the gathered people, fully expecting others to agree with her wholeheartedly.

Staring at the snarling rantar half his size, Creak's beak opened, "My Mistre-"

As he began to speak, he was cut off with a loud shriek of pain as he thrashed in his bonds. A green glow, the same as the beams of energy he had been launching from his beak not an hour before, suffused his body as a woman's cackle filled the air.

Naughty, naughty bird, telling on the one whom holds your chain? If you will not do my bidding, then I will take back what is mine!

As the woman's voice echoed throughout the cave, the light surrounding Creak vanished, causing the kenku to collapse to the ground. A quick examination showed that while he still lived, nothing seemed to draw a reaction from him.

Meribson sent a note to Raddue
Thoroughly spooked and confused, the silver-haired woman nudged the unresponsive Creak a few times with her foot, before shuddering in a mix of nerves and release of adrenaline. Stepping away from the comatose bird, she turned to face the group, "While I don't have the answers I'd like, you've done better than I could have anticipated. While I cannot part with any of the goods for this supply run, I do have a few personal effects that I can offer in thanks."

Moving over to one of the wagons, after taking a moment to try to calm a few worried souls, she opened a trunk and pulled out a few items before returning. In her hands are a few pieces of jewelry and a feather quill.

"I heard your request, young wizard. This quill is made from the wing feather of a breed of owl my brother breeds for falconry. In addition, at least a few of the pearls on this necklace should be worth the amount you need. The rest, I give to you along with my gratitude. Should you find yourselves in need of lodging in Duskhallow, tell the folks at the Trade Guild that Martaris Illenn Soryth holds you in her favor."
OOC:
Dawned on me that you guys are level 3, almost level 4 and haven't gotten any serious loot yet. So in addition to supplying the reagents that Ranos needs, she gave you guys some rings, earrings, and bracelets worth a combined 800 gold as well as a less material reward..
Jan 13, 2020 4:26 am
With a sad glance back at Creak, Ranos says, "it appearses as our friend has lost der patron and thus der powers, too. Mayhaps nows that we be dah only ones that can help its, it will helps us by answering dah questions?" Looking at Faerlin the rantar wrings his hands and says, "we should probablies keep Creak tied up so dey don't try and a'scape."

"Dah Fates and I thanks you, Martaris Illenn Soryth, fors yer hospitalities." Taking the pearls and the feathers, the little rantar takes his dagger, chalk, the amulet and his fate bag and starts preparing to cast the Identify spell on the amulet.
OOC:
As a wizard, I have the spell in my spellbook so I should just need to take 10 minutes to cast it in order for the Identify spell to work without having to expend a spell slot if I am remembering this properly. The amulet nor the components will be used up during this ritual casting.

Rolls

Arcana for who the "Mistress" is - (1d20+5)

(13) + 5 = 18

Jan 13, 2020 5:26 pm
OOC:
Faerlin is level 2 at the moment. I'm guessing I missed taking her to level 3. Should I advance Faerlin to level 3 now?
Jan 14, 2020 1:47 am
OOC:
Regarding the Amulet: It's a one-way scrying focus. Who/whatever is at the other end can, with some focus, see from the eye engraving in the middle of the amulet. With a little tweaking, you can devise a modified ritual to track the connection, leading you right to the one on the other end, likely this Mistress that Creak refers to. Though there doesn't seem to be any real limit on how far the amulet can be separate from the other end, it otherwise functions like a normal eye. Stuff it in a bag and all that they'll be seeing is the inside of the bag.

Yes, level up Faerlin.
Jan 14, 2020 8:04 pm
OOC:
LOL she was level 3, but forgot to change the level indicator.

Jahred had his rapier out when he heard that voice emanating from Creak in a manner that was most definitely not in keeping with his usual speech. When the light faded away, he found himself more than a little relieved, given the memory of what those beams had been able to inflict. Returning his weapon to his sheath he accepted his payment with a proper bow. "Yes, thank you for your hospitality as well." He said, offering a smile before he glanced in the direction of the two children. "They'll be cared for, I trust?" While there were other mysteries this night that would plague his mind, he was particularly concerned about the children, especially given what the goblins had done.
Jan 16, 2020 2:30 am
Seeing where Jahred's gaze led, the normally steely eyes on Illen's face softened, "I can't bring back what they've lost, but I know several priests and alchemists able to help undo what the goblins did to her. As for the rest, I make enough with the Trade Guild to ensure that they're looked after. If necessary I'll take them in myself."
OOC:
With that, the first adventure is concluded. Feel free to post character interactions, but Saturday morning I will be posting the opening post for the next adventure: Corruption in the Woods.
Jan 16, 2020 2:43 am
Excellent. I'm looking forward to it!
