Chapter 6: The Hunter and the Prey

Elora tries to get a good look through the windows for whatever is making that rumbling, but can only see darkness, and fire, lots of fire. "I concur, but there's...something on the other side of the river Ember, I'm not sure what exactly."
Nov 15, 2019 11:59 pm
Ember tries to figure out what's going on before moving away. She stays between Elora and the fire.

If something goes wrong, you RUN, okay?

Elora stays right next to Ember as they escape to the bridge, not daring to look back. "Yes, I wi-... you're running too right?"
Nov 16, 2019 12:53 am
Ember glances back at her, a faint crackling of......frost? starting on her hands. There's a twinkle in her dark eye.

That's the first plan, at least.

Seeing the opportunity to end the creature while he is vulnerable, Yelnar steps towards the fire in order to deal a blow.

"If you are injured or helping someone who is, pull back while it lies on the floor, I can help this misbegotten creature find peace!"
OOC:
(still can't move on the map for some reason - V9 is where he moves to - attack is unlikely to hit even with the prone debuff)

Passes the save against the fire. Will make two AoO rolls, since standing up from prone provokes, and it may well decide to move away from the fire. 2nd AoO may hit if he gets it.

Oops, that square reference was meant to be V9

Despite being prone, the hunter still has its ways of defending itself and even fighting back. As Yelnar slashes, the hunter knocks his swing just barely off balance with one tentacle arm. Sensing that its greatest danger lies from the man with the bardiche, it doubles its attacks against Yelnar, not bothering to stand up.

Both attacks rebound harmlessly from Yelnar's armor, striking only glancing blows that do no damage.
OOC:
Everyone else is up in any order -- Verrian, Swan, Coreene, Wil, Eanala. I'll Swanbot after the other PCs go.

Hunter is still prone. I repeat, hunter is still prone. :)
It's becoming clearer to all involved what the people on the other side of the bridge are wondering about. From the direction they all look, a growing rumbling can be heard. You can even start to feel the earth trembling a bit under your feet.
OOC:
Anyone looking off in that direction, please give me a Perception check.

While the hunter is able to twist away from Verrian’s attack and Swan has a difficult time finding his mark. Still, Wil and Coreene take advantage and continue battering at it.

Eanala takes her opportunity to slash once more at the hunter, but the hunter blocks the attack with an arm.

Yelnar is frustrated that no-one listened when he asked them to go help the others. Do they lack confidence in his abilities? Had he not been hurting this thing?

Yelnar shakes his head, knowing that he can't get distracted here. If they want to continue attacking this thing, he'll have to kill it to free their minds. His attack goes well wide, clearly allowing himself to be distracted.

He hears the rumbling but cannot take his attention from the creature.

"Get back, help the others, help with whatever that sound is, I'll join you when I can!"
he shouts, hoping to be heard amidst this madness.

He turns back to the creature and says "I’m thinking you’re used to fighting magic types that don’t know how to fight. Hell, you ain’t even hit me once. I’m going to kill you and mount your head on my wall."

Yelnar is unable to remain in position to threaten the creature and avoid the flames, so he once again steels himself against the heat and hopes at least some of the others move on.

People are starting to move back over the bridge, back toward the fire and the hunter. Whatever is rumbling over there is enough to make people worry.

The hunter tries to climb to its feet and hammer at Yelnar.
OOC:
AoO from Yelnar misses. Verrian, Wil, Coreene and Eanala all get AoOs. If it is still alive after that, Yelnar will take damage.
No more +4 due to prone.

The hunter still stands, though watching it, you can see that whatever force holds it together is starting to fail. It twitches, moving in weird jerks, fits and starts, remarkably unlike the graceful, fluid way it has moved in the past. It communicates in no intelligible form of speech, only broken, screeching whistles and shrieks. Its 'skin' is starting to flake and splinter, all of it slowly turning the oily black color of the mottled patches.

It no longer seems threatening, its tentacles starting to shrink back into its body. It pays no further attention to the party and tries to stalk forward toward the bridge, even though Coreene is in front of it.

As people start coming back across the bridge, the rumbling you hear in the distance is becoming far more pronounced. You can feel it vibrating up from the ground, and even makes you feel a little unsteady on your feet. Nearly all of the buildings around you are on fire, only the street the majority of the party came in on and the bridge across the river currently safe to travel.
OOC:
Yelnar, Ember and Elora are up in any order.
