OOC:
On second thought, I want to err on the side of the players when my own action is partly to blame. Let's say Nekurr and Hildar are buffed; Nera and Tronus are not. (Bruv has a separate augment he cast on himself.) So, 3 threat on this check. Still not great, but not 4. ;) Full IC post soon.

OOC:
OK, so there are tons of status effects going on now, so please be sure to review the "spoiler" and initiative order so you can account for everything that might affect you. I've added some additional modifiers to Nekurr's spell that were overlooked: darkness, a setback from Hildar's threat (a setback on all magic until his next turn ends), and the mayor's counterspell). The result is that Nekurr fails his check with 1 Threat, which I will use to inflict 2 strain or 1 wound on Nekurr (CESN's choice).
As clouds move back over the moon, the area returns to near darkness. Nekurr prays to his goddess to slow down the scarecrow, and the creature knocks a flask off a shelf. It shatters onto the floor, which seems to trigger a spark, but it fails to ignite. Nevertheless, the Half-Catfolk feels the effort of the casting take its toll...

In what used to be the drawing room, Bruv and Tronus hear what sounds like someone rustling through a pile of straw. But a quick glance through the darkened room reveals that it's another one of the animated straw men coming through the door...
OOC:
That puts us back around to a PC. Again, note all the buffs and debuffs in effect: +2 setbacks from darkness, +1 setback on magic, +1 auto-upgrade on magic to name just a few.

Tronus keeps on his target, "Nekurr figured you out and he doesn't really pay attention to anything and now you want to run from him? From Nekurr? Nekurr come here and rough this sorry boy up. I'll hold him down." he grunts out while chasing down his quarry.
OOC:
melee failed three people lowest stain preferably gain back 1 strain and have a boost die for 2 rounds.

Beautiful. Probably best to use it for Hildar, Nekurr, and Bruv: You all gain 1 strain back, and you get +1 boost for your next 2 turns.

I'll inflict +1 strain on Tronus for the threat (so total of 2 this turn).
The mayor seems to chuckle at Tronus's taunt as he narrowly dodges the Dwarf's sword thrusts. "Nice try, outlanders." He starts toward the back door, muttering some sort of prayer as he does so.
OOC:
Setbacks for Bruv's Defense, for darkness, and for Hildar's magical anti-energy until his turn. Does Bruv want to use Dodge? If so, I'll re-roll the purples as reds.
OOC:
GM edit: upgrading difficulty per Dodge 2.

Makes sense for Hildar to go next and, hopefully, get rid of the setback he's generating
Hildar quickly tries to draw on his reserves, training, and dumb luck and levels his wand at the mayor as he steps towards him.
OOC:
Ok, I'm assuming he moved to Medium range so I'll use a Manoeuvre to close to Short. Going to Do an Attack spell with the Deadly additional effect.

Base difficulty would be 2 x Difficulty dice, upgraded 3 times due to Adversary and Counterspell puts it at 2 x Challenge 1 x Difficulty dice. 5 x Setbacks due to Fear, Darkness and me futzing with the Magic. Add a green from Nekurr and a Boost from Tronus.
Total check will be against 3 x Yellow, 2 x Green, 1 x Blue, 2 x Red, 1 x Purple, 5 x Black (I think......)

Have popped his Heroic Ability as well just in case....ok, the Heroic cancels out the Difficulty die with the Threat on.

Damage from the spell is 8 points total (4 Int, +3 Wand, 1 Success)

Yes, I'll use Dodge. 2 Strain for 2 upgrades to Diff.

OOC:
OK, so Mayor Wayland moved toward the doorway, then cast. Ends up with 1 Success, 1 Advantage, 1 Triumph. Net result is 9 damage (before Soak). Bruv is not wielding a shield, so Block doesn't apply. He'll use the Triumph to activate Ensnare 3. Will use the advantage for Strain recovery. Then mayor uses second maneuver to exit through the doorway behind the house.
Bruv feels an intense pain and pressure inside, like his entire body is being stuffed with straw. The Orc finds himself unable to move, and then realizes he's somehow been tied to a wooden post, arms outstretched like a scarecrow.

Before Wayland can make it out the door, Hildar's wand shoots another jolt of energy. At the last second, the scarecrow near the door jumps into the way, and the blast hits the creature in another shower of straw.
OOC:
Since the mayor had to drop his counterspell to move twice, Hildar doesn't need to add that extra purple.
Jan 18, 2021 6:03 pm
The straw creature opens its canvas maw in what should be a roar, but only a hiss escapes from its cruel approximation of a face. The creature lurches forward toward Hildar, source of its most recent injury. The scarecrow rakes at the Elf with its sickle hands, but Hildar narrowly dodges, feeling only a chill gust of air...
OOC:
Brawl attack on Hildar incoming. Failed! 1 Threat on this guy. How to spend?

Then two PCs are up. Let me know if you want Nera to try to hit the mayor with her ability that makes him suffer strain every time he takes a maneuver (and whether she should spend a SP on the attempt). He's obviously trying to flee now.

So is the Mayor at Medium to me? Was Short then moved to door...

I'll cast an Attack Spell at him assuming Medium, and guess we can take off the last P if not...
They can't let the Mayor escape, he could turn the whole town completely against them at which point they'd have a real mess...

Bruv, heedless of his restraint, draws upon the primal energies of the land and sends an arcing bolt of cracking energy to try to stop the man's escape...
OOC:
Primal+Augment+Boost is YYGGGGB, diff is Easy+Medium Range(?)+Empowered+Adversary 2+darkness for RRPPKK.

Here goes nothing!

Ok, well if that stands, that's 13 damage, and I'll recover a Strain with Advantage.
OOC:
GM edit: He's through the door, so that's additional concealment and cover. Same result, only 12 damage.

A startle from beyond the doorframe tells Bruv his spirits have hit home. The mayor seems to scramble to regain his footing as he continues toward whatever lies north of the house.
OOC:
That's another PC up. CESN, you want Nekurr to go, or should I have Nera take a shot?

Also, I'm auto-upgrading further attacks at this point, since I want to restore the balance in Story Points! :)

Anyone needing urgent healing? I got a Ranged Healing for 3 PCs for PPP
Jan 19, 2021 3:00 pm
OOC:
I don't think anyone's injured but Bruv. Mayor's cronies haven't been able to land a blow, but that's mostly from poor die rolling! You've got two scarecrows bearing down on your group, so you could try to attack one of those again. Or try the mayor, but that carries risk since he's essentially outside now. (See Bruv's attack for modifiers in that case.)
Jan 19, 2021 3:12 pm
OOC:
Bruh can heal himself, I think we need to stop the mayor from escaping most...

Nekurr looks back at Tronus confused... "Figured what is... why is he running?" the cleric instinctively follows the dwarf's commanding voice, trying to "hold the boy down", but not exactly as Tronus would have expected...
OOC:
that "Scarecrow in kitchen: Boost on next attack against it." is tempting but ... the dwarf has spoken!
[ +- ] Roll
Nekurr grabs his cards trying to get some sort of lucky guidance, tripping on one of Hildar's beetles that was just going about its life. In the darkness, some cards fly out in the mayor's general direction, triggering his defensive instincts as he jumps to the side, hitting his head on the door frame... just as Nekurr distractedly checks the slime leaking out of the beetle "Damned bugs are all over the place!"
OOC:
So is that 7 damage with a mayor disoriented on the floor? Advantage for a free B (-_-) on him next?
Can I have a counterspell as the free cat maneuver on top of this?

OOC:
So it looks like you attacked from medium range, meaning Nekurr didn't move toward the mayor first to drop the difficulty to Easy (RR with the SP and Adversary 2). (Not saying this was a bad move; the scarecrow is right there, so that would put you closer to it. Just trying to ascertain what exactly happened.)

I've added 2 more setbacks to represent shooting through a partially closed door. Not enough advantage to trigger Knockdown or Disorient (you need 2 advantage left over to trigger most spell effects, even if you have to increase the difficulty to get access to them in the first place). Nekurr thus hits for 6 damage before soak, and the additional black wiped out the advantage.

Nekurr does have a maneuver he can use, so he can absolutely throw a Counterspell up!
As the door swings back shut, Nekurr sees a shower of debris land on the mayor's head from some sort of overhang in the back of the house. The pile of wood and shingles hit the mayor hard, but he scrambles to his feet and continues moving toward the area behind the decrepit building.

Nera, apparently deciding a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, levels her bow, aims at the scarecrow, and fires. Two more arrows rapidly strike the abomination in its head and torso. The thing hisses and collapses in a pile of straw, wood, and canvas.
OOC:
She'll trigger Linked with the Triumph. 2 hits for 8 damage each. Scarecrow 1 drops!

I'll post for scarecrow 2 in a bit. I posted for Nera out of turn; my mistake.

Rolls

Ranged + Aim + Rapid Archery + setbacks for darkness

Oh, that's right. Yeah, that's fine if you want to say you're at short range to him. Doesn't change this roll, but would potentially impact the next round.
