Chapter 4: Journey to Red Cat Cave

Oct 18, 2022 9:30 am
Througout the night Grandfather Eiwa passes and a discussion is had about what to do with the body. Traditionally you excarnate your dead, but with the Burning Mammoths right on your tail, you are forced to burn his body in a large bonfire. You do so at dawn.

There's a short ceremony where everyone who wants can come and tell a story about Grandfather Eiwa. Wipa comes up and says she's naming her oldest of her two newborn sons Eiwa, and her daughter Sidke after Grandfahter Eiwa's mother. She also accepts the traditional addition to her name signifying birthmother and is known henceforth as Wipakoa.

After the ceremony Argakoa gathers you. "The four leaders have talked, we find the trip to Red Cat Cave risky at best but want to fulfill his final request."
OOC:
You need to decide what route to take the following.
Oct 18, 2022 7:50 pm
"Here," Koram suggests, pointing to the location on the west bank of the lake, "Directly south-east, to start. Once we get to the lake, let us determine our next steps from there, as much may depend on how close and present danger is."
Oct 18, 2022 8:07 pm
Atticus looks at the map with the others and nods his head. I agree, for now that's our best option. We can leave as soon as everyone is ready.
Oct 19, 2022 8:44 am
You start your journey to the south east. The first day goes fine, but scouting ahead of the following the second day you see a river barge making its way downriver. You see what is probably the captain stand and wave at you, taking a trinket out of a crate and pointing to it then waves you closer.
OOC:
One thing we haven't used yet is exploration activites. When in exploration mode you can take activities that you take between encounters. This can be Avoid Notice, Detect Magic, Investigate or Scout. The full list is in the link. Please post your Exploration Activity in OOC under your posts, and then that will be your activity until a new one is posted.

I think he's seen us... at least some of us. Looks like they want to trade. Or maybe it's a trap.
I'll take cover in the bushes and sneak down towards the boat. If he's friendly I'll stay put but if they attack I'll strike swiftly from the shadows.

Igbork ducks down into the bush and sneaks towards the boat in the cover of the bushes and the cliff
OOC:
Exploration activity: Cover up Tracks. Make it harder for those pesky Burning Mammoths to follow us

Rolls

Stealth - (1d20+12)

I'll go down and see what they're about. They may have information about the areas along the river. If they're friendly..that's great we can trade. If they're hostile...then they'll learn today is not the day to mess with us.

Atticus raises his hand and waves back at the man on the boat. Using his spear as a walking stick he starts to move towards the boat and its occupants.
OOC:
My choice of Exploration Activity will be Scout. It'll work well with the Scout archetype.
Oct 19, 2022 10:29 pm
Grom sits upon the bank, his attention wandering between Igbork, Atticus, and the barge boat.
OOC:
Grom will Scout at the opposite end (front of party, or back) to Atticus

Getting closer you see the rivermen are wearing brown and blue cloaks that hide their faces. They row their boat closer to the coast and still keeps pointing to the trinkets. They seem to try and contact you using sign language. Though Atticus can tell something is off. He can see two of them are hiding falchions under their cloaks. In addition he can tell that the mossy rock overhang is slippery, something that would be easier to see from the riverside.
OOC:
You can that the red and blue marked token is wielding falchions under their cloaks.

Atticus stops where he is and motions for the boat to pull closer to shore.
OOC:
Down by the bottom of the map..it looks like a level spot.
Oct 22, 2022 5:32 am
Koram watches as Atticus approaches the boat. He would rather catch these men by surprise if at all possible and attempts to maneuver around unseen in case they decide to attack.

Haitith, however follows shortly behind Atticus, wishing to present a more challenging target should those on the boat decide a fight might be worth their time.
OOC:
Koram Exploration Activity: Avoid Notice (he'll circle around towards the south part of the map
Heitith Exploration Activity: Search (including his perception roll below for approaching the boat, though I think Atticus got about all there is to know there)

The boat gets as close as it can to shore. They try to motion that it's hard to get the boat to go backwards. The man in the back holds up a few more trinkets, then he holds up some coin trying to get you closer.

Oct 24, 2022 8:27 pm
Haitith gets to within 15ft of the boat so that he is clearly visible then releases a roaring 60ft jet of electrical energy into the air, purposely up and over the heads of those in the water. Simultaneously, Koram uses his magic to create the sound of roaring thunder centered around the boat.

Koram steps out around the south end of the boat with his crossbow readied. "Do you speak our words, stranger?" he says in Hallit "Or do you simply mean to goad us into striking distance?"

Koram scrambles and takes a careful step back. He throws his hand up and whispers a few words, sending a spout of black goo from his fingertips onto the area in front of him. Meanwhile, Haitith moves with haste towards the men to the south.
OOC:
What will it take for Haitith to move closer to the enemies to the south? Can he jump down, or is this a climb check situation?

Action 1: Step 5ft back
Actions 2&3: Act Together (Koram Casts Grease, target = square w/ blue enemy, 1 to the left of blue, 1 to the right of blue, 1 to the south of blue)(Haitith strides, 35ft movement to try and position himself in the square to the south-west of the red enemy)
Nov 2, 2022 2:56 pm
OOC:
There's a 10 foot difference, so that amounts to 5 feet fall damage if you jump. Unless you have the Cat Fall Skill Feat you land prone. You can use an Athletics DC 15 check to climb down, but will allow a DC 15 Acrobatics check as well to slide down without taking damage.
Nov 2, 2022 4:10 pm

Would that go for Atticus as well? The only thing he can do is close in for melee combat.
Nov 3, 2022 7:44 am
OOC:
In review, Heitith would better be served climbing, but that is its own action. So for this round, Haitith will instead just move to the cliff edge, saving the climb for next round perhaps.

Igbork's aim is true, and the arrow graces the sailor. Meanwhile the other sailor that when aground goes around the grease and gets around Koram. She lets loose with a heavy strike, but Koram dodges easily.

One of the sailors in the boat throws a bottle at Haitit. Seeing the bottle hit, he is emboldened to draw another bottle from the dwindling supply and throws that one, which crashes into the side of the outcropping.

With all the commotion, Atticus and Haitith can hear screaming from the boat. It seems to come from one of the crates.

As Haitith descends the cliff a Koram sends out an electrical charge. It hits one of the sailors, and jumps to the next who has a lucky slide on the grease and avoids part of the blast.

Then Igbork seemingly appears and with a stab hit the sailor that took the bigger brunt of electricity.

Meanwhile in the boat one of the sailors stands and lets loose with a couple of punches at Atticus. The first blow is easily dodge, and the other he parries aside with his shield. One of the other boatmen sees an opening and steps closer and gives Atticus a punch, but the boat rocks making his attack miss.

Igbork’s first arrow hits the sailor hard in the chest, and he falls back with a shriek. Getting back up he shows he’s still in the fight for now.

He seems to panic however, and pushes off from the shore with his oar. He stands up and tries to push Atticus off the boat. He hits, and the warrior goes tumbling into the cold water.

Meanwhile on shore, the red sailor seems to realize there’s a little more fight in these people than they might have intended. He runs back to the ship, lets loose with an attack on Koram as he passes by and then makes a jump for the ship. He lands prone in the back of the boat.
OOC:

Grom marches toward the bank, his staff held high. At the top of his voice he shouts at the sailors, "be still! By all the gods I command you to surrender and live, it is Sister Cinders will. Defy her, and you will die a very slow and agonishing death. Bring the boat to shore and lay down your weapons"

As he strides past Koram, the druid says in a quiet voice, "there is a mystery to be solved here, we need to keep at least one of them alive until we discover what it is"

Seeing everyone is aboard one of the sailors pushes off hard from shore, hoping the undercurrent will take them away until they are out of range.

The other sailor tries to repeat the attempt to push Atticus overboard, and once again it succeeds. He falls back into the now deeper water. Success in his mind, he steps in the boat and tries to repeat his attempt with Haitith, which turns out to be harder to push overboard.
OOC:
Orange:
Action 1: Pick up oar
Action 2 & 3: Push off from shore

Green:
Action 1: Shove Atticus
Action 2: Step
Action 3: Shove Haitith

Still waiting for an attack from Haitith vs Orange or Blue. Green won't be in the position on the map below when he arrives on the boat, so not within reach.
Atticus can make an Attack of Opportunity at Orange. Or he could save his reaction to try a Reflex save to Grab an Edge as he is pushed over.
There's a possibility that orange will be killed, and in that case the boat won't be that far ashore.

As the surviving sailors sheepishly rows the boat back to shore, Atticus opens the crate to find a bound and gagged halfling woman looking up at her. You see she has been able to get the gag out of her mouth and it hangs around her neck. With the crate open, she stops screaming, fear evident on her eyes.

Easy, I'm here to help. I'll untie you and help you out. Atticus does his best to appear as friendly as possible. Reaching down he pulls out his dagger to cut her bonds.
Nov 22, 2022 7:07 pm
Koram jumps over to the boat, joining Haitith and the others. He keeps his crossbow trained on one of the sailors, for added affect. "How did you end up here?" he asks the halfling.
Nov 23, 2022 7:27 am
"Slavers!" she screams, tears running down her face. The moment her arms are free she points at the two lead sailors. She tries to say more, but it all comes out in big gulps of crying and tears.
Nov 23, 2022 8:36 pm
Atticus puts his dagger away and tries his best to comfort the distraught halfling. However every time he looks at the pirates, Atticus can feel his anger begin to rise up. Looking back at the halfling, Atticus asks a simple question. Did they hurt you?
Nov 23, 2022 10:56 pm
Slavers? Igbork mumbles. If there's anything he hates more than thieves its murderers and slavers.
He draws his short sword and points it at the throat of the nearest sailor.
Did you want to do this to us too? Hah! Answer me you worms! he screams
Nov 23, 2022 11:54 pm
Koram keeps his crossbow trained on the sailor that is not suffering Igbork's immediate wrath. "Best to answer the question," Koram suggests flatly. He glowers at the men, wondering why they should spare them.

He looks then to the Halfling woman. "You there. What do you say their fates should be?"

"No," the woman replies to Atticus between sobs. "They wanted me pristine for sale. Didn't allow the crew to lay a hand on me."

She looks at Igbork and Koram's exchange with the slavers until she is asked for a response by Koram. "They should get what passes for justice out here. Imagine there's not many prisons out here," she manages to utter.
Nov 26, 2022 1:48 am
The druid looks at the poor freed captive with an empathetic gaze and asks, "What is your name child? Where is your home?"
Nov 27, 2022 11:33 am
Igbork pulls Koram and Atticus closer while Grom comforts the young halfling
He whispers to them.
How about we bind them to a tree here so that they'll be found by our pursuers? We will hint to them that we plan to go north which they will tell the Burning Mammoths. Could buy us some time....
Also we should probably search their boat for valuables
Nov 28, 2022 8:17 am
"It is...kinder than I would have suggested - I was going to recommend tying rocks to their feet and throwing them in the water. But your way works better, Igbork. Your wisdom speaks to me. If these slavers could be made to buy us some time, I support it."
Nov 29, 2022 11:19 am
Searching the boat you find 35 gp in various jewels and trinkets. In addition you find a dream pollen snare that's been crafted, but not set.
OOC:
It's a good plan. Though I would need someone to give a Bluff check to trick the slavers.
Nov 29, 2022 6:12 pm
Atticus leans in and whispers with the others. Perhaps tying them up will serve as a two-fold solution for us. First, if we can convince them that we are indeed headed north, then that could buy us some much needed time. Second, the hirde will undoubtedly torture and kill them. Which will handle the pirates getting some much needed justice.
Nov 30, 2022 12:33 am
Koram nods in assent. "I'll give it a go," he says.

Now louder, "That's it then! We'll take care of these fool slavers then head north, along the lake." He makes sure the sailors can hear him, then approaches the men. "You lucked out - you won't die by our hand, at least. Come now. We'll leave you here while we continue along our way." He pulls a dagger on the nearest man and holds it to his throat. "Are there more of you up north? Any other dangers we should be aware of?"

Nov 30, 2022 9:50 am
"Nah! We ain't got no one else," one of the thugs says, seemingly glad to have a small chance at survival. "Though we did hear word of a kelpie along the river somewhere." They seem to believe Koram.

Meanwhile away from the slavers, the halfling introduces herself as Harbinna Farwinder. She's a cartographer and explorer who has decided to map out the area. A few months ago, she stumbled on a tattered map of the Gornok Plain that belonged to a spiritualist from northern Avistan. The spiritualist wrote notes on the map as he explored the region, traveling eastward just like you are. His map includes a description of the Gornok Plain, the Gornok River, and a little sketch of Rockloom. To the east, he drew an icon of a cat-shaped cave mouth and one word—"tiger?"—though apparently he never made it that far; his notes stop suddenly at a spot labeled Gleaming Sun Lake.
Nov 30, 2022 8:17 pm
Igbork goes up to Koram gives him a pat on the back and looks at him with a sly smile. Koram really did a good job in fooling the slavers.
Then he approaches the boat, pulls it on shore as far as he can and then lights it on fire.
The boat is too small for all of us and I don't want those dirty slavers to manage to wriggle out of their bindings and continue their deeds.

Then he looks at the map of Harbinna Farwinder.
Seems like we have the same target. Maybe you want to join us along the way. You may know a bit about the land that we don't and you are protected by our numbers alone he mentions to her
OOC:
Hope I'm not overreaching by burning the boat but I don't see any use for it...

Also do we create a collective vault with the valuables or are we just splitting them?
Nov 30, 2022 8:24 pm
OOC:
If we compare maps, can we update ours by looking at hers?
Dec 1, 2022 6:37 pm
OOC:
I'm good with burning the boat, no worries from me.

As far as treasure goes, I feel those of the following are more communal by nature. Maybe we would take small trinkets for ourselves as trophies, but overall 'treasure/wealth' I vote we make as a communal pool.

Things we find of particular usefulness we can just make sure go to the person who might make the best use of it, for the good of the Following. Thoughts?
"A kelpie, huh? Good to know." Koram says, tightening the rope binding them to the tree, "Thanks."

He heads back to the others and discusses next steps with them out of earshot of the slavers. "I agree, Harbinna, unless you have somewhere you can get to safely, you should accompany us. Though, truth be told, it may even be safe doing that. We are being followed." He explains the slight ordeal with their pursuers.

Looking over the maps, he nods and agrees, "Yes, okay. This is good information, our maps alone do not provide clear detail as to where we venture. We may need to be careful around this tiger cave," he says, pointing, "if we come close to it."

Atticus suggests they bring the details of the spiritualist's map into their own and he nods, "Harbinna, if you agree to come with us, it may be a wonderful opportunity for you to continue your cartography work, as we venture into unknown territory. What do you say? Do you think you could map things out while we travel and explore? In exchange, we will offer the protection our group can afford."
Dec 2, 2022 9:03 am
"I would like that," Harbinna says with a smile. Going through her maps, you don't find much more information. The tiger cave seems to fit the location you have of red cat cave and the place his notes stop, Gleaming Lake is where you are headed.

The next day passes with no other incident than a light drizzle and by the day after the sky has cleared up again. There's still a cold spring wind as you stop at the river to fill your waterskins. Though a strange sight meets you as it does. Dead fish bob along the surface of the water, and the river emits a nauseous odor.

Atticus stops just before dipping his waterskin in the water. Keep your skins away from the river! Something is going on upstream.

Grom releases his wild shape and marches towards the surrounded Hatith. As he strides topwards the combat, the druid lifts his staff in the air and utters strange incantations. The staff begins to throb with primal energy and leafy vines begin to emerge from the shaft. As Grom reaches the assailant (red) he makes ready to bring the shillelagh down upon the creature with all his force.
OOC:
(GM, I'm thinking release wild shape is one action, and movement a second. Shilleagh is two actions so I'll have to hold that in reserve until the next round

The purple hunter steps so he flanks Atticus and lets loose with two quick jabs of his spear. The first of which hits.

The last hunter, seeing you have the upper hands runs over to the cage and tosses it off the travois so the cage shudders. It still holds, but it has weakened enough for the creature inside to force its way out.

The red hunter curses as Grom appears beside him, and he instinctively attacks the new arrival. Though, maybe seeing the creature freed is affecting him as both attacks miss. He then runs away from the newly freed creature.

Atticus’ sword cuts into the lead hunter. He groans in pain, and tries to return the favor. He draws a spear, opening himself up to another attack from Atticus.

With his spear drawn, he lets loose with a devastating attack that hits Atticus hard in the side. Then he jumps off the travois and heads towards the bushes, leaving Atticus alone with the angered creature.

The creature lashes out at whatever the closest creature is, and attacks Atticus. His armor is just barely enough to keep back its’ wild attacks.

The red hunter lets loose with one attack versus Grom before running the opposite direction.
OOC:
OOC: Atticus can make an Attack of Opportunity as the yellow hunter draws a spear.

Grom, you seem to not have added your second level to AC, so that’s not a crit. And you're correct that AoO works differently. It's now a feat that only Fighters get at level 1. Though many classes gets access to it around level 6.

Critical Success The target falls and lands prone and takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage.

Success The target falls and lands prone.

Critical Failure You lose your balance and fall and land prone.

You get back to camp by the time the sun is setting. You report to Wipa about your finds. "This is worriesome, we should have enough water to go without refilling for a few days," she tells you. Harbinna Farwander
You spend another day traveling, finally a day without any trouble and you get your following closer to your destination.

When you return for the evening you are approached by Harbinna Farwander, the halfling you saved a few days ago.

"I was wondering if I could have a moment of your time?" she asks, and before you have time to answer, she continues talking. "We are getting close to the lake. As you may recall I was following an old map I had found. It belonged to an old spiritualist from northern Avistan, and at the lake his notes suddenly stop. I believe he ran afoul of the kelpie my kidnappers mentioned. And while it could be dangerous, I would like to come with you when you get to the lake. I want to figure out for myself what happened to the explorer."
Jan 30, 2023 8:56 pm
Igbork slowly nods.
I don't see any reason to not take you with us. Just be careful. I think Kelpies are dangerous..
Igbork scratches his chin and thinks about whether he's ever heard about Kelpies before

"You are more than welcome to join us, so long as you understand the potential danger."

"Haitith," Koram calls, "keep an eye on Harbinna if we find ourselves in danger. Do what you can to keep her safe."

"I will do so - of my own free will, mind you, not because you commanded it of me! My instinct to protect the weakest of the group would have me stay at your side, Koram, but I like Harbinna. She smells like home."

Koram squints. "What does that even mean?"

"Never mind, you wouldn't understand," Haitith says with a shake of his head.
Jan 31, 2023 12:06 pm
OOC:
Here's what Igbork can remember about Kelpies: Kelpies are malevolent amphibious fey shapechangers intent on luring mortals to their doom. These cruel predators lurk in and around areas of water, slightly preferring freshwater over saltwater. Kelpies lure or drag their prey underwater then drown and devour them, leaving behind only the victim's heart and liver— the only parts of a meal kelpies find unpleasant. Kelpies are fond of magically disguising itself as fine steeds or attractive strangers to draw in victims, but its true appearance takes the form of a hideous equine with slimy, green flesh resembling aquatic plants.

Some fanciful stories about kelpies speak of them appearing in equine form wearing riding tack, complete with silver stirrups and bridle bit. These folktales claim that cutting the harness from the kelpie's body grants the bearer power over it, or causes the kelpie to sicken and die.

You also remember that they as fey creatures are vulnerable to cold iron.

Jan 31, 2023 11:43 pm
Yeah now I remember! My mom told me stories about them. They live in the water and look green and slimey but they are tricky beasts. They can disguise themself as a magnificent steed or attractive gal or guy. And they like people... as food that is. They devour whole humans but they leave the heart and liver. So if we find rests of their meal we know that one is nearby. So we better be careful Igbork tells the group

The next day you set of early, hoping you will be able to get to Gleaming Sun Lake and just after noon you can see it in the distance. A couple of hours later you've made your way down to it and while looking for a place to set up camp you hear a noise and from the lake you can hear cries for help. About 30 feet from shore you can see a man who looks to be from Kellid descent fighting with something under the water. The water seems to reach him up to the breast. "Come! Help! Quickly!"

Habrinna moves trance-like towards the creature, but in the water she too comes to her senses.

Atticus closes the distance, strikes once before raising his shield. It’s obvious the creature is more used to moving about in the water as it easily dodges his blow.

The kelpie bites first at Atticus then at Haitith. The first strike is a mighty one, and if it hadn’t been for his shield, it would have been a mightier hit. The eidolon is able to avoid another bite though.

It wil take several days to go further, so do you want to take the most direct route to the caves or will you go via the forest or veer north first?
Mar 1, 2023 9:06 pm
Igbork studies the map of the region.
I think it would be best for us if we just headed straight to the Red Cat Cave.
Everything else would give our pursuers time to catch up. What do you all think?
Mar 2, 2023 9:57 am
"We have nothing to gain by going off the direct path, at least as far as I can see. Getting the Following to safety is the only priority - I agree with Igbork."
Mar 2, 2023 1:30 pm
The next few days passes without incidents and you are making good time. Eventually you leave the last of the river behind you and start heading closer to the mountains.

One day you come upon what looks like a lifelike statue of a rearing mammoth stands in the middle of a grassy flatland.

https://i.imgur.com/unOHzYA.png
Mar 4, 2023 8:53 am
"This is incredible," Koram says, approaching the statue, "The stonework is impressive." He places a hand on the stone, feeling the material.
OOC:
Nature roll below - anything seem off about the rock? are there other rocks of this type nearby? is this carved of one solid piece of stone? how old does it seem?

Rolls

Nature (Wis) - (1d20+4)

Mar 4, 2023 2:27 pm
As you get cloer, you realize that beneath one of the stone mammoth’s feet are the crushed remains of a feathered animal. You cannot identify the creature. Though you are able to recognize that this was once a living mammoth that has since been petrified by magic.
Mar 4, 2023 3:08 pm
Igbork tilts his head to the side
Do you think this animal petrified the mammoth?
Igbork gets closer to get a better look at the crushed animal and determine what kind of creature this is

Rolls

What kind of animal is that? (Nature) - (1d20+4)

Mar 4, 2023 3:16 pm
"Hmmph", Grom grunts as he runs his hands over the petrified Mammoth. "What's afoot, eh?". Grom places both hands on the stony beast and his eyes close.
OOC:
GM, I'd like to cast DETECT MAGIC
Mar 4, 2023 9:02 pm
There's no magical auras beyond latent magic from the petrification. Igbork recognizes the creature as a cockatrice.
Mar 6, 2023 9:39 am
Koram chuckles at Grom's joke. "If this animal did this, we should be careful. It's likely there could be more about."
Mar 7, 2023 1:40 pm
OOC:
Anyone can give me a survial check to look for signs of other creatures.
Mar 7, 2023 1:41 pm
Ah cockatrice... I thought they were purely legendary Igbork murmurs
Good call Igbork responds to Koram's note. He goes to the cockatrice, inspects its feet and looks for any tracks that resemble it.

Rolls

Looking for cockatrice tracks (Nature) - (1d20+8)

(19) + 8 = 27

Mar 9, 2023 7:42 am
You do not find any evidence of another creature, but through skill you are able to track it to its lair. You find the remains of a long dead body, and among its equipment among broken and rusted weapons you find a small silver collar. It is not magical, but you appraise to be worth 25 gold pieces.
Mar 12, 2023 12:40 am
"Well, this trinket is well enough, but we should be moving. There doesn't appear to be anything for us here and we have miles to go yet."
Mar 12, 2023 9:08 pm
Agreed... Let's keep moving Igbork grunts.
Mar 14, 2023 8:36 am
Another few days pass, and you become more and more confident that the majority of the Burning Mammoths are far behind you. The days become boring repetition as nothing exciting is happening. Eventually you arrive at the Grandparents.

This wide, windswept valley marks the beginning of the Tusk Mountains and the point at which the Broken Tusks typically turn north for the summer. The expanse is several miles wide, but rolling hills and mountains rising high to the northwest and southeast make the area feel smaller than it is. The way the peaks loom over the plain gives an impression of enormous, stooped figures, hence their name: the Grandparents.

The following has always stopped in the valley between the Grandparents to engage in quiet rituals honoring departed ancestors. Even with the Burning Mammoths in pursuit; no one wants to skip taking some time to observe this tradition, especially now with Grandfather Eiwa among those to be remembered.
OOC:
As you scout for a proper place to camp, could you all give me a Survival or Perception check.
Mar 14, 2023 9:00 pm
Igbork climbs one of the smaller elevations in the area, shields his eyes against the low standing sun and looks out for a place that's both suitable for camping and relatively hidden in order to not show the Burning Mammoths where you are...

Rolls

Looking for a place to set up camp (Perception) - (1d20+8)

(7) + 8 = 15

Mar 15, 2023 1:32 pm
The place looks like a suitable place. And for the first time in a long while you seem to have time to relax. The following is talking about taking at least a couple of night's rest. But how many you take will be up to you. It will be an opportunity to craft some equipment or you could reconnoiter the hex to see if there's anything else.
Mar 16, 2023 7:53 pm
Koram feel antsy waiting around. He'll take some time checking with the others in the Following and spending time with those closest to him. If the opportunity presents itself, he would go with others to scout ahead and do some reconnaissance of the area.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+4)

(11) + 4 = 15

Mar 16, 2023 7:59 pm
Igbork joins Koram in his scouting efforts. He wants to make sure that everything is as peaceful as it seems....

Rolls

Reconnoiter with Koram (Perception) - (1d20+8)

(11) + 8 = 19

Mar 17, 2023 10:14 am
Igbork is able to find some fresh tracks, suggesting you're not alone in the area. There's at least four set of foot prints.
Mar 17, 2023 5:24 pm
"Let's get the others, Igbork, and see where these lead," Koram suggests, "We don't want any surprises out here."
Mar 20, 2023 12:12 pm
You follow the tracks to a small steep trail that goes up the mountainside. The trail is partly hidden by shrub bushses.
Mar 20, 2023 7:46 pm
Igbork bows down upon arriving at the concealed trail
Grmpf... Seems like whoever lives here doesn't like being visited. But we should have a look nevertheless. If only to warn them that real trouble is coming...
Igbork ducks down and sneaks up the trail...

You hear several voices talking to each other, too low for you to make out, until a female voice calls out in a strange language. None of you can understand the words.
Mar 21, 2023 6:05 pm
Igbork decides to slowly raise his head and have a look at the origin of the voices
Mar 22, 2023 1:16 pm
You see a tall woman surrounded by what looks like three porters. They have set up a small camp on a plateau with view of the whole valley.

You hear one of the porters starts speaking in a foreign language. The lady replies in the same unfamiliar language. She holds up her hands, showing no weapon.

One of the porters say something to the woman and she replies. Then the porter steps forward. "The lady Prendergant greets you," he says in broken Hallit. "We don't want to cause any trouble and expects none back."

Ardissa Prendergant
The two porter and the Lady Prendergant confers for a moment and she seems to delight at the mention of trade (or at least something). The porter turns his attention back to you. "The Lady would want to buy a Mammoth if you could capture one," he says. "She believes this would suffice as payment."

Lady Prendergant rummages through a satchel and then withdraws some mundane trinkets—a lace handkerchief, a half-full bottle of ink, a handful of copper coins—and displays them in her open palm.
Mar 29, 2023 8:32 pm
Igbork scratches his head and looks mildly bewildered.
Well in fact we found one just a day's march south of here. The only problem is that it has been turned to stone. If you could undo that it would be all yours.
Neither Igbork personally nor the tribe as a whole seem to need those things but Igbork thinks that selling a petrified mammoth for whatever price is still better than nothing

Ardissa and her porter confers again and she shakes her head. Her voice becoming heated and she sounds (and looks) angry. The porter turns back to you. "I'm afraid the Lady insists on a live mammoth."
Apr 2, 2023 7:27 pm
Igbork makes a deep bow. I understand. If we happen to catch a live mammoth we will rush right to you and deliver it
He looks at Koram and Grom Do you have any more questions?
Apr 3, 2023 7:45 am
Koram steps forth and shakes his head. "No. I think we'd be best on our way. Not much farther now."
Apr 3, 2023 7:57 am
The lady is incensed that you won't sell her any mammoth. As Koram steps out of the bushes, the lady shrieks and draws her rapier. She screams something, though you do not understand the language. The porters seems to get ready for something.

From his new vantage point as he steps forward, Koram can see a cage with some kind of animal in it deeper in the camp and wolf statue next to it. The animal looks like the one you saw under the petrified mammoth's feet a few days ago.

As Haitih knocks the last porter to the ground, you can hear Ardissa yelling something in her strange language before dismissing the cloud of mist. She holds her hands up and she motions for the porters to lay down their weapon as well. A few more words escape her mouth, and while you cannot understand her, the meaning is clear from her anger and the porters' reaction.

"Lady Pendergast wants to apologize for our behavior," one of them says through gritted teeth, obviously embarassed to get a talking to by Ardissa.

As long as you do not show any hostility, the group lets you go in peace. And eventually you find yourself back down the mountain. On the way back to the following you hear someone calling out for help.

Going closer to explore what's going on, you see a halfling suspended in the air, caught in a net hanging from a tree.

And Igbork, you would roll Religion which you have a +8 modifier for. So you would get a 21. Enough to recognize the symbol as Pulura, the mistress of the stars and the aurora. Pulura is an angel empyreal lord, the patron of those travellers that become homesick, lost, or injured in the snowy wastes of the far north.

"Good, good," Koram says, "I'm Koram by the way." He gestures to the electric, blue dragon nearby. "That's Haitith. What's your name? Where you from? We're sort of in the middle of nowhere here."
Apr 22, 2023 8:27 pm
"My name is Artesia. I was part of a trade caravan heading to Tian Xia across the Crown of the World. During a blinding blizzard, I became separated from my company and I've been wandering ever since. I figured to head south, for warmer climes, and I guess I found my way here."
Apr 24, 2023 7:52 am
You are able to cut down Artesia without any trouble and soon she's standing safely back on solid earth. "I suggest you don't walk around alone," Atticus says. "There's worse things out here than snares and traps."
Apr 24, 2023 8:25 am
"He's right," Koram says, holding his hand out to help the freshly-released halfling up from the ground. "Though it sounds like you have scant options for companionship out this way. You're welcome to stick with us for as long as you'd like. I can't promise you great comfort - we live a simple life out here, and have found ourselves in trouble too as of late. It could be dangerous even, but you wouldn't be alone."
Apr 24, 2023 9:04 pm
Seems like Pulura lead us to you. Just be ready for potential trouble. A tribe is following us because of old grievances. We're trying to make things right but until we manage to do this we may have to fight them...
Apr 25, 2023 2:32 am
"Thank you for the offer. I think I will stay with you for a while, at least. You're right that it could be dangerous out here!" Artisia smiles at her rescuers.
Apr 25, 2023 1:08 pm
In the middle of the conversation, Fenris starts barking like mad and moments later an arrow flies through the air, hitting Atticus straight in the knee. The big warrior goes down immediately and you see two tiny doglike creatures have come climbing over a ledge. Even stranger, they are followed by a slightly larger creature. The hunchbacked creature moves with surprising speed for something with it’s strange appearance and avoids part of the breath weapon.

Red moves towards the west and fires two arrows at Haitih and both of them hit.

Then green moves north, and fires another two arrows at Haitih. This time however the first one goes far and lands in the ground between the eidolon and its summoner. The second arrow hits it mark, though barely and it is only a scratch.

The strange hunchbacked creature moves forward with confidence and it says some arcane words and motions with his arms. Moments later a greasy substance appear beneath Haitih.
OOC:
The feature in the middle is a pit, so quite possible to see through though not to move through without jumping.

The second attack should be 5 lower, but still a hit at 20.

Haitith needs to make a Reflex save DC 18 or fall prone (as must everyone trying to pass through the area marked with red.)

Everyone can act.

Artesia pulls out a sling and sends a stone flying towards one of the creatures. It misses, though only by mere inches from its head.

Igbork fires off a flurry of arrows and one of them hits the hunchbacked creature.

Haitith moves out of the green goo and goes into combat with the hunchbacked creature and it is able to dodge all his attacks.

Red lets loose with a couple of arrows at Haitith to defend his leader, but only manages one weak gracing hit. Then he maneuvers to be right in front of the pit.

Green falls back and fires two arrows at Fenris. One arrow graces the wolf.

The hunchback’s hands crackle with electricity as it reaches out to touch Haitith. It gets its hands on the dragon and electricity shoots out of the creatures hands and into Haitith. The feedback and connection to Koram causes the summoner great harm. The creature laughs as it scurries back away from the dragon.
OOC:
Artesia: In Pathfinder 2e every round you have 3 actions to do your stuff. Assuming you use one to take out your sling and one to move closer so red is in range. If you want to change this let me know and we can retcon.

Grom: Your animal companion only gets one action at the end of your turn though. You need to use the Command an Animal action to give it more than one action.

Fenris runs at green and gives it a mighty bite, causing the creature to call out in pain.

Igbork lets loose with another flurry of arrows, but none of them hit. Though one flies frightfully close to the creature.

Then Artesia moves forward and tries to give the small creature two big whacks with her staff, but it is too small and agile for her strikes.

Haitih does a tactical retreat and lets loose with its breath, causing a small bit of harm on the hunchbacked creature.

Then the red creature moves back and fires two arrows at Artesia. The first one hits the cleric in the shoulder.

Then green uses a similar tactic and fires at Fenris. Again one arrow hits its mark causing Fenris to yelp in pain.

The hunchbacked creature walks up to Fenris and lets loose with a bite and a claw strike. Both strikes hit, the bite being particularly effective and brings the wolf down to unconsciousness.

OOC:
Koram, sorry about that. Missed that you also moved. You can do your next action based on being next to Haitith.

Artesia, you add your Wisdom mod of +4, and because you are trained in your spell attacks you add +4 (your level +2) for a total of +8. When it comes to Heightened spells, you heighten it when you gain access to higher spell level (that means level 3, 5, 7, etc.). It would be 1d4+4 for now, and you only add dice and not your spellcasting ability modifier (look at Heal that specify that you also add your mod). But since it was a natural 20 you do roll 2d4 and add 8 for a total of 12.

Igbork can recall that all the creatures encountered were Gremlins. The escaping creatures were Pugwampis. They enjoy preparing pranks involving spikes, excrement, pits full of spiders, and the like. Pugwampis are somewhat deaf and thus often yell loudly to each other when not hiding. Many pugwampis worship gnolls as gods and aspire to be more like gnolls, although gnolls hate pugwampis even more than most creatures do, due to their sycophantic fawning. They also takes great pleasure in the unfortune of others.

While the hunchbacked creature was a Nuglub. Nuglubs enjoy killing with a glee that other gremlins reserve for sabotage. Indeed, they spend long hours preparing ambushes for unwary travelers or plotting the murders of sleeping villagers. Though less technically inclined than their kin, nuglubs do enjoy building traps. They delight in stealthily constructing traps in places their victims consider familiar, such as front doors and the floors around beds. If someone else gets blamed for the mayhem the nuglub creates, all the better. They are vicious fighters and can do great harm to prone enemies. Nuglubs rarely gather in groups larger than half a dozen, as quarrels often lead to violence and cannibalism. A lone nuglub who bullies a group of smaller gremlins is more likely to get their way, and thus less likely to attack their allies.

Letsua

The creatures seems to stay away with their leader dead. And you have ample time to heal yourselves back up. You are able to return to the camp where a bonfire and warm stew awaits you.

Artesia, you find several of the children of the camp coming up to you and pestering you with questions about who you are and what you're doing here.

"Another stray?" Letsua says with a smile when he notices. He turns to Artesia and motions for the children to leave you alone. "You are welcome to take of our food and lodgings as long as you need. I am Letsua... the elder of the tribe." This last statement is made with great sadness.

"Thank you," Artesia replies. "In return, I offer my services and the blessings of Pulura."
