Chapter 1: The One Who Watches From Below

The east passage widens into a well-traveled intersection. Small footprints lead in all directions. The muted thumping sounds emanate from the ceiling. To the north, stairs lead up to a door, while the tunnel continues on further east.

Clusters of mushrooms sprout from floor to ceiling. A glassy, yellow eye opens from the center of a mushroom cap, staring you down. Then, one by one, an eye opens up on every mushroom in the chamber! They glare at you...

"I've got a bad feeling about this..."

Hyde briskly moves towards the stairs since the thumping seems to come from above, he moves his torch to his shield hand and draws his sword...

Kip positions herself next to Honey and draws her weapon. Kip also raises her mirror shield to face the mushroom eye.

The door at the top of the stairs opens into a strange area filled with an almost alien architecture: all corners are rounded, the walls are coated in whitewash, and strange glowing crystals are mounted on every surface. The ceilings are low, causing all of you to stoop over except for Kip.

This room is bustling with activity. A hooded figure with its back to you is whacking away at a butcher’s block with a meat cleaver--the source of the thumping noise. The figure is a full head taller than its brethren, who are the size of halflings. A line of similarly-garbed workers carries pots brimming with purplish severed limbs and black organs. Another group feeds the chunks of meat into a bubbling vat connected to pipes that feed into the floor.

The humanoids shriek in alarm when they notice you. As they turn to you, you can see that beneath their robes, their bodies are stunted, with swollen, stiff joints and a pale purple pallor. Their oversized heads are twisted and deformed. Yellow teeth, too large for their mouths, jut at awkward angles. Their eyes are black like an eel’s eye, and vestigial gills line their necks.

Everybody but Aldar may act! There are eight regular enemies and their boss with the cleaver.

The chaos cleric also utters the arcane verbiage that invoked her deity’s blessing.
OOC:
Oops. Disapproval! Results: The cleric must increase their god’s power by recruiting a new follower. If they do not convert one new follower to their deity’s worship by the next sunrise, they takes a -1 penalty to all checks on the following day. This penalty resets after 24 hours.

"Ulesh, Bringer of Peace, grant me your protection from these foul creatures!" Brother Tim recites the words to call forth the protection from evil.
OOC:
20-23: In relation to evil effects, evil creatures, and anything else unholy to the clerics faith, the cleric and all allies within a 10 radius receive a +1 bonus to saving throws against evil creatures, enemy attack rolls against them suffer a -1 penalty, and damage suffered from evil sources is reduced by 1 point per die (minimum damage 1 point per die).

Hyde rushes the cleaver creature and lunges in a feint designed to get the butcher to raise its weapon that it might be lopped off...

While Honey's magic falters, Tim's proves strong as he creates a protective aura around himself. Kip readies her weapons as Hyde rushes forward, cutting down the cleaver-wielding mutant before it can attack!

Four of remaining mutants shriek in terror and flee the room. The other four split into groups of two as they rush Hyde and Kip with daggers drawn. Kip lashes out with axe and shield but doesn't hit. Luckily, none of the mutants are able to hit either!

Brother Tim dashes towards the nearest creature that is attacking Hyde or Kip, brandishing his club. He shouts, "In the name of Peace!" as he launches his attack.

Feeling shook by the lack of response from her deity, Honey is shook. This has never happened before. What had she done wrong? The thoughts were violently loud and insisted on her attention such that she was frozen in her tracks. She barely snapped out of it before realizing that they were still facing a gruesome enemy.
She loaded and fired a bolt from her crossbow at one of the beasts directly in front of Kip.

In desperation, Honey would turn to luck for success. Would 1pt do it?

Aldar intones the The Arrows of Althazar once more, hoping for more success than his previous spellcasting attempts. Yet hope quickly turns to despair as he once again fails to channel the magic correctly. In the back of his mind, a small voice encourages him to make a blood sacrifice next time. Every time even. Aldar has heard this voice before, but tried not to listen to it. Today, however, perhaps it speaks wisdom.

Aldar tries to cast Magic Missile and fails. Next time, a little spellburn may be in order...

Kip missed...everything. Gruesome images of Selene and Roy's deaths flash in her mind's eye. I won't let that happen again! she bellows. Kip performs the same trip attack and shield bash combo.

@Darkstar8, you'd need 2 points of Luck to hit (AC 11). Not sure if it's really worth it to burn so much on just an attack roll when these guys aren't really that threatening.
Unfortunately, none of you are able to land a hit against the enemies this round! The halfling-things attack again, this time managing to stab both Hyde and Kip.

Aldar takes a small knife and makes a quick cut on the left side of his forehead. Blood flows from the wound, spreading through his bushy eyebrow, wit a small amount finally flowing into his left eye. As it hits his eye, Aldar wispers a word in a forgotten language. A moment later, the magic of The Arrows reappears in his mind. He shouts more than chants the magic words to release the spell.

This time, the magic flows. More than that, something metaphysical breaks, and a torrent of energy flows through Aldar. Where he had hoped to send a few small arrows at their enemies, Aldar finds he is barely able to shape the rush of magic into a single, powerful missile. With a flick of his fingers, Aldar sends the missile streaking towards the thing with the cleaver.
OOC:
Aldar spellburns a point of Str to regain the Magic Missile spell, then tries once more to cast it.

Critical! Adding his level to the check, that's a 24. "The Caster throws a single powerful missile dealing 4d12 + CL damage."

27 points of damage!
As the missile strikes home, the hair on Aldar's face and head grows an inch longer in an instant.

The tide turns in your favor. Kip chops down one of the halflings, then Honey slays one with a crossbow bolt. Aldar’s magic missile strikes a third halfling, causing it to literally explode! Blood and body parts fly everywhere, showering Hyde and the final halfling.

The last foe shrieks in terror and turns to flee!
OOC:
Hyde may take a free attack as it runs away. Either way, combat is over!
