Prologue - Death House

Aug 12, 2024 7:55 am
The woods are quiet this night, and the air grows chill. For whatever reason—you can't remember how—you've become lost, unhooked from the world you once knew. Or maybe you do remember. Maybe you are cursing your foolishness—maybe someone else's. The sky doesn't look good, dark clouds looming high above you like giant birds of prey. The sun gutters dimly like a dying flame, pale and warmless. Lightning flashes through the trees, lighting clawlike branches, and you know you must find shelter soon.

You are mulling over your strange and dismal fate when the giant, black trees part to reveal a road the color of old blood. Black pools of water stand like dark mirrors in and around the muddy roadway. As you squelch down the road, the sky breaks with rain. It comes down in trickles, then drops, then furious sheets that drive mist high into the air. Soon enough, you are soaked to the bone and have lost all sense of direction.

It is then that you see the House. Its peaked roofs loom out of the mist like the bones of a giant, and the tattered pennants at its peak whip like mad in the growing storm. Warm yellow lights pierce the mist at the entrance of the house as if to beckon you. Before you know it, the mist clears and you find yourself on the lawn of the House. A narrow, gray building of peeling plaster and fieldstone, its three floors of dark windows glare down at you like apathetic eyes. The warm lights come from oil lamps hanging inside an entrance portico at one corner of the house, which is shut with a rust iron gate.

Looking around, you see that the mist is still thick behind you; in fact, it seems to form a wall around the perimeter of the lawn and the House. You also see that other weary figures have found their way here as well. Hopefully, this place offers you a more hospitable welcome than the land around it.

That mist! Vapors that should hold no substance seemed to be steeped with a malevolence that certainly felt like it could reach out and touch you if the shivers going up her spine were any indication. Unsettled as she was, Drina knew it would be a long tense night waiting for those first rays of daybreak before she would find rest. Tugging at a fringed blanket, Drina covered the toes peaking out from the bunk from the sprawled form that had earlier assured her that he was not tired and would share his company during the wait for morn. But heavy eyes had been Vai's undoing with him succumbing not long into the night. Thus Drina moved silently around the limited space in the Vardo she called home as not to wake the sleeping boy until the obscured view from the mist called her to make a parameter check.

A parameter check. Something so simple. A chore so ingrained that the ranger didn't realize that her sharp senses caught details that others might miss like the silence of the woods. Perhaps at this elevation frogs no longer croaked out their mating calls but to hear no buzz of insects? No. Unnatural. But then Drina circled through the vegetation behind the wagon with fronds slapping at her leather boots before reaching.....no....that didn't make sense...the road....she should be at the road. Drina never was lost! Born with an internal compass, the ranger had a sense of place and yet....somehow her senses were off. It had to be that damned mist!

Desperation started to rise within as Drina acutely felt the separation from her brother. No, too many times amateurs in the wilderness were found dead because of giving way to panic so she forced herself to breathe through her nose releasing the air from her lungs back out her mouth. Now the vardo had to be somewhere to the west so she would count her steps making a grid until she found her way back. A smile of relief touched her face when moss gave way to rock. The road! But triumph was short lived as this path did not resemble the one previously traveled on her arrival. Where was she?

As if the situation couldn't deteriorate more, the skies decided to open up pelting her with a chilling rain that caused dark wet strands to cling to the planes of her face. Becoming quickly drenched, Drina turned to her right while picking up her pace as she traveled the curves of the road. A light ahead gave out hope for all the darkness that had seemed to surround her. At least it was a fixed point from which to find her way back. Perhaps someone might be able to point her in a direction. But even as the thought ran through the rangers mind, Drina noticed how the mist itself seemed to close in as if standing guard. Had the mist corralled her to a prison or was the house a source of sanctuary keeping the fog at bay? Either way Drina decided to follow the light and meet her fate.

The last thing Amalthea remembers is having drank more than she should have of the moonshine she had brewed. She had given up drinking after leaving the mountains. Dwarves drink to remember and she didn't want to remember anything until last night. It was her father's birthday and she owed him that much. She must have miscalculated how strong she had made the drink or perhaps her tolerance had gone down over these past few months.

A short young woman in chainmail and a weathered green cloak walks up to the gates. Despite the hood, her auburn hair is dripping wet. Though dwarven women often grow out their beards, she has shaved hers to try and look less conspicuous in the outside world. It doesn't help that she has a tattoo on her cheek marking her as dishonored and exiled from her clan. She takes out and looks at the amulet around her neck. It has a mountain shaped like her childhood home and a valuable red gem faceted in the middle. She considers saying a prayer for a moment, but she shakes her head and tucks it away instead.

She looks back at the mist she has left behind, thick and impenetrable. As she turns toward the front again, she sees other wayward souls. She is a bit hesitant to speak out, painful memories of camaraderie still haunting her, but she instead stands as tall as she can and relies on her paladin and soldier training. She turns to the one nearest her.

"Ay, a bit wet out. Do you know if this is an inn?"

The rituals had worked. Somehow? Did they? Surely it was not what Avalyn had expected would happen, but something had happened. She stepped through the mists, quite amazed, slightly scared. Was this truely the first step to something greater?

She steps oit of the mist, into the lawn of the house, looking around amazed.

Those already there would see a young woman in fancy green and white clothes. Blonde, a bit frecklish, not very tall for a human. She seems slightly disappointed to see the two other women here. Are they rivals in her discovery? Or could they be allies?

"Greetings," she just said, in a cautious, neutral tone of voice.

It irked him falling for such an obvious trap, with the walk in the rain and mist doing nothing to brighten his mood. He had thought himself only a mile or so outside the township but the sheeting rain disoriented him, and seeping damp was starting to chill him to the bone. So the building was a welcomed sight as he knew he needed shelter more than anything.

Approaching those standing near the entrance he pulled himself deeper into the large hood of his dark traveler’s coat, hiding within it’s black shadows. He notes their appearance searching for weaknesses if the situation was to turn south, which it did on many occasions once his identity was revealed. He would stay to himself for now and listen moving gracefully to occupy a corner of the shelter, letting his eyes search the building for anyway, asides the door, to enter.

"Obviously not an Inn." a reluctant voice says from with the hood, in a way which sounded as a surprise to themselves.

The rain seemed normal enough. The mists, not so much. They usually didn't get mist near the temple, and certainly not mists that almost seemed to move with you, tracking you, closing in on you...

Abraham wasn't completely surprised to be somewhere wholly new and unknown to him when he found his way through those mists. Dismayed, certainly... but not surprised. He assumed the house looming before him was something supernatural or mystical, due to the mists, but it also was respite from the driving rain.

As he approached, he realized others were gathered there as well. "Well met, travelers. I do not know where we are, but perhaps we can take advantage of the building before us and move out of this rain?"

Besides... if this is where the Gods, or at least the Fates, want us then walking away isn't an option. May as well face it head-on.

With that, Abraham strides directly to the door, checking the handle and entering if it is open.

Anyone paying attention to the character hiding under it’s cloak would notice the hood shaking slightly side to side, as the new arrival stride’s boldly out of the rain and pulls on the door.

Being a Gypsy meant that crowds of people didn't always favor your kind. Sure, individually ladies like the uppity looking blonde would slip into camp interested in having her fortune being read about finding her truest love or sometimes asking for a concoction of some sort to drive every man insane with desire or perhaps even hexing a rivial but then draw their skirts back and whisper to their friends as they passed you on the street that you were probably a thief. The men? Well, thief wasn't the derogatory word used when roaming eyes and hands took liberties before being pointingly dissuaded. But trouble came without borrowing it so best to keep wary but offer a smile and greeting to the rain drenched forms that had also emerged from the mist.

Holding a hand pressed to her forehead, Drina tried to keep the worst of the rain from dripping into her eyes. Greetings. Miserable night, huh? I did not see any signage as I approached so I don't believe the house is a public inn. So then, is anyone here the owner of the home or even a local that I might get directions? The ranger had thought best to brave the fog to return to her brother as quickly as possible so if she could gather the needed information, she would be on her way even though a cup of tea and warm fire would be welcomed. Comfort was the least of her concerns.

Drina gaped in horror at the sheer audacity of the man in armor as he strode to the door and without so much as a knock, tried to gain entry. If such a move was made by a Traveler then it would be the gallows for sure but apparently if you have fancy armor then certain allowances were extended to you. But now what to do? If she ran then being a Gypsy, she would appear guilty. Perhaps better to follow to explain her innocence but who would accept her word? This night just went from bad to worse!
Aug 14, 2024 12:50 am
Amalthea is about to fall in line behind the man taking charge before she stops herself. This isn't the army anymore. She instead steps back to take a look at the others and their situation.

Taking a better look, this house is indeed not an inn, nice as that would be. Perhaps the occupants are sleeping as no other lights than the ones in front of them seem to be on. She clocks the fancy woman's slight look of disappointment when she looks at them, the confident and almost foolhardy man who appears to have seen more than his years let on, and the hooded man attempting to hide in the folds of his cloak all whilst sharp eyes dart across it all. Finally, she turns to the other young woman who is staring in disbelief and notices her poorly trying to keep the rain out of her eyes. She tugs the blanket out of her pack and holds it out to her.

"Here lass, this will do you better for the rain."

As the Dwarf’s eyes scan over him Taniwha pulls the hood across slightly with wrapped hands, in hopes to shadow his appearance more. He pauses to examine those around him and listen to the conversation. The Dwarf maiden looks strong and disciplined, probably ex or current military. The dark haired female appeared as weary of others as he was, but beneath her piercing green eyes and gentle movements was a warrior. Both of these seemed unsure of their surroundings.

Whereas the other two seemed to be where they should be, either through blind faith or design. Out of the two the well dressed female held the most interest, she appeared the lest dirty and wet. Her calmness held a calculated weight to it, giving a strength and deadliness to her. Whereas the males sheer presence and blind faith made him deadly.

He remained silent in his corner watching his surroundings, his hand holding his spear of dark wood and steel in a relaxed grip.

Taniwha notes that balcony on the third floor that takes the place of the left-most window. With a monk's careful eye, he also picks up on some tinier details that most others would miss.

Meanwhile, Abraham approaches the portico. The wrought-iron gate is rusty and hangs open on one hinge. As it opens, the hinge shrieks like a screaming child. The roof over his head relieves Abraham of the torrential rain. On the wall to his right is a rotting bench with three legs, and the bright oil lamps flank moldy oak doors in front of him.

Before Abraham can reach the doorknob, a black shape lumbers up from behind the bench. The pale face of a little girl pokes out of a huge black cloak, which she has wrapped around herself to ward off the evening chill. Behind her, an equally pale toddler peeks out from the children's hiding place.

"Are you a knight?" the little girl asks. She looks around eight, and her eyes are brimming with tears. "Please help my mother and father. There's a monster in our basement!"
Aug 14, 2024 12:57 pm
"Well then, that settles it," Abraham says more to himself than anyone. "Little one, I will do my best to help your parents. We have to make sure you will be safe though! Where can you go?"

This must be why the mists took me. My God wishes this child and family protected.

Turning to the other people loitering in the yard, he addresses them: "This child speaks of family threatened by a monster in the basement. Will any of you assist me in helping these people?"

Kindness by a stranger? This night was delivering all sorts of surprises. Finely arched brows had raised at the unexpected thoughtful gesture as a warmth entered those emerald green eyes spurring her to offer information of a more personal variety spoken in an exotic lilt that spoke of distant lands. "Thank you. Tis much appreciated. I am known as Drina. Kon del tut o nai shai dela tut wi o vast which means she who willingly gives one finger will also give you the whole hand." Reaching out the ranger laid hold of the offered blanket before burying her face in the folds to soak up the rain.

Lowering the cloth from those bright green eyes, Drina tracked the one in armor as he advanced upon the house. Cringing at the shriek produced as metal grated on metal as the man strong armed his way past the first barrier. A warning found its way to her lips as quickly as her hand found the hilt of her sword as Drina caught the motion of a shadow darting toward the knight. "WATCH ...." Seeing a young girl in the folds of a dark cloak silence the remainder of the warning.

This child had to be around the same age as Vai but had a vulnerability that her brother lacked. Vai would be armed with a dagger charging down the stairs to confront all that went bump in the night but he had had to grow up fast. Remaining innocent was a luxury Drina hoped these young ones could continue to indulge...that was if these two were indeed innocents and not illusions setting a trap.

Dregs! When had that carefree Gypsy girl become so jaded? No matter. Drina would give instruction whether the pair were true or false and with the interaction hopefully be able to tell.

Stepping under the protective cover, Drina bent to take a knee while offering a reassuring smile. "Sorry. I didn't mean to startle you. You have been very brave taking care of your brother but I need you to continue just a bit longer as we help your parents. You were hiding so good that I didn't even see you. I need you to hide again until we return. If it becomes light before we come back then take your brother and run down the road toward your neighbors. But remember, not until light. Motioning the toddler into her lap, Drina wrapped the blanket that had been gifted her around the pudgy body before planting a kiss on top of his head. Fishing into her pouch, the ranger found a red stone that she pressed into the girl's hand as the ranger whispered fiercely, "Now take my lucky stone and squeeze it if you find yourself afraid as it holds magic to help you stay brave. I shall return for it when I come with your mother and father."

The ranger helped the children return to their hiding spots. "You can count on me to help but can we be sure sure the threat only lurks in the basement? Should we clear the rest of the house to insure we aren't surrounded?"

Abraham smiles warmly. "We know nothing. There may be no monster at all, and this could be a trap to snare passers-by set by a cult. But, on the belief the gods would not provide me with more than I can handle, I intend to assume these little ones speak the truth until I'm shown otherwise. I do think we should be intelligent in our approach though. Bravery and stupidity need not be the same."

His eyes scan the yard, through the rain, surveying the other wanderers gathered before opening the door.

Hidden within his hood Taniwha watches the interactions between the green eyed girl, Drina she said her name was, the Knight and the Children. Making note of how at easy she was with children and kind, as much as the Knight was stiff and awkward.

As the Knight lay a passive aggressive request down Taniwha gave an audible groan as he stood upright to his full five foot ten inches, shaking the rain from his hood. "Better than standing in the wet, I suppose. But may I suggest one of the window, to take those inside by surprise."

He raises a hand to point at one of the downstairs windows, revealing a pale red clawed finger in doing so. "The windows open outward, which makes it easier to pry open."

Avalyn overlooks the situation quietly for a moment. A lot of strangers, a child asking about help against a monster in the basement.
She frownns. This was not what she had expected. But no matter, maybe there was some confusion. Or a test. She nodded at the knight asking for support.
This was an opportunity to forge alliances.
"Very well, sir. I'll accompany you. My name, all, is Avalyn Valenwood. It looks like we are in this together for now."
Aug 15, 2024 3:28 pm
Amalthea smiles as her face scrunches in puzzlement at Drina's proverb, but she quite understands it once she sees her using the blanket to wrap the young boy in it.

Ah well, it's probably time to get a new one anyway. I can't begrudge its use.

As Avalyn introduces herself, Amalthea turns to the group as well.

"Well met to all. We certainly cannot see these children in distress and do nothing. I am Amalthea and ready to follow your lead. What window should we try?"

At Drina's comforting words, the girl brightens and shows a shy, innocent smile. "Father says I'm brave for protecting Thorn from the monster—that's my brother. My name is Rose. Father says I'm small for my age, but I'm already ten! We tried to run away from the house, but the mist made us sick and sleepy and we had to come back. I can hide with my brother under the bench. He's scared of everything, but I help him be brave."

Thorn is indeed afraid of Drina, but he warms up to her gentle touch. Drina can feel how ice-cold his poor little body is, even though his heavy cloak. He clutches a shapeless stuffed doll closer to his chest. Rose regards the stone with wonder and gives it a tight squeeze. "I'll never let go of it. You can trust me!"

Rose shoots Abraham a hurt look when he suggests that the children may be a trap or illusion. "We're not a trap! We're real! Me, Thorn, and our baby brother Walter. He got born last week, and it was really stormy and scary. Mother took him into the basement and Vasha ran away from our home. That's the name of our nursemaid. I miss her. I hope she's okay." Rose starts to cry again but quickly squeezes the lucky stone. Thorn toddles over and hugs his sister. "Please hurry," she begs.
Aug 16, 2024 8:19 am
Abraham opens the rotting doors of the house. As soon as he is past the threshold, they slam shut behind him. Rose and Thorn jump, and Thorn begins to cry.

He falls silent for a moment and watches as the Knight enters the front door. "Maybe better staying together . . ." the door slams shut, ". . . Oh shit!"

Sweeping past the group and children, Taniwha starts examing the door looking to open it.

Drina's emerald eyes blinked in response to the sudden reverberating slam of the door. Sure wind could cause a draft but it seemed closer to the house swallowing the knight than some natural phenomenon. A glance at the mist surrounding the house confirmed that her assumption wasn't entirely based on an overactive imagination. "Shhh, children. 'Tis only the wind. Keep hidden.

The ranger felt the presence of the cloaked one as he rushed past to the door. Laying a hand on his shoulder, Drina hoped to draw Taniwha away from the door without alarming Rose and Thorn more, I think your original plan to secure another entry a prudent one. Do you have any particular skill or shall we simply pry open the window with a crowbar?"
Aug 16, 2024 7:45 pm
"Owww" Avalyn yelps as the door slams shut. "That might be just the wind. But yeah, this is spooky."

She reaches with her hand for the door to open it. A door that just slammed shut, might not be locked.
But then she notices Taniwha's careful examination of the door. And smiles approvingly and waits.
Aug 16, 2024 8:34 pm
Amalthea gasps as the man is engulfed in the darkness of the house and the door shuts behind him. She sees the cloaked man and Avalyn rush forward to the door while Drina comforts the children. Out of instinct, she moves to the ground floor window that was pointed out, closest to the front door, and attempts to open it and find their companion.

Taniwha instinctively drops his shoulder as the hand is laid upon it turning his head slightly, his manner calming as he who it is. "I have." he says quietly turning back to the door, "You showed kindness, a rare trait." he adds in a quieter voice as though to himself.

Taniwha can clearly see that the door hangs loosely on its hinges, as full of mold and rot as it is. That means there should be nothing holding the door shut so tight, yet it doesn't budge. Even whatever lock might have once held the door has long since rusted away, yet the door holds as fast as if it were banded with steel.

Amalthea moves to the nearest window and tries to pry it open. At first it doesn't budge, but on her second try it swings wide open. A blast of warm air rushes into the chilly air, and inside she can see a roaring fireplace. The room inside looks like a hunter's den, with a stag's antlers mounted above the fire. Two padded chairs draped with animal furs face the fire. Overall, the place looks comfy and inviting.

"So we're going in?" Less of a question really and more of a statement of intent as the ranger followed the other members of the party to the window that had been forced open. Informing those who seemed to be her companions at least for the short term, "I'm pretty nimble so I think I can make it but especially if I get a bit of help. Ummm...I'm not sure I caught your name, but with two of us at the window we should be able to lift the other two women inside, don't you think? And just my opinion but with the mention of monsters, I think it best if we stick together."

The rock that Amalthea tossed into the room is visible where it has rolled under the side table between the chairs. Indeed, nothing stirred in the house when it was thrown. The windows are indeed filthy, but Avalyn's magic cleans them easily. Both first floor windows look into the den room, which means that Abraham must be deeper in the house.

After Avalyn observes everything she can, Amalthea boosts Taniwha into the room. Behind them, Drina gracefully springs over the windowsill and into the den. The adventurers feel the comforting warmth of the fireplace, banishing the chill from their bones. A moment later, that warmth gives way to panic.

Three snarling wolves, yellow eyes gleaming, circle the party. Or only seem to, since they're actually clever taxidermies with saliva painted on to their tongues and snouts. At this point, a door in the eastern wall swings open and there stands Abraham.

Now that the party is inside the den, they can see the rest of it. There is only one exit, a polished mahogany door in the east wall. (Abraham just used it.) There are also two cabinets against the walls (somewhat flanking the door) and a table with four chairs in the western corner of the room. On the table before the fireplace is a cask of wine, some goblets, a pipe rack, and a candelabrum. Mounted above the fireplace is not just a stag's antlers, but its whole head. The dead eyes gleam lifelessly down at the party.

Finally, hanging above the party's heads is a chandelier of wrought iron. It is lit and flickers as cheerfully as the fireplace roars.
OOC:
Now that the party is reunited, I can post the revealed parts of this dungeon in the Maps thread. Instead of making you guys map (as I would in a 1e or 2e game), I will continually reveal parts of the player map as they are explored.

"Good to see you lad, what is the layout of the place?"

"Ah, here you all are," Abraham says with a smile. "About what you'd expect. Beautiful home, fancy foyer, quality craftsmanship, multiple floors. Nice, solid doors too." As he says that he raps his gauntleted knuckles on the door he was standing at.

"Taxidermy fans, I see." Abraham will move to inspect the wolves to satiate his curiosity.

Just the fact that they're circling the room as if hungry and waiting to strike. One would expect a taxidermy in a sitting room to be a little more pleasant.

Dimensions of the window being what they were, Drina was able to lift her feet over the sill as she landed into the room instead of having to utilize a more undignified wiggle before tumbling into the floor. Looking competent inspired confidence which would lead to less hesitancy which the ranger had found a successful strategy. Turning back a hand would be offered to any outside until the party was assembled in the room. A quick intake of breath accompanied the appearance of the knight. "Fate has been kind! I had my doubts that we would be so quickly reunited. It had almost seemed as if the house itself was working to separate us. So you have noted nothing unusual?"
Aug 20, 2024 6:30 pm
"Mm, I mean I've only been inside a few moments longer than the rest of you. I saw the foyer and hall, then met you all in here. Neither the foyer or hall seemed odd, possibly outside of being completely empty," Abraham replies as he kneels to inspect one of the wolves. "This is my first proper room. It seems the owner had a bit of personality though, eh? Taxidermy stalking the room!" With that, he laughs as he stands and faces the group.
Aug 20, 2024 7:24 pm
Amalthea looks suspiciously at the taxidermied wolves. She edges around them to be close to the door out.

"Personality's a nice way of putting it. I'm ready to get those kids in somewhere warm. Should we work our way down from the top or go to the basement straight away?"

Rubbing his chin, Abraham glanced around. "I am... wary of the basement. Well... this entire situation truthfully but the basement in particular. Do you remember what the child said?"

He pauses for emphasis before continuing.

"They needed help because of a monster in the basement, yes? But Rose also said her mother took their baby brother into that same basement. It doesn't add up."

"Nothing has made much sense from the moment that mist came rolling in. No one here knows this about me but if I have been somewhere once then it's like I have an internal map of the area. Whether inside or out, cloudy or clear, I know what direction I am headed in relationship to other features around me. I had inspected that campsite yet, I became lost while circling the wagon thus ending up here," green eyes burned fiercely.

Tilting her head to the side as if weighing options, "Now nothing is completely wrong but it's not right either. Is the home in disrepair or not? Why would the door not open? Look at the fire, the flame fills the fireplace without a bunch of ash but the children were chilled so exactly how long had they been out there? And that is another curiosity, this should be a family dwelling but there is no mending in a basket by the fire, no sign of children's books or toys and so what the young ones reported being confusing seems normal for this night. I would put to you that based upon such observations that if we were told to go down then we should go up.

I would suggest starting at the top of the stairs keeping at least two of us by the banister so we can't be surprised as the others search the floor until every room is clear. If I'm wrong then I know that it is a tremendous waste of time that this family might not have but I'm uneasy. Uneasy in my soul if you know what I mean. If we have a consensus then I think we should not dawdle."

Mathfuric says:
Taniwha shakes off the rain from his cloak but keeps himself well within the shadows of his hood. As the others talk he moves over to the cabinet on the southern wall and searches it.
There is no cabinet on the southern wall. Refer to the map here. Taniwha will find that the north cabinet is almost empty save for a box of playing cards and a rack of wine glasses. The east cabinet is shut with a heavy padlock.
Aug 21, 2024 5:50 am
OOC:
Whoops, got my east and west mixed lol. Do you allow lock picking without Thieve’s Tools?
Taniwha picks up the playing cards from the northern cabinet, flipping them over in his hand a few times to examine them before putting them into his pocket. He turns moving towards the other cabinet, "Uneasy describes it well, Drina." He says in a quiet voice as the walks over the other cabinet and squaring down before it. He reaches out wrapped hands carefully holding the padlock so he can examine it closely, figuring out if he can open it without smashing the cabinet. "Should have grabbed a set of tools, stupid." he mutters under his breath.

No, you need thieves' tools to pick a lock, but can still try to brute force it.
Aug 22, 2024 11:37 am
OOC:
Rookie mistake, should have purchased some of those.
Shaking his head in disappointment at himself for not grabbing a set in his rush to leave his past behind, Taniwha pulls one of his daggers out. Disappointment building more as he has to resort to brute force, rather then finesse, he jams the blade in between the lock and cabinet door, takes a firm grip upon the handle and with a sudden jerk he yanks down.

Not every accusation made was true. Travelers were easy patsies as they were perpetual strangers but, on the other hand, if one had such an abundance that they acted careless and a few items went missing then where did the fault truly lie? However, the man in the cloak was bold as their companions were unknown. That blonde, Avalon, looked like someone that could put up a fuss and not a small one.

Without looking like it was her destination, Drina slowly passed by the one that seemed to prefer shadows, in a lowered voice she counseled, "There are eyes. Who knows who watches? You might have better luck with the fireplace stoker."

And with that the ranger approached the steps that lead upward gripping a hand on the banister. "I'm going upstairs unless someone has another plan."
Aug 23, 2024 6:08 pm
Amalthea is a bit shocked as the cloaked man tries to break open the lock on the cabinet.

"Oy, is there really something so important that you need in there? It's still someone's house, right?"

Then she sees Drina drift past and start her way up the stairs. She shakes her head. Should they already start getting separated yet? She looks back at the others.

"I can break open that cabinet before we go if you really need me to, but let's try and stay together."

She points her warhammer in Drina's direction, indicating she is ready to go when the others are.
Aug 24, 2024 9:57 am
Taniwha’s shoulders shake a just a little as if one was holding a laugh as Drina moves past and whispers. A couple of seconds later he slips away his dagger and shrugs. Wrapped hands pull the hood forward as the lean figure smoothly stands, shaking his hood at Amalthea’s offer and pausing for a brief moment as if about to say something . . .

Without a word he follows Drina up the stairs.
Aug 26, 2024 3:05 pm
The stairs were like the keys to a piano. No matter how lightly the green eyed woman stepped each new rung seemed to creak out a new note. Convient for naughty children out of bed listening for the warning sounds announcing their parents approach so they could dive under covers to pretend sleep had been the only activity the children had been involved but less so for Drina. Well let whoever was above if any know she was coming! She wasn't alone!

The second floor, Drina assumed were the family sleeping chambers. Standing on the landing, Drina's eyes scanned the part of the floor visible looking for the next set of stairs to continue upward to the third floor that would likely hold the staff or possibly a ballroom. The ranger nodded back in confidence to those who had followed as she raised a finger pointing upward indicating their continued climb

When he gets to the door to leave the study, Abraham watches as the others head up the staircase and asks, "Are you sure about heading up? Shouldn't we at least check the basement first since the mother reportedly took the baby down there with a monster?" Regardless, he will move to stay with the others after glancing back to check that nothing was amiss in the study.
OOC:
If nothing happens in the study -- in particulsr checking the window that was propped open, the cabinet that one had attempted to break into, and the peculiar taxidermy -- Abe will follow the group upwards.

Taniwha pauses at the threshold of the door exiting the study, there he stands still for the briefest before turning to the window. "Did you see the Blonde human Knight? Did she come in the window?" Noticing the windows are still clean he walks light over to the open one and leans out. "Are you coming . . . Avalyn? Tower stay outside." He looks for the obviously educated one ready to help her up.

Taniwha will help Avalyn inside before heading off to join the others.

OOC:
@Shorty, assuming Avalyn is staying with the party. With help, it's easy for her to climb through the window.
With nothing else interesting in the den, the party moves through the main hall of the house. This is a wide hall with a black marble fireplace at one end and a red marble staircase at the other. A carving of nymphs and satyrs playing among the trees wraps around the walls of this massive room following the stairs upward.

Drina notices that each step creaks as she walks; perhaps the wood under the marble paneling has seen better days. The party continues up past the second floor, spying a hall as elegant as the one below it. This hall is lit only by the dim light from the floor below, although there are unlit oil lamps and another marble fireplace. Most prominent in here are four suits of armor, two along the east wall and two along the west.

As the party continues further up the stairs, a cold draft meets them, along with a feeling of foreboding. The light gets weaker and weaker the higher you go. Following the banister, you come to a balcony overlooking the massive staircase. A faint circle of light thirty feet down reveals the first floor and tells you which way is down. It is too dark to see anything up here, but the stench of mold is pungent.

Even from the shadows of his hood Taniwha walks with confidence in the shadows and dark, moving to be beside Drina. Drawing next to her he places a gentle yet firm hand upon her shoulder get her attention, he raises his other hand flat open palm facing her indicating for her to stop. "You may want some light." He says simply as he turns to examine the walls, "This place is off."

Taniwha makes his way down the halls carefully running his fingers over the pictures, and examining his surroundings for any dangers or traps. "Look closely at the forest, see the corpses and worms? This is not a family home."

Amalthea wrinkles her nose up in what seems like disgust, but then she sneezes rather loudly.

"Ope, excuse me. He's right though, this floor is full of cobwebs and mold. What parent would let their children and babies be living with this? Do any of you have something to make a light?"

While she asks this, she moves to the nearest door and gingerly attempts to open it.
Aug 30, 2024 9:39 pm
Woefully unprepared, the ranger had realized the light was definitely becoming an issue. The moon and the stars were usually enough for the one nimble on her feet but no ambient light streamed through any opening and the downstairs light kept its radiance at bay. Trying to breathe steady as a rising sense of panic curled up from the pit of her stomach.

The green eyed woman almost loosed a scream as a force gripped her shoulder. Jumping back, Drina leaned against the wall slumping in relief as she make out her companion with the hood. It was only her companion! Relief washed over the ranger until she realized the wall had actually been touched which only increased the intensity of the mold smell. "Sorry" Drina offered as Amalthea sneezed.

Taniwha notices no traps in the hall. He traces the seam in the west wall at right angles until he realizes that he's looking at a secret door. At the same time, Amalthea moves to the nearest door, but a rough, ice-cold hand clamps on her shoulder! The suit of armor, one gauntlet on Amalthea, stares blankly with its empty wolf's-head helmet. Armour Sentry’s are common place among many houses, so after the initial self blame for missing something so obvious Taniwha subtly changes his weight displacement. His right hand slides along the shaft of his spear finding the balance required to bring it down upon the arm of Amalthea‘s assailant, in an attempt to break its grip.

Using the momentum of the strike Taniwha shifts forward driving the flat of his foot into the knee joint, attempting to place his full weight upon the weak point of the connection.

Taniwha's spear crushes down on the armor's right in the crook of its arm. The arm clanks back down to the thing's side. As he tries to plant his foot, the armor thrusts its knee and parries the attack. Abraham rushes to the armor's side (C3), swinging his blade wildly in the dark. The armor raises its arm, the blade ringing off harmlessly. A spray of sparks illuminates the snarling wolf helm, then everything is black again.

Amalthea swings her warhammer, but the hall is too crowded to swing properly. The head only scuffs the armor, spitting more sparks.

The armor flings both hands out at Amalthea, its cold hands squeezing around her neck. At the same time, it tries to shove her off the balcony and down the stairwell.

This was ridiculous! Drina had expected sleeping chambers with draped canopies over the bed meant to shroud the occupants from daylight incursion. And yes, an area for the children to learn their letters and such while being littered with a few toys. The worst that would happen was one of those with her to maybe step on a block letting out a stream of curse words. The monster was suppose to be in the basement!

But there were definitely things that go bump in the night and from the ruckus, it was thumping hard. Shins screamed in pain as a solid object collided into the ranger. Drina out of a reflexive action almost added to the forward momentum the object had to tumble down the stairs until realization occurred that it wasn't a what but a who. More specifically the one who had shared her blanket but unconscious.

Not having an abundance of strength, the green eyed ranger often had to work around her deficit by being fast. Dropping on top of Amalthea, Drina wrapped her body around the other woman's to form a protective cocoon keeping especially her head from receiving further trauma as the ranger guided their descent down the stairs.

As his spear strikes hard against the armoured assailant Taniwha is thankful once again for his dark vision, but thankfulness fades to misbelief as gauntlet hands tosses Amalthea aside like a doll. His free hand pulls away the cloak wrapping his appearance for this was no time for restraint, nor petty gestures to hide one’s true identity.

Planting his right foot weight balance allows him to thrust his spear at the armoured ghast, hoping to distract it away from the fallen Dwarf. Sliding his weight onto his front left foot the young Tiefling drives his right knee into the hip joint, hoping to disengage a part of the armour.

Amalthea is indeed knocked unconscious. The armor tosses her aside like rags, but Drina flings out an arm and saves her from toppling over the railing.
OOC:
That's right, Amalthea can't fight back. She is still knocked unconscious and will have to start making death saves, but Drina just saved her from a drop that likely would have been fatal.
Taniwha, in full hellish glory, thrusts his spear right into the monster's cuirass, staggering the thing and heavily denting the armor. Sparks fly, and flickering shadows seem to contort the wolf face into a rictus of pain. Though the blow would have killed a normal man, the monster only limps upright.

It flings its useless crushed arm, slapping Taniwha's next attack away. Heavily damaged as it is, its strength is still beyond mortal.

Abraham is up next, then Amalthea must roll a death save or be stabilized.

A light....a light would reveal all instead of this unnatural darkness! Or maybe it only would reveal the face of her demise but Drina would prefer to see it coming.

Growling, Drina flung herself at a reckless pace down the stairs while yelling toward any that still stood, "I'm going for light!" If the ranger was going to throw away her life then it would come at a high cost which she couldn't extract in the dark.

Taking a monkey grip on the armoured forearm and bringing his feet up against the chest, he pushes up and against the thumb braking the grip. The momentum allows the agile warrior to flip back onto his feet into an attack stance . . .

A solid banister had guided the ranger on the headlong rush down the stairs from the upper story. By the time Drina's boots touched the second floor landing, green eyes were once again able to make out details of her surroundings.

However, the second floor was not the destination. Drina only knew of one definite source of flame which was crackling in the study's fireplace so onward she traveled. Fleet of foot, the ranger's steps barely made contact on the stairs before leaping across the last few steps entirely to land on the highly glossed surface. Using the momentum from the landing, the gypsy used the force to propel her forward into the study.
OOC:

Unless Drina uses a bonus action, we are back up to Taniwha. It's the same distance to either the main hall fireplace or the study fireplace, and both are lit, so I put Drina at the former.

The speed and power still left in the animated armour had taken Taniwha by surprise, He lowered his profile circling the guardian using the time to get oxygen back into his lungs. A clawed hand slides towards the head of his spear adjusting the balance.

With a smooth motion the young monk twists at the trunk, causing the spear the arc high towards the foe’s upper torso. Using the momentum he then plants his right foot and turning on the spot, bringing the left foot down in a hammer kick . . .

Round Four

Taniwha steels his grip and throws himself in a whirlwind of claw and metal. The spear slips off the breastplate of the knight, but the kick. . . .
OOC:
Taniwha, feel free to describe the killing blow in as much detail as you like.
Afterwards, the armor clatters to pieces, never to move again. Taniwha feels cold fingers caress his cheek as its animating spirit leaves this world forevermore. In his ear, a small voice whispers, "Thank you."
OOC:
The wolf knight is down, but we are still in initiative until Amalthea and Abraham aren't dying anymore. Both of them must make death saves now, then Drina is up.

For future reference, the stairs are difficult terrain and you have to clear all three fights to get to the third floor from the first. Drina was able to get to the ground floor in less time by somersaulting some of the way.

As Taniwha brings the spear head down he smiles quietly as his opponent opens up to his secondary attack.

The heel strikes cleanly onto the crown of the helm with the force of a sledgehammer, compressing it into the body of the suit. A loud crack breaks the eerie silence followed by a popping sound, as the helm splits then catapults into the air. Two halves of the helm hit the floor spinning like a top . . .

EDIT: I say stairs are difficult terrain in combat for realism. On anything but flat ground, one still has to be careful not to trip or loose their footing. That could be a deadly mistake in battle. Now that I think about it, the stairs can become normal terrain again since the real fighting is over.

The party had failed to properly explore the entire first floor so the room in which the ranger entered was unfamiliar but Drina had been drawn by the pops and crackles of the fire burning in the hearth. Now was not the time to indulge in curiosity as her companions needed her aid but even so the ranger took a cursory look around the room looking for any item that might staunch a wound as well as gathering an oil lamp.

Holding the vessel to the light, Drina confirmed the well was filled with liquid before removing the chimney to light the wick with a piece of kindling. As the fire fed upon the oil, the lamp was quickly reassembled becoming a source of illumination.

With the lamp in hand along with any other items that could be quickly grabbed, the green eyed woman started the return trip. Her own breathing was loud in her ears. Drina tried not to think about the fact she did not know what was awaiting for her at the top of the stairs but the gypsy could not turn away from those who had fallen being committed to the same path as she. I WILL return to you Vai! vowed the devoted sister even though her steps lead upward toward danger instead of the open window so tantalizing close.

Without realising it Taniwha had raised his hand placing his finger tips to the spot touched by the spirit. His breath had started to calm but his eyes still wide at what had just happened, his fingers holding the spot as though searching to hold onto something or someone.

Footsteps on the stairs bring him back to the present and the wounded. He quickly scans the fallen. The Dwarf is coming around gaining consciousness, but the Human is still out. "Drina, is you? Hurry I need some help." he calls out hoping the green eyed lady had not abandoned them.

He moves over the knight making assessments of his condition, loosing armour and checking airways. Going over the DRSABC taught to him throughout his youth, again hoping that is Drina coming up the stairs. He did not have it in him to face another enemy.

Amalthea looks around blearily, her head and neck hurting more than she has ever felt in her life. However, with her darkvision, she can see Drina is gone and that Taniwha is above Abraham's prone body. The armor that had attacked them is now in pieces strewn across the third floor.

"By Dumathoin's hammer, what happened?"

Amalthea unsteadily rises and her first instinct is to put one hand on Abraham's head and the other hand on her pendant and heal him.
OOC:
So Amalthea can only give up to 5 hit points to someone? I guess she will give 1 hit point to Abraham to wake him up in case we need it again for someone else?

An extra burst of speed fueled Drina's steps as she bounded up the final flight of stairs responding to the call of help. Light flooded the top landing illuminating...well illuminating a much better scene than the one played out in the ranger's head. Everyone was whole. Well perhaps not whole as the knight looked as if he could slump over at any moment with large beads of sweat clinging to his hairline. Amalthea seemed unsteady herself but could the race that was as wide as they were tall, tip over? But most importantly, no one was dead!

"By the dreg of the tea leaves, I never saw that coming! It was so dark! What even happened?"
Sep 16, 2024 6:47 am
With the illumination of Drina's oil lamp, the whole party can now see where they are. The third floor hall is more like the rotting corpse of one, the walls crumbling away and succumbing to vicious mold. Cobwebs choke every corner. There is a door in the northern wall, beside the jumbled remains of the armor. Another door is perpendicular to it in the west wall. To the east is a short hall with a set of double doors and a single door facing each other.

The rotting walls are carved with an alpine forest, but Taniwha pointed out that there are tiny corpses hanging from the trees and worms burrowing out of the ground. There is also a seam in the west wall beside the door, which Taniwha found out was a secret door. (Before he could share what he learned, the armor attacked.)
Sep 16, 2024 1:50 pm
"That was unpleasant," Abraham mentions as he sits up, looking around before rummaging in his pack. "Not my first choice, because I rather hate not having both sword and shield in hand but considering how that almost turned out... perhaps it would be prudent. I am unsure who roused me, but you have my thanks."

As he speaks, Abe pulls out a torch and his tinderbox, striking the flint until a spark ignites the torch. Putting the box back in his pack and securing the pack he shoulders it again before standing, passing the torch between hands as he does so. Once standing, he retrieves his sword and sheathes it, holding the light in his dominant hand as he picks up his shield.

"Well then... everyone ready?"
OOC:
AC is the same, but if a fight breaks out Abe will have to drop the torch to draw his sword.

He will also see if any sconces can be lit as they walk.
Sep 16, 2024 2:29 pm
"Woah, buddy! I appreciate your willingness to power forward but you look like you could use a breather. The green eyed woman's eyes fell on how the very bones of the upper floor seemed to be rotting around them as her nose crinkled in disgust. Well, perhaps not the most restful of locations but..."

The ranger trailed off noting the pieces of metal scattered on the ground before giving the breastplate a slight push with her toe. "Was this what attacked us? So some kind of magical knight? I doubt it is "the monster" in which the children spoke. It does concern me that this isn't the only suit of armor. At least two more are on the floor below so we should proceed with caution. Do we have any idea what triggered it?"

Riddled with an unhealthy amount of curiosity, the ranger tried to look through any open doorways as she spoke.
Sep 16, 2024 11:01 pm
Relived that Amalthea stepped in to help Abraham, Taniwha takes the moment to retrieve his cloak and slip it back on but not the hood. Turning his head towards Drina as she arrives back on the second floor holding a light source, brief half smile touching his lips before quickly assuming a sullen look. "Welcome back. Best to rest in a room." he says before turning to check and listen at the door in the west wall, next to the secret one.

She follows over to look at the armor on the ground.

"I guess I must have stepped too close to it and it activated its sentry duties. In my training, we were taught that it is powered by magic so if we find anything that can dispel magic in the area, it should give us time to beat it to a pulp."

"I'm afraid that my skills don't extend to the arcane. I do dabble with the supernatural as I have skills in reading tea leaves but magic is a different kind of mystery." Shrugging with a wry smile on her face,"And before anyone here makes any comments on if I am a diviner then how didn't I see this coming? The answer is simple: you don't see what you don't look for."

Drina then tapped her lips as a look of concern washed over her face, "I'm afraid that we may have lost the one of us that knew about such spells. I traveled all the way back down the stairs without seeing Avalyn at all. Hopefully, the woman slipped out the window safely and is halfway down the road. By the way, I don't think everyone gave their names when we first met. I'm Drina." Green eyes laid heavily on the one who seemed to carry more than his fair share of angst.
Sep 18, 2024 2:32 am
If he could have Taniwha would have buried his head into the door in front of him to escape the stare from those green eyes. With his feet shuffling and trying to appear still listening at the door, he quietly says, "I am Taniwha."
Sep 18, 2024 2:58 am
The party is enveloped by silence in the derelict hall, but with great focus Taniwha can hear the softest sobbing from beyond the door.

Amalthea investigates the armor. Beaten and dented as it is, she can't tell if there ever was any writing at all.

P.S. Abraham finds many oil lamps around the walls to light, but there are no open doorways for Drina to look through. She can always listen at a door.
Sep 18, 2024 10:18 am
With a brief introduction Taniwha puts up a hand indicating for there to be silence, and he leans closer to the door. Not quite sure he heard it the first time, he concentrates on the noise behind the door. "I think there is someone, or something, crying behind this door."

He steps back a little from the door. After the last attack he is not sure how to proceed, is this a trap or someone in genuine need. He had seen many crocodile tears that lured many a victim in. He turns looking to the others . . .
Sep 18, 2024 11:16 am
"I think we have passed the point of niceties but it is good to know the names of those I stand by."

"Well, with all the commotion made out here, there is no way our presence can not be known. That means whoever lies behind the door chose not to attack." Perhaps it was caring for one younger than herself but the ranger had a habit of stating the positive while leaving more disturbing truths unsaid like when the dinner pot had the last of the game with no promise to be refilled the next day but Drina only spoke of how satisfying the current meal was. A similar situation here. Yes, no one had attacked but neither had assistance been offered.

The green eyed one drew closer to the door indicated while motioning those who had been injured back. Grimacing for having to do so, Drina drew her sword. Knuckles then rapped on the door. Just the definitive sound of wood echoing under her hand had a calming effect on the ranger. In the possibilities of a myriad of actions, Drina found those moments unsettling but let the path be decided and then all that was left was consequences and she would deal with those. "Hello. No need to fear. The armor is no longer a threat. I'm coming in."
Sep 18, 2024 11:46 am
Drina had a calming way about which could be liked to the Monks he had grown up with, this made a familiarity with the green eyed human. He did make not that none had commented on his appearance, which in his experience was a rare thing. He pushes back the thoughts as the Ranger knock and announced herself, and he set himself to follow her into the room . . .
Sep 18, 2024 8:27 pm
Amalthea looks expectantly at their last companion to introduce himself before they are directed to check the closed door. She takes out her crossbow, holding it low, and follows behind Taniwha.

Sorry was going to put this earlier but work took priority.
As both Abraham and Drina give light to the hall you see underneath the hood for the first time. The most striking feature is the thick black mop of hair covering a large portion of the head. Dark red curled horns rolling out and back in, like two sea serpents cresting the darkened seas of night. Pointed ears push their way free from the hair that cascades around the sides of Taniwha’s head.

Not until you drop your gaze down would you notice the alert, piercing glaze of fire coloured eyes , watching everything going on. The pale face contrasted by two red streaks dripping down the forehead and cheeks. He appears young possibly just passing twenty years, with a lean but powerful build Taniwha would stand approximately five and a half feet tall.

When Taniwha motioned for silence, Abraham complied. Then everyone started talking again, so Abraham chimed in as well. "I am Abraham Van Kirk, Faithful of Lathander." She goes on her tippy toes to peer around the others and through the now open door.
Sep 20, 2024 2:32 am
When Drina knocks on the door and offers her soothing voice, the quiet sobbing stops. Opening the door, the party can see a wide, elegant bedroom covered in dust and cobwebs. Against the west wall is a large bed with an end table on either side. Two windows look out onto the lawn where the party first met, still impenetrably shrouded in mist. There are two exits from this room in the north wall: a small door that leads to a side room and a set of double doors that lead out to the third-floor balcony.

Tracking game through the forest trained one's eye. Broken grasses or fresh scat gave invaluable clues to tracking game, big or small, and so Drina put her hunting abilities to use. Benefitting from an untended house, Drina looked for clues in the dust and any disturbed cobwebs to see the truth in the situation. Someone had been crying. Now where could they have gone?
OOC:
I am not sure what skill you want to go with here. It seems tracking is listed under Survival but I think an argument could be made for Perception so please let me know for future rolls. Perception is just managing to spot something through focus, but it's not a process like tracking is. Both have their merits and flaws, but it looks like you're definitely describing Survival.

Luckily (or unluckily) for you, that means the Advantage applies here.
Drina enters the room and begins inspecting the layers of dust on the floor and the cobwebs strung along the baseboards. At the door to the side room, an ice-cold draft chills her to the bone—and it's one that she's felt before. Despite the disinterested look upon his face, Taniwha was shocked at the acceptance of his appearance. Those in his company had not reacted as any normal would, no angry or open disgust. He refocused on the job at hand, but the distraction was enough he had not seen the any warning of the attack once again. He moved to cover Drina.
Sep 21, 2024 1:34 am
Drina is wrapped in the icy blue mist of an undead spirit, a black and yawning face materializing in front of hers. She fights it off—this isn't her first ghost—and the blue mist shrinks into the form of a thin, sallow young woman in a shawl, ghostly tears streaking her face.

The ghost looks shocked, as if she expected to have prevailed in her attack. She puts her hands up. "I'm sorry! I won't do it again if you don't hurt me! I just had to be sure you wouldn't." She looks up timidly, awaiting your response.

In the natural world, anything living leaves its mark on its environment but the dead..... the dead are under no such obligation. Often the dead mock the living by leaving conflicting traces of life like sounds of tears without the drops of moisture to show a trail of tactile pain but Drina had been cultivating another sense that did not rely on her eyes and ears.

Calamir had been the one to introduce her to the ways of the undead. Her tuition for the education had only been her beloved parents. The original dark skinned, green eyed beauty, Drina's mother had had brusque manner with a commanding voice that brook no nonsense. One could be forgiven if one thought Valdy seemed an unlikely pairing to such a woman as he was a man who was rarely serious. However, if one saw them dance then no other explanation would be needed as two parts became whole. In the light of a campfire, shimmering golden dangles vibrated with energy as a muscular man twirled his love in a driving rhythm. It was a pale one devoid of his own blood who witnessed such a dance. His thirst had been stirred that night at the sight of such passion for life until he returned to drain those very vessels dry.

Yes, it was Calamir who had entered the family wagon cursing at arriving too late, helping to bury her parents and introduced her to the Society of the Juniper Berry. Such a mudane name that sounded like a lady's garden club but those that owned a sprig with berries were so much more than gossipy, tea sipping nobles: the SJB worked to restore the natural order of the world and return those beings that were dead back to death. A service to the world and a kindness to those stuck in the between.

Now that keen undead sense allowed the ranger to pick up reactions that played across her own body. Individual hairs along her arms prickled as her lungs burned at air suddenly cooled to the point that whisp of white smoke fluttered forward from every breath that exhaled from her body. Ohhhh, thought Drina, I know you.

No sooner did that thought form than a discorporal ball of light collide into Drina's light frame. Fancy footwork kept the ranger rocking from one foot to the other as the power of the impact was disseminated through her body like the wind through tree limbs. Moved but not broken.
Only to be followed by what Vai liked to call "The Big Scare". Perhaps not the most poetic of names but certainly accurate. But Drina wasn't afraid.

And it seemed the ghost had known that truth and was broken? Or a trick? Inhaling and exhaling deeply gave herself a moment to contemplate the one before her as Drina searched her mind for every piece of lore Granny, an associate of Calamir, had tried to stuff her with along with an apple strudel claiming men liked women that had curves. Drina didn't know about the quality of the "love" advice but Granny's undead knowledge was unmatched. Rumor had it that the older woman had even killed a vampire in her day even if time was ravaging her once nimble fingers with swollen joints. Now Granny's legacy was to instruct those who would follow her footsteps. As a rule of thumb, names were important and held power, "Very well. Tell me your name and your story and we shall see where we go from there."

Vasha holds her head, seemingly caught in a dream. "The gods cursed my poor baby, and I allowed it to happen. He grew fast, too fast. And became hungry. That's when the Mistress came after me. What my poor Walter became . . . it's the reason I can never leave this place. She took him, the poor thing, and. . . ."

Vasha goes still. "I don't want to remember. I still hear him sleeping under the house." After that, she stares each one of you in the eye. "You should never have come here, but it's too late. This place is cursed beyond your understanding, and it will never let you go."

Not for the first time does Taniwha look around and wonder if this is not all part of an illusion, had the Magician’s trap not teleported out of the city limits but trapped him within. The armoured ghast had seemed so real though. He restrained his compulsion to reach out and grab Drina, refocusing on the wailing ghost.

"Vasha, Who was your Mistress and Master? And who is Walter?" The Tiefling asks trying to mentally list the subjects spoken on.
Sep 24, 2024 11:45 am
"Her baby is Walter, from the sounds of it," Abraham suggests in response to Taniwha's query. "The children, Rose and Thorn, mentioned their mother taking their baby brother Walter into the basement where the monster was... but they made it sound like it happened just recently..."

Eyes narrowing, he looks to the spirit. "How long have you been trapped here?"
Sep 25, 2024 2:45 am
"My Master and Mistress were Gustav and Elizabeth Durst, wealthy beyond compare around these lands," Vasha says, then nods to say that Abraham has the right idea—Walter is her baby. Before she can say more, she seizes on Abe's mention of the children.

"You've spoken to them? They're alive?" She swoops up to Abraham, eyes wild with fear and hope. "Where are they? Safe? I knew their wicked mother would leave them alone, poor things.

She floats back, calming down. "So many people like you have come along, too many to count. That means it's been longer than days, maybe even—I don't want to believe that, but maybe years. We heard that a wealthy count had won our lands from the war, but one of the visitors said that was hundreds of years ago.

"But if you saw the children, then he must have misspoke. I can never go to them; that is part of my curse. Please make sure they're alright for me. They don't deserve any of this."

Fortune tellers did not wear the vestments or perform the sacraments of a priest but they did hear more than their fair share of confessions. Thus, the ghost's tale of an employer having eyes for the help was all too familiar. It was telling that Vasha didn't claim a great love to justify the illicit affair which meant more than likely the lord of the manner had used her employment as leverage to seek his pleasures.

The wife surely wasn't kind to Vasha when confronted with the evidence of her husband's infidelity. Even the excitement of her own children at having a new siblings must have felt like a betrayal. Had the bitterness of the situation poisoned the very root of the family tree until it decayed from the inside out? Because facts were facts: Vasha was a ghost so she was dead. Who had killed her?And what did she mean when the family was alive?

Pointing toward the knight as the name clicked, 'Yes, Walter! Walter is the baby we came in to save. Your baby. And the other children aren't dead, they are waiting outside for us. Help us save all the children. Surely there is a way to rescue Walter and still exit the house. You worked here, you must know its secrets. Maybe you will find peace once your child is safe."

Conversation with the dead, he had heard of it but never witnessed it. He thought of his own mother and how they had been ripped apart by the lust and envy of others, how her ghost still screamed for him to run. Had she found peace or did she still haunt the temple remains waiting for his return.

Caught up in his own thoughts he moved aside instinctively as the spirit swooped towards the Knight. He listened to the conversation compiling the information given, letting the other two guide the flow of information. As he did so his eyes crossed the hall to the secret door across the way . . . "That is right, surely you will know of passages not seen. Like that across the hall."
Sep 25, 2024 10:11 pm
Amalthea keeps her mouth shut, but shakes her head at the sad tale. Humans were no different than dwarves.
Sep 25, 2024 11:42 pm
Placing a few fingers against her temple, Drina's head throbbed with the swirling amount of information being revealed. "So those assembled had not been the only party that had visited the house. If as you say, the cursed house."

Hearing it again from her own lips didn't make it any easier to accept. If what was being hinted was even true then it made the pieces of this very confusing puzzle make sense. That is if the impossible could make sense."Years? Perhaps hundreds have passed? Then those were not Rose and Thorn that we met. And Walter....well we can not save him tonight but I do know some people that might help everyone find peace. We just need to retreat."

Green eyes bore into Taniwha, "When did you have time to find a secret passage?"

Shocked out of his funk by Drina’s comment, Taniwha shrinks back from the intense stare of those green eyes. He goes to answer but the words get clogged in his rapidly drying mouth, as if the drying air of his mouth was suffocating them. His own flame red eyes attempting to make contact with the accusing forest green as he merely shrugs, raising a clawed finger and pointed to the crease in the wall.

OOC:
@CherokeeWind Drina knows that almost all ghosts are either trying to finish some business they couldn't in life, or they need help properly laying their remains to rest.
Vasha
Vasha watches the tense standoff with mild interest, but she clearly has more pressing things on her mind. "I do not want to believe it's been that long, but I have no way of knowing. My last day alive was in the 335th year. Can any of you tell me what year it is now?"

Speaking mainly to Drina, she says, "That secret passage will reveal a staircase that leads up to the attic. There you will find the children's room, but Master Durst often kept it locked. I know not where he kept the key, perhaps in his study or den. There is a secret passage up there, in the storage room, one that leads all the way down to the basement. It is a dreary place where—" Vasha stops, seeming to choke on old memories. "—where the Mistress killed me. And where my Walter is. I can show you where to look; that room is the other to which I am bound. I can go nowhere else in the house. Just enter that room and I will appear with you."

Vasha floats to where all of you can see her face, which becomes grave. "Hear me well, now. You may find that there's nothing you can do to help Walter. And if it has been hundreds of years, there will be nothing you can do to help Rose and Thorn. If that happens, you must lay them to rest. It may be the best thing we can give them."
Sep 27, 2024 10:48 am
Abraham nods. "We will do what we can to right this wrong."
Sep 27, 2024 1:15 pm
Amalthea looks about the room they are in as the group talks. "Aye, my dear, I am not sure we know the year either. This house and land does not feel familiar to me at least. We will take care of the children, in whatever way we can help them now. We appreciate your honesty and the way to where Walter should be is very helpful. Do you know if there's anything in the house that will help us to protect the innocent or avoid those who would harm us?"
Sep 27, 2024 3:34 pm
Vasha
Vasha thinks for a moment. "Master Durst kept spells in the library, I am sure of it. I know not where he hid them, but he told me they would be part of the children's inheritance one day. Adventurers like you probably know what to do with things like that. Other than that, there are a few weapons in the house, but I see you are all well-armed.

"I must warn you, the basement is a true danger to both body and soul. I didn't get a good look at it when . . . you know . . . but I know its tunnels are extensive. I think most of it was there long before we arrived, dedicated to some nameless and ancient evil. The Mistress awoke it by slaying me, for she did not just kill me but made a horrible ritual of me; I saw many wicked people drawn to the evil beneath the house as though worshippers to a shrine. A simple nursemaid should not know of such things, but I feel it in my heart now that I am one of the undead. There are terrible things down there that will test both your sword and your wits.

"I am sorry I cannot do more for you. This place is one of great evil, and its very foundations want to see you fail. You are the kindest souls I have met in a long time, and I wish you only the best."
Sep 28, 2024 10:57 pm
Had the evil of this house misjudged? Surely there was a purity in the souls surrounding her as Drina watched each one vow to help those not even alive. Granted Tani was short on words but his actions bespoke the same sentiment. Perhaps the house hungered for those not yet tainted wanting to feast on undamned souls. But Drina intended for the evil to choke on her bones.

Looking about the room that had become a prison, Drina gazed at the ghost with compassion, "Your help has been invaluable, Vasha. Know we will do everything within our power to end this evil. May a righteous cause lead us to victory and you to peace."

But as the ranger was readying herself to charge forward, the reality of the state of her companions impressed itself on her as even now the blood on Abraham's bandage seemed to be growing. Fierce hearts would not win the battle ahead if bodies were not in fighting condition. "Now on a more practical side, the two of you look in dreadful condition. Perhaps we go back downstairs so you can catch your breath while we look for these spells. Hopefully, they are in the form of scrolls or potions as I have no magical abilities. Wouldn't it be ironic if the children's inheritance allowed us to save their very souls?"
Sep 29, 2024 1:11 am
Amalthea's dwarven instinct to seek treasure, some may call it greed, has her smile at Drina's suggestion. Wisdom would be to stay in this room on this floor where all enemies had been vanquished to rest, but she nods eagerly at Drina's words.

"Aye, capital idea my dear. We certainly need to rest and mind as well check for what Vasha has described afterwards."

She bows a little to the ghost.

"Aye, thank you and prepare to finally rest."
Sep 29, 2024 7:20 pm
As the attention moved away from him, Taniwha allowed the mask drop as a wave of pain washed over him. After a couple of coughs the Tiefling looks down at the blood on his wraps, the armour’s blow had done its damage. He quickly drops the hand hoping the others are distracted.

"Our thanks Vasha. Though the gods may have abandoned you, we will not." he says nodding his thanks to the trap soul and moving to the hall.
Oct 1, 2024 5:45 pm
Drina's descent did not mirror her earlier dive down the stairs. A natural grace flowed from her limbs as she lightly stepped on each riser. Pointing out the two suits of armor, the ranger didn't breathe easy until all had passed the potential threat.

Reaching the ground floor once again, the green eyed woman turned to Tani, "If you found that room upstairs in the dark, I trust that with a little light that you can see all. And this time we won't worry if the furniture gets scuffed. "
Oct 2, 2024 1:41 am
As you leave the bedroom, Vasha nods her head and disappears.

As Drina and company pass the second floor hall, they find that there are actually four suits of armor, two to the east and two to the west.

The ground floor is bitingly cold and the fireplaces are out, but there is enough light to see by even without Drina's lamp. The door to the den is shut. At this point, the party notices something strange about the decorative paneling—there are serpent and skulls lying in wait among the playing satyrs and nymphs.

She takes out the last of the moonshine she brewed last night and offers it to the rest of the party.

Yes, I vote for a short rest now

Now that Drina wasn't rushing past, details that had escaped her started to manifest. The mythical scene carved into the wood was tainted with symbols of death causing a shiver to work up her spine. Trying to play it off as a reaction to the chilly temperature, "One of the reasons I thought downstairs was a good idea was the comfort of that fire. I was just down here and the fire was blazing. Even if it burned out then that doesn't explain the chill. But look!" Drina pointed toward the doors that cut off the view of the den. "I don't think we are alone. Someone closed those doors. Perhaps we should wait out here as you recover before trying to confront any more threats."

Following Drina downstairs wincing at every step on the descent, he hadn’t been this bad since losing a back alley fight to a score of street thugs. Those green eyes catch him in the gaze again pulling him out of his memory. "I’ll have a glance over." It is about now he notices the shut door which was before open. "It could have been shut by the red headed one from out front, hopefully she wasn’t a trapped soul as well." He says in an attempt to calm himself as much as those with him.

He moves softly forward and examines the entrance as well as the surrounding area, avoiding to move or even touch anything unnecessarily.

Drina waved off the offer of firey spirits made by Almathea although she clapped her shoulder in thanks. The gypsy had shared her campfire with dwarves enough to know not to trust their wee drams. After a particularly murky night, the green eyed woman had woke to find herself short of a pair of her favorite boots while having one mad son of witch racoon tied up in her pillow case. Questions on what happened only lead to booms of laughter. No, dwarves and their drink were certainly suspect no matter how innocent they appeared.

Aa the possible danger presented itself, the ranger followed closely behind the tiefling as he crept toward the closed door readying to defend her resting companions.

Taniwha doesn't recognize the windmill; the design is pretty basic and would fit in any farming town or village. When he turns around, he sees the same thing everyone else does.

Standing in the middle of the room is a tiefling in dark clothes and hood, skin the color of blood and horns curling backwards out of auburn hair. Her eyes burn with an intensity as silent as her approach, and you realize that she could have easily had a knife around anyone's throat before they knew it.
Oct 8, 2024 9:08 pm
Drina knew there was a huntress within her. In moments when her nostrils flared to catch a scent or her vision would narrow down to focus on a far off detail, the ranger knew she was connecting to a more primal force than most others, a bit less civilized. So was it a surprise after feeling the rush of adrenaline and her body preparing to fight that she found the library being empty a disappointment? No, but reason stated it was for the best. Her companions needed the rest. With a mind toward practicality Drina had approached the fireplace with plans to restore the fire and banish the chill.

"Shit!" is the only word to slip from the Tieflings lips, as he springs to his feet and drops into a low defensive stance. How had he allowed himself to be so distracted, on the streets he would have been dead. His eyes searched the new arrival for signs of intention and glint of a weapon, though he did start thinking himself a little hypocritical as he recognised the telltale horns.
Oct 9, 2024 5:58 pm
Green eyes pivoted to the spot that Tani stood when he let out a curse. A lifted eyebrow and a questioning look suddenly morphed into alarm as Drina saw two tieflings where only one should be. The log cradled in her fist seemed solid but not solid enough but if she threw it then the ranger could draw her sword. "We're not alone, you're outnumbered so I suggest you drop any weapons you have," Drina firmly said in the voice used when telling Vai time for a bath had arrived.

Amalthea shrugs when no one takes her offer to drink and takes a large swig before putting the moonshine away. She sets herself down by Abraham and does some of her training meditations to calm down and review all they have encountered so far. Taniwha and Drina busy themselves investigating the area and her eyes begin to close as she feels almost safe when suddenly she hears exclamations and swishing movements.

She blinks hard, eyes wide open now, and sees a familiar sight. Her eyes move between Taniwha and the female tiefling, hooded and silent like he looked outside the house.

Amalthea grips her shield hard, prepared to use it at a moment's notice, but doesn't move.

"Aye lass, don't you know it's dangerous to sneak up on people with weapons?"

She tries to see if this newcomer looks like she is wet and came from outside like them or if she is dry and more likely another one of the strange residents of the house.
Oct 11, 2024 2:38 am
Shit! Narissa thinks, she was sure she could sneak past the group and find the exit. They had all been so preoccupied.

Standing up to her full hight, which isn't much at 5'5, she lifts her chin, "I don't know who you are, or why you brought me here, but I will not go easy. If you let me go I won't hurt any of you!

She makes no move towards the crossbow over her shoulder or the daggers at her hip. No move to drop or draw but her eyes do dart toward the rooms exits.

Amalthea looks at the others confusedly, but eases the grip on her shield. The tiefling seems less like a spirit with the way she is shouting.

"Right lass, don't hurt yourself with that shouting. Like my mate says, we certainly didn't bring you here. We were led to this house by unknown forces too. I'm Amalthea. And you are...?"

There was a tone that Vai, Drina's younger brother, had come to know too well. The pitch and cadence had actually come from Drina's mother but that memory had been lost with time but some things never are truly gone so the daughter now used it thinking it was her own. But which ever generation spoke, if that tone was used then action had better be following. Drina did not see any weapons on the floor and no one received a second warning. "You won't hurt me? I don't promise the same!"

Drina charged across the room to tackle the new arrival.

Guess rest time is over. Perhaps she'll go out the window they had cracked open?

She sees the new arrival crash into one of the taxidermy wolves they had initially seen and stops in surprise that it appears to have moved! Peeking down, around the others, she sees that the room is dark now, but the window she thought she had wedged open with a rock is now solidly shut.

She turns back to the strangers as the other Tiefling calls for calm, they’re ‘lost’ too.

She stays with her back to the wall, watching everyone closely, but doesn’t move to run or attack. Mostly she’s watching Drina. "I’m Narissa, I just woke up in that room. No idea how I arrived or where I am. Last I knew I was running from a bunch of goons through a back ally in Baldurs Gate."

Drina wasn't slow to react so the fact the tiefling slipped her grasp was telling. Perhaps fear was the motivator driving the new comer but whatever the reason, the tiefling was no longer in easy reach. The damn wolf now stood between them. Yes, the wolf that should have been stationary and planted across the room. Just another creepy threat from this house.

"Your story is not much different than the one told by any of us gathered in this room but no matter how we came, the house seems intent that we should not leave. Evil rituals performed in the basement have empowered the undead to prey upon the living lured here." The ranger shrugged her shoulders while the tone of her voice very much stated an indifferent attitude on whether her story was believed but Drina's green eyes held an intensity that spoke truth. "To be honest, it seems unlikely any of will see the morrow but I do not run from evil. If you choose to do so then go! I wish you the best. But, if you are tired of running then stand beside the living, join us and let's kill this evil!"

Taniwha pauses as Narissa mentions where she had been, Baldurs Gate. After an extended pause to gather his thoughts he simply answers, "I am Taniwha, and can promise you we only wish to leave this place."

Seeing as things appear to have calmed down -- at least, the fighting has stopped -- Abraham sheaths his blade. "The house is haunted. We've met one ghost for sure... and some of us suspect we've unfortunately met three. Work with us to get out of this place, will you? After we're all free, you can head wherever the winds take you, Narissa."

Returning to his seat, he adds, "Oh. I am Abraham by the way. Follower of Lathander."

Amalthea doesn't notice any sign of the wolves' passage. She does see that the room is now littered with dust and cobwebs—far from the cozy, inviting place it was before. The way the dust is settled on the wolves makes it seem like they were always in their new locations.

Thanks to Narissa's fire bolt, the fireplace blooms into crackling orange flame.
Oct 17, 2024 11:41 pm
Holding up her hands to show they were empty, human woman then skirted the perimeter to stand before the welcome warmth of the fire. Never actually turning her back on Narissa, the ranger was no longer overtly hostile but definitely still cautious. "Drina the Green-eyed Witch." The enigmatic smile that accompanied the declaration left Narissa not knowing if the woman was serious or not.

"I hope you don't mind but we were catching our breath before going,"
Drina pointed toward the basement. "And that thing you did with the fire...can you do that like three more times?" Words didn't define the target but anyone following Drina's eyes would see her look pointingly at the wolves.

"You want me to set the stuffed wolves on fire?" Narissa is a bit confused but amenable.

At Narissa’s question the lean pale skinned Tiefling grunts,"Taniwha." Before pick up his pack and Spear. "And yourself?" He continues and he moves towards the locked cupboard against the wall. Don’t have thieves tools, prechance?"
Oct 19, 2024 5:25 pm
"Sorry, I don't have any thieves tools on me at the moment." Looking around the room do I see anything that I could use as improvised thieves tools? Sewing needles and a letter opener or the like?
Oct 20, 2024 1:03 am
"Aye, sorry, if you didn't hear me before the scuffle, you may call me Amalthea. Thanks for the fire."

The dwarf steps over to the locked cupboard and pulls out her warhammer.

"Ey lad, if you still want this open, I can break it for you. Clearly the inhabitants do not need it anymore..."
Oct 20, 2024 3:28 am
Taniwha gives Amalthea a casual thumps up of approval to smashing the lock, while stepping away from any of the stuffed wolves spear at the ready.
Oct 21, 2024 6:37 pm
Amalthea nods with approval as Taniwha prepares for unpleasant surprises from the wolves and smashes the lock with her warhammer.
Oct 23, 2024 6:43 pm
Drina gritted her teeth as the newcomer announced her plans to the room at large. Of course, the ranger didn't know the extent that the wolves were sentient so speaking the words out loud to fireball the fur balls might not make a difference but it never hurt to error on the side of caution. Granted the second tiefling had not been attacked by suits of empty armor or actually witness the change in placement of the wolves but apparently Drina's speech had failed to convey the seriousness of their situation. "If the situation arises, I think it could be an effect move."

Ah...back to that damnable cabinet and the lock. But now knowing more of the history of the house, Drina thought it smart of her companions to focus on it. Anything the owners wanted to keep private would probably prove to be invaluable. The human watched the dwarf take a mighty swing expecting metal to twist and release.
Oct 24, 2024 6:13 am
Narissa sees nothing that can be used as improvised lockpicks, but that ceases to matter as Amalthea smashes the lock of the cabinet into two pieces of bent metal. Meanwhile, Narissa sets the wolves aflame. They char and melt into blackened lumps, the smell of burning hair and cotton filling the air.

Inside the now-unlocked cabinet are three crossbows hanging from the inside: a light, heavy, and hand crossbow. Each is well-oiled and glints in the firelight, and each comes with twenty bolts. As the party observes this, a sound like a door slamming open rings through the room. Really it's one of the wolves' glass eyes popping as it melts.
Oct 24, 2024 4:18 pm
The reverberation from the loud pop was only Drina's heart racing before returning to normal rhythms. "That was loud but I think "they" know we are here so it doesn't matter. Now let's see what treasures were unlocked."

Sliding what was left of the mangled latch, green eyes sparkled with pleasure as the cabinet revealed three different crossbow designs. "Oh look, at these beauties. Not what I was expecting to find but nothing in this house is." Reaching for the light bow, the ranger takes stock of the balance before looking at her companions. "Do you mind if I claim this one?"

Amalthea shrugs and smiles as the ranger Drina claims a crossbow that would suit her.

"Aye, I'm happy for treasure meself. I have a crossbow so I'll only take one if the rest of you don't need it. Maybe we can find that library now for what Vasha told us about."

Amalthea then turns and babbles to Narissa about the ghost Vasha they met above and her warnings of monsters and the potential for spells in the "master's" library. She has already decided to trust the new tiefling after her willingness to burn up taxidermied wolves with only a simple request.

Well, Narissa sighs, the room I came to in was definitely a dinning room. Other than here and the hall where I ran into you lot I’ve not got any idea of the layout of this place. Glancing around the room they’re in for anyplace that seems like a good place to hide one’s valuables.

The breaking or removal of locks never fails to excite Taniwha, one of the few things in life that does current not that his dower expression showed it, the anticipation of what is to be discovered behind it. The only sign of his excitement being a slight lean towards the cabinet.

In his uninterested tones he says while pointing to the hand crossbow, "I have seen one of these before, and have a small idea on how they work." again little body language signs point to a real interest in the weapon, even a childish joy.

OOC:
Going to see if Drina catches Tani's excitement. I'm guessing that probably does it.
Reading people told her at least as much as the tea leaves, the green eyed woman used to foretell the future. With that skill Drina knew there was.... something off about Taniwha's seemingly disinterest in the bows. And then it hit her! Vai would play a similar game pretending to be disinterested in the very thing he wanted. "So you have some knowledge of how these work? If you could show me then I perhaps could take both and I would be a double threat." Drina tried to keep the smile from creeping onto her face as she teased the tiefling.

The dower look if possible becomes even more so at Drina’s taunt, and his hand pauses unsure she is being serious. "Ah, best I handle it for now." he says forcing his hand forward and grabbing both crossbow and bolts. "I can show you later." he adds quietly as he turns checking the weapon over and sulking towards the door. "Shall we find this library."
Oct 28, 2024 5:02 pm
Amalthea nods, eager to find this library after getting her second wind from the rest and treasure hunting on the first floor. She takes out her warhammer and shield and prepares for whatever they will meet on the second floor. "Let's not get knocked out again, eh Abraham?"

Narissa quietly follows the group. Rolling the information about the house over in her mind. How none of them knows how they got here or where here even is. She poses a soft question to the air, "If everyone that has been met so far is a ghost... it may not be beyond the realm of believability that we're all... like that too."
Nov 2, 2024 6:54 am
The second floor is black without a fire to light it, forcing Drina to make use of her lantern. The main hall on this floor is 20' long and ends in a black marble fireplace. To the east and west are sets of double doors flanked by rusty suits of wolf-headed armor, each with a spear. Also in the east wall is a side door by the stairs.

There are unlit oil lamps around the room, and mounted above the fireplace is a family portrait. In it are Gustav and Elisabeth Durst, dressed in resplendent suit and dress, and two smiling children, Rose and Thorn. In Gustav's arms is a bundle that looks like a swaddled infant; while Gustav is beaming with pride, Elisabeth looks at the swaddle with clear disgust.
OOC:

Amalthea stops in her tracks when she sees the wolf-headed armors, staying as far back as possible to prevent potentially activating them.

"OK, any suggestions on taking down those things? Maybe knock out a leg so they can only hop, heh?"

Amalthea smiles a little, but her eyebrows are knitted together in worry.
Nov 2, 2024 11:58 pm
"We know what they are this time, we won't be caught off guard by them again," Abraham replies as he eyes the two suits. "And we have light. This fight will go very differently."
Nov 3, 2024 1:50 am
Narissa's words troubled the young ranger more than she wanted to admit. Could her companions be ghost...or worse, had the gypsy succumb to the same fate as her parents leaving her younger brother on his own? No! It couldn't be possible. With her own emerald eyes, Drina had seen these people bleed. Plus if there was one enemy the ranger knew and could feel in her bones: it was undead. Trust yourself.

Reapproaching the second landing, Drina drew the bow string taunt to her ear creating the tension needed to launch arrows down the entire length of the hall. "Still, I would rather deal with these suits on our timing than them close in behind us. Shall I take some target practice?"

Drina's arrow punches through the chest plate of the armor at the same time as a dagger knocks against the helm. The thing topples over, seemingly lifeless, but at the moment it crashes to the floor the empty helmet turns to face you and shatters to pieces.

Any inspection of the other suits of armor will reveal that they are just as lifeless . . . or appear to be. In any case, nothing jumps out at you and hall is yours to explore.
Nov 13, 2024 4:44 pm
Narissa will open the first door to her right. Cautious but curious. "I'm unsure of where you have already been? Are there any places you know you haven't been yet?"
Nov 14, 2024 3:51 am
Amalthea's tense shoulders sag in relief as Drina and Taniwha's attacks incapacitate the armor. It appears it was lifeless the whole time, but better to be safe than sorry in her mind. She readies her shield again and follows the new tiefling.

"Eh, we can follow your lead for now, lass. We explored the top floor and most of that first floor. We have yet to check on this floor and are told of monsters in the basement. I believe the plan is to finish checking this house, find the treasure in the library, then take the passage from the top to reach the basement."

Nov 17, 2024 4:02 am
The party enters the first room on the right. The little side door is afforded scant attention compared to the grand double doors further down, and one look beyond tells you why. This room is a small servants' quarters with two beds, each with a footlocker. In the wall to the west (behind you) is a dumbwaiter, and to the north is a tiny closet. At the back of the room, the wall bulges as if allowing a stovepipe to pass through.
OOC:
Assuming you want to move on to the double doors. Don't worry, Taniwha can tell you that there are no traps. EDIT: This is just an attempt to speed things up on my end. Feel free to spend as long as you like in the servants' room, and to go anywhere else as well.
These double doors are dusty and rough; it's clear they haven't been oiled in centuries. They swing open to reveal a large, opulent library. The place would be pitch black without the party's lamps and torches, since red velvet drapes cover the many windows that line the north wall. Against that wall and opposite the party is an exquisite mahogany desk and a matching high-back chair. There is another black marble fireplace here, and above it is a framed picture of a windmill perched atop a rocky crag. Situated in corners of the room are two overstuffed chairs. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves line the south wall, forming a small aisle, with a rolling ladder to allow one to more easily reach the high shelves.
Nov 17, 2024 6:44 am
With nerves running high it would be easy to pass by the less obvious servant's quarters for the opulent library. However, the one to give the most help to the party had been a servant so wisdom did not support ignoring those so often overlooked. Secrets were held by those watching but not allowed to speak.

"I'll cover the dumbwaiter if someone wants to slide it open. Just being overly cautious but I want to know it's empty before checking the footlockers. The ghost we spoke to didn't mention other staff so I wonder the identities of these two and the roll they played in the shenanigans of the house."

Opening the door of the dumbwaiter reveals an empty shaft. The dumbwaiter is far below you, a wooden bucket attached to a rope-and-pulley system. There is a small button next to the door here, which probably rings a bell on the first floor. Narissa and Drina notice that someone small enough (a Small creature) might be able to squeeze into the shaft and fit snugly in the dumbwaiter itself.

Other than the dumbwaiter, there is nothing much of interest in this room. The beds are stuffed with straw; the footlockers are empty. The closet contains nothing but dusty, moth-eaten uniforms: a suit and a dress.
Nov 21, 2024 4:29 am
"Shall we make sure nothing uses this?" Drina points her thumb toward the dumbwaiter. "Will someone with a knife cut the rope?" Looking back over the room, Drina knocks on the wall to see if the ring of metal echos from behind the wall. "I don't feel like we could have been any more thorough but it seems this room is a bust. Unless someone disagrees, we should continue to the library."
Nov 21, 2024 2:34 pm
"Aye, I can cut the rope with an arrow if you want. Yes, let's find that library!"

A greedy gleam appears in the dwarf's eyes as she takes out the arrow to cut the dumbwaiter rope.
Nov 21, 2024 11:23 pm
Having had enough of waiting, Taniwha silently steps forward producing a blade from somewhere within the folds of his clothes. In the dull light there is a quick flash of steel as he cuts the rope while holding onto the bucket, making sure it does not fall into the darkness below.

Without even so much as a grunt he places the bucket onto the floor and starts moving towards the library.
Nov 22, 2024 2:43 pm
Amalthea is a little surprised at the quickness of Taniwha's actions, but she shrugs and puts the arrow away. She takes a quick look into the bucket to see if there is anything inside or a clue about what lies in the basement.
Nov 27, 2024 4:54 am
The bucket is just that, and currently empty. Looking into the dark dumbwaiter shaft, one gets the impression that it leads down to a kitchen, but not to the basement. Drina's investigation reveals that there is a metal stovepipe behind the wall. This further supports the idea that the room below is a kitchen.

The bones of the library were solid covered in luxurious appointments that age could only dim but not extinguish. Back when the family had lived within these walls, this room would beckon as a place to catch up on personal correspondance written with elegant flourishes or to curl up in one of the overstuffed chairs sipping a steaming cup of tea sweetened with a touch of honey while pouring over a detective novel only to gasp as the killer was finally revealed. But, no. Scenes like that were for normal families and this family had been far from traditional. So, it did seem off that this room did not immediately show the family's darker side. What were they hiding in this slice of normalicity? "Tani, you know how you found the secret staircase? Maybe you should see if something similar is in here. Everything seems a bit too mudane. Even the picture doesn't have disturbing images." Walking by the bookcase, Drina's eyes scanned titles to anything that might seem of interest.

"I know everyone is wondering what could possibly be in the desk. Perhaps, Narissa should do the honors. If the inheritance is indeed a spell then she would be the one most likely to recognize it. Please, if you will," extending an arm toward the carved piece of furniture.

Narissa finds nothing suspicious about the left wall. She casts her spell and the fireplace crackles to life, filling the room with bright light. Meanwhile, Taniwha scans the floor and walls and finds no traps.

Drina and Amalthea investigate the bookshelves on the other side of the room. They hold treatises on all subjects: history, warfare, alchemy. There are even some thick volumes of poetry that look particularly expensive. The ranger notices an oddly stiff book that doesn't budge under her hand. She realizes it might be a secret lever.

As Narissa walks to the desk, the party notices some jerky movements that betray her nervousness. The desk has several items resting atop it: an oil lamp, a jar of ink, a quill pen, a tinderbox, and a letter kit. The kit includes a red wax candle, four blank sheets of parchment, and a wooden seal bearing a windmill crest.

If Narissa decides to open the desk (there are no traps), the only thing inside is a heavy, rusted iron key.

"A key? Interesting. It looks weighty so logic would dictate that what it unlocks should be of substance too but not necessarily obvious." Drina mentally ran through the rooms previously explored trying to remember any item that could have been a cleverly camouflaged container but nothing came to mind. "Bring it with us and we will find what it unlocks."

Knocking along the wall of the book case, Drina listened carefully for any sound that might indicate something less than a solid wall behind the wall of books. Lifting her light, the ranger carefully examines the floorboards to see if there had been any wear caused by a swinging door that was not obviously visible. "I found something too! I'm not sure what role this book plays but I think it's a lever of some kind. Does someone with more nimble fingers than me want to give it a try?"

Taniwha’s approach had not revealed anything, libraries had always had a calming effect on the young man. A place of quiet self reflection and where the voices of others were silenced. Perhaps it had been the comfort of the tall selves or the smell of paper, but his normally perceptive self had struggled.

Disappointed with himself, Taniwha reluctantly moped over to Drina pulling his hooded coat back on to hide in the shadows once again. "What have you found?" he simply says, or grunts, as he rounds the corner at which she had call from. "Perhaps I can help?" quickly follows as those green eyes fall upon him in a voice that cracks.

No tea leaves were needed to read the dwarf's body language every time the possibility of a bit of loot was brought into the equation so the ranger thought it would be exactly where she would want to be.

After he doesn't find any traps, Taniwha pushes on the fake book. When it doesn't budge, he thinks about all the levers and switches he's seen in his life and realizes this one is probably just stuck from rust and age. Using that knowledge, all it takes for him to pop the lever free is to readjust his stance and try again.

Now that the book is free, a push slides it easily into the shelf. At the same time, the section of bookshelf at the east end of the room swings open to reveal a secret room. When Taniwha lets go of the book, the door swings back shut and becomes flush with the bookshelf again.

Amalthea, Abraham, and Taniwha find that beyond the secret door is a narrow room not wider than the doorway leading into it. This room is another, smaller library the size of a large walk-in closet. The walls are packed with bookshelves, and the subject matter here is markedly more sinister: rituals for demon summoning and necromancy, all dedicated to something called the Cult of Osybus. Against the back (south) wall of the tiny library is a skeleton in battered leather armor. The corpse has its head stuck in a heavy wooden chest with clawed iron feet.

The righthand (west) wall bulges a bit, since this is the wall the stovepipe passes through. The door will stay open as long as Drina and Narissa keep the lever pushed down.
Dec 4, 2024 3:16 pm
Abraham will see if he can find a book about this cult in general, since it suddenly seems a great deal more relevant. "I wonder if this cult is still a factor?"
Dec 4, 2024 10:50 pm
"The suspense is killing us....what have you found? Remember to keep your eye out for something that might need a key." Drina exchanged arms as she held the book pulled forward.
Dec 5, 2024 1:43 am
"I can switch you out when you need," Narissa offers, "just say when."
Dec 5, 2024 8:06 am
Abraham peruses the books, but none of them seem to contain any information about the cult itself. In fact, the author assumes that the reader is already a part of the cult, because who else would have access to these texts? He does learn that members of the cult are called Priests, and that they seem awfully focused on rituals that draw forth and bind the souls of their enemies.

In fact, based on the dust and corrosion, it looks like the trap has been harmless for centuries.

Taniwha has to move the skeleton to get to the multiple items in the chest, which turn out to be several books and scrolls. The three books are bound in black leather and blank; they could probably go for 25 gp each.

The rest of the items are scrolls: three of them are clearly magic by the way the letters squirm and shift under Taniwha's gaze, unreadable; one is the deed to the house; one is the deed to a windmill; and the last is a signed will bequeathing everything in this chest and all other family property to Rosavalda and Thornboldt Durst in the event of their parents' deaths.

After all this, Taniwha notices a final scroll clutched in the bony hand of the corpse. This one is bears a shiny red seal, but it's not the Dursts'. Instead, this crest depicts a raven in flight before a cameo of a gloomy castle in the distance.
