After resting in the dome, Darazen is the last to awaken. It was uneventful, except for the tension earlier when Tara and Birtwood decided waiting here was a bit too dangerous. Tara assured your all that she would be on the surface.

Vult has spent a little time trying to rig the gravity detonator to go off remotely and he thinks he got it. I also was able to salvage parts from the commander's body.

Khoren sits staring at the frame, holding the commander's sword.

What's everyone wanting to do?
Mar 3, 2015 9:17 pm
Darazen stirs feeling much better. He looks around and does a quick head count.

"Where's Tara? She's not gone through the portal now has she? Oh, and where's Birtwood?"
Mar 3, 2015 9:21 pm
(I would also like to expend a second rest for an extra hour, if Darazen rested that long.)

Utazó rises to her feet after her break and walks back towards the portal. Noticing the work Vult has done with the detonator she turns and asks, "Why is everyone so eager to destroy our only real lead into what is happening down here? Darazen said the he had visions of some sort of waterfall", Utazó stops and points at the portal and its running water. "One of the creeps we had said something about 'Onba Pha', and I'm pretty sure whatever the hell that is has an door named after it on the other side of this thing."

Strolling back towards the entrance of the chamber, "I think we need to investigate this, at least go there and poke around a little, but if that's not what the rest of you want to do then I'll stick with the group. Either way, destroying this thing will only let anyone on the other side know that something's wrong. Something they don't as of yet know, which can only be to our advantage."

Reaching her previous resting spot, Utazó crouches down next to Khoren who continues to rest. "I'll keep an eye on the hallway while you guys recover from that last fight", she says as she scans the approaching hallway. "Come back, Tara, we're going to need your help no matter what we decide to do."

"I am hoping to get everyone's input before doing anything. However, I feel that destroying the portal presents the best opportunity for keeping this 'queen' from sending more reinforcements to harry us. She knows where we are, after all." Vult replies.
Mar 3, 2015 11:52 pm
"Now I've rested I feel much better. I think we should go through the portal. We don't know where the Assassin's Heart is. It seems logical it may be this side of the portal as we are encountering the queen's troops, but she may be sending them everywhere. I think Utazo is correct. We should press on to find this queen and thwart her plans."

Darazen pauses. "We can't trust anything I was told. This queen is evil and her forces are totally dominated by her. I am not happy. I want revenge. We should stop her from finding the Heart, and as we don't know where to find the Heart then our best lead is to find the Queen."
Mar 4, 2015 12:17 am
After her rest with Darazen, Yui rises and starts pacing. "We've rested, but her goons could come through any moment. Someone needs to grab Tara, or we need to go up with her. I'd like to see sunlight as well, but this portal needs some attention.
Okay...I say let's go through or get out of this damned stinking room, we're not accomplishing squat just sitting here chatting.
We need to do something...I guess my vote is for going into that portal, or leaving these caves entirely."

It'd really not kill me to see some sunlight...these damn caverns are getting to me... but I'm not running away like Tara, I can't let my friends down. Hope Tara's okay though, I'm itching to check on her.

Yui leans on the wall next to Darazen, and whispers to him silently. She seems on edge.

Merlin says:
"I think we should go through the portal."
Khoren's mood has grown darker and darker in the hour of inactivity, but he noticeably brightens at Darazen's words, and all but leaps to his feet. He tucks his new sword in his belt, waves away the mud accumulated during his rest, and approaches Vult.

He whispers to Vult, "when you're preparations are complete, we should enter this portal. If we encounter opposition, we can run back through and destroy it behind us." Khoren turns to Yui, Darazen and Utazo, and speaks loudly so they can be sure to hear. "All our answers may lay on the other side. They've gone to considerable effort to capture cyphers, and to deceive us."

He looks to the tunnel. "Any sounds from that way? Any sign Tara met trouble?"
Mar 4, 2015 2:47 pm
Darazen says, "I think it is decided. We are nearly unanimous to pass through the portal. We just need to persuade Tara."

Darazen reaches out telepathically to Tara to encourage her return.

(ooc: strictly speaking I don't think I have the range to do this, but I'm hoping in the interests of moving on, GM will allow a concession just this once).

Yes, you are too far away to make a link with her, especially since you never have before (if you did, it was brief) and your target has to be willing.

Tara comes strolling back into the dome room after a little over THREE hours. She's not wearing her mask, it's in her hand.. and she looks at you all and shouts "You obstinate wankers!"
She glances around at each of you..
"Birtwood did not like being underground.. He mentioned several times he wanted sunlight.. but you couldn't be torn away from your shiny portal to even give him some peace.. Except for you Vult.. You actually helped him by tending his wounds. All the rest of you just wanted to plop down and not give a damn about him and only think of yourselves."
Tara glares at all of you and continues..
"Birtwood is now with his people.. My suspicions have been confirmed.. The Steadfast IS under major attack and are marshaling everyone to the defense of the realm. I'm willing to go through the portal with you now that I *know* my loves ones are not completely defenseless. The invasion goes even into other territories: Navarene, Thaemor, even Iscobal. Furthermore, Birtwood has promised me that they will let the Aeon Priests know of the location of this portal.. Hopefully they can figure more out and perhaps find the infiltration points that seem to be all over the Steadfast... They are causing a lot of damage and unrest as they hunt and kill for Numenera. So now, if I get stuck on the other side of that portal in a foreign land, I can feel some pride that I've done my duty. I still think we should secure this side of the portal, by checking the other path we haven't checked in these caves.. but I'm willing to do something only marginally tactically stupid if you all insist on not doing it."
With that, Tara puts her mask on.. grabs her sword-staff.
"Well? What now."

"I still think that the most tactically sound approach is to destroy the portal. Cuts off reinforcements, that sort of thing." Vult replies, a bit hesitant at Tara's comments. "Though I seem to be in the minority."
Mar 5, 2015 9:35 pm
"Thanks for the lecture. Would have been much more helpful to give it before running off in a tizzy", Utazó says as she continues to watch down the hallway. "Glad she's back!"
Mar 5, 2015 10:37 pm
"Oh, you're not the only one Vult." Tara says "But we are the two newest people to this little group, they picked me up only shortly before we rescued you. I can't as easily turn off my morals to sit in the dim light of this underground cavern and rest while I hear someone near begging for sunlight and the surface, especially when I know it's a short walk down an already cleared passageway.".. Tara's mask looks a tad perturbed at that last statement..
"Since the Steadfast is alerted..and indeed it's worse than I feared; I can see a tactical advantage now in going through the portal and gathering more information, especially as Birtwoods people will pass the information we have gathered so far to an Aeon priest."
Mar 5, 2015 11:00 pm
(Ooc: wankers? I didn't think Americans know what that means, and I'm pretty sure the British have copyrighted it).

Darazen stands up and brushes himself off after Tara's speech. "I'm glad that's settled" he says nonchalantly. "I can't wait to see what's on the other side of this portal." He winks at Yui, "Let's see if we can find that Queen."

As he approaches the portal he turns to Khoren. "Have you checked that tracker lately?"
Mar 5, 2015 11:57 pm
(OOC: Damn Tara, you're right, Yui would have gone with Tara if she had known she had taken Birtwood with her. I thought Birtwood was unconscious when you left? I agreed with Vult when he said that you're not dragging a 350 pound tree by yourself, but you somehow did. Like I said, wasn't Birtwood down and out? And calling Yui a wanker was a little hurtful, you putz. XD)

"How did you leave with Birtwood? (seriously?) I thought you strolled out, taking the piss! And I was worried, believe it or not, so you better not do it again!" With a small hint of mock teasing, Yui smiles and gives Tara a hug.
"Now that we're all happy campers and Birtwood is miraculously taken care of, can we stop yammering and get along with our best-stupid plan yet?"

She pulls her katana out of the impaled mudman and sweetly offers it gore encrusted to Khoren. "If you wouldn't mind?", and with that, Yui steps on the side of the frame, and waits for her katana back and the others to enter with her.

(OOC: Birtwood was conscious, I escorted him out. He helped kill the commander. It was the commander that was dead and I was going to drag to the surface so Vult could gather the Numenera. You are thinking of the FIRST commander fight when Birtwood was down, the darkness was up, and I was facing off against the commander. Easy misunderstanding. Oh, and I stated I was taking Birtwood with me multiple times...)

Pulling out the compass, it seems to pointing to... to you. You straighten up and press the button to unfold it. The screen appears and gives you a reading of 2 ft.

~That cannot be right, can it?~

(What is the tracker tracking? If it's tracking Tara that'd make perfect sense, after all.. Also, it's okay Khoren, anyone who cleans Yui's weapons gets her recommendation no matter how creepy he is)

Backing away from Yui, and away from the others, he checks the tracker again. If it still reads right on top of him, he'll stick the commander's sword in the ground and back away from it. ~Is it the sword? Is a sword the 'heart of an assassin? That would make some sword of sense. Haha, I see what I did there.~

Darazen's interest is tweaked by Khoren's statement that the tracker is pointing just 2 feet away. "Hold on a moment! That can't be right! It was tracking something 250,000 miles away not long ago and now it's only 2' away? I don't believe it!"

As you pass your hand over the compass/tracker device, you find it is a level 7 artifact. Once activated, it produces a piece of synth material that attaches and camouflages itself to whatever it is tracking. The range of this device is unknown, but in your Numenera book there are examples of ones that have kept locked on for hundreds and thousands of miles (across the steadfast, past the mountains and into the beyond).

Your hand passing over the sword reveals nothing from the sword itself. However, you do see two synth "dots" on the hilt. Both blend in and disappear into it. (ooc: I gave you that from the first scan as you knew what you were looking for.)

The first dot is definitely a tracker. The second dot is unknown.
Mar 6, 2015 1:49 am
Khoren holds the tracker absently towards Darazen, his eyes focussing on the sword. "Why would they keep such close attention on this sword? It's more than just a simple sword, but not THAT much more." Khoren turns predatorially toward the portal, a hardness entering his eyes. "Let's go ask them."

And strides toward the portal.
Mar 6, 2015 2:14 am
As Utazó leaves her position at the entrance of the chamber she watches Khoren and Darazen closely as they inspect the sword. "That's the assassin's heart? The sword? Interesting."

"I think we should return this precious item to Queen personally!" she says with a sly smile. Walking into the portal she looks back at the others and says, "Last one in is an abhuman's ugly...."
Mar 6, 2015 2:50 am
"Not me." Yui sheathes her katana and follows Utazo into the portal.
Mar 6, 2015 4:35 am
Darazen doesn't take the device but merely looks at it. "Well, I can tell you with some certainty that this tracker" (pointing to tracker) "is tracking this sword." (pointing to sword). "Interesting. That means..." Darazen's voice trails off as he realises no one is listening and are instead heading to the portal. Not wanting to be an abnormal's ugly (whatever that is) he hurries to the portal.

(Ooc: I think that means our captain was tracking this sword, and the commander holding it was hundreds of thousands of miles away when Khoren first used it.... Meaning the other side of the portal is hundreds of miles away. Darazen tries to verify this through a memory check).

OOC: OK. Is everything stated by the grandmaster public knowledge, or are we supposed to wait for the person the grandmaster is interacting with to tell it to us? I thought it was the latter, but I'm watching people use the former.
Example: Darazen just said that Khoren stated it was pointing 2 ft away.. except Khoren never stated that. Grandmaster TOLD Khoren that, and Darazen thought that.. but I didn't read where Khoren specifically said he was telepathically telling Darazen that.. So then Darazen's acts, grabs the device and ID it.. and grandmaster for some reason grants that action even though it's based on seemingly player knowledge and gives them even more information... and so on.. and so on..

So.. Again.. I ask.. Do we just ASSUME everything stated by the grandmaster is known to all, or are we supposed to wait until someone releases the information? If I've been doing it wrong the entire time, then please, let me know so I can assume the correct model of information dissemination. I'll be happy either way you choose.. I just want to know if I know things or not.)

OOC: I try to keep to the later as well, but sometimes forget what Utazó knows vs. what I know.
Mar 6, 2015 12:57 pm
Ooc: Darazen specifically asked Khoren to look at the compass twice and therefore was taking specific interest in it. I assumed that when the compass pointed he could see that too, particularly as Darazen is telepathically bonded to Khoren. Furthermore, I don't imagine cyphers are tuned to individuals, but technological objects we interact with. If a cypher has a flashing light everyone can see the light. If it has an arrow everyone can see the arrow. If it transforms into a spider everyone can see the spider. In this case I imagined the device to point and have a digital display showing distance. Can't we use imagination? I don't see what the problem is.

"Getting Birtwood back to the surface was good, but he's still a target, and this thing can supply reinforcements to capture him." Vult mentions. "Just surprised they haven't sent anyone through yet, unless they're massing on the other side." He sighs. "I don't suppose we have anyway to see what's on the other side before our ill-rated plunge through it."

(ooc: by the way, if we are taking things literally, I am wondering what we all did for the 3 hours Tara was away. (ooc: Agreed Kai. I just think personal attacks should be kept to PMs. In a pbp game we can't all be perfect. We may miss something, we may misread something, we may interpret something differently. We may have a different perspective on something. We may want to do something that takes longer than someone else. Ultimately we have to be flexible to make this work. If a player makes a mistake ina post that needs correcting I suggest you PM them, and if they agree they can edit their post. We also have a strategy thread for disputes. I'm done anyway... I'm saying nothing more... back to the portal).
Mar 6, 2015 4:01 pm
(OOC: WOW. I'm sorry I used an example that contained you Merlin.. I should have used one of the other examples. This was just one of the clearest and most recent ones to use. I'm sorry I was honestly confused as to how you could possibly know that and why the GM accepted it and gave more information made me think that perhaps ***I*** misunderstood if everything the GM posted was public knowledge or not... WHICH WAS WHY I ASKED! If you feel I personally attacked you then I am sorry, that was not my intention at all. I'll just STFU)
(Addendum OOC: I understand some tempers could be flayed a bit because of the issues that just happened with me going to the surface. The grandmaster never told me 3 hours, or I'd have used that timeframe and maybe you wouldn't be around at all, or would have come looking for me.. I took an hour and 10 min rest.. and it was my understanding it was a short walk. So when I said "a little over an hour", I believed it, and the GM never indicated to me otherwise. Nothing in my PMs with him made me feel it took over an hour and a half to get to the surface and do what happened.
Further: I understand that some people might be upset about my having held up postings for a day. Let me tell you that Tara's reasoning was not only completely tactical, but also directly in line with her training, morals, and duty. I'm sorry I can't just "break" my entire character concept to allow for 'majority rule'. If I did that I'd be playing a broken character, and any of you that have gamed for long periods know that playing a broken character that you willingly destroyed isn't much fun. I even told the GM that if it couldn't be resolved and the party ended up splitting that I'd create a new character; because I would rather throw this character away with respect and play a new one. I'm sorry that slowed down the campaign, and I can understand why there might be some resentment towards me for that. I apologize, but I'd do it again.)

(OOC: Just so everyone is aware, I know the GM is: I get confused. I've gotten even more confused after this last heart attack about 3 weeks ago, and it was happening with some frequency before that even. Entire conversations, even events, people have to remind me of because I do'nt remember.. So I'm constantly re-reading things and by the end wondering if I missed something or not.. and usually I dismiss it if it's something small.. but when the GM is responding to it and I can't resolve it, and I know he's unavailable today.. I had to frame it so you could understand what I was trying to ask and why I'm confused. My mind locked onto the thought of 'maybe the gms posts are open knowledge'? and it wouldn't let go.. but that didn't seem right to me and figured it was a mistake.. but then why would the gm give out more knowledge on a mistake and my mind just went into a vicious circle from there. Again, I'm sorry I caused all this drama over the last day or so..)

(ooc: Wow, Grant, I'm sorry to hear about your health troubles. I for one don't mind players headed in different directions, with different motivations. If we roleplay ourselves separate ways, then that is fine with me. Don't stress over it. As you say, play your character the way that we see fit. Only, if I were to make one suggestion, please realize that we are trying to do the same. So, if we don't follow you, it isn't necessarily because we're meta-gaming or making bad tactical decisions.)
Mar 6, 2015 7:26 pm
Don't worry about it Grant, life is confusing enough without text based storytelling and health issues. I completely respected your decision by the way, I get very uppity about characters too and would rather see them dead, raped (sorry, harsh language, but it's true), and broken before they bow to something that isn't like them. Yui would have followed Tara if I knew she was taking Birtwood, I thought that she just wanted some time alone.

If Yui ends up stabbing Tara because of our rivalry, as long as it's in character, I'll defend that decision till the day we both die, so rest easy, dude :)

LOL Kai! But Tara doesn't have a rivalry with Yui.. Yui has one with Tara. ;) I wish I knew Japanese.. It'd make watching Anime easier.
I realize we are all RP'ing different ways, and *I* understand why you might not want to leave the portal.. but Tara has a different set of priorities she had to follow. The metagaming question was me not comprehending, the tactical 'lecture' was Tara's viewpoint of things, roleplay, and she escorted Birtwood to the surface because her priorities were different. As I said, if I were playing a different character, such as a greedy rogue, I'd have been on the other side of that portal with Utazo and probably already scouting it. I get the different motivations thing. I'll try to be more lax and relaxed..
Mar 7, 2015 3:33 am
~Eh.. Screw this. Let someone else be the ugly abhumans @#$%^ for a change~ Tara thinks, then steps through the portal.
Mar 8, 2015 4:00 am
OOC: I am glad you got that all out of your system while I was gone and were able to work things out.

I think I cleared the air a little in the "Rules" thread, but ... when I post something, it is because I assume we are all sitting around the table and everyone will hear it. If it is something that is targeted to a single person, like what would be said through a sheet of paper passed between GM and a player, it would be a PM. Now, that is not to say that when it is within a post, everyone in the party can act upon it. For example, I did not let Darazen nor Yui have a chance to see the shins pinging Tara because of distance. I did let Darazen act on the scanner because they were linked and because Darazen told him to look at it and was waiting.

Last thing, when you do have these discussion, I feel OOC is okay for a comment, a sentence or two. However if we need to stop the game to discuss something, please take it into the stragetizing thread. If the thread is too long, make a new one. If you cannot, then ask me and I will. Thank you.

With that, onto the game.
Mar 8, 2015 4:54 am
Okay, I am now making an assumption that you all have stepped through the portal. I know Khoren and Darazen were working with the scanner, but were also anxious to get through (and yes, Darazen, I got your memory roll in there somewhere, the reply will be a PM).

Thru the water:

As you step into the water curtain, you have the feeling of getting wet, but it is not all. You get the feeling of being pulled forward too and you see streaks of light pass by and through you. The tug gets stronger and you twist slightly. The pull subsides and you feel a dryness and warmth, the cool air. You find yourself on the other side of the synth frame, only this room is not a dome and not made of stone.

You are in the center of a room, 60 ft in all directions. Behind you is a synth frame just like in the domed room. The frame is clean and lights flickering on the sides with the same water flowing in the center.

The floor is a synth-mental, bright white and spotless. The room has three identical walls made of the same material as the floor. Four feet up the walls, the synth turns clear and as the walls meet the ceiling, the last six inches of the wall turns back to the bright white metal.

The ceiling is 12 feet above you and is the same stark white as the floor. There do not appear to be any seams. While there does not appear to be any glow panels visible, the room is well lit. The air is clean, clear of the musty smell of dirt and mud.

Inset into the wall directly in front of you, there appears to be a door. It it is closed and it too has a seamless, clear panel. There does not appear to be anything on the other side of the door from where you are standing.

Utazó turns and looks at everyone. When the last one comes through, she points to a sign above the door and chimes in, "Welcome to onba pha".
Mar 8, 2015 5:19 am
Stepping into the room, Yui shakes her head. "Trippy."
She crosses to the door and runs her hands along it's surface, fingers hesitating near the clear panel. "Hmm, someone with numenera know-how want to mess with this?" While waiting, Yui absentmindedly tries to remove the sign above the door.

Khoren will go to the wall and look out through the clear parts. He wraps his cloak around him defensively, but then absentmindedly, he draws the scanner out and checks the reading. *** Darazen, will you assist Yui? ***

Out loud, he says "We may need to retreat if we run into strong opposition. If the halls and rooms all look like this one, we may find it difficult finding our way back." He continues, "let's find out what this place is, and live to tell the tale to the people back home."
Mar 8, 2015 12:06 pm
Darazen looks around the room with a critical eye. "Looks rather sterile and synthetic. Even my mother didn't keep our house this clean." Darazen is curious about the materials. He sees Yui run to the door and try to take down the sign. Then he hears Khoren say **can you help Yui**. He raises an eyebrow and responds telepathically to Khoren, ***you want me to help take down the sign? Not my scene.*** Darazen was joking because he was pretty certain Khoren was reinforcing Yui's request to investigate the door.

Darazen moves towards the door and with a dramatic flourish, spreads his arms and chants a little. In truth the gesture isn't necessary at all, but he likes to do that so his companions know what he's doing.

Utazó steps aside as the others come through. She folds her arms and watches as Khoren walks to the windows and Yui, Tara and Darazen step towards the door. A slight grin forms on her face while she waits to see their reactions to this strange place.

Khoren: Steps up to the window to look outside.

The building you are in is on a ridge of stark white rocks and dust. The sky is as dark as night and there are stars, more than you can count. Low on the horizon, a blue and white moon is starting to rise. The sun is on the opposite horizon. This place is like nothing you have ever seen before.

Looking below into the valley, there are scattered large domes connected by tubes. Most of the domes appear to be filled with fauna, vegetation and trees, though some appear to be smashed or damaged. Tubes run from the domes up the valley sides into smaller cubes, which in turn have tubes that run into other cubes of various sizes.

Like the domes, some of the cubes appear to be damaged and without power while others have lights. Some sections seem to better lit than others.

Across the valley on the opposing ridge is a large metal structure, oddly shaped and slanted to one side. The construction is not like what you are in. The metal is gray and the lights have a bluish tint. The tubes and cubes near it are smashed and broken, the damage extensive.

http://www.numenerajournals.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/map-onba-pha-600x476.png

Yui, Tara and Darazen: You walk to the door and as you approach within 5 ft of it, it opens with a woosh (not a swish, we don't have license for that!). You see a hallway with stark white walls, going down about 60 feet before ending in a T intersection. As the party approaches the door, small square sections of the white wall start to glow and expose smooth glass panels, lighting up on the wall on either side (left and right about 4 ft from the floor) of the door.

Yui reaches for the top of the door and tries to remove the sign, only to realize it is not attached, but embedded or molded into the wall.

A glow flickers on the each wall as two panels fade in on the walls outside the door on either side.

Vult steps through the frame and looks around. Seeing the door, he falls in step with the rest. He sees the door open as Yui and Tara make their in front of it, taking up defensive positions. ooc: Hate to make you waste the roll, but the door is not locked.

Facing the right wall she places the blade against it and makes a foot long slice. She watches intently as the wall starts to heal itself, looks over at Tara, motions towards the healing wall, and says "Weirdest damned thing I've ever seen."

She then crouches down as she sheaths her dagger, keeping an eye on the doorways that she had seen on her previous visit.

Tara jumps into the doorway and tries to hold it open while Yui tries to wedge a hammer into the grove. Both fail and as Tara realizes there is no way she can hold the door, leaps through nearly knocking over Utazó.

The door closes with a clunk. From somewhere in the room, a hiss can be heard.

Everyone (Except Tara and Utazó): Something you have never experienced before, your ear pops. You start to feel cramps in your stomach and your hands start to tingle, followed by your feet. Your breathing starts to get labored and shortened and your head starts throbbing in pain. The room around you starts to spin and the cramps in your stomach turn to nausea.

Soon, your vision starts to blur and darken and the whatever you were looking makes even less sense. The colors start to blend.

You look at your other party members and you are pretty certain that they are sharing this experience. You open your mouth to speak, but all that comes out is gibberish, you think; you can't really hear what you said as it is very muffled. You ask yourself what brought you here, but you are having trouble remembering where here even is.

Vult has seen his ups and downs on these panels: 2 XP for tripping up on the panel and putting most of the party at risk. (Don't hate on Vult... any of you could have done that too)

The "attack" inside the room has not changed... it is a level 4(12) defense (if you spend effort, it is a level 3(9). If you succeeded, you are still taking damage, 1 point to each pool. If you failed, you take 2 points from each pool.

Tara and Utazó: Watch through the window as their friends struggle to keep standing. They are acting like they had too much ale. You are not sure what is affecting them. From behind them, a small beeping and clicking can be heard.

Khoren and Yui: Yui falls to her knees. She is sucking air... squeezing her eyes and trying to keep focus. Khoren turns to the portal. He is looking for some thing .... maybe a way out. He starts to fumble forward, towards the portal and then drops to one knee.

Darazen and Vult: Working together, Darazen and Vult find the right combination in their books and knowledge of ancient Numenera. Darazen does his best to focus his mind, his memory. The panel's dial was set about three quarters of the way. Vult seeing symbols in both books puts it together, A K M O S T H E B E .... no, A T M O S P H E R E. He sees a warning, "Do not to climb too high in the mountains where the air gets thin or suffer from lightheadedness and nausea. Do not descend too fast or suffer from cramps, bleeding and eternal sleep." As Darazen reaches for the panel, Vult grabs at it. "Slowly". Darazen gets it and slowly slides his finger from left to right, to the position he remembers.

It will take two minutes to "re-pressurize". Those inside the room will take one more point of damage from each pool as the air refills the room.
Tara and Utazó: What are you doing outside the room?

Khoren and Yui: It takes a minute to get your head and strength back. What are you doing for the next minute?

Darazen and Vult: You both know you must step up the gauge slowly. Between "steps", you have the chance to study the other sub-panels if you want.

Ooc: in case anyone is wondering, our favorite GM is sick at the moment, hence the silence. Hang on in there, he'll be back soon.
Mar 14, 2015 2:45 pm
Sorry for the delay. I hate being sick and normally, even with cold medicine and all, I can draw on a little focus. That was not the case. This thing knocked me down, stole my lunch money and left me in such a haze. I am back now and appreciate your patience.

The "attack" inside the room has lessened... it is a level 4(12) defense (if you spend effort, it is a level 3(9). If you succeeded, you are still taking damage, 0 point to each pool. If you failed, you take 1 points from each pool.

Tara and Utazó: Not able to watch any longer, knowing they have to help their friends, Tara and Utazó set out to do something. Utazó searchs the door for a hand hold, an edge, something that she can use to pry the door open and finds nothing. Tara looks around and sees two panels on this side of the door. With Utazó blocking the right panel, she starts punching things one the left one..."Surely something has to help my friends in there." She starts funbling on the orange subpanel, pressing it, she hears a buzz and nothing happens. In desperation, she hits it a few more times and finally hears a beep, the arrow rotates and a single symbol appears next to it, changing as a slight tick is heard.

Khoren and Yui: Yui curled up in a fetal position. She is sucking air, but it is coming easier now. Khoren breathing still labored but getting better, finds the strenght to stand. He makes is way to the door to check on Tara and Utazó and assure them they are doing okay. He sees them frantically working to get the door open.

Darazen and Vult: Both Darazen and Vult feeling frustrated at this panel try to focus on another subsection while bringing up the air pressure slowly. They focus on the next subpanel, but the last attack and preventing anyone from having lasting injuries seems to be interupting their focus.

It will take one more minute to "re-pressurize".
Tara and Utazó: What are you doing outside the room?

Khoren and Yui: What are you doing for the next minute?

Darazen and Vult: Stepping up the gauge, what else are you focusing on?

The "attack" got everyone inside the room. Everyone inside takes 1 point from each pool.

Tara: Seeing her friends sufffering and not sure what she pressed, Tara moves over to the other (right) panel to check if the changing symbol is on that one. It is. It still looks like gibberish to her, but she knows she has to do something. She reaches for the purple panel when....

Utazó: Stepping over to watch Tara, "Hey Tara....maybe if you press THAT one!" and she reaches in towards the panel, bumping Tara's hand.

Tara: .... Tara's hand gets bumped and she hits the yellow sub-panel. The window panel in the center of the door goes suddenly dark.

FYI! They rolled a 2 and a 1 AND they have NO Numenera training. So, I gave Tara HALF of her first action interrupted by Utazó and let her finish the second half.

Khoren: In a raspy voice, Khoren attempts to help... "Maybe, if that one controls air, that other one controls light or wind or maybe it makes it rain."

Yui: Yui gets up and steps over the the group. Books spread out and the panel glowing, she points down to Orange sub-panel. "Why is that symbol next to the arrow in the circle changing?"

Darazen: Thinking to himself~Maybe Khoren is onto something. Maybe this does help control the enviro.... ~Figuring out that the first subpanel (blue) seems to control the air, Darazen focuses on the second (purple) subpanel. Using his books and training, the symbols start to make more sense. He slides the dial a LITTLE to the left and notices he feels a little lighter, sliding it to the right he feels a little heavier. He puts it back to the original setting and feels normal.

Vult: While the air is returning, the change in the air pressure has given Vult the hiccups ~~You rolled the one... I could have made it worse~~ and makes it hard to concentrate. One hicup was so hard, you fumbled your book, almost dropping it and definately losing your place.
Inside the room:
From Darazen's purple attempt: All those inside the room will notice a slight shift in weight... speed defense level 2 for everyone but Darazen who is expecting something, level 1 for him. If you succeed, nothing happens. If you fail, you are nauseated for 1 minute.

The lights in the room suddenly go out! You are plunged into total darkness. The glow from the panels and a slight glow from the frame are your only lights sources.

**click** **click** **hhhissssssssss**

The door starts to slide open and light from the hall floods the room.

Outside the room:
ooc: I am seeing two of the three stooges out here trying to read a physics manual.

The Orange panel's symbol stops and the panel seems to blink for a second.

**click** **click** **hhhissssssssss**

The door starts to slide open and light from the hall floods into a dark room.

"Whoa... sorry about that!" Darazen apologises as the gravity in the room adjusts slightly. "I should have warned you, but I thought that would happen." The effect was a little bit like a hump on a rollercoaster; not entirely unpleasant. The absence of air had taken even more out of him, and he was feeling considerably weakened. "I don't know about the three of you, but I'm going to need to rest for a long time after this. I've had the stuffing taken out of me. But first I need to work this out so I can sleep peacefully."

He tried to telepathically communicate with whoever turned the lights out... So, things are beginning to make sense. Blue: Air; Purple: Gravity; Yellow: Lights. "I'm going to see if I can work out the orange..."

**Darazen? Hey! Glad to hear from you guys! We're not exactly sure. We got the panels to spin the arrow and had a changing character on both pads.. countdown?! and we also accidentally hit the yellow button. We're not sure exactly which opened the door and which turned off the lights.. But now that the door is open I'm not messing with it!!**

"What in the Numenera happened to you guys?! You were stumbling around and looked like you were drunk! Utazo and I were able to get the doors open.. sorry about the lights.. She's guarding the hallway now.." Tara assists in helping our companions from the room into the hallway.

"Well, Tara, we had a little mishap, and Vult turned off the air. It's hard to breathe without any air." He gives a sidelong look at Vult. "So now we are all together, please be patient and let me work out how this panel works. I think I am beginning to understand it."

Pausing for a second he adds, "I love an intellectual challenge, but if we can sort this panel out I think we need to lock down and rest before proceeding. Vult has taken the wind out of my sails... pun intended."
Mar 17, 2015 8:55 pm
"You're not the only one." Vult wheezes.
Mar 17, 2015 11:44 pm
"Well, if you give chimps long enough, they'll figure out anything." Yui wheezes hard, grumpy at the near death experience. "I agree with Darazen, a siesta would be pretty great."
Mar 18, 2015 1:48 am
Tara nods, "Very well, I'll be in the hallway while you mess around with those panels... Just in case."
Mar 18, 2015 2:34 am
"Careful Yui. Don't critcize the surgeon when he has the knife in his hands. I might accidentally press the blue panel again. Ho hum." He winks at Yui.
Mar 18, 2015 4:35 am
"Just make sure when your done experimenting that dunderheads like me know what's what.. In case we get separated again. Would hate to press a button and accidentally kill you all.. or worse.." Tara remarks from the hallway to no one in particular.
Mar 18, 2015 2:53 pm
With the door open and the light restored, most of the party thinks it would be a good time to rest. Darazen sits and tries to compare and consolidate notes. Both he and Vult are extremely tired, but feel they should work this out before they rest and while it is still fresh in their minds.

Darazen says he is positive that one panel (left) controls the enviroment inside and and the other (right side) controls the outside. It controls the air, the light, makes things lighter and heavier, and they can lock the doors. Of course, if someone can come along from the other side and undo what you did, like unlocking the door, it is pretty useless.

Vult explains that the red/orange key panel is a locking mechanism. With it locked, secured, or armed (he was not too sure which translation fit, but these make the most sense), no one on the other side can make changes. And, it accepts new IDs and passwords. Now that he knows the sequence, he can set up other IDs if needed.

Utazó and Tara: Utazó hears something again down the hall, a **click click beep click click beep**. She pulls herself together, whispers to Tara for her to follow and makes her away to the T. Peaking around the corner to the left, the hall ends 60 ft down in a door with the panel/window dark.

A little louder now: **beep click click beep click beep click **

It is coming from the right. Turning and looking in that direction, the hall continues another 60 ft and ends in a door to another room. The panels on each side are lit and a sign above the door says "Rememdium". The sounds seem to be coming from the sign. It flickers.
Mar 18, 2015 4:46 pm
Feeling accomplished, Darazen nods to Vult and says, "We can lock the door and rest now."
Then he notices that Utazo and Tara have head off down the corridor. "Oh crap."

Attempting to be stealthy, Darazen moves a few feet up the corridor to be within telepathic range of the two girls, and pleads, ***Please come back and rest. We don't want to set off another chain reaction.***

Hearing Darazen's voice in her mind stuns Utazó for a bit. "What kind of freak thing is... son of an abhuman... can he hear what I'm thinking..." Shaking her head and stifling her urge to investigate further, Utazó takes one last longing look at the flickering sign before turning back to the room where the others are waiting. "I'm going to join the others for a bit, Tara. May not hurt to get a little rest before continuing on."

As she enters the room Utazó gives Darazen an awkward look.

Ok, Utazó and everyone returns to the room. Vult demonstrates how the user panel works and locks the door with everyone inside. You all are tired, hurt and hungry. After finding another smaller sub-panel in the main panel, he determined this one was to cover the portal. It did not turn it off, but it did put some sort of shield around it. No one is going in, or coming through it.

You need a good nights rest and it definitely looks like night outside. With the door secured, Darazen turns does the lights so it is not so bright. Even if you have bed-rolls, it is still going to be a cold, hard night on a metal floor.

Let me know how watches are broken down and who is on which watch. Is there anything else you want to do before your ten hour rest?
Mar 19, 2015 1:34 am
Utazó, who is in fairly good shape, offers to take the first watch.
Mar 19, 2015 4:24 am
"I could really use the rest, but I guess I'll be on watch after Utazo. Sleep tight."

With that, Yui unrolls her bedroll and balls up her cloak to use as a pillow, laying her sword next to it. Within seconds, a symphony of snoring fills the room.

Overnite results:

First Shift: Peaceful

Second Shift: The lighting in the room rose and fell slightly and a small hum was heard. From outside the windows, a few flashes of light were seen. Getting up to investigate, you see a small cloud of dust descending over a portion of the valley. Suddenly, the hum returns and an arch of light flashes from the ridge. It ends in another small flash and forms another cloud of dust. As your eyes adjust, see small rocks in the night sky, falling. Some tumble and crash into the landscape while some tumble towards the "town". The former hit the surface and dust rises leaving small pot-marks while those over the "town" are hit by these beams of light. It appears the Numenera is taking care of itself. You decide it is nothing to worry about and move back to your watch position against the wall with a good line of vision of the door and the portal. ~What a strange place.~

Third Shift: Peaceful. You think you hear a few clicks and pings, but the noises are faint and it could just be your imagination.

If after you awaken and take your "10 hr" recovery and are still down in your pools, refer to the Restore Rolls post.

GM Notes: Usually, the GM announces tallies, but that is okay Darazen. :) After a beat down for the past few days, you are all pretty won out. You all decide to stay and rest another day, secured in the room.

You are getting hungry, yes. There was no food recovered from the mudmen. The only one with packs, if memory serves, was Tara and Vult. They had enough rations (think MREs) for them for three days (nine packs in each pack). It is up to them if they wish to share.

Water will soon be a problem too. You were able to secure some from the pools in the caverns, but after two days you are getting low.

Worse is there is no facility in this room (and no privy or WC either).... what you do eat and drink has to go somewhere. (You never see facilities or such in cinema castles, do you?)

By the end of the second day, your pools are completely restored (no more rolls needed).
Restoration does not (always) mean sleeping. It is resting. You can do this sitting down, laying down, whatever. You can relax and roll die or play cards. You can prepare food and eat. You can study your Numenera books. You can recover while sitting watch even (except the 10 hr).

I need to know what you are doing (someone did mention cards.... would you care to elaborate?)

I also need perception rolls.

After 36 hours of boredom (we had cards for the first while until someone lost a hand and chucked them through the portal), Khoren is ready to climb through the window/screens. He has spent the time mostly watching the view outside, memorizing the layout and looking for any movement or other changes, like lights going on or off.

Khoren has also cleaned absolutely everything that doesn't flee using his hedge magic, and spent time levitating small objects around the room.

Lastly, while he is trying to rest, he will handle his new sword, swinging it lightly and just carrying it in either hand, getting used to the weight without exerting himself.

After exerting herself lightly, she eats some food she brought (she doesn't have much though) and then sleeps to kill the time.
She then dances the dance of blades with the others again (if they want) until conceding to the monotony.

"Can we please go? Or wait, can I go through the portal and get us some water? Anything but this."

When I was little I would beg him to let me come with him on his trips."

Trying to imitate her father's voice, "The Wyr is no place for a little girl, Zó!"

"Eventually when I turned 15 or 16, father relented and started taking me along with him and his coworkers on their 'fishing' trips." Realizing the weird stress she put on the word 'fishing' she quickly moves on. "So I've spent a lot of time out doors, tracking, scouting, and the like. Much more comfortable in the wild than in a place like this. Also managed to pick up a few tricks from a couple of his coworkers."

Utazó continues to carve into the wall, fascinated with the healing properties it continues to show, "Anyway, when Phyrel's was looking for a scout a few years back I was a shoe-in for the job. My father's friends' recommendations were taken very seriously by Mr. Phyrel..."

Turning to Darazen, "And what about you?"

Darazen listens to Utazo's story with interest but is slightly taken aback when she turns the question back on him. "Oh, you want my story?" ~darn it~ "Well, I guess it's only fair." He smiles enigmatically and says, "Well, Zo... I can call you Zo can I? I noticed your father called you that... I think it suits you." He doesn't actually pause for an answer. "My life was certainly different to yours. I didn't spend much time outdoors, rather many hours studying at Asaranti University in Charmonde, the capital City of Navarene. You know that right? Charmonde is the 2nd largest city..." He pauses, "Oh, I'm sorry... I didn't mean to lecture, bad habit you know... All those years of studying and teaching." He laughs nervously.

"My father is one of the greatest academics ever. I was sucked into his world, but I couldn't live up to his expectations, so..." He sighs. "So I left home. "Hey, Darazen. When did you start addressing all of us? That was awfully sweet, though." Yui reaches way over and pulls the book out of Darazen's hand.

"Know-how. Knowledge. Power. All held in these hallowed pages, privy to only those who were taught to read. It's sick how so many people hide in these things, going to a different world to run away from reality."

Didn't your mother ever teach you that?"

Gently closing the book, in an almost reverent way, Darazen looks up at Yui and asks, "You seem frustrated. Perhaps you would like to chat to pass the time? How did =you= end up on this ill fated adventure, Yui?"

"Well, I grew up at a small monastery to the East of here, well off the beaten path so you shant have heard of it.." Tara begins.. "The monks traded with small nearby communities and together we had a sort of loose friendship. Nobody really wanted anyone 'ruling over them', so we were all free spirits of a sorts. Since the monks were trained in fighting, they helped the other villages when trouble arose in our area of the Steadfast. Book learning was never one of my strengths, I found the physical activities much more to my liking.. So I learned their fighting techniques growing up. Helping being a protector to those other small villages helped me understand my being in the universe.. my place."
Tara takes a moment to let that sink in and then says "As for my being a well-be-doer... One thing the monks used to always tell me was 'Be part of the solution, not the problem.' and I find that to be very true. I try to live my life by that moniker. I grew up with that ideal, protecting the small communities and being given assistance by them. By not being cruel but showing compassion, and sometimes just giving a little hope, I am a part of that solution. I've seen needless suffering inflicted upon others.. I find it unnerving."
Tara gets a little thoughtful and after a small pause, "A little girl in one of the villages once told me she thought little acts of kindness were alive and always wanting to reproduce.." Tara smiles a bit at that.. "Perhaps one day we'll see if she is right. Until then, it certainly won't harm me to be kind to others.. and if someone sees me as weak for that and tries to fight me or forcefully take advantage.. well, they'll be in for quite a surprise, won't they." Tara smirks.

"How about yourself Yui?"

BTW, Tara will be more than happy to lightly spar with you or anyone else who wants it.

Rest results: Remember, some of this is player knowledge and not always known by the character.

Khoren: After two days stuck in this white room, Khoren is antsey to move on. The cards, thrown at the portal bounce off the shield that now surrounds it. The shield sparkles as it is hit.

Over the day, Khoren notices that the shield has sparked a few times, even though nothing seemed to be touching it.

Khoren does notice his hedge magic here seemed to work better and faster. Cleaning an area (for whatever reason) was almost instant. For example, when he started cleaning a cypher, he would start from the top and work his way down, almost with a swipe. He would get half down and noticed that the bottom was clean. After a few attempts, it appeared when he started from the top or the left, something else started from the bottom or right. And even though he knew how not to expend energy on it (had an edge), it was even easier for him.

At one point, he noticed Utazó carving into the walls with her dagger. He was appauled that she would resort to graffitti and was getting ready to use his enhanced skill to repair the damage when he saw the scratches repair themselves. He poitned to Utazó and she nodded that she already knew it. She even used her dagger to produce a drop of blood and smear it on the wall only to see it disappear.

Finally, he stands up and moves to a corner. He draws the commanders sword and starts testing its balance, easy of use and finds it is lighter and seems to work well in both hands. Yui steps up and offers to spar a little. Yui finds it harder to defend against the attacks and a few slip through. The blade is sharp and finds flesh a few times. The first time, Khoren offers an apology and

Yui shrugs it off, "Zigged when I should have zagged". The next few times, the blade finds its mark. Khoren stops, "This is a fine blade".

Benefit: Choose a sword fighting skill and add it to your character sheet as trained. Yui, while getting hit, added to your training. If you are trained, you are now specialized.
Yui: Yui is getting bored and after some time, steps up to Khoren who is swigning the commanders sword and asks to practice sparing. Yui draws her Wakizashi. Khoren and Yui dance around for a few moments before he sees an opening and makes contact. The sword is sharp and even though Yui could tell Khoren was holding his attack, it still drew blood. "Hey! Careful! I am on your side".

Setting up again, they thurst and parry each other when Khoren draw more blood. Khoren apologizes and Yui replaies, "If THAT is how you want to play" and takes a defensive stance. She deflects some very good hits, but Khoren finds a small hole and the blade sings past and draws more blood. Yui stops, (3 hits total, for 6 dmg to Yui - It will heal by the end of your rest period)

Having enough fighting, Yui bows to Khoren and steps over to Tara. She sits down, not waiting for permission and starts talking. She asks Tara to share her past. Yui suggest to Darazen who has his head in his books that it might be a good idea to go back through the portal to get water. It appears to Yui that she is being ignored and she reaches out and takes Darazens book to get his attention.

Benefit: Choose a social skill and add it to your character sheet as trained. If you are trained, you are now specialized.
Utazó : Utazó thinks back to her first trip through the portal. In her mind, she sees the hallway and it looks different. The outside looks similar, but she did not take a great deal of time to study it. Still, there are minor things and she is certain this is a different room that the first one.

Her thoughts are interupted when she hears Darazen ask about her past. She puts her thoughts aside. She does not like to talk about herself, but having little else to do, she shares what she wants. She pauses for a moment and abscent-mindedly carves a pattern into the wall that her father taught her. Just as she finishes it, it starts to disappear. "Anyway, when Phyrel's was looking for a scout a few years back I was a shoe-in for the job. My father's friends' recommendations were taken very seriously by Mr. Phyrel..."

Benefit: Choose (or create thru PMs with the GM) a skill in symbology and add it to your character sheet as trained. If you are trained, you are now specialized.
Darazen : Asking Utazó about her past, he listens intently. He finds her story fascinating. She sees her using her dagger to carve into the wall, and notices it seems to disappear or fill in after a few moments. When she pauses, his atention is drawn to her face as she seems to stare into the distance. He wonders what is going through her mind. The scraping of her dagger draws his eyes and he sees a symbol formed on the wall byt the tip of her dagger. Her hand stops and as she continues, the symbol fades.

He looks up and she is focused on him now. She asked something and he can tell she is expecting a response. "What was it? What did she... she must have asked me to reciprocate." He looks past her to keep from getting distracted and answers her, telling how he got here and how he is now questioning his decision and how he feels some fear for his own safety.

Benefit: Choose a history skill, specifying a "history in ...." and add it to your character sheet as trained. If you are trained, you are now specialized.
Tara: Tara answers Yui's query and feels herself recenter. She asks Yui how she came to be here and invites her to join her in a bit of hand to hand sparring. Tara moves to a space in the room and starts to stretch and perform poses and she was taught. Yui comes over and says, "After the beating from Khoren, I am going to refrain from sparring." Instead, she starts to do her own posing and stretching. After an hour or so, you start sharing combat moves, defensive moves and general styles.

Benefit: Choose a hand to hand combat or a balancing skill (be specific) and add it to your character sheet as trained. If you are trained, you are now specialized.
Vult: Moves to a corner and covers himself in his cloak. Before long, a light snore can be heard, but only for a moment. The sound seems to change and it blends into the white noise of the room.

Benefit: Check your PM.
You all may continue to talk amongst yourselves. There is no clock or time piece in this room and the sun appears to move differently here, as does that blue/white moon.

Khoren and Yui do a little sparring, utnil Yui gets make because she feels Khoren was not pulling his punches. Several of you shared your histories and others made some observations.

After what you feeling is two days, you are all rested and "restored". Utazó tells the party that she found another room and it appeared to be clear when she was there, but Darazen called her back. It had a panel whose light was flickering above the door. It read "Rememdium", or something like that.

Looking through the door panel, the hall looks clear. Yui reminds Darazen and the rest of the party that they are low on water and food stuffs.

Where do you want to go now?
Mar 22, 2015 8:17 pm
After the sparring match, when Yui begins talking to others, Khoren begins to add in his own story, but the words catch in his mouth. Instead, he watches the portal, and the windows, but listens jealously to their growing comradery. He was never good at that, talking easily with strangers. Back in Bhoreg, the gang accepted him, and as he grew to know them, he began to speak more openly with them. They thought that he was shy, but it was really that he didn't have any idea what to say to them until he knew them well enough. As he grew into adulthood, they began including him in all manner of hi-jinks, and soon he found an outlet for his unspent words. A vicious cruelty emerged, one that felt natural and gained him immediate acceptance with their games of one-upmanship.

But deep inside, he felt a stronger urge, an urge to assist and accomplish rather than to bully and destroy. He left one night, and joined Phyrell, who seemed to understand his need to escape a bad lifestyle. As a teamster, hard work and cooperation erased the seemed to erase the path down that terrible road to the life of thug. At least he had thought so. But during the sparring, as Yui pressed her hands to side, blood creeping down, a horrific thought strangled his attention. Was that cruelty gone? Or merely repressed.

Words choke in his throat, unspoken.
When the time comes to exit the room, Khoren is a bit more at east with himself. Still, a terrible thirst gnaws at his throat and he knows that without refreshment, they will soon become weakened and may not survive the next encounter with poisoned air. He says "Rememdium..." and then coughs slightly, holding back the rest of his thought.

Tara will inform everyone that she's managed to evolved her combat fighting style to find a way to take Advantage of an opponent that has been attacked previously on the same turn that she is attacking, whether that attack hit or not, thus making it easier for her to hit them. This of course is very useful against more formidable opponents. When able to do so, she will try to use this advantage herself of course, but sometimes she can't turn her back on a more formidable opponent and just wanted to let everyone know that the distraction can be used to her advantage whether they hit or not... it could pose some tactical strategic advantage.
(So, if someone attacks an opponent I'm attacking before I do (because they have a higher initiative), that puts the creature at -1 step for me to hit it. So a lvl (5) monster (5)x3=15 to hit, turns into a (5-1)x3=4x3=12 to hit now before I even apply effort or weapon training.)
(OOC: I don't remember if I mentioned this or not to everyone.. I thought I had but couldn't find where I posted it so figured I might as well restate it since we're all trapped in a room for a full day with nothing else to do.. she'd have plenty of time to explain it to everyone)
Mar 23, 2015 11:11 am
After a while Darazen stands up and stretches. Noticing that over the period of the day there is quite a mess immediately around him, despite Khoren's best efforts to keep the room clean. He starts to pack his personal effects away in his back pack, making sure his books are easily accessible. He re-reads some of the notes he's written while resting, using his incredible memory to accurately record the last few days, including some of the conversations of particular importance, friends and foes alike. Particular emphasis is paid to the unusual experiences, including rumors, cyphers, and his telepathic experiences. Satisfied it is an accurate record, and feeling privately proud of himself, he packs his book.

He looks towards Utazo and communicates telepathically with her. (Ooc: see PM)

Brushing his robes down, he feels ready to move on. Darazen wasn't much of an eater, and he had managed to keep his mind stimulated for the last few hours, but now the hunger pangs suddenly kick in.

"Well everyone, it's been a pleasure sharing your company with me, but I don't know about you, but I'm starving. Shall we find some food?"
Mar 23, 2015 11:28 am
"You can have some of my food." Vult offers. "Is anyone else hungry?"

He tone grows low, inquisitive, "What do the rest of you know about the Assassin's Heart? Is it a telepathic device?"
Mar 23, 2015 12:50 pm
Darazen eagerly grabs some food from Vult and starts to ravenously eat. "I was hungrier than I thought. I get so embroiled in my studies I forget to eat sometimes!"

Recognising Vult's question, Darazen nods. "I was just reading my notes, and there was a snippet of information I found from one of the commanders we killed. I'll read it to you." Darazen reaches back into his pack and retrieves his note book he'd only just stowed away. Opening the book and finding the correct page, he glances up at Vult's impassive face and briefly wonders whether the guy has emotions, and whether this information will excite him or not. After all, the somewhat mechanical being had not shared much information about himself in the last few hours, and the first time he spoke was all business, much like a computer.

Making sure the food was completely swallowed, and his mouth is clear, Darazen reads aloud to the whole group, taking on the voice of one lecturing in a large impersonal room. "The Commander said to me... "I don't know where the heart is, or even what it looks like. The thing is supposed to be this amazing artifact which lets the wearer see through the heart of anyone close to them, knowing exactly what they are doing and what they are feeling. It is supposed to protect the wearer from mental attacks of any type." So it does sound like some sort of telepathic device."

The food tastes better than you'd expect for field rations (OOC: Vult uses Hedge Magic to season them).

Vult listens, his hand absent-mindedly disolving and absorbing his ration. When he replies, his voice is a mix of awe and trepidation, "I had a dream. That was mentioned in the journal in the dream -- device # 42. Does their queen have pure white skin and red hair?"
Mar 23, 2015 2:27 pm
Darazen nods. "I have seen the Queen. She has skin of alabaster white, and red hair, and she is extremely beautiful, almost mesmerisingly so. Let me check my notes." He flips a few pages back in his book. "Here it is... Let me read it to you. This is quite a long passage, so bear with me..."

"My link to the command is strong still for the next few seconds. He is scared and feeling very alone and betrayed. While he was a tough guy, hard on his men, it was to teach them how to survive. Now he feels like he let them down. I get flashes of memories, him growing up too soon, seeing his mother murdered and his father blamed when he was only 7. The streets he grew up in, the shelters and homes he used, his pets (random small animals). I see him wandering farther and farther from town. Getting into trouble, and yet sometimes helping those in need.

Then, it goes dark. He feels movement, but cannot see anything. The caves... now he is lost. A room... a water curtain glows and hangs on the wall. It's wet (yet dry) and cold... and there is a room on the other side. Stepping through, he wanted to see what it was hiding. He is seeing swirling colors and hearing odd sounds, he steps out a moment later. It is night and he is outside. He feels a bit stronger. He looks to the sky and he sees a blue and white marble in the sky. A sound to his right and now he sees stars.

He wakes up in a camp, chained to others. He is called a cruit by others who seem to be in command. He is trained and soon bests his fellow cruits. He faced and beat many challenges and was given more and more freedom. Soon given the rank of LT, he is given his own cruits and soon he works them into shape to take on tasks.

On these tasks, he is given an artifact, told how to use it and what it takes to repair it. He is told that once in GiaPrim, to cover themselves with mud as it absorbs the weapons energies. He does what he is told and he achieves each task put before him.

He is 19 now, and earned the rank of 4LT. He is summoned to the central. He is joined by 5 other 4LTs in the outer room, 2 women and 3 men. Commanders and support people circle around them, removing weapons and armor. "You won't need those", they were told and stripped down to their breeches.

The center door opens and they are lead to the door. Inside, a feast has been brought. "Come in", a pleasant voice says, "Sit with me and eat." He's been given audience with the queen. He and the others step through and the door closes and seals. From behind a synth curtain, the most beautiful woman he has ever seen steps through. She is tall, maybe 6'4" with long red hair and deep green eyes. Her skin is alabaster white and her breasts firm with rose colored nipples. Catching himself staring, he drops his eyes. She does not seem to notice, or care. She moves to the head of the table and offers seats to him and the others.

The feast is wonderful, far better than he has ever eaten before. But unlike a couple of his fellow LTs, he knows not to over eat; you never know what the next task may be.

Two of the LTs gorge themselves with food and drink and pass out. The queen, displeased by this, has them removed. She stands and out of reflex and respect, he stands and lowers his head. She walks back to the curtain and beckons the rest of you to follow. The shape of her behind is perfect and there is not a blemish on her skin.

She pulls back the curtain and reveals a large cushions bed. "I have a 'Commander' rank, for the one who can keep up with me." She was avaricious when it came to her pleasure within a couple of hours, two of the LTs had passed out. She left them where they were, occasionally prodding, licking and kissing them, hoping for more. After several more hours, he and the other LT were exhausted and yet she wanted more. As the other LT started parting her legs, her eyes started to quiver and her lips turned blue. She grasps her chest and collapses. As the queen rolled her off of her, she rolled on her back with a smile on her face.

"Commander", she whispered, "Care for another?"

Hours pass and she was resting her head on his arm. "Commander?"

He shuddered. "Relax, Commander, I was just going to ask if you wanted breakfast."

My link with the commander breaks and for all the beating he took, he too died with a smile on his face."

Looking up, Darazen smirks with embarrassment. "You can see why I didn't share this with you guys. It's a bit like soft porn."
Mar 23, 2015 9:45 pm
Utazó approaches Vult and thanks him as she grabs a small portion of food. Sitting cross legged on the ground she alternates between taking small bites of food and carving random symbols into the floor just to watch them fade away. As Darazen begins to read his notes she starts to listen intently, eyes wide as she slowly chews her food. "Whoa! Good notes!"

"You know, it really says something when she can't restrain her appetites enough to keep the people under her alive." Vult says, disapproving.
Mar 24, 2015 2:10 pm
"But Vult, you asked me to confirm her identity. Do you have information to share with us?"
Mar 25, 2015 2:54 pm
"Not much else, I'm afraid. This place used to be a paradise of some kind, if my dream was correct." His voice falls into a solemn tone.
Mar 25, 2015 3:31 pm
So, where is the party going? Into the structure, or back through the portal?
Mar 25, 2015 4:04 pm
Darazen shrugs at Vult's anticlimactic response. "Fair enough."

"Well, I think we've spent long enough contemplating our navels, let's get moving..."

He approaches the locked door and types in the code to unlock it. "Anyone fancy going first?"
Mar 25, 2015 7:38 pm
"I'll go first." Tara says and steps forward. "Someone should cover our rear just in case".
Mar 25, 2015 10:50 pm
"I'll take rear guard. You'll want to go right when you get to the 'T', that's where the weird sign was."

Utazó will wait by the door as the other's pass. "Think you can lock this thing up behind us, Darazen?"
Mar 26, 2015 12:10 am
"And let us all know what the code is to get in.. Just in case." Tara shrugs. "Just being practical.. better to know in an emergency."
Mar 26, 2015 12:26 am
"That's a good idea Zo, I mean Zoey, no, Utazo. It's a really good idea. Locking the door may prevent anyone following us through the portal." Darazen waits for everyone to pass through the door before locking it. As each person passes by he tells them the password. "Osred".
Mar 26, 2015 12:47 am
Vult draws his bow with a fluid action. "I'd be best near the front."
Mar 26, 2015 1:45 am
Utazó resists shooting Darazen a glare. "Can't even pronounce 'Utazó' correctly, always screwing up the last syllable. 'UtaZO'? What the hell is an UtaZO?"

"It's Zó, not Zo! And unless you're my father it starts with an Uta. Utazó, not Utazo, Utazó", she answers before realizing that the only way Darazen would know she was upset was that he was reading her mind.

***Stay out of my head or the next time you call me 'Zo' it will be pronounced incorrectly through the gurgle of your own blood!***
Mar 26, 2015 3:33 am
Darazen's dark visage turns a little whiter when he "hears" the fatal threat. ~This woman has issues!~ ***OK, I'll call you Utazó in future.*** Realizing he and Utazó are the last to leave the room, he feels a little vulnerable, and hastily types in the passcode before moving rapidly away from her. As a passing thought as he walks away he adds, ***Your father must have been a fine man. ***
Mar 26, 2015 5:24 pm
Tara proceeds down the hallway to the intersection and glances both ways to be cautious.. (Assuming she sees nothing out of the ordinary) she turns right and proceeds to the doorway where we heard the noises.. She'll glance through the window while seeing if she can hear any noises through the door. She'll position herself so Vult can get access to the panel at the side of the door.

As Tara approaches the corner, she looks in both directions. The hall is empty. Looking right, Tara confirms there is a room with a sign above the door says "Rememdium". The door is clicking, not quite closed. Tara pushes on the door and it opens. Inside, the room is lit. The room is about 120 ft by 120 ft. There is another door, closed, on the east (left) side. Shelves and panels line the walls. Four beds are attached to the south wall with panels over each. Desks and chairs are scattered throughout as are several beds. In the center is a 10 ft wide square "column" floor to ceiling with panels. There does not appear to be anything moving.

Tara reports to there are no dangers and moves in, encouraging the rest to do so.

As Utazó leads on the rear guard. She keeps her eye on the door. The rest of the party turns to the right, following Tara. As Utazó takes a step to the right, ONLY she sees the door shimmer and a ghostly figure step through the door, followed by another and another. They seem to be walking in step and wearing white jump suit type uniforms. None seem to wearing weapons and none seem to see her.

(Intellect Roll: 1) Utazó freezes. The figures walk up to the intersection and turn left. They move towards the far door. The door shimmers and the figures walk through.
Mar 27, 2015 7:18 pm
A stunned Utazó tries to call out but is unable to make a sound. "WHAT THE HELL!" she screams internally as the figures approach and move past her as if she didn't exist. She watches in fear as the last figure walks through the opposite door.

*** DARAZEN!!!! ***
Mar 27, 2015 8:24 pm
***Are you sure you are pronouncing that right?*** he responds in a huff.
Mar 27, 2015 10:04 pm
*** What the hell were those things? ***
Mar 27, 2015 11:42 pm
Something in Utazo's tone makes Darazen spin around, alert to potential danger, but the sight that meets his eyes astounds him. He sees Utazo alone in the corridor. ***Are you messing with me? I told you I am sorry for mispronouncing your name!***
Mar 28, 2015 3:10 am
*** I forgive you already, just get the hell over here ***

Utazó recovering a bit more from what she saw turns to Darazen. "Three figures. Walked right by me. Went through that door", she uses her sword to point to the opposite door. Catching her breath a bit she says, "It's like they either didn't know or didn't care that I was here.

"No one else saw anything???"

Sympathetically Sarazen listens to Utazo's explanation. The others have already moved on, and he nods as he looks towards the door she is pointing at. "I'm sorry, I am sure you saw something, but I didn't see it." ~she seems pretty shaken up. She must have seen something.~ "We are in a strange place. Maybe things are different here?"

Mar 28, 2015 4:50 pm
Whirling about, Vult levels his bow, searching for foes. Finding none, he lowers the weapon. "Uta...zo" Vult stumbles over the name. "Can you describe the figures in greater detail? They could be projections, a recording of sorts. Did they look anything like this:"

Vult will describe some of the men and women from his dream, including the clothes they wore.

"They were dressed in white, almost like plain white uniforms, walked right by me in perfect unison. Three of them, they all appeared to be male, but I'm not sure. It's almost like they weren't even there, kind of transparent looking", Utazó stammers as she recalls what she had seen.

She quickly shakes her head and rubs her eyes. "I think you're right, Darazen, things must just be different here", she says, trying to convince herself she just wasn't seeing things. "If no one else saw anything or has any ideas then I suggest we just move on then."

ooc: I DO try to wait for everyone, but have skipped in the past. I tend to wait more if there is combat (as we are in rounds) or when there is blatant actions that one or more are doing int the group. This past weekend had me swamped though and work is picking up some.

Utazó is clearly shaken at what she saw.... three ghost like apparitions walking towards her and then turning and walking away like they never saw her. More disturbing to her was that no one else saw them.

Darazen offers some comfort and tries to understand what just happened (int check).

Vult listens as Utazó recounts the description of the trio, wondering if they were similar to that of the men he saw in his dream. (int check)

Khoren steps into the room and sees shelves and panels on the walls, beds pushed about and desks with notes, books, view tablets and such. (per check)

Tara walks directly over to the other door and pears through the window. She sees nothing but darkness. She waits for her eyes to adjust, but even the shadows are dark. She presses her hands and eyes to the panel and waits for her eyes to adjust. (perception check)

Utazó, still recovering from what she saw, works her way into the room where the others are searching.
Apr 2, 2015 11:01 pm
Darazen and Utazó walk back to the room, talking to each other. Darazen offers, "Perhaps what you saw were spirits, remnants of the past, of those who built this place. Not that I believe in spirits, but I do not know what else to tell you. I mean, they did not seem interested in you, or us."

Vult joins in the room. Looking around, he sees the beds and desks and the panels on the wall. He steps next to a desk next to Khoren who asks, "Rememdium? I think that sounds familiar, like stadium or something, but this is no stadium."

Vult, not thinking about it as he hears the word out loud, responds "Rememdium? Contains the root word 'Remedy' from a dead language I found scraps of."

Khoren nods, "Yes, that's what the guild at the Empty Sanctum called themselves, Remediers. Personally, I was always told to stay away from the Empty Sanctum, and I did. But one day while escorting a small caravan for the company, we were ambushed. I was hurt pretty bad and the sanctum was the closest place to find aid. I woke up in a room, stark white, kinda like these walls. And this man was standing over me, and he had a pendant with a symbol of a sword and two snakes twisted around it."

Khoren spots a paper on the desk and moves to pick it up, "The symbol looked similar to thi....", the paper crumples to dust in his hands and falls back to the desk.

As most of you search the room, you find many of the books and pages to be extremely fragile.

Tara finds herself looking deep into the darkness, almost getting herself lost in it. At the edge of her vision, she sees movement. It is not much and not approaching her at all. Just a slow movement, up and down.... up and down... almost.... hypnotic.

Not find the books and papers easy to search, the group looks elsewhere. Searching the devices is more fruitful. Between you, you find 9 cyphers (and most are actually labeled, though the labels are fragile too:

1) Lvl 6 - Intellect Enhancement
2) Lvl 3 - Knowledge Enhancement
3) Lvl 7 - Mood Patch
4) Lvl 6 - Rejuvenator
5) Lvl 4 - Antivenom
6) Lvl 8 - Speed Heal
7) Lvl 3 - Stim
8) Lvl 8 - Ear Worm
9) Lvl 5 - Telepathy Implant (Small metal box of 16)

Utazó looks over at one of the fancy beds and decides that a bit of a rest is in order. "I'm just going to lie down for a bit, feel free to divide up the goodies amongst yourselves." Laying back she closes her eyes, "Spirits? Nah! Something is going on here...."

Merlin says:
Darazen hones in on the Intellect Enhancement device. Using effort he tries to identify it.
Intellect Enhancement
Wearable: Adhesive patch that activates when slapped
Effect: Substance adds 1 to Intellect Edge for one hour.
Apr 3, 2015 2:34 am
~that could be useful~ Darazen thinks, pocketing the device. "What's next?" He picks up the Rejuvenator and examines that.

Khoren tries to ID the Speed Heal cypher.
Speed Heal
Level: 6(18) - Specialized brings it down two levels to a 4(12), if only you had had an asset (like a book)
Usable: Injector
Effect: ?? So close. You think it helps with a pool of some sort, healing it quickly, but just not sure how much or if it affects body, muscle or mind.

Rejuvenator
Level: 6(18) - Training lowers by one as does the book... tis a 4(12) .... just missed it. ;)
Internal: Pill, ingestible liquid
Effect: You are pretty sure this will restore some vitality to body or mind.... at least you think it will, it could do just as much harm.

This bed feels like a warm feather bed... if you knew what a feather bed felt like. I seems to conform to you and support you in all the right areas. You feel peaceful and calm. You close your eyes and ..... zzzzzzz.

**beep click click click beep**

The panel above the bed Utazó lies on comes to life. Symbols and numbers, a pulsing light, and arrows move up and down in rhythmic fashion. A smile forms on her face. She is dreaming.

Darazen says to anyone listening, "this can restore health, I think, but I'm not too sure."

He picks up the telepathy implant. "Hmmm, wonder what this is?"

Tara walks over to the bed that Utazó is lying on. She seems peaceful, at rest...her breathing steady and her color good. Her eye lids are twitching, like she is dreaming. The panel over the bed thrums with activity.

Darazen was right, here is the rest:

Effect: Substance restores a number of points equal to the cypher’s level to one random Pool. Roll percentile:
01–50 Might Pool
51–75 Speed Pool
76–00 Intellect Pool

Khoren will next attempt to ID the Ear Worm.
Earworm
Internal: A tiny worm covered in sharp hairs
Effect: The cypher activates when placed on someone’s face. The worm crawls up the side of the user’s face and enters his ear canal (or the closest thing to an ear canal the user has). It then embeds the bristles coating its body into the canal. For the next 28 hours, the user can understand any language he hears and has an asset for any task that involves listening.

When the effect ends, a fleshy moth flies out of his ear.

Speed Heal
Internal: Pill, ingestible liquid

Effect: At the end of each minute for the next hour, the user adds 1 point to his Might Pool, up to the Pool’s maximum. This is especially useful for someone who is taking frequent or long-term damage.

Tara moves over to the bed that Utazó is sleeping on.

Looking at the display, you see a lot of symbols and numbers. Some of it looks similar to what you saw on the panels, what Vult and Darazen showed you about the doors, but this is different. Every few seconds, the display slides and another set of symbols appear. After a few cycles, the panel displays the form of a person, with symbols over certain areas. For a few moments, the display seems to move out those symbols, zooming in on certain areas like the head, the arms, the body and more. Then the panel clears and starts over again.
Apr 6, 2015 12:01 pm
After identifying the items Darazen heads over to the bed occupied by Utazo (ooc: with an accent over the o).

"Stay there, Utazo, it seems to be some sort of medical device."

With that Darazen examines the display to try to determine how it works.

(ooc: well, in that case...)

Darazen smiles. "It is entirely possible. I'm struggling a bit with the meaning of some of these instruments. Wait a minute... maybe I can refer to some of the notes I made when working on the other panels. There may be some similarities."

Darazen refocusses his Numenera training, but this time with the aid of his notes...

Darazen leans over the panel, looks at an over turned table and sits it upright next to the bed. He pulls out his Numenera books and opens them on the table and starts looking at the display. After about 20 minutes of going back and forth and viewing the panels as they changed, taking notes and consulting his books all the while watching over Utazó, he stands up.

"Pregnant? I think not. There is only one thing pulsing on the screen that says "electrocardiograph" and that appears to be her heart. The other screens seem to show other medical conditions and readouts. I am not doctor, though and some of these terms are not in my books."

"ZZZZzzzzz.....snort......zzzzZZZZ", can be heard from Utazó.

"Apparently though, this bed checks the wellness of the person on it. It also looks like it can do some healing on the person too. It can make the person go to sleep, which I suppose is better than having them squirm and thrash in pain."

Looking at Tara, "So, do you remember the scar from the slicer beetle on her arm? I mean, we healed the wound, but the mark was still there. Now, it is gone....

"ZZZZzzzzz.....snort......zzzzZZZZ"

... I think we just need to wake her up. I found the 'sleep' setting and turned it off."[/i]

Darazan turns towards Utazó lying on the bed and gentle touches her arm. "Utazó? Utazó.... time to get up."
Apr 7, 2015 7:47 pm
"Now I've turned the sleep function off I will try healing myself. Hopefully I've got this right."

Darazen lies on a similar bed, turns off the sleep function, and presses the heal button.

Utazó slowly opens her eyes and sees Tara standing besides her. Easing herself up to a seated position, she gently rubs her eyes and then stretches her arms high above her head. Feeling truly rested for the first time since her childhood, Utazó assumes that she must have been sleeping a good eight to ten hours. "Sorry everyone, didn't think I would be out this long. I haven't had a rest like that in many years and other than a weird dream about babies at the end there, even my dreams were fantastic."

Swinging around so that her legs are now hanging off of the edge of the bed she notices Darazen is partaking in a nap himself. Nudging Tara as she continues to stretch and rub her eyes she says, "He's got the right idea!"

Darazen wakes up and looks over at Utazo, "Hmmm, pretty interesting." He is about to say more when the strangely silent Yui suddenly pipes up saying she wants to get moving. "You OK Yui? We can certainly get moving, but the technology here is absolutely fascinating. Has everyone grabbed ciphers? I took the telepathy devices. There are 16 here so we can all use them when most effective. I also took the intellect enhancer."

Khoren drops a prod stick on the desk, and fingers the Ear Worm thoughtfully before pocketing it. He nods at Darazen and Utazo. "I haven't eaten in two days. My lips are dry and cracked. My lungs hurt from the poisoned air." He looks around the room. "We can't linger much longer, we have things to do."
