November 26th, 1924, Valley of Kings, Egypt

https://i.imgur.com/eKzsj0s.png

You have been working tirelessly with shovel, spade, and trowel in the Egyptian Valley of Kings. The sun beats down upon you as you carefully unveil the façade of an ancient structure cut deep into a cliff face, buried by the sands of several millennia. Your party of contracted laborers works like busy ants and soon a doorway is uncovered. You stand proudly at the top of thirteen steps that descend to an entryway covered by a large stone slab.
OOC:
Feel free to describe and introduce your characters and something the others might know about you.

With a sharp word and quick wave Thomas motions the workers to step aside so his boss would have a better view. He puts a cigarette between his lips and lights it. The cigarettes were hand rolled, but not by Thomas. He buys them at a market stall near his rooms from an old man with a huge pearly smile and yellow stained fingers. The lighter is cheap, and second hand. The silver plating has worn through to bare steel on the corners and it is badly dented. He closes his eyes and for moment, and he is almost able to pretend that the grains of sand hitting his face are flakes of snow. He breaths out his lungful of tar and the moment is over.

His clothes are creased and rumpled, which could have been from the work of the day, but equally could have been because Thomas had slept in them last night. His face is sun scoured and his eyes are bloodshot. Only two things about Thomas looked well cared for. His boots, which are supple and well oiled and the curved fighting knife that shines in the sun on his belt. The sheathe is polished silver and elaborately decorated with gold wire inlay. The handle is rich dark wood, and looks worn with use. The knife is beautiful, slim, and elegant. Everything Thomas is not. It looks very out of place on his cracked leather belt.

Thomas has a crooked nose and a cauliflower ear that spoke of someone who had been engaged in hand to hand combat many times. He might have been handsome once. He had the chin and jaw of a handsome man. But the effects of life has made his face a craggy ruin.

He looks over to his boss, waiting for orders.
OOC:
Thomas is a disgraced veteran of the Egypt Expeditionary Force. He fought across the Middle East during The Great War. He is solitary, terse, and prone to violent outbursts over seemingly random things. No one seems to know Thomas well beyond his reputation as a man who is good in a scrap. He has been working for The Dilettante for a bit now, providing muscle as required. He always seems like he'd rather be somewhere else, although no one seems to know where that might be.

Dr. Robert S. Whittaker was sitting at a corner camp across the excavation site, his eyes trailing the lines in a thick book. Sweat trickled from his temple in long lines, making a soggy trail mixed with the dust and sand grains. He absentmindedly itched and dabbed the sweat beads with his handkerchief. They were very close to unearthing the structure and claiming whatever was within. Since the discovery of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamen, this has become a literal 'gold rush' in the Academia. Whoever could find another got rights to study and access to funding. This was his chance to be a part of it. Will it be another Pharaoh? Or will it be a priest? May be a scribe?

Their group consisted of an odd motley crew, but he did find an archaeologist among them. Atleast someone will understand the inner meanings instead of salvaging and selling whatever they could unearth. He heard the voice of Thomas Ackerman, who was doing some sort of security work. Snapping the book close, he rose from his seat and took his writing pad. It seemed like the labor crew had finally cleared the entrance. It was time to explore the mysterious structure. He drank water from his canteen, anticipation rising, thinking about the prospect of becoming the first person to explore a virgin tomb.

Robert was wearing a dark earthly brown coat that had gathered a healthy coat of sand and dust. He scratched at his handlebar-style moutsache and rubbed it clean. His dark ash-brown hair was dirty from all the sand, but it was too late to manage that. Cleaning his thick-rimmed spectacles and lighting up his smoking pipe, he walked towards the entrance of the structure. On the way, he nodded affirmatively at the members of the labor crew before coming close to steps that descended into the stone slab doorway. Finally, he could put his knowledge to some practical use.
OOC:
Dr. Robert Sean Whittaker is a Professor of Language who is assigned to the expedition to provide any aid in translation and documentation of whatever is discovered in the tomb.
Feb 14, 2025 8:20 pm
Lady Bishop steps forward and gives a curt nod to Thomas. He may be more rough than her usual acquaintances, but he certainly seems to get results since she arrived in Cairo and escorted her to the expedition site. She remembers when one of the beggars became particularly aggressive, but Thomas gave the man a quick cuff and scattered them away. Of course she had checked with her contacts and his background, discovering his dishonorable discharge. However, such a man would be more willing to work for a woman if he had a hard time finding other contracts. Especially if the money was right and a chance of a ticket away from Egypt.

She opens her parasol and peers down the steps to the entryway. She is surprisingly tall, barely an inch shorter than the men she is working with, but time is clearly catching up with her around her eyes and midsection.

As Thomas smokes and Dr. Whittaker's pipe arrives with its own unique scent, the lingering tobacco smell reminds her of the cigarette case tucked away in her reticule. She recalls clandestine letters, late night visits, and the scent of rose perfume, but the memory fades quickly as sand and dust pelt at her even with the veil over her face.

She turns to the professor and gives him a curt nod as well. She had spent years learning and researching, but not on languages as would be expected so the professor was an invaluable addition to the party. So many had already ventured ahead and been snapped up by other rich patrons and the ones left behind were loathe to leave their comfortable armchairs for the heat they face now. She did wonder if the excitement in his eyes as the tomb entrance comes into view is more a glint of ambition than exhilaration, but she quickly turns back to the prize they have been working towards.

"Ready to put that brain to work Dr. Whittaker?"

Without waiting for an answer, she turns back to the ex-soldier.

"Thank you Ackerman. Let us get out of this sun," and she waves an ivory gloved hand to move the stone slab, opening the entrance.
OOC:
Lady Clara Bishop is a wealthy British noble, the Dilettante as she is unflatteringly known in social circles, who has funded this expedition seeking secrets and wonders of this continent. This desire has only gotten stronger with the recent discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb. She has spent years researching, but not the usual studies for a well-bred lady. No, it has been over dark secrets and rituals and she has been throwing money at anything that will expand this knowledge further. One wonders what motivates her so...

Eugen was busy carrying out surveying work. Concentrating, he looked through the small binoculars mounted on a tripod, read directions from his compass and transferred the results to his sketch map.

All of a sudden he heard excited chatter, which happened every now and then when the workers discussed things with Ackermann that didn't suit them or which they rejected out of superstition. But then he heard Ackerman instructing the workers to be quiet and a strange silence filled the excavation site...

Eugen interrupts his work and looks up. He can see that Dr Whittaker had also stepped out of the shadow of his canopy and is looking over at Ackerman. Lady Bishop stands next to him Bishop.

Instead of being in the pit, shovelling and clearing away the rubble, the work party is gathered at the edge of the pit, gazing down in awe.

He hopes so much that they had found something this time and that the excitement in the air is in vain again.
OOC:

Eugen Chornyi was born in Lemberg, now Lviv. At the time, the city was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1908 the Chornyi family went to Vienna, as Eugen's father was a Railway-Engineer and got a job at the ministry of transport. Before the great war, Eugen moved to London to study archaeology.

He accompanied smaller excavations in several countries and eventually came to Egypt, as the excitement for everything in regards to pharaos, pyramids and mummies also attracted crowds of people willing to spend money – if one is able to recover something extraordinary.

Lady Bishop agreed to provide the necessary funds for a final season. However, success is expected this time.

Under your watchful gaze, the laborers construct a primitive pulley system and hoist the hefty slab blocking the tomb’s entrance into the sky. Stale air from the dark hallway invites you inside with a promise of untold treasure. You excitedly rush inside into the darkness—you are mere steps away from fame, fortune, and the discovery of a lifetime!

As you all enter the ancient chamber, you hear a cry of alarm from one of the laborers. The stone slab behind you suddenly slams to the ground and you are plunged into total darkness. You are trapped!

Feb 14, 2025 11:33 pm
In an unladylike manner, Lady Bishop snaps her parasol shut and eagerly rushes down the steps and into the darkness.

Finally, our hard work and investments are finally paying off!

"Well, I say..."

Suddenly, cries from outside and then a loud *BOOM*!
OOC:
Ooh, that's not good
A high-pitched whimper echoes in the chamber.

Thomas had been waiting for one of the local workmen to fetch an oil lamp when the Lady Bishop rushed down the stairs. Cursing under his breath he followed close behind her. As soon as the slab slams back into place Thomas unthinkingly crouches into a fighting position and draws his knife. The gentle hiss of the blade against the sheath is drowned out by the reverberating boom of the slab. He stares into the dark vainly, desperately wish he had that lamp.

Robert followed Lady Bishop down, wondering what he might discover within this pristine tomb. However, the curse of this locked tomb seemed to have answered their intrusion. As the sound echoed from the crash of the massive stone slab, he turned back and screamed, "NOO!"

After the scream and darkness, it dawned on him that he along with his companions were trapped in this nascent tomb. Was this going to be their end? Surely not such! Lady Bishop had hired all those laborers; they will definitely try to lift or break open the stone. Many must have not received their pay yet. What he needed right now was a light!

Robert spoke out, "I hope everyone is alright? Lady Bishop? I heard you. Are you hurt? Mr. Chornyi and Mr. Ackerman? I can't see a damn thing. We need a light."
OOC:
So, 1 sanity loss. However, I can't access the character sheet from here. It is accessible from the characters section of GP but I can't make any changes there.

After catching up with the others, Eugen follows them down the stone steps. He would have preferred it if they had taken some photographs and descriptions first.

But Lady Bishop did not know the usual procedure, closed her parasol and hurried down the steps with Ackermann. Dr Whittaker followed them, and so eventually did Eugen.

* * *

As he is the last to enter, he feels how much cooler it is here. But the air tastes pale and stale. His eyes have no time to adjust to the darkness of the chamber and before he can do anything, it goes pitch black with a deafening crash.

Eugen takes a leap forwards.

‘Whoaa!’ he shouts in a shrill tone.

* * *

‘I ... I ...
My bag. Candles,’
he answers Dr. Whittaker, but his heartbeat is pounding in his ears.

He fiddles awkwardly with his satchel.

Any items listed on your sheet are on your person, however if there's something not mentioned that you think your character might carry, you can make a Luck roll (within reason, no flamethrowers!) to see if you have it or left it in camp. (For example, Thomas may not have got his lantern, but he may have some matches for lighting his cigarettes)
Feb 16, 2025 11:41 am
There's a scratch of a match and a spark as a match flame lights up the face of Eugen, transferring the flame to a candle, and filling the area with light. You stand in a hallway about 25 feet in length and free of debris. Damaged and faded hieroglyphs line the walls and the flickering candlelight highlights cracks running through many of the frescoes.

In the darkness, at the end of the passageway, the vague shapes of furniture or similar objects can just be seen. The stone that fell back into place completely covers the entrance, there are no gaps and you have a heavy sense of how short your air supply might be, this Necropolis could well be your tomb.
Feb 16, 2025 12:17 pm
Robert nodded at Eugen when the room was finally illuminated by the candlelight. "Excellent work, Mr. Chornyi. It is my folly; I should have brought a lantern with me. In the depths of this tomb, a light source with oil would have served us all. Do you have more candles perhaps?"

Robert moved closer to the wall depicting images and hieroglyphs. He remembered that a tomb always had another entrance through which they might be able to exit. However, often those were hidden in riddles of images, depictions, and stories written on the walls. The oppressed air of the tomb and the flickering candlelight were a grim reminder of how little time they had to find out this exit. Bringing out his writing pad, he started drawing the symbols, trying to understand what it meant about the original resident of the tomb.
OOC:
I am guessing a language roll would be needed. Great, I think that's a hard success?

The Doctor inspects the walls. The etchings seem to tell a story. They depict a Pharaoh, who appears to possess great powers beyond those of ordinary mortals. The disjointed images on the panels show him smiting those who do not follow him, and that many suffered and perished under his rule.
OOC:
(Note, an extreme success would yield more information in this case. For your skill, that would mean you need a 14, so if you feel it's worth it, you could spend 11 Luck to achieve it. Be warned, your Luck pool is finite though!)

"Thank you, Robert. Ahm ... Doctor Whittaker.
This is one of four candles.

Any idea how to get out of here? I can't hear any working sound from behind the slab."

He tries to hold the candle so that as much light is shed as possible and keeps looking for a way out.

Dr Robert also learns that the Pharaoh rejected the concept of an afterlife, claiming it held nothing compared to the sights and visions he could unveil in this waking world. His followers would behold the truth while those unworthy would rest with their old gods in an early grave.

Feb 16, 2025 6:01 pm
Robert made hasty notes as he continued to scratch the symbols. Moments passed when suddenly he realized that he had translated the section of the wall. Turning toward others, he sighed, "I don't think we can find help from this side of the entrance. We surely have to go and find some other way out."
Feb 16, 2025 7:57 pm
Lady Bishop is revealed in the weak candlelight, unflatteringly plopped on the ground with watery eyes. She removes a lacy handkerchief and dabs at her eyes then looks forlornly at the others.

As the candle flares to light any who look at Thomas see a wild faraway look in his eyes, and the moment passes. He takes in the scene and slowly stands out of his combat stance, but doesn't sheathe the knife. He takes the candle proffered to him. He walks to Lady Bishop and stands awkwardly for a moment, caught between sheathing the knife, or putting down the candle. He jams the candle into a crack in the stone wall and offers a hand to Lady Bishop. When done he takes the candle back into his left hand and surveys the scene around him.

Robert warily eyed Lady Bishop and said, "M'Lady, I think it would be unwise to wait for our rescue. We have no idea when and if the excavation team would be able to remove the stone. I think if it took longer, we might run out of air and perish here. I suggest we try to find an alternate route of exit. If my memory serves right, we can definitely find some other way out."

He turned to Eugen, "Mr. Chornyi, you can enlighten us about this matter. Isn't there supposed to be secret routes out of the tomb or pyramids?"

Finally he turned to Thomas, "Mr. Ackerman, would you like to explore further into the tomb? You must have already understood that without the help of some explosives, like dynamite, we won't be able to remove this obstruction quickly. Then again, that would destroy this prized tomb, and we wouldn't want that."

The table is clearly rotted and would not be safe to sit on. The chest however looks ornately decorated and solid and does not appear to be locked.

I mentioned earlier about a roll of 100 being a fumble if the skill is over 50, however if you have a skill of under 50, that chance increases. Any roll of 96-00 against a skill of less than 50 is a fumble.
Thomas thinks he sees something on the ground and bends to look, the candle slips from his grasp and goes out. You are plunged into darkness once more.

Then he says:

We just have to think carefully.

I suggest the following:

Examine the end of the hallway and examine the cracks behind the frescoes.
Last but not least: the candles won't last forever. We also should look for torches. "

With the light returned, Robert is able to inspect the symbols on the plaster wall. Not all are standard Hieroglyphs, but those that he can understand suggest a mystical nature, a warning and a protection, presumably placed to prevent people passing through. Judging by the hole in the plaster, this seems to have been ignored by whatever tomb robbers got here before you.
Feb 18, 2025 6:48 pm
A derisive snort escapes from the noble as she scoffs at the occult symbols of warning over the archway. She had seen so many through her studies that it would have been odd to NOT see those symbols.

Ignoring the signs of warning, she moves out of the way to let Dr. Whittaker get a better look. As she waits for him to analyze the archway, she slowly begins to reach towards the chest. After all, such a beautiful chest must have something valuable inside or, at the very least, some royal cushions when the light suddenly goes out.

Lady Bishop's whimpers can be heard again until Eugen re-lights the candle.

Now wary of opening the chest too, she takes a better look at the table.

"Mr. Chornyi, if this table is not very valuable, perhaps we can take it apart to create makeshift torches?"

She then perches on the very edge of the chest for now, waiting to hear what the experts recommend.

"Sorry m'lady Bishop," he says. He walks to Eugen and relights his candle from the one now burning.
"I'll take a look see at what we've got here." Thomas crouches in front of the opening chipped out of the archway. He thrusts the candle in his left hand toward the opening, keeping his knife ready in his right, and peers into the hole.

Feb 19, 2025 6:09 am
Robert went close to the section where both Eugene and Thomas were working. If there was a way to the other side of the room, it should be here. Was he missing something? Turning to Lady Bishop, he spoke, "This is a tomb of a Pharaoh. So, I must say, we have a great find already. However, the sign of prior excavation, as noted by Mr. Chornyi, is concerning. We should tread carefully here, M'Lady and not touch anything out of whim. From the heiroglyphs that I deciphered, it mentions something about warding against the evil and who would descerate the sacred tomb. But, I guess it has already been tampered with by our previous excavators."

Robert sees no evidence of a trap. It appears to be a simple plaster wall that has been cut into to gain access.
Feb 19, 2025 11:22 am
Thomas also inspects and sees the riches beyond this wall.
Feb 19, 2025 2:34 pm
When Eugen peers through the hole, he recognises all kinds of objects in the flickering light of the candle.

‘Some kind of treasure trove!’ he exclaims, almost blowing out the candle.
Then he comes to his senses and carefully holds the candle through the opening to check the room for foul gases.

‘I can't say who it belongs to, but we're in a well-appointed tomb. I can make out some artefacts. A great thing for Egyptology! Burial objects, intact burial objects! I wonder why the people before us didn't take them?

We really need to keep records; note down what we see and where. This simply has to be analysed before we go any further!

Dr Whittaker, can you take a look inside too? Maybe you can see a cartouche so we know whose tomb we're dealing with. The previous warnings have given no indication of this?’

Eugen is delighted and excited about the find. With a gleam in his eye, he forgets the current situation for a moment and wants to start cataloguing immediately with his brush.
Feb 19, 2025 3:22 pm
Robert could understand the excitement of the archaeologist. Even he himself was excited when he found out that this was a tomb of pharaoh. However, the most important thing was they were surviving here with borrowed time. Who knows how much air remained in the confines of this tomb? He moved closer to the area and crouched down to get a better look.

"I understand, Mr. Chornyi. There will definitely be some valuable artifacts here. This is the tomb of a pharaoh after all. However, we must be careful. In order to get a better look, I will need some more light. Mr. Ackerman, can I have a little bit of light through this hole? We can crawl and enter the next room also. Would you like to accompany me?"
Feb 19, 2025 8:49 pm
‘It would be my greatest honour,’ says Eugen. Then he bows his head in thanks and points in the direction of the chamber.
‘After you, sir.’
Feb 19, 2025 9:06 pm
Lady Bishop stands up and peers around as the party gathers about the hole to the next room.

Treasure! Then there must be even more treasure and secrets further in!

She stays out of the way as Dr. Whittaker and Mr. Chornyi move through the opening. Before she goes to follow, she takes one last look at the chest. Does it have the same symbols of warning like the archway?
Feb 19, 2025 9:54 pm
OOC:
There are no symbols on the chest. Do you dare to open it before going through?
Feb 19, 2025 10:59 pm
Lady Bishop is about to follow after the others, when she takes one last look at the ornate chest. There are no silly warnings on this one and what if this is the one chest that has the secret she has been searching for?

With a furtive look back to the others, she marches back to the chest and holds her parasol in both hands tightly. With a deep breath, she then jams the pointy metal end under the lid and levers it open! She tries to stay on the side of the chest so she doesn't get a mouth full of dust or whatever comes out when it opens.
Feb 20, 2025 12:52 am
As the light recedes as the candles go with the men, Clara opens the chest. As priceless as the chest itself may be, it holds nothing but a few loose beads.
Feb 20, 2025 12:58 am
Thomas bars the entrance with his right forearm.
"Hang on gents," he says.
"Don't you think it strange that someone was here before but left all this just lying about? Something about this don't smell right," Thomas looks around.
"No, something about this don't smell right at all."

Edit:

Finally! A roll without a fumble for Thomas. A success even.

Despite his concerns, Thomas doesn't spot anything untoward.
Feb 20, 2025 10:07 am
After peering through the hole in the wall and seeing nothing Thomas lowers his arm.
"This don't make no sense," he says. He shrugs, and then crawls through the opening into the next chamber, rising to his feet and holding the candle aloft to search for a possible exit.
Feb 20, 2025 3:31 pm
Lady Bishop purses her lips at the nearly empty contents of the chest. She takes a bead as a souvenir and quickly trots back to take up the rear entering the next room.
Feb 20, 2025 4:26 pm
One at a time you crawl through the paster wall and indeed find it filled to the brim with stacks of treasures that almost reach the ceiling; a couch, chairs, tables, stone tablets, statuettes, musical instruments, tapestries, vases, sealed jars, bowls, ostrich-feather fans and more chests. a chariot made of gold stands in the northwest corner of the room along with a row boat.

To the east, a huge stone slab blocks an archway to what is probably another chamber. On either side of the slab, two large statues seem to stand guard. Across the room to the north, an open archway leads to yet another room. It seems a plaster wall also once sealed that room, but has been completely demolished and bits of it lie scattered on the floor around the entrance.

Feb 20, 2025 4:52 pm
Robert crawled through the tight hole and stood up in amazement when he saw all the contents of the room. "This room is filled to the brim with artifacts. It looks like an offering chamber for the dead. However, I am not sure. What do you think, Mr. Chornyi?" He turned and walked closer to the walls to check if there were more murals about any information on the current room. While he was checking on the wall, he peeked through the crashed plaster wall to see what was present on the other side.
Feb 20, 2025 8:22 pm
Thomas takes in the room before him. The artifacts hold little interest to him. Money won't do him any good if they can't find a way back out. He walks to the entrance of the open archway and looks in.

Eugen lifts his hand with the candle as high up as possible and looks around. Again, his focus shifts from the need to survive to the trained and exercised procedures of Archeology.

"Dr. Witthaker, I think we're in the so-called 'Antechamber' of this tomb. These are the gifts for a pleasent afterlife, but not precious in the usual sense. The layout of the rooms with the hallway and this room with it's contents reminds me of Ramsses the First's tomb, better known as KV6, found in 1817.
Also, the Annex"
- and Eugen points to hole at the north side of the chamber - "is connected with a smaller side-tunnel. It's likely that we find canopic jars, more furniture, clothes and weapons there. But no treasures or Usheptis."

Eugen turns to the slab and makes a few steps towards it. In a distance that resembles a perfect triangle of the two statues and him, he stops dignified.

"Given the facts we know about that dynasty and it's architectures, we should find the burial chapter behind that slab. The two statues are the guards. Jackals, sent out by Anubis himself. Next to the burial chamberis the treasure chamber."

Eugen's chin touches his chest as he sighs deeply. He closes his eyes and shakes his head.

"These tombs usually only have one single entrance ..."

He steps through to the annex with one of the candles (he has the first candle, which is now about halfway burnt down)

Feb 21, 2025 12:59 pm
Robert nodded at the information given by Eugen, "Yes, Mr. Chornyi, I absolutely agree with you. If we consider the rooms in such an arrangement, then, as you said, the next room should be the burial place. Isn't that where the body is prepared by the priest of Anubis and then taken deep inside to the actual buriel chamber with sarcophagus? I agree with you regarding the canopic jars, the vessels that hold the removed organs. By that logic, we are then proceeding more inwards. However, I believe there should be an alternate route to exit. We must look for any mention of the pathway of Ra's blessing entering the blessed tomb."

He walked alongside Eugene to closely examine the two statues and whether there was any writing that he could decipher to get more information about the tomb.
Feb 21, 2025 3:25 pm
"How wonderful to know I have the best men on the job."

Lady Bishop smiles at the two scholars working together to figure out a way to the next room. Having lounged enough, her curiosity gets the best of her and she follows after Thomas, on the lookout for occult symbols like she saw above the archway indicating important treasures and torches.
Feb 21, 2025 4:06 pm
Looking closer at the sealed doorway, Eugen is somewhat surprised his speculations were not exactly accurate. The statues are in fact mummified men, impaled on long spears to hold them upright. As if that wasn't gruesome enough, their heads have been replaced, one with a jackal, the other with that of a crocodile.

Both guards are holding weapons, the crocodile head holds a bronze Egyptian battle-axe and the jackal-headed man holds a sickle-like sword, a khopesh.
OOC:
Can I take a Sanity check (0/1) for this gruesome sight. (I'll exempt Clara , and Thomas from this for now, as they have wandered to the Annex rather than looking closely)

Thomas is entranced by the motion at the end of the hallway, and seems for a moment as though he's going to take a step forward, but the shriek from the archeologist breaks the spell that held him. He jerks, a look of revulsion across his face, and whips around to face the other two men, knife held at the ready.

"What is it Doctor," Thomas asks. His eyes are scanning the end of the room Eugen and Dr. Whittaker are standing in for trouble. When he sees no immediate threat he quickly looks to Lady Bishop, who appears to be lounging on the ancient furniture. A quick scan of the room seems to show nothing has changed.

Thomas moves away from the chilling scene in the north passage toward the two men.

The noble lady has turned around and is heading into the annex when she hears the screams and shouts of Mr. Chornyi and Dr. Whittaker. She is frozen in place as Thomas whips towards her and the room she has just left with a knife in hand, glinting in the candlelight. She keeps her eyes on him and the knife as he passes by her to check that the others are safe. Her eyes snap back to his face as he addresses her and she tries to appear calm, despite feeling very much the opposite now.

"O-of course Mr. Ackerman. I feel quite useless though as I do not have the strength or knowledge that you all have. Perhaps I will search for more torches in the room we were just in then."

She side-eyes the knife still in his hand and scoots back to the treasure room and checks on the men they just left.

"Gentlemen, are you hurt?"

Eugen is speechless. Shocked by insight.
OOC:

Are the bodies with the heads old or "new", I mean: does it look like they'd been placed here, when the tomb was sealed?
Can we even examine this, or is the terror too big?

Feb 22, 2025 10:51 am
OOC:
Yes, you can examine, the Sanity is from the initial shock. They are old but seem to be preserved even without wrappings. They were likely placed here when the tomb was sealed, but you have not been able to ascertain when that was (waiting on an Archaeology roll from anyone else to see if they have insight )

Edit:Just noticed no-one else has anything worth rolling in that skill other than Eugen! You could try to push your roll, that might entail something like touching something at the risk of it breaking. Alternatively you could drop a bunch of Luck on your Arch. roll.

Feb 23, 2025 8:22 am
Thomas follows Lady Bishop over to the other two men. He looks over the two corpses mounted in front of the closed archway.
"Steady on men," says Thomas from Lady Bishop's side.
"They're just mummies. The dead hold no horrors for the living. Besides, they're just the chaps we were looking for. They'll be worth quite a lot once we get them topside," Thomas tries to twist his face into a reassuring smile, but it comes out more like a pained grimace, as though his muscles were unfamiliar with the shape he was trying to form. His eyes have taken on a long stare, like he's barely seeing what's before him. Anyone who looks into his face can see a feral set to his jaw, and in his eyes the flash of blades, and gouts of gunfire from long ago.
"That's right. The dead hold no horrors for the likes of us." He says this quietly. Almost as to himself.

We're trying to find a way out, which still our main goal, I guess. So, I'll take a look at that slab. When the third candle will be close to an end, we'll have to burn the furniture - but that might cost oxygen."

Then he goes close to the slab to inspect it.

The candle in one hand, he picks his small brush from his satchel and puts it between his lips. Then he picks his trowel and starts examining the joints and cracks.
Pushing the trowel into bigger cracks, switching tools, brushing off dust and sand …

"Goodness yes, we are very lucky to have you here with us Mr. Ackerman. I did not quite know what to do when I cut myself over there. I usually observe..."

Thomas would have had to put his candle down somewhere to treat Lady Bishop. Probably jammed it in the crack of the wall somewhere. It would be easy enough for Dr. Whittaker to pick it up and take it if he wanted, since Thomas and Lady Bishop were still in the radius of light of Eugen's candle.
Feb 27, 2025 6:13 am
Robert nodded to Eugen, "I am a bit shaken from this bizarre revelation. I wasn't expecting statues made from human bodies. However, this has enlightened me, and I wish to explore the north room."

He then looked at Thomas working on Lady Bishop, "An unfortunate occurence, M'Lady, but this is a rough and strange place. You must have missed the sharp object that has caused you such a wound. Be careful about what you touch. Mr. Ackerman, now that you are done with the bandaging, may I have the candle? I am thinking about exploring that side room. You too can accompany me if you want."
Feb 27, 2025 9:10 am
"Something isn't right in that room Doctor," says Thomas. He looks around sees the near impossibility of moving the huge slab Eugen is working on. He sighs.
"But I suppose options are slim. Right then, maybe you can figure something out." Thomas raises the candle, grips his knife tightly and motions for the doctor to move toward the North passageway.

Feb 27, 2025 3:13 pm
Thomas grabs the candle and leads the way toward the northern room, stepping over the plaster that was stripped away by whoever got here before you to reveal the annex.

The room is modestly filled with religious artifacts, the walls lined with 3 inch high clay cones, that Robert recognises as funerary cones. On the northern and southern walls are two large murals and on the eastern wall is a shrine on which stands an inverted 5 foot tall golden ankh. Hundreds of golden tendrils reach out from the symbol that appear to be moving as the candlelight flickers over them, causing an unsettling sight.

A large mat lies at the shrine's base, on which is sprawled a human skeleton dressed in decaying tatters. Beside the corpse are a satchel and a small sack.

At this point, Eugen has brushed the entirety of the stone and has found nothing.
Feb 27, 2025 8:04 pm
Lady Bishop has failed to find any openings behind plaster like Eugen found earlier, but she is delighted to assist the archaeologist with his search any way she can. She gives the statues a side eye when she gets too close and is very careful that her skirts do not brush the corpses.

There is a demolitions skill for more complex use, but using a single stick won't require any special skill though using it might cause the tunnels to collapse so there is risk involved. Absent Demolitions, Mechanical Repair would come a close second, or at a push, a Hard Know roll would find a good spot at the entrance (and three rounds preparation).

Robert was curious about the contents of the satchel, but when he found the passport and the journal, he was quite elated. Rifling through the passport and journal, he attempted to gather all the information about the owner. "It seems to be someone who must have came before us for this tomb. The dynamite also proves that."

The writings were difficult to decipher, and Robert was astonished that he couldn't make any sense of it. He tried bring it closer to the candle flame and read in close light.

The translation takes some time as Robert stumbles over some of the words. In that time, the first candle (held by Eugen) reaches the end of its life, leaving you with just one candle lit. The tentacles on the ominous inverted cross-like shrine seem to reach out further toward you.

There are entries dated from 1910 to 1916 describing Sascha Karner's time as an anthropologist. It also outlines his trip to Egypt and his attempts to unearth ancient Egyptian artifacts. In addition, Karner writes about his English companion, an archaeologist named Dr Gerald Sutton.

There are many entries outlining the difficult work environment due to the Great War and often Karner praises Sutton for his assistance in dealing with the English authorities.

The final four entries appear to be the most significant.
OOC:
While Dr Robert translates, what are the rest of you doing? There are still the two murals on the north and south walls and the shrine to inspect.

Eugen hardly understands the German words Robert is citing. And while he listens to Robert, his eyes run over the chamber he has not visited yet.

"I need light to inspect the walls. There are paintings. I'm gonna light the 3rd candle now."

Eugen walks to the mural on the north side of the chamber and picks the 3rd candle and lights it up with a match.

"Let's see what we have here ..."

The mural on the northern wall depicts a sickening scene of an Egyptian city being attacked by an army of horrific beings. There are two notable types of creature: those with the bodies of men and the heads of animals, who wield various weapons, and those with the bodies of animals and the heads of men.

Black tendrils burst from the ground and sky, tearing the city and its occupants apart. Some of the creatures eat corpses that have been laid upon tables, while others frolic in the chaos. A pharaoh, robed entirely in black, is depicted with an impossibly dark face and seated atop a pyramid-like throne borne by the hybrid monsters; he is being carried through the horrific scene.

The shrine holds countless pieces of ancient incense in small compartments, honeycombed throughout its base. Nearly 100 tiny statues of men stand around the base of the shrine. She also realises the tendrils are not actually moving, it's a trick of the light and they are in fact motionless.

The final pages of the journal...

https://i.imgur.com/VvPS400.png
Feb 28, 2025 11:22 pm
As Robert translates the final lines, there is suddenly a noise, a muffled scraping sound followed by a loud heavy clang.
Mar 1, 2025 7:07 am
Robert was deep in thought as he relayed the contents of the journal. The children of Sphinx? Was that a cult? Were they operating then and is continuing now? Was the accident of their entrapment really natural or contrived? But his pondering was cut short by the sound and clang. He looked up, "What was that?"
Mar 1, 2025 3:00 pm
"A jackal's head, on a man's body.
Black tendrils tear the world apart.
Demise in floods so bloody,
An insane god's manner of art.

Hihihihiii."
, he rhymes.

Eugen is stressed, just a step closer to lose it, as he can't cope with the situation. Locked up in a tomb, dim light that slowly will vanish, grotesque corpses, pictures of unknown terrors and death.

And now these noises.

"Let's hope that something just of fell over. Hihi."

With a gesture he wipes the figures of the shrine into his satchel, then he pulls out his trowel and wields it like a sword.
Mar 1, 2025 3:22 pm
Robert eyed Eugen with a worried glance. He placed a hand on his shoulder and gently squeezed it. "Mr. Chornyi, get a hang of yourself. We will definitely get out of this place. Don't worry."
Mar 1, 2025 4:52 pm
"Sure, sure."

Eugen nods.
Mar 2, 2025 3:49 am
The shrine looks like something that would interest Mr. Chornyi and she turns to ask him to look at what she has found, but sees him seemingly enthralled with the mural. She turns back and tries to recall anything she learned from him or her book when Dr. Whittaker exclaims he has translated the final pages and then a CLANG!

She gasps and holds up her parasol as though ready to brain whatever is arriving, but puts her parasol down again as Mr. Chornyi starts to sing a song only he understands. As Dr. Whittaker puts a steadying hand on him, she nods along.

"Yes Mr. Chornyi, that is probably just the workers finally getting the entrance open. Right?"

She looks at the others for reassurance.

Mar 4, 2025 12:49 pm
"We should go back to the main room. At least there's so much stuff. There must be something that serves us as a tool or torch. Hihi."

Eugens gesture and overall pose do not quite reflect his words. It's a defensive pose, the trowel still held like a small sword in front of him, the 3rd candle in the other.

He's slightly shaking.
Mar 4, 2025 5:27 pm
Disturbed by the violent end to the man and not finding anything as interesting as the treasure room, Lady Bishop nods at Dr. Whittaker's question. It seems the most valuable things in this room were the man's possessions.

"Yes, maybe one of you will fare better in finding a torch or something in that room. And did one of you not mention there being something interesting behind the plaster at the entrance? I can take the candle so you can concentrate Mr. Chornyi."

She offers a gloved hand to grab the candle that is quickly melting down to nothing.
Mar 4, 2025 8:12 pm
Carefully Eugen puts the candle into Lady Bishop's hand.

"Watch out, My Lady. The wax is hot and trickling down here.
But at least the pain is proof that we're still alive."
Mar 4, 2025 10:26 pm
Moments pass as you decide what to do and the second candle is almost extinguished. Suddenly, heavy footsteps echo round the tomb.
Mar 5, 2025 6:26 am
Robert turned towards the sound of footsteps. "Wait, what was that? Aren't we the only ones inside the tomb?"

Thomas quickly hurries back to the others.
"That big stone slab in the treasure room is moving. There's footsteps behind it. Do you think the crew could have found another way in?" Thomas is whispering, for reasons he isn't consciously aware of.
Mar 5, 2025 12:04 pm
"That might be. However, I can't think of anything so big that we hear the footsteps here in the Annex.", Eugen whispers as well.

"Anyways. We're trapped in this part of the tomb. Why not get back to the main room, grab anything we could utilise for light or defense? We also could go back to the stair, block up the small whole we crawled through. Thomas still has the explosives?"

An anxious and loud breath leaves his throat. Then he makes a step forward, the trowel in his hand as if it was a crucifix.
OOC:
Eugen does not have any helpful skills in the current situation, if there's no sudden epiphany in terms of history/archeology. We could remain here and wait or go all in - the party's trapped and something big is approaching us. We can wait, fight for flee. But waiting doesn't seem fun ...
Mar 5, 2025 12:55 pm
Robert eyed the direction from where they heard the sounds of footstep, "You mean another crew? Or our own workers? I suggest we go to the room and hide somewhere."

He feels the knife hilt in his hand. It's smooth, and worn, and fits his hand from years of use. He doesn't know what's out there, but he knows it isn't good. He knows the Lady Bishop is within arms reach, around the corner and behind that gaudy golden chariot. She had a candle and a book of matches. He feels the dynamite tucked into his belt with his left hand. Then he moves his hand down to his pocket reaching for his lighter.

Just to clarify, @Stalker05 do you mean the entrance to the tomb (through the crawl space) or the newly opened doorway ?

Just saw your post on Discord, so assume you're following everyone else :)
Mar 10, 2025 8:23 am
With whatever it is distracted momentarily, you are able to slip from the antechamber and through the newly removed stone block. As soon as you get through, whatever it is is on the move again, knocking things aside in its path.

You are still in complete darkness so can't see anything in the room you are in, though you feel something hard and crunchy underfoot.
Mar 10, 2025 5:18 pm
Lady Bishop does her best to not yelp as her feet crunch upon whatever is beneath them. She really hopes that the creature's knocking of things and movement has allowed the group to escape. In her haste to move away from this unnatural thing, she forgot to give Thomas the matches as well. As she hears others move nearby, she digs in her reticule and retrieves the matches, pushing them towards whoever comes nearby. Hopefully it's Mr. Ackerman.

In the haste, Robert tried his level best to crawl away from his previous hiding position. Who knows if he succeeded or not? But the strange crunching sound that he heard from the ground beneath didn't give him much confidence. He started to feel for the wall and reach one corner of the room he was in.
Mar 10, 2025 8:06 pm
Eugen tries not to move too much. The crunchy sounds seem loud in his ears, and he doesn't want the thing to turn around. With one hand, he fumbles in the dark to get an idea of the room and hopes to find something they could use to block the entry.
Mar 10, 2025 9:11 pm
Robert feels his way along the wall to his left, more large pieces of detritus on the ground almost making him trip, until he gets to the far corner, some ten feet away.

Eugen feels to his right and finds a wall that runs south, also experiencing something under foot.
Mar 11, 2025 7:50 am
Thomas moves deeper, trying to discover if this is a chamber, or a new tunnel.

"Thomas? What if you use the dynamite to get rid of that ... Thing?", whispers Eugen.
OOC:

Robert stood still and held his breath, trying to lay still for sometime. In the darkness, where vision had no sway, maybe the hearing would help his senses. He strained to hear any odd footstep sound or different breathing, something bestial and not human-like.

The others move past her too quickly for Lady Bishop to determine who is Mr. Ackerman. She keeps the matches in her hand as she attempts to move forward. She puts out her dominant right hand and feels for a wall or something to guide her around the room, looking for a new opening to go through.
Mar 11, 2025 10:25 pm
Eugen listens for signs of the creature's approach, but it doesn't appear to be getting closer, but there is a racket as it knocks things about, perhaps searching for you.

Robert hears that too.

Thomas follows the left (north) wall and joins Robert in the corner, then Clara joins the two of them.
Mar 12, 2025 3:14 am
Lady Bishop recognizes Mr. Ackerman's cigarette scent and pushes the matches still in her hand into his free one. Then, she proceeds to continue around the corner, following the wall, still looking for an opening. She would like to get as far away from the frightening creature as possible.
Mar 12, 2025 9:45 am
Eugen sneaks along the wall around the little bulge. He crouches and lights the last candle to get an idea of where he is and what the sorroundings are.
OOC:
Seems like Eugen is separated from the group a little. But I asume lighting a candle there is safe. The glimmer of the light should be in a shadow-of-sight in regards to the hole we came in.

A hand strikes Thomas in the chest, and he nearly yelps before he realizes the Lady Bishop has shoved a pack of matches at him. He quickly takes and pockets them in the pocket with the candle stub. Without warning a candle flares to life. Thomas spins around to stare at Eugen. He quickly takes in his surroundings, stunned slightly by the new light, realizing that even dim light seems bright in total darkness.

Clara feels her way round to the east wall and finds more debris under foot and some leaning against the wall. Her hand brushes against one and it feels like wood.

The strike of a match in the southwest of the room, lights up the figure of the archaeologist and as he puts the flame to the fourth candle, it flickers, lighting up most of the room you are in.

The room is roughly the same size as the antechamber and dominated by a large open sarcophagus made if gold. On the floor surrounding it is shattered wood of various sizes, from splinters to large pieces. Some of the larger pieces appear to have scenes painted on them.

A pair of wooden oars stand in the far corner of the chamber (beside Robert.) To the south an archway leads into the darkness.

Mar 13, 2025 7:35 am
Thomas looks around and sees nothing of immediate use to help their escape. He moves and quickly and quietly as he is able to Eugen.
"Quickly Mr. Chornyi, to the archway. Let us see if our escape may be made there," he leans in and speaks quietly, then motions for Eugen to move south so they can peer in with the light.

Robert can hear a sharp intake of breath as Lady Bishop is surprised by the sudden light. She blinks a couple of times and then looks about the room before checking what her hand had brushed while blindly following the wall. What she thought was wood was truly a wooden oar and the crunchy items beneath her feet were, fortunately, just wooden debris. She quickly puts her pen knife away and grabs a wooden oar for protection, following after Thomas and Eugen to the opening she has been searching for.
Mar 13, 2025 2:53 pm
Robert's eyes got dazed by the sudden light, but he blinked it into focus. He was surprised to see the enormous scale of the golden sarcophagus, but his thought went out to wild speculation about what was kept inside it. Was the creature that stalked them kept inside this? He was brought back to reality as Lady Clara took one of the oars. Following her, he too took the other one and crept towards the southern arch.
Mar 13, 2025 7:22 pm
Eugen had put the satchel away to light the last candle.
OOC:
I did not do it actively, but somewhere above it was narrated that way, so I'll follow along.
"Let's move on. Everyone here?", he whispers.

He tries to move forward carefully, holding the candle high up to cast as much light as possible into the darkness.

"We better get some wooden pieces and fabric, if available. Would serve us as torch and weapon."
OOC:
What do we see?
Can we still hear the creature? Does it move fast or slow, in general? Have we been able to estimate this?
Mar 13, 2025 7:41 pm
OOC:
From what you could tell when you were in the same room, it was moving slowly, like a stalking animal. Now the sounds are frenetic in the antechamber, you imagine the thing looking for you. It's only a matter of time..

Eugen leads the way through a short corridor and into a square room about half the size of the burial chamber. The room is filled with an assortment of treasures; fragile artwork, sculptures, ceramics, small boats and chariots made from gold, and even a model of an entire Egyptian city. Robert is at a loss to see that the next room ended up as a dead end. But there should be someway to get out! This tomb should not have one and only entrance! He sighed in exasperation. As Lady Bishop follows the others to the next room, she grips hard the oar in her hand and leans on it in despair upon finding no other exit from the room. They were quickly running out of air and light with some sort of monster roaming this tomb. They may very well end up in a more grisly end than the poor fellow they met earlier. A solitary tear drips onto the ground, but she sniffs hard and refocuses on the task at hand. She was not going to meet her Maker without giving it everything she had!

Though she is fascinated for a moment by the miniature Egyptian city, she focuses on attempting some sort of barricade or cover against the ghastly creature stalking them. She tries to leverage the carriage forward with her oar to cover the entrance. She also plans to push over some statues onto the creature and takes a moment to listen for its location now.

Mar 15, 2025 9:16 pm
Thomas is not a scholar. He spent no time in fancy schools, nor has he read the great works. Thomas might have gotten a better education, if it weren't for his family's common station, and the war. But the war was it's own kind of education. A cruel and brutal one. People look at Thomas and often mistake his stare as vacant, and empty, instead of what it is. They ignore that Thomas survived one of the deadliest fronts of the Great War. They ignore that to survive what he had Thomas was three things, lucky, cunning, and willing to act. He looks down and sees five jars. Four have animal heads, and one is different. Quick as a cat Thomas snatches the lid off the jar that didn't fit the others and peers inside. His knife is held high, and ready to strike what his gut tells him is inside.

Though it is probably faint, a steady loud beating sound resounds in her ears, emanating from the jars inside the chest! She is drawn forward and gets a sickly feeling as her eyes fall upon the jar with the inverted ankh.

Thomas, ever a military man, is quicker than the others and grabs the horrid jar, snatching its lid off. He lowers it a little, prepared to do what he must. She peeks inside and her eyes become as big as saucers, seeing for the first time a living, beating human heart!

Thomas takes off through the corridor and into the burial chamber, coming face to face with the remains of the creature that has been stalking you. With the benefit of candlelight, you now see the Abomination, slumped against the sarcophagus, a huge muscular man draped in decaying linen. Its skin is slick with pus and bile, pouring from open sores, especially from a hole in its chest where the heart should be. Its head is that of a large African Golden Wolf. It sits unmoving, eyes closed, but all the same, the thing is terrifying.

Thomas makes it through the gap just as the dynamite goes off, the explosion shakes the entire tomb and limestones begin to fall. Now's the time to escape!
OOC:
Eugen comes round at this point.

@tergolap Roll 1d10 to see what your indefinite insanity holds for you. At this stage you are in an underlying state of insanity, can act normally however the result of this roll will become part of your personality, at least until you get successful therapy.
While in this state (which ordinarily lasts 1d10 hours) and further sanity loss will trigger another Bout of Madness.

OOC:
As you all make the run for the exit, there's a chance of being hit by falling debris. Can each of you make a Luck roll. If you fail, I'll need a dodge roll to avoid being hit by something.

Rolling for Indefinite Insanity, roger.

Do I have to roll for Luck + Dodge as well? Luck would be okay, but as Eugen can't do anything proactively it's just luck after all to not get hit.

Rolls

1d10 for kind of indefinite insanity - (1D10)

(4) = 4

Knifesedgegames sent a note to tergolap
OOC:
Yes, Luck and Dodge for you too, Eugen. You can walk/run by yourself without problem as you have regained consciousness.
Mar 21, 2025 10:56 am
Eugen opens his eyes and looks around, not knowing what's acutally going on.
OOC:
A little fast forward here: I assume the other shout at Eugen, telling him that they'd blown up the entrance and have to run. Now! The loud 'boom' woke him up again and now the have to run ...
In a dizzy state he tumbles through the dusty tomb towards the supposed exit, swinging his clenched fists against invisible menaces.

"Harrrrghhh ... Whahh!"

Pow! Bam!
OOC:

Post Roll:
A LUCK of 60! How could I miss that? 😒

Rolls

Roll for Luck (current Luck 60) - (1D100)

(82) = 82

Try to dodge, if unlucky (vs. 25) - (1D100)

(57) = 57

Robert heard the deafening boom of the dynamite explosion as he wondered whether he would finally be able to get out of the wretched cave. When he recovered from the initial shuddering of the impact, he shouted to no one in particular, "That's it! Let's go to the exit, everyone. Quick!" For once, he thought if the dynamite was successful in carving out their exit, but he ran anyway.

Rolls

Luck vs 29 - (1d100)

dodge roll vs 25 - (1d100)

As Robert and Eugen both scramble through and start to run, debris rains down. Both men fail to avoid getting hit.

Eugen is down!
OOC:
Damage, death and dying

When you take more than half max health in one hit, that's a major wound. Normally you'd roll CON to stay conscious but in this instance, Eugen has also hit 0 health, which means he's dying. Someone can administer first aid to stabilise him (at risk, in this situation), otherwise he must make a CON check each round or die.

Rolls

Eugen damage - (1d10)

(10) = 10

Robert Damage - (1d10)

(2) = 2

Lady Bishop waits with Mr. Chornyi, behind the chariot once again, straining to hear Mr. Ackerman and Dr. Whittaker report they set the dynamite. Was it just her imagination, or was it starting to become hard to breathe as well? As she waits, she looks worriedly at their fallen colleague and then is distracted by the gold of the chariot. Surely, they could take something at least? She grabs a small statuette before she is distracted by Eugen seeming to stir. She starts to shake him to wake him. The event they are waiting for comes faster than expected as Robert arrives to take cover and a hissing sound soon after as the fuse is lit. She covers her ears like the others and the loud explosion seems to wake Eugen out of his stupor.

Through the ringing, she hears Robert shout out: "That's it! Let's go to the exit, everyone. Quick!"

Eugen appears still dazed, but she seems him follow Robert out.

"Bonuses for all of you, let us escape posthaste!"

She hikes up her skirts and tucks the statuette away in her reticule as she runs after the others. Fresh air at last!
OOC:
Oops, shouldn't have spent so much luck!

Oh, but somehow she has lucked out. Maybe a lucky statuette? >.>

Almost as soon as Thomas curls into a ball, the explosion rocks the tomb. Dust gouts out of the small entrance to the treasure room. He immediately rolls back over and starts making his way toward what he hopes is fresh air. Stones from the ceiling are falling all around him and Thomas manages to dodge them. Suddenly his foot catches on something soft and squishy. He looks down and he can barely see through the dust the crumpled form of Eugen.
OOC:
Is it possible to carry Eugen outside and administer First Aid to him while not under a collapsing roof? Thomas is pretty strong.

OOC:
@Natural_Causes Thomas could absolutely carry him out and perform First Aid outside, that would mean a single round of the "Death roll".
Mar 21, 2025 10:39 pm
OOC:
If that's the way you'd like to go, next step would be Eugen's CON roll then First aid. Thomas has the highest First Aid, so is the best man for the job but with assistance can take a bonus die to that roll.
Mar 21, 2025 11:27 pm
As Lady Bishop blinks owlishly in the relative brightness outside, she turns around to see Thomas carrying an unconscious and badly injured Eugen. In the rush, dust, and falling debris, she had failed to see their fallen companion.

"Bloody H-HELP! Bring the doctor now!"

She shouts out to the workers she hopes are still there and moves forward with smelling salts.
OOC:
Adding in the assistance roll for Thomas!
Mar 22, 2025 12:11 am
OOC:
@tergolap This is your moment! Give me that CON roll.
Mar 22, 2025 12:13 am

Checking his pulse, he's still alive but barely. His left shoulder has been badly crushed and is a bloody mess.
OOC:
Thomas, here's your chance to be the hero! Give me that First Aid roll, with an additional d10 bonus die for Clara's help.
Mar 22, 2025 2:52 pm
Robert had been hit by the falling debris too, but his injury was not life-threatening. Upon exiting the tomb and finally coming out, he walked towards Thomas and Clara, eyeing Eugen's injured body, wondering what will happen to the archaeologist. "This looks bad. Will he be alright?"
Mar 23, 2025 2:12 am
As she holds the smelling salts under Eugen's nose, she sees Robert arrive, looking quite injured as well!

"Wh-Dr. Whittaker, you are injured as well! We need a doctor over here, NOW!"
Mar 23, 2025 8:26 am
Thomas sees the bleeding wound on Eugen's head. He whips out his knife, cuts a few strips out of Eugen's shirt and tries to staunch the bleeding.
OOC:
If I'm reading that correctly that's a 19, or a 9? I will post below this as if that's correct.
He's able to get the bleeding under control by applying pressure and tying the strips of fabric firmly. As soon as Eugen seems more stable Thomas stands and looks around the work site.
OOC:
Thomas is trying to read the situation with the work crew and see what they've been up to the whole time they were in the tomb and why it was taking them so long to get the door open.

(10) = 10

Mar 23, 2025 10:41 am
OOC:
Ten is 0 in % rolls, so that's 09, so you're good.
OOC:

Eugen is stabilised and is on 1 hp. He will require a medicine roll to prevent deterioration, within an hour. Failing that he will need a CON roll every hour or return to unstabilised again.
There are only a handful of workers still here, and they explain that some of the workers were laughing at your misfortune and refused to help, eventually leaving the site. Those that remain couldn't get the stone open by themselves and were torn between going to get help and staying for your return. One of the workers says he thinks those that ran might have caused it, and that they were probably cultists. He mentions a name, The Children of the Sphinx.
Mar 23, 2025 10:43 am
OOC:
OK we'll wrap up there, and handwave getting Eugen the medical help he needs.

You did great!

As a reward, you each gain 1d6 sanity points
OOC:
Experience rewards: At the end of a scenario, as well as sanity rewards you get to try to improve skills you have used successfully. This doesn't include those that you used Push or Luck for. Below is the list (unless you see any I missed). Make a roll against each. If you fail (ie roll over) you get to increase the skill by 1d10.
Dr Robert - Hieroglyphs
Listen

Clara - Occult
History

Thomas - Spot Hidden
First Aid
Dodge

Eugen - History
stealth

For a moment, Eugen cuts through the unconciousness and opens his eyes a little. Pain. Everywhere. From the bright light. From his aching body. From the memories.

With dry and chapped lips he whispers:
"Did we all make it?"

Then falls into the blessing of sleep again.

Eugen also gains his first points in Cthulhu Mythos skill, for your first bout of madness you gain 5 points as you have gained some insight into the hidden world

To sum it up and put the rolls into account:

Mythos: +5

Did I get it right?

OOC:
Adapted the values/attributes, but couldn't find the "Mythos" in the Char-Sheet by the life of me. Hence, putting it in the Notes.

Time for a closing statement / epilog for each character?
Mar 23, 2025 6:56 pm
I added Mythos to your skills. Yes, everything’s right.

And yes, once rolls are done, go ahead and write your closing statements

OOC:
What a nail-biting ending, it was good to play a game to understand the tone, rules, and actions characters can do! It was also very helpful to see both sides of the coin when rolls go really well and when they don't, resulting in an accelerating loss of sanity.

After making sure medical help was coming for Eugen, Thomas interrogates the remaining workmen. He gathers as much information about the workmen who buried him alive as he's able. He goes to Lady Bishop in the next couple of days, asking for his payment. Thomas is accustomed to people trying to kill him. But he makes sure they only get to try once. One cold desert night soon after he stalks the streets of Cairo. He's been following one of the workmen who might be one of these Children of the Sphinx.

That's right, he thinks. If you're going to laugh at Tommy Ackerman's demise, you better make sure he's dead. Thomas melts into the shadows, and follows the man, who is stumbling from drink through a lonely alley. Thomas's hand falls to the hilt of his knife, worn smooth with years of use.
You better make damn sure.

In the dim light of the halogen bulb of his study room, Robert wrote a report in his journal. He absentmindedly nursed his wound on the left shoulder where he sustained the injury from falling debris. Beside his journal lay an elaborate report of his findings on the Pharaoh's tomb they had recently discovered. Graphite pencils and dusted rubber bits lay scattered across the tabletop, making it more dirty than it needed to be. He had painstakingly drawn the hieroglyphs of the tomb walls; his efforts, if published, would contribute more to this elusive iconographic language and hopefully acknowledge his name and solidify his position in linguistics. Beside the report, a letter was kept addressing the University of London, the ultimate destination of his findings. However, the legality of the situation of the tomb was murky. By the books, the founder was Lady Clara Bishop, and before he sent out his report, he needed to consult her for any kind of censorship and ownership she claimed. Hence, there was another letter kept beside the report lodged under the weight of an irregular fist-sized rock, taking the role of a makeshift paperweight. Was Lady Bishop really the founder of the tomb? The momentary thought suddenly brought the image of the dead corpse of the previous explorer whose dynamite saved their lives and helped them escape the tomb and...the unliving pharaoh. A flash of pain surged through his temple as Robert grimaced and touched it while hauntingly the halogen bulb blinked, emitting a buzzing sound until it took almost a minute to steady itself.

The Pharaoh was alive because its heart was alive. Some creature that defied normalcy and laws of reality that current medical science will be unable to apprehend or even provide a plausible solution. He continued to rub his temple before starting to recall the incident in his journal. The undying pharaoh and his curse and the cult of Children of the Sphinx. Was this really another side of this fascinating civilization, which is supposed to be so advanced for its time? Could they really have devised a way to escape the finality of death itself, and how many of these undying lords are kept buried in the cold sands of these desolate lands? Will it be even ethical to search for them? Are the old cults using the modern naive historians to bring their undead lords back to life to usher in their rule? Somewhere a lightning crack jolted Robert out of his pondering. Rain started to hit the glass window panes as he looked back at his half-written journal page, his hands shaking uncontrollably when suddenly the halogen light went out, immersing the room in complete darkness.

Lady Bishop frowns deeply as the remaining workers explain what happened and of these cultists, The Children of the Sphinx. She narrows her eyes at the idea of so many traitorous people working among them, but quickly replaces it with good British stoicism.

"Well, I am certainly glad to hear the rest of you stayed and we are bringing Dr. Whittaker and Mr. Chornyi the medical help they require."

Despite her displeasure at their attempts to use them to reanimate the corpse inside, she also secretly smiles. These cultists were exactly who she was looking for. Their secret would be hers, one way or another.
She completes a final flourish on the checks with large bonuses for Thomas, Robert, and Eugen as Mr. Ackerman enters the tent to accept his. He seems quite determined to strike out on his own, but reminds him she will happily reward good information about these cultists if he finds anything. She is rather sure he will find them, but time will tell if he shares anything with her.

Dr. Whittaker is so enthralled with his reports and publications, she is sure she will have to deliver his check. She will also remind him she will keep a generous retainer check if he agrees to being a reference for whatever she finds in the future. She does not mean to keep him here after this horrible incident and his injuries, but she is sure his expertise and this brush with the unknown will be a valuable asset in the future.

Finally, she visits Eugen at his tent, barely discharged from the medical tent after this unfortunate incident. Not only his body, but his mind seemed to be injured from their time in the tomb. His archaeology expertise has been invaluable, but she cannot be sure if he would be of right mind to continue. The bonus should be enough to ensure safe passage and medical care once he returns. However, should he decide to stay, he would probably understand the most of what they were searching for in this tomb. If there was anything to find after the explosion.
After rewarding and learning of the future paths of her recent companions, she sits out on the makeshift porch of her tent to watch the sunset. She takes a long drag of a cigarette as she looks at the last remnant of her lover, the cigarette case. She shuts it quickly and puts it away, dreaming of being one step closer to understanding the unknown.

I‘ve cut it down. Don‘t want to bore you out. :)
Eugen puts the little statuette back on the table next to his sickbed. The movement is long-winded, as every part of his body hurts. He grabs the brown flask and pours some pills onto the blanket that covers his plaster-casted legs.
One, two, three. Five. The doctor said, three per serving. Ha! Little does this idiot of a goatherder know about the pain he is really going through. A good amount of sleep will help, he said! But how? Whenever he closes his eyes, tendrils appear and the demanding beat of a dead heart hammers inside his head.
He swallows the pills with a good sip from a bottle of Gin. Aaah! The warmth of the booze fondles his throat. Putting the Gin back with the same awkward movement, he grabs his diary.

Wednesday, March 25th, 1925. Sidi Bou Said, Tunesia.

Still tied to the bed after all that time. Shoulder and legs still hurt.
Awaiting Dorothy Olsens return from the appointment with that Mr. Crowley: Maybe we‘ll get a passage to Marseille by 2nd of May. Waiting for confirmation - it‘s not granted, that the captain will take another passenger, especially in a wheelchair.

Payouts from Lady Bishop will hold out. She kept her words and was very generous.
Last telegram she‘d sent contained no news of Thomas. But the newspapers from Egypt held reports on several strange homicides. All three persons where day labourers and had obviously been stabbed. I hope, he can wreak revenge onto the Children of the Sphinx.
I wonder, if Robert was able to gather more information on that. Need to visit him, if I can make it back to London.
