Chapter 3: Thistletop

Mar 27, 2025 11:02 am
Wealday, Lamashan 1, 4707 AR

The next week passes without any events, though each day is tense in case the goblins decide to attack. But it seems they are still preparing. Yesterday the sheriff arrived back in town with a few men. Not enough to keep the town safe in a full on assault.

You spend the evening preparing for today, and at dusk you set off from town with Shalelu leading the way. Some of you got horses from Aldern Foxglove, the rest of you have been supplied by Daviren Hosk. It takes a couple of hours to reach the Nettlewood and Shalelu urges you to be quiet. From this point on, there is no telling what you might encounter.
OOC:
Navigating the forest is a Multi-Person Dramatic Task requiring 20 Task Tokens and lasts four rounds.

https://i.imgur.com/FN5bEha.png

Characters are dealt Action Cards as usual during a Dramatic Task. Those attempting the task make relevant skill checks and get a Task Token for each success and raise. Failure means no progress and a Critical Failure reduces progress by one (if any has been made). Will draw action cards only in case of Clubs. If you draw a club, you encounter a complication. Attempts to resolve the task (or Support it!) are made at an additional −2.

Worse, if a roll is failed during a Complication, the Dramatic Task fails—the trap springs, the lock jams, a victim cannot be saved, and so on.
The character may choose not to attempt a roll on a turn he has a Complication—it just costs him precious time.

Support: Characters assisting (via Support) also suffer the Complication penalty, and an additional −2 if their Action Card is a Club! Critical Failure on their part just subtracts from the lead’s roll as usual, however, it doesn’t cause the entire task to fail.

You can post in whatever order you like. You can use any skill you can make a case for. The most obvious is Stealth and Survival. Though I'm not hard to convince if you have a clever idea with another skill.

Edit: Chigaru and Khel drew clubs and have complications.

Okay, so this is a bit confusing. Does a person who is trying to resolve the task and has complications take a -4 total penalty to skill check?
Mar 27, 2025 2:05 pm
OOC:
It is a -2 if you drew a club. It is also a -2 to support someone who drew a club. So if you drew a club are supporting a character who got a club is worth another -2. I had to read it a couple of times in the rulebook myself.

Before the journey, Khel spent some time reading books on this part of Nettlewood, getting some pointers from Brodert Quink and discussing and inquiring with him for some pointers. He tried to recall if he could spot some obvious landmarks and used common sense in exploring this deep forest.

So, I am using common knowledge for the next text and flavored it as discussing the Nettlewood with Brodert Quink. Hope that is acceptable for this task? Or else I will roll notice again. I am going to use a benny to reroll.

Truth be told, Grim was a bit disappointed when they skirted the Owlbear's lair. He had heard tales of their majestic bearing and awesome, destructive might and was keen to see how well those tales mirrored reality. And yeah, clobber one over the head, make a nice mantle piece at the Hagfish. Get some free coin at the tables.

Shaking his head of the thought for now, he continues to look for signs throughout the forest. With a slight smile, if not an Owlbear, maybe a bugbear.

Shalelu Andosana
You come deeper into the forest, and you start seeing goblin tracks. At one point you even spot a patrol of scouting goblins. Shalelu warns caution, if a returning patrol goes missing it can draw more of them.

You reach an area where the briars and thistles that grow so rampantly in Nettlewood are even more dense and tangled. You must be close to the see though, as it is not quite dense enough to block the sound of waves crashing on the unseen beaches to the west, the undergrowth is
certainly thick enough to block sight and access to the coast.

Few trees grow this close to the edge of the sea, but the briars often reach heights to rival them. Here, the patch is nearly twenty feet high.

"The tracks dissappear inside the nettles here," Shalelu whispers.

Chigaru is able to carefully pull a piece of the patch aside, revealing a tunnel of thistles within. Looking inside, you see the tunnels split into three directions.

https://i.imgur.com/HAzdWz4.png
OOC:
An amazing round, netting you 11 tokens.

The tunnel is small enough that size 0 and 1 creatures can only wiggle through by stooping over and hunkering down, effectively squeezing to move. They treat the area as Difficult Ground and subtract 1 from their Parry and any rolls that require the use of their arms or body.
Mar 31, 2025 5:27 pm
Grim starts bopping his finger at the three trails while quietly singing something, "...catch a goblin by the throat, enee, minee, miney, mo." his finger stopping at the left trail. Replacing his maul with a hand axe, "I vote left."

"Could be a tight fit, even for us mate" Wess says. More concerned with how well then can ravel in a tight space, than which way they go.
Mar 31, 2025 11:05 pm
Chigaru, the largest of the group, looks at the tunnels with skepticism. "I never thought my monk training would be useful for squeezing in goblin tunnels. I agree with going left. I hear the ocean that way and it will give us a great view even if it doesn't lead to our destination."
Apr 1, 2025 2:35 am
"Left, then," Saldrina agrees.
Apr 1, 2025 7:09 am
Khel was not that much of a tracker, so he followed the instinct and training of his fellow party members. He nodded at the directions and continued to follow the group.
Apr 1, 2025 7:27 am
You head to the west and it soon turns towards the north. Just a few yards the tunnel once again splits, but this time in two directions. East and West. You can hear and barely see some goblins to the north behind some thistles.

It's hard to make out how many, but by the sound you'd guess at around a dozen goblins. They are making too much noise to notice you so far, but you think it would hard to pass any closer without them noticing.

If you want to ambush them, we can deal with is as a Dangerous Quick Encounter.

That is you each roll one appropriate skill Stealth, Fighting, Shooting, Spellcasting, etc. Failure means you take a Wound (1d4 Wounds on a crit failure) but it can be soaked as usual. Success means you escape with Bumps & Bruises (one level of fatigue), while a raise means you escape unscathed.

If half of you or more fail, I'll narrate that one of the goblins escape or is able to raise an alarm.

Birdcruncher Goblin
In the matter of a few moments you are able to subdue and overpower the goblins who seems totally unprepared for an assault. Most don't even have time to reach for their weapons. Though a couple of goblins try to put up a fight, they soon realize it is a lost case.

"Oh woe is me," one of the goblins complains. "We have failed again. Ripnugget will toss us down the Howling Hole."
OOC:

"I Chuffy. We are birdcrunchers. What's left of us!" the goblin replies. "Chief Nine Toes died in raid on Sandpoint. We hope to be part of Thistletop goblins. But can't even take care of stupid ambushers."

"But Chuffy don't know what you want to know."
Apr 5, 2025 12:24 am
Wess continues talking to the goblin, but he doesn't put down his axe; "Well met Chuffy. We aren't looking for the answers to deep philosophical questions here. Let's keep it simple, eh? Where's your boss, and how do we stop the attacks on Sandpoint?"

He shrugs at Chigaru's question. "I am bircruncher. I not know area. Just know front door."

He leads you over to another of the "doors" and carefully opens it just enough to reveal a cliff straight down. But beyond that is a small strange island in the form of a skull. On top you can see a small fort. In front you see some goblins patrolling around it along with some goblin dogs. There is a rope bridge leading to the island further to the east.

Apr 7, 2025 4:44 pm
Khel is surprised at the sheer size of the island. He strained his eyes to look at it from their hiding spot. "An interesting but awful place to make a defensive bastion. What a weird island structure!"
Apr 7, 2025 6:33 pm
Saldrina considers the view, wondering if there is a way to get over to the fortress without being spotted.
Apr 7, 2025 8:36 pm
A bit surprised by what he sees, Grim remarks "Seems odd the news of this didn't make it's way down to Sandpoint. Still, I'm not so much worried about the goblins in a direct assault, rather the demon lady and whatever hellish minions she may have."

Replacing his hand axe with the maul, he points at Chuffy, half-serious, "Shall we start by throwing him off the cliff?"

You tie up the goblins securely and let the goblin you have been speaking to lead you to the goblin. He leads you to the west, past a hole in the ground where the sound of sloshing water echoes.

"The howling hole," the goblin explains.

From there it leads into a large cavern like chamber. Above, the thorny canopy grows thin enough that tiny slivers of the sky can be seen through it, while below, the ground consists of trampled dirt.

"From here we have to move carefully," the goblin whispers. "You have to pass the kennel to the north. Then you go..." he pauses and looks at his hands before rising his right arm. "...this way at the intersection and you'll find Gogmurt."

As Khel tosses the rock it easily fools the dogs, but they still bark enough to bring company. From behind the tangles, a goblin dressed in a tattered leather coat steps out. It's almost as if the tangles move aside to let him pass. He has a flaming sword in one hand a wand in the other.

Saldrina reacts quickly, following Khel's example. With a flick of her wrist and a single syllable, she sends a blast of air towards the goblin (spending a total of 3 points of power to amplify damage). The blast of air hits with the force of a mace wielded by a professional soldier!

A bolt flies out of Khel’s staff, hitting the ground next to the goblin.

Grimwulf rushes forward, but it is tight to fit between the thistles, he stumbles and crashes into the thistles, getting a faceful of thorns. Though not enough to pierce his toughness.

Then Saldrina sends out a bolt of light that splatters the goblin into paste. It sprays for several yards bathing Grimwulf and the first line of people with goblin innards. The one goblin that had inside information will never talk again.

Wess moves to the passage to the goblin dogs to block it should any one of them get loose.

All the goblins fights against their bindings, though only two of them is able to get loose. They rushes at Wess with angry barking (or at least what passes for barking). Though the dwarf parries them with ease.

Grimwulf rushes forward and demolishes the druid’s animal companion. The hammer hitting it over the back so hard, that it splits in two from the force.

Chigaru can barely see a few more goblin dogs through the small openings in the wall of tangles.

Once the animal companion is taken care of, the freed goblin dogs are easy to deal with. And the chained up ones are even easier.

Once the battle was over, Khel scratched his beard and looked at all the corpses. "Well, we clearly reacted with our instincts here, and whoever the goblin druid was, there won't be any way to know his secret. However, I think we can find it ourselves if we try hard enough. Maybe we can catch a Thistletop goblin and interrogate it for the secret entrance."

Spying to the north, they don't seem to have picked up on the noise. They are two squads of 2 goblins and 2 goblin dogs patrolling. Though there is hard to tell any sytem to it. They are chaotic and easily distracted. At one point the team on the front of the building starts playing fetch with the dogs. Eventually the team on the back of the keep arrives in a huff, irritated that they are taking too long and it is time to switch position.

Ironically both squads goes towards the back until they realize no one is guarding the front. The original squad returns to the front, changing nothing. A couple of minutes they grow bored and head to the back, leaving the front open. But for how long this time?
Apr 25, 2025 7:04 am
Khel scratched his beard and said, "Looks like their patrol scheme is erratic. We can lure some out to reduce their numbers or find a pattern and make for the bridge."
Apr 25, 2025 8:27 am
Chigaru nods. "And they seem none too bright and easily distracted. Maybe someone could help them along with that while the others sneak across?"
Apr 28, 2025 11:58 am
As you get closer, you realize that sneaking in while they are distracted may be harder than you first thought. You see movement in the eastern watchtower guarding the stockade's southern facade. In the western watchtower you see no sign of life.

The rope bridge is made of hairy rope and thick wooden planks; the whole thing creaks and sways in the wind above the churning surf seventy five feet below. And you are skeptical that all of you can move across it at once, possibly leaving one of you to cross at a time while avoiding the patrol and the watchtower's eye.

Though it is hard to tell, you can't inspect the rope bridge properly without risking being seen.
Apr 28, 2025 2:19 pm
Khel scratched his beard in the heat and said, "We will have to gather their attention without being. Why don't we create a distraction? Let's build a fire so that they can see the smoke. I don't have any illusion magic; unfortunately, I am very weak at it. But, we can do one thing, set one of this dog's corpses on fire and maybe throw it at the front of the bridge. I can cast feather fall to slow its descent. Maybe they will see the burning dog's corpse and send a team to investigate. We can capture one of them and interrogate it about how to find the alternate route."
Apr 28, 2025 11:06 pm
Chigaru claps Khel on the back. "That is the most convoluted plan I have ever heard," he laughs. "This hideout looks like it was chosen precisely because it is easily to defend with one entrance. It think we either take our chances crossing the bridge our climb up from the far side. If you are not skilled at illusions, what about shapechanging? A bird to fly across or perhaps into a dog for a distraction?"
Apr 29, 2025 3:00 am
"We can try backtracking where the druid and cat came from, perhaps find tracks leading to this other entrance. Otherwise, if the mages' spells can't help us, a frontal assault is a good idea as any at this point."

As he says this, Grim walks over to where the druid and his animal companion initially appeared from to see if he finds anything.

"Shalelu, you're more familiar with these parts, do your elven eyes see anything?"

It don't take a lot of effort to find the druid's lair. To the south of your current position and away from the keep. First you come to a small den that served the cougar's nest. Though following the thistle hallway deeper inside lead to another chamber in thistles.

A tangle of vines hang from the thorny ceiling of this chamber, each suspending a clattering collection of bird skulls, rib bones, teeth, and other bits of gruesome decor. In a few places the vines droop all the way to the floor. A large nest of nettles and thorny vines sits to the south, a halo of half-eaten dead birds and rats indicating that whatever sleeps there eats in its bed.

You find no other exit from the "room". Seems the druid have been staying on the outside of the keep for a long time, based on the remains.
Apr 29, 2025 12:35 pm

You find nothing of interest. You figure that most of the grisly decor is actually that, grisly decor. Khel finds a few ordinary components to add to his spell component pouch, though nothing special.

Any secret entrance would have to go extremely deep if it were to lead to an island with only one entrance point.
Apr 30, 2025 7:29 am
Chugaru nods his head as if this was expected. "It seems this goblin was exiled or perhaps left of his own will. He wouldn't want an easy way for the Thistletop goblins to reach him and vice versa. Back to square one."
May 6, 2025 2:59 am
Wess raises the two healing potions recovered from the druid. He simply says "Cheers" and he downs one, and lets it magic mend him. "Looks like there's nothing left except the direct approach. I'll head the charge, and take as many hits as I can." He downs the second potion, raises his axe, and gives a hearty laugh. "Besides if you lot do as well as you did in that last skirmish, we will be fine! If not well, see to it that this axe gets back to its owner for me.

Khel grudgingly nodded, "Well, since we don't know about any alternate route to enter, I guess frontal entry will be the best. But, we must atleast try to find a pattern to avoid most of the patrol."
May 6, 2025 3:17 pm
Nodding, "Aye, a pattern would be good, lessen the amount of arrows in Wess, if anything." with his own grin at the dwarf.
May 6, 2025 11:56 pm

Assuming you are waiting for the patrol to move to the back before rushing forward. Getting past the bridge requires 15 inches of movement. Most of you have a pace of 6 with a running die of d6 (maxing out at 12 so you can't cross in one action. The enemies can't see you until you enter the bridge (assuming you're hiding at the edge of the thistles for now). Drawing Action Cards so we can do it in order, if you want to hold your action to let someone else pass for now, let me know. Will update with order soon.

You all can act before the goblins (the goblin dogs drew well, but can't see you at all) so you can decide who will try the bridge first and who will stay back.

You can attempt a Stealth vs the goblins Perception rolled below to remain unseen (representing a moment the goblins are distracted).

Shalelu moves to the edge of the cliff and fires her bow at the remaining goblin in the tower. Though the shot goes wide, lodging the arrow in the wall far beneath where the goblin stands.

You hear the goblin has activated a bell and starts yelling "Alarm! Alarm! Longshanks at the wall!"

It raises a bow and fires an arrow at Wess. The arrow gets uncomfortably close and lodges itself into the woodwork right between Wess’ feet.

From around the corner of the keep you can hear yapping and you see a goblin rushing forward with a goblin dog chained up in front of it. Seeing you, it drops the chain and says something in goblin to the overgrown rat (for that is in fact what a goblin dog is).

The dog is 11' from the ranged people at the back of the bridge. Wess is 9' from reaching the other side (means he has to roll a 4 on his running die to make it). If you aren't able to deal with the dog by then, it will get a free attack if you rush right past. I don't think Savage Worlds movement is over if you stop and attack, though if running you do receive a -2 penalty for multiple actions.

Not quite all the way over, that would be 15' as mentioned above
As the weight of Khel adds to that of Wess and Grimwulf at the northern end of the bridge, the ropes on the left side of the rope snaps and the footing under the three of them gives out. Some planks hang onto the rightmost rope, but most plummet down to the water far below.
OOC:
This was as far as you could get.
https://i.imgur.com/at2Bizq.png

The three of you must make Athletics roll to hold on to the rope (or since you are so close to the northern edge you can land on the ground).

One rope remains, and the remaining three people can shimmy across, but it will take time as you can only move at half pace. You can do it automatically, but must roll for Athletics to hold on if you are hit by an attack.

Sorry. I missed that you moved last round. Then the bridge would have broken last round with all of you in the middle of it. As it can't take the weight of 3 size 0 creatures (and Grimwulf is big enough to count as size 0)

I will allow Feather Fall by using your action card next round (weirdly since Savage Worlds don't have reactions it has to be cast ahead of time). It would be 6d10+6 falling damage, so theoretically survivable.

Shalelu and Grim both drew jokers, netting you all two bennies. There is 12" to climb up. It takes an Athletics check to climb and you move half your pace. If you take a -2 penalty to add your running die (though you only move half of its value).

I let the goblins act, because I can't forsee Grimwulf affecting that part from his current position. Saldrina would have had to have spent her card to feather fall Grimwulf. Otherwise you can all act. And I'll just move the goblin dogs to last in initiative.

Wess became shaken from the goblin's arrow last round and must make a Spirit check or spend a bennie to act.

You don't have to spend a bennie to make the Spirit check, but if you fail the Spirit check you can spend a bennie to immediately stop being shaken. So if you spend your bennie you can act as normally. (in fact, you can do this between turns, so if you become Shaken and afraid of more attacks you can spend the bennie immediately to get rid of it).
May 13, 2025 6:12 pm

I might be confusing things, I thought I had to spend the Benny to make the Spirit check immediately (instead of waiting for my turn, and risking more attacks, like you mentioned. You're saying spending the Benny is enough to remove Shaken? So it doesn't matter that I crit failed the roll?

Saldrina and Chigaru is closing in on the edge on the other side. They are almost right above Grim who is heroically climbing the cliffside.

Another goblin meets its premature end in the face of Wess’ axe.

Khel obliterates the remaining creatures outside in a fiery blaze.

Saldrina has no choice but to target the goblin in the tower, and while she hits, it is hardy enough to resist any damage.

Grimwulf is moments away from the top when you see two more goblins show up in the western tower. You expect another volley of arrows from them, but instead they throw what looks like pickles. Not at you though, they are throwing them into the bushes.

In the eastern tower, you see the goblin is joined by a companion. "Fire at them!" the original goblin screams at him.

Meanwhile downstairs you see the front doors open, and inside are several more goblins. The goblin opening the door lets out an alarmed yelp before quickly closing the door again. You quickly spots half a dozen shapes within, some of them goblins and some dogs.

Finally the goblin in the western tower fires an arrow at Khel, having seen his fearsome display of power. It hits the wizard in the thigh. (2 wounds)

The two goblins in the western tower has a bad angle to hit Wess and Khel, so opts to fire at Chigaru and Saldrina. Saldrina is merely shaken by the arrow that graces her, Chigaru is far less lucky thoug, and he gets an arrow to the shoulder (2 wounds)

On the eastern tower they are more focused on Wess and fires an arrow each at him. The first hits right between his legs, but the second hits him, but bounces off the magical shielding provided by Saldrina.

Shalelu raises her bow, tired off missing, aims carefully on one of the goblins in the eastern tower.

The goblins inside opens the door and let loose three dogs before quickly closing the door again. The dogs rushes at the first target they can find, which is Wess.

The experienced fighter is able to dodge and parry the first two, the third one is able to pierce his defences. Luckily their bark is worse than their bite, as its jaw can’t pierce his armor.

With a shriek the last goblin in the western guard tower perishes in a burst of flame.

The door breaks inward, hanging ajar, revealing a room filled with goblins inside.

The floor of this room is hard-packed soil, as if the builders either ran out of lumber after building the walls and roof, or as if they simply never thought about building a floor. A number of poorly preserved horse and dog heads are mounted along the eastern wall, while along the southern wall hangs a pair of large black-feathered wings tacked to the wall with daggers.

The door downed gives Saldrina just the opening she needs to blast the front goblin to death.
OOC:
Grimwulf was able to get the door down so I moved Saldrina's bolt to a goblin instead. Chigaru may act based on the door being gone, and Wess can act as well.

Wess rushes inside and with a powerful slash, hits the shaken goblin in the side. It slides off his axe with a wet schlurp noise.

The goblins don’t wait long to react. One of them calls out: "Protect the king!" before rushing Wess. The other follows close behind, but Wess is ready for both of them and parries their blows.

The goblins in the tower can no longer see any of you due to the angle, so fires at Shalelu, but realizes quickly that they stand little chance of hitting at that distance.

Shalelu once again raises her bow and aims at one of the goblins in the tower.

The goblin dogs follows the goblins and swarm around Wess. With that many foes around him, Wess find it hard to parry and dodge them all. He parries the first, and that creates the opening that the second dog needs to get a bite in, shaking the fighter.

Khel starts tying up the western end of the bridge again. This time, hoping to tie it properly. Considering how Goblins work, it is hard to know if it was an intended trap or just sloppy work the first time around.
