Chapter 1: Willowdark, a Village Repressed

Jan 4, 2017 10:02 pm
Welcome to the village of Willowdark. You sit two days, as the crow flies, from the border of Markindale, on the southern coast of Lake Goldstone. You are each a member of the organized rebellious group called The Harem of Hathcocke. Your organization is led by a Brevian elven ranger by the name of Bethene Hathcocke, though her common name among the troops is The Bow in the Dark. Your reasons for joining The Harem are your own, but you are in Willowdark at the behest of Bethene. You were not told initially why you six needed to be here, nor why you were to come alone. However, come you did.

The sun sits low in the sky, turning the horizon into a swath of crimson and purple. The dying light of the day pours through an open window as a warm summer breeze carries into the small house. You six sit, cramped, around a table with Genevieve D'allarae and her family. Genevieve, as you know, is a former Haremite. She served a short time before discovering she was pregnant. The babe is now five months old and sits bouncing on her knee as her husband, Frederick, brings bowls of soup and a boule of fresh hot bread over from the stone oven.

I wish we had more information for you. We were just told to expect you and that a rider would be along shortly. It's been several days, and we've not seen the rider. If you've not received more word by tomorrow, you'll have to move along. Notter, the Collector for this area, is due through for collection. You cannot be here when he gets here. Genevieve says in a low voice, eager to not let it carry out of their hovel.

Suddenly, outside, a clatter of horse hooves clambers to a stop. Frederick darts to the door, flipping open the small viewing port and looking through. A hushed conversation and the door swings open. A hooded figure ducks in, rich black cloak tattered along the bottom and covered with the dust of the road. Two pale hands reach out, pulling the hood up and over a set of curled horns. His blood red eyes survey the group.

Farwalker Unity, reporting. I've a message for the Band. Rumor has it Notter Strugh stations members of his former street gang from Faerdringplace as lieutenants in the villages he is responsible for. Willowdark in particular has seen several deaths because of this. You few are our best plan to return control of Willowdark to the citizens. It's nicely remote, and if they can be broken free of this Collector, it's likely they'll be able to fortify from there. Please, do what you can, but don't cross Notter. He's far too dangerous for operatives with your limited experience as a group. If you are successful, make your way south to Stonewatch. A Haremite will meet you there. He looks about the group. Look. You are all relatively new to the Harem. The Bow sends along a few token gifts for all of you, nothing much. Simply a thing to show her appreciation. From his belt, he removes a small leather pouch. Tugging it open, he dumps the contents on the table in front of you. Simple silver shields, only a few inches across, etched with the faint symbol of an arrow with a tip of emerald. Use these to identify yourselves to other Haremites. Now, I need to depart quickly. Notter should be in town soon and I should be absent when he is. Best of luck and may the flames of liberty singe the flesh of the Tyrant!

With nothing else but a nod to the D'allaraes, Unity's hood is back over his head and the door closes. In moment, the horse whinnies and they are gone, leaving you in as quick a whirlwind as he arrived.

Below is a map of the village of Willowdark. It's a bit of a larger village, with a population of about 700. You are all currently in the house in the bottom row, second column from the left, of the grid of orange boxes at the bottom of the map. The largest orange box is the town hall. The red and orange section above the housing is their small market, lined with red cobblestones. The blue squares there are fountains. The gray box near the top is the jail, with a guard house and Sheriff's quarters in purple on either side. The yellow specks are a tent city where some of the villagers live. They are mostly poor, and unable to afford proper housing, so they've taken to sleeping in pitched tents where they can. Mayor Gunnardark has so far prevented Notter from removing those people from the village, but the power structure is very tenuous at the moment.

The green field at the top is simply a park, and the tan circle at the bottom is a foot-worn circle with a newly erected gallows in the middle. It used to be a common gathering area for warm weather enjoyment, but is now a desolate place where debtors pay Baron Wessex with a long drop at the end of a short rope.

With the departure of Unity, Genevieve looks to all of you. I wasn't aware we were trying to liberate Willowdark already. But perhaps Bethene is right. She's currently working closer towards Faerdringplace, she needs to build new trusted cells that can operate independently. Will you all help? She says, her eyes pleading.
Jan 7, 2017 9:39 pm
Kaio stands silently, and takes a shield from the table without hesitation. Pinning it to the sapphire border of his kimono, right above his chest, he sits again. "I will lend my aid. But I have a question." he looks around. "How do we liberate this place without crossing Notter? Is he not the root of the issue? A blade in the dark and the town is ours." he looks at the others, thinly veiled contempt on his face at the mistrust of his abilities the messenger showed.

Xaar nods. "Notter's head needs a good bashing in if you ask me. Good for morale." She strides over and grabs a pin, adding it to the many trinkets that adorn her hair.

"I think our best bet is to target his men rather than Notter himself. Give the townspeople room to build up resistance." Jean takes one of the pins and starts flipping it around in his hands.
Jan 7, 2017 10:35 pm
"Indeed," Kaio says, looking Jean's way. "So our hope is to weaken this Notter enough that he has no recourse but to leave?" His face seems to shrug, though his body does not move. "I have no desire to estrange the Bow. Though I wish our orders were otherwise, that seems the best way to proceed."

"And he won't bring twice as many men next time? That's what I'd do." She shrugs.
Jan 7, 2017 11:08 pm
"True," Kaio says, his brow furrowed slightly. "Perhaps, however, if we manage to eliminate a large contingent of his force and leave no survivors to tell the tale, we could successfully deceive him into believing we are more and stronger than we actually are. We could leave a message for him to this effect: 'this was an easy task. Bring more men, and they too will die, as will you'. Stories of a legion of warriors protecting these lands might be enough to cause the scoundrel to search for easier prey."
Jan 7, 2017 11:15 pm
Geran quietly grabs a shield, and attaches it to his belt. He leans on the wall in the corner, and carefully studies everyones voices in case he needs to impersonate them later on. He speaks up, his normal voice is a gentle baritone. While I agree that Notter needs to die, I don't think we should be brutal about it. If we are to take action, then we must do it in a way where we can represent the ideal we have fought so hard for. Brutalizing Notter will only make us look like savages. he raises his hand, his necklace glows blue, and suddenly an image of Notters face appears in front of Gerans. Why cross him when I can become him? If I can hear his voice for but a minute, and study his attire, I can put on quite the disguise. he offers a smile, Supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting. To know the enemy, we must become the enemy.
CastingMinor Illusion to create the image.

"I said nothing of brutality," Kaio says, "Besides, we were told not to cross him. I simply think that if we can trick him, that is our second best option to killing him." He turns to Geran. "Mayhap your illusion can be used to create the effect of making his troops think a far worse creature is attacking them. Then, if we leave one alive, he can run to Notter and tell his horrific tale." Again the facial shrug. "Perhaps it will be enough."
Jan 7, 2017 11:27 pm
Geran laughs, I am still an acolyte with the arcane arts, and my illusions can only reach about 5 feet. What I'm saying is we need to become the enemy. If I can disguise myself as him, I can order the guards to do anything. I can lead a squad to a trap, and we can take them out. You guys can then take their armor, and disguise yourselves as guards where we can then fully infiltrate together.
Jan 7, 2017 11:53 pm
"Or we make him to look a fool, a coward. No one would take him seriously after that."
Jan 8, 2017 12:33 am
There is a reason Notter is the Collector for nearly the entire western third of Telluria. The man is brutal. The Forest Lords slaughtered his family in their beds, and he still managed to make it out. The assassins were found hanging from his gate in Faerdringsplace, by their ankles, with acorns in their eyesockets. He razed an entire Hamlet by himself because someone dared question their tax rate. If Bethene cautions against direct action against him, she has reason. Also, he only makes his rounds here once a month or so. If he fails to report in person, to his lieutenants at any town, Wessex will send a battalion here to find out why. Genevieve offers, sipping at a spoonful of soup. Disrupting things and setting up the town to defend itself would be wise. His lieutenants are rarely that skilled. Violent? Sure. But they are a stupid lot. At least Harrald and Eldaran are. You've only a day or two to make whatever preparations you'll need. Then you should be hidden, lest he take an interest.
Jan 8, 2017 12:34 am
"Seems a sound enough plan," Kaio says, "but perhaps we should make our way to a safer haven first. Is there a forest near here?"
Jan 8, 2017 12:41 am
Not a proper forest, a few small sections of woods scattered about a few hours outside the village, to the east, nearer to the mountains. She offers.
Jan 8, 2017 1:00 am
"We should use the time we have to find out what we can about what we're up against. If we know what to expect we can pick our battles to better our chances at pulling this off."
Jan 8, 2017 1:02 am
"I agree," Kaio says, nodding. "We should pair up or go in trios and determine what we can - perhaps reunite here in a suncycle's time?"
OOC:
A suncycle is Kaio's way of saying 24 hours.

"What to expect? Expect and be prepared for anything. Move fast, have weapons ready at all times and you'll live. Doesn't seem all that tricky."
Jan 8, 2017 1:35 am
While he follows the conversation, Rixon silently eats the meal they'd been offered. He cleans his bowl with the last bite of bread and nods a thank you to Genevieve. He mutters, "Beautiful meal" as he sets the bowl back on the table.

He turns to Kaio, "A couple scouting teams... that works for me." And to Genevieve, he says, "What can you tell us of Notter's men? How many has he stationed here? And..." Rixon's lips tighten, "Is there anywhere in town we can meet? I mean, besides here. I don't want to put you or your family at any more risk than is necessary."

Only then does he take the small sigil of the Harem off the table and thread it onto a delicate chain about his neck. It can be seen coming to rest against two other small sigils before disappearing back beneath his travel-stained once-white shirt.
Jan 8, 2017 1:39 am
Kaio glances at Xana, a slight frown of disdain on his face. Erasing it, he says in a placid tone, "As much as I agree that expecting and being prepared for anything is of the utmost importance, living is not our sole objective here. If we wished only to live, we would leave right now. But we have more we wish to do, and in order to do that we must have a plan."
Jan 8, 2017 1:46 am
"We wait, we plan. Decide quickly and let's move." She stands and begins to pace. Being cooped up in this room is testing her patience (what little of it she has).
Jan 8, 2017 1:49 am
Kaio was beginning to like Xaar, but this impatience is galling him. "'The blind man who walks quickly falls into a pit.' So my master used to say." Kaio says. "While we should proceed with speed, "decide quick" solely for the sake of action is most unwise."
Jan 8, 2017 1:50 am
There's only two of his men proper here. Harrald and Eldaran. Both relatively low level thugs in his gang, from what we've been able to figure. But, in town, the only person they won't cross is the Mayor. They killed the Bluebottle lad a fortnight ago. Said he was filchin' coin from the Collector's box. Not that he was a perfectly innocent gnome, to be sure, but nothing worth killing him over! If you could somehow get rid of them, after Notter comes through - that just may buy enough time. Give us a month to prepare. The other point of concern is the guard. There's only eight of them in town, but they are all loyal to The Court. They don't care who sits atop the throne, just THAT they sit atop it. Genevieve said quietly. As if caught in a reverie, she shakes her head, coming back to the present. Meeting place wise, I appreciate your concern, I do. In town, there's not many places you could meet and attract less attention. We've told the neighbors that you're extended family of Frederick's, coming in to see a limb of family that you'd lost touch with. Notter doesn't ever venture toward the mountains though. If you made your way a few hours out that way, you could probably set up a quick camp and not be bothered by anything other than beasts.
Jan 8, 2017 1:53 am
"From the sound of it," Kaio says slowly, "We cannot act until this Notter has come and gone. For that, the woodland towards the mountains seems our best option. We can deal with beasts - perhaps the action will calm our restless friend's blood."
Jan 8, 2017 2:06 am
"Do I look blind to you?" Xaar stares Kaio down incredulously before turning her attention back to Genevieve. "Mountains. Freedom. I can take care of any beasts that dare threaten us and everyone can continue making their plans."
Jan 8, 2017 2:14 am
Kaio raises an eyebrow in disbelief at Xaar's literal interpretation of an obviously analogical saying. "Yes. You are blind. We are all 'blind' until we know more of this place," he says, trying to keep from imparting his view of Xaar's intelligence through his voice.
OOC:
Just want to make clear this is purely character roleplaying - I have nothing against Moofs xD
Jan 8, 2017 3:01 am
"I'm more of a city-dweller, myself. But, a city this is not; I could almost fit it in the palm of my hand. And if the wilderness keeps us out of Notter's crosshairs for a day, and cools Xaar's heels," Rixon shoots a disapproving look at Xaar, "it seems our best option."

Rixon gives another grateful nod to Genevieve. "My concern is that things will go poorly while we are away. I know we have direct orders to avoid Notter, but, well, it rankles. His 'collection' visits... how does it usually go down?"

"Honestly, from the sound of it, everyone would be better off if he were dead, and I'd love nothing more than to deliver that. But if he's as ruthless as you say, we'd do well to wait for a better opening. Blind, indeed."
OOC:
Appreciating the tension, myself. Also, I'm still getting used to the 'post as' function, forgive the edits.

As for the how, not like most collectors. The old collector, before Anvilard ran off on his fool's errand to fight that Demon Queen to the west, he was an alright sort. Presented you with a proper accounting, notified you of your debt, and gave you a proper time period to collect. They'd only collect once every three moons. However, since Wessex took over, it's every month they collect. Same value. Collector Tunter would always come to your home, and made the process simple. A quick tea, a simple meeting. Notter, he's cruel. He hauls everyone to the gallows area. Demands payment immediately. Uses the guard to keep everyone there while his lieutenants search the properties looking for hidden away coin. Takes more'n a day, most times. We either stand, sit, or sleep in the dirt. All huddled together. Until he's done. Then you pay. If they found hidden coin, he punishes you. If it was the second time, you hang. Then and there. Genevieve says as she quiets the baby that started to squawk. Frederick moves around the room, collecting the dishes and dumping them in the basin in the kitchen.

Edits are all good, the site takes some getting used to. :)

"Notter is as good as dead. I will have his head myself when the time is right, after we've taken his men and everything else of value from him." She gives Kaio a look of contempt as she takes out her greataxe and polishes its already gleaming surface. She's done with words. What they need now is action.

Had this been a different time, she would have admired Notter's ruthlessness. It is, after all, a great thing to be feared by lesser men. It will be a worthy match when they meet on the battlefield- there will be much glory in it!
OOC:
Couchlord- Come at me, bro! I'll mess you up!

"Ha! Unless I remove it first." Rixon offers Xaar a wink and a sly grin. He is glad to know that his recent associates have no qualms about spilling blood when it is deserved.
Jan 8, 2017 7:29 am
If you lot are so set upon death, then let us be smart about it. Plan a trap at the very least... Geran sighs, and eats his supper.
Jan 8, 2017 1:46 pm
Kaio has already finished his dinner and he pushes his plate towards Rixon. To Genieveve he nods his head in a small bow, then says "Thank you very much for this meal. It was most delicious." Turning back to the others, he stands. "It seems we have come to a decision. While putting Notter beyond this world may be our ultimate goal, all we can do for now is fantasize and we can do that just as well as we walk. We should move to the forest."
Jan 8, 2017 5:20 pm
The warlock wipes his mouth after finishing his dish, Delicious, thank you. he offers a warm smile to his host and pitches in another opinion, I'm going to stick with Kaio on this one. Our orders were to liberate the town, not get ourselves killed by Notter. His time will come, but we should focus on the task at hand.

It sounds as if you're all decided. You have a day, not much more, to gather some information and set yourselves up wherever you are going to go. With any luck, we'll see you in a few days when Notter's visit is gone. Genevieve says as she carries Helene over to her small crib in the corner, lying her down on a soft wolf pelt.
Jan 9, 2017 5:37 pm
Rixon leans from his chair and grabs his pair of scabbarded rapiers from where they had been leaning in the corner. As he stands, he slings them across his back and adjusts the leather straps across his chest.

Right, so. Two groups of three? Let's see what can be seen. And try not to leave a trail of breadcrumbs for Notter and his men to follow. They shouldn't know we're here.

Xaar would prefer not to be on Kaio's team. :-p
Jan 9, 2017 8:45 pm
"I'll lead the first group. Who's with me?"
Jan 9, 2017 8:50 pm
"I'll work with you, Xaar," Thorolf says.
Jan 9, 2017 8:51 pm
I shall head the second group if anyone wants to join me.
Jan 9, 2017 9:33 pm
Kaio will wait until everyone else has chosen their leader, seeing as he can see advantages to being on either side. He feels it may be wise to go with Xaar to keep the rowdy barbarian in check, but then he also would prefer not to have to deal with her obvious lack of intellect. He is also not opposed to sallying out on his own, which might keep suspicions from rising due specifically to someone of his odd dress being seen with people who appear to be the "normal" for this area.

I'll walk with Geran, then, to even it out. Glad to have your spells at my side, illusionist
Jan 9, 2017 9:58 pm
"I'll go along without Xaar and Thorolf." Jean pockets the shield.
Jan 9, 2017 10:12 pm
"Do I walk with Geran and Rixon, or do I go alone?" Kaio asks, standing from his seat as they prepare to go. "I would not ask, but in this situation, upon further reflection, I think it may be better if I did work alone. In such a small town my strange garb would draw attention to not only myself but also anyone else in my company. If I move alone, I may use stealth rather than asking questions. Here again, my accent would not be helpful in ascertaining information in that manner, and spies of Notter would remember a man from a far land asking questions."

I can provide you with some simpler clothes, and we have some spare light cloaks. If that makes things easier for you to decide. Frederick offers.
Jan 9, 2017 10:19 pm
Xaar nods in approval at her newly assembled crew. "A map and a direction and we'll be on our way."

"That could indeed be helpful," Kaio concedes and bows in thanks to Frederick, "But I think there could be advantage to one of our number moving stealthily rather than undercover. If I do so, I will investigate the barracks and see what I can find. But then, I also understand if you want to stick to our previous plan."
OOC:
Drama if Kaio does move alone you don't need to create a new thread, I can just post in notes in the thread of the group I will be in if I don't go alone. If that makes any sense.
Jan 9, 2017 10:21 pm
And if you are found? A man in strange clothes sneaking about might get the whole town hanged if they find your emblem. As well, consider that safety is found in numbers in a strange place. I hope to stick to the shadows, mostly, myself. And the barracks do deserve a look. But, go alone if you will.
Jan 9, 2017 10:25 pm
"If I am found, which I hope to avoid, the town can truthfully say that they knew nothing of my presence. Indeed, if I am found alone I do not cast doubt on any others and am able to act independently without worry about the safety of anyone else. I confess I work best in such situations, due to my prior occupation." He pauses a second. "The longer I think about it, the better idea it seems. Unless you feel the need of my company, I truly think it would be better if I were to go alone."
Jan 9, 2017 10:34 pm
Do you really think that a fiend like Notter would believe anyone in the town if they said they didn't know about you? He laughed when that gnome lad was hung. He made sure the boys fingers were nailed to their front door afterwards, as a reminder. If you see fit to go alone, that's fine, but it's likely unwise. Everyone in town, including Harrald and Eldarand, is already aware that you are all here and that you're 'distant relatives' of Frederick. Genevieve says, voice a bit raspy.
OOC:
As a reminder, you guys have all been in town and hanging around for about a week already. Sorry if I didn't make that part clear earlier. And no need to worry about notes or anything like that, setting up the thread is easy enough. :)
Jan 9, 2017 10:51 pm
"Indeed." Kaio thinks a moment. "I will go with you then. Frederick?" he turns to the man, "Could I borrow that cloak?"
OOC:
I had no idea. In lieu of that, sneaking around would be much too high risk to Genevieve and co.
Jan 9, 2017 11:02 pm
OOC:
Same here, that changes some things. I was assuming we were still somewhat under cover
Rixon looks pleased at Kaio's reluctant choice, I do think checking out the Barracks is worthwhile, and a good starting place for us. I'd also like to speak with the Mayor, he seems like the strongest resistance to Notter.

Rixon turns to Xaar, And what will you three get up to?
Jan 9, 2017 11:03 pm
"Let's move then," Kaio says, happy to be moving. Making a difference.
Jan 9, 2017 11:05 pm
"We head towards the mountains. See what's out there, secure a campsite. Unless either of you have better ideas?"
Jan 9, 2017 11:16 pm
Nice thinking, the mayor may have more knowledge on Notters lieutenants. Let's get going. Geran offers a thumbs up accompanied with a smile. He turns to the Barbarian, Sounds good Xaar.

Some stuff has occurred! Three of our heroes wallow in jail cells while three others have just arrived to the jail house where they received a strange welcome. Hopefully we can move together now and not get timelines all borked.
Jan 19, 2017 6:38 am
Jean steps into the room with the jail cells, carrying a ring of keys. "So I'm just gonna start with the obvious question here, you all knew this was an information-gathering mission, right? Keeping our heads down until we can have a full month to prepare for a fight rather than two days?"
Jan 19, 2017 6:41 am
We... We learned a lot. Lots of information gathered. I'd call it a success?

Maybe I was wrong about the sheriff, if he let you in here with those keys. We should leave. Tonight.
Jan 19, 2017 11:55 am
"We should not leave, we should do all we can to overcome the unfortunate turn of events that the Blade has sent our way," Kaio says determinedly. "If you would open the door, it would save me the time of having to pick the lock." He drops the manacles and moves to the door. "Then we should discuss in earnest what we should do. For it is an honest question, and one that we have little time to go over."
Jan 19, 2017 3:30 pm
"You have any ideas for what we should do?"
Jan 19, 2017 3:32 pm
I look at the imprisoned group and laugh at their expense, shaking my head before I take a seat by the door.
Jan 19, 2017 3:37 pm
"I think that somewhat depends on what's changed since we left. The sheriff said you got in a fight. Who was it with?"
Jan 19, 2017 7:32 pm
Rixon leans forward and grasps the bars of his cell, We came to the defense of that Bluebottle gent. His son was hanged some time ago for theft. Whether the son was guilty or not, the guardsman taunted him to attack then tried to kill him on the spot. It got a little out of our control when we tried to intervene… then one of the Lieutenants showed up, leaving us no option but to kill him. So we did.

I’m glad you came back. Really. I only suggest we leave so that the town can attempt to get through this collection and have the time to fortify, as we originally intended. The plan still largely holds, though I think we should try to convince our hosts to come with us, since Notter will want scapegoats.

Unless you think we can get this town fit to resist Notter and possibly whatever men he throws at us in only a couple days?
Jan 19, 2017 8:18 pm
"Might have another problem. Ran into some Markindale dwarves outside of town. Said there were others looking to fight this war of theirs. No telling if or when they'll hit this town. Could be before the collection, after, who knows. Should tell someone before we leave, if that's the best plan we've got."
Jan 19, 2017 10:34 pm
"As I said, our predicament is due to a highly unfortunate series of events. As Rixon has narrated we came to the aid of Bluebottle, whereafter I would have had us leave quietly with the bodies of the dead guards. However, my companions wished, in a noble gesture I believe, to attempt to bring Bluebottle to our side. He was in no position to respond well, and the commotion and time lost allowed for a Lieutenant to arrive. Having killed him as well before he called the guard, a large number of spectators had now arrived and the Sherriff demanded we stand down. Thinking him an honest man at least, I decided to submit myself to him. And here we are. The blame is multifaceted, but what has past cannot be changed." he shrugs. "Are you going to open the door, or no? If you won't, I will." he puts the dart tips in the lock of the door and begins to mess with them, his tongue out slightly as he gets the feel for the lock. "Either way," he says as he works, "I suggest we warn the Sherriff of the oncoming force. A crisis with our common enemies is just the sort of thing we need to evade the 'justice' we would otherwise be held to. Besides, if we tell him of this and help in a significant way, we may pay for our misdeeds. Or at least in the Sheriff's mind, allowing him to put in a good word for us before the Magistrate."

"Aye. We need to let the Sherriff know."
Jan 19, 2017 10:52 pm
You’ll get no disagreement from me there. I’m only disagreeing with the fact that this cell door is still locked. At least hand me my satchel.

Rixon takes a moment to consider, then adds, A Markindale sortie? How many? I bet they’d like to know that one of the King’s tax collectors is out on the road right at this moment. Such news may delay the Markindalefolk if they want to cause a problem for him, and may delay the Collector permanently. The enemy of my enemy, reckon?
Jan 19, 2017 11:22 pm
Jean turns to the rest of his group, holding the keys up. "Someone wanna get their stuff while I get them out of there?" He goes around unlocking each cell. "Whatever our plan is, we have two days to do it. Most likely our more pressing concern is Notter. We learn what we can in that time and hopefully come up with a plan to take him down."
Jan 19, 2017 11:30 pm
"Don't know about the others, but I don't care how you got into this situation or why you're in here. We figure out our next move." Excuses, excuses. All they do is talk! "We ran into 2 dwarves, killed one. Don't know how many others are out there. They didn't seem too well organized, but maybe the regiment sent their poorest soldiers out to scout."

Jean, I'm proposing a plan to take down Notter. I'm proposing our next move. I Think we can use the Markindale force, if there are enough of them. They'll have no love for Notter, and I can talk to them. I grew up there.

Jan 20, 2017 12:11 am
What would that plan be, Rixon?"
Jan 20, 2017 12:18 am
"They don't care where you're from, as long as we're in Telluria, we're all marked for death as far as they're concerned."
Jan 20, 2017 12:31 am
Thorolf, have you not heard a word I've said?

You don't think if we give them an opportunity to take down someone important to the Tellurian power structure they may regard us as friends? Yes, we'd have to earn their trust, somehow. But I haven't heard a better idea. I think this war is foolish, but we can use it to our own ends.
Jan 20, 2017 2:46 am
"I think it could very well be a good idea," Kaio says as he recovers his sword and other gear. "While it is true that we are marked for death while here, it is also true that pretending to be a spy for their own kind - especially if bringing such important information - would not be difficult in the least. If not Rixon, then Geran or I could also fill the role. Or a combination of us. Geran's mastery of illusion could be most helpful, and while I do not wish to proclaim my own prowess, my abilities as for reconnaissance are rather extensive. Give me a black cloak under which to cloak myself, the general idea of Notter's position and I think I could have them on his trail in little time. Besides, if they did attempt to kill me, 'twould be an easy thing to disappear amongst the chaos of their camp." he shrugs again. "When I say 'me', I speak only as a figure. Rixon or Geran could do just as well I think, their respective mastery in other areas making up for their lack of stealth."
Jan 21, 2017 12:44 am
"Rixon, that's what I'm saying. If we let someone know that they can help take the Tellurian power structure down we couldl earn their trust."
Jan 21, 2017 12:59 am
"It would be only temporary; we have no desire to gain their trust permanently, at least that I know of."
Jan 21, 2017 1:09 am
Yes, temporary only. I'm not suggesting we actually attack Telluria.

But it all fits together... Notter and the Markindalers can distract each other while the town fortifies for whatever comes next. I think we should get the Sheriff's opinion on all this, he knows the political climate far better than we do. And I'm not sure he'd be pleased to see any of the three of us,
Rixon gestures to the recently jailed trio, So. Perhaps you three can have a chat with him?
Jan 21, 2017 1:37 am

Meanwhile, Geran remains asleep, oblivious to the conversation in the conscious world.
Jan 22, 2017 2:19 pm
"I think its settled then. I suggest Thorolf should move to find the Sheriff, since he has not been charged with murder, has not been made a deputy and is not a barbarian. In his absence we can decide on a tentative plan of action, to be confirmed upon the Sheriff's arrival."
Jan 22, 2017 6:44 pm
For the most part, I'm just having you guys play out your planning. Let me know when you're set to start interacting with NPCs again. :)
Jan 23, 2017 3:12 am
That sounds good to me. I think we have a solid plan to run by the Sheriff. I'm sure the man's had about enough of us speaking on the town's behalf; let's let him have that job.

But then, do you think he'd lock us right back up?
Jan 23, 2017 4:03 am
"Not if a) he is too busy with an invasion threat and b) we do not give him the opportunity." Kaio says with a smirk. "I respect him as a warrior, however my respect does not bind me to turn myself in."
Jan 23, 2017 4:05 am
"Rixon, Jean? How are your stealthing abilities?"
Jan 23, 2017 6:18 am
"I'm alright at it, though if I am I have to leave my armor behind."
Jan 23, 2017 6:34 am
Ha, its how I made it this far; I'd say I'm adept at keeping quiet. Usually keeps me from facing this side of the law...

Rixon nods in agreement. once the sheriff weighs in, I think more will become clear
Jan 24, 2017 11:45 pm
"I think it's worth noting that even if the sheriff did technically deputize me, he also said, more or less, that it only lasts as long as I am physically in this building. So if y'all 'escape,' it isn't actually his fault. I really don't think seeking him out is the best idea, half of us would just be arrested again."
Jan 24, 2017 11:52 pm
Kaio nods, thinking. "That is a good observation. In that case, I suggest we act without his consent. But the question still stands - what will those not seeking out the Markindale contingent do?"
Jan 25, 2017 6:03 pm
I have no opinion on what they get up to, myself. Perhaps after notifying the sheriff, the camp could be scouted and set up, per original plan? Rixon says, as he shrugs the pair of swords back into place on his back, and adjusts the hood of his cloak.

What do we do about his snoring lout, too? Rixon wonders, gesturing to the slumbering Warlock.
Jan 25, 2017 7:03 pm
"I say we try and find a way out of here first off."
Jan 25, 2017 9:00 pm
"I think making camp per our original plan is a good idea," Kaio says. "As for notifying the Sheriff, we have already decided we will not do that. Besides, giving Jean the keys and making him deputy was practically letting us out. He might not give us the same grace again, however, so we should leave here as soon as possible." Kaio turns to Geran. "As for him, we should let him sleep as long as possible. He took quite a beating in our little scuffle." Turning back to the group. "As I see it, our plan stands thus - Rixon and I will move to intercept the Markindale forces. Everyone else will make for the mountains post haste to set up a camp. Does that sound correct?"
Jan 25, 2017 9:04 pm
Rixon butts in, You're not even in favor of warning the sheriff of the approaching forces? Say nothing of us, but they should be warned.
Jan 25, 2017 9:18 pm
"I agree they should be warned, but not now. After everyone is out of town, you or I may return, warn the sheriff from a distance and make good our escape. The last thing we need at this time is to be thrown in jail again. If you prefer, have one of the three who was not arrested warn him."
Jan 25, 2017 9:21 pm
I'd prefer that, yes. We may not be able to return soon enough.
Jan 25, 2017 9:25 pm
"Whatever we do, we should do it quickly," Kaio says, getting impatient.
OOC:
@Drama, how long has Geran been sleeping?
Jan 25, 2017 9:29 pm
At this point, Geran has been asleep, let's call it 2 hours. So if he wanted to roll hit die, he could as a short rest.

I'll jump back in to posting once you guys post where you are all headed.
Jan 25, 2017 9:30 pm
OOC:
Oh, OK, but no way he's getting a long rest. Good to know.
Jan 25, 2017 9:34 pm
OOC:
If you're setting up camp then wake him, and take him to camp. He can finish resting there.
Jan 25, 2017 9:36 pm
OOC:
That was my thought.
Kaio taps his shield token against the bars of Geran's cell. "Geran," he says, "wake up - time to move."
Jan 25, 2017 10:22 pm
Geran slowly wakes up, and is instantly confused at the scenario. What's going on? How--? he says grudgingly, wincing at the lesser, yet still lingering pain. He waits for a reply as he picks out the crust that already developed in his corneas, and rubs his eyes.
Jan 25, 2017 10:26 pm
"The sheriff made a slip up." Kaio says, his face straight. "He made Jean a deputy."
Jan 25, 2017 10:49 pm
Geran replies, Nice... he looks down at his special manacles, and then the cell, So uh.. Are you going to get me out, or can I go back to sleep?
Jan 25, 2017 10:50 pm
OOC:
Oh, I think Jean got you out already...
Jan 27, 2017 3:28 am
Kaio takes the keys from Jean and opens Geran's cell and manacles. "There you are - welcome back to the use of your magics," he says. "Now then. Rixon and I will find the Markindale force - which direction were they located? Jean, I would suggest you be the one to inform the sheriff of his incoming attackers, since he seems to have some respect for you. The rest of you, head for the mountains per our previous plan. Let's move." he pulls his hood up over his head and moves out into the night.
OOC:
I'm not trying to be a butt here, but seems like everyone has put all their input in since there's not been any posts for a while, so I thought I'd move it along. Feel free to retcon stuff, though! Kaio does have a pretty high view of his own decisions, so he wouldn't necessarily wait around for people's input. Hope that makes sense...

I hand Kaio the map. "This is what one of them was carrying, and this is where we encountered the two dwarves. Where they are now, only the moon and stars know." I point at the spot on the map where the body fell.
Jan 27, 2017 4:33 am
The map shows a tick mark over Willowdark, and a dotted line some 15 miles outside of the village.
Jan 27, 2017 3:09 pm

"Not fake, I suppose," Kaio says. "I think we should attempt to talk to them, but what story do we tell? Do we tell the truth, or do we tell them that we are from Markindale ourselves, sent as spies?"
Feb 24, 2017 6:30 am
I suppose it is not fake, no. Hm. They're so quiet. I've never seen anything like this.

I think we stick to the truth, honestly. We hate who's in charge of this country too... that devil that took over is horrific. And we know where one of his higher-ups is, or at least what direction. We know we're under-qualified to deal with him, and want to see if this group was up to the challenge. I'm from Markindale, myself, so I'm hoping that will endear us to them somewhat.

The unknown is, will they let us go once we give them our message. I... I doubt it.

Rixon nods to the Elf as he begins making his way towards the indicated command tent.Kind of you.

It had been a long time since he'd seen Markindale-issued gear up close. Rixon's lips tighten as he forces himself to look away from the armor. He instead looks up to the faces of the men before him, Edwin, Muldinvane, I presume? I'm Rixon. This is Kaio.

Since 3 days have gone by without a post, I'm going to progress us a bit. Feel free to retcon any teary reunions before advancing if you'd like.
At the campsite, the remaining two bandits give up their arms and armor and run off with nary but their linens on. They provide no other useful information.

Some two hours after your fight, Kaio and Rixon make their way into your camp lugging a small chest with them. You bunker down for the night and after a restful night in the wood, you awaken to birdsong and a warm summer morning.
Mar 16, 2017 1:38 am
Kaio breathes in the warm air of the morning, relishing the peaceful sounds around him. Rising from his meditative position, he walks out from their cave to have a look around. His eyes are especially trained in the direction of Willowdark, looking for any signs of abnormality.
Mar 16, 2017 1:41 am
Thorolf soon wakes up from the camp, getting dressed in his clothing as well as donning the armor he has. He soon starts to eat one of his rations for breakfast.
Mar 16, 2017 2:51 am
I awaken, roll over and within moments have my weapons ready. Without anything better to do, I set my sights on tracking and killing any wild game that may be in the vicinity.

Rixon awakes, legs still sore from the seemingly endless walking. He fills the others in on his trek with Kaio, and that the plan they'd hatched in the jailhouse might actually be enacted.

We do have a day to kill, I think, based on what the townsfolk knew of Notter's arrival time.
Mar 17, 2017 4:51 pm
Xaar finds a few squirrels and a rabbit, easily snagging them for sustenance. Additionally, there is a small berry bush that she knows has berries they can consume.
Mar 20, 2017 6:53 am
Anyone have thoughts to offer?

We could of course go watch from afar. The Markindale assault on Notter would be interesting, if it plays out.
Mar 20, 2017 11:06 am
"Indeed," Kaio says simply, not one for conversation after his meditation as a general rule.
Mar 21, 2017 3:17 am
I grab large handfuls of berries and chow down while preparing the small rodents for eating. "Could be, if we had eyes on Notter. Who's to say those Markindale folks won't hit before he gets here or after he leaves."

Magical DM Handwavy Time Magics!

You spend the next three days in the woods, careful to not attract any attention from any errant passersby. You generally enjoy each other's company and take the opportunity to get to know one another a bit better with no pressure. Xaar is easily able to help supply you with food from the bounty of the land.

As the sun rises on the morning of the fourth day, you all make your way back to Willowdark. The first thing you notice is the tents of the squad that Kaio and Rixon found pitched outside the village. When you get into town, you notice that the general attitude is far happier. The gallows are still there, but with three bodies hanging, several days dead. You head to the tavern, and see Genevieve standing out front, talking happily with her husband. She smiles and waves at you. Running up, little girl in her arms, she greets you.

Welcome back! I'm not sure how you did it, or why they did it, but I'm positive these Markindale folks are your doing. They rode into town not more than two hours after Notter and his thugs rode in. Just as he was setting into the poor Sheriff for losing the person that killed his lieutenant, those golems of theirs marched in and took order. All they did was deal with Notter, his other lieutenant, and the rest of the tax collector retinue. You may want to talk with Edwin and Muldinvane to figure out what the current situation is. You may have worsened the war effort with Markindale, but you've certainly improved our lives here. You have our thanks.

Everyone, you are now level 3! Yes, we are skipping 2. You would have leveled to level 2 anyway, but you've effectively dealt with Notter as well, so you're getting that ping as well. We'll take some time for you to level up and do some RP here before we start Chapter 2! I'll make a leveling thread for HP rolls.
Mar 22, 2017 9:18 pm
Having rested up for the past few days, Geran devoted time to training. Because of his actions, his patron granted him further power. Geran performed a ritual, and now he has a familiar whom he is connected with. A quasit named Bojangles now rests on the shoulder of his master. The Warlock learned some new spells, and figured how to cast his own spells with a more excellent strength than before. Best of all, Geran figured out how to disguise himself at will without exhausting his arcane ability, or disguise kits. I feel more ready to continue our great work than ever before! My friends, I believe I can assist in so much more ways than ever before. he has a bright smile beaming off his face.
Mar 22, 2017 9:32 pm
To Genevieve, Rixon says, Perhaps the war will be affected, sure. But I’m confident it was the right thing to do. I feel such a strong connection to The Other, now. Again, I’m sorry for our actions a few days ago but I was thinking of you and your family.

Tell me, what next for the Harem?

Kaio has spent the last several days training with Rixon in the use of one-handed weapons. This training, combined with his prior knowledge of the shortsword and some study he had begun earlier among the Kensei, allowed Kaio to gain mastery of the longsword, and rapier. He also perfected his knowledge of the longbow, allowing him to incorporate all three of these martial weapons into his martial arts.
-------------
"We are glad to have accomplished our duty," Kaio says with a formal bow to Genevieve. "I too wish to apologize for the trouble your family was nearly landed in because of our actions. Though we acted with good intentions, we should have thought first of the danger we were putting you in." Kaio does wish to talk to Edwin and Muldinvane, but waits a moment to hear her answer to Rixon's question concerning the Harem before moving off. "Where might I find Edwin and Muldivane?" he asks after she replies.
Mar 22, 2017 10:52 pm
Thorolf has been training in his archery skills lately, along with his one-handed weapon skills. He turns to Genevieve. "I'm glad to help."
Mar 23, 2017 12:51 am
We only sent word out yesterday, when the Markindale contingent finished with Notter and company. It'll be close to a week, if not a full ten day, before we can expect a reasonable reply. To be sure, she wasn't expecting you to accomplish this much this way. Feel free to stay here, you're welcome to our home, or many of the others in town. Perhaps speak with the mayor if you want to arrange something more permanent. she says, beaming. I'm sure there is work available in town for capable sorts like you, or the Markindale group may have some thoughts. Edwin and Muldinvane, they are likely at the jailhouse with the Sheriff. They've been closeted in some fierce discussions about defensive measures the village can take now that we're out from under Notter's thumb. We know another Collector will be assigned when Notter fails to report to the next place, but we have a few months before we see the outcome of that.
Mar 23, 2017 1:03 am
Kaio will bow his thanks to Genevieve, then head towards the jailhouse with speed. Upon arriving, he will enter and look around.
Mar 23, 2017 1:09 am
Very good. Thank you kindly. Three people I urgently need to speak with, all in the same place... Can't pass that up, Rixon says, with a thin but cheerful smile.

Rixon goes with Kaio, hoping to catch all three gentlemen.
Mar 23, 2017 4:59 pm
Jean spends some time alone, refreshing his knowledge on combat strategy, before meeting up with the rest of his team.
Mar 23, 2017 8:10 pm
I must apologize as well for my recklessness. I usually am one to pursue a more strategic and safe means of solutions. If there's anything you need, just let me know. he smiles. He then turns to his companions, Off to see the Sheriff then? suddenly Geran turns into the Sheriff in the blink of an eye, and he speaks in the mans voice What do you need eh? Obviously I'm the man you're looking for? he chuckles.
