Episode 1: Chasin' the Wind

Jan 15, 2017 10:16 pm
What a surprise. It’s snowing in Chicago in January. As the wind howls outside, you thank the runner gods that you’re in a nice warm pub or, even better, in a nice warm bed, and not somewhere running around the Containment Zone for a fstful of nuyen or whatever barter you’d have to scrounge.

Then your commlink flashes the icon of your fixer, Ophelia. "Catch you at a bad time?"

Then again, it is nice to make a living.

Ophelia goes on. "It’s strange. No sooner does the new mayor announce the reclamation program that the biz starts lining up. I got a job for you, omae, headed into the CZ. Johnson would like to meet in person in two hours. There’s a table reserved at Chicago’s Own Pizzeria in Northside. Watch the slip-n-slide out there, chummer."
OOC:
I started a little earlier than planned. Feel free to introduce your home and how you get ready for a mission. What do you bring with you on a meet and greet with a potential employer.
Jan 15, 2017 11:48 pm
Shivering, Puck puts down her commlink. The brutal winters are especially heinous when all you have to your name is a drafty camper and whatever goodwill you can trick people out of. Taking one last long sip of her steaming hot tea, she puts the mug down, missing the warmth as soon as she lets go.

well, time to look the part. At least the meets is somewhere a hell of a lot warmer.

Puck rifles through the small wardrobe of the camper and picks out something fashionable but also warm. After adding on a few layers of thermals and her armored coat she can almost feel her extremities. After checking herself in the mirror and feeling satisfied she sends a message to Bill, a cab driver she befriended not too long after "moving" to chicago.

Hey Bill. yeah, it's me. look, I need a ride to Northside. How soon can you pick me up? oh, that's great! I'll be sure to give you something 'extra special' since it's such short notice. Just honk when you get here.

Strapping on her pistol, Puck realizes she should probably bring a little more firepower... just in case... So she clears out a spot on her dinette table (the tea is already ice cold when she touches it) and lights some incense and calls out to the spirits.
OOC:

OOC:
Shamantic code of honor= when I summon spirits, I also do tasks for them, such as collect things or wear tokens. spirit's choice.
Feeling the spirit that answered her call like an old familiar friend, she snaps back to reality when she heard the cabbie honking. looking around her RV quickly, she grabs a small can of sage from her pantry and quickly spoons a couple of teaspoons into a small plastic baggie. She leaves, locking the camper door behind her and directly into the heated interior of Bill's cab. Bill is already driving out of the trailer park before he asks where he's taking her.

Pizza place. I'll point it out when we get there.

Pulling the baggie out of her coat she presents it to him with a small flourish

And THIS, my friend, if the special something I mentioned. This is sage. powerful sage. Blessed by a Lakota warchief on his deathbed. You burn this inside a building, and every hostile spirit and malign spell placed on you clears right out. My tribe would use this before a major undertaking. We even gave a pinch of this stuff to Coyote before he did his Great Ghost Dance, and you know how that turned out. My gift to you for being such a great friend. I'd say that this would make us about even for the ride.

Once at the pizza place, Puck places her trode headband on and plugs it into her commlink. She steps outside of the cab and starts buzzing her team

ok, I'm here. anyone else make it here yet?

Ghost exchanges a glance and a nod with her friend, who is currently going by "Widget". She silently gathers her gear. Its just a meet, so she'll travel light: knives, sap, taser, and dart pistol, all hidden under her big black duster. The last step is applying her face: foundation, pencil in the eyebrows, a bit of blush...all to look a little more human. The she pulls up her ubiquitous hood and asks, "Your car or the van?"
Jan 17, 2017 11:12 am
Digit rubs her at her eyes as the commlink disconnects, letting out a slow, loud yawn. She stretches her arms above her head, groaning as she switches to AR with a twist of her hand. She surfs the Matrix for a time, checking any recent news, as well as waving away a few ARO pop-ups alerting her to sales on green hair dye. After fully waking, the gnome swings her legs off of the small bed and gets to her feet. Her sleep schedule has been a mess lately, something that she was prone to do when spending too much time jacked into her 'deck. There was something to fix that, though.

Being one to invest her nuyen wisely, Digit's apartment was rather quality; about as much as one can get in Chicago nowadays. Her high-rise was near O'Hare Airport, just outside of the occupation zone that Ares had set up around it. A bit pricey, sure, but with all the furnishings, the vehicle space in the garages below, and most importantly access to Ares' Global Grid, it was well worth the cost. Of course, it helped that she had a roommate, too.

Digit makes sure her commlink is broadcasting the right SIN. It always was, but she had a certain level of paranoia that made her check and recheck every time she thought about it. She tends to switch them around so often, it's best to make sure to know what your name is for the day. Digit hooks her survival knife onto her belt and tucks her cyberdeck into its protective sleeve and then into her backpack before shrugging it up onto her shoulders. Her datajack cord is slipped through a pocket in the backpack and hooked into her 'deck already, giving her access to all of the bothersome AROs that Ares assaults her with while on their Grid. She dismisses them from her field of view with only a thought. Lastly, Digit heads to the kitchen and pulls open one of the drawers. Within is a disorderly stack of Meta Link commlinks, all turned off. Digit grabs two of them to take with her.

Moments later, the gnome pops the caps down on her two disposable travel cups, steaming soykaf filled to the brim inside. She carries the cups toward the door, just as Ghost is coming out of her room and pulling up her hood. When asked about transportation, Digit smiles back and says, "Lets take yours." She hands one of the cups over to Ghost as she says offhandedly, "I'm on Isla today, by the way." Of course Digit is talking about her fake SIN, to make sure she and Ghost were on the same page. Then, as a thought comes to her, she adds, "Oh! And I decided to stick with Digit for one more Run, too. I'll change it next time. Probably."

She'll follow Ghost through the levels of the building and down the elevator, sipping her soykaf and swimming through the Matrix in her mind at the same time. Once in the garage and getting settled in Ghost's ride, an ARO for Puck's message pops up, and with a thought Digit accesses it to hear the message. She smiles brightly, excited that she'll see the Elf again; Puck was one of her favorite Runners she's worked with, after all. She sends a message in reply to Puck at the speed of thought:

Took me a minute to wake up. We're almost there, omae.

It was no secret that she and Ghost were roommates, or at least lived close by enough to carpool, since they were always arriving in the same vehicle. Luckily they didn't live far from the meet, so this drive wouldn't take long at all. "Going to slave your comm," Digit mentioned, grabbing up Ghost's commlink in her cyberdeck's PAN should Ghost not be opposed to her doing so.

Rush gasps for air, as he's woken from a deep, nearly dead, sleep. Loud bangs puncture the peaceful silence of his slumber. Gunshots? Rush throws the blanket off, unsealing the warm cocoon of his bed, and creeps toward the one window in his apartment that isn't boarded up. He slowly lifts two fingers to the blinds and gently separates them ever so slightly. He sees nothing out of the ordinary from his fourth story studio. The usual dealers on the corner. A couple of young kids poking fresh road kill with a stick. Old homeless Dwarves yelling at the boxes they sleep on. Nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe it was a truck backfiring. Rush backs away from the window, half relieved, half disappointed.

Rush clicks a button on his soykaf machine and notices a message on his comm. Alright Ophie old girl. He smiles deeply. Rush forages through the piles of clothing on his floor, and eventually finds a dark blue jumpsuit. Ah-ha! He slips it on and kneels beside his bed, sticking a hand underneath the box spring, and removing a machine pistol. He examines the pistol, makes sure it's loaded, and attaches a silencer to it. He stands and deposits it in a concealable holster in the jumpsuit. He pulls on a blue hoodie, over the jumpsuit and laces up his shoes. He does a few stretches, cracks his knuckles, and pops in some headphones. He shuffles through his music collection, finds the funkiest jam he can, and hits play. He bops and dances as he removes the multitude of locks on his front door, and begins to close it behind him. Right before the door shuts, he reaches through and grabs a set of mirrorshades from a table by the door, and dons them. He moonwalks out of the apartment and seals it shut before walking downstairs.

Rush puts his hood up, and walks briskly to the El. As he enters the train, he checks his comm, and sees a message from Puck. He responds. "On my way, chummer. Be there soon."

There are no AR ads, but Chicago’s Own doesn’t really need them. The smell of traditional Chicago-style crust and real meat lures you from blocks away into a pizza-lover’s dream: the last real Chicago pizza place. Chicago’s Own is a century-old restaurant, but a few additions have been put in place over the years, like bars over the windows, barricaded windows upstairs, and razorwire over the top. The place is literally brick-and-mortar, with a few scorch marks
across one side.

When you arrive, you find the table reserved for you, and Ms. Johnson is already there. She is an Hispanic human female in her mid-fifties, dressed in runner style with an armored jacket, dark fatigues, and boots. Her right temple sports two chrome datajacks, and she examines you through obvious cybereyes, deep violet with golden atom symbols in place of pupils.

"Thank you for meeting with me. Some of you might know me as Quantum Princess. I have a short job for you. Two Matrix signal repeaters in the CZ are showing signs of failing, and I need you to replace a module in each. I’m offering 4,000 nuyen for the job."
Jan 18, 2017 9:19 pm
Puck settles into her seat comfortable and gives a little grin as the Johnson immediately jumps to business.

cutting right to the chase, I like that. However, going into the CZ isn't exactly a walk in the park, and 4 grand each seems like a pretty bare bones price. I think my team would appreciate a little more nuyen if we're putting our hoops on the line for signal repeaters. And I am assuming you will be providing the hardware for the job as well, yes?

Digit immediately begins complaining about being hungry when she steps into the pizzeria. She happily breathes in the delightful smell of fresh pizza with an excited look on her face. She pulls out a chair and hops in, putting on her best listening face when the Ms. Johnson starts speaking. Of course it was only a face, as her mind was distracted by AR, pouring through streams of data as she tried to search whatever she could on "Quantum Princess," or those very unique eyes, to find out what she could about their would-be employer.

When she has a moment, Digit sends a quick message to Puck's commlink:

I brought a burner with me that we can use in case she needs to get in touch with us. Commcode 6794049932.

She turns her attention back to Puck. "I am sure we can come to an agreement as to price. While the CZ is a wild place, I don’t expect this to lead to any trouble. Besides, do a good job, and I might have more for you. But hopefully you'll accept 4500 each."

oh, I prefer to eat after biz is finished. 4500 with the possibility of more after the job seems reasonable. After 1500 up front, of course. What exactly would be the details of this job? where are we installing the hardware? what kinds of trouble do you anticipate we'll have? how deep into the CZ are we talking? I hope you don't mind the questions, I'm just looking out for my team's well-being. You understand, I'm sure.
Jan 19, 2017 7:54 pm
"Agreed," she says sliding a certified credstick across the table.

Quantum Princess makes an AR map of Chicago show up on the table. "The first one is here," she says as the map zooms down on what you recognize as Midway Airport, located about three kilometers inside the Containment Zone.

"The second one is in Garfield Park," she says and with a quick motion the map moves to show the second location, just off of I-290, about six kilometers inside the CZ and only about four kilometers from the outer rim of the Cermak fallout zone.

She takes a small grey messenger bag from underneath her chair and hands it off to you. "The modules are inside."

while the exchange is going on, Puck sends a message to Digit via comm

I assume you guys brought the van? if so, go ahead and put the pizzas in there, the smell is distracting. Find any info on our Johnson yet?

As the team Face, Puck doesn't just butter up and fast talk Johnsons. she needs to know her team and their abilities. Digit was a hell of a Decker, but if left to wait too long her fidgeting could get distracting. best to give her something to do while she works her digital mojo. Besides, if the Johnson sees Puck stare hungrily at those pizzas, she might lower the price. Hungry runners are desperate runners, and there's no way in hell that Puck is going to let her empty stomach betray the team.
Jan 20, 2017 7:10 am
Utterly oblivious to Puck's true intentions, Digit slides out of her seat and collects the pizzas. She takes a moment to get a long, satisfying whiff of the melted cheese and tasty toppings before hurrying along to the van. She'll return Puck's message:

No, not yet. :( Trying! This Jay is rad, though, getting us pizza and all. Usually they just try to get us dusted.
Jan 20, 2017 9:02 am

"Definitely need to meet back up after stopping off at home," Digit says, already with a slice of pizza by the time everyone else comes out to the van, "There's so much that I don't bring to meet the Jay, with good reason!"

She climbs inside, sitting down into the passenger seat of Ghost's van. Her words transmit into the commlinks of those not within earshot, "Did some digging on Princess Johnson." She grins for those who can see her, though her smile translates well into her cocky tone, "She tried to cover her tracks a bit, of course. Let's see.. Chicago native, specifically growing up in the CZ. Ex-Runner, retired now. Not pulling up any memorable jobs, though. She does some job-fixing on the side, too, so it might behoove us to make a nice and shiny impression." Digit takes a bite of her pizza, cutting out of the comms for a moment as she chews happily. She comes back in and adds, "She does some underworld-level mediation, too. People seem to like her, as far as I can find, so that's promising."

Jan 22, 2017 9:55 am
"Am I really the only one that didn't bring everything?" Digit says with a frown, "Drek, sorry, usually we get some prep time."

As soon as she's able to get back to her apartment, Digit will collect her other belongings into a duffel bag as quickly as possible and load them into the van, securing a few items onto her person. Such items include her silenced machine pistol, over a dozen clips of ammo, a gas mask, various chempatches, a small medkit, restraints, a tag eraser and a signal jammer. The serious expression on her face gives the impression that she feels she is in no way overdoing it. The serious expression is replaced by a design of a yellow, wide-eyed smiley with a small blood-splattered cheek when she pulls her ballistic mask down over her face and exclaims, "Ready!"
Jan 22, 2017 10:12 am
You give it about an hour to get your equipment ready before you meet back up.

As you travel you realize why they call Chicago the Windy City. The wind blasts your vehicle every minute or so, and even when it’s not gusting you can still feel the constant movement of air. The snow is still falling, being blown about, and in general piling up where it most easily gets in the way. The best part about the snow is that there’s enough on the ground to fill in most of the potholes, but that’s little comfort because it means you’re driving on ice as much as pavement.

From blocks away you can see the CZ wall, a two-story barricade of rubble topped with razorwire. It’s not so much a wall as the ruins of entire city blocks that were leveled to provide building materials. Guard towers stick out of the wall every hundred meters or so, watching into the CZ. The gates hang partway open, and the guard towers are dark, a sign of the reopening of the Zone. If you thought the civilized parts of Chicago were run down, inside the wall gives a bad name to war zones. Occasionally, what passes for a road ends in an overturned skyscraper, a testament to the lack of maintenance and the wholesale destruction that seem commonplace inside the Zone.

Nearing the wall you need to make a decision as to which module to fix first. Midway Airport or Garfield Park.
OOC:
Anyone piloting a vehicle should make a Vehicle Skill + Reaction [Handling] (1) Test to avoid crashing; apply the Moderate Rain visibility modifier (–3) to the test for the snow and another –2 penalty if the vehicle is moving faster than its walking speed. Note that the visibility modifier also applies to any attack tests outdoors, as does the Moderate Wind modifier (–3), unless the runner has some means of compensating (such as ultrasound or thermographic vision for visibility and/or a smartlink for the wind).

This scene includes a Rating 3 Static Zone, due to the crumbling infrastructure and heavy snow. For rules on Matrix Noise, see p. 230, SR5.

As the van nears the CZ, Digit unbuckles and crawls back to one of the empty rows of seats. She buckles in once more, but then shifts until she's lying down across the row. She's left her meat enough times to know she needs to be buckled in but with her head down. With a few mental keystrokes her mind goes off into cold-sim VR as her physical form goes limp. Satisfied that her deck is still running silent, she immediately broadcasts a voice message to her team:

"I'm going to see if I can find anything of interest around here. Oh, and if you want me to cover your wireless gear, you need to give me permissions. I can cover, um... my deck should be able to handle about eight more things, besides my 'jack."

Digit takes a moment to set things up before she tries anything illegal. First she grid hops over to the Ares Global Grid to suffocate some of the public grid noise. Then she dresses her icons accordingly to make them look casual and simplistic, and her persona changes into a yellow, large-headed, big-eyed caterpillar. She shifts her programs around but remains satisfied with the current deck configuration as she takes a gander at the wireless world around her.

OOC:
You are able to figure out the general direction of the signal repeaters. They are on the CZ Grid. Don’t seem to be any corporate interest involved. Otherwise the drive reveals little, you can see the occasional icon inside the deplorable buildings. But anyone still staying in the part of town either can’t afford comlinks or are probably hiding from someone.

Finding the exact location requires a Computer + Intuition [Dataprocessing] (6, 1 Complex action) Extended test.

You know the Airport has four runways at around 1200 meters long so it could take time to be within 100 meters of it. Same with the park, it's around 0,74 km^2.
Jan 23, 2017 10:48 am
"Ghost, Symbi, fastest way to the airport is 43 south, then hop off onto the Archer exit. From here, Garfield Park is only a little further away than the airport, but if you want that then stay on this road a ways and then take 50 north to Lake street. Otherwise they're basically on opposite sides of the Interstate. Probably going to take twenty... twenty-five minutes, or so, to go from one to the other."

Digit takes a moment to hop over the CZ Grid to avoid any interference there, attempting to see if she can narrow her search parameters in order to pinpoint the signal repeaters' locations.
OOC:
Edit: So 3 complex actions, 3 rounds, or 9 seconds to succeed, right? Do I find both with that extended action, or do I need to do the same for the other one? If that's the case, this one will have been for Midway Airport.

Ghost clicks to the group channel. "Which one first?"
Jan 24, 2017 3:04 am
my vote is for the tower. It's closer and we can get a good vantage point to scout out the surrounding area and the area around the second one.
Jan 24, 2017 8:03 am
"Tower sounds good to me! Going to see if I can get a view inside the airport, or up in the tower itself."
Jan 24, 2017 9:22 am
OOC:
To save time, I will use your Matrix Perception from earlier. I'm at work right now, and can't check the rules, but I do belive you only notice how many silent icons there are. You can notice 10 in the vicinity of the tower.
Jan 24, 2017 9:27 am
OOC:
Here's what I was able to dig up, rules-wise:

If you're trying to spot an icon that is farther than 100 meters away, this is a Simple Test: the first hit lets you spot the target and any additional hits can be used to get more information about it as mentioned above. If you're looking for an icon that is running silent (after you've determined that it's present) the test becomes an Opposed Test, with the target defending with Logic + Sleaze. Net hits are used just like you would for spotting distance targets, with the first one for spotting the target and the rest for analysis.
Jan 24, 2017 9:50 am
Ghost nods and steers the van toward the airport, again driving slowly and cautiously.
Jan 24, 2017 11:01 am
"When we get closer I can pop out my drone and scout around the place. Hopefully spotting any squatters or trouble lurking about." Symbiote relays over the comm. He follows Ghost going slow and easy.
Jan 24, 2017 6:59 pm
Officially, Midway Airport has been shut down for years because it fell inside the Containment Zone. These days, its pock-marked runways still prevent any air travel other than VTOL flights, and mostly it’s business of the illegitimate kind that runs through Midway. The snow appears to have shut down the airport; a few building lights are on, but aside from the wind there’s an eerie silence that tells you that there are no flights today.

You stop too far away to see the tower clearly, but it looks dark.
OOC:
I think I found the rule I was thinking of on page SR235. "If you are trying to find an icon that's running silent the first thing you need to do is have some idea that a hidden icon is out there. You can do this with a hit from a Matrix Perception test; asking if there are icons running silent in the vicinity can be a piece of information you learn with a hit.

Once you know a silent running icon is in the vicinity, the next step is to actually find it. This is done through an Opposed Computer + Inuition [Data Processing] vs Logic + Sleaze Test. Note that if there are multiple silent running icons you have to pick randomly which one you're going to look at through the Opposed Test. So you know there are something running silent, but you have to make a new roll to discover what (or possibly several)
Jan 24, 2017 7:54 pm
"The tower sounds good to me. Just tell me what to do and when to do it."
Jan 24, 2017 9:06 pm
Digit does her best to acquire all of the information she can about what may be within the airport.

Picking up ten devices around the tower. Hoping to find a camera or something, but it could also be something else. I can stay in the van and support from here, unless you want me to come along.

She flips her deck to use its Virtual Memory program, freeing up some extra space to boot up her Fork program as well.
OOC:
Digit is using Fork to use Matrix Perception on two targets at once, using the same roll against both. Any negative/positive modifiers to the roll are added from both targets, but the results of the action are determined separately.

So I had this post up a second ago, but I made 5 rolls of 9d10s, instead of 9d6s, because apparently I forgot what game I was playing, so I deleted it to avoid 10 spammy rolls

Edit: My limit for these rolls is 8.

Digit comes back in over the team comms:

Picking up some guns and commlinks around the tower. Two AKs, two Browning Ultra-Powers, and a big Enfield AS-7 liquidizer. A couple things that I can't figure out, either. Could be more guns, or more commlinks, cause I'm only picking up two at the moment, and that's a lot of firepower for only two goons.

"Checkin' their guns and tech for anything I can peek through. Unfortunately no working security cameras in the tower. At least not wireless ones that I can see. If I find anything, I can toss it up on the AR for you.

There's a pause before she comes back and says:

"Hey, so, are we sure we know what these modules even do? I mean, I don't know if we particularly care but these new modules might not be fixing the signal repeaters. Halaron, you are able to spot two men huddling outside the tower. They are looking down on the ground, their feet shuffling back and forth, probably from the cold. They are both holding AK-97 rifles. You also notice a sidearm on both of them. They seem to have different brand of clothes and nothing that looks like uniforms. If they have noticed your drone, they are playing it extremely cool.

Digit comes back over the comms:

I'd prefer that, for sure. I can figure out their commcode and we could give them a call on the burner. It's in my left jacket pocket if someone wants to grab it. It'd blow our chance of surprising them if they don't go for it, though.
Jan 27, 2017 2:34 am
suddenly hacking their comms and talking to them might get their guard up. I can talk to them as long as you guys stick close in case there's any trouble. how does that sound?
Jan 27, 2017 6:52 am
"There'd be nothing sudden about it, nor anything to do with hacking, and certainly less surprising than just stepping up on them. You'd just give them a call on the commlink and they'd, presumably, pick up and answer. Keeps you out of danger, Puck."

Digit sounds worried this time.
OOC:
On pg. 235 under the Matrix Perception side-bar it mentions that net successes on Matrix Perception tests can tell me a number of things including: "The target's commode." I assume that was a typo and that they meant "The target's commcode," but maybe I'm wrong?

You wait for a grueling 50 minutes while Halaron works. You can notice the guards becoming more and more antsy as time passes. By the time Halaron lets the rest of you know he’s finished you let out a sigh of relief.

The guards are just as observant as you make your way out, but seems determined to let you go without any more hassle.

About this time Digit gets a hit on his matrix search. He’s unable to find anything on the guy in charge, with the snowy interference as well as their hoods it’s hard enough as it is. Luckily with the name Jeong you are able to find a Jeong-Ho that could fit to the description. A small time smuggler that has done a little time a few years back.

"Wiz!" Ophelia’s face appears in the display. "I’ve been trying to get hold of you. Looks like the work’s gonna flow today. I have another Johnson on the line. He, ah, insisted on holding for you."

Your fixer’s face is replaced by what can only be described as a human-sized dragon, decked out in neo-Brit anarchist wannabe threads and sporting at least twenty individual pieces of flair from concerts around the globe. Your mind almost fills in the lizard-hiss as he speaks.

"Hoi, bloke! I’m Simon Andrews. Master Lofwyr would like to employ your services for a data retrieval. You see, we lost track of one of our laboratories in the recent mess. You’re to check out the lab, secure its contents, and retrieve a data packet from its node. I’m authorized to pay you each 3,000 nuyen for the job. Good deal for a few hours work, yeah?"

Jan 31, 2017 7:29 pm
"Sure, mate," Simon answers. "I'll take dedication to a job as positive trait. But if you could do it tonight it would be blinding."

"The target is a place called Janus Industries, located at 1501 N. Greenview Ave. It is just off of Interstate 90, just inside the northern edge of the Noose."
Jan 31, 2017 7:39 pm

What’s left of Interstate 290 is a craterous mess. The highway hasn’t been maintained in two decades, so it’s a wonder the roads are even drivable. Oddly, the packed snow and ice help, but it’s a little like learning to play hockey for the first time.

When you arrive at Garfield Park, you find an overgrown series of playgrounds and picnic shelters surrounding a wooded area that’s too small to be called a forest and too large to be called a grove. But you don’t see a transmission node anywhere. Ah, suburbia.

Following Digit’s direction leads to a tree, and for a moment you wonder if he has done you astray until a closer check reveals the tree to be fake. You find a small hatch that is probably housing the signal repeater, but it’s locked behind a maglock keypad.

20 minutes into fixing the signar repeater you hear sparking, moments later Halaron takes a step back as smoke rises from the repeater.

A quick check confirms that nothing is damaged beyond repair, but one of the backup batteries shorted out. You have to be more careful going forward.

You want to be done with this quickly, as you can really start to feel the biting cold.

You can keep going, but at -2 to your roll, since you don't want another short out. You are at 4 hits right now. Also give me a Willpower + Agility to see how the cold affects your performance. Doing any sort of manual work in subzero temperature for extended period of time can be hard :)

The video flashes, and the picture on the other end becomes that of a mid-sized troll with dark skin, clearly Aztlaner by the looks of him. He’s in a suit, but he wears an Aztec neckpiece in place of the tie. He wears his dark hair in a long ponytail. "Hola, amigo. I’m Juan Xihuitl. If you have the will, I have the work."

He pauses for a second, almost waiting to see your reaction to him.

Digit's voice sounds unusually serious for her typical manner. It's only a few moments before she comes back over the comms:

"Okay, hear this: Girl named Samantha Carroll that matches that 'script disappeared in the '50s. People thinkin' she got grabbed up by some Corp suits. As weird as that is, the girl I'm hearin' about now looks to be a homeless, mid-20s female, sprung up in the CZ about a week ago."

There's a pause before Digit continues:

"Look, I'm reading all this drek about how she's seen walking around in scrubs and some Janus Industries street armor that doesn't fit her. She's in the Maker Collective, alright, but is this some kind of escaped test subject? I change my mind; I'm not alright going into this blind. If... if anything, we.. we should help her."

"R-right? I mean, that's.. what we need to do, right?"

Can't be a coincidence that we're getting paid to grab some data and then some other girl we're to find is wearing a jacket with the same logo. Two presumably unrelated jobs come up on the same night and have a connection like this?"

Digit sounds undeniably worried, more so than one might expect for the given situation. She's never good at hiding her emotions, and something is certainly troubling her.

Still on mute, Puck says

right. so are you voting we take both jobs and solve a mystery? Remember that dead 'runners can't spend nuyen

Feb 10, 2017 5:28 pm
Digit... you're letting emotions get in the way again... it's just biz. If we take a job and don't deliver it will tarnish our good name, nobody will hire runners whop have gone soft, and you'll starve to death. is that what you want?
Feb 10, 2017 5:41 pm
"I'm not saying we take the job and don't deliver. I'm saying thumbs down to the job in the first place. I'm.. I'm not helping with this Samantha one. I'm not. Let's just go get that dragon's paydata instead."

For those that have worked with her in the past, Digit, while typically not one to advocate killing others, has killed without complaint. In the past, she's been okay doing a lot of questionable jobs, to the point that this one probably shouldn't seem like as much of a big deal as she's making it out to be.

now, what about the dragon job? I still don't like having anything to do with a dragon, let alone the big L....
Feb 12, 2017 12:52 pm
Digit frowns at the elf, "I do trust you Puck, and I trust what you say to me. And you said, 'if we take a job and don't deliver it will tarnish our good name.' That says to me that if you take a job, I'm to expect you to deliver on it." She turns to look out the window, but continues talking, "If your plan all along was to fake out the Azzies and save this girl - should she need saving - then you could've said that to me instead of 'too bad; executive decision." Digit's tone is less angry and sounds more hurt than anything. "I'll tag along in any case, in case we do this paydata job, and to keep some wannabe from bricking your shit. If this girl is some escaped lab pet though, I'm not turning her over to the Azzies."
Feb 13, 2017 8:49 pm

You contact Simon Andrews letting him know you'll take the job, and make your way towards your next destination.

By now, you’re almost accustomed to driving in the wind and snow. At least it beats walking any distance in a Chicago winter.

As you approach 1501 North Greenview Avenue, you see a right-triangular brick building lined with boarded up windows. The building is dark. It looks like it might have been a school in a previous life, but now it bears the word JANUS in some techie-looking letters above the barricaded glass doors in front. At the southeast corner of the building, a lone door lies open, hanging precariously from one hinge and pinned open by a snowdrift.
Feb 14, 2017 8:41 pm

Feb 14, 2017 8:44 pm
Symbiote pulls up alongside Ghost."Let's me send out my drone first. There may be squatters here, judging by that open door. See if Puck wants to do that magic stuff." Symbiote jacks into his RCC and opens the van window allowing the drones to exit and quickly seals it back up.

You are easily able to circumvent what little security is left on the cameras. Most of the cameras are out of work and only showing static.

Moving through the various cameras you find one that shows the reception area. The light is off, and you can barely make out the details. A large desk which once had the Janus logo stands in the middle of the room. The front has now been filled with several layers of graffiti.

The other working camera you are able to access seems to be further inside. A wrecked office landscape long since abandoned can be seen. Desks, chairs and other furniture lays scattered about. As you are surveying the scene, a large dog like creature can suddenly be seen entering the view. It is pure white with sharp spines protruding along the length of its back. It’s teeth seems to be glowing.

As you float into the building you see the same scenes that you've already seen through the cameras. A mostly broken down and dilapidated office floor. When you round one corner you find yourself facing the dog-like creature. It looks up at you with a menacing growl. You can tell from it's aura that it is angry and hungry. You can also tell that it is dual natured. It lets out a menacing howl.

Outside, the rest can hear the howl loudly. Don't sound like any natural creature. Even out here it almost makes your bones shake.

Digit, unable to perceive the world around her, seems somewhat confused:

"I'm heading in using my doberman. Is anyone coming? This thing doesn't have hands you know." Symbiote moves the doberman cautiously into the lobby. Scanning and tracking for targets.

"I can. Or I can keep an eye on the cameras. Whichever is more useful!"
Feb 23, 2017 10:30 am
"Keep an eye on the cameras. Let us know what's coming." Ghost asks, as she pulls her coat tight and steps out of the van. She stalks over to the open door and peers in, waiting a moment for her eyes to adjust to the dimness.

Ghost says quietly, "Lab?" and points down the hallway.
Mar 9, 2017 1:54 pm
You make your way through the floor, making your way through the offices and laboratories. Most of the valuables are long gone or broken beyond repair. After a long search, you figure that whatever you are looking floor is on another floor. So the question is, up to the top floor or down to the basement?
Mar 9, 2017 2:04 pm
"Ok comedian, up or down. This floor is empty. Do you have any readings on this data node?

Digit comes back over the comms...

"Not to say it isn't worth checking out, but it seems like a bunch of broken garbage upstairs. Downstairs is... suspiciously quiet, though."
Mar 13, 2017 3:29 am
"Ah crap. I hate suspiciously quiet. Downstairs it is."
Mar 13, 2017 12:43 pm
With the elevators out of order, the only way seems to be through the stairs. And already here you get a bad feeling. On the top of the staircase you can see dried blood, hard to tell how long it has been here. From downstair you can see evidence of light, and hear the buzzing of what could be fans. Seems there's power down here.

As you enter deeper into the basement, you lose contact with Digit. Anyone with the appropriate knowledge recognize the signs of wireless inhibiting paint.

As you approach the largest room in the basement, you see a dead dwarf in a lab coat lying in the open doorway, his head cocked at a decidedly unpleasant angle. Two human corpses lie just inside the doorway, one wearing an armor jacket with the Janus Industries logo.

The rest of this room jumps right out of the sci-fi horror trids at you. Twelve cloning tanks line the room, eleven containing identical dark-haired human females, all in suspended animation. The twelfth tank is open and some of its fluids are spilled across the floor. As you tear your eyes from the tanks, they land at one of the tables, upon which lies a scalpel, an open medkit, a commlink, and a small medical implant device, all covered in dried blood. Something bad happened here.
Mar 13, 2017 11:33 pm

Mar 16, 2017 12:10 am

There are a few more rooms, but it's mostly utility & storage rooms. There are 3 other rooms, though nothing as scary as this room is in there. Seems they are set up to study genetic material as well as a cyberwear lab. You could probably scrounge up some old cyber there, not worth much these days, but every penny counts.

It's a mid class commlink and it takes Digit almost no time to hack it. The last thing done on the commlink was to use its camera function; there’s still a recording of the back of a young girl's neck (she matches the girls in the tanks) as she extracts something from the back of her neck. The next most recent action performed seems to be several attempts to detonate a cortex bomb. Finally, the commlink contains the dwarf’s access codes for the Janus node. The code will give you access, but he do not have admin access.

On the bodies you find that each of them has an Ares Predator V with two spare clips. Whatever happened, they did not have time to draw weapons.

Rolls

Mar 22, 2017 2:42 am
"One of these girls got out and dug... um, this, I think," Digit gestures to the implant device covered in blood, "Out of her neck. Used the 'link to get a good view of it." The gnome shudders as the realities of this place begin to sink in; she'd been a bit distracted before and hadn't noticed some of the grotesqueries. "Think I can get a bit more off of thiiss..." Digit begins to access the Janus node via her Deck.
Mar 23, 2017 10:47 pm
Connecting to the node you see a giant hamster cage, with person-sized tubes connecting pods. There are three such pods. Above you can see four floating globes, obviously IC. With the access codes they don't seem to find your presence of any interest.
Mar 24, 2017 3:27 pm
To start off, Digit will remain within legal use of her access codes, and attempt to open what data is immediately available to her.
Mar 27, 2017 6:03 pm
Pod 1 corresponds to the Janus business front end with public records access. A lot of information here, so you need to use a Matrix Search to find anything of value here.
Pod 2 corresponds to the physical security system.
Pod 3 contains information about the cloning program and Janus’ attempts to create a Matrix gestalt of the minds of the clones in the tanks.
Mar 28, 2017 8:55 am
"Okay."

Digit's computerized voice comes in over the comms with some measure of finality.

"So, here's what we've got: Going to run a search on their public records for anything of interest. While I'm doing that, I can probably hack into some of their security system here, if need be, when we want to do that. Maybe some video of the escape, I'm thinking. There's also some information here about what they were doing in this room and... how they were trying to... combine their minds? These clones here."

There's a bit of a pause before she comes back.

"Ideas? Or should I just do what I do."

While speaking, Digit's mind is simultaneously giving command prompts to her Agent program, letting it run in the background to perform her search for her.

"I'll see what I can find."

Digit focuses back on her targets, and approaches them, this time, with less-than-legal means. She will gather what she can from Pod 2 and 3 that she can, but will hack into whatever else might be out of her grasp in those pods.

She does this in a few steps; first she illegally acquires permissions, then she searches the files for data bombs, and then finally she cracks the files.
OOC:
Digit has been on Silent Running this whole time (hence the -2 penalty I've been taking), and she will continue to do so, to avoid IC. A/S/D/F = 3/6/5/5+1. Programs: Program Carrier (Sneak), Agent R4, Signal Scrub, Defuse.

When she performs the Matrix Searches, her programs will include Search instead of Defuse, but she'll switch back after.

Doing all of these rolls at once to save time. I'll roll them in the order Digit would perform them. Obviously if she found data bombs, she would attempt to defuse them before hacking into the files. In pod 3 she's trying to crack whatever evidence she can about what the Mr. J is looking for. In Pod 2 she's looking to crack into video surveillance files.

Hoping that I did this right!

You find no databombs and set to work cracking the second and third pod. You find security logs, and are able to access them. To your surprise, someone has already been here. Everything seems normal, then there's seems someone has scrubbed and erased the data because there is a two hour break until you see the same scene you've already accessed.

All it tells you is that whatever happened, it happened 8 days ago.

Digit comes back into meatspace with a short gasp. After a moment of rubbing her eyes, she explains, "There's nothing on the cam feeds. It's all been scrubbed. Someone knew what they were doing, too."
Apr 8, 2017 10:07 pm
Ghost says softly, "Can we go then? This place creeps me out."
Apr 8, 2017 10:24 pm
Digit nods her head, climbing up to her feet and brushing herself off. "Yeah, let's."
Apr 10, 2017 5:53 pm
Finishing up at the Janus Industries building, you make your way back up to ground level, and then to what will hopefully be your last stop of the night.

New snow seems to have stopped falling, and you’re pretty sure the roads haven’t gotten any more treacherous. Of course, the wind still blows the snow in ways that most other cities would call a blizzard.

The Maker Collective is not so much a mall as a small city in itself. It’s a network of strip malls and offce buildings connected in a few places by canvas tunnels, almost like a giant hamster cage. It’s one of the few places in Chicago where the AR spam is as thick as the snow cover. You hear the sounds of workshops and hardware manufacturing even through the howling wind, and the occasional gust of wind brings the scent of ozone mixed with petroleum.

With the size of this place, you may be looking at a lot of legwork
Apr 10, 2017 8:54 pm
OOC:
From my research earlier, do I know of any locations where the target had been seen?
Apr 12, 2017 7:24 pm
The most views has been near a place they call the drug refinery. One of the biggest workshops that specializes in the selling and manufacture of the harder substances.
Apr 13, 2017 1:17 am
"I've seen trid of her near a place where they make some hard chems. Do we want to go there first? Anyone know of a better place?"
Apr 18, 2017 9:30 am
Ghost shakes her head. "Let's go there."
Apr 18, 2017 5:31 pm
As you arrive at the drug refinery you see life signs for the first time since you entered this wasteland. And when it rains, it pours. You can guess there's at least a hundred people walking around, some selling, some buying. Some just finding a dry corner to use.

One dirty man smiles at you with a smile that's seen better days. What few teeth is left are brown and rotting. "Spare some nuyen for coffee," you think he says, the way he talks you can barely make it out.
Apr 18, 2017 9:28 pm
"Depends," Digit says, looking somewhat uncomfortable as she stares up at this man. "Where's somewhere we can go for some reliable information?"
Apr 19, 2017 6:09 pm
"Then you've come to the right place," he smiles wide again, revealing his gums. "They don't call me Honest Tyrell for nothin'"

Another voice breaks in before you have the chance to reply. "No one calls you that you old coot," the voice turns out to be a young woman in her late 20s. She has long hair in multiple hues of purple and pink that reaches her lower back, she's decked out in biker gear. "No get out of here."

As 'Honest Tyrell' walks off you can hear him mutter. "One person called me that once... what if it was in jest."

The woman walks up to you. "Hi. My name's Serenity. If it's information you need, I'm your gal." she reaches out her hand, looking to shake yours. "What are you looking for?"
Apr 20, 2017 3:49 am
Digit offers hers, shaking Serenity's hand enthusiastically, "Hi Serenity. My name is Mizi." Digit makes no effort to tell a convincing lie, figuring that it was common enough to use a fake name here.

"We're looking for a girl who is probably in a bit of trouble, and..." Digit stops, looking hesitant. She glances at Ghost, and then at the others, looking unsure of how much she should say.
Apr 21, 2017 9:21 am
Ghost finishes, "We want to make sure she's okay, and take her home safely if that's where she wants to go."
Apr 21, 2017 7:48 pm
Symbiote watches the exchange with a disinterested expression. "Serenity hop in and warm up a bit. " He pops open the door and gestures for her to get in his vehicle if she wants to."Let's finish this conversation out of the wind and snow."

Or if you know of a place that's out of the elements that you feel more comfortable in? none of us are fans of the chicago winters...
Apr 24, 2017 6:03 pm
"Well, we don't make the merchandise of questionable legality out in the elements," Serenity says with a smile. "There are more salesmen inside the building here. As well as several rooms doubling up as a flophouse."

Leading you inside she continues. "Just don't go armed to the teeth to the production hall. They're a bit trigger happy. Most of the guards are so hopped up on one thing or another that it's a wonder it hasn't come crashing down yet."

Inside you can see even more stalls in what was once a vestibule. Looks like this was a student living complex. To the side you can see two orks dressed in combat armor guarding a door. They are holding shotguns, watching the crowd closely. As you enter, one of them points you out to the other before talking into his commlink. Your presence has been noticed.

"So, do you have any information about this girl? Or will any young girl suffice. And don't worry. I don't care what you want with the girl, as long as I get my finders fee."
Apr 26, 2017 5:20 am

well, that settles it, then. Puck motions to have someone pay her

low on Nuyen, I'll pay you back she flashes to the team
May 9, 2017 7:04 pm
"Cool omae," Serenity says accepting the payment from one of you. "The girl you're wanting showed up about a week ago. Got her a job cooking up the sensual delights you can buy around here. Don't know where she's staying when not at work. Mr.
Morgan probably set her up at some flophouse."
May 9, 2017 9:54 pm
Ghost quietly passes the nuyen to their informant.
May 10, 2017 12:27 pm
Digit pauses, nearly passing Serenity her nuyen before Ghost beat her to the punch. She redirects her attention to Serenity and asks, "Where can we find him?"
May 10, 2017 6:12 pm
"Behind them guys," she says pointing at the well armed orcs standing watch. "As I said, not the brightest bunch. But they're trigger happy should anyone act out of turn. Mr. Morgan calls himself the 'shift leader'. But really, he runs all the shifts, and the rest of the place as well."
May 10, 2017 8:54 pm
"Well that's a load of drek. Now we are going to have to pay again to find her when we paid you to find her?" Symbiote paces around in frustration. " Never did well getting the run around. So can you takes us to her or not?" Symbiote looks pointedly at Serenity.
May 11, 2017 11:33 am
Digit lets out a relieved breath, glad that someone spoke up about it so that she wouldn't have to. Whether or not he notices it, she gives Halaron an appreciative glance.
May 12, 2017 4:06 pm
"I can ask around," Serenity says, and for the first time her perky demeanor seems to slip. "Give me an hour. Just sit back and relax. Enjoy the merchandise."
May 19, 2017 11:26 am
Digit does as suggested, letting out a long breath. She looks to the others and asks with an awkward tone, "So.. no one has gotten hurt, right? Night is going well, huh?"
May 19, 2017 9:49 pm
Ghost nods, never ceasing her surveillance of their surroundings.
May 20, 2017 11:11 am
Digit nods repeatedly, "CZ isn't too bad, really." She looks around at some of the others. It isn't difficult to tell that she is trying to poke and prod for conversation. "Do we still have some pizza in the van?"
May 21, 2017 7:10 pm
Time pass, and an hour passes as you finish the last remains of cold leftover pizza. Then another half an hour passes without Serenity returning. Just when you are about to give up, and look into another source of information she returns.

"So, the girl you lookin' for. I found her." she tells you. "She's working for Mr. Morgan as I told you, but between work he's set her up in a cheap apartment three buildings down." Possibly making you wonder what a cheap apartment is in the CZ, or whether there is any expansive apartments. "She shares an apartment with a few other workers. The old history building, 'class room' 313."
May 22, 2017 8:30 pm
"That's more like it. Finally some hard Intel. " Symbiote looks over at Digit. "So do you think you could get us some eyes on the target or should I send over my drone?"
May 23, 2017 12:42 pm
"Nice job," Digit whispers, nudging Halaron. As he addresses her, Digit mumbles, "Oh. Your drone might be more reliable. The connection here is trash. I can try anyway, if you want, but I should probably sit in the van in that case."
May 23, 2017 3:56 pm

You find layouts eventually. They show a entrance hall that divides the building in two, with lots of smaller classrooms and study rooms along the west side. Stairs can be accessed through the entrance hall as well as fire escapes on both ends. To the east it leads to a sizable library.
May 27, 2017 11:19 am
Digit groans after a time, rubbing at her eyes, "Building is split into two. Entryway connects them both. Classrooms and such on the west side, library on the east. There's fire escapes we can use to enter in, if we'd like, or there are stairs in the entrance."
May 28, 2017 2:31 am
" Hey thanks for the intel." Symbiote tosses a 50 cred chip to Serenity. " I vote for keeping a watch for the girl and talk to her. She might be more open that way than just walking up to her. Anyone else have any ideas?" Symbiote traded glances with the others.
May 28, 2017 12:32 pm
"I'm not saying I think it's a better idea, but for the sake of listing our options... I could send her a message? Maybe I could show her what we know. The video we saw. Tell her that we want to help, and we could meet somewhere she's comfortable with." Digit seems uncertain, but sensitive to their mark's predicament.
Jun 1, 2017 3:34 pm
Hmm... showing the video to her as part of our message may be traumatic. we can send her a message and offer an understanding ear or tell her that we want to help. that should lure her out. but instead of a message maybe we should talk to her real time. Digit, can you beam her an encrypted comm call?

wait, are we even sure she has a Comm after what happened? if not, then we'll have to do it the old fashioned way. I could have a spirit relay her a message...
Jun 2, 2017 11:51 am
Digit shrugs, "I don't know. Might've stole one. I'd have to search it up." She smiles, "Or, yeah. Spirit wuju works, too."
Jun 6, 2017 9:24 pm
"Do we have any reason to think she's dangerous? Why not just talk to her?"
Jun 7, 2017 11:14 am
"That would work, too." Digit concurs, her hands fidgeting a bit.
Jun 8, 2017 9:37 pm
"Want me to walk up to her apartment and ring the bell? We just need to chat with her. Puck why don't you and Digit go in and see if she's open to talking. You make your way over to the address you've been given. While the weather have calmed, you can still feel a biting chill in the air.

The trip don't take long on foot or car. You find the building easily. It may once have been an esteemed part of the university, now it is a shadow of it's former glory. Most of the windows have been broken, and a few have been boarded up to keep the elements out.

Inside the entrance hall you can see about a half a dozen junkies huddling over an old oil barrel that's being used as a source of heat. You can see flames and smoke rising from it.
Jun 11, 2017 10:01 am
Digit will continue through, averting her eyes from anyone that looks her way. She'll keep close to Puck during their walk up the stairs.

puck sticks a little close to Digit, feeling protective. Putting on an air of confidence that she doesn't feel, Puck, continues into the building
Jun 17, 2017 11:16 am
Ghost nods at the people around the fire, then takes up a position where she can see the stairs and the door.
Jun 17, 2017 4:05 pm
You arrive at the door you've been told, it is old an decrepit. Looks like a girl scout selling cookies could break it down by knocking too hard. Not that there's a lot of those around here. You can hear no sounds from within. If it hadn't been for the dirty floor that notes signs of movement earlier. You realize most people are either working the night shift, asleep or doped up at this time of night.
OOC:
You have spent a few hours driving around and fixing the signal boosters, making it around 1 o'clock at night.

Jun 22, 2017 5:36 pm
